FILM ASPEN FILM WILL HOST two preview screenings of “Southpaw,” a new film starring a beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer on the comeback trail, on July 21. The movie, by “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua and “Sons of Anarchy” writer Kurt Setter, co-star’s Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Gyllenhaal’s slick manager, Forest Whitaker as his reluctant trainer, and Rachel McAdams as his wife, with original songs by Eminem. Following its world premiere at the Shanghai Film Festival, “Southpaw” is among the summer’s most anticipated dramas — and a welcome cinematic respite from a summer glutted with sequels and franchise movies. Gyllenhaal has generated some Oscar buzz for his performance and extreme physical transformation into light heavyweight champion Billy “The Great” Hope. When tragedy strikes the reigning champion and his lifelong manager (Jackson) leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to an unlikely savior at a rundown local gym: Tick Willis (Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer. With his future riding on Tick’s guidance and tenacity, Hope enters the hardest battle of his life as he struggles with redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves. Free admission to the preview screenings is on a first-come basis. The line will form at the theater 30 minutes prior to the 5:30 and 8:15 p.m. screenings. A $25 tax-deductible donation to Aspen Film guarantees priority admission; a $50 tax-deductible donation includes priority admission and reserved section seating. Tickets at the Wheeler Opera House box office and www.aspenshowtix.com. More info at www.aspenfilm.org. Read more about the film in the Monday, July 20 edition of The Aspen Times.

Aspen Film will host two preview screenings of “Southpaw” on July 21.

CURRENTEVENTS DANCE

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will perform Nicolo Fonte’s “1st Flash” (pictured) and the premiere of Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Silent Ghost” on Saturday, July 18.

The Aspen Art Museum will host a survey of works by British painter Chris Ofili, opening July 17.

ART ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET will premiere choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Silent Ghost” on Saturday, July 28. Cerrudo — bred in Spain and now based in Chicago, where he is resident choreographer with the Hubbard Street Dance – created the piece on the local dancers. The 12-dancer company will perform “Silent Ghost” alongside two other pieces commissioned for Aspen Santa Fe in previous seasons: Jorma Elo’s “1st Flash,” which Elo tweaked with the company earlier this summer, and “Beautiful Mistake” by Cayetano Soto. Tickets and more information at www.aspensantafeballet.com. Read more about Cerrudo’s work in the Weekend section of The Aspen Times on Friday, July 17.

THE TURNER PRIZE-WINNING PAINTER Chris Ofili is taking over the Aspen Art Museum, in what promises to be the largest show since its new building opened last summer. The first solo survey of his work will fill five galleries on three levels of the museum, showcasing his work from 1992 to the present and including painting, drawing and sculpture. The show was organized by the New Museum in New York, where it was initially staged. It opens July 17. More info at www.aspenartmuseum.org

AW, JEEZ, now Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is running, formally, for the top job in the U.S., a fact that should make everybody, old and young alike, tremble uncontrollably. Everyone except his Republican buddies, I guess, since they are greeting his candidacy with high-fives and whoops of joy at the idea of his becoming “Polluter In Chief.” After doing everything he could to ruin the State of Wisconsin, he wants to turn his spotlight of destruction on the entire country by somehow fooling us into electing him president. What’s that, you say? How has he ruined Wisconsin? I’m really glad you asked. Walker’s most famous act has been to wipe out the collective bargaining rights of most state employees, though the antiworker axe notably spared the state troopers who have the job of guarding his body. I guess even he isn’t dumb enough to piss off a bunch of guys and gals who carry guns and happen to be standing next to him all the time. But his anti-labor crusade is not what I’m interested in today. It’s his anti-environment record I want to highlight. According to a report in the New Republic over the weekend, Walker is “the most dangerous candidate on climate change.” And that, I have to say, is a notable distinction among a crowd of political aspirants who have declared that climate change is the one thing they all agree on — meaning they deny, universally, that human causes can be implicated in the globe’s worsening climatological circumstances. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, for example, has declared he wants to repeal federal regulations on climate change because he believes there is no evidence that the climate has warmed in the past 15 years. I can only presume the rock he lives under is very wide and located next to a swamp, where evaporative cooling keeps his skin pale and his internal organs, including his brain, operating at low rpm’s. In other words, Cruz is a humanoid lizard who can’t see beyond the end of his own political ambitions. Well, Walker is right there with the Cruz-meister. He has slashed funding for Wisconsin’s once-admired set of environmental regulations, which go all the way back past the halcyon days of environmental activism of former Gov. Gaylord Nelson. He wants to vastly reduce the role of science in environmental policymaking, by cutting a third of the state’s 58 scientist-jobs at the Department of Natural Resources, freeze funding for the state’s popular land-conservation fund, and in 2013 paved the way for a mining company, Gogebic

