FILM OSCAR-NOMINATED AND EMMY-WINNING actor William H. Macy has moved behind the camera for the first time for his new film, “Rudderless.” Macy brings his directorial debut to Paepcke Auditorium on Saturday, July 5 for a special preview presented by Aspen Film. The film will be followed by an on-stage conversation between Macy and his wife Felicity Huffman, a Woody Creek native and actress with acclaimed roles in films like “Transamerica” and the television show “Desperate Housewives” among her credits. Macy, best known for roles in films such as “Fargo” and “Boogie Nights” and the Showtime series “Shameless,” premiered “Rudderless” at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and is readying it for distribution later this year. The film is a musical drama — with six full songs — starring Billy Crudup as Sam, a man devastated by the death of his son. Sam finds a box of his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, begins playing the music, and finds himself in a successful rock band. The film co-stars Selena Gomez, Laurence Fishburne and Huffman. Already at work on his next project as a director, Macy appears to be at the beginning of a new phase of his career with “Rudderless.” “It was so out of my comfort zone, so out of my wheelhouse, so much work, and such intense work, that it shook up my system in a delightful way and I haven’t felt so alive in years,” Macy says. “I’m going to be candid, it’s all I want to do.”
The film “’Rudderless” is actor William H. Macy’s directorial debut. Macy brings the movie to Aspen for a preview screening Saturday night. After the film, he’ll discuss it with the local audience and his wife Felicity Huffman, who also acts in the film.
CURRENTEVENTS POPULAR MUSIC
The Aspen Music Fesitval and School’s percussion ensemble, led by director/ conductor Jonathan Haas, will perform arrangements of works by rock pioneer Frank Zappa on Tuesday at Belly Up Aspen.
Hip-hop collective Jurassic 5 will perfom twice this weekend, with shows at Belly Up Aspen and at the Wanderlust Festival in Snowmass Village.
THERE ARE TWO OPPORTUNITIES to see the newly reunited Jurassic 5 over the Independence Day weekend in Aspen and Snowmass. The hip-hop greats returned to the stage at last year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and are now on their first tour since 2006. They play Belly Up Aspen on July 4 and an outdoor show on Fanny Hill at the new Wanderlust Festival in Snowmass on July 5. In May, the rap collective released “The Way We Do It,” their first new track since getting back together. Based on its combination of White Stripes samples and head-bobbing rhymes, they didn’t get rusty during the hiatus.
CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR THE FIRST TIME, the Aspen Music Festival and School will stage a performance at Belly Up Aspen on Tuesday, July 8. The show by the festival’s percussion ensemble will offer a tribute to the great rock, jazz and orchestral composer Frank Zappa. Led by percussion ensemble director/conductor Jonathan Haas, the show will feature rarely heard arrangements of work by Zappa and “Father of Electronic Music” Edgar Varese. Tickets are $15 for standing room and $25 for seats. It begins at 8 p.m.

Jul y 3 - Jul y 9 , 2014
THERE IS A FILM on the market this summer, titled “Citizen Koch,” that you likely will not read about anywhere in the mainstream press, or perhaps anywhere but right here, unless you are searching for the title on the Internet. That’s because the film, in effect, has been repressed thanks to the economic might of David Koch, one of the infamous Koch brothers of Tea Party fame, who has given millions to PBS and to the stations WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston, and is a trustee of the PBS public broadcasting network. But, more about that later. For now, a bit about the film, which I first learned of on the political blog, The Good Fight, hosted by Ben Winkler, who is working hard to rip the scabs off every festering wound in the body politic of this benighted nation of ours. The film, by Oscar-nominated documentarians Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, is a kind of stream-of-consciousness examination of the ongoing dissolution of democracy, starting with the notorious Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010. That decision canceled out previous legislation to limit the effect of money in national, state and local politics and paved the path for corporations and wealthy individuals to have their way with our political system, by freeing them up to donate practically as much money as they want to in as many ways as they can dream up. The result, as can be seen in every election cycle since, has been remarkable, disappointing, even disgusting, as the wealthy have gleefully started buying up elective posts from the heights of federal power to the lows of county commissioners in key (mostly energyrelated) regions. By inundating political races at all levels with money, much of it from secret sources, the right-wing oligarchs have managed to turn politics on its head and to paradoxically bankrupt the political process by drowning it in cash. The film also takes a look at the role in that dissolution played by the brothers David and Charles Koch, the billionaire owners of the monstrous energy and chemical company, Koch Industries, and in particular on the role the brothers played in the infamous series of events in Wisconsin in 2011. Readers may remember that as the year when Gov. Scott Walker and his Republican-dominated legislature destroyed the collective bargaining rights of teachers, state workers and other groups, igniting a fire storm of protest
from the citizenry. Interestingly, the fight over the union-busting moves in the Wisconsin Legislature lea to recall elections, and a nasty electoral fight for a state supreme court seat, all of which got the Koch treatment — flood the halls with money and watch the opposition drown. But, back to the case of “Citizen Koch.” I should note that Deal and Lessin’s most widely known previous film was the 2008 documentary, “Trouble The Water,” about a couple surviving in New Orleans before and after the devastating 2005 Hurricane Katrina, for which the filmmakers were nominated for an Academy Award. So, when they started out to make “Citizen Koch,” the pair was promised $150,000 backing from PBS officials last year, but well after they began filming the public television network backed out of the deal. Seems David Koch had complained about a documentary aired a year earlier by PBS titled “Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream.” The Oscar-winning film, by documentarian Alex Gibney, explored the wealth and influence parked at one particular address, an apartment building at 740 Park Ave. in New York City, which happens to contain one of David Koch’s many hangouts. The film took a hard, critical look at Koch, among other denizens at 740 Park, and Koch complained. Officials at PBS, after seeing some of the early content of the Deal/Lessin film and in an apparent move of self-censorship, pulled the funding, depriving the film of its promised 9 million potential viewers and leaving the filmmakers to turn to the Kickstarter website to raise money from individual donors to finish the film. “Citizen Koch” is now being marketed almost like an underground film from its website (www.citizenkoch.com), with showings across the U.S. The closest screening to the Roaring Fork Valley is on July 27 at the Paradise Theater in Paonia, for one night only, but the filmmakers are hoping for a groundswell of demand from citizens who want to see what Deal and Lessins have to say. So, dear readers, if you have a yen to see what it’s all about, and can’t make it to Paonia in late July, contact your local cinema and request a showing. And in doing so, strike your own blow against the growing influence of the right wing and their wealthy patrons. It’s that simple.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES
FROM the VAULT
by TIM WILLOUGHBY
Teamster John Sheehan with his trusted horses.
HORSE SENSE Young girls dream of owning a horse; but not my mother, who acquired her distaste for everything equine in a strange manner.
Mother’s father, John Sheehan, knew all there was to know about horses because he spent most of his years as a teamster. He came to Aspen in 1887 to work for Larry Marony, who hauled lumber from the sawmills and distributed coal to homes and mines. Daybreak to sunset Sheehan worked with teams of horses, feeding and caring for them and driving them from his wagon perch. Like people, horses have personalities, and working with the same horses each day you develop your favorites. Sheehan was also the teamster for one of Aspen’s fire stations. He spent many hours there, after work and on Sundays. Although he had to care for the fire wagon horses, much of that time was spent socially with firemen who escaped home for time with their peers and got one weekly free hot water bath. That perk was considered a luxury in the days before most homes had running water, and even if they did, it was cold.

