25 COVER STORY The Aspen Ideas Fest brought plenty of high-minded people with lofty agendas to town. But it also brought those of a different, more creative stripe. Among them was JR and his “Inside Out Project.” Arts Editor Andrew Travers shadowed JR for the week, and the story he shares — and the photos that were captured — paint a captivating picture.

CORRECTION In last week’s WineInk, Fletcher Jones was identified as a Southern California automotive dealer. In fact, the Fletcher R.Jones who resided for a time in Happy Canyon before his death in a plane crash was a technology entrepreneur who founded the Computer Sciences Corporation.

“Bruce Nauman, The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths, 1967. ... I think it strikes me because it’s true, revealing, simple; it teaches, and is so general.”

“I’d have to say the signature design of Hoorsenbuhs. It’s a jewelry company, named after an old battleship. ... It’s striking to me because it’s clean, fresh, modern, but still edgy. And it’s unique — not everybody is wearing it.”

GEORGE JACKSON LONDON

“It’s a bit crazy, but it was in Hamburg, Germany, at Kampnagel. It’s this old factory full of blackbox theaters...there was a topless girl ironing pieces of salami...and a guy playing air guitar, throwing plates at the topless girl. ... THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

with JOHN COLSON

Call to action on ‘community rights’ READERS MIGHT RECALL that last year voters in Colorado were robbed of their chance to cast a ballot either in favor of or against the idea of giving communities greater local control over such things as hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells within or close to their community boundaries. The robbers were, in fact, Colorado politicians, led by Gov. John Hickenlooper and U.S. Congressman Jared Polis of Boulder, both Democrats who had proclaimed their interest in protecting Colorado’s citizens from the worst effects of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” Fracking, of course, is a controversial method of exploiting deeply buried oil and gas reserves up to the surface by injecting massive amounts of water and sand into the earth and breaking up the tightly packed formations where the reserves have long been locked up, which is increasingly suspected of fouling the water and air anywhere near the drilling sites. We can debate until the cows come home about the propriety of the actions by Polis and Hickenlooper, in which the two pols bargained away a community’s right to control corporate activities within its boundaries, in favor of setting up a winning electoral strategy to keep the governor’s job and at least part of the legislature in Democratic hands. But that’s all in the past, and now we’re looking at the future, right? Right. And that future, at least for now, includes a new effort to assert the rights of communities to determine their own destiny when it comes to who will drill into the earth within a community’s boundaries, or commit other corporate acts not deemed beneficial to the communities in question. That effort, known as the Colorado Community Rights Amendment, is the subject of an ongoing organizational campaign by a group known as the Colorado Community Rights Network, or CoCRN. It is CoCRN’s goal to get an initiative on the 2016 ballot that guarantees a community’s right to determine what corporations can do within the community’s boundaries, which would be a reversal of current law that puts corporate rights above those of individual citizens, according to a column written in the Colorado Statesman a year ago by attorney activist Thomas Alan Linzey. Linzey, like other activists, was not happy about the Polis/Hickenlooper deal, nor about the special Task Force or “stakeholder group” set up by the governor as part of the deal, which came up with rules that were supposed to better control fracking and its effects on the environment and public health. Pointing out that the Task Force was controlled from the beginning by oil and

gas corporations, Linzey wrote last August, “Any follower of politics knows that convening a stakeholder group is the equivalent of the U.S. Congress announcing a blue ribbon study commission. It’s a perfect recipe for making sure nothing happens.” Which, in fact, is exactly what did happen. Or didn’t, if you get my meaning. Because the Task Force recommendations were widely condemned as being too little, too late, and largely ineffective because the Task Force failed to establish a way to enforce the new rules, weak as they are. The CoCRN and its petition drive are meant to fix the deficiencies left behind by the political shenanigans of Polis and Hickenlooper, by clearly outlining the rights of communities and the people in them as having primacy over the rights of corporations. Although initiated as a response to the lack of controls on the oil and gas industry, with particular attention to fracking, the amendment’s provisions are broader than that. They would give communities the right to set limits and controls on the activities of any corporation doing business within the community’s boundaries. That’s right. Any corporation. The CoCRN, I should note, is part of something called the National Community Rights Network, and in fact the head of CoCRN, Clifford Willmeng of Lafayette, was last year picked as the first president of the network. And the National Community Rights Network itself is an outgrowth of work by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, a national organization that has drafted “community bills of rights” that as of late 2014 had been adopted by 160 communities across the country. So what’s been happening in Colorado, obviously, has not been a lonely cry in the wilderness of corporate hegemony. Rather, it’s been part of a nationwide movement to wrench control of this country back from corporations and put it where it belongs, in the hands of flesh-and-blood people. Because contrary to the corporate line, corporations are not people and must not be permitted to run this country as they see fit. And you don’t have to take my word for any of this. Read about it at www.celdf.org, or at www.cocrn.org. Or read about the Polis/ Hickenlooper sellout in the Aug. 8, 2014 edition of the Colorado Statesman (www. coloradostatesman.com) or the Oct. 2, 2014 edition of Boulder Weekly, in an article titled “Who Killed the Vote On Fracking?” (www.boulderweekly.com). Read about it, freak out for a bit, then get mad and do something about it.

