POPULAR MUSIC HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS are celebrating the New Year with a two-night run at Belly Up Aspen. The longrunning ’80s hit-makers play the club Dec. 30 and 31, making their local debut after 36 years as a band. “I’ve played in Aspen, skiing, but I’ve never played music in Aspen,” Lewis says with a laugh. “It’s one of like four towns in the world we haven’t played.” Formed in the Bay Area in 1979, the band went on to record a string of inescapable ear-wormy songs, among them “Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Stuck With You,” “I Want a New Drug,” “Hip to Be Square,” “Do You Believe in Love,” “Workin’ for a Livin’” and “The Power of Love.” With Lewis singing and playing harmonica, the band’s live shows boast a mix of pop, R&B and soul. The band isn’t on tour these days, but they’ve been in the studio writing and recording new music — some of which Lewis says they’ll showcase at the Aspen gigs — and are taking a break from the sessions to play here. Lewis says the intimate confines of the Galena Street club are his ideal venue. “Going to a big baseball stadium to see the Rolling Stones? You couldn’t pay me to do that. Belly Up, 400 people, that’s where I want to see a show, and play a show.” The Dec. 30 show begins at 9 p.m. while the New Year’s Eve set is scheduled for 9:30. Tickets are available at the Belly Up box office and at www. bellyupaspen.com. Pick up the Dec. 30 Aspen Times for more of our interview with Lewis.

Huey Lewis and the News will play a two-night run at Belly Up Aspen Dec. 30 and 31.

CURRENTEVENTS MUSICAL THEATER

Aspen celebrates the New Year with two rounds of fireworks Dec. 31. In Snowmass Village, holiday festivities include fireworks and a torchlight parade on Dec. 29.

Husband and wife Gary and Meredith Daniel, longtime cast members of the Crystal Palace, will perform in two Christmas shows at the Wheeler Opera House.

THIS TIME MIGHT really be the last time for Aspen’s own musical revue. Since the beloved Crystal Palace dinner theater closed its doors in 2008, its legendary players have performed occasionally around town and on Christmas at the Wheeler Opera House. The satirical cabaret’s cast is planning this year’s two-show run at the Wheeler Dec. 25 to be its last. The shows are scheduled for 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Wheeler box office and www.aspenshowtix.com Read the Dec. 25 Aspen Times for more on the Crystal Palace players hanging it up.

FIREWORKS ONE NEW YEAR’S EVE fireworks display at midnight isn’t enough for Aspen. Like the truffle oil on our French fries, we just don’t know when to stop. There are two fireworks shows over Aspen Mountain on Dec. 31 — one at 8 p.m. and another at midnight. And in Snowmass Village, the festivities on Dec. 29 include a luminous torchlight parade down the slopes at 5:30 p.m. and a fireworks show at 6:30 p.m. Adults, and kids age 8 and up, are invited to take part in the torch parade. VOX POP What do you want for Christmas this year?

with JOHN COLSON

Why still bullying, blustering over Cuba? AS 2014 DRAWS to a troublesome close, one bright note deserves celebration — the United States may finally be ready to back off of its 54-year-old, remarkably unsuccessful effort to bully our tiny neighbor, Cuba, into doing what American politicians and expatriate Cubans wanted it to do. Thanks to presidents Barack Obama in the U.S. and Raul Castro in Cuba, the two countries appear poised to normalize relations that went into the toilet two years after Raul’s brother, Fidel Castro, led a ragtag army in the overthrow of a disgusting and U.S.-backed dictator, Fulgencio Batista. Batista, you may recall, was a military strongman who took part in the overthrow of an earlier dictator back in 1933. Considered a moderately progressive guy at that time, Batista installed himself as the head of the military and the power behind a string of puppet governments and, in 1940, was elected president of the country. He left Cuba for a while when his term expired, to live in the U.S., then returned to run for a second presidential term in 1952. When it looked like he would lose that election, he staged another military coup that stopped the election in its tracks and put him back in charge. Having abandoned any progressive philosophies he once held, Batista cozied up to the Mafia in the 1950s, turning Cuba into an international playground dominated by vice, corruption and censorship of the media, while most of his people plunged into severe poverty under the monopolized economy run by wealthy sugar barons. Batista also embarked on a campaign of widespread repression and violence against Cuban citizens, the kind of terrorist tactics that despots always resort to when they hope to keep their citizens from throwing them out. And this is the guy we, the United States, were supporting when Fidel Castro, building on student unrest and widespread demands for reform starting in 1953, put together the socialist-leaning, five-year guerrilla war that became the Cuban Revolution and ousted Batista and his ilk. When Castro, hoping for friendly relations, turned to the U.S. for help, we rebuffed him and basically forced him to turn to the only other superpower then striding the global stage, the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR, which promised to buy Cuban sugar (its only exportable product) in return for Cuban loyalty in international politics. So Cuba became a piece on the chessboard of the Cold War, was proclaimed to be an enemy of U.S.

interests, and in 1960 was slapped with a U.S.-led trade embargo that many other nations now ignore. The U.S. government, along with expat-Cubans (many of whom had been wealthy patrons of the Batista regime), mounted an invasion at the Bay of Pigs in 1961 under President John F. Kennedy. Since then, our government has done everything it can to destabilize Cuba’s government, economy and social stability. Castro, I think understandably, moved to tighten his grip on the country, feared that the U.S. would keep trying to either kill him or oust him, and resultingly turned into something almost as bad as Batista in terms of basic human rights and freedoms. In my eyes, though, we had a hand in the gestation of the repressive and anti-democratic tendencies the Castro government developed over the years, and any U.S. punishment of Cuba is hypocritical and disastrous for the Cuban people. And it’s about time we gave it up. I was in Cuba once, over Christmas in 1978, with a group of student journalists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that took a 10-day trip to check out the state of the revolution at the time. Some people there still strongly supported the ideals of the revolution while criticizing the repressive controls on speech, political activity and the economy, which they largely blamed on U.S. policies toward their country. Others, convinced that all Americans lived rich, happy and carefree lives, wanted Castro ousted and Cuba to become a U.S. satellite, similar to Puerto Rico. The country also had free education and medical care for all (including one of our group who became gravely ill), a populace that was friendly beyond belief, and a beautiful nation of rugged mountains and fertile plains that ought to have been a treasure trove of agricultural products aimed at international markets. For some reason, an uncomfortable number of politicians get hysterical over Cuba, demanding that its leaders kowtow to our way of life and our corporate-style economy, and somehow view it as a litmus test for being a true American. I mean, it’s not like we have a clean record with regard to dictators and despots the world over, which we have supported shamelessly as long as they declared themselves against Communism and the USSR. It’s time to let Cuba breathe.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Silver Bell ski run, as seen in the 1950s, lies atop the Silver Bell mining claim.

