POPULAR MUSIC JAZZ FUNK FUSION pioneers The Headhunters return to Aspen this weekend for a two-night, four-run show at the JAS Café. The immortal, influential band behind hits like “Chameleon” and “God Made Me Funky” broke out in the early 1970s, and their tracks have become some of the most sampled in the hip-hop era. They will be performing their iconic tracks alongside new material. Their last album, 2011’s “Platinum,” included the cut “D-Funk” with guests Snoop Dogg, George Clinton and Killah Priest. The Headhunters also put on one of the more legendary live performances in modern Aspen, when they reunited with pianist Herbie Hancock here in 1997 for Jazz Aspen’s June Festival. Beforehand, the band spent several days rehearsing in the ballroom at the Silvertree Hotel. They return, sans Hancock, for what promises to be a highlight of the resort’s winter concert season. “It’s going to be a smoking show,” said Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Jim Horowitz. “It’s jazz and it’s funk and it’s rock, and they pioneered that sound.” The band will play Thursday, Feb. 12 and Friday Feb. 13 at 7 and 9:15 p.m. at the JAS Café in the Little Nell. Tickets are $45 and on sale at www. jazzaspensnowmass.org.

The Headhunters will perform four shows at the JAS Café on Thursday, Feb. 12 and Friday, Feb. 13.

POPULAR MUSIC THE ASPEN ART MUSEUM’S outdoor commons will host its second exhibition, with British artists Alice Channer’s site-specific “R o c k f a l l” stretching around the museum’s exterior. The piece, to be officially unveiled Feb. 12, is billed as a horizontal rockslide made with industrial materials to mimic and contrast natural slides in our mountains. Also opening this week is an exhibition by Italian multimedia artist Roberto Cuoghi. The museum hosts a dual opening reception Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. Both Channer’s and Cuoghi’s exhibitions will be on display through May.

COLORADO FAVORITE SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9 is coming to Belly Up for a three-night stand over President’s Day weekend. Fitting their acclaimed, high-tech light show in Belly Up should be an interested sight. The Belly Up shows are Friday, Feb. 13 through Sunday, Feb. 15. Saturday night’s show is already sold out. Headlines tell the tale, but offer no solution SUNDAY’S NEW YORK TIMES (Feb. 8, 2015) came out with a front page that illustrates the debate over the U.S. “wealth gap,” or the implications represented by that debate, a situation that according to one of the stories has angered some 67 percent of the citizenry in the richest nation on Earth. In one story, specifically, the reporter took aim at Hillary Clinton’s position on the subject, and proclaimed that she is building a campaign platform around the idea that in the U.S., anyone who works hard and follows the rules should be able to do well. Naturally, Clinton is caught in a “quandary,” as the headline put it, over how to promote this idea while at the same time not alienating her wealthy patrons or admitting that she, herself, is part of the problem. The reporter recalled that Clinton has come under fire for her private speaking engagements, many of them delivered to gatherings of the self-same class of wealthy power brokers of one sort or another, and many of them earning her $200,000 or more per speaking date. The story only hinted at a subtext highlighting Clinton’s status as a very wealthy woman herself, a status she shares with the current president, Barack Obama. This disparity — between calling for a solution to the wealth gap while being a beneficiary of that same gap — leads to questions about what that kind of status might mean to an increasingly impoverished electorate that is forced to choose between wealthy candidates in election after election. The voters must make these choices while being browbeaten into submission by misleading advertising salvos funded by those wealthy patrons of the political class, which brings up images of a monied snake eating its own tail. In a seeming nod to the difficulty faced by Clinton and other politicians, the lead of the story refers to them seeking ways “to address the anger about income inequality without overly vilifying the wealthy.” The companion story on the front page of the Times, I should point out, was not thematically in rhythm with the story mentioned above, but gets at the same issues tangentially. It was about the unsurprising trend of shady “shell companies” buying up blocks of hyperexpensive real estate in New York in the form of high-priced condo projects that only the very rich can buy into. The article picked out a few such purchases — a condo bought for $15.65 million by some secretive company linked

to a former Russian senator and banker suspected of links to organized crime, a condo down the hall going for $21 million to a Greek businessman with similar corruption problems, and a trio of condos sold to a Chinese magnate found guilty of building housing for New Jersey workers that turned out to be marred by “hazardous, unsanitary conditions” — to make its point. The message behind the headline was that the U.S., and New York in particular, has become a haven for foreigners interested in hiding wealth accumulated through nefarious business dealings, as well as for the native-born wealthy who may or may not be guilty of similar dealings in their shady past but who have an equal interest in hiding just how wealthy they are. And so we are once again confronted with the inherent hypocrisy and inequality of the U.S. economic system. We claim to live in a fabled land of opportunity, and have a rising number of billionaires looking for ways to hide their money as proof of that opportunity. But at the same time that the ranks of millionaires and billionaires continue to grow, the middle class shrinks and the lower class expands, with all the problems such disparity entails. The plain fact is that anyone can get rich in this country if they are willing to park their morality at the curb and dive into the seedy, seamy swamp of highdollar shenanigans. But if all you want is to do a job and do it well, live a life that is not tinged by poverty and want and maybe raise a family of children with the same chances, you’re too often out of luck in today’s America. Because the deck is stacked in favor of the hustlers, speculators and robber barons and against those who either don’t want or can’t find a way to be part of that hustling class. And electing politicians culled from the hustling class clearly is not going to do much to fix things. I believe the very existence of the hustling class has spawned a perpetualmotion machine at the top of our economic heap, the main goal of which is to maintain the status quo at all costs, regardless of any negative effects on our national economic and political health. And as long as the wealthy and their lawyers are writing the rules that govern all of us, this will not change no matter who claims to be looking for a solution to this problem.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Gen. James Weaver was the first presidential candidate to campaign in Aspen.