POPULAR MUSIC IT’S BEEN A GOOD SUMMER for seeing folk and rock legends at Belly Up Aspen, with early summer shows from Gregg Allman, Gordon Lightfoot and the incredible new collaboration between Ricky Skaggs, Ry Cooder and Sharon White. Next up on the docket is singer-songwriter John Prine, who plays the club on Friday, July 10. Prine, the genius behind timeless songs like “Angel From Montgomery” and “In Spite of Ourselves,” along with seminal ’60s anthems like “Sam Stone” and “You Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore,” has been a regular at Belly Up over the last 10 years. At age 68, he’s contented to deliver memorable shows that mix his extensive catalog from the last five decades with new songs from albums like 2011’s “Singing Mailman Delivers.” The two-disc archival release featured the earliest studio and live recordings from Prine dating back to 1970, a year before his influential, selftitled debut album. In recent years, Prine has beaten oral and lung cancer, treatment of which has deepened the timbre of his voice from its 1970s twang but not affected his ability to write and perform at the highest level. The show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. with Jason Wilber opening. Tickets for the show run $85 to $185 and are available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com.

Singer-songwriter John Prine will perform on Friday, July 10 at Belly Up Aspen.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

To promote Aspen, Ski Club members drove guests to a tour of the Midnight Mine.

HOLLYWOOD STAR VISITS ASPEN The 1936 Olympics spurred interest in alpine skiing, and it

became the chic sport in Hollywood. Railroad magnate Averrell Harriman enticed stars such as Norma Shearer, Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert to his Sun Valley resort. Nothing sparked interest in skiing as strongly as did star power, especially when Sun Valley ski scenes appeared in movies. Walt Disney put up money to develop Sugar Bowl in California and stars flocked there too. Aspen’s Highland Bavarian investors were well aware of star power. So, Ed Flynn and Billy Fiske — the two partners in Los Angeles — sought out stars they could introduce to their Aspen endeavor. Flynn talked comedic film star Jack Oakie into joining him for a one-week vacation in October 1941. Both Oakie and his wife were avid skiers. The Aspen Ski Club had just hosted the national alpine ski championships on Aspen Mountain. They were looking for ways to build on that buzz, despite American focus shifting to the war. Flynn brought Oakie and Edward Burton, the chief engineer of Douglas Aircraft, to the Highland Bavarian Lodge below Little Annie Basin on Castle Creek. The Ski Club pitched in to entertain them. The Lions Club sponsored a banquet that Laurence Elisha, the owner, put on at the Jerome. Oakie cracked jokes, and Aspen fell in love with him. They

already knew him from his movies — he starred in one nearly every year from 1934 on — yet the real Oakie was

the top of Little Annie Basin to admire the view and to see the slopes that Flynn promoted at the time. Then

ASKED WHEN THEY LEFT WHAT THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THEIR TRIP HAD BEEN, OAKIE IMMEDIATELY NAMED THE MIDNIGHT TOUR AND SILVER SAMPLE. HE ALSO SAID HE LOVED THE INFORMAL DINNER AND ENJOYED NOT BEING HOUNDED BY AUTOGRAPH SEEKERS. SKI CLUB MEMBERS’ HOSPITALITY, HONED DURING SEVERAL YEARS OF PROMOTING ASPEN SKIING, WORKED ON OAKIE. HE LEFT SAYING HE WOULD RETURN IN JANUARY WITH HOLLYWOOD FRIENDS. much more impressive. Ski club member Mike Magnifico provided a spaghetti dinner at the Highland Bavarian for local men. During the dinner my father invited Oakie and Burton to tour the Midnight Mine. The next day Father drove them to

he took them underground in the Midnight. He wrapped up the tour with a gift chunk of silver ore. Burton was one grateful rock collector. The last day of their visit, Laurence Elisha asked Burton to advise the Lions Club about the best location for an airport, a high-priority project. They

drove up and down both sides of the valley and Burton picked the current location of Sardy Field for the airport.

Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@ comcast.net.