Taconite, to build a 4-mile long open pit mine in the Lake Superior watershed and dump mine waste into wetlands adjoining that watershed. His actions essentially doubled the acreage that the mine could pollute, compared to prior regulations, and strips citizens of any and all rights to sue mining companies for illegal environmental damage. The company, which helped write the laws in question, dropped the mining proposal when it discovered unexpected expanses of wetlands, and realized it would have been forced to deal with federal wetlands regulations rather than Walker’s pet-governor mandates. Walker also has eased restrictions on the manufacture of “fracking sand,” the particles used in the hydraulic fracturing process for coaxing deeply buried reserves of oil and gas. The sand comes from the famous, and fabulous, bluff country along the Mississippi River, and has raised the hackles of activists of all persuasions along the river corridor. In addition, Walker, who was first elected in 2011, has undermined laws passed in 2010 that imposed volumetric restrictions on phosphorus pollution, which has demonstrably devastated the state’s waterways and is known to be harmful to aquatic life as well as human health. And he joined 13 other states in challenging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan, which was meant to cut carbon emissions from the state’s power plants by 34 percent. The lawsuit behind that challenge was dismissed by a federal court last month, but I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of this. I note that, according to an article in last month’s Scientific American magazine, Walker cited research funded by Peabody Energy in arguing that the EPA’s new rules would be too expensive for the industry, and implied that his state would not abide by the rules even if they are put into effect. The list goes on, ad nauseum, but you get the idea. Scott Walker is an environmental disaster just waiting to spread beyond the boundaries of the poor, benighted state he currently is running into the ground. Even some in his own party, such as retired Republican state senator Dale Schultz, think Walker is out of control and dangerously beholden to the Koch brothers and other right-wing billionaires whose main interest in politics is to dismantle any and all government regulations that might get in the way of their profits. Make no mistake, Scott Walker never met a polluter he didn’t like, as long as the polluter had a deep pocket.

WOODBRIDGE REALTY OF COLORADO YOUR ASPEN VALLEY REALTORS

INTRODUCING

KIMBERLY RAUMAN

We’re excited to introduce our newest team member, Kimberly Rauman. Having grown up in the valley, Kimberly is a local that has spent her life doing business in the area and giving back to the community. We sat down with Kimberly for a short chat about her background and how she found herself working in real estate. How did you get started in real estate? I grew up in this valley. After selling my successful women’s clothing retail business in Glenwood Springs, I really missed the overall sales process, especially working with people and helping them ďŹ nd the ‘perfect ďŹ t.’ I also really enjoyed the process when it came to buying and selling our own properties, which is why I decided to pursue a career in real estate. What’s your favorite part of the job? I enjoy every part of it but mainly in connecting with people, identifying and interpreting their needs - and helping them ďŹ nd their dream home or piece of land to build on. Selling and buying a property can sometimes be stressful and I like to think that I make the whole experience as painless as possible for my clients. Buying or selling a home is a huge undertaking and I love nothing more than being able to facilitate the perfect outcome for my clients. What’s your favorite area of the Roaring Fork Valley? Anywhere outdoors. We’re so blessed to live in one of the most spectacularly beautiful places in Colorado, in the whole of the US in fact. I’m a very ‘outdoorsey’ person and love to snowmobile, boat, hike, mountain bike, and run, year round. What’s one thing people may be surprised to learn about you? I have a steely determination and conďŹ dence that comes from having owned my own business from such a young age.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Empress Farah Pahlavi of Iran visited Aspen in 1974.

ENTERTAINING AN EMPRESS Since 9/11, security dominates our daily lives: screening at

airports, parcel scrutiny at the post office, bag checks at sporting events, and even metal detectors at our children’s schools. It was a different era when Aspen entertained a high-profile international figure of the 1970s. Robert O. Anderson, who bought a home in Aspen in the mid-1950s, became the chairman of the board and major benefactor to the Aspen Institute. Under his influence the scope and outreach of the Institute moved beyond the original “Aspen idea” of running executive seminars to expose corporate heads to the humanities. By 1975 the Institute initiated programs with international aspirations. Anderson’s deep pockets and his unusual commitment to the organization and the humanities saved the Institute whenever it was short of funds. He was chairman of the board of Atlantic Richfield and made a fortune in oil. He had large land holdings. When he added the 850,000acre King Ranch in Texas to his New Mexico holdings, he became the largest landowner in America. His acreage exceeded that of some states. Anderson and the Institute courted the Shah of Iran, especially through Farah Pahlavi, the Empress. Pahlavi replaced the Shaw’s previous wife because the former could not produce a male child. Once Pahlavi gave birth to an heir to the throne, the title Empress was conferred on her. She turned her attention to building museums and

10

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

acquiring art collections for them. She also championed the advancement of women, and those actions endeared her to half the Iranian public. The Aspen Institute made her an honorary trustee in 1973.

