My fellow anglers and friends, This month we celebrate our second (2nd) Anniversary. Wow! Two years just shot by and with the wink of an eye we will be walking into year three. I on behalf of my team at The Asian Angler magazine thank you for your support. With this issue we have decided to do some changes to a few sections. The Test Drive section will now show how we rate certain qualities of the products that we have tested. This will highlight better the strong points and not so strong points about these products. We have also decided to change the Content Page (your dashboard) to make navigating easier. A new section called New Launches has been added to our magazine starting with this issue. In the New Launches section we will highlight new products that have recently been launched or are on its way to being launched. While we may or may not have tested them the objective of this section is to let you know that such products are now made available. Vintage is another new section that we have added especially for fishing tackle connoisseurs. In Vintage we showcase collectible or vintage fishing tackle. In this issue showcase the ABU500 series Half Encapsulated or closed faced reel. Remember to check out the Funtertainment section too and relax with some fishing related music. Have you heard Mike Iaconelli sing? Well, here’s your chance. There are lots more in this issue. Thank you for your support and happy reading. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Penn Conflict The Bully Of The Sea
Penn has been a household name when
it comes to saltwater fishing. Ask any “old salt” about Penn reels and you’ll be on a ride through time how the power of Penn reels subdued giants out at sea. The tradition continues with the Penn Conflict.
Penn Conflict reels are no eye candy. They come in matte black full metal body, dark gun metal coloured handle with Round EVA knob, and gun metal coloured spool made light with holes the design of Penn’s logo. The Conflict looks mean and with that I mean properly mean. Have you watched the show Hitman? The Conflict would be the choice reel should the Agent 47 (Hitman) decide to do some fishing. 23
Tough Stuff
The Penn Conflict exudes power and toughness. Pick it up and you instantly feel the weight (not a light reel) and rigidity of the Conflict. It is feels exactly like the powerhouse it is meant to be. It comes with a thick fat shaft that supports its tough spool. The rotor and bailarm are also built rigid reducing flex to a minimal. The heavy-duty aluminium bail-arm wire is thick and rigid, a clear show of strength and power.
25
Techno Balance
ed-Rotor
When it comes to smoothness, the Penn Conflict may not be the smoothest reel in the market but for a reel made to handle monsters, its level of smoothness is really good. What I meant is that you will not be left with an empty feeling or a disconnected feel (such as in a vacuum) when you crank the reel. You do feel the gears with a light pressure yet it is still smooth and well balanced, a testament of the Techno Balanced-Rotor system.
27
t s e T Drag
The model that I have with me is the Conflict 6000 that claims a maximum drag of 25lb. Back at our lab we put it through the drag pressure test and we are a bit disappointed. Its Versa Drag did exceptionally well maxing out at 29lb with a very smooth drag. The disappointment is that for some reason Penn has capped the max drag to 29lb by not allowing one to continue locking the drag knob. The Conflict can certainly take more pressure. It is like some of the Japanese turbo charged cars that are capped to 180 kph. Still it passed the pressure test doing very well.
29
t s e T d l e i F
To test the Penn Conflict, we took it to the Exotic pond (commercial fishing pond) in Rawang (a town off Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia) and handed the Conflict out to anglers to test. Everyone said that the Conflict is overkill at this pond. It had lots of power of which most remained unused. We had to take the Conflict to a battleground worthy of its capabilities.
31
s l i a S e h T g n i n e l Chal
s
We waited a few months for the sailfish season to start and we headed to Rompin (a coastal town at the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular) to further our “test drive. This time the Conflict flaunts its capabilities subduing sailfish after sailfish for a total of four days fishing.
33
The Conflict has more than enough drag to tire the many sailfishes that took on the challenge. The drag is smooth throughout the fights (didn’t max out the drag). It has loads of cranking power retrieving line with a speedster tugging at the other end. Sailfish after sailfish the Conflict stood its ground asking, “Is that all you have?”
35
e r u t r o T e h T r Afte
All in all we tortured the Conflict on quite a few trips from commercial fishing ponds toying around with redtail Amazonian catfishes to Mekong catfishes, and a few trips out to sea battling diamond trevallies, cobias, and sailfishes. The Conflict remains unscathed. Yes, we knocked it here and there, dropped it a few times, and it still is in great condition.