When Sheehan’s fire station decided to retire one of his favorite horses, he decided it would be the perfect gift for his eldest daughter, my mother. This was not for sport; it was primarily for her basic transportation. As the daughter of a teamster,

comfortable with mounting and dismounting them. For several weeks she rode her horse with pride. At that time girls were not allowed to venture from home without being with an adult, or unless they had a specific place to go, like to run an errand. Mother navigated around town, enjoyed the view from atop a horse, and relished the short time it took her to get to
places that had taken much longer on foot. Then it happened. One day there was a fire. Her old, plodding horse dutifully turned toward the station and galloped all the way, giving mother the scariest ride ever. The horse had been trained to run to the fire station from wherever it was whenever the signal rang. Mother had not been forewarned. Mother learned that you don’t always have control of your horse and that thought, at 8 years of age, convinced her for life that the newfangled invention, the automobile, was the best means of transportation for her peace and sanity. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@ comcast.net.

THE ANTICIPATION FOR ASPEN’S Fourth of July celebration was evident in the July 2, 1912 Aspen Democrat-Times: “This year’s Fourth of July celebration will be one long to be remembered. At 9 a.m. the people will assemble at the Union Depot to welcome Governor Shafroth and escort him to the Hotel Jerome. At 10:00 a.m. the street sporting events will begin, thirteen of which will be given during the morning. At the fairgrounds beginning at 2:30 in the afternoon there will be the baseball game between Marble and Aspen teams. In the evening at the Wheeler Opera House Governor Shafroth will address the people and there will be a free motion picture show.” There was also a ball scheduled in the evening at Fraternal Hall, which promised to be “the crowning feature of the day’s celebration... There is no need for you to leave Aspen to have a good time on the Fourth.” This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org

G D WEEK THE
Bear
Bear is a gorgeous 3 1/2 year old, 95 pound Great Dane/Mastiff/Aussie mix who needs a new home. His mom was a Dane/Mastiff and his dad was a blue Merle Australian Shepherd. Bear is a very loyal guy who needs proper exercise every day and a leader with calm confidence as he is a big boy. He needs to learn leash manners and would probably do best with a gentle leader due to his size. Bear is house-trained, crate trained, knows how to use a doggy door (but doesn’t have to have one), knows the commands sit, down, stay, come, ‘up’ (to get in the car) and quiet (to stop barking). He is not destructive when left alone and so stunning, a head-turner for sure - truly an amazing dog! Bear is an energetic, happy fella who loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and is good with dogs and people when out and about. No cats. If you are interested in this guy, please fill out an application a www. luckydayrescue.org or call Rachel at 970-618-3662. LUCKY DAY ANIMAL RESCUE OF COLORADO