I worked on the tent crew that summer and we were given a heads-up notice that the Empress was coming. The entourage of dignitaries toured the tent, and my memory is that the Empress outshone her hosts with her

THE EMPRESS HAD BODY GUARDS, BUT THE KIND OF SECURITY WE READILY ACCEPT, OR EVEN WELCOME, TODAY WAS NOT CONTEMPLATED IN ASPEN BACK THEN. ASPEN WAS THE TOWN WHERE CELEBRITIES COULD WANDER THE STREETS WITHOUT GROUPIES SWARMING AND HOUNDING THEM FOR AUTOGRAPHS. THE INSTITUTE HAD ENTERTAINED MANY HIGH-PROFILE VISITORS LIKE GERMAN CHANCELLOR WILLIE BRANDT, BUT ALL WERE GIVEN THE SAME ASPEN ALOOF RECEPTION. UNESCO and the Iranian government staged an international symposium on literacy in 1975 with some involvement by the Aspen Institute. Anderson and Joseph Slater, the Institute’s president, secured a promise of $750,000 for Institute programs through the Empress. The Institute honored her in Persepolis and a visit to Aspen was arranged for the summer.

Jul y 16 - Jul y 22 , 2015

beauty, grace and inner humanity. But the Shah of Iran’s regime was drawing a different kind of attention, and humanitarian was not the word used to describe it. Colorado colleges, even Western State in Gunnison, had many Iranian students then. Nearly all of them distanced themselves from their native country; some hoped to marry an American to avoid the wrath of the Shah. They would face prison

and torture at home for protesting their government, but this was America. The tent had many entrances, none of them secure, and the grounds were open, unfenced. The Empress had body guards, but the kind of security we readily accept, or even welcome, today was not contemplated in Aspen back then. Aspen was the town where celebrities could wander the streets without groupies swarming and hounding them for autographs. The Institute had entertained many highprofile visitors like German Chancellor Willie Brandt, but all were given the same Aspen aloof reception. There were no incidents in 1975, but the Empress, besides charming her hosts, signaled that the “old Aspen” traditions would have to be tempered someday. When President Bush met with Margaret Thatcher a few years later, the Secret Service showed the community what modern security means. Everything was checked out and nailed down tight in advance, from timing how long it would take to get to the hospital from different locations to finding out which doctors would be on staff if a hospital trip was needed. There were no celebrity strolls through the neighborhood, and a less-than-aloof protest demonstration erupted when the limos sped through town.

Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@comcast.net.

EAGLE EYE

1983 ASPEN

ON NOV. 17, 1983, The Aspen Times published an article by Mary Eshbaugh Hayes about an opportunity to see birds of prey in an intimate setting. As the article noted, “it’s unusual to see a hawk or an eagle or an owl up close. Circling high in the sky are the hawks and eagles… now and again swooping down on their prey. Asleep all day and flying by night are the owls. But now Aspenites can get a close look at these birds, on Bird of Prey Day, or rather Hawk, Eagle and Owl Day on Sunday, Nov. 27 at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies at Hallam Lake. Most of the time the birds live in big cages at Hallam Lake. But on this day they will be showing off how they can fly. Several volunteers, Tom Fisher (who has a falconer’s license), Janelle Dolby and Judy Anderson, have been working with the birds for several months. The birds are flown every evening. The training at Hallam Lake is the same as that used by falconers who breed and train hawks for hunting. The bird is on a leash and placed on a perch. The falconer holds meat on his or her fist and the bird flies to get the meat and then flies back to the perch. The bird gets its meal by flying for it, and the bird’s wings strengthen every time it flies. If a bird is to be released back into the wilds, it is taught to hunt with the falconer presenting live food. Birds of a feather flock together, but the only birds of prey at the Hallam Lake preserve are those who are used as teaching aids, or who were taken there because they had been injured.” The photo above was taken by Mary Eshbaugh Hayes, and shows Janelle Dolby, Judy Anderson and Tom Fisher of ACES holding their birds of prey. This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org

POWER WASH: THE RINSE KIT

www.rinsekit.com

“A SHOWER IN A BOX.” That’s one description of the RinseKit, a portable, pressurized water tank with a hose hidden inside. It opens like a toolbox. The company markets the $90 unit to surfers, fishermen, campers, and anyone who needs a spout off the grid. You fill it up at home, connecting the RinseKit (www.rinsekit.com) to your garden hose with an included attachment piece. Add up to 2 gallons of tap water to the box, which then can be squirted out for a couple of minutes before the reservoir goes dry. No batteries are required, no pumping is involved. Water pressure from your home is essentially transferred into the RinseKit.

The box has a chamber that maintains about 65 psi of water pressure, guaranteeing a healthy spray. I tested it out over a month and was happy with the product. The RinseKit, invented by a surfer in California, is wellbuilt and easy to use. It has come in handy across a range of outdoor activities. At a beach, the hose is long enough for an ad hoc car shower. For camping you can use it to wash dishes. Or spray off a dirty mountain bike after a muddy trail day. The hose head is a garden-style sprayer with settings from a light mist to a muddybike-cleaning “jet” mode. You do need to conserve the water, as it drains quickly on the high-power settings.