Verdict The Penn Conflict is a tough and impressive powerhouse of a reel built to challenge brutes. It is certainly not the lightest, nor is it the best looking reel; but when it comes down to business, it does its job really well.

2 X kG What we have here is a brand with
great history making some of those unbreakable fibreglass rods and making the wives of anglers pretty unhappy for a few decades. Well, rods of such have since taken a backseat to modern rods that will not survive the washing machine torture or the oven over burn. It is nice to sometimes walk down memory lane and enjoy the benefits of fibreglass rods but we all know that modern rods came about for a few reasons. Some of these reasons include lightweight, sensitivity, and sexiness. Shakespeare has decided to bring the old world wonders of fibreglass and combine them with the modern sexiness of graphite. With that the Ugly Stik GX2 was born.
Fun Fact: Shakespeare started making fishing tackle since 1897 51
Mixture Of Two Worlds When I first picked up the Ugly Stik GS2 rod, it felt as if someone is messing with my senses. It feels heavy and it is tip heavy. It feels somewhat like a fibreglass rod but it has the looks of a modern day graphite rod because it is a graphite rod until you see the fibreglass tip. It is like getting into an old car fitted with a modern car’s body. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to test the rod but then I decided to give it a go.
53
Components And
Built Ugly Tech Blank The Ugly Stik GS2 comes with a blank called Ugly Tech of which is constructed using graphite and fibreglass. There are advantages and disadvantages to this blank construction as far as I am concerned. Advantages: Tough and will be able to take a beating. Good amounts of absorption at the tip of which is good if a fast running brute takes your bait. Highly sensitive tip of which is great for bottom fishing (not with live bait).
Disadvantages: It becomes tip heavy of which translates to the rod being weighty (comparing to modern rods).
55
Front view
Rear view
Ugly Tuff Guides
The guides on the Ugly Stik GS2 are one piece stainless steel guides. They too add weight to the blank bringing the weight forward towards the tip. They may be heavier but they are tough, will not burn a hole in one’s pockets, and can handle braided lines. Another good thing with not having inserts is that nothing will pop out under pressure.
57
Grips & Reel Seats
The Ugly Stik GS3 comes with EVA handles that don’t feel cheap and a graphite reel seat. They do add to the modern look of the rod especially with the holes at the reel seat exposing the blank of which it holds.
59
Field Testing We took the Ugly Stik GS3 to the Hulu Langat Fishing Pond to see if it were to be able to manage the brutes there. Even before we could setup our tackle our fishing guide shared his worry about using such a puny rod. “Well, if it breaks, it breaks, I told him.
61
Uneven Curve
It wasn’t long after we cast out this big ball of bait that a Mekong catfish (Plabuk) took our offering and kicked off a battle. With the brute running off the other way I forced the rod to flex and see how it curved. It has a pretty uneven curve being built with flexible fibreglass and the more rigid graphite; but it held on well. 63
Decent Backbone Power
Despite its flexible fibreglass tip the Ugly Stik GS3 does have decent amounts of backbone power that manages the fight pretty well. It managed to turn the fish a number of times and even stop its runs. I must admit that the fight is enjoyable thanks to its flexible and forgiving tip. 65
Features Ugly Stik®GX2™ rods feature Ugly Tech™ construction with a combination of Graphite and fiberglass to create a strong, yet sensitive rod with better balance for a lighter weight feel Ugly Tuff™ guides feature new one-piece stainless steel guides to eliminate insert pop outs and can be used with all types of line, including braid Ugly Stik® Clear Tip® design for extra strength and added sensitivity Durable and lightweight EVA grips Enhanced cosmetics for a more modern look
67
Verdict The Shakespeare Ugly Stik GS2 is a decent rod if you’re looking for a rod with a flexible tip, yet comes with a backbone that has good amounts of power, and you don’t mind the weight.