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE
WINEINK
TOUR TIME
BIKES, BUBBLY AND A WHOLE LOT MORE I KNOW. You thought you would turn to this page and find a few timely suggestions on wine for that Fourth of July cookout you have planned. Actually that would be a great idea for a column, as we are on the cusp of both that patriotic event and a three-day summer weekend. But we have both been there before. You’ll be fine. And I’d rather talk France. The KELLY J. Tour de France. HAYES For most Americans, the Tour de France is simply some bike race in Europe that has been overshadowed by scandal. But beyond the sideshow of innuendo and sound bites about doping in the sport, there is much about the Tour to recommend it. Begin with the spectacle itself. A hundred riders in electric-colored jerseys take to cobblestone streets and impossibly steep switchbacks, exhibiting courage, stamina and skill over 21 stages. Better than the World Cup, that’s for sure. Around our house, the Tour is an excuse to come home each July evening, fire up the grill and hang out watching the spectacular scene on the NBC Sports network. It also allows us to drink a score (plus one) of the wonderful wines from France. While we love wines from around the world, the excuse to spend three weeks enjoying the various wine regions of the world’s greatest wine country is simply too
good to pass up. It may not be as great as being there, but it’s close. On July 5, the 101st edition of the Tour takes its first turns in…. Leeds? Hardly a wine town, I know, but historic just the same. In fact the first three stages of this year’s tour will actually take place in the United Kingdom as the event continues to go more “Euro” instead of staying within the confines of the title country. Perhaps a Newcastle Brown Ale or a Bass should be the drink of choice through Monday. In fact, the riders won’t reach the cusp of a great wine region until July 10 when they ride into Reims and the Champagne region. The next day, they begin a 234.5 kilometer, six-hour ride with a cruise down the famed L’Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. The French are fond of saying that the L’Avenue de Champagne is the most valuable street in all the world, surpassing the Avenue des Champs Elysees, Rodeo Drive, that mall in Dubai, and even Mill Street here in Aspen. That’s because under its street are the caves that house the wines of makers like Moët & Chandon, Pol Roger, Mercier and more. This will clearly call for some bubbly. Ideally I would go with a Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage 2004 and celebrate Lance Armstrong’s sixth win in the Tour, which took place during the summer of that vintage. But alas, I don’t have one. And also Lance’s Tour victory was, well, voided. So instead I will pop a nonvintage Moet &
Chandon Rose Imperial. Yum. Stage 10, on July 14, will be about Alsace as the Tour reaches the hills just south of the region that marks the border between France and Germany before finishing in a ski resort called La Planche des Belles Filles. The climbers, including Columbia’s Nairo Quintana, who finished second in last year’s Tour behind Chris Froome, should thrive in these slopes. So do the great Gewürztraminer, Silvaner, Riesling and Pinot Gris white grapes. The rocky Vosges Mountains provide soils that help these grapes thrive. For this night I think a bottle of the 2011 FE Trimbach Riesling ought to do quite nicely. There will be days spent in Jura and the Alps, but the final week will see some rides in the south of France through the LanguedocRoussillon (LAHN-guh-dock)
(ROO-see-yohn). This massive region makes up to 30 percent of all the wine produced in France but is not as well known here as, say, the wines of Burgundy or Bordeaux. But there are great buys to be had. I think by this week I will be ready for some red, and I’ll avail myself of both a bargain and the opportunity to sip a little Syrah from a noted producer, Gerard Bertrand. The Gerard Bertrand Syrah-Carignan Minervois 2010. Tough to find, but if you order now on Wine.com you’ll get it for $14 before the final turns of the wheel. Enjoy the Tour. Kelly J. UNDER THE INFLUENCE Having been in San Diego for the last week or so I have been imbibing in more beer than wine. A favorite, especially at the Stone Brewery, has been the Stone Levitation Ale. Lighter in alcohol, amber in color, a great session beer.

WINES FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY So I can’t resist making a suggestion or two for the Fourth. With your burgers you’ll want something red, for the fireworks something that sparkles and for that piece of pie, something that will finish your night just right. KLINKER BRICK ZINFANDEL OLD VINE ‘11 Go to Lodi for the Old Vine Zin. This will be great juice for a juicy burger. GRUET BRUT You need to sparkle, but stay American on the Fourth. Nothing meets that criteria like Gruet from New Mexico. CHERRY TART 2012 PINOT NOIR Pinot for dessert? Yep. Jayson Woodbridge has produced a fruit basket from California.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS
ART & SOUL
DO DAZZLING PLATES MEAN TASTIER FOOD? “WHOA, IS THAT your salad?” My friend seated across the table at Rustique Bistro last week widened her eyes. “So cool!” It was cool. The Grilled Romaine Salad is composed of an intact head of marinated lettuce, wilted and charred in spots, roasted heirloom baby carrots draped over top, with thinly sliced radish rounds lined up alongside. Roasted mushrooms, thick peach slices, and French Roquefort AMANDA crumbles finish the RAE scene over a pool of tangerine and passion fruit dressing and dramatic zigzag of balsamic vinegar. It was striking, and I daresay it tasted better than if the ingredients had been haphazardly dumped onto the plate. At least that’s what experimental psychologists at the University of Oxford in England discovered recently. The “Taste of Kandinsky” study confirmed that when a salad was arranged to look like a colorful abstract artwork — Wassily Kandinsky’s “Painting No. 201,” in particular — diners rated it as being more visually appealing, more complex, and tasting better than the same salad jumbled up. They were also willing to pay twice as much for the dish. The notion that presentation influences perception is nothing new, of course. But this study reinforces the idea and calls to mind more examples. A friend told me that when she tried raw scallops at Kenichi for the first time — hesitantly — the pretty arrangement of slices inside the scallop shell pushed her to taste. She was surprised; he liked them. Maybe that’s because scallops are awesome, but the display may have had something to do with it, too. I still think about an April 2013 dessert at Plato’s Restaurant at the Aspen Meadows that charmed