SILVER BELLS, SOON IT WILL BE CHRISTMAS DAY When you are a child you learn distinctions such as the difference

between table salt and road salt, and you discover that the association you have with a word lies in the context in which you learn and use it. One of those distinctions from my childhood involved Silver Bell and a triple context of the words. When I was in elementary school, Christmas meant skiing. In those days before snow making, Christmas skiing was often limited to the top of Aspen Mountain. Even when there was enough snow to ski to the bottom of the mountain, conditions deteriorated as you descended. Like most children, I favored One and Two Leaf and Silver Bell runs. I did laps on Silver Bell from Sundeck to the bottom of No. 3 (now Ajax Express). With my light body I did not gain speed easily so it thrilled me to tuck from top to bottom like a downhill racer. In those days, even at Christmas, the runs were sparsely populated so I didn’t scare too many beginners as I flew along. Christmastime also meant Christmas carols. My favorite was “Silver Bells.” I am sure that was not a coincidence. I am quite sure that the “s” on the end of the carol title did not distinguish the song from

10

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

the run. In my mind, they were one and the same. Bing Crosby and Carol Richards first recorded “Silver Bells” in 1950. Many folks of a certain age

The two “bells” became one for me because I would mentally sing the song as I skied down the run. I didn’t sing it on Dipsy Doodle, just on Silver Bell.

CHRISTMAS TIME ALSO MEANT CHRISTMAS CAROLS. MY FAVORITE WAS “SILVER BELLS.” I AM SURE THAT WAS NOT A COINCIDENCE. I AM QUITE SURE THAT THE ‘S’ ON THE END OF THE CAROL TITLE DID NOT DISTINGUISH THE SONG FROM THE RUN. IN MY MIND, THEY WERE ONE AND THE SAME. also remember the Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell version sung in a 1951 movie “Lemon Drop Kid.” By the time I heard the song it had become a Christmas classic. A Wikipedia entry says the writers of the song derived the idea from the silver bells of the Salvation Army, Santa Claus bells or a silver bell they had in their office. That really narrows it down to three possibilities.

D e c e m b e r 25 - D e c e m b e r 3 1, 20 14

As a descendant of a silvermining family I was also aware of the third context: the Silver Bell mining claim. There were actually two, Silver Bell and Silver Bell No. 2, side-by-side claims. Those claims were early discoveries in Aspen and early ore producers. They were considered part of the Tourtelotte mining district and the miners lived in the Tourtelotte camp. The

claims high above the camp to the east were described as being on Bell Mountain, actually the ridge that extends above what we refer to now as Bell Mountain. The Silver Bell claims had both tunnels and shafts. One claim had three shafts. Silver was discovered where it followed an outcropping of rock heavy with iron. Captain Thatcher, a major partner in the claims, became one of Aspen’s better-known and loved citizens. By 1889 the claims produced 35 tons of ore per day. There is another distinction, one that I did not have to hold in my mind as a child, a Silver Belle claim. Belle was a common mining claim name. In the Aspen area there is the Eva Belle, Bonnie Belle and Sara Belle, just to name a few. The Silver Belle claim was near the town of Crystal. Singing a line of Silver Bells as you ski the run over the Silver Bell claim will enhance your holiday: “In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas; children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile.” Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. WINDOW SHOPPING

1926 ASPEN

ON DEC. 16, 1926, the Aspen Daily Times described the preparations that retailers were making for Christmas, specifically the various window displays designed to entice holiday shoppers. As the article noted, “What is more pleasing than wearables for Christmas gifts? Evidently this is what the People’s Store and Kobeys thought in fixing their Christmas window displays. Of course Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without its usual Christmas tree trimming and package supplies. Cooper’s have a beautiful window display of these articles. Have you seen Santa? If not take a glimpse at Wilkes store window display and you will see him with his toyland for the kiddies. You will also see the large Christmas tree which is especially beautiful at night with its various colored lights. Tomkins Hardware Company store this year has the best display window they have had in years. There is the window for the kiddies showing sleds, automobiles and everything to please. The window for the grownups of silverware, cut glass, manicure sets, etc., is also arranged very attractively. Just take a look at the wonderful Christmas display of the Aspen Drug Company store and you will agree it is very fine. First of all the beautiful Christmas tree with its candles to remind you of the Yuletide season and then the assortment of candy, perfume atomizers, manicuring sets, toilet sets, kodaks and stationary. Both young and old will have their fill of Christmas goodies this year.” The photo above shows the front window of the Kobey Shoe and Clothing store on Hyman Avenue. GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

LISTEN UP; WEARABLE BLUETOOTH BUTTON THE GROWING PRODUCT category of “wearables” includes fitness-tracking bracelets, stickon medical gauges, biometric watches and things like Google Glass. This month, I tested a wearable from VSN Mobil. The V.ALRT product looks like a poker chip and weighs 0.3 ounces. It is designed to be worn on a necklace, around your wrist or clipped on a belt. Essentially, the V.ALRT is a button that via Bluetooth can stay in sync with your phone. Its main function is to provide a wireless link to the V.ALRT app, which has tools to alert people in an emergency. Press and hold the face of the button and it triggers a blaring alarm sound on your phone and also begins a procedure to alert the three people you designate via a custom text message. V.ALRT can also dial a predetermined phone number automatically in this mode. In my test, it was configured to dial my wife’s number, and once initiated it automatically turned on my iPhone’s speaker mode so I could talk to her hands-free. VSN Mobil’s main markets for the product are kids, independent-living elderly and people with medical conditions. The V.ALRT offers a connection at the push of a button with kids’ parents or other preprogrammed phone numbers.