FIRST PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO CAMPAIGN IN ASPEN Presumed 2016 presidential candidates have visited Aspen to

garner financial support for their campaigns. However, they have not yet made public appearances to ask for the votes of Aspen residents. The first presidential candidate to visit Aspen was James Weaver, who came to seek votes.

The election of 1892 featured a rematch. The Democratic challenger, Grover Cleveland, had been elected president in 1884. Despite winning the popular vote in 1888, he lost that election to Republican Benjamin Harrison. A movement against the mainstream parties complicated matters. Reformers and those who protested the gold standard gained popularity. In addition a merger of southern farmers with western miners into the People’s Party, commonly called Populists, shook up the 1892 election. To top things off, the standard bearer of the People’s Party, James Weaver, traveled the country to campaign, a tactic neither of the major party candidates had undertaken. Weaver, known to his allies as General, his rank from the Civil War, brought to the People’s Party a long and interesting political career. He parted with Republicans over that party’s intransigence over the gold standard, and joined the Greenback Party. Along with 17 others of the new party, Weaver was elected to Congress in 1878, just before Aspen was founded. In 1880 he was that party’s candidate for president, but he won no electoral votes and lost his house seat. He won

10

the seat back for two more terms, starting in 1884, by advocating the direct election of senators, prohibition causes, and the monetizing of silver. Aspen became the center of People’s

John Bell of Montrose. Weaver came to Aspen in July 1892. From the Rio Grande depot to the Jerome, supporters lined Mill Street and cheered for the guests. Weaver

WEAVER CAME TO ASPEN IN JULY 1892. HE SPOKE ABOUT WHAT ASPEN WANTED TO HEAR, SILVER. “YOU ARE SELLING SILVER FOR ABOUT THE SAME AS IT COSTS YOU TO PROVIDE IT,” HE SAID. “SILVER CUTS THE WAGES OF ALL EMPLOYED, IT CLOSES MANY MINES. WHY? DOESN’T THE WORLD WANT SILVER? RAGGED PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING FOR IT. GOD PUT IT IN YOUR MOUNTAINS, AND AT THE RIGHT TIME ALLOWED YOU TO DISCOVER IT.” Party activity in Colorado. Local leaders were key members of the Silver League and pushed for free coinage of silver. Local Davis Waite — a silver advocate and voice for political reform and other populist issues — dominated the formation of the party in the state. In 1892 Waite ran for governor and won. Aspen Times owner and editor B. Clark Wheeler nearly won the congressional party nomination. But after four deadlocked ballots, he yielded to

Febr u ar y 1 2 - Febr u ar y 18, 20 15

addressed a large crowd at an outdoor venue near the Central School. Clouds covered the valley and a rush of strong winds almost drowned out the speakers, yet the audience remained. Weaver spoke about what Aspen wanted to hear: silver. “You are selling silver for about the same as it costs you to provide it,” he said. “Silver cuts the wages of all employed, it closes many mines. Why? Doesn’t the world want silver? Ragged

people are suffering for it. God put it in your mountains, and at the right time allowed you to discover it.” Mary Elizabeth Lease, a Suffragette leader and Kansas Populist, spoke after Weaver. Her fervent words reinforced populist ire toward Wall Street Republicans, but she had to stop when the wind became too strong. Lease and Waite each spoke again indoors, in the evening, and Lease received the most applause. Weaver and other People’s Party candidates, including Waite as governor, swept the election in Colorado. Cleveland’s name did not appear on the ballot because Colorado Democrats had chosen Weaver electors instead of those for Cleveland. Weaver beat Harrison nearly seven to one in Aspen. Some had hoped the three-way presidential race would be close enough to force the House of Representatives to settle the vote, but Cleveland won by a large majority. Nonetheless, Weaver fared better than most third-party candidates. He won 10 percent of the national vote, and in the west he won Colorado, Idaho and Kansas. Weaver remained popular among Aspen’s residents. However Cleveland, who led efforts that repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893, became Aspen’s most hated president.

Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@comcast.net.

“FIRST OWL CREEK CHASE draws dozens of local x-c skiers” recounted the Aspen Times on Jan. 24, 1985. “Despite the fact that it was held on a working day, the first Owl Creek Chase last Thursday drew more than 60 competitors on skinny skis. Prizes were donated by the Aspen Skiing Company, local masseurs Joseph Meyer and Stephen Shearer, and by Fischer and Swix. Sponsors of the race were the Ute Mountaineer and the Aspen/ Snowmass Nordic council.” Fastest time for men of 34:06:2 earned by Bjorn Sateroy and for women a tie between Jill Anderson and Patty Doyle with a time of 41:28. GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

GET SMART: 6 CASES FOR THE IPHONE 6

SMARTPHONES ARE A TOOL for the outdoors as well as everyday life. Over the past two months, I put a handful of cases to the test with my iPhone 6, on hikes, while biking, running and for workaday use. Here’s a wrap-up of six cases that stood out.