FROM THE ARTIST ’S EYE

1918 ASPEN

THE ASPEN DEMOCRAT-TIMES ran an article about Aspen’s “artist in residence” on Sept. 9, 1918. According to the paper, “A.L. Tice, an eastern artist, has taken up his abode at Warren’s Lake on the summit of Smuggler Mt., where he can see the tops of the surrounding mountains and get the colors of nature that are so hard to transfer to canvas. He is combining his artistic work with that of looking after the fish in the lake and occasionally makes up a shipment for eastern people. Mr. Tice is enthusiastic over the scenery in this locality and will shortly be joined by his son, R.T. Tice, who is also an artist. Mr. Tice is of the opinion that when his son arrives they will decide to take up their permanent residence here and be joined by Mrs. Tice. Stay here, Brother Tice. We have room and a welcome for all worthwhile people.” This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org.

GEAR of the WEEK

RIDE ON: KID BIKES

AT AGE 2 MY SON LEVI IS ALREADY PINING to ride with his bigger siblings. He hopped on the push-bikes we gave him just a few weeks after learning to walk. Now he’s a tiny speed demon on the sidewalks, with scraped-up knees and a smile to prove it. This spring my wife and I upgraded Levi’s fleet with two new models. The first, made by Yuba Bicycles, has a rear rack and tiny panniers where he keeps some toys. It’s called the Flip Flop. Its frame is made to “grow” with your kid, as its seat post adjusts and the top tube flips around to add height to the frame. Munchkin-size Levi rides the Yuba in its lowest setting for now. The company says the balance trainer bike, which has no pedals, can be used by children up to age 6.

With no drivetrain or brakes, kids run and push off to roll down the driveway. Levi jogs a bit then tucks his legs up, balancing on two wheels and coasting ahead. The Flip Flop has an aluminum frame and foamfilled tires that cannot pop. It weighs about 7 pounds, which is manageable even by a 2-year-old. Yuba (www.yubabikes.com) sells the push-bike for $149. I recommend this kind of bike for little ones looking to learn balance on a bike without the added challenge of pedals and brakes, which can wait until they are a bit bigger. A second tiny bike we tested comes from a New Zealand company called Wishbone Design. Like the Yuba, it converts to a couple different configurations for girls and

boys of varying sizes and abilities. The frame of the Wishbone bike adjusts up and down via a hinged midpoint. Loosen a bolt and the frame can be raised and lowered to fit tiny kids up to those heading toward Kindergarten. It also transforms from a trike to a two-wheeler, making it usable for the littlest of riders. Wishbone notes children as young as 12 months are a fit for the no-balance-required trike. We set it up for Levi in the three-wheel configuration and turned him loose. The bike is called the Recycled Edition because its frame is made of a plastic that is up-cycled from old carpeting. The result is a dense, smooth material that feels almost like wood. The bike has 12-inch

inflatable tires, which are nice for air-pressure adjustability. In trike mode the ride weighs around 13 pounds, making it heavy for tiny kids, especially on hills. On the go, rolling on flat ground, the weight doesn’t matter. The Wishbone was a smooth and fun ride for Levi. One caveat: At times, in the trike setup, Levi would let his feet drag behind, and the wide axles of the Wishbone would roll up onto his shoe. He learned after a few times to keep his feet running and engaged. (Raising the seat will also help eliminate the axle issue.) Wishbone has built a durable bike, with materials and a finished look and feel that is of a higher quality than most tike offerings. Its adjustability and 66-pound weight limit makes it good for the long haul with a little one, too. You pay a bit more for the upgrade. The Wishbone Recycled Edition goes at $229 from www.wishbonedesign. com. Worth it for a kid looking to rip from age 1 and onward down the sidewalk. WINEINK

THE MAGIC OF MAPS THERE IS A PHRASE IN BASEBALL: “You can’t tell the players without a scorecard.” Well in wine, the parallel for a scorecard may well be the map. Of all of the “ologies” and “ographies” that make up the world of wine, geography is perhaps the most important. Wine is of a place and to know a place, one needs a map. A scorecard if you will. KELLY J. HAYES In writing this column not a week goes by where I am not examining some form of cartography. In a recent story about the wines of Westerly and the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara appellation, a key component was the unique geographical quirk that allows the Santa Barbara wine regions to be influenced by the cooling of the Pacific, a result of the valleys on that patch of land running from west to east. It is a defining characteristic that is most easily understood by a simple glance at a map of the region. If you have done any wine touring you know the value of having a good map. A look at a Napa Valley winery map will show you that the Silverado Trail runs up the east side of the valley and Highway 29 up the west, and that between Yountville to Calistoga there are a dozen crossroads that can get you from one side to the other. There you have it. A quick overview of the entire 30-mile by 5-mile Napa Valley at a glance. Knowledge is power. I can remember talking to Master Sommelier Jay Fletcher about how he became an expert in the wines of Bordeaux despite having had never set pied in France. “I studied maps like you can’t believe,” he told me. “I could tell you where each Chatêau was and which way the rivers ran. I knew it better than I knew Aspen.” My go-to for wine maps is the excellent “The World Atlas of Wine” by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. I have the sixth edition published in 2007, though the most recent edition, published by Mitchell Beazley in 2013, is naturally a little more au