But its banked 2 gallons will last for up to three minutes of constant spray when set to a shower mode. There’s a built-in ruler to measure fish. A solid handle folds up for carrying, and the hose coils to tuck inside when not in use. The box weighs about 24 pounds when full of water. It sits in the back of my family van pressurized and at the ready. For its price tag ($90), the RinseKit may seem a bit much for portable water. But it’s a nicety for anyone tired of dealing with sand, grit, mud, and other debris that a squirt or stream of water could easily wash away. WINEINK

GETTING FUNKY WITH IT SO YOU WANT to taste some great wines without getting your shoes dusty? Then consider a trip to the hyper-cool Funk Zone in Santa Barbara. There you’ll find a collection of 20 or so outstanding wineries and tasting rooms operating out of midcentury warehouses and factories, cheek to jowl with art galleries, performances spaces KELLY J. HAYES restaurants, surf shops and a guitar bar. All are kissed daily by the salty scent of the sea and the soothing breezes of the Pacific that is just blocks away. Tucked between Hwy 101 and the ocean, just south of downtown, there may be no other urban zone in the world (maybe Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy) where you can taste so many great, locally produced wines in such a small area. Particularly are great are the Chardonnays and Pinot Noir. Begin with the Aspen connection to the Funk Zone. The Les Marchands Wine Bar & Merchant is a hip, but funky — there’s that word again — space that pours, not just the local grapes, but great wines from the world over. Brian McClintic, who did a stint at The Little Nell when he was working toward his Master Sommelier pin, took a career path that was a bit more adventurous than most Masters and moved to the Funk Zone to open up his dream wine concept. Both a retail shop and a wine bar, you can sample the best wines by the glass from, say, the Canary Islands (a sparkling red Listán Negro-Bodegas los Bermejos Lanzarote, Maceración Carbónica) or from right up the road in Santa Ynez (a Gruner Veltliner by Solminer). You can purchase by the bottle, or the case, or you can simply sit and linger over a glass of wine and a plate of Jamon Serrano, some Le Pommier Camembert cheese or a bowl of house-marinated olives with citrus peel, chili and rosemary. The vibe is incredibly casual and comfortable with a young seaside set of artists, surfers and foodies. Sharing a wall with Les Marchands is the equally eclectic and equally comfortable Santa Barbara Wine

Collective. A “community tasting room” in the sense that it is made up of a collective of winemakers who pour in the same space, this is the place to try the wines of Raj Parr’s Sandhi, as well as those of Babcock, Ca’ del Grevino, Qupe, Fess Parker and The Pairing. The glass garage doors open to a patio that is cool and spontaneous, and it is a great place to compare the wines of the region on a sunny afternoon. And right ’round the corner is Lark, a restaurant that has was on OpenTable’s national “Top 100 Hot Spots” list in March and boasts a hip and current dining scene. There are other great tasting rooms as well, including the Santa Barbara Winery (the original Funk Zone winery), Lafond Winery (which just celebrated its 50th year under Pierre Lafond) and the Pali Wine Company (named for Palisades High School, the alma mater of this writer). Pace yourself as you work your way around. But my favorite visit was to Seth Kunin’s AVA Santa Barbara, subtitled: The Valley Project. Kunin, who has another tasting room a couple of blocks closer to the beach for his Kunin Rhône-style wines,

The Funk Zone’s best: The Valley Project (above), Fess Parker, and the Santa Barbara Wine Collective (opposite page).

opened this educational outpost to let people explore the wines of the region in their totality. Under huge, artistically sketched murals that detail the locations, climate and soils of the five Santa Barbara wine regions, is a bar where wines grown in each of those regions are poured. The space is modern, bright, light and airy, and I could stay all day to sip and talk with the staff about the wines of Santa Barbara.

Of course, if you are staying in Santa Barbara, you don’t have to get too funky. There are a number of amazing hotels, including the hillside hugging El Encanto, Ty Warner’s Four Seasons Biltmore, and the Fess Parker, a Doubletree Hotel that acts like a luxe resort. The Fess Parker is the closest of these to the Funk Zone, just a short walk, or Uber ride if you choose, and it is right across from the Santa

Barbara’s main beach. Affordable, authentic and centrally located, it is my choice for a Funk Zone weekend. Of all the world’s great wine regions, Santa Barbara may be the easiest one to get to from Aspen. Hop on a United flight (OK, that can be an issue) to San Francisco or Los Angeles, connect to the cuter-than-a-Hollywood movie set, Mission-style Santa Barbara Airport, pick up a car and you can be in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley by mid-afternoon. Or the Funk Zone. Book It. Kelly J Hayes. lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab, Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