(by far) in this review. It offers protection with its metal frame, though the phone face is exposed and there are no dampening bumpers. Not waterresistant, very expensive, but by far the prettiest case here. $212, www.exovault.com

WATERPROOF:

BUILT-IN BATTERY:

Like a little suit of armor, the Catalyst Waterproof case attaches tightly and seals a phone into an airtight space. The company calls it “the most protective case in the world,” which may be an exaggeration but also is qualified with a waterproof (to 16 feet under) and drop-proof (up to 6 feet) design. This durability comes from a polycarbonate case with rubber bumpers, silicone seals and watertight acoustic membranes for clear audio. I didn’t go swimming with the Catalyst, but after two weeks of hard use outdoors, including in precipitation, the case earned my trust. Caveats: Touchscreen sensitivity is compromised slightly through the clear window, and the case requires an adapter for some headphone jacks. $69.99, www.catalystlifestyle.com

A slim lithium battery embedded in the Otterbox Resurgence case offers a free recharge in the wilds. When your phone goes dead, simply press a button on the case and you get a power-up. (I was able to use my phone for two days straight without an external power supply.) The case is made with a fiberglassfilled polycarbonate shell and foam inside, making it resistant to bumps and small drops. No covering on the glass touchscreen, however, and not waterproof. $99.95, www.otterbox.com

HANDMADE: A few things separate this case, including its wooden face, intricate metal hinges, magnets to hold it closed and a finish that looks more artisanal than mechanized. Made by hand in Brooklyn, N.Y., the EXO23 Black Aluminum case is the most beautiful

12

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

HOLSTER: It clicks into a holster that can be worn on a belt. A “kickstand” on the back props the case up so you can set your phone like a mini movie screen for YouTube videos. But phone protection is the bigger calling card on the Pelican ProGear Voyager, which includes thin layers of polycarbonate and rubber in its small frame. Unique to this model is a clear screen cover that protects from scratches. Finally, Pelican offers a lifetime guarantee, noting if a customer breaks the case, “we replace it.” $60, www.pelican.com

Febr u ar y 1 2 - Febr u ar y 18, 20 15

TETHERED: A tiny bungee cord connects to this case, which can then be attached to a zipper pull, belt loop or other tie point. With the Highline case from Kenu you get a phone that’s tethered and not droppable — though the polycarbonate case doesn’t cover the screen, so if it swings and hits something you could be trouble. The leash, which is made of braided Kevlar, uses a port on the bottom of the iPhone and a notch in the case to attach. I like the minimal look and the simple design to keep my phone close on a chairlift, boat or any other do-not-drop spot outdoors. $29.95, www.kenu.com

SLIM & PROTECTIVE: A selling point with the Thule Atmos X3 case is “exceptional protection with minimal bulk.” At 0.4inch in depth, this case adds very little to a naked iPhone. But its rubbery edges and polycarbonate frame give enough cushion to keep a phone safe from a shoulder-height drop, Thule cites. (Just don’t drop it glass side down; there’s no screen covering.) Funny bonus: Thule gives a 25-year warranty with the case to protect for decades after your phone has become obsolete. $39.95, www.thule.com

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

WINEINK

MARY MCAULEY INVITES YOU TO A CLAMBAKE IT’S MID-FEBRUARY, so a young man’s thoughts naturally turn to ... Clambakes? Well, as unseasonal as that may seem, my palate was recently hijacked and taken on a Nantucket sleigh-ride to a Clambake here in Aspen — by a young New York Sommelier. Mary McAuley, founder of Ripe Life Wines, has turned her attentions toward KELLY J. HAYES producing wines to pair with special occasions. Specifically, occasions like Clambakes. “As a girl we used to have Clambakes at our beach house on the Jersey Shore,” said McAuley as she sat in Aspen’s newest seafood shack, The Grey Lady, swirling a glass of Rosé. “When I became a Somm and was pouring wines, I was always looking for the best pairing with a dish. So I thought ‘why shouldn’t there be a wine for one of my favorite things? The Clambake.’” Showing the spunk that likely has been a family trait since birth, McAuley began the process of becoming a wine entrepreneur. She started by researching and registering names, designing logos and labels, and seeking out sources for the juice that would ultimately be bottled as The Clambake Chardonnay. Her initial release of 400 cases sold out and gave her both the resources and the inspiration to “go big” and purchase enough juice for 6,000 cases, which she plans to sell over the next two years. Her fledgling wine company has expanded to include a Clambake Rosé and she is exploring a plethora of other themed wines to accompany events. While McAuley does not actually make the wines that she is bringing to the marketplace, she is joining a long list of Sommeliers who have dabbled or leapt, feet first, into becoming producers and marketers

14

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

of wines. From here in Aspen alone we have seen former Little Nell Somms Richard Betts and Bobby Stuckey branch out in side endeavors that involved them using their talents as Somms to identify market opportunities and then find great vineyards to meet those opportunities. It was back in 2003 that Betts teamed with the Aspen/Miamibased art collector Richard Scholl to produce wines in Australia that changed the way we here thought about Sommeliers. His Grenachebased “Chronique” was a revelation and led Betts to make wines in France and California under the “my ESSENTIAL” label along with a well-received Mezcal called Sombra. He also branched out to become a writer, creating “The Essential Scratch and Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert,” a kids’ book for adults. Stuckey’s path from Somm to wine producer is a result of his passion for the wines of the Northern Italian region of Friuli, which was also the inspiration for Frasca, the acclaimed restaurant he opened in Boulder. Under the Scarpetta label, Stuckey and his partner, chef Lachlan McKinnon Patterson, also from Frasca, produce a number of varietals sourced from artisan producers in Italy’s most important wine regions. Stuckey the Sommelier fell in love with these wines and Stuckey the businessman found a way to share them. In one of the most talked about current transformations from Somm to producer, Rajat Parr, or Raj, the director of wine for the Michael Mina restaurant group, has turned his attention to producing great Pinot Noir. With four separate projects, including Evening Land and Sandhi (a partnership with Charles Banks), he is laser focused on producing world-class, Burgundian-style wines. For McAuley the goal is to find markets that will respond to the

Febr u ar y 1 2 - Febr u ar y 18, 20 15

wines that she is sourcing, and to provide the best juice possible at a reasonable price. Her 2013 The Clambake Chardonnay is from vineyards in Mendocino County in California and is made by veteran winemaker Davis Sundberg. The style is light, crisp and easy to drink. It is not designed to be a big buttery bottle with a need for contemplation, but rather something to twist (it’s under screw cap), pour, and sip without a lot of thought along with those clams or a lobster or two. Her 2103 Clambake Rosé is made from 100 percent Syrah sourced in Green Valley, California. So far, Ripe Life has had great response to the wines in places one might expect: Nantucket, Martha’s