Under the Influence: Wines for the Dead.

courante. While the descriptions by Johnson/Robinson are incredibly informative, it is the regional wine maps that are indispensable. If there is a need to know about the “terra rossa” of Coonawarra I can simply flip to page 350 and see that it runs past Kim Tolley’s Penley Estate for about 9 miles in a line of earth that is perfect for growing Cabernet. Need to know where the Horse Heaven Hills are? Well, on page 315 of course. While Johnson/Robinson are the well-known names on the cover of “The World Atlas of Wine,” I’d like to toast a Ms. Zoë Goodwin who, according to her Linked-In profile, has “Excellent organisational skills — methodical and rigorous approach to achieving tasks and objectives.” Her skills and approach to her post as Cartographic Editor of the sixth edition have been on display to me on countless occasions for the five years that I have owned this book. Cheers Zoë! Of course the times are a-changin’ and anything worth doing is worth doing digitally. A new website called Everyvine.com

has the potential to change the way that vintners, grape growers, grape buyers and ultimately consumers interact with vineyards. On the site, currently, are maps and visuals of over 1,000 vineyards and wine tasting rooms. Click on a winery, say PennerAsh in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and a Google map satellite image of the winery and the surrounding vineyards will appear in a box. Make the map larger and click on one of the surrounding vineyards and it will be highlighted with a box that gives information like the Block Name, in this case Pommard Upper, its size, 2.58 acres, the region it is in, a rating of the wines from that vineyard, whether it is has a sustainable rating, the elevation, surface profile, soil profile (fine-silty, mixed, mesic ultic haploxeralfs), etc, etc. etc. Amazing. And that is just the beginning. Everyvine has a 3-D graphic application that uses technology from film studios to allow a user to fly over a vineyard, or to see what it is like when a fog bank rolls

in, or what it looks like at sunset. This technology will change the way vintners look at their vines. They may well, one day, make growing decisions based on the data and the 3D visuals they see on Everywine.com. For consumers, imagine drinking a chardonnay from, say, the Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard at Flowers. You love the wine and you know it is impacted by the coastal influence of the vineyard. You log on, find the vineyard and get a 3-D map that takes you high above the grapes and spins you around the Sonoma Coast so that you can see the ocean and feel how the vines drop off either side of the ridge. You take another sip. Maps and wine. They can take you on a journey.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

SONIC SEASONING HOW MUSIC AFFECTS FLAVOR

CRACKERS CRUNCHING. Birds chirping. Wrappers crinkling. Aspen leaves rustling. A cork popping followed by fizz as bubbly glug-glugs into a plastic cup. Excited chatter punctuated by laughter. Happy picnic sounds fill the air outside of the Benedict Music Tent, where scores of smiling patrons have settled on a Sunday evening with food and drink AMANDA RAE to enjoy alongside the Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS) concert. Contrast the sweet sounds of music here and onstage at the campus of the Aspen Music Festival and School with the din of grating, chipping cement as a jackhammer tears apart a sidewalk near a cluster of café tables at an eatery in town. Few diners sit here; more passersby grimace and scurry off in search of more pleasant places to lunch. We all know that background noise can influence our enjoyment of a meal — as anyone who has suffered through dinner beside a loud talker or wailing baby will attest. But might food and wine seem to taste better when served alongside pleasant instrumentals as opposed to the same food set to a backdrop of screeching cacophony? As it turns out, yes. Researchers at the University of Oxford in England have found a link between sounds and how we perceive taste, noting that high-frequency music — flutes, violins — enhance sweet

and sour flavors in food, while low frequencies — trombones, tubas, rumbling bass lines — bring out bitterness. Led by experimental psychologist Charles Spence, the study picks apart “multi-sensory food perception,” or how sound, like smell, plays an important role in the total experience of eating. In addition to discovering that a silky jazz groove will draw out tannic notes of espresso and chocolate, they also show that classical music has the ability to make diners perceive food as more expensive and that flavors fade more quickly on the tongue when sampled with fast-paced tunes. As a result, Spence’s team is experimenting with “synesthetic sounds,” and how pairing music with food might enhance certain qualities in that food. “We’re able to show that we can change the experience in [the] mouth by about 5 or 10 percent,” Spence told NPR. Though this study is new, the concept of pairing music with food has percolated for years. In 1997, acclaimed British chef Heston Blumenthal served a dish of seafood and pickled seaweed that arrived to the table with an iPod playing ocean sounds. The intention: to make the dish taste fresher in his restaurant, The Fat Duck, in the landlocked town of Bray, England. Martin Oswald, chef-owner of Pyramid Bistro and Catering, understands this phenomenon well, having prepared elaborate feats in the VIP tents during JAS concerts

