Dear Guest

WINTER 2012-2013 GUNILLA R. ASHER Co-Manager/ Advertising Director

Welcome to aSpen! Whether this is your first time to our valley or the hundredth, we hope you enjoy your stay. This winter in Aspen, many of your old favorites are back: X Games, the free concert series, skiing, snowshoeing and spas. However, if you’re returning to town you’ll also notice some changes. The Hotel Jerome recently underwent a complete renovation just before this season, as did the Westin – formerly the Silvertree — and Wildwood in Snowmass. New restaurants and retailers have also cropped up this year, and the Aspen Skiing Co. has expanded its terrain on the Snowmass ski area. Within these pages, you will find suggestions on how to explore the great outdoors as well as discover everything that our local towns have to offer, from fine art to dining and more. We hope this guide will be useful during your stay, and that you and yours find – or re-discover – what makes Aspen so special. Relax, be safe, and enjoy your stay, Jill Beathard Editor

shrines

The Shrines: unique, mystical, and hidden By daVid wOOd

everyone knows abouT The greaT skiing and riding we have in aspen/snowmass. buT noT everyone knows abouT someThing else we have ThaT no oTher ski area has: The mysTical shrines hidden in The Trees on all four of our ski mounTains. pole pines hide sanctuaries dedicated to musicians, locals, buckaroos, soiled doves, toys and cartoon characters. “The shrines of Aspen Mountain set it apart from virtually all other ski areas. They add mystique, culture and local flavor to a mountain that’s already rich with mining and skiing lore,” the Aspen Times wrote.

FOR ABOUT TWO DECADES,

locals have been ducking into their favorite hiding spots on the mountain and nailing pictures, license plates, wind chimes and other paraphernalia to tree trunks in honor of their heroes. The trees and lodge

18

Winter in aspen // 2012 * 2013

Many of the Shrines are dedicated to musicians or have a musical connection: Shrines to The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Garcia (started by ski instructor Paul Wade in the winter of 199596), Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Buffet, John Denver (his

shrine on Aspen Mountain was started by Maddy Lieb and Lisa Bolerjack in 1997), Liberace (no longer in existence), Stevie Ray Vaughan (no longer in existence), and Michael Houser of the band Widespread Panic. Others have a sports theme: Auto racing (Dale Earnhardt, no longer in existence), football (Denver Broncos and New England Patriots), baseball, (Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees), golf (The Golf Shrine [most recently visited in March 2011 by the former Ambassador to Denmark], Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones), hockey, and bowling.

Many shrines are to locals, or persons with a local in The laTe connection: Adam Dennis (one of the most recent shrines, created in April 2011), Chris THE ELVIS PRESLEY Polk, Christian Daniel SHRINE ON ASPEN Streuli, Christine E. MOUNTAIN WAS Hardy, Chuck Severy/ MOST LIKELY THE Todd Olson (one shrine FIRST SHRINE to both men), Eric Smith,

1970s

Hunter S. Thompson, John Nicoletta, Kiera Elizabeth Tongish (no longer in existence), Nicholas Blake Davidson, Raoul Wille, Robert D. Kesselring (“Señor Kess”), Steve Butts, Suzie W., and Tom Cole. “Visit the shrines on Aspen Mountain! Can you find the John Denver shrine hidden in the trees? You won’t find them on any trail map, but hidden in the trees are tributes to Elvis, Marilyn, Jerry and other deceased luminaries. Ask a patroller or local to point them out … [or] … Ask a

mountain ambassador for a tour or take off on your own and explore the glades of Aspen Mountain in search of the infamous shrines. Elvis, Jerry Garcia, Marilyn Monroe and Jimi Hendrix, are merely a few among others who are immortalized in these hidden gems tucked in the trees,” totes the Aspen Skiing Company website. The Elvis Presley Shrine on Aspen Mountain was most likely the first shrine, created in the late 1970’s. A plaque in one of the Silver Queen gondola cars at Aspen

states that “Elvis Presley Boulevard started out with a street sign from Memphis that was nailed to a tree on a traverse. Fans soon began adding Elvis paraphernalia to the tree—pictures, Mardi Gras beads, a Tennessee license plate and more. The King’s birthday (January 8) is celebrated at the shrine each year.” After the Elvis Presley Shrine was created, more shrines started to appear on Aspen Mountain, and then they spread to the other three mountains. There are no maps showing shrine locations. When visitors ask, the local custom and protocol is to only give general hints. The shrines of Aspen/Snowmass are special. Find them, look at them, enjoy them, and take your photographs. But please respect them and those to whom they are dedicated, and leave them as you found them. Now get out and ski/ride this season and see how many of them you can find.