For active and outdoorsy people, the product is most appropriate as a safety tool. If you are on a run or bike ride and are injured (and can’t reach your phone) the button gives a link. Another scenario is for personal safety. With a phone out of reach, for instance in your pocket or a backpack, the V.ALRT button offers a quick way to initiate communication if you feel threatened. Finally, the button has an accelerometer built-in. It can be set to sense when you take a hard fall. If you crash on a bike ride the device will sense the motion and initiate the emergency texts and call. It sends your GPS location, too, so someone can find you. I tested all of these situations, simulating the bike crash with a purposeful fall on the ground. It sensed the motion and worked with the app to go into its contact protocol. You can cancel the procedure in a false alarm by pressing a button on the phone screen. Caveats? You need a smartphone that has Bluetooth 4.0 LE as well as data service for the V.ALRT to work. (This is many new phones.) It works only in cellphone range, so don’t expect to use this device in the wilderness. Also, the setup does not support 911 calls; it will only text or call regular phone numbers. The V.ALRT costs $59.99 and requires no monthly or annual service fee. It does not require charging; the device runs off a standard watch battery, which the brand cites will last for up to a year of use in the city, at home or on a dark path at night. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

A WINE LOVER’S HOLIDAY WISH VINTNER WEEKENDS AT TRIPLE CREEK RANCH

ALL I WANT for Christmas is… A visit to Montana’s Triple Creek Ranch for a Vintners Wine Weekend. Travel connoisseurs know Triple Creek Ranch, as it regularly ranks in the top tier of luxury publications “best of ” lists. In fact, this year the TCR, as we’ll call it, was named the “World’s Best Hotel” by Travel KELLY J. + Leisure magazine. HAYES Pretty impressive, but hardly surprising. Visionary proprietors Craig and Barbara Barrett have created an alpine oasis whose raison d’être is providing luxuriously comfortable accommodations and gourmet dining in an incomparably beautiful location in Montana’s Bitterroot Mountains. But the reason why I covet a trip to TCR as my Christmas gift is that each year the Ranch hosts a series of amazing wine weekends that allow guests to not just imbibe special wines, but also get to know celebrated vintners on an up-closeand-personal level. The winemakers and guests dine side-by-side, take amazing hikes, go on trail rides and snowmobile trips, and generally mingle in an environment that encourages everyone to get to know each other better. Get a winemaker on a horse, and he or she opens up like they never would in their own vineyard or winery. After all, they are on vacation too. In 2014, the visiting winemakers included Cyril Chappellet, Ehren Jordan of Failla, and Oregon’s Lynn Penner-Ash — a prestigious and gregarious group of winemakers indeed. I was fortunate to be included on a snowy May weekend for a gathering with one of my personal winemaking heroes, Merry Edwards. Merry and her husband, Ken, work in concert to run the eponymous Merry Edwards brand in Sonoma County, California, and this epic weekend the two wore the hats of both guest and host as they participated with us in a pair of unforgettable wine — and dining — events.

Merry Edwards may be California’s most significant female winemaker. She began her career in 1977 at Matanzas Creek and, in 1996, bought 24 acres of Russian River Valley land, planting it to pinot noir. In the ensuing decades she has used those vines to make the stunning Meredith Estate Pinot Noirs that have come to define the quality of the Russian River Appellation. Today, she and her wines are legendary, and she has been both a James Beard Awardwinner for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional and a 2013 inductee in the Vintners Hall of Fame in St. Helena, California. Edwards also has worked with grapes grown at other Russian River Vineyards, like Olivet Lane and the Klopp Ranch, to make wines that are perfect expressions of both her winemaking style and the terroir where those grapes are grown. Some of these wines, as well as the blends made from them in concert with her Meredith Estate grapes, are amongst the most sought-after California Pinot Noirs ever made. The Merry Edwards Vintner Weekend, like all of the vintner events at Triple Creek Ranch, was focused around a special wine dinner prepared by TCR’s acclaimed executive chef, Jacob Leatherman. Here, in the exquisite glass-walled, log-framed dining room, guests indulged in a multicourse meal, paired with wine from the visiting winemaker who brought the best from their cellar for the meal — intimate, understated and unforgettable. The highlight of our time with Merry, though, was a tasting in the rooftop lounge of the “Flight of Angels” Pinot Noir Series wines from her 2006 through 2011 vintages, as well as a vertical from the same vintages of the Meredith Estate wines. With precision, Merry took us through the individual complexities of each vintage and the vinification practices that were used to make the wines. It was a look into the mind and the life of a winemaker. But even more revealing was the time spent tasting the Angel Wing

wines that Merry makes to honor the memory of her son, Warren, who passed during the harvest of 2006. As we tasted through the wines, Merry explained that they were made as an expression of a mother’s love in liquid form. While we all gazed into our glasses of pinot noir, Merry emotionally told us about her lost son who “left on

the wing of an angel.” There was not a dry eye in the silent room when she finished and raised a glass, asking us to make a toast in celebration of the lives of those we love. A moment to remember forever. This year, TCR has already scheduled Vintner weekends with Chateau Montelena on Feb. 19-22, and with Oregon’s Et Fille wines on Feb. 26-March 1, with others to come. The events will be held in conjunction with the TCR cooking school, which will give guests an opportunity to work with the kitchen staff in the preparation of the paired meals. Yes, after an afternoon of dog sledding or Nordic skiing in the Bitteroots, you can go back to your luxurious cabin, take a Jacuzzi and then stroll into a world-class kitchen and learn culinary techniques from master chefs before settling down with the winemakers from Chateau Montelena. Now you know why I want what I want for Christmas. Happy Holidays. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-tobe-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. UNDER THE INFLUENCE MERRY EDWARDS 2012 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR While Merry’s reputation has been made with single vineyard wines, an excellent way to break into “Merry’s World” is with this blend from six different vineyards, all in the Russian River Valley. It is a place she loves and you can be assured that the selection of grapes for this wine was as meticulous as those in the much higher priced singe-vineyard releases. Dark, rich fruit flavor profiles, highlighted by the aromas of plums, blackberry and currents hit the nose and the palate. But the joy is in the weight of the wine in the mouth. Full on the tongue, long on the finish. Taste this and you’ll be hooked and will want to try the full

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

NOODLES FOR NEW YEAR’S

RING IN 2015 WITH SOME SPICY COMFORT FOOD LET’S BE HONEST about New Year’s Eve. Once you’ve reached a certain age, celebrating stops being about partying and starts being all about hunkering down with a movie and comfort food on the couch. There is no shame in admitting this. After all, most of us spend most of the year wishing life would slow down enough to have just one evening now and again to do nothing and veg with a movie. So why not embrace this desire as a fine way to close out the year?