at the Benedict Tent and in Snowmass for 15 years. “Music does impact the perception of an event and the food,” says Oswald, conductor of a tight-knit crew of private chefs from across the valley. “And memory: When you listen to music and eat flavors that you remember from years ago. [Our job is] trying to match it up the best we can.” The food itself doesn’t change — “sound waves don’t necessarily impact flavor profiles,” Oswald explains — but the experience of eating shifts. “Put cinnamon in there, and its still gonna taste like cinnamon no matter what the music sounds like,” he adds. “But memory recall will be triggered. It works really well together.” Oswald considers style of music when planning a menu, which changes every evening. Cajun cuisine, such as jambalaya, might accompany New Orleans jazz. For a country jam, Oswald will smoke

ribs, chicken, and brisket with all the fixins’. “[Diners] want fresh, clean, light flavors in conjunction,” adds the chef, who will cater to some 2,000 people across five cooking stations in the VIP tents at the upcoming JAS Labor Day Experience in Snowmass. “It’s really about diversity: scallops, rabbit, barbecue, Asian flavors.” When creating dishes, Oswald considers guests’ total sensory experience. So, to balance cochinita pibil — a classic Mexican dish of pork shoulder marinated in allspice, achiote and habanero chiles, lime, and orange juice, then slow-roasted overnight in banana leaves — he’ll create a sweet-andsour garnish of grapefruit with spicy watercress. Spence’s study notes how sound most affects our perception of texture: think crunchy crudités or snappy popcorn, and associating those noises with favorite snacks.

LISTEN UP AND EAT! Pack a picnic and enjoy “sonic seasoning” this summer:

Oswald recalls watching diners sample a dish of roasted leg of lamb topped with a watermelon-tomato salsa. “They think it’s just tomato, but the crunch of the watermelon [surprised people].” Music also amps up the Pyramid Bistro staff. “To pump me up in the morning I get music going before service,” says Oswald, who blasted electronic beats in his

kitchen this morning. “Right now we’re listening to salsa music. It’s energizing. It sets the mood for the kitchen crew.” Tunes and food, sunshine and summer: all of these belong together. A FEW BRANDS ON THE MARKET: Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy Samuel Adams Porch Rocker Shock Top Lemon Shandy Narragansett Del’s Shandy Curious Traveler Lemon Shandy

Don’t let life’s lemons sour your summer. Use them to sour your beer, instead. It’s what’s called a shandy, a refreshing drink that classically is beer mixed with lemonade, though other flavors can be used. It has been a seasonal staple in Europe since at least the mid-1800s when British drinkers ordered their “shandygaff,” often beer mixed with ginger ale. But lately it’s been showing up on American cocktail menus and supermarket shelves, with new bottled and canned varieties on the market and bartenders experimenting with their own fruity beer combos. The idea is to have fun with a drink that’s a little bit lower in alcohol and a departure from some of the oh-so-serious drinks that have been dominating cocktail menus recently. Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times publisher, Gunilla Asher, who passed away June 2, 2014, after a brave battle with cancer. Cheers — to Gunner!

ASPEN UNTUCKED

by BARBARA PLATTS

The Lawn is open to anyone; but please, follow the rules!

THE LAWN RULES

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF THE LAWN NEXT TO THE BENEDICT MUSIC TENT NOTICE POSTED by the board of Picnic People Who Want to Continue to Listen to Music Outside the Benedict Music Tent: We would appreciate if all users of The Lawn would adhere to the following rules/ recommendations/ encouragements/ warnings. We’ve been BARBARA given a gift to be able PLATTS to listen to worldrenowned classical musicians free of charge in Aspen, Colorado. Due to the generosity bestowed on us by the Aspen Music Festival and School, we have taken it upon ourselves to post and enforce the following for those using The Lawn. With a full season ahead of us, we ask that you read this list thoroughly and follow our direction, lest you end up in a loud, downstairs club listening to top 40, bass dropping hits for the REST OF YOUR LIFE! PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING ON THE LAWN: • Vocal communication: People are trying to listen to classical music here. • Permit your child to laugh: If they are of the giggling type, leave them at home with a babysitter. • Sneeze: Hold it in! If you must sneeze please walk away from The Lawn. • Bring a large dog that may

P H OTO B Y BA R BA R A P L AT T S

scare the smaller ones or bring a small dog that gets too yappy and annoys the larger ones. Bite your nails: We realize this isn’t really a loud activity, but it certainly isn’t a pretty one either. Get too belligerent: Look, we appreciate intoxication, particularly if it’s reached via the avenue of fine wines and luxurious liquors, but we ask that it not lead to gregarious roars or vibrant guffaws.

