2012-13 season

brings change in Snowmass Village

When it comes to the ultimate skiing adventure for the entire family, it’s hard to beat Snowmass. And according to the ratings for the 2012-13 season by various magazines and reader surveys throughout the country, there’s a reason why the mountain ranks so high. As a way to keep the mountain up to par with locals and guests alike, improvements are always made to make the experience that much more enjoyable, and this year is no exception. Here’s some new stuff you’ll see on the mountain this year:

Early Winter In Snowmass 2012-2013

DID YOU KNOW? Snowmass Village has been receiving accolades for the 2012-13 season from snowboarding and skiing magazines to reader survey praises. The following is a rundown on Snowmass’ rankings for the 2012-13 season to date: #1 in the Transworld Snowboarding Resort Poll — Aspen/Snowmass as a whole took the top spot. To make it as one of the 10 best, a resort has to rank high in both the park and pipe categories, as well as in other crucial areas such as nightlife, snowfall, vibe, lodging, food, etc. And, Transworld readers gave Snowmass ski area No. 1 for terrain parks. #8 resort in the West according to Ski Magazine’s reader survey and rated:

Elk Camp Restaurant The new restaurant at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola was just finished in time for this ski season, and with it comes some new on-mountain activities. Elk Camp Restaurant will be open Friday nights starting Dec. 28 and will offer sledding and ice skating too.

Burnt Mountain Expansion The Aspen Skiing Co. worked this year to thin trees on Burnt Mountain east of Long Shot, adding 230 acres to its skiing terrain. The expansion boosts Snowmass’ terrain to 3,362 acres, the

In town Changes have been happening in town as well. BASE VILLAGE has finally found an owner/developer once more. The deal, transferring ownership once again to Related Cos., closed in late September, and some minor improvements were completed in time for this ski season. Use the Arrival Center to drop off skiers by car and to access lifts from the Base Village bus stop. The WESTIN and WILDWOOD are newly renovated hotels on the Mall. Whether you’re staying in one or not, there are many amenities to check out, including a slopeside bar and new hotel restaurants. The lobby of the Westin Snowmass Resort.

Top 10 cross-country and snowshoe trails in Aspen/Snowmass 1| Owl Creek Owl Creek is a 9-mile intermediate crosscountry and snowshoeing trail, with most of the trail good for beginning with occasional hills that add some difficulty. This scenic trail connects Aspen and Snowmass Village, hugging the south side of the Roaring Fork and Owl Creek valleys. Most skiers use this trail as a casual tour with a lunch break and light touring gear. The easiest and most popular stretch of trail runs from West Buttermilk Road to the Snowmass CrossCountry Center. How to get there: From Snowmass Village — Snowmass Village Trail or Snowmass Cross-Country Center. Follow signs. From West Buttermilk Road — Drive through the main Buttermilk parking lot from Highway 82 to West Buttermilk Road at the far right corner of the lot. The Owl Creek Trail crosses 1.4 miles up the road, by a small parking area on the right. From Tiehack — Experienced skiers can ski from the base of Tiehack up along the right side of the alpine trail to the Oregon Trail toward and across Main Buttermilk. From Aspen Golf Course — Access Tiehack through the James E. Moore Trail and new Tiehack Nordic Bridge.

2| The Terminator The Terminator is an advanced 3-mile loop that winds around the Two Creeks development. It is an exciting trail for advanced cross-country skiers. The loop also can be used to access the Owl Creek Trail,

which is an intermediate trail. How to get there: From Snowmass Village — Snowmass Village Trail or Snowmass Cross-Country Center. Follow signs.

3| James E. Moore Trail The James E. Moore Trail is a 2-mile beginner trail. It’s a short loop and connecting trail to the high school, Iselin and Owl Creek trails. The loop is a favorite because of its winding hills. The trail and loop wind through open sage areas that are home to deer, fox and other wildlife. How to get there: Take the roundabout pedestrian underpass. Or, from the parking lot at the Aspen Golf Course, cross under Highway 82 on foot and go 200 feet to the left (east). Free bus service is available.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are one of the few uses permitted on this flat, open meadow property close to the Roaring Fork River. How to get there: Go 1.5 miles east of Aspen on Highway 82 and look for the small parking area on the right.