Vineyard, the Jersey Shore. But McAuley’s trip to Aspen was part of a larger effort to expand the market for the wines. Aspen’s Grey Lady’s seafood-centric menu and laid-back atmosphere is a perfect match, as is their location in Manhattan where The Clambake is a staple of the menu. UNDER THE INFLUENCE 2013 SCARPETTA PINOT GRIGIO “This is really good,” said my wife at a recent après-ski gathering, “What is it?” When I told her it was one of the wines Bobby Stuckey makes under his Scarpetta label, she just smiled and said, “Of course it is.” Acidic enough to pair well with foods, or simple enough to sip alone, this Friulian gem has floral hints and the flavors of stone fruits.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

CHASING DOUGH

EVEN FOR ACE ARTISANS, BAKING THE PERFECT LOAF IS AN ELUSIVE QUEST WHEN A SUCCESSFUL DISH disappears suddenly from a menu, I always wonder: Why? Aspen restaurants aren’t known for evolving dishes; when something works, it tends to stick around for many, many moons (much to the chagrin of adventurous palates). So when I slid up to the bar at Meat & Cheese Restaurant & Farmshop recently, I noticed immediately that a AMANDA stellar chocolate bread RAE pudding — the smash dessert during the restaurant’s opening this fall — had ghosted already. WHY? Turns out, its absence has nothing to do with diner satisfaction. People loved the bread pudding and it sold out regularly, says Avalanche Cheese director of operations Brennan Buckley. Therein lay the problem: The kitchen doesn’t have the resources — i.e. stale bread — to keep up with demand. Instead, the shop sells out of its freshly baked farmhouse loaves daily. “We have the luxury of taking the things we don’t sell (in the farmshop) and using them in the restaurant,” Buckley says. “We were making bread pudding and putting crackers on the cheese plates…then we ran out of bread. So we got rid of it.” On average, Meat & Cheese slings about 10 to 15 farmhouse and six French walnut loaves plus 50 sandwiches on house-made ciabatta daily. On the menu, there’s a killer Bread Board (more on that later). Considering the irrational gluten fear that has the American public in a chokehold, the restaurant seems to be leading a local bread comeback. So why doesn’t Buckley — also the company’s head baker — just bake more bread? I find the answer behind the scenes. At 8:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, I step into Avalanche Cheese’s production facility in Basalt. In between cheese-aging caves on one side of a hallway and a sparkling charcuterie facility on the other, I find the bakery: A small room outfitted with a pair of industrial ovens, an 80-quart mixer, commercial sinks, and shelving. “This is where the magic happens,” a chipper Buckley declares by way of welcome. It’s warm in here; the ovens

are cranking at 500 degrees. On the prep table at the center of the room, Meat & Cheese pastry chef Katelyn Mangurian slashes the tops of 30 raw loaves of farmhouse bread. This will allow steam to expand and set the crumb* (see sidebar, opposite) during baking. Buckley notes the duo’s main mission: “Turn flour, water, yeast… into a chewy, moist bread with a hearty, crunchy crust.” It seems simple enough, but there’s more to the story. Mangurian was up at 5 a.m. to make the levain* — for tomorrow’s loaves, that is. Six hours later, that levain, or starter, will be ready for autolyse* at which point fermentation takes over for a few hours. Later, loaves are shaped in individual, cloth-lined baskets; proofed* or retarded* overnight; and baked the next morning. Meanwhile, Buckley and Mangurian will mix 30 pounds of what resembles cake batter: ciabatta dough. Folding this dough multiple times over two hours, they’ll produce 100 small square loaves — crustless, with airy interiors — for Meat & Cheese sandwiches. Though ciabatta is leavened with commercial yeast — the farmhouse and French-walnut breads are leavened by yeast and bacteria occurring naturally in the air, requiring long periods of rest — it does involve poolish* for flavor and moisture. All breads include 15 to 50 percent whole-wheat flour, with extra wheat germ added for flavor and nutrition. Mangurian also preps desserts for the restaurant (Vietnamese-coffee crème brûlée, apple crostata) and ingredients such as bourbon-toffee sauce and candied pecans. It’s time to bake the farmhouse bread prepped yesterday. Mangurian sprays raw loaves with water from a giant bottle that Buckley assures me is not weed killer. “We want to make it as moist as possible so it has time to expand before it sets, so we get that spring,” he explains. More internal water equals a moister crumb and longer shelf life. “That’s the issue we have out here in Colorado,” says Buckley, who ran another bakery mid-valley years ago and attended a two-week intensive course at the San Francisco Baking Institute before joining Avalanche in 2011. “If we can put more water in it, we can get it to last longer.” Buckley and Mangurian also mix

dough very slowly. “The more oxygen you whip into it, the less yellow and the more white the crumb is, the less flavor it’s gonna have,” Buckley explains. “We want open crumb, lots of holes, height, moist texture, nice crusts.” The alternative: “Overmix and make it super tight, like Wonder Bread.” I recall a comment Buckley made days earlier at the restaurant, while I was dunking a porchetta-fat seared farmhouse slice from the Bread Board into luscious “chicken vinaigrette,” a condiment far more decadent than it sounds. “Gluten’s not the devil!” he exclaimed. I press him to elaborate now, but he demurs. Have American consumers been brainwashed by marketing and advertising? We — none part of the tiny percentage of U.S. population that researchers estimate have a legitimate medical issue with gluten — know the answer. “These loaves are naturally leavened (with) super-long, slow fermentation, so it’s breaking down the carbohydrates that are the problem,” Buckley explains. “This is a 24-hour process, making it easier to digest. We’re not breaking new ground here. People have been doing this for a long time, in this style. This isn’t the baguette you get at City Market that’s par-baked, with dough conditioners to speed the thing along, nothing but crunch on the outside and no nutrition on the inside.” As Mangurian scrapes a baker’s