WE ENCOURAGE THE FOLLOWING ON THE LAWN: • Large, colorful umbrellas: Especially when there is no forecast for rain. • Yellow ponchos that are two sizes too big. • Floral printed camp chairs — Just like grandma’s sofa. • Those outdoor chairs that have a little built-in awning over them for shelter from rain and shine: Those are very appropriate. Bonus if yours has a cup holder! • Clever reading material: You know, something that really shows your intelligence… like The New Yorker, The Economist or an academic study on how classical music positively affects the brain. • Largely brimmed, floppy hats made of beaver hide … I mean, why not, right? • Cat naps: This helps to represent the serenity of The

Lawn. However, be careful that this does not turn into a deep sleep where snoring is probable. NO SNORING IS ALLOWED ON THE LAWN! FOOD AND DRINKS NOT TO EAT ON THE LAWN: • Carrots: The crunch is extremely disruptive. • Any edible item wrapped in aluminum foil that you will ultimately have to unwrap. • Lay’s Potato Chips: It’s not so much the crunch. Frankly, you’re looking a bit plump as of late and don’t need any further encouragement. • Popcorn: This ain’t no movie theater. We are a classy ass bunch and don’t need movie time treats. • Champagne: While celebrating is always encouraged, champagne bottles are noisy when being uncorked. And often they fizz over, which can be distracting. • Beer in a can or bottle format: Growlers are acceptable if they are opened before the music begins. • NOTE: If you are not sure if a food item is appropriate to bring, please feel free to contact the board. FOOD AND DRINK WE RECOMMEND EATING ON THE LAWN: • Salmon: It’s quiet and healthy! However, please

• •

adhere to the above rule regarding aluminum foil. Soup: As long as you don’t make that disagreeable slurping sound. Cheese: Sans crackers please … we don’t appreciate the crunch. Sake: Quiet, versatile and cultured. Sophisticated wines that you can speak knowledgeably about. No boxed wines please.

Please take note of all of the rules/recommendations/ encouragements/warnings listed above. As stated before, we are incredibly fortunate to have access to the music that plays in the Benedict Music Tent for free and we do not need any messy, loud or just plain unappealing individuals messing that up for the rest of us. If adherence to the above is not met you will get one warning before you are considered inept to participate in the musical enjoyment of The Lawn. Thank you for your time, and happy summer!

Barbara Platts thinks that sitting out on The Lawn during a performance in the Benedict Music Tent is hands down one of the best summer activities available in Aspen. She just wishes people would respect the rules! Reach her at bplatts.000@gmail.com.

TURNING ASPEN JR BRINGS GLOBAL ART PROJECT TO TOWN DURING ASPEN INSTITUTE RESIDENCY by ANDREW TRAVERS

HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS are pasted across gondola plaza. More are plastered on plywood structures at Aspen Meadows. One short film has been made, another screened along with a once-in-a-lifetime live dance performance.

ALL EVIDENCE THAT JR WAS HERE.

THE SEMI-ANONYMOUS FRENCH ARTIST AND FILMMAKER made his mark on Aspen in late June and early July as an artist-in-residence at the Aspen Institute. He rolled into town on June 26 with his Inside Out Project, a world-wide participatory art happening headquartered in a photo booth truck that’s outfitted to look like a massive camera. Locals and out-of-towners here for the Aspen Ideas Festival lined up at the truck, parked between Paepcke Auditorium and the Benedict Music Tent, to have their portraits taken. Moments after a photo was snapped in the truck, a large-format paper print unfurled out of the side of the vehicle. “The truck is the most magical thing,” JR said in an Ideas Fest talk at Paepcke. Billed as “a global art project

transforming messages of personal identity into works of art,” Inside Out has shot about 200,000 people in 112 countries. The photo booth truck has traveled Nepal, Mexico, Palestine and Israel; it’s focused on communities like the Lakota tribe in North Dakota, the LGBT community in Russia and soldiers in Armenia. The artist, whose given name is unknown but whose age is believe to be 30, launched the Inside Out Project in 2011 after he won the TED Prize, an honor that comes with “one wish to change the world” and cash to attempt to make it come true. He saw the project as a way to enable people in communities across the world to tell their own story through public art. Each Inside Out “action,” as JR calls them, is archived and documented online. “I’ve tried taking photos in places all over the world and I realized one

thing — I went to Sudan, I went to Switzerland, I went to Aspen, the south of France, everywhere — everywhere people are looking for dignity,” he said. “That’s what we all have in common.” At gondola plaza, JR went to work with a team of six, using glue and a sweeper broom to plaster more than 100 of the images from the mobile photo booth between the Silver Queen Gondola and the Residences at the Little Nell, forming a massive group portrait at the base of Aspen Mountain (the artist took a dirt bike ride up the hill shortly before his presentation at the festival, crashing in a patch of snow near the mountaintop). Around Anderson Park, amid sagebrush and tall grass, he pasted blown-up photos of eyes on plywood. They looked on as the Ideas Festival crowds passed

through. He positioned a pair of eyes, also, in the pond at the park’s upvalley end. There, he enlisted dancer Charles “Lil Buck” Riley to make a short film. Buck entered the water on Sunday, June 28, and performed a slow solo aquatic ballet of contortion and gravity defiance, as JR — in his signature sunglasses and trilby hat – filmed from a bridge. JR screened the resulting one-minute film, backed by an operatic score, at the festival. JR came into the Aspen Institute fold last year, when he collaborated with the New York City Ballet and Buck on an original piece, “Les Bosquets” — a 20-minute filmed version of which screened at Ideas Fest. Aspen Institute arts program director Damien Woetzel, the ballet company’s former principal dancer, invited JR to Aspen for a residency