me: A perfectly molded panna cotta above a dramatic swoop of strawberry sauce. Instantly I associated the red shape with Salvador Dali’s famed Mae West Lips Sofa, which I’d seen at his museum in Paris. That reminded me of wandering through the narrow streets of Montmartre as a carefree, 20-year-old student — imagery that influenced me positively between bites, I’m sure. And pancakes: They always tasted better when Mom poured them with Mickey Mouse ears. “You eat with your eyes first — that’s something they drill into you in culinary school,” says Mark Hardin, chef-owner of Craft Catering in Carbondale. “If it looks good, it makes you want to taste it. That’s where you get excited about it or not.” Take a dish Hardin served last week during a five-course beer pairing at the Roaring Fork Beer Company tasting room, hosted with the Aspen Young Professionals Association: A single spear of charred local asparagus wrapped with a slice of house-cured lox and topped with delicate slivers of carrot, red onion, and radish. Three dots of jalapeño crema completed the picture. I wondered why the raw fish resembled tuna; turns out that Hardin rubs the salmon with shredded beets to impart a pink hue. It was my favorite dish of the evening — which is funny, because I don’t usually enjoy salmon. “Since I was five years old I was taking fine arts classes, drawing, painting, and a lot of that comes from my mom, who works as a graphic designer,” Hardin says. “Colors are part of it. When you have any fresh produce, it makes it easy. The salad was bright, vibrant, and reflects summer.” Then there are theatrical flourishes, as seen in chef Paul Ferzacca’s barbecued oysters at La Tour Restaurant and Bar in Vail.
Panna Cotta Kiss pastry chef Jackie Johns at Plato’s Restaurant at Aspen Meadows.
A black Japanese-style tabletop ceramic grill arrives, oysters set on a grate over a dish of ashy charcoal briquettes. The breadcrumbtopped beauties bubble and steam, which they probably wouldn’t if they were placed on a platter. I sampled them one random afternoon last fall while on assignment for another magazine, and they’re still the first things I recommend when someone asks me about dining in that town. I also can’t forget the way Ferzacca plated his scallops: one on each end of a skewer, balanced asymmetrically on a stack of lettuce, jicama, and orange as if one of Alexander Calder’s orb-and-rod floating mobiles in food form. A key comment I heard in March when watching the Aspen ProStart Culinary Team preparing for competition was to build height on the plate, as judges — and diners, presumably — favor tall, dramatic presentation. So the students placed lamb chops and vegetables in teepee formation. “When I’m in a restaurant, the moment the plate I’ve ordered is
in front of me, I’ve already judged the presentation without even knowing it,” says Danielle Riesz, executive pastry chef at The Little Nell. “Appearance is everything, and so is taste. If it’s an ugly plate, dirty, or I can tell something isn’t cooked correctly, I immediately don’t like it.” When designing desserts to serve at element47, Riesz considers taste, as well as colors, textures, height, and overall appearance. She composes sweet tableaux with a calligrapher’s precision but credits impressionist artists — Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Gustav Klimt — as inspiration. “Having an artistic and creative mind is key for all pastry chefs in order to create modern plated desserts, designing cakes, and coming up with desserts on the fly,” Riesz says. “You only have one chance to give a good impression.” Amanda Rae will celebrate her 50th Food Matters column with at least one of the desserts pictured here. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

cool, layered colors. What I can tell you is that I’ve found an adult version of the rocket pop — and I know both the name and the reason I like it. First, and just in time for the Fourth of July, this cocktail’s called the “Stars and Stripes Shooter.” And while it’s layered like a rocket pop, you down it in one gulp, which makes the flavors of the three liquors blend together nicely. It’s a bit sweet, but has enough spark to give your holiday barbecue a boost. And if you’re the one pouring, take note: the key to successfully layering a shot like this is to slowly pour the ingredients over a bar spoon in the right order (which is based on the density of the liquid). Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times Publisher Gunilla Asher, who died June 2 after a brave battle with cancer. Gunilla wrote her column without any real training, other than in the spirit of “she is not a connoisseur, but she is heavily practiced.” We intend to carry on the crusade in her memory, so email jmcgovern@aspentimes.com with what cocktails you’re mixing, what libations you’re drinking and what tastes have tempted your tastebuds, and we’ll share them with our readers. Cheers — to Gunner!

One way to break out of the Aspen Bubble: a visit to the Aspen Ideas Fest.
BRAIN GAMES
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ASPEN’S INTELLECTUAL ATMOSPHERE AARON SORKIN didn’t show up. I’d been counting down the days when I would have the opportunity to hear one of my favorite writers speak on one of my favorite subjects: writing. But the morning of his debut, he had a family emergency and canceled the engagement. A few days have passed and I’m still sorely disappointed BARBARA PLATTS that Sorkin could not attend the Ideas Festival. But I can’t help but feel fortunate that I even got to complain about such a situation. We live in an area of the country that is technically classified as rural America and for the past month, the world has been coming to us. From the greatest chefs and wine connoisseurs to brilliant politicians and talented musicians, we have the chance to get up close and personal with many brilliant individuals. We get opportunities that people who live in New York or Los Angeles their whole lives may never have. And my day had been ruined because I didn’t get to see Katie Couric interview Aaron Sorkin?