peel inside the oven to retrieve loaves, I understand why the age-old art of baking bread presents a never-ending challenge. “They could be darker,” Brennan notes, tapping the exterior. The loaf sounds hollow, so we slice it open to find wide bubbles within. “That’s the crumb he’s talking about,” Mangurian says. But Brennan suggests reducing baking time for a slightly thinner crust. “Stuff I see,” he admits, “nobody else can see. It’s a work in progress. Like life.” Even without the demand of the summer farmers’ markets, Brennan and Mangurian crank out up to 150 loaves of farmhouse and French walnut bread per week. They sell for $6, “a pretty fair price for something that’s made with love.” All this reminds me of another awesome dish that left the menu at Meat & Cheese too soon: chorizo bread salad with pickled grapes, aioli, parsley, and sherry vinegar. Will it ever return? “It’s got to! It was delicious, right?” Buckley says. “It was the best dish we had: croutons toasted in olive oil and chorizo fat, chunky pieces of chorizo, pickled grapes, aioli…herbaceous from the parsley, spicy from the chorizo, nice crunch. I think it hit all the right notes. It’ll come back… maybe in the springtime.” Amanda Rae grew up on Berkshire Mountain Bakery sourdough. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

ASPEN UNTUCKED

by BARBARA PLATTS

ART ON THE STREETS OF ASPEN ONE OF NEW YORK’S MOST TALKED ABOUT STREET ARTISTS COMES TO THE MOUNTAINS IN ASPEN, GALLERIES are as popular as fur coats. At my last count, there were just fewer than 30 venues and that’s not including exhibits in any of the other towns in the Roaring Fork Valley. Or any of the galleries that fill the large houses in town and on the mountains. This plethora of art retail probably feels excessive for some. But it allows for a vast selection of pieces, ranging from fine western art to contemporary glass sculpture. BARBARA PLATTS But head into one of the newest spots in town, Gallery 1949, and a different type of art is currently situated on the walls. It’s the types of work that are splashed on several walls in Manhattan and that almost sold out at a show in Green Point Gallery in Brooklyn last month. At first glance, these slightly cartoonish works, typically created with a mix of colored pencil and ink, look complex. But that’s only the half of it. Once a person spends a bit of time looking at the different characters and how they all intertwine and connect, a story starts to appear. A story that gives a brief glimpse into what goes on in the mind of artist Matthew Denton Burrows. Burrows, 26, is a Manhattanbased artist who was recently named one of the top street artists to watch by Paper Magazine. He was born in raised in the big city before going to LeHigh University in Pennsylvania. There, a professor took an interest in the doodles he made in his notebook during class and told him he had a real talent. “He gave me permission to take it seriously,” Burrows said. “He taught me how to really see things.” After getting his bachelor’s degree, he went for his masters in illustration at The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. There he worked

on his ability to tell stories through his work. Today, he continues to do that, both on paper and on the walls of buildings in the city. He is currently the project manager for the Centerfuge Public Art Project, which showcases new and experienced street artists on trailers and walls around a construction site in lower Manhattan. The artwork changes every two to three months. “It’s always about bringing in new people and celebrating people who have done [street art and graffiti art] for a long time,” Burrows said. Burrows also co-founded Dripped On Productions, a company that integrates street art, graffiti and fine art into the entertainment industry. They are currently partnering with music festivals to bring art to multi-day music events. Burrows has made an impression throughout New York City. Now, he brings his artwork to a much different place, a small ski town in the Rocky Mountains. “I don’t want my artwork to be tied down to one gallery or one city,” he said. “It’s about getting to new places.” Gallery 1949 will exhibit Burrows’ work until Feb. 20. The artist is aware that this is a different type of

art then visitors to Aspen are used to seeing, but he’s excited to bring a new style to town for people to see. And we are excited to have him. For more information on Burrows, check out his website at dentonburrows.com. Barbara Platts urges Aspen visitors and locals to check out Burrows’ work. It’s different, but it’s incredibly meaningful. LAKE BLED: JEWEL OF SLOVENIA AMID SPECTACULAR LANDSCAPE IF SLOVENIA IS Europe’s undiscovered jewel box, Lake Bled is its precious diamond. Tucked in the northwestern corner of Slovenia, between Austria and Italy, Lake Bled’s emerald-green waters create a spectacular landscape, with a lush, tiny island and a church tower peeking out of evergreens surrounded by the rocky, snowcovered Julian Alps. A majestic 16th century castle stands on a steep cliff, and a narrow pathway winds through a thick pine forest. It’s like something from a kitsch painting — only the picture-perfect appeal of Lake Bled is for real. The island on the lake is the only island in all of Slovenia, the small central European country of about 2 million people that is privileged to have both an opening onto the Adriatic Sea as well as chunks of the Alps. Slovenia packs an abundance of contrasting landscapes and cultures, and it’s also proud of being the only country in the world with the word “love” in its name. Time appears to have stopped

Local wines are well-known, as is Borovnicka, a sweet-tasting blueberry liqueur. Bled is crowded with tourists and swimmers in summer. But the best time to visit is in winter, when its waters sometimes freeze all over creating a giant skating rink, allowing visitors to walk shore to shore, as well as to the island. “The beauty and bore of Bled is what makes it so appealing,” said Ruzica Katic, a visitor from Serbia. “There is no better relaxation than this.”