My comfort food of choice this year? Fried udon noodles with red peppers and shrimp, all slathered in a spicy peanut sauce. It’s simple. It’s filling. It’s addictive and satisfying in a totally carby-fatty way that will have you planning your resolutions for the next day. J.M. Hirsch is the food editor for The Associated Press. He blogs at www.LunchBoxBlues.com. Email him at jhirsch@ap.org

MAKE IT FRIED UDON NOODLES WITH SHRIMP AND SPICY PEANUT SAUCE Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4 1 cup natural peanut butter 1-inch chunk fresh ginger 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup water 1 clove garlic 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Hot sauce, to taste 4 tablespoons sesame oil, divided 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced 2 large red bell peppers, cored and thinly sliced 8-ounce package udon noodles 1 pound shelled raw shrimp, patted dry 1/2 cup chopped peanuts 2 scallions, green and white parts, thinly sliced

Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. While the water heats, in a blender combine the peanut butter, ginger, vinegar, soy sauce, water, garlic and black pepper. Blend until smooth. The peanut sauce should be thick, but pourable. If the sauce is too thick, add a couple tablespoons of additional water and blend again. Taste, then add hot sauce to your desired heat preference, blending again. Set aside. In a large skillet over mediumhigh, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Add the onion and peppers, then cook until just tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Reserve the skillet. Add the udon noodles to the boiling water and cook for 2 minutes, or until just barely cooked. The noodles should still be a bit firm. While the noodles cook, return the skillet to medium-high heat and

add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. Drain the noodles well and add them to the hot skillet. Stirfry the noodles for 2 minutes. Add the shrimp to the skillet and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the shrimp are just pink, about 5 minutes. Return the onion and peppers to the skillet and toss until heated. Remove the skillet from the heat, then pour in a liberal amount of peanut sauce (use as much or as little as you prefer), using tongs to toss the ingredients until well coated. Divide between serving plates, then top with peanuts and scallions. GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

MAKE IT PASSION FRUIT BELLINI

1 cup unsweetened passion fruit pulp, thawed 2 tablespoons maraschino liqueur Ice 750-mililiter bottle prosecco, chilled Maraschino cherries or fresh raspberries, to garnish

PERFECT PROSECCO ‘Tis the season for bubbles, and I do love a good glass of Champagne or prosecco. But with a new year approaching — and dreams of all things new attached to it — I’ve begun seeking out new ways to enjoy this holiday standard. My “research” included tasting all types of concoctions, and there are few left on my list to try. But since the days are quickly slipping by, I offer you two excellent options for holiday imbibing. The first, which includes a spicy kick, is excellent when served with puff pastry tarts spread with brie (or any soft cheese) mixed with chopped fresh basil, then topped with persimmons that have been brushed with honey, then broiled until

In a large cocktail shaker, combine the passion fruit pulp (it can be found in the frozen foods section, often with the Goya brand products) and maraschino liqueur. Stir to combine. Add a handful of ice, then shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Strain into the wine glasses, dividing it evenly. Stir each glass gently, then top each with Prosecco. Add a cherry or raspberry to each glass. Serve immediately.

SPICED PROSECCO

Pour the Sorel into a sparkling wine flute, then top with prosecco and an orange twist. Stir gently and serve immediately.

VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | HERE & THERE

by AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

TIME TRAVELS

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014 AND WHAT YOU SHOULD BOOK NOW FOR 2015 1. Best Family Destination: Disney Cruise. Not for the faint of heart, but a great combination of Disney thrills for the kids and plenty of adult entertainment to keep the parents happy, too. Visiting Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, is worth the cruise alone. 2. Best AdultsOnly Destination: The Society Islands. Who hasn’t dreamed AMIEE WHITE of sailing through BEAZLEY the islands of French Polynesia? Spend a week on a small ship like those offered by Windstar Cruises and get into small harbors and less explored areas of the Societies and the Tuamotus beginning in 2015. 3. Best Ski Destination: Irwin, Crested Butte. The best cat-skiing operation in Colorado is not cheap, but for $550 you can access a seat to the 1,000-plus private acres outside of Crested Butte that attracts on average 600 inches of snow per year. Cat seats open to those staying at Scarp Ridge Lodge first; any leftovers are doled out with 24 hours’ notice. 4. Best Food and Wine

Destination: Bordeaux, France. What can I say? The French know best when it comes to food and wine. Buildings in this “Petit Paris” have recently been cleaned revealing the beauty beneath hundreds of years of grime. But it’s the wine and food that shine most of all here. From small producers to the most famous chateaus in the world, each is a gem worth exploring and tasting. 5. Best Emerging Destination: Kelowna, British Columbia. Located about three hours from Vancouver, this town is the Boulder of 30 years ago: a small, historic city center surrounded by incredible mountains for hiking, biking and rock climbing. Skiing is nearby. But the real kicker is the 100-mile-long Lake Okanagan. In the heat of summer there are standup paddlers, kayakers and motor boat enthusiasts enjoying the water after emerging from the woods. This lake also makes the valley a great spot to grow grapes. With more than 300 wineries in the area, Mission Hill Winery is a standout white and pinot noir producer that we will definitely be hearing more from in the years to come. 6. Best Beach Destination: Esperanza, Cabo, Mexico. Only a

few hours from Denver, Cabo is a quick and satisfying destination for Aspenites, and there is no other property as beautiful and relaxing as Esperanza. Every room has a deck overlooking the Pacific with a private outdoor hot tub, double doors that open to the warm outdoors and an infinity edge pool where attendants deliver popsicles and shoulder and foot massages. Easy to get to and as close to heaven on earth as I found all year long. 7. Best New Hotel: Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney World. The newest and the largest Four Seasons in the resort’s global collection, the Four Seasons Orlando is located within Walt Disney World – the only non-Disney-owned property to ever open up on that sacred ground. This resort was made for multigenerational travel in mind, perfect for grandparents, parents and definitely the kids. There is Explorer Island — a huge pool, lazy river and water park on the property, free Kids for All Seasons (should parents want to golf the new Tom