Sorry…I guess my diamond shoes have gotten a bit too tight. Last year, I was out of town for most of the Ideas Festival so I wasn’t able to take advantage of the scene. This year, at the advice of a friend, I made sure I was in town for this thought-provoking week. I felt like I’d found a hidden gem of intellect in my backyard. Although I was familiar with the
was even fortunate to hear Hillary Clinton speak in our very own music tent. Friends from college have always been confused by my fascination with Aspen. They ask questions like, “How long are you going to be there anyway?” or “Doesn’t it get boring?” Their impression is that people in small communities must run out of things to do. It’s hard to explain just
I FELT LIKE I’D FOUND A HIDDEN GEM OF INTELLECT IN MY BACKYARD. ALTHOUGH I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE INSTITUTE I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO ENGROSS MYSELF IN THE WONDERFUL CHAOS OF THE ASPEN IDEAS FESTIVAL. I WAS A LITTLE KID IN A CANDY STORE AGAIN. Aspen Institute I didn’t understand what it was like to engross myself in the wonderful chaos of the Aspen Ideas Festival. I was a little kid in a candy store again. I saw tear-inducing documentaries on growing old and the nursing home system in our country. I heard Kathleen Sebelius speak on the malicious terrain in Washington and Beau Willimon discuss just how easily an individual’s morals can slip away. I
how wrong that initial impression is when it comes to Aspen. We don’t have enough hours in the day to experience even half of what this town has to offer. But does my generation take advantage of it? My initial reaction, when I looked around the Aspen Institute’s campus, was no. Most of the festival attendees appeared to be much older. The Millennials, while somewhat present, were not all accounted for. Perhaps that’s
because of the steep price of the festival (an average ticket costs $2,800, though tickets for individual public events are available). Or maybe it’s because the topics aren’t particularly sexy (examples: the discussion on how we’re going to feed Earth’s overgrowing population or dealing with dementia in old age). Or possibly, for many of us, we feel uncomfortable when the walls of the Roaring Fork Valley are broken down with discussions such as world hunger and climate change. We prefer vacation-style living. I have certainly been at fault for this. There are days when I forget to read the news entirely because I am preoccupied in my Aspen Bubble. Life moves fast here, and it’s easy to forget what lies outside of this community sometimes. We must try, however, to burst that bubble whenever possible. If we don’t, we will never appreciate all of the hidden gems that our bubble has to offer. Barbara Platts will continue to obsessively watch West Wing and News Room despite her recent disappointment. She can be reached at bplatts.000@gmail.com or follow her on Twitter @BarbaraPlatts.

VOYAGES
ESCAPE ARTIST | BORDEAUX WINE FESTIVAL
by AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY
TASTING NOTES: BORDEAUX WINE FESTIVAL
BORDEAUX, LIKE ASPEN, lacks for little in the way of name recognition, but it does sometime suffer from an image problem. But like most assumptions, Bordeaux’s reputation as uptight, snobby and like Paris without the culture, is unfounded, I recently discovered. Full of vibrancy, young people and new districts for shopping and dining, AMIEE WHITE Bordeaux is also home BEAZLEY to some of the worlds’ best — and surprisingly, perfectly affordable — wines. At the end of June, Bordeaux Fete le Vin (Bordeaux Wine Festival) took place along the Garonne River. Held every two years, the festival features close to 1,000 local vintners, as well as food, art and music, and attracts more than 500,000 people to this historic shipping and trade city. Already famous for its red wine, Bordeaux has a new generation of young winemakers who are changing the way many view Bordeaux as a wine — and as a destination for wine lovers. At the festival, I walked the tents, talked to producers and discovered a
few surprising Bordeaux wine facts: • Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Muscadelle grapes all got their start in Bordeaux. Over hundreds of years, “these grapes are perfectly suiting natural conditions of climate and soils and then have been selected and isolated. They are local grapes, born here and perfect to be grown here. They have been planted everywhere on the planet afterwards. Some places are wonderful to grow these grapes outside France, but Merlot, for instance, is very complicated to get it right and delicate (same as PinotNoir originated from Burgundy). Its fruit aspect and acidity are fragile to keep intact. Cabernet Sauvignon can handle more climatic extremes, which is why it is much more planted in the world, and it works,” says Thomas Le Grix de La Salle, a 36-year-old, seventh-generation winemaker of Château Le Grand Verdus wines, located in the heart of the Bordeaux Supérieur AOC. • Grapes are particularly wellsuited to the region because of the terroir, which includes the growing climate effects on the quality of the tannins. “We are onto the
45th parallel,” says Le Grix de La Salle. “Here there is a balance of temperatures, the climate is dry most of the year, but we get enough rainfall, the impact from the Gulf Stream and the Atlantic Ocean are very important, and the growing season is quite long. This is a key for refined tannins in our reds.” • What are known as “Bordeauxstyle wines” really mean “blended wine” because this is where it started. “Our single varietal wines should be blended together,” says Le Grix de La Salle. “They are very complementary to one another (fruit, tannins, body, aftertaste, etc.) and make more elegant and complex wines when blended.” The typical Bordeaux red is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (although Le Grix de La Salle and others also use a lot of Cabernet Franc). • Bordeaux is famous for its red wine, but 8 percent of the regional producing is in dry white totaling 63 million bottles. White wines in Bordeaux were once even more common than red wines, until the 1970s. White Bordeaux — where much of the excitement for drinkers of wine with quality and
accessibility currently lies today — is commonly a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon (sometimes with Muscadelle in smaller quantities.” • Bordeaux is also the second largest French producer of dry Rosé behind Provence: “Looking at production figures, this is a secret no one knows” says Le Grix de La Salle of the region’s Rosé production. Bordeaux also makes its own style of Rosé called Clairet. It is a darker, more tannic style of Rosé thanks to the pressing of grapes and two days of maceration before bleeding the juice from the tank. But, the direction to lighter colored Bordeaux Rosé (no maceration for a lighter color) is gaining more traction thanks to its global popularity as a refined, elegant wine, with a fresher style and easy to drink. Amiee White Beazley writes about travel for the Aspen Times Weekly. Reach her at awb@awbeazley.com or follow her @awbeazley1.
Says winemaker Thomas Le Grix de La Salle of Bordeaux: “We are onto the 45th parallel. Here there is a balance of temperatures, the climate is dry most of the year, but we get enough rainfall, the impact from the Gulf Stream and the Atlantic Ocean are very important, and the growing season is quite long.”