JUST THE FACTS FORMATION OF THE LAKE: Once, there was a tectonic basin located at the place of the present lake, which was later on carved by the Bohinj glacier. The glacier found itself in front of an obstacle – a giant rock which it carved and chafed against for so long that only the island we know today remained. The ice melted and the basin was filled with water, thus creating a 2.12 km long and up to 1.30 km wide Lake Bled. Its maximum depth reaches up to 30.6 m, making it ideal for diving exploration. THERMAL SPRINGS: The tectonic origin of the lake is confirmed by thermal springs located at the north-east side of the lake. These springs are the cause why the temperature of the lake can reach pleasant 23 °C during the summer season. Today, these thermal springs are led into three swimming pools at the Grand Hotel Toplice, Hotel Park and Hotel Golf.

SIX in the CITY WHO’S WHO IN ASPEN’S BOOMING RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA BUSINESS

by RICK CARROLL

WORKING CLASS-ASPEN RESIDENTS often lament they must go downvalley or online to buy underwear and socks. Most restaurants don’t stay open past 11. The town doesn’t have a detox facility. And flying in and out of town is hardly hassle-free. But when it comes to cannabis, Aspen has got you covered. There are more pot shops than there are liquor stores, pharmacies, supermarkets and gas stations, not to mention churches, ski mountains, hardware stores and dry cleaners. Aspen hasn’t seen the push back that other Colorado communities have seen since the first recreational dispensaries opened in the state in January 2014. Some towns have put limits on the number of cannabis stores, while others have outlawed them altogether. Concerns range from marijuana’s long-lasting impacts on children, as well as adults and society, to the potential for more crime and cannabis being a gateway substance to harder drugs. But the industry marches on in Colorado, in spite of it being a cash-only business. Last week the Huffington Post pointed out, referring to a study done by the cannabis research firm The ArcView Group, that legal marijuana sales totaled $2.7 billion in 2014, up from $1.5 billion in 2013. Recreational pot is legal in four states — Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon. Voters in Washington, D.C., also approved recreational cannabis in the November elections, but sales of the product remain banned in the U.S. capital. Meanwhile, in Aspen, when Silverpeak Apothecary and Stash opened last March, it could go down as a watershed moment in modern Aspen’s history. Four more dispensaries followed suit. For cannabis users, call it the joy of six. But for those opposed to the budding industry, it’s the opposite. The Aspen Times Weekly reached out to the proprietors of the half-dozen dispensaries that are peppered throughout the downtown core. Each shop has their own identity, from the products they sell to the staff and interior design. But the looming question is: Is there room for six cannabis shops in Aspen? Or even more? Shop operators answered those questions and a number of other ones. Here’s a look at their responses ...

Besides our badges, we believe comfortable employees make comfortable customers. We encourage our staff to express themselves while maintaining an appropriate appearance. WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM YOUR COMPETITORS? After six years of business, through trial and error, we have learned that Aspen locals keep this town going. We give fair prices to locals and tourists alike, and place a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of our diverse medical patient population. WHAT’S YOUR MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT? Our most unique products include our wide selection of indica, sativa, and hybrid flower and the interactive method we use to display them. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? Our best-selling products come from Highway 710. They make consistent, high quality edibles and concentrates. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET FROM CONSUMERS? “Can I fly home with this?” We ensure that our staff is well versed in the law and can relay that information to our customers. DO YOU BELIEVE ASPEN CAN SUPPORT SIX CANNABIS DISPENSARIES? The competition is strong in Aspen, may the best bud win. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? We would love to expose other states to the potential benefits medicinal marijuana can have from a financial and health standpoint. It’s been a personally rewarding experience for our employees to see the wide reaching benefits our products have on consumers, so it would be great to help other states explore those benefits.

GREEN DRAGON CANNABIS CO. STORE ADDRESS: 409 E. Hyman Ave. (under New York Pizza) COMPANY OWNER: Ron Radtke DATE OPENED: Recreational shop opened in 2014, company established in 2009 NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES: 50-plus Roaring Fork Valley locals SQUARE FEET: 1,300 DO YOU HAVE A DRESS CODE? Come as you are. WHAT MAKE YOU DIFFERENT THAN YOUR COMPETITORS? Locally grown bud available in a friendly, non-pretentious atmosphere, tended by a laid back and cheerful staff. WHAT’S YOUR MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT? 3.5 gram Dragon Joints, full nug-run concentrates, and Colorado-blown glass. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? Everything. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET FROM CONSUMERS? Now that I’ve made my purchase, where can I consume and smoke legally? DO YOU BELIEVE ASPEN CAN SUPPORT SIX CANNABIS DISPENSARIES? Yes. With Aspen embracing free-market cannabis-capitalism, they are allowing one of the world’s largest social experiments to take place. Part of that process is free choice of the consumers, and without variety there is no choice. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Nothing. The industry is a living thing that is growing organically and ever evolving. Moving forward, enforcement should be an educational process, and not operate under an old-school us-versus-them punishment dynamic, and we feel this is happening. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? The perception that the industry is “run by stoners,” “has no infrastructure,” “has disregard for public safety.” “The trouble with you is the trouble with me; you got two good eyes but you still don’t see.” — Grateful Dead.