Fazio-designed course) and The Hideout – complete with pinball machines, X-Box, pool, computers and any other gadget imaginable for the tween-teen set. dreams THE STUFF THAT ARE MADE OF by KELLY J. HAYES photos by AUBREE DALLAS

ASPEN IS MANY THINGS. An amazing ski town. A haven for intellectuals. A wonderful wine community. But over the past couple of decades, it has developed into a shopper’s paradise. An exalted place in the pantheon of desired destinations for those who want the best of the best. Local emporiums and the crème de la crème of the world’s most aspirational brands sit cheek by jowl, lining the streets in the long shadows of Ajax Mountain. For those in need of retail therapy, Aspen is a must-stop. Especially at Christmas. With the holiday season in full swing and the shop shelves stocked to their tippy tops, we thought it would be fun to cruise the streets and gaze, enviously, at the spectacle of some of Aspen’s most appealing

Here then, is a look at the stuff that dreams are made of:

A ‘GATSBY-ESQUE’ GLOW

As a boy in the Bronx, Ralph Lipschitz knew what it was like to be on the outside looking in. So when his fledging tie business morphed into POLO, one of America’s most iconic brands, Ralph Lauren made sure to reflect the dreams of his clientele in his store windows. The windows at the flagship shop on 72nd Street in Manhattan make you “want” not just the things, but the lifestyle that goes with them. The Aspen store mirrors that approach. In Christmases past, there have been epic displays of RLX gear in skiing motifs and climbing scenes that resemble movie sets. This year, with the DOW hovering around 18,000, the windows went a bit Gatsby-esque. It looks like parties trump skiing this winter as off-white gowns and slacks ensembles dazzle and drape the rail-thin mannequins. RALPH LAUREN • 501 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-5147

BUNNY BRIGADE

“MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY WINDOWS IN TOWN BELONG TO PERFORMANCE SKI. THE SIMPLICITY, TIMELESSNESS AND FRESHNESS OF THE BEAUTIFUL WREATHS ON THEIR WINDOWS PUT ME IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT EVERY TIME I WALK BY.” – LAURA KAPLAN, HOLIDAY AFICIONADO

Think rabbits and Easter may come to mind. But this year the bunnies at the McHugh Gallery are celebrating Christmas. A bright-white, big, beautiful bunny sits in the window, sporting 19th-century mercury glass Christmas ornament earrings that hang on satin ribbons from his ample ears. This meticulously crafted copper sculpture is covered with 60 to 80 coats of shiny lacquer and represents thousands of hours of handwork. He (or is it she?) would be a welcome addition to any menagerie. Rounding out the theme is a series of paintings by renowned New York artist Hunt Slonem that also celebrates the joy of the Hare. Hop to it. McHUGH GALLERY 607 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-4214

ALL DRESSED UP

What does the perfectly dressed Aspen man look like? Why like any given mannequin in Pitkin County Dry Goods front window, of course. Dana Laughren’s (see sidebar, opposite page) window assemblages combine the ethos and elegance of what the Aspen man could/ should/would wear if he had the design sense of the folks at PCDG. If fact, Dana so gets it that, rather than reflecting the Aspen man, her windows define him. This year’s Christmas window features a casually dressed mannequin with a green bough of a Christmas tree sticking out of the top of the neck where a head should be. Simple, clean and green. Something to which we all can aspire. PITKIN COUNTY DRY GOODS 520 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-1681

COOL CASHMERE

Cashmere is the fabric of the gods and this town has any number of stores that can cover deities — local and otherwise. Most bear Italian names, and while all will clothe you in cloth that feels as smooth as 3 inches of fresh snow on top of just groomed corduroy (for the righ price), I have always favored Loro Piana. Understated, clean and elegant, just looking at the way the cashmere falls makes me feel rich. And, if I were rich, my LP indulgence would be the box of cashmere “MYSocks” that sit in the window near the Paradise Bakery. One box. A dozen socks. Assorted colors. I may have no need for anything else ever again. LORO PIANA • 316 S. Galena St., 970-544-0502

IN TUNE

“NOTHING SAYS WARMTH OF SPIRIT QUITE LIKE LOOKING THROUGH THE BIG BAY DOORS OF MY CHARMING LITTLE CITY’S FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE BRIGHT RED LIGHTS ON THE OUTSIDE PILLARS BEG PASSERSBY TO LOOK IN AT THE FLEET OF SANTA SUIT RED FIRE TRUCKS WASHED IN THE GLOW OF EVENING LIGHTING. THE FIRE STATION IS SUCH A VISIBLE REMINDER OF THE GOODNESS IN HUMANITY.” – SAMANTHA JOHNSTON, ASPEN TIMES GENERAL MANAGER

While some windows showcase “things,” the subterranean window at Hamilton Sports showcases work. The labor that goes into putting a diamondsharp edge and a silk-smooth waxy finish onto a pair of skis, make that 100 pairs of skis, each evening. In the small alcove on the Durant Street side of the shop is a window where you can watch the ski techs turn out perfection each night. At this window you not only see the craftsmanship, you smell it as the hot wax fills the air. It is the smell of speed. Order tickets line the window of the shop and you can see the sparks fly as the edges get their grip. HAMILTON SPORTS • 520 E. Durant

HOW IT’S DONE A conversation with Pitkin County Dry Goods window designer Dana Laughren

KH: Where does the inspiration for your windows come from? DL: Inspiration comes from everywhere! What’s happening in fashion, color, media, what’s happening locally and what colors and styles are trending. I read trend reports and visual and retail merchandising journals. I create Pinterest boards about color, pattern, window ideas and fashion. I love collecting props and can find things everywhere — hardware stores are great for ideas!