WHEELS ON FIRE

BOULDER’S ‘CURED DE FRANCE’ CELEBRATES THE EPIC RACE ABROAD CONSIDERED ONE OF the most grueling sporting events in the world, the Tour de France — which began its 112th season on the Fourth of July — sees the most elite cyclists sprint some 2,000 miles in 21 days every summer. Competitors average more than 100 per day as they make their way through the country in an undulating series of daylong stages. What AMANDA RAE unites fans following the frenzy as it travels throughout the most prestigious wine- and cheesemaking regions in the world? We all gotta eat. So former professional cyclist and Tour de France (TDF) competitor Will Frischkorn, who founded cheese, wine, and provisions shops Cured in Boulder four years ago, has created “Cured de France,” a pairing guide celebrating each stage of the epic race. Every few days until the TDF culminates on July 26, Frischkorn shares different foods of France with Colorado foodies. Though his primary suggestions may be found at respectable shops — including at Cured in Boulder and through online order for next-day delivery to Aspen — he also suggests widely available alternatives that capture the culinary spirit of each stage. “France is one of those countries where the old adage, ‘eat and drink items from the same place,’ rings true,” Frischkorn says. That means highlighting “classic regional parings of small-batch cheese and interesting, off-the-beatenpath wine. Our trip is a bit more pleasing to the palate and less punishing to the legs.” Since this year’s TDF launched in the Netherlands, Frischkorn began the Cured de France by featuring a traditional aged Dutch gouda, Wilde Weide, with La Chouffe strong ale from legendary Belgian Brewery Achouffe. Last week, as the peloton traveled counter-clockwise through the cooler climes of northwestern

France — “brutal for both cyclists and wine,” notes Frischkorn, who raced the TDF with Team Garmin in 2008 at age 25 — Cured featured Calvados Notre Dame apple brandy alongside small-production Livarot, a gooey, pungent cow’s milk cheese made in Normandy. (Camembert makes a fine substitute.) “Not many people try Calvados, but you give it to them it with a beautiful, stinky Livarot cheese, and it’s fun to see that response,” Frischkorn says. This week, the peloton travels through the Pyrénées in the culinary mecca of Southern France. As such, Cured features Camin Larredya Jurançon Sec, “a textbook example of some of the amazing wines made from hearty, indigenous grapes in the region,” with Berria de Onetik cooperative Bleu de Basques, a new, 80-day aged sheep’s milk cheese that recently nabbed a gold medal in the French Concours Général Agricole. (Frischkorn also suggests Petit Basque, one of my all-time favorite French cheeses. Try it!) On July 17 to 18, racers tackle the Massif-Central a rough-andtumble area in the middle of France. To the west is Cahors, the homeland of Malbec wine (Cured features Chaeau la Caminade), and Auvergne, known for its cheese. On offer is nutty Puits d’Astier from respected producer Rudolphe le Meunier; customers may also sample classic Bleu d’Auvergne, supple and less salty than other blues. Monday, after a rare flatland sprint, the peloton moves up the Rhône and into Provence: rosé territory. So, Cured de France showcases a favorite from Saint André de Figuière that is “tailormade for cheese.” Because most of the exceptional cheese produced in Provence is consumed in that region, Cured highlights an American goat cheese ripened with ash, Siltcoos, from Rivers Edge Chèvre in Oregon. As the TDF continues through the bucolic Alps on July 24 and 25, customers will

sample a new French goat cheese similar to Morbier with elegant Eugene Carrel Jongieux Rouge, a Mondeuse-based red, which “could be one of the best cheese-pairing reds we’ve ever tasted.” Finally: Paris. Cured celebrates the culmination of the Tour de France on the Champs d’Elysées with Brie and bubbles — Fougerus, named for the fern that graces the top of this gorgeous cheese, and Champagne Moutard Grande Cuvée, made from 100 percent pinot noir at a small, family-owned house. Frischkorn notes many similarities between his stint as a competitive cyclist — which began at age 18 and saw him win the Colorado Cyclist Challenge, the precursor to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge (which runs through Aspen on Aug. 19 and 20; see sidebar, opposite) in 2005 — and opening Cured with wife, Coral, in Boulder.

“The most important similarity is being able to just put your head down and go,” he says. “Cycling is one of the most brutal sports out there. A restaurant (or other business) in the food world — it’s a lot of work, long hours, keeping it cranking. It was a very easy transition.” However, “the biggest thing, for me, is the way a team leader rallies a team to perform for them,” he adds. “As a small business owner, you’re doing that on a daily basis with everyone who works for you. And it’s really fun.” I can’t think of a better match for the Tour de France than regional cheese and wine. Cheers, my dears! USA PRO CHALLENGE PAIRINGS “As more cheesemakers pop up in Colorado, we’re to the point where we could do it,” says Will Frischkorn, owner of Cured in Boulder, about creating a similar series of local cheese and beer pairings to celebrate the upcoming USA Pro Challenge cycling race on August 17-23. Meanwhile try his suggestions, all of which hail from the state: AVALANCHE CHEESE CABRA BLANCA + FUNKWERKS SAISON Basalt cheese, a gift-box staple at Cured since it opened in 2011, meets funky Fort Collins brew. JAMES RANCH LEYDEN + SKA BREWING MODUS HOPERANDI IPA Cumin seeds studding this traditional Dutch-style Gouda pair especially well with hoppy beers, such as this IPA — both of which hail from Durango. FRUITION FARMS SHEEP’S MILK RICOTTA OR SHEPHERD’S HALO + CROOKED STAVE BREWERY SURRETTE PROVISION SAISON Fresh or bloomy rind cheese from Larkspur sings with a tart, cloudy Denver brew boasting heady tropical fruit notes.

GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

ST. REGIS SMASH I don’t generally drink brown liquor, but the mixologists at the St. Regis just might make a whiskey lover out of me with cocktails such as The St. Regis Smash. Crafted with bourbon and enough other flavors — amaretto, peach bitters, mint, sour mix, fruit and more — it tastes more like a froufrou summer drink than a traditional bourbon beverage. I’d say it’s the perfect poolside drink — which is actually dead-on, as the St. Regis is hosting a Poolside Classic Cocktails event with Breckenridge Distillery on Saturday, July 18 at 5:30 p.m. It’s free and open to the public, which means it’s the perfect party for whiskey lovers and those trying to learn to love a new libation. Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times publisher, Gunilla Asher, who passed away June 2, 2014, after a brave battle with cancer. Cheers - to Gunner!

ASPEN UNTUCKED

by BARBARA PLATTS

A panoramic view of the lake from camp, where the writer’s adventure began.

YES TO ADVENTURE! STEPPING OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE

IN THE MONOTONY OF every day life, I think we often forget just how much control we have over our own journey. We get caught up in habits and routines, forgetting to step outside of our comfort zone and take risks. I can’t take credit for the name of this column. It comes from the tagline for Shaboomee Paddle Boards out of BARBARA Carbondale, which has PLATTS a unique story in itself (but more on that in a future column). Shaine Ebrahimi, the founder of Shaboomee, and his girlfriend Mary live the company’s motto through and through, getting out for a new adventure on the water multiple times a week. I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time with Shaine and Mary, getting out on the river on a paddleboard (a feat I never even thought possible). River SUPing was so foreign to me, and frankly still is, and I have been beyond frightened to try it. But once I left my comfort zone, I could tell I was growing as a person. I was taking control over my journey. Last weekend, in an attempt to mix things up a bit, a few friends

P H OTO B Y J I L L B E AT H A R D

and I said yes to adventure and headed out on a two-day paddle boarding/camping trip at a secret island-like location at a mountain lake (the exact spot of this campsite is confidential due to the need to protect its seclusion). The weather forecast for the weekend was moody to say the least, but we went out anyway, ready for whatever was to come. On an adventure (where everyone has said yes, of course) it’s vital to have the right company. The attendees of the adventure must be ready for the unexpected and be able to react quickly to change. Luckily, we had a solid crew. Some of them had never even been on paddleboards, but they approached the new challenge with an open mind and a relatively efficient amount of grace. The goals for the weekend were to have a relaxing lake day Saturday and to summit a 14er Sunday (though we did not know which one until the morning of ). But, just like any adventure, one can’t make plans and think they will fully stick. Saturday brought sunshine and torrential downpour, often only minutes apart from one another. We went from working on our summer tans out on the lake to holding onto our tents for dear

life in what I’m sure were at least 90mph winds (that may be a bit of an exaggeration…they were probably more like 87mph winds). Sunday more than two-thirds of our hiking crew opted out of hiking a 14er for another day on the lake. One of the adventurees got caught up in a windstorm on her SUP that blew her all the way down to the other side of the lake. She was justifiably terrified, needless to say. My friend Jill and I (the only two who were still adamant about summiting a 14er) headed out for Mount Sherman at roughly 10:30, not the safest time to be starting a long, vertical climb, but getting to our cars by paddleboard proved difficult with the strong winds. Sherman is technically on private land so there are few, if any, signs to help hikers decipher which way to go. Plus, the Silver Rush 50 Run was happening at the same time, confusing us even further on what trail we needed to be on to reach the summit. Several wrong turns later, while trekking across a steep part of a slope covered in snow, we decided it was time to call it quits. Turns out, the trail that the racers were on was the way we should’ve gone. Those super athletes…always confusing the hell out of the rest of us. There are few things as

disappointing as not being able to conquer a summit you’ve spent the last few hours looking at. However, that didn’t make the post-hike beer taste any less rewarding. And returning to our campsite was the warmest of welcomes. After a short time, that place felt more comfortable than the new Denver Mattress I’ve been sleeping on in recent weeks. With fresh dirt under my fingernails, hair compiled into one tangled knot and my feet and legs covered with mosquito bites, I felt right at home. We stayed an extra night. Though we had to move our campsite down to a lower area close to the water because the wind became unbearable at our original spot (which created another adventure all in itself that ended in finding a primo camp spot on the beach). The weekend, through its ups and downs, reminded me of the importance in seizing the moment. Even if we can’t always control the outcome of an adventure, we can always choose to take that adventure. And when we do, that is when we truly start to grow. Barbara Platts votes yes to adventure any day of the week…or at least on weekends…when all of her work is done. Reach her at bplatts.000@ gmail.com or on Twitter @BarbaraPlatts.