“I’VE TRIED TAKING PHOTOS IN PLACES ALL OVER THE WORLD AND I REALIZED ONE THING — I WENT TO SUDAN, I WENT TO SWITZERLAND, I WENT TO ASPEN, THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, EVERYWHERE — EVERYWHERE PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR DIGNITY. THAT’S WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON.” — JR, ARTIST & FILMMAKER CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Charles “Lil Buck Riley, James Lartin, John and May Cary posing with their JR portraits on gondola plaza; JR at work.

during the course of the dance collaboration. “When I spoke to JR about coming here, he said, ‘Well, we have to do something! We can’t just talk about stuff we already did,’” recalled Woetzel. “We talked about what had already been done. We built on the [Inside Out] Project. We built on ‘Les Bosquets.’ … Then it just came together the other night.” Founded in 2006, the Institute’s Harman-Eisner Artist in Residence program has hosted luminaries like actress Alfre Woodard, director Julie Taymor, author Tobias Wolff and — last year — Lil Buck. The post lasts a year, and brings the artist to Ideas Fest along with Institute events in New York, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere in an effort to bring an artist’s perspective to the Institute’s policy work and public programs (and vice versa).

JR had been writing graffiti since his teen years and fell into photography after finding a camera in a Paris subway station. That camera fueled his first major art project, “Portraits of a Generation,” in 2004, in which he pasted massive portraits of local young people on the housing projects in Cité des Bosquets, a neighborhood in the Parisian suburbs. When massive riots broke out in the area the following year during demonstrations over youth unemployment, police harassment and economic disparity, his images in the background were the subject of worldwide media coverage. JR, improbably, became a star of the contemporary art world. As the media portrayed his friends and neighbors as dehumanized thugs during the riots — the largest there

since the French Revolution — he responded with more portraits and humongous pastings, including the subject’s full name and address when he plastered them on buildings as an invitation for police and media members to come meet them faceto-face. “They were telling me they felt observed, they felt like animals in a cage. … I said, ‘Let me take a photo,’” he recalled. The police didn’t bother stopping JR from doing his illegal pastings. “They saw we were covering up graffiti that said, like, ‘Fuck the police,’ so they were happy with us,” he said. His new film, “Les Bosquets,” mixes video footage JR has shot in the area over the last decade with a street ballet version of the New York City Ballet composition. He filmed it in his neighborhood with New York City Ballet dancers and

Buck portraying police, media and protesters during the riots. It ends with the cast standing in a row, their leotards together forming a portrait of two eyes. The film, at the Ideas Fest screening, concluded with an unannounced performance from Buck. As it ended, he entered the auditorium holding a scroll in his arms and stalking toward the stage. A projection of a JR portrait of one of Buck’s eyes filled the Paepcke screen. He unfurled another portrait of his eye and held it in front of him as he danced to a previously unheard, slowed down, aching recording of Pharell Williams’ “Happy” over an original Hans Zimmer score. As the song ended, Buck crumpled the portrait. When Buck hit the stage, JR materialized beside this reporter at the back of the auditorium. He stood

on a chair, shooting the action with a camera and a smartphone — at times, both simultaneously — his shades still on in the dark of the theater. Like his photos and public art actions, he’s uninterested in imposing meaning on the viewer of the film. “I love to think of this piece as just a poem,” he said. “Depending on where you are and who you are, you’re going to read it differently.” The meaning of his large format photos of people, normally pasted conspicuously in public, often depends on the context and the viewer’s perspective. But it also often depends on the subjects themselves. Taking part in JR’s Inside Out Project, a person or a community as a whole may make a political statement or may simply take home a souvenir from the

28

F

renowned artist. Either way is all right by JR. “Everybody wants to put their photo out there,” he said. “What’s changing, depending on where they’re from, is the meaning behind it. For some people it’s just a selfie, and it’s ego, and that’s fine. For some people it’s about fighting for democracy in their country.” As his massive black-and-white portraits fill a city, whether they’re of the dispossessed in Brazil and France or of the non-celebrity faces of Aspen, Colorado, these photos argue that the people — not the buildings — are what make a place and give it an identity. Last year, on Ellis Island, he used a similar approach to raise ghosts. On the abandoned half of the island, in unrestored 19th-century immigration