KH: Are Christmas windows especially challenging? DL: The Christmas window definitely has the most preparation and planning involved. We start early every year but it seems like we never decide until the fall. I take notes and pictures throughout the year when I travel for inspiration and sketch out a rough design for my boss, David Fleisher, to approve. One of the craziest installs was when I

collected broken mirrors from a local glass company for months and then smashed and glued pieces to boards to look like ice and covered the whole floor with it. It looked amazing with these glass penguins, but my hands were pretty cut up! This year I really wanted to have a different look from all the urban, big-city shops that have opened and show that we are an Aspen, locally owned store. The theme this year is “rustic” and I carried it through to our Kraft paper packaging and gift options like candles in mason jars, etc. We’re kind of known for doing a mannequin a few times a year that is a “dress” made out of something unexpected. One of my favorites was a mannequin I made out of bicycle parts. KH: So do you dig doing this? DL: I love my job! It’s definitely my zen “happy place” when the creative juices are flowing. I love when a customer buys an outfit, head to toe, because they like how it looked in the window. I feel lucky that I get to create beautiful environments and I’m allowed a lot of creative freedom.

GET THRIFTY

Here lie the ghosts of Christmases past. Yes, in one of the great bargain hunter destinations in all the world you’ll find a plethora of unused, or lightly used, gowns, ski outfits, men’s jackets and, of course, ties. Just peer at the windows. In most places this would be a town’s top shop. And the most beautiful thing about The Thrift Shop of Aspen’s windows is it is stuff we all can afford from the other places in this story that may be, well, a bit beyond reach. Oh, and the profits go to support the community rather than a hedge fund. Window shop here, but definitely go inside as well. THE THRIFT SHOP OF ASPEN 422 E. Hopkins Ave., 970-925-3121

COWBOY UP

No window in Aspen says “Come on in and make yourself comfortable pardner” like Kemo Sabe. I think it’s the hats that hang on the walls and are visible from the windows that draw folks in. But once inside they can’t help but fall for the buckles, belts and boots. While it may seem to be a folksy Western store, make no mistake, these are Aspen Cowboys we are talking about. In contrast to some other places that cater to the “all hat no-cattle crowd,” most of the customers of Kemo Sabe have plenty of cattle. If you get my drift. They just need a great hat.

“I DROVE AROUND THE OTHER NIGHT AND I WAS LOOKING AT THE WINDOWS IN TOWN AND I THOUGHT STEAKHOUSE 316 LOOKED SO GREAT! LIKE THE JEROME, IT IS AN OLD VICTORIAN BUILDING AND IT WAS LIT SO WELL.” – TONY DILUCIA, HOTEL JEROME GENERAL MANAGER

FULL-ON BLIZZARD

Toro, Toro, Toro. I’m not talking sushi, but rather the new Blizzard Skis (with the Bull on the skins) that are front and center in the window of Miller Sports. Bill Miller and Ted Davenport have built a beauty of a ski shop in the old Performance Ski Shop space and the juxtaposition between this store and the new Performance Ski, which is now next door in the old Pomeroy Sports (got that?), gives us a block chock full of the finest ski gear and clothing known to man. Those Blizzard skis, which have been great on the snow but garish on the eyes the last couple of years, have received a stylish redesign and I am truly bullish on the Bull. MILLER SPORTS • 408 S. TO SERVE AND PROTECT

The most impressive windows in all of Aspen are the behemoths that front the Aspen Fire Department on Hopkins. The glass doors that protect the gleaming trucks from the elements rise to let the engines emerge with a roar whenever danger is in our midst. They are a perfect marriage of form following function, and if you have ever seen the department leap into action when the great whistle blows you know what the adrenaline feels like. Every kid wants, at some time, to be a firefighter. And taking the young ones to gaze through the windows at the pumper trucks, to tour the fire museum, and to pay homage at the slab of the World Trade Center structure in front of the firehouse is an Aspen-only experience. Take a peak inside. THE ASPEN FIRE DEPARTMENT 420 E. Hopkins Ave.

WESTERN VIEW

There are plenty of places to buy great art in this Valley, but few windows say so much in such a small space as the one next to Little Annie’s at Wind River Gallery. The perfectly lit D. Michael Thomas sculpture of a cowboy on horseback is a still life of a still moment. The rider, perched on a pony, appears to be gazing back over his shoulder into the past, perhaps contemplating a time before there were art museums, chairlifts, and yes, even Christmas windows, in this the Valley of the Utes. The surrounding works by the icons of the Western art movement include paintings from Mark Keathley and Gene Speck that are colorful and evocative of the American West as it existed a hundred-plus years ago. WIND RIVER GALLERY 505 E. Hyman Ave., 970-925-3919

GOOD EATS AND TREATS

In the center of town is this wonderful bakery offering delicious cookies and treats, and the green benches in front provide a great spot to enjoy a delightful, steaming hot chocolate or coffee drink. However, what wins you over to visit this bakery is the holiday window outside. Around the window there is an exceptional display of green garland, and wrapping the posts are big red bows with pinecones hanging all around. The icicles are a natural addition strewn across the top of the sills. The window draws your eye to the scrumptious treats. PARADISE BAKERY & CAFÉ 320 S. Galena St., 970-925-7585 – by Kelley Francis, an Aspen Middle School sixth-grader who is mentoring at The Aspen Times

“LITTLE ANNIE’S. I LOVE THE SIMPLE GREEN WREATHS WITH RED BOWS — THE RED MATCHES THE RED OF THE FACADE, WINDOW TRIM AND ANNIE’S SIGN — AGAINST THE BUILDING’S NATURAL WOOD, ALL HIGHLIGHTED BY TINY, WARM, WHITE HOLIDAY LIGHTS. IT SUGGESTS TRADITION, HOLIDAY, FAMILY AND WELCOME WHILE BEING UNDERSTATED AND QUAINT.” – STEVE SKADRON, MAYOR OF ASPEN

SMOKED OUT

The “smoked” glass window that adorns the front entrance to the newly remodeled Silverpeak cannabis shop serves a dual purpose. First, in accordance with state law, it conceals the contents of the shop from the underaged. Secondly, like the magician who hides his hand before the big reveal, it sets a stage for amazement. If Colorado is ground zero for the cannabis revolution in America, then Silverpeak is beyond, actually below, ground zero. This new dispensary will change the way the world looks at how it procures pot. I believe Silverpeak will be the most talked about place in town in 2015. It looks more like a jewelry shop than a “consumer marijuana dispensary.” Tasteful lighting, baby cannabis plants on display, exquisite woodwork. I knew this was coming, but I had no idea that THIS was coming. You gotta’ take a Peak behind the window. SILVERPEAK • 520 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-4372