‘BIRD NERDS’

A group that keeps growing as birding awareness, curiosity and conservation spread throughout the Roaring Fork Valley by AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

It’s just after dawn and the stormy sky above Rock Bottom Ranch in Basalt has only now begun to brighten. Seven birders are standing along the Rio Grande Trail with the ACES Bird Club for its weekly Morning Birding gathering, clutching birding binoculars that hang from their necks. They are silent, their ears and eyes at high alert. “People love being

out at a special time of day watching nature doing its thing,” says Weiss or birding at Rock Bottom and in Aspen at Hallam Lake. “It’s like a well-kept secret out here. Everyone else is in bed and we out there as a pine mountain is feeding on grouse, a bear is swimming across Hallam Lake or baby sand piper chicks are foraging near the water. These

are really special encounters in nature, and you feel like you just had this incredible moment.” Today, these morning birders are just seven of the 51 million bird-watchers in the United States

From osprey to a golden eagle to a red-tailed hawk, the opportunities to see wild birds abound in the Roaring Fork Valley.

who contribute approximately 36 million dollars to the U.S. economy annually.

“Birds are the most watchable form of wildlife,” says Weiss. “You are always seeing birds and we enjoy trying to identify them. It keeps you in touch with your place and the time of year. You begin to notice when the first hummingbird zooms by in spring, or when the swallows are back. It is an endless learning opportunity, and also a humbling and exciting thing to do.” Birding as a hobby is growing and seeing a new breed of enthusiast. Athletes and naturalists — who already find themselves outside — are finding new sport in identifying birds. Christy Mahon, ACES development director and modest “outdoor enthusiast,” who most recently climbed and skied all of Colorado’s 100 tallest peaks, with husband Ted and friend and professional skier Chris Davenport, is a recently developed “bird nerd,” first introduced to the study of birding through the Tuesday morning ACES Bird Club. “I thought I was paying attention to a lot of things when I was outdoors, but birding heightens your awareness,” she says. “You are

suddenly seeing things you’ve never seen before and you just can’t stop. My new hashtag is: #alwaysbebirding.” Now, while mountaineering or on her morning runs, which last from one to three hours (yes, you read that correctly) she incorporates finding and identifying birds through sight or sound, her eyes to the sky searching for hawks and Great Blue Herons, often using two apps on her phone, — iBird West and MerlinBirdID — for quick confirmation. “When I’m running, I hear or see a bird and find myself running off the trail and into the brush following the birds,” she says. “It definitely slows down my runs.” Awareness of birds and conservation of the animals and their shrinking habitat is something that brings Mary Harris, president of the Roaring Fork Audubon Society, out every day. She explains that overall the number of birds is declining due to loss of habitat, cat kills, (up to 4 billion in North America

BE A BIRD NERD

ACES Bird Club meets every Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. in summer, and monthly in winter. Meetings begin with birding at Hallam Lake and then to birding hotspots such as Northstar Preserve, Marolt Open Space or Lower Sunnyside Trail. The third Tuesday of each month ACES Bird Club meets at Rock Bottom Ranch in Basalt. “Birding downvalley offers a lot more diversity of species as you get lower in elevation,” says Weiss.

SUPERSTAR BIRDS

Black swifts, which Audubon calls “North America’s Most Mysterious Birds,” happen to like Colorado. According to Mary Harris, above, these birds prefer specific habitats with cave-like conditions, and many breed behind waterfalls. Researchers have found breeding groups in Ouray, at Hanging Lake, in Redstone and other small pockets. “They are hard to track down because they are difficult to reach populations, and as soon as they fledge, the young fly directly to the Amazon of Brazil where they winter,” she says.

every year), window collisions (up to 1 billion each year in the U.S.) and even windmills inappropriately placed. But resident birds and those that make it here during their annual migration from as far away as South America are vital to the health of our forests and larger ecosystem. “I want people to know how important our native birds are,” she says. “These birds that fly this horrendous voyage, thousands of miles over mountains and oceans, get here just as our forests are blooming — and so are the bugs they eat. It’s this whole crew of migrant workers who have arrived, free of charge; the day crew and the night crew. They work 24/7 on grooming duty, pollinating and cleaning our forests of insects. Without them our forest will die. It’s a black and white issue, and an integral part of our survival.” All birds, from the smallest chickadee that weights the same as three paperclips to our migrating raptors that patrol the fields, have important roles in balancing the ecosystem, she notes. “Our raptors are one of the apex species like wolves and sharks that contribute to a healthy system,” says Harris. On a recent morning at Hallam Lake, Weiss spotted a turkey vulture, Cooper’s hawk, and an osprey with 14-inch trout. As a way to introduce the Roaring Fork Valley and, in particular, children, to the raptor’s place in the food chain, and to learn about their vision and speed, ACES has been hosting the annual Raptor Fair, which took place in early July and attracted more than 500 visitors. (The next Raptor Fair at ACES takes place July 3, 2016.) The fair utilizes ACES resident golden eagle, red-tailed hawk