NATIVE ROOTS ASPEN STORE ADDRESS: 308 S. Hunter St. COMPANY OWNER: Josh Ginsberg DATE OPENED: Jan. 21, 2015 NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES: 10 SQUARE FEET: Approximately 1,250 DO YOU HAVE A DRESS CODE? Yes, clean and professional with some sort of Native Roots apparel. WHAT MAKE YOU DIFFERENT THAN YOUR COMPETITORS? Our brand, our culture, our fresh perspective on the industry and understanding of the products we sell, our quality of cannabis, and the fact that we are downright the hippest, most fun and coolest place to shop. We try to build and set the trend of what this industry will be. WHAT’S YOUR MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT? Foria, a cannabis-infused sensual enhancement topical designed for female pleasure. Manufactured and distributed by Native Roots for Foria. Launched at the Aspen store last week during the X Games. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? Cannabis then concentrates. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET FROM CONSUMERS? Do we grow the weed in the store? Second would be how exactly something will make them feel? This is where our highly trained and skilled staff of budtenders steps in and eases any of their anxiousness or answers any questions they might have. DO YOU BELIEVE ASPEN CAN SUPPORT SIX CANNABIS DISPENSARIES? Yes. There are plenty of locals and visitors to Aspen during the summer and winter months to fill six stores. The off-seasons will be slim, but that’s the same for all businesses in the mountain community. Native Roots knows that we need to stick to our business model of running our shop like any other service business selling any other widget. We watch every input and output to make sure that we are always providing the customer with the best product for the best value, while internally everything runs like a top. In the end we are a service business, so as long as we give exceptional service, we will continue our legacy in Aspen regardless of the store count. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Native Roots would love to see our business treated like any other sort of retail business. Especially since our industry generates such huge amounts of tax dollars for our state. I want to be able to bank like any other business, process money like any other business, pay my staff like any other business, pay income and other taxes on the money I generate in my legal store like any other business, not have employees denied for mortgages because they work in this industry, I could go on and on. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? That everyone is a bunch of stoners. I personally get up at 6 a.m., go to the gym from 7 to 8 a.m., home and on my email at 8:30 a.m. and go from meeting to meeting until back at my computer until around midnight before I get to bed. I am married, with an amazing daughter, a second on the way, and I wear a sport coat and jeans to work every day. I meet with executives of Fortune 500 companies. I ride my snowmobile for fun every chance I get and spend every other free minute with my wife and child. Do I smoke, sure, but only on the weekends and only if I am out socially. If that makes me a stoner, then I guess I am a very successful and efficient one that knows how to balance my time with family and play while running one of the largest cannabis companies in the world.

SILVERPEAK APOTHECARY STORE ADDRESS: 520 E. Cooper Ave. COMPANY OWNER: Jordan Lewis DATE OPENED: March 2015 for recreational; 2009 for medical NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES: More than a handful SQUARE FEET: 1,500 DO YOU HAVE A DRESS CODE? Our employees wear Silverpeak Attire WHAT MAKE YOU DIFFERENT THAN YOUR COMPETITORS? 1) Education: Silverpeak created the Guide to Responsible Consumption, which covers appropriate serving sizes, time till onset and duration of effect for all forms of cannabis, as well as legal parameters for the usage, storage and transport of the products. 2) Community involvement: Silverpeak was instrumental in the formation of the Valley Marijuana Council, a coalition of community leaders including the Pitkin County Sheriff ’s Office, Aspen Skiing Co., city of Aspen, Pitkin County, Aspen Police Department, Aspen Valley Hospital, Aspen School District and Aspen Chamber Resort Association. 3) Customer experience: The shop itself is the most dramatic difference from any other cannabis company in Aspen, or anywhere in the world. With handcrafted wood and glass displays, custom lighting, millwork and design, employees who are educators not salespeople, and strict compliance to state laws, the shopping experience at Silverpeak is second to none. WHAT’S YOUR MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT? Locally grown product — sustainable, technologically advanced farming practices coupled with mountain water and sunlight are the main ingredients. High Valley Farms, which is right here in the Roaring Fork Valley, takes every detail into consideration. From seed to sensation, there is no one growing cannabis like Silverpeak. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? It is a fairly even split between flower and infused products. People from out of state or international seem to trend more toward the edibles because they are somewhat of a novelty. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET FROM CONSUMERS? Where and how can I consume? Which is one of the reasons Silverpeak created the Guide to Responsible Consumption. DO YOU BELIEVE ASPEN CAN SUPPORT SIX CANNABIS DISPENSARIES? Time will tell. Aspen residents and visitors will make that determination. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? It would be nice to have easier access to banking. There is no legitimate industry in the world struggling with this as much as the legal cannabis industry.

STASH STORE ADDRESS: 710 E. Durant Ave, Unit E-1, (Beside City Market) OWNERS: Owned by Garrett and Shawna Patrick DATE OPENED: We opened medical dispensary in 2011, rec in March 2014 NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES: We currently employ a total of 12 employees to staff our retail store and cultivation facility. SQUARE FEET: 650 DO YOU HAVE A DRESS CODE? We do have a dress code but do not require employees to wear uniforms. WHAT MAKE YOU DIFFERENT THAN YOUR COMPETITORS? All of our cannabis is locally grown in soil, hand-watered, hand-trimmed, and slowly cured to perfection to ensure the highest quality and THC percentage, unlike most cultivation facilities who grow hydroponically and harvest their plants two months earlier than we do. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? Our best-selling edibles are Edipure Watermelons and Sweet-N-Sours. Our best-selling strain is our locally grown Chemdawg #4 and Banana Kush. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET FROM CONSUMERS? A lot of customers are new to the edible products, so they often ask about how to use them safely. Some ask if they can take it out of state. Some customers ask about the difference between indica, hybrid, sativa. DO YOU BELIEVE ASPEN CAN SUPPORT SIX CANNABIS DISPENSARIES? No. Some will most likely go out of business and some will have to find other ways to sell their products because there are not enough customers to support this industry year-round. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Banking. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? The most common misconception is that it is an easy business to get into and manage, and that all marijuana businesses are making millions of dollars.