A TASTE OF THE ALPS

There are tons of luxury mountain lifestyle stores in Aspen. But as far as authenticity is concerned, none can hold a candle to the high-alpine empire built by Dave and Renie Gorsuch. The couple have been partners in life and business since they first met at the Junior National Ski Championships in Jackson Hole when they were just 14 years old, and today they are as timeless as their windows. Gorsuch shops can be found in Aspen, Snowmass, Vail and beyond, each filled with items of envy. But it is the windows of the flagship Copper Avenue home furnishings store that beckon with comfort each holiday season. The display of lights, the snow globes, the cozy throw blankets and antler chandeliers all conjure images of the Alps. Or the Rockies. GORSUCH ON THE MALL 419 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-7576

“WE LOVE THE RED ONION WINDOWS — FROM THE INSIDE! THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE SITTING ON THE INSIDE WITH A DRINK IN HAND WATCHING THE CLOTHES FROM EVERY WINDOW IN ASPEN, AS WELL AS THOSE FROM RODEO DRIVE AND FIFTH AVENUE, WALK BY ON LIVE MODELS.” – JEFF HANLE, ASPEN SKIING CO. GRAM SLATON: THE EXIT INTERVIEW

WHEELER DIRECTOR LOOKS BACK ON NINE YEARS AT THE HELM OF THE ICONIC ASPEN THEATER FOR NEARLY A DECADE, Gram Slaton ran the Wheeler Opera House — Aspen’s historic downtown theater. But as 2014 comes to a close, Slaton is on the road back to his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, where he will direct the Piedmont Council for the Arts. Slaton’s nine years in arguably the most prominent job in Aspen’s arts scene included founding the MountanSummit film festival and the Aspen Laff Festival, which has kept comedy alive at the Wheeler in the wake of the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival leaving town. He and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates founded the 7908 Songwriters Festival, which didn’t last, but which Slaton says may get a new lease on life in Virginia. Along with that programming legacy, he leaves a better building behind (though not a bigger one, as he had hoped). He oversaw more than $8 million in improvements to the city-owned historic building, including replacing a the venue’s balcony and cramped seating, which has knees all over town thanking him. Slaton says the deaths of former Aspen Mayor Helen Klanderud and Aspen Times arts editor Stewart Oksenhorn, and his own brush with mortality, encouraged him to make the move, along with his roots back east. I sat down with Slaton in his basement office at the Wheeler during has last week here to discuss the past, present and future of both Gram Slaton and the Wheeler. ANDREW TRAVERS: What made you decide to go? GRAM SLATON: A lot of what informed my decision that it was time to leave, other than the fact that it had been nine years — which is a long time for an executive director — was a series of personal events in my life. Starting with the fact that I learned I had kidney cancer in May 2013 and

48

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

almost died. That was my big wakeup call that you can’t keep postponing your life and saying, ‘I’ll do that next year,’ because there may not be one. Then Helen Klanderud died [in 2013] and that was like snapping the lifeline with the town. That was a big loss for me. Then Stewy’s suicide [in February]. Helen’s death was pointing me at the door, Stewy’s death was turning me around and pointing me at it, and then when [stand-up comedian and Aspenite] David Brenner died two months after Stewy, that was the last push toward the door. All my era’s connections to the town were now gone. And I had almost gone, too, therefore, life was tapping me on the shoulder and saying, ‘What do you want to do?’ The answer was, ‘Uncomfortable as it’s going to be, I need to be moving on.’ AT: Are you getting nostalgic as you pack up?

GS: A funny thing about both me and my significant other is that we don’t really do that. We don’t look backwards. I think it just feels like this chapter is completing. I know this is a place I can go back to. It’s a place I’ll come back to ski for a week in the winter and that’s good. AT: The new gig brings you home. What was the attraction to go back to a place you haven’t lived since college? GS: Going back to Charlottesville allows me to deal with some family business that I’ve been putting off for years now. My mom has dementia. She first started showing signs 15 years ago. Four years ago I had to get her out of the house and institutionalize her. So that’s a big piece of it. The fact that there’s a home there waiting for me is a piece of it. The challenge of the new job, running an arts council, so I can work in public policy and things like that —

that I really found in the last number of years I really liked doing here — that’s exciting. But there’s also that thought that at the end of March it’s really warm there and I can plant a garden, there are songbirds that will sing all night long. When I was home four years ago, working outside on the house, strangers would come up and say, ‘Are you moving in?’ And I thought, ‘Why would I do that. Then I started thinking, ‘Well, that’s not a bad place. So I’ve been making peace with my hometown. It’s a place I can go back to without a family history looming over me, necessarily. Now I can come to Charlottesville on my own terms, make my mark in a positive way, and hopefully finish out my career. After college, I’d visit. But it wasn’t really until 2010 that I was spending extended chunks of tie there, going eyeball to eyeball with it, reconciling my history with it.

Wheeler Opera House executive director Gram Slaton, right, with filmmaker Tom Shadyac. Shadyac screened his documentary, “I Am,” at the Wheeler’s MountainSummit festival in 2010.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

AT: What have you had to reconcile? GS: You have to understand, my first grade class was the first class that was integrated in the state of Virginia. So I grew up in the civil rights era, and every spring there were riots. There were bomb threats. There was a lot of discomfort in being part of that process. You cannot sit on the sidelines in that kind of culture, you’re either in one camp or another. So for me the best thing to do was to extract myself from it. Now, there are still other problems in the town and they still have a fairly big racial issue to deal with. Virginia is a hotbed of conservatism in some ways again. Some of the old ghosts are rising out of the past, but I’m better equipped to deal with it now. AT: What are your proudest moments at the Wheeler? GS: When I want to be facetious I say that my greatest achievement was getting rid of Bentley’s [laughs]. But that actually is a good integer for everything we did — it’s certainly the most visible — in taking a place that’s served it’s time and replacing it with something [Justice Snow’s] that fits with what the Wheeler is now. When I came in, they wanted to reorganize the place, update it, and get the Wheeler expansion up and

going. And to repoint the ship after a number of years where it wasn’t quite what people wanted it to be. So those early years were easy in that you could get a lot done. The Aspen City Council then, led by Helen, was motivated to get a lot done. So we got a lot done in the first couple years. Then after the recession, after the fall of 2008 happened, everything got suspended for awhile and we refocused on our programming, starting the three festivals. Two of those have survived and I think they can continue to survive. I’ve already gotten John Oates hooked up with some people in Charlottesville restart [a songwriters festival]. So nothing is wasted. There’s redoing these offices. Doing the balcony project. The residency with Jean-Luc Ponty and Jon Anderson. Going skiing with David Brenner and just cracking up. I think it’s been a good nine years for me, I hope it has for the town.