and great horned owl. Additional raptors include permanently injured birds from Nature’s Educators, a nonprofit educational organization based in Aurora. Devin Paszek, executive director of Nature’s Educators, loves the power and beauty of the area’s raptors such as the kestral, eagles, and owls, even if these may be some of the harder birds to spot in the wild. “Great horned owls are amazing animals, and you have many in the Roaring Fork Valley,” says Paszek. “Think of them at dusk as they sit in tree, move their heads back forth so they can hear from ears on the side of their heads. They have silent flight, and flutings that baffle the sound that blow through their feathers on their wings, and 500 pounds of pressure in their feet. They are like ninjas. You never hear or see an owl coming.” Throughout the winter, ACES hosts the popular Owl Walks, where kids and adults can walk the grounds around Rock Bottom Ranch to hear and possibly see owls in their natural settings. Even these single nights of education can bring awareness and interest into birding. “That’s what ACES is all about,” says Mahon. “We provide these experiences so the next time you hear about forests and ecosystems being destroyed and you might ask, ‘What about all those birds in there,’ and you might use less, or vote differently. That’s our ethos. When a person feels it for themselves, that’s when you create change.” Harris sees more and more interest from novice birders, students and outdoor enthusiasts such as Mahon. It is an approachable hobby open to all regardless of age or athletic ability. All you need to be a birder, Harris says, is a pair of birding binoculars and bird book, of which she recommends the “standbys” such as National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, and for beginners, Silbey’s Guide to Birds of Western United States. “It’s interesting because our valley is more recreation-oriented than it is introspective, but all of a sudden, in the last couple of years, people really want to know what’s out there,” she says. “There is more awareness and people are now talking more about our bird populations and identifying some of our valley’s 244 regularly occurring birds. Many are just realizing that they can open their eyes and ears to different sights and sounds. There are even 9 year olds in the valley who want to start birding.” ACES offers Morning Birding every Tuesday morning in summer, and monthly in winter. Meetings begin with birding at Hallam Lake and

ACES’ resident Great Horned Owl.

BETTER ART FAIR BUYING THROUGH THE CURATE APP TWO YEARS AGO at the National Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art in Chicago, Cari Sacks ran into a common problem for collectors. That problem bred a solution, in the new Curate app. At the massive annual fall fair on Navy Pier, Sacks — a part-time Aspenite based in Chicago — saw a piece she wanted to buy, but wasn’t sure if it would fit on the wall in her Highland Park home where she envisioned it. She called her sister, a photographer, and asked her to Photoshop a digital picture of the work into a photo of the wall. But that process would take too long in the high-paced retail atmosphere of an art fair. She walked away without the painting but with the germ of the concept for Curate, a smartphone and tablet app that allows collectors to input room dimensions and virtually place art on their walls. “I kept thinking, ‘There should be a way to do this. There should be an app for this,’” Sacks told me recently on the patio at Victoria’s Espresso. “There are so many art fairs now, this must be a common problem. … I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and it’s a drag. You eyeball it and you’re in the moment and you say ‘I’ll make it work.’ Then you get it home and you can’t.” Sacks brought the idea to Chicago area digital developers and, after a year of research and beta testing, Curate launched in September. The free app allows users to virtually place art in their homes without leaving a gallery or a booth at fairs like the Downtown Aspen Art Festival (July 25 and 26) and ArtAspen (Aug. 13 to 16) or at the big upcoming auction events at the Aspen Art Museum (July 31) and Anderson Ranch (Aug. 1). “If you take pictures of your walls before you come to an art show, this streamlines the entire experience for the patron and the seller,” Sacks says. The result is an intuitive application (I tested it out to hang a postcard alongside the haphazardly hung art and album covers on my office wall). It begins with a simple tutorial video. You’re asked to select favorite art

styles. Then you add rooms, photos of walls and plug-in dimensions. After that, you can select artwork from galleries across the U.S. that have their inventories on the app, or you can photograph a piece with its dimensions (rectangle or oval only). Using a little virtual paintbrush, you can cover up whatever is currently on the wall. From there, with a tap of your finger, you can virtually hang the artwork and decide where to put it. “I wanted it to be really intuitive,” Sacks says. “I wanted it to be something that would really help people. What’s great about it is that the scale is right.” It’s been downloaded by 6,000 people so far. One local shop – Casterline Goodman Gallery – currently has its inventory on Curate. Sacks’ revenue stream for the app is coming from the galleries, who pay to have their collections on the app (after a free three-month trial). The highest of highend art buyers, for the most part, have their own art consultants who will know what will work and where in a client’s home. Curate is made for collectors who don’t have that luxury (and who, age-wise, tend to be more likely app users anyway). “The people who use this are the ones that are shopping at galleries and art fairs, making mid-level to entry-level purchases, who don’t want to make mistakes,” says Sacks, “who don’t want to bring something home and say, ‘Oh my God it doesn’t fit on my

wall, now I need to sell it.’” When Curate was ready to go live, Sacks’ development team told her that they could tweak the algorithm to make it work for sculpture and three-dimensional objects, too. That’s

the next step for the app. If that works, it could be a game-changer, not only for collecting art, but for arranging furniture, allowing users to virtually situate couches and beds and tables without the legwork. atravers@aspentimes.com

William observes of Bridger, “Though he was as ignorant of book learning as the day he was born, he possessed all the accomplishments needed west of the Mississippi.” Burke vividly conveys the complex interactions between French and American trappers, the Crow, the