MYSTERY IN THE MOUNTAINS

NOVELIST MARK STEVENS CRAFTS A GLENWOOD SPRINGS THRILLER HUNTING GUIDE ALLISON Coil finds a body in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, apparently cut down by a mountain lion. Down in Glenwood Springs, on the Grand Avenue bridge, a U.S. Senate candidate is shot during a campaign event and a dogged local reporter begins chasing the story. Are the two events linked? Of course. They happen at the outset of a mystery novel: Mark Stevens’ new “Trapline,” the third in his Allison Coil series. How it all comes together plays out over a well-executed and suspenseful narrative following the self-reliant outdoorswoman and intrepid journalist as they stay a step ahead of the police. The book is a thrilling read for fans of the genre, filled with twists, political intrigue and a dose of wilderness. For Glenwood and Roaring Fork Valley residents, it will provide many nods of recognition at locales like Doc Holliday’s, the Mt. Sopris Inn and the blighted Dos Hermanos.

Based in Denver, Stevens is a former reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post and other outlets who currently works in public relations while writing fiction on the side. “I hope I got it right,” Stevens says of the local setting. “The cops might think otherwise, but that’s fiction.” The first of his Allison Coil series, “Antler Dust,” was published in 2007. Stevens says Coil was inspired by a woman he met in the Flat Tops while on a day-long horseback ride with his wife. He had previously written some mystery novels – all set in more urban environments — but they had all stayed in his proverbial desk drawer. As he began imagining Coil sleuthing around the mountains, he knew he had something special on his hands. “By the end of the ride I realized I had a fantastic setting in the Flat Tops and a woman who ran against

IF YOU GO...

stereotypes – she’s young, she’s excited about the outdoors and everything from the bugs to the weeds and the flowers and the cloud formations – and I realized I couldn’t set it anywhere else,” says Stevens. He didn’t originally conceive Allison as the protagonist of a series, but she has stuck with him. Stevens signed with a new publisher — Minnestota’s Midnight Ink — for “Trapline,” and it appears that readers will have many more Allison Coil mysteries – and more fictional West Slope intrigue — to come. The fourth book in the series, “Lake of Fire,” is due out in September. Stevens is currently writing a fifth. “What keeps me interested in Alison is that the big question, for her, is how is she going to engage in civilization?” he explained. An admirer of western mystery writers like Craig Johnson and Tony Hillerman, Stevens enjoys working in the wide creative borders of the mystery novel. “It’s an amazing, flexible genre that opens up and allows a lot of

people to bring different flavors to it,” he says The new book admirably stretches its narrative beyond the timeworn sleuthing plot points of a whodunit, as the mysteries at the center of “Trapline” lead readers into the thorny issue of illegal immigration and private U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers. Stevens says he’s found western Colorado a particularly rich setting, allowing him to put characters not only in its grand mountain-scape but also in the regional conflicts over immigration and conservation. Stevens’ last book in the series, “Buried by the Roan,” wove hydraulic fracturing into the story. “I can’t believe it hasn’t been fictionalized more,” he says of the West Slope. “There isn’t an issue that you can’t find in that area. Glenwood in particular is a really interesting crossroads with rivers and roads and the railroad.” atravers@aspentimes.com

Levon is a 2 year old, 83 pound yellow Labrador Retriever and Birdie is a 3 year old 40 pound Beagle mix. They are buddies and we would love to see them stay together. Do you have room and love in your heart for 2 great dogs? They are both wonderful, easy dogs who were surrendered together. Both get along well with other dogs, love people, are house trained and love to play. They enjoy their walks and have a good sleep all snuggled up. Whether your are Buying or Selling Real Estate – Rely on an Expert to Assist.

“Doug Leibinger is a true professional in the real estate industry. He is exceptionally responsive and knows his local Roaring Fork Valley market inside and out. He has represented me on both the buyer’s side and the seller’s side and has negotiated for me when the market was more challenging. Doug is patient and responsive. He worked with me for years until I found just the right property for our family. In fact, we purchased our home based solely on Doug’s opinion because I was unable to quickly travel to Aspen to view the property in person. After consulting with Doug, we had an offer in after only viewing pictures on the internet. The property was unbelievable, everything he said it was and more, and we would have missed the opportunity without Doug’s great skills. Bottom line - I trust Doug. He listens, works hard all throughout the process, and truly cares about his clients. And if that were not enough, his easy going

personality makes him a sincere pleasure to work with.

BOOK REVIEW

‘FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE’ “FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE,” the seventh novel from Georgiaborn author Robert Bausch, opens in the 1870s, with Bobby Evans, a serial “deserter” from the Union Army, wandering aimlessly through the Montana, Wyoming and Dakota territories. He’s an unsettling character: a man without a purpose, the kind of hustler who took the cash bounty for enlisting several times, only to slip away and re-enlist elsewhere under a different name. Committed only to saving his own skin, answering threats with his finger on the trigger, Evans ends up traveling with and learning Native skills from a chance companion, Big Tree, “a Crow brave … a statue of what God

wanted when he dreamed up the creature he would call ‘man.’” Later on, though, Evans helps the military round up Sioux and Cheyenne who refuse to move to reservations or abide by treaties. Stumbling through a landscape “as big as any whole earth I ever dreamed of,” he observes both the white man’s misguided response to the Indians and the bloody retaliatory tactics of the tribes in the Yellowstone River region. Haunted by the echo of screams from the Civil War and the sound of “a bullet thwack(ing) into the breast of a fellow only inches away from me,” Evans trusts nothing and no one.

He impulsively attacks both red and white men, leaving human wreckage in his wake. But a moment of truth arrives when he must decide whether to keep moving, or to stay and care for a person he has hurt. In the rising hills surrounding the Little Bighorn River, against the violent chaos of Custer’s Last Stand, this amoral man is finally caught in a web of moral choices, where he must choose his own thread and take the consequences.