VFOX Yarika Squ
By Philemon Foo
uid Jigs When it comes to squid jigs we like those that are
well designed, with a nice mixture of colours, and even better if they come with natural looking eyes. We want them to swim in a certain way perhaps sexy enough to attract the attention of horny squid that have gathered to mate.
The VFOX Yarika Squid Jigs may not look like much. In fact it may not look at all attractive to us anglers. Well, they do not come in sexy prawn designs. No, they don’t look anything like fish either. Granted they look somewhat like squid; looking from a far, without glasses and being short sighted. Perhaps within the congregation of horny squids, the Yarika Squid Jig looks hot and “mate-able.”
71
These Squid Jigs Work I do not know what squids see or how they perceive squid jigs to be but they seem to have a liking for the plain looking Yarika Squid Jig. All we did was to tie a Yarika Squid Jig about 2 feet above the sinker and dropped them into the sea. They were a hit with the congregation of squids of which a few were kept for dinner.
73
Features
4 inch squid jig with Glow in Dark (luminous) body. 4 colour options
75
Verdict The VFOX Yarika Squid Jig may not look like much to us anglers but the squids of Kuala Rompin (coastal town on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular) seem to like them and like them a lot. So why deny them what they seek?

VFOX Kuroshio VD
The popularity of squid fishing or egging is on the rise and with that we see more and more squid jigs hitting the market. With this happening it makes sense that dedicated lure cases, bags, etc. make it to market too. With that in mind Brilliant Tackle brought in the VFOX Kuroshio VD-5084 Squid Jig Bag.
VFOX has been hard at work helping anglers look good, become better organized, with added protection to fishing tackle, plus some added convenience for some time now. The Kuroshio VD-5084 does that too. It looks sporty being dawned in carbon fibre designed skin with the added convenience of a front pocket , a plier holder,

clips to secure things like perhaps a scissors or a small flash light, and a meshed pocket. What’s more unique is that it comes with a rubber piece with holes to hold your squid jig temporarily while you need both hands for other things.
81
Squid Jig
Management The Kuroshio VD-5084 comes with 30 individual slots, each slot stores one jig securely. The slots are made of hard plastic and that allows the jigs to sit in them without their sharp spikes penetrating the hard plastic material. This is great as the jigs are separated from each other thus jigs scratching and damaging each other becomes nonexistent.
83
Safer For Anglers Although getting poked by the spikes of squid jigs do not happen often, it does happen especially when you have a whole bunch of them sitting unorganized in a tackle box. With the Kuroshio VD5084, the jigs a stored with their spikes sitting safe at the bottom of the slot thus adds to safety. .
85
Bag And Pouch Another nice touch is that the Kuroshio VD-5084 can be slung on like a bag or worn like a pouch whichever way one likes. It comes with a permanent nylon strap and a shoulder pad to add some comfort, and an additional strap should to be secured around one’s waist.
Squid Jig Both main compartment of the bag opens up into something like that of a tray table making it easier to work on lures. It doesn’t open flat out but at an angle of which is well thought of. This ensures that other lures do not slide and fall off the bag.
87
Need Space? Should one need more space the hard plastic compartments can be removed freeing up lots of room to put things like tackle boxes, additional lines, etc. Doing so is easy. All one has to do is to remove the hard plastic sheets from the inserts or sleeves and more space.
To Conclude... The VFOX Kuroshio VD-5084 Squid Jig Bag is a well thought off squid jig as well as fishing lure management bag. It looks good (to me at least) and it comes with lots of niceties that adds value to the bag.

Ofmer Lil Micky Lur
By The Philemon Asian Foo Angler
res
The Ofmer Lil Micky lures are some of the cutest lures I’ve seen. They look like little cute toy mice in various colours. These lures are floating lures designed to catch snakeheads such as the haruans (brown snakehead) and tomans (giant snakehead).
91
The Lil Micky lures have hooks placed at the back of its body with their points sitting atop the back of the lure. This reduces snagging on lily pads and vegetations that sit beneath the water surface. Beneath the lure is a little spinner to attract the attention of nearby predators.
93
Made of rubber, the Lil Micky lures compresses when a predator hits thus allowing the hook to penetrate the predator’s jaw area allowing for a good hook-up.