Jul y 9 - Jul y 15 , 2015

buildings that are slowly going back into the earth, JR pasted archival images of the people who worked and passed through there. His work will remain there, seen only by the animals taking their habitat back and by people who take hard-hat tours with the U.S. National Parks Service, until the buildings crumble. Wandering the abandoned facility, he said he felt the presence of those who came through places like the Ellis Island hospital hoping for a better life in the U.S. “I would look at the cityscape and think about how these people would sit in this room for 40 days not knowing if they would make it to the other side,” he said of the immigration hospital. In conjunction with the Ellis Island work, he brought the Inside Out Project to New York and elsewhere in the U.S., capturing images of today’s immigrants. “They used it to say ‘We are here,’” he said. “You can’t tell who

»

are illegal aliens and who are not from the photos.” JR’s work isn’t made to be bought or sold. It’s meant to appear and be perceived, unexpectedly, in public. (Woetzel described JR as owning “the world’s largest art gallery”). Due to his free and public approach, when the New York Times Magazine approached JR about a cover story earlier this year, he demurred. “The nature of my work is that it’s right there in the street, there is no copyright,” he said. “I said, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know what we can do.’” But when an editor mentioned an issue with the theme “Walking New York,” his interest was piqued. Taking the Inside Out Project a step further for the Times, he photographed immigrants in New York — his subjects holding his portraits of them, hiding themselves behind the print-outs. He also wanted to paste a photo on the streets so large that people would miss it. So in front of the Flatiron Building, he pasted a photo of a man that covered the entire plaza. JR worked from 2 a.m. to sunrise to complete it. In the

morning, as the daily metropolitan throng descended on Manhattan’s streets, people walked over it, not noticing the artwork beneath their feet. “They were there, walking on his face, walking on his arms, photographing the Flatiron,” he said with a mischievous laugh. A photo of the piece, taken by JR from an overhead helicopter, literally drew oohs and ahs from the Ideas Fest crowd when JR shared it. Such projects are risky, and not only because they’re most often illegal. Successfully completing his guerrilla art pastings is never assured. Often, he’ll fly to a location for an art project — to Rio de Janeiro, to Medellin, Colombia, to Aspen — with an idea in his mind and a will to get it done, but without infrastructure or approvals on the ground to do the work. “That’s when it feels right — when there’s a big chance of failure, that’s when I know it’s right,” he said. “As an artist you have the right to fail. I live in that zone of now knowing if it’s going to happen.”

Following a screening of two short JR films, Charles “Lil Buck” Riley performed onstage at Paepcke Auditorium. Afterward, JR and Buck discussed their collaboration Damien Woetzel of the Aspen Institute.

NOTEWORTHY

‘CRAZY HORSE’S GIRLFRIEND’ “UNLESS YOU’RE INTO METH or having sex with people you’re related to, you’ll find shit’s pretty boring here” in Idaho Springs, 16-year-old Margaritte matter-of-factly tells a newcomer, as she introduces the boy to the downtrodden Rocky Mountain town just west of Denver. Margaritte is the protagonist of “Crazy Horse’s Girlfriend,” the debut novel by Colorado native Erika Wurth, a poet who teaches creative writing at Western Illinois University. Funny, tough, realistic and heartbreakingly foolish, Margaritte is a high school drug dealer on the fast track to teenaged motherhood and welfare; her dad, a white man, is drunk and abusive, while her Indian mother ceaselessly forgives and enables him. Like the author, Margaritte is Apache/Chickasaw/Cherokee; her best friend is her adopted cousin, Jake. “He’s Nez Perce, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, by ELIZABETH C. GORSKI / edited by WILL SHORTZ

him overwhelmed my resentment, and that was even worse.” She and the new boy fall in love. His family, wealthy and white, buys him expensive outdoor gear, but he’s never slept outside. Margaritte takes him camping on Mount Evans. Sitting beside the campfire, she finds bliss. “I felt so content, so beautiful parts of me felt like they were dying off, exploding.” As Margaritte careens into and out of disaster, her strong fingers grip the reader’s heart from the very first sentence, never letting go. She skids close to the edge of unredeemable stereotype, then screeches decisively to a halt, exploding into brilliant humanity. Exhilarated and terrified, readers of “Crazy Horse’s Girlfriend” will be grateful for the ride. 7

For nearly 300 pages, Margaritte speeds toward impending doom, pausing along the way for multiple pit stops at the emergency room, a detour to an abortion clinic, various alcoholand drug-fueled forays, and a flight with her mother and younger twin sisters to a hotel, followed by their drunk, gun-toting father. Yet, Margaritte’s kindness and compassion prevail. Even after her father literally drives the family into a ditch during a thunderstorm, she thinks, “Sometimes my sadness for