YOU’RE HERE IN ASPEN. WE’RE HERE IN ASPEN. SO, CLEARLY, WE HAVE AT LEAST ONE THING IN COMMON: WE LOVE ASPEN. So do a lot of people, apparently. In fact, Aspen is one of the “Best Places to Visit in the USA,” according to new vacation-destination rankings for 2014-15 by U.S. News and World Report. But the rankings put Aspen in the No. 20 spot on the top-20 list. We beg to differ. We think Aspen is No. 1. Here are 20 reasons why — beginning with five must-do summer activities, followed up by a list of our favorite things.
THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR favorite THIN GS compi le d by JE AN NE M CG OV ER N
FESTIVALS, FESTIVALS, FESTIVALS We can’t think of another place with more summertime festivals than Aspen. Beginning with the Mammoth Fest in mid-June and wrapping up with Filmfest in late September, there is a festival just about every week in summer. Aspen Fringe Festival, Aspen Ideas Festival, Mac and Cheese Festival, Jazz Aspen Labor Day Festival — this is just the tip of the iceberg... you get the picture.
THE SOUNDS OF SUMMER The hills around Aspen are most certainly alive with the sound of music. From the Benedict Music Tent to Fanny Hill in Snowmass to Bluegrass Sundays atop Ajax, and from Belly Up Aspen to the JAS Cafe at the Little Nell to students playing for pennies on the downtown pedestrian malls, our small town plays host to musical acts of all types. Really, where else can you find classical, jazz, rock, bluegrass and more — all in one day? And if one day isn’t enough, remember this: several of Aspen’s musical offerings are weeks-long (Aspen Music Festival), ongoing (free Thursday night concerts in Snowmass), and weekend affairs (Jazz Aspen Labor Festival). So really, what more can a music-loving local or visitor — or even just the casual music fan — want in a town? Not much, in our humble opinion. Happy listening...enjoy the sounds of summer.

EAT, DRINK (AND BE MERRY) For a small town, Aspen is home to some serious Big City eats and drinks. It all begins with the Food & Wine Classic, and it trickles down to the daily grind. From fine dining and bustling nightlife to family fare and picnic baskets, Aspen in summer has something for everyone when it comes to food and drink. Our suggestion: walk the downtown core and stop — often — to see what delights await. For example, a one block loop around the dancing fountain on Hyman Avenue offers more than two dozen options, serving up everything sushi and suds to pastas and Pinots. An added bonus in summer: most restaurants and bars have outdoor seating, which means you can eat, drink, see and be seen.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS When it comes right down to it, what Aspenites love most about summer in Aspen is what actually surrounds the town of Aspen: the great outdoors. Nestled in eastern edge of the Roaring Fork Valley — a dead-end in winter — Aspen in summer is flanked by all that Mother Nature has to offer. Hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, camping, climbing, golfing...the list goes on and on. Our advice to enjoying all that the area has to offer? Grab a map and go. A few favorites, by sport: hike the Lost Man Loop up Independence Pass; mountain bike through the Hunter Creek Valley or road bike to the Maroon Bells; fish the Gold Medal waters of the Frying Pan; paddle the Roaring Fork River; camp at Difficult; climb up Independence Pass; golf the Aspen municipal course. And this is just the start. Truly, no one person could explore every nook and cranny of our diverse town and the surrounding backcountry. But that hasn’t stopped us from trying — and it shouldn’t stop you. Head to a local outfitter or sporting goods shop to get the lowdown on how to the explore and enjoy the area safely, and then get out there. You won’t be sorry...we never are after a day in the great outdoors.
ROAD TRIP Yes, this is a story about Aspen in summer. And how great Aspen in summer can be. But really, what adventure would be complete without a great road trip. None. So for those of us who toil in town day in and day out, the thought of a road trip makes us appreciate the fact we get to come home to Aspen even more. A few of our favorites, all within a two-hour drive: Ruedi Reservoir, up the Frying Pan past Basalt, for some boating, fishing, stand-up paddling boarding and more; Redstone/Marble, for a true small-town experience in a quaint mountain setting; the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, for thrills and chills on the roller-coaster rides and a look into our deep past in the onsite caverns; and Leadville, over Independence Pass, for a taste of the Old West (especially if you happen to hit it over Boom Days, the town’s annual celebration of all that is Leadville).