Fishing During The Summer Tr
By Jon B. Jon is an avid angler currently bsaed in Ohio, USA
ransition Into Fall The summer transition into fall can
be a strange and confusing time period for many bass anglers. The fall/summer transition is the breaking point between deciding what fishing approach to take. Does the angler choose to target bass using traditional warm water methods or do they begin tossing cold water baits? The majority of most bass anglers will chose to overlook the seasonal transition and standby until the water drops to a stable consistent temperature. Unfortunately the anglers that hold back are missing out on the perfect opportunity to squeeze in a few nice bass before the thick layer of warm clothes stays on permanently. Though the fluctuation in the weather and fishing pattern may pose a rightful challenge, the transitional period is still an exciting and often times rewarding event that bass anglers shouldn’t pass up. 115
The summer transition marks the point when cool air begins to mix in with the warm summer humidity. When two opposites mix together high winds tend to generate which in return churns the lake bottom and water temperature. Luckily small insects and zooplankton are easily influenced by wind current thus provoking baitfish that feed on zooplankton to follow nearby. Tiny fish such as shad and juvenile bluegill will congregate in large schools to track and feed on windblown phytoplankton and zooplankton. Heavy winds will be your guiding light while on the water, pointing out where the baitfish might be located and where to possibly find feeding bass.
117
While following the wind pattern keep your eye peeled for heavy brush or dynamic lay-downs on wind blown shorelines. Baitfish tend to congregate in these areas creating an accessible feeding spot for largemouth. More often then not baitfish will be on the backside of brush which can call for some tricky fishing methods. When approaching a large lay-down position yourself so you are able to cast and pitch every corner and branch of a fallen tree. Inexperienced anglers tend to only fish the edges of a sunken trees in fear that they will get hung up (snagged) or lose a fish in the entanglement of brush. When the summer/fall transition begins larger fish will often stage up close to a lay-down especially in stained water. These larger bass can be too lazy or just plainly not in the mood to venture out past a lay-down to feed; making it even more critical to place your lure in the thick stuff.
119
Fortunately there are ways to tackle this issue and rip some of those finicky fish up and out of the cover. The lure of choice for fishing heavy brush is a 1/4oz to 3/8oz grass or pitching jig. The conventional method of flipping brush usually calls for a heavy jig but unfortunately heavy jigs fall to the bottom at a fast rate making it difficult for idle bass to target the lure. A lighter jig will enable the angler to keep their lure in the strike zone for a longer period of time. The strike zone for a bass is usually right in front of their face where they can easily inhale a lure.
121
When working your jig in around every pocket of a lay-down be prepared to miss a few. Getting larger fish out of heavy cover can be difficult that is why it is important to have the appropriate equipment. Casting outfits are most suitable for the job; a medium heavy action rod ranging anywhere from 7’ 3” to 7’ 5” is perfect paired with a high gear ratio casting real spooled with 17lb fluorocarbon or heavy braid depending on how thick the cover is. Leave no area of a lay-down untouched, fish every nook and cranny until you are confident you have covered it all. Do not be afraid to cast in seemingly risky areas; losing a lure or two is common and it is a part of the process of targeting hard to reach bass.
123
As this summer winds down and the mornings at the boat ramp begin to feel a little cooler remember these simply and affective transitional techniques in order overcome those difficult fishing days. Don’t let a risky pitch in tight cover be the only thing that stands in your way between you and that trophy largemouth