as you hoped. Do you think it will? GS: We still need to do the expansion. We just flat-out do. And if we’re not going to do that then we need to have some kind of sister facility in town. It’s not going to be the powerhouse building, but if City Hall moves, it could be City Hall — that’s an old armory. If you’ve seen pictures of it from the 1950s — it would be a perfect space. The Wheeler really only has a season that runs 14 weeks. We miss the entire summer [because of the Aspen Music Festival and School takes over the theater in the summer months]. So if you’re not going to Theatre Aspen, you’re not going to the Music Tent, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money to go the Belly Up, you don’t have a lot of options. In the next five years, though, the key thing is renewing the real estate transfer tax [which funds the Wheeler]. If you don’t do that, it’s all moot.

AT: I imagine Brenner was a good skiing partner. Are there other relationships with artists that formed, or moments backstage, that stand out to you? GS: There’s a lot of them. Most of them I can’t say out loud.

AT: Programming-wise, have you identified a Wheeler brand of artist or event? GS: [Belly Up owner] Michael Goldberg and I have long agreed that you go to the Belly Up for the party and you come to the Wheeler for the concert.

AT: The expansion hasn’t happened

You come here to have a different kind of great time than you do there, and one’s not better than the other. I expect the new person will have a new spin, which I hope will be younger and hipper and bring in that audience that’s been elusive under my booking. AT: What kind of advice do you offer to that person? GS: Executive directors tend to have really big egos. And there’s nothing more humbling than a big hero idea of ‘I’m going to book this name and its going to be a sell out and they’re going to carry me around town on a sedan chair’ and then you can come up so short in this town. You can bring the greatest artist that ever was born and you can draw thin air. Is it because of the day of the week? The week in the month? How the wind blew that day? Eventually you realize you’ll just have some hits and misses and some surprises and you go forward. atravers@aspentimes.com

LEFT: Slaton with comedian David Brenner on stage at the Wheeler at the 2012 Aspen Laff Festival. Slaton says a series of recent deaths, including Brenner’s earlier this year, contributed to his decision to leave Aspen for his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. ABOVE: Slaton in the Wheeler Opera House lobby. Over Slaton’s nine-year tenure, the building was upgraded and refurbished in a series of projects. But his ambitious plan to expand the size of the building stalled when it came before the Aspen City Council.

G D WEEK

Bella

THE

Meet our sweet Bella girl. Although Bella had a rough start and suffered neglect and abuse, she is full of love and wants nothing more than to be in a loving home forever. Her foster mom said she is an absolute angel and a real cuddle bunny. She said she is so gentle and once she feels safe is very affectionate. Bella loves to go for walks and hikes but still needs to stay on a leash as some things still startle her. She needs a home with a confident owner to show her she is safe and the world is a good place! Bella is good on the leash and doesn’t pull unless she gets scared. She looks like a shepherd mix of some sort, weighs about 50 pounds and we are guessing her to be about 3 years old. She is house trained, has a super soft coat, is fine when left alone - not destructive at all. She loves other dogs and is playful. We do not know about cats. Bella is now spayed, current on her vaccinations, de-wormed, nails trimmed and micro chipped. If you are interested, please first fill out an Adoption Application on www.luckydayrescue.org and then call Kelley on 970-379-4606. LUCKY DAY ANIMAL RESCUE OF COLORADO

BOOK REVIEW

‘FOURTH OF JULY CREEK’ “FOURTH OF JULY CREEK,” the robust debut of Portland-based novelist Smith Henderson, follows the life of Pete Snow, a state social worker in the fictional town of Tenmile, Montana. At work, Snow is steady and skillful, able to calm frightened children and parse messy domestic situations. But after hours, he’s an alcoholic prone to unbridled benders, alienated from his own land-baron dad and fugitive brother. He has lived in an isolated cabin ever since he left his cheating wife. One day in the early 1980s, a disheveled child named Benjamin wanders into the town, west of Glacier National Park. Pete buys Benjamin new clothes and medicine for giardia and scurvy and returns him to the remote spot the boy calls home. Benjamin’s father, Jeremiah, a wild-bearded, scripture-quoting, shotgun-toting survivalist, collects by JOEL FAGLIANO / edited by WILL SHORTZ

NOTEWORTHY his son while threatening Pete with a “fatal wrath.” But Pete refuses to give up on this odd family, gradually befriending them as you might a pair of skittish wild animals. Meanwhile, after Pete’s hardpartying wife moves to Texas, their 13-year-old daughter, Rachel, runs away. Pete, who blames himself for neglecting his daughter, takes off on a cross-country mission to rescue her. As he tells his estranged wife, “I take kids away from people like us.” We learn what’s happening to Rachel through question-and-answer sessions interspersed throughout the novel, in which she details all she endures as she drifts. Fourth of July Creek is rife with painfully honest, hard-won insights about kids out on the street or caught up in the system; the author once worked at a group home for juveniles in Missoula, and his experience brings

a unique authenticity to the story. At times, the novel is so bleak that only the precision and beauty of Henderson’s language keeps you from flinching away: “Medallions from the quaking aspen lay about in a golden hoard, blowing up in parade confetti as he drove through them.” But keep reading, and you’ll find yourself caring about the wounded people who stagger through this book too much to ever want to leave them. It seems as if Henderson felt the same way — he ends the book in midsentence, the fate of one character not fully revealed. Expect the hosannas for this rich, heartbreaking novel to continue for years to come.