My favorite summertime activity in Aspen? Three words: Lincoln Creek Road. It’s burly, big and beautiful. The road is not for the undented vehicle set, but for those with basic 4WD clearance, a magic wonderland of mountain beauty awaits. Corby Anderson, “On The Hill” host
Well, I love to hike — American Lake, doing the Hunter Creek loop. The July 4th parade is great, family fun. I love Jazz Fest and the activities at the top of Aspen Mountain. Ashton Hewitt, adverting rep Just being outdoors. Hiking, biking, camping in the surrounding backcountry; eating, drinking, people-watching anywhere downtown; playing with my kids, barbecuing with friends, walking the dog. It’s all good, as long as your outdoors enjoying the Aspen summer. Jeanne McGovern, Aspen Times Weekly editor
Hike Ajax to the Sundeck, have cocktails up there and ride the gondola down. And the awesome part is that you can take your pets for free. And downloading is free. The only thing that costs are the cocktails. And if you can’t hike, it’s still a pretty sweet view from the top and the drinks are still good. Samantha Johnston, general manager Tuesday Cruiseday Jill Beathard, Snowmass Sun editor
Eat oysters at Pacifica (now Jimmy’s Bodega). Tim Kurnos, advertising rep
Finding the perfect time for a mountain bike ride when the trails have dried off but the wildflowers are in full bloom. It typically falls around the third and fourth week of June. The trails haven’t been pounded into dust yet and there is enough moisture in the ground to fuel an explosion of colors. Scott Condon, reporter
All the great biking trails. Road biking to the Maroon Bells and Ashcroft to mountain biking Government, Hunter Creek and Sky Mountain Park. Maria Wimmer, circulation manager
Jump in the Punch Bowl. Andrew Travers, arts & entertainment editor
Camping is amazing in the summer. So many campgrounds close by and also plenty of great backpacking trips to be had. So go get after it. Billy Gross, adverting rep
Being a dad of two little girls, I immensely enjoy watching them prance around the dancing fountain in the Mill Street mall. Usually they wear their bathing suits, but sometimes not. Cheap thrills for all, to say the least. Rick Carroll, Aspen Times editor
Late afternoon float down the Roaring Fork through the North Star Preserve. Put in near the Wildwood School and get out at the bridge on the west end of the preserve. Pristine landscape and lots of wildlife. David Laughren, advertising manager My favorite, favorite summer thing to do in Aspen is take an early morning bicycle ride to Ashcroft (or Maroon Bells), and then enjoy lunch on the mall from Annette’s Mountain Bake Shop. Dale Strode, sports editor Being outside — outdoor dining, hiking the ski mountains to see them in summer. Rose Laudicina, copy editor
Aspen has more than its share of beautiful people. I really enjoy sitting outdoors in the early evening with good company and an adult beverage while taking in the scenery — wild and domestic. Michael McLaughlin, reporter

HIGH ROAD TO ASPEN THE INDEPENDENCE Pass Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary recently with a booksigning party and talk by David Hiser and Paul Andersen, who have produced the new book “High Road to Aspen.” The credits for the book read: ”Written by Paul Andersen, photographed by MARY ESHBAUGH David Hiser, designed HAYES by Curt Carpenter and made possible by Michael Stranahan.” The Independence Pass Foundation was founded 25 years ago by environmentalist Bob Lewis, who saw the destruction to the Pass caused by the road cuts and spent the rest of his life doing his best to bring the area back to its natural beauty. The book is for sale at local shops and members of the IPF are also selling it at their booth at the Aspen Saturday Market. Undercurrent... ARCHITECTURE IN MOTION “NO OTHER DANCE company looks like Diavolo,” says Aspen Santa Fe Ballet executive director JeanPhilippe Malaty. Diavolo, an innovative Los Angelesbased dance company, opens a busy summer season at Aspen Santa Fe with performances July 5 and 6. The company was founded by Jacques Heim — who has also choreographed works for Cirque du Soleil — and combines contemporary dance with acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts and hip-hop. This summer’s local Diavolo shows mark the company’s third stop in Aspen, where its athletic performances have made it a popular attraction. Diavolo’s pieces have incorporated the use of skateboard half-pipes, rock-climbing walls and other unique dance props. Heim has characterized Diavolo as “architecture in motion,” due to its creative use of structures to complement its choreography. “People in Aspen can really relate to it,” says Malaty. “It’s almost like physical theater.” Diavolo’s Independence Day weekend in Aspen features two evening programs and one for kids. Two weeks later, Aspen Santa Fe’s dancers stage their only local performance of the summer, with encore presentations of Norbert de la Cruz’s “Square None,” Jiri Kylian’s “Return to a Strange Land” and Nicolo Fonte’s “The Heart(s)pace,” which debuted during the winter season. On July 22 and Aug. 5, Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe performs a program of the traditional Spanish dance. Local audiences will likely be seeing more of Siddi and his 13 dancers in coming Aspen Santa Fe seasons. The local nonprofit dance company this spring took over management of the six-year-old Santa Fe-based flamenco troupe. Malaty says the burgeoning dance company reminded him of Aspen Santa Fe in its early years. Now in its 18th season, Aspen Santa Fe has grown into a nationally renowned touring company, as well as a local treasure. With Juan Siddi operating under its umbrealla, Aspen Santa Fe will assist the young flamenco

Folklorico program. Aspen Santa Fe and Batoto Yetu collaborated here last summer, bringing together Bototo Yetu’s traditional African dance with the dance heritage of Mexico that Folklorico helps preserve in the Roaring Fork Valley. The two children’s programs will give a joint performance on July 26. On Aug. 8, New York City Ballet principal dancer Daniel Ulbricht leads an ensemble of acclaimed performers in a program titled “Stars of American Ballet.” The one-night program is nearly sold-out already, Malaty said, and brings to Aspen a combination of classical and contemporary pieces from the likes of George Balanchine and Christopher Wheeldon. The
evening’s presentation of Gerald Arpino’s “Light Rain” will include dancers from Aspen Santa Fe alongside the guest artists. The summer season closes Aug. 16 with the return of Ballet West. The Salt Lake City company was among the first dance organizations in the mountain west. Longtime locals will recall their performances here in school gymnasiums during the 1970, while young people may recognize Ballet West from the CW reality TV show “Breaking Pointe.” Malaty calls the local performance “a tribute to the origins of ballet in Aspen.” Ballet West’s show includes pieces by Balanchine, Fonte and Jodie Gates.