Knowledge Wise
Understanding Fishing Rods Part
By Philemon Foo
t 17: Spiral Wrapped Rods In this article let’s go into some-
thing out of the ordinary. Let us look at something that has baffled some people, got some groups into heated debates, got some people confused, and some love them. Let us take a look at spiral wrapped rods where guides do not follow conventional placement thus requires some unconventional thinking.
What Is It? Spiral wrapped rods are conventional and / or baitcasting type rods with its guides placed somewhat like a spiral staircase towards a 180 degree angle. With the reel sitting above the rod (rod placed horizontal), the line is led towards the bottom via spirally affixed guides. 127
Not A New Thing Spiral wrap rods (also known as acid wrapped, Robert’s wrapped) have been around for many years. However they have not gone mainstream as they look rather odd and the market acceptance isn’t large enough for tackle brands to start developing them.
Why Go Spiral? There are a number of benefits that comes with the spiral wrapped rods with the main disadvantage being the way it looks as it looks like a rod with its guides placed wrongly or out of alignment. Other than that there are no major disadvantages to it.
129
Reduced Stress On Blank The rod blank of a casting or conventional rod goes through a lot of stress, twisting from left to right depending on where the brute of a fish runs. This is because its guides are placed on top of the blank while the fish is pulling hard at the bottom. Rod guides will start twisting the blank towards the bottom.
Spinning rods do not have this issue as the rod guides affixed to them are already facing downwards. With spiral guides, the guides spiral downwards towards the bottom and thus the stress (twist) on the rod blank is reduced tremendously unless you’re battling a huge flying fish that takes towards the clouds in a realm of fantasy fishing.
131
Lighter Weight And Added Stiffness There are generally more guides on a casting rod as compared to spinning rods of the same action and power. The reason is to reduce line and blank contact. With spiral wrapped rods, the line does not touch the blank just like in a spinning rod thus the need for lesser guide.
With lesser guides, the weight of the rod is reduced and stiffness goes up a little. More guides add weight to the front of the rod (placed horizontal) and lesser weight up front means that weight is transferred backwards.
Smaller Guides Here is a piece of good news for those who prefer smaller guides. With normal casting rods using semi micro to micro guides, lines will almost always touch the rod blank when the rod flexes. With spiral wrapped rods this issue is eliminated unless the rod bends all the way to the fore grip of the rod. Smaller guides also mean reduced weight. 133
Less Pressure On Hands With this I mean less pressure on the grip of the reel. With normal baitcasting rods as well as conventional rods, more pressure or strength is applied by the angler when he or she holds the rod and reel during the battle with a fish. This is to counter rod blank twist.
To understand this, imagine holding a stick at one end while a friend holds the same stick at the other. He then pulls the stick downwards while twisting the stick to the left. You will have to counter his actions by lifting upwards while twisting to the right. This is how a normal casting rod acts. But if all he does is to pull downwards, your focus is to pull upwards without needing to twist. That’s how a spiral wrapped rod works. The force is mainly downwards.
135
Casting Ability I cannot confirm if there is a difference when it comes to casting. I’ve tested two rods that are the same model with one rebuilt into a spiral wrapped rod. Being tested on the same line, reel, and casting plug, the difference in casting distance seems somewhat negligible with the spiral wrapped rod giving a slightly further distance.
137
To Spiral Or Not To Spiral? To go spiral or not, that is up to you. Personally, I like the added advantages of spiral wrapped rods and they do give better performance and manageability especially during the fight with a brute. Well, if you’ve got an old casting rod sitting around gaining no more mileage, why not spruce things up by turning it into a spiral wrapped rod and giving it a go...

Vintage
By Philemon Foo
Fishing has a long history and as time stops for no man, it is nice to go back in time and look at the wonderful pieces that contributed to what we have today. Unfortunately no one has invented the time machine but we can still enjoy pieces of history with vintage or collection pieces that adorn the shelves of angling connoisseurs.
143
Abu 500 Half Encapsulated Reel Series Brand: ABU Origin: Sweden Years: 1961 - 1981 Type: Spinning (half encapsulated) Legend: Match Fishing Favourite / game changing technology
Back in the early 1960s (1961) ABU created the ABU500 half encapsulated reel series (closed faced) that are problem free during a time when anglers fumbled with a few things from lines to bail-arms for example. Although in Sweden it was used to battle pikes, the ABU 500 series has been winning match fishing competitions in.
145
Game Changer
Back in the early 1960s (1961) ABU created the ABU500 half encapsulated reel series (closed faced) that are problem free during a time when anglers fumbled with a few things from lines to bail-arms for example. Although in Sweden it was used to battle pikes, the ABU 500 series has been winning match fishing competitions in.
147
Fast And Winning The need for speed is nothing new. Back then the faster you get your bait in the water the higher your chances of catching a fish and winning a match. Spinning reels with bail-arms were the norm until the ABU 500 series reels left them in the mist with the instant push button line release and pickup system. The ABU 506 was the match angler’s favourite amongst the ABU 500 series.
149
Built Tough The ABU 500 half encapsulated reel series came with tough full metal bodies. They may weigh more than some of today’s reels but these reels are built to very high quality standards and they can take quite a beating. The metal includes buttons, spool cover, handle bar, etc. The only plastic perhaps would be the handle knob of which is quality plastic.
151
Incredible Smoothness I have in my hands a reel that is many years older than I, yet it is smoother than a lot of the modern reels found today. The smoothness and balance of this reel is really amazing. This speaks volumes of how reels used to be built.
153
To Conclude The legendary Abu 500 half encapsulated reel series is a lovely piece of history with strong winning DNA in the Match Fishing World Championships, and is superbly engineered with the kind of quality that surpasses that of many of today’s reels. Anglers’ Paradise
Hulu Langat Fishing Resort –
It has been a few months since my last
visit to the Hulu Langat Fishing Resort in Hulu Langat (a town off Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia). Being tasked with the duty of planning a fishing day out for some physically challenged friends I decided to pay a visit to the Hulu Langat Fishing Resort together with my business partner and some fishing tackle that needed testing.

– Revisited
157
The Restaurant The day was so hot I could feel the sun’s heat searing my skin the moment I got out of my car. We took refuge from the sun at the restaurant while we waited for Chan, the owner of the place. Thank God for air-conditioning. The last time I was here, the restaurant was still under renovation. Anyway, I ordered the Mongolian chicken chop because I have not had one before, and a cup of ice tea.
159
The restaurant is a proper restaurant that serves local and western dishes. Prices are average but not expensive. The Mongolian chicken chop I ordered is really good; juicy chicken without bones with some salad and mashed potatoes on the side, and a bowl of “Mongolian styled sauce as a dip. My business partner gave the thumbs up too for his order of fried rice.
*Food can be ordered from wherever one is fishing and they do deliver of which is great.
161
Fishing Areas After having a chat with Chan, we headed to the registration office to pay for our fishing and the necessary rigs and bait. The fishing areas have also been done up. The common area (long jetty) has tables and chairs where one can sit relax, tie rigs, have meals, etc. under the comfort of ceiling fans.
163
The huts (platforms) look nice too being adorned with lights, a life buoy, a place to sit, a tap to wash up, and posters by Penn. They look like a professional angler’s hangout. Anyway, we chose to fish at the common area (long jetty) as there was only one other group of anglers and we decided against walking to the huts as the sky took a turn with signs of a major storm brewing.
165
Lots Of Activities The fishes were in a playful mood surfacing all over the area from the middle of the pond towards the hut (platforms) during our first hour. I cast out a big ball of dough, placed the rod on the floor, secured the fishing line to a bottle, and waited for the bottle to fall (Bungsamran style fishing). It was both frustrating and exciting. The line kept moving in and out, a sign of smaller fishes licking on the bait but just not taking it.
167
About 15 minutes into our fishing the bottle dropped and it was time to torture our test subject. My business partner took out his phone and started filming while our fishing guide grabbed a nearby net and waited for me to bring the fish in. Shortly, a Mekong catfish was landed, photographed, and released.
169
Bait Thieves Caught Watching the line move in and out over and over again can drive one mental. At one point I was talking to the bottle, “fall, fall, fall. Guess what? I swear I felt like Magneto (in X-Men) when the bottle tilted, yet did not fall. I looked at it with a harder stare and plop it hit the floor. I picked up the rod and reeled in a tilapia. This happened twice that day.
*Needless to say, I do not have such powers and it was all a coincidence. So, no need to pick me up for experimentations.
171
Lots Of Activities About two hours into our fishing, the term “raining cats and dogs seemed modest to the storm that hit us. Things went quiet after landing another two more Mekong catfishes. This was probably due to the massive heavy rain. Well, at least we were dry although it got quite cold.
Fishing resumed after the rain stopped at night but action has slowed probably due to the change in water temperature as suggested by our guide. We landed three more Mekong catfishes and decided to call it a day.
173
Fishing Tips If you are fishing from the long jetty and there are few anglers fishing on the said day, cast your bait as far as you can towards the huts (platforms) if no anglers are fishing there. About 80% of the distance between the jetty and the platforms is good. The fishes tend to be more active with more people fishing. Perhaps the dropping of baits into the water gets them excited. Don’t be stingy with bait. When the action slows try ground baiting with balls of dough bait. Make sure to get the “plomp” sound. Bring along lower poundage / smaller diameter leaders just in case the fishes are a bit finicky on the day and are not in a mood to eat.
175
Conclusion This is the cleanest pond I’ve fished in in Malaysia and one with the best service so far. Price wise, I say that it is reasonable especially with the cleanliness, conveniences, and service offered. The Hulu Langat Fishing Resort is like the 5 star hotel of fishing ponds.