MONT
Brother Charlie and sister Peaches are both sweet, seven-year-old, Golden Retriever/ Border Collie mix who are wonderful with people and other dogs. They were released to the shelter together. We would prefer to keep them together, but we are willing to separate them if we have to. Their long-time owner very reluctantly turned them in due to unforeseen circumstances. These are really great, nice dogs who deserve another good home! You won’t regret it :).

Participating entities in the land exchange include 2343 County Road, LLC; Prince Creek Crown, LLC; and Lady Belle Partnership, LLLP. The proposed exchange would convey six parcels of Federal lands in Pitkin and Eagle Counties, aggregating 1470.01 acres, to acquire two parcels of non-Federal lands totaling 433.03 acres located in Garfield and Pitkin Counties. The Federal lands located in Eagle and Pitkin Counties, are isolated from other Federal lands, and are difficult and uneconomic for the BLM to manage. The exchange will consolidate ownership and improve the efficiency and management by the Bureau of Land Management. In exchange, the United States will acquire a portion of the Sutey Ranch in Garfield County and a parcel in the area of The Crown in Pitkin County. Both parcels are accessible by county roads. The United States will acquire the Sutey Ranch parcel in fee, subject to existing rights-of-way. The United States will acquire surface only in the West Crown parcel as the Federal patent reserved all minerals. The parcel will be subject to a right-of-way for Prince Creek Road and any valid existing rights. The encumbrances will not interfere with future management objectives for the parcels and are acceptable to the United States. Upon completion of the proposed land exchange, the proponents will grant conservation easements on Federal parcels A and B to the Aspen Valley Land Trust and conservation easements on Parcels C, D, and E to the Eagle Valley Land Trust. The Department of Interior's Office of Valuation Services (OVS) approved appraisals for the Federal and non-Federal lands. Appraisal of the exchange lands determined the value of the nonFederal lands to be substantially higher than the value of the Federal lands. A supplemental appraisal of Parcel 1 in August 2013 separated the Sutey Ranch into two tracts, Parcel 1A will to remain as the exchange parcel. The Proponents offered to donate Parcel 1B to the United States under a separate transaction pursuant to Section 205 of the FLPMA. The OVS approved the values for Parcels 1A and 1B on August 26, 2013 The BLM evaluated the impacts associated with the exchange and addressed them in an Environmental Assessment prepared for the land e x c h a n g e a n d d o n a t i o n , DOI-BLM-CO-040-2013-0061-EA (EA). The exchange and donation will increase land management efficiency, especially for protection and enhancement of wildlife and recreation resources. The non-Federal parcels include water and riparian resources. The exchange will well serve the public interest. Interested parties may obtain a copy of the EA and the decision to approve the exchange and donation from the Colorado River Valley Field Office at the above address, on-line at www.blm.gov/co/crvfo, or by contacting Monte Senor at (970) 876-9067. Interested parties may submit a written protest to Steve Bennett, Field Manager, Colorado River Valley Field Office, at the above address through Aug. 4, 2014 (45 days from the date of first publication of this notice). Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your protest, you should be aware that the BLM may make your entire comment - including your personal identifying information - publicly available at any time. While you may include in your comment a request for the BLM to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. BOOK REVIEW
NOTEWORTHY
‘CALAMITY JANE’ AFTER TWO DECADES of silence, former mystery writer Bernard Schopen is back with “Calamity Jane,” a new novel that asks serious questions about the West. His protagonist, independent filmmaker Jane Harmon, returns triumphantly from Hollywood to Blue Lake, Nev., to showcase The Last Roundup, a documentary she’s made about the townspeople’s lives. Jane’s received “bouquets of encomium and accolades for her assessment of the rural West and the American desert, of what should be done in it and who should do it.” The Last Roundup has even aired on PBS. Winnifred Westrom Warner, the book’s narrator, is a former schoolmarm and closet poet who reassembles the story of Jane’s one-year sojourn in Blue Lake and tries to come to terms with this modern-day Calamity Jane (as the locals call her) who’s wreaked havoc

on their lives at every turn. Winnifred has sympathy for the realities that Jane’s film portrays, but also “feels it’s at odds with (her own) sense of things.” After all, Jane arrived with “ideas and attitudes shaped by Out There teachers. … She took us in, made us material to be worked by her art and didn’t recognize us otherwise.” This emotional flaw keeps Jane from penetrating or even recognizing the barrier that stands between her viewpoint and the town’s. Jane’s larger-than-life stories of two characters — Brock Walden, a DonJuan-of-the-West TV star who owns a local ranch, and Ione Hardaway, the pistol-packing manager of Walden’s livestock operation — miss the hidden details that don’t fit into her wellcrafted narrative: the stuff of ordinary rural people who ain’t tellin’ their secrets to nobody. “Out There,” the sensibility that

shaped Jane’s version of the Wild West, collides with “Out Here,” the authentic Real West represented by the town. Schopen has taken a wise, smartly written, complex look at the everyday mysteries to be found, and perhaps solved, in a group of human beings with various passions, Achilles’ heels and a near-addiction to small-town gossip, which is often flavored with the truth. Can Jane, with her limited awareness of other people’s inner lives, ever understand what this land means to those trying to wring a livelihood from it? Or will she always be an outsider, bending the truth to fit her own myth?