Junior Anglers
Get Your Kids Fish An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc. There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life. With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a section of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

Soft Plastic Adventur
By Amirul Irfan
res Part 2
This is a follow up to my last article, ’Soft
Plastic Adventures’. After receiving some great soft plastics and other baits from Pure Fishing Malaysia I just had to try them out. I decided to fish a pond near home with one goal in mind, to catch my first Peacock Bass. The water was cold due to heavy rains the day before and the fish were inactive.
189
The Berkley Gulp! Inch Hawg produced this little peacock bass. It’s tiny, but it gave a good fight on 4lb tackle. I fished it off the bottom of the pond with a few twitches to imitate shrimps, the main source of food for the peacock bass here.
191
A week later I fished a pond just a stone’s throw away from home. I rigged the Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw on a 4/O EWG Hook and fished it in some heavy weeds. After 5 hits, I finally had a solid hook up and landed this Striped Snakehead.
193
Released back to where it came from after some pictures.Despite the water being cold and murky, the Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw still produced a decent fish.
195
After releasing this Striped Snakehead I was glad to meet two junior anglers, who were inquisitive and interested in soft plastics. We had a good chat and we are planning to fish together in the future. They were kind enough to share a spot for top water sebarau fishing, but I don’t know when I will have the chance to fish the spot.
197
Here’s the Berkley Powerbait Double Hawg rigged on an Owner 2/O Ultra head. This Striped Snakehead was guarding its fries and hit the soft plastic multiple times before getting hooked right in front of me. Released it and I saw it again the next morning, guarding its fries near the patch of hydrilla where I hooked it.
199
After releasing the striped snakehead I caught earlier, I hooked this one. It came shooting out of hydrilla many times and gulped the soft plastic without getting hooked. After a few tries I finally hooked it. The Berkley Powerbait Double Hawg has an enticing swimming action in the water, and it looks like a frog.
201
In the past few weeks I’ve hooked countless striped snakeheads along with my younger brother. I will continue to fish for them and you can check out videos of my adventures at http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSnakeheadAngler Thanks for reading!

Exciting Times Ahead For Coar
As soon as the feeder hits the bottom and the line was tightened, the tip
immediately swung around. The line was gently reeled in and a small, but very significant lampam was in the net. It was the same case for the next few casts, revealing how effective this kind of fishing could prove to be.

rse Fishing in Malaysia The Coarse Fishing Sport Club organized a closed coarse fishing demonstration and briefing recently at Taman Rekreasi Wetland in Putrajaya (administrative capital of Malaysia, 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur city centre) for the media, Tourism Malaysia, and Kementerian Belia & Sukan (Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia).
The usual coarse fishing gang was there to give our support and Steve Lockett, who is currently in Malaysia to hold some coarse fishing clinics and assist the Club, was present to demonstrate some feeder and waggler fishing. Coarse Fishing Sport Club (CFSC) is registered with Suruhanjaya Sukan Malaysia (Malaysian Sports Commission), Kementerian Belia dan Sukan, thanks to the tireless efforts of my mate and the current CFSC Secretary, Nafeez. CFSC will also represent Malaysia as a full member to The International Angling Confederation (CIPS) in its freshwater discipline called The International Federation of Sport Fishing in Freshwater (FIPSed).
207
One of the main objectives of CFSC is to prepare a full Malaysian team to take part in the World Angling Championships organized by FIPSed which are held every year, so far held only in Europe. There are plans for Malaysia to host this prestigious event in the future but for now the main aim is to set up a team. CFSC has started to organize monthly matches for anglers to take part in. It’s a programme for anglers to learn and experience more about coarse and match fishing, as well as an avenue to spot potential talented anglers who can represent the nation.
This day at Putrajaya Wetland was to brief the government agencies on how the Club and activities would be run, including the goals for international participation. The short but very informative session was well received by Tourism Malaysia and Kementerian officers, even though this fishing style and format is very new to them. Steve made a few casts with the feeder and wagglers rod and talked a bit on how the fishing was done and how effective this style could be with a few quick lampams almost every cast.
209
The officers were very impressed with the demonstration, so much so that they are keen on the idea of sending a full Malaysian team to the World Feeder Championships in Serbia in 2016. Exciting times ahead!
Do keep up with the latest info on Coarse Fishing Malaysia FB page and come join our clinics and matches!