daVid wOOd David Wood (AspenShrines@ aol.com) is the author of the best-selling book about the Aspen shrines, Sanctuaries in the Snow—The Shrines and Memorials of Aspen/ Snowmass. He donates all of his profits from book sales to charity, The Roaring Fork Valley Scholarship Fund. The book can be purchased in Snowmass Village at Snowmass Sports, the Stew Pot, Sundance Liquor and Gifts, and the Village Market, as well as at various locations in Aspen. a publication of the aspen times

Yet, venturing into the backcountry does not have to be that adventurous. A snowshoe hike out Richmond Ridge could be as calm and serene as a morning cup of coffee. What might surprise you, however, is that the dangers are close to being the same. There are some basic lessons one should know before going into the backcountry. Here are a few tips to think about, whether this is your first time out of bounds, or your 100th.

AVALANCHES HAVE KILLED MORE PEOPLE IN COLORADO THAN ANY OTHER NATURAL HAZARD

• COmmuniCaTe When going into the backcountry, always alert someone to your plans. Include a time when you will check-in with them. • neVer GO alOne Oftentimes, a partner will be your best chance at a rescue should an avalanche slide, or an injury would prevent you from rescuing yourself.

• BrinG supplies Actually, bring enough for a day, even if you just plan on being gone an hour. An extra layer, food, water are the basics. A shovel, probe and beacon are also recommended. If you plan on skiing, then don’t leave any of these pieces at home. • CheCk wiTh eXperTs Talk to a ski patroller when you’re in bounds. While their jobs are to create safety inbounds, they are very familiar with snow conditions and will alert you if it is too dangerous. Also, check in with the Colorado 20

Aspen has a lot to offer kids and families, beyond just skiing. Here are some ideas of things to do with your kids: ICE SKATING

The LEWIS ICE ARENA inside the Aspen Recreation Center is open regularly for public skating; call ahead at 970-544-4100 to check the schedule. There’s also a small rink associated with CP Burger in Aspen. In Snowmass, RAYBURN’S POND on the ski area is now open on Friday nights, or, if you have your own skates, try out the rink at SNOWMASS TOWN PARK for free.

The most popular hill is the WHOA, NELLY! behind the Aspen Recreation Center. The Meadows area on Snowmass will also be open for sledding on Friday nights this season.

PARKS

You can still play at the park in the winter. WAGNER PARK, PARK YELLOW BRICK, BRICK TRIANGLE PARK and HERRON PARK in Aspen all have playgrounds. Do that and a cup of hot chocolate somewhere and you’ve killed a whole afternoon!

Cross-country and Snowshoe Trails in Aspen & Snowmass The alpine offerings of Aspen/Snowmass are so plentiful that sometimes visitors forget to explore the miles and miles of groomed nordic trails that we like to refer to as our “fifth mountain. What makes our nordic skiing special is that you can access the groomed trails just about from anywhere and access is free. Well, free from having to buy a trail pass, as most nordic areas around the world require. Many of these trails are equally suitable for snowshoeing. The following pages list our top 10 favorite trails in the area for crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing, as well as suggestions for backcountry trips.

28

Winter in aspen // 2012 * 2013

1 Owl Creek

Owl Creek is a 9-mile intermediate crosscountry, snowshoeing trail, with most of the trail being good for beginning with occasional hills that add some difficulty. This scenic trail connects Aspen and Snowmass Village, hugging the south side of the Roaring Fork and Owl Creek valleys. Most skiers use this trail as a casual tour with a lunch break and light touring gear. The easiest and most popular stretch of trail runs from the West Buttermilk Road to the Snowmass Cross-Country Center. How to get there: Snowmass Village — Snowmass Village Trail or Snowmass Cross-Country Center. Follow signs. West Buttermilk Road — Drive through the main Buttermilk parking lot from Highway 82 to West Buttermilk Road at the far right corner of the lot. The Owl Creek Trail crosses 1.4 miles up the road, by a small parking area on the right. Tiehack — Experienced skiers can ski from the base of Tiehack up along the right side of the alpine trail to the Oregon Trail toward and across Main Buttermilk. Aspen Golf Course — Access Tiehack though the James E. Moore Trail and new Tiehack Nordic Bridge.

2 The Terminator

The Terminator is an advanced 3-mile loop that winds around the Two Creeks development. It is an exciting trail for advanced cross-country skiers. The loop also can be used to access the Owl Creek Trail, which is an intermediate trail.. How to get there: Snowmass Village — Snowmass Village Trail or Snowmass Cross-Country Center. Follow signs.

3 James E. Moore Trail

The James E. Moore Trail is a 2-mile beginner trail. It’s a short loop and connecting trail to the high school, Iselin and Owl Creek trails. The loop is a favorite because of its winding hills. The trail and loop wind through open sage areas that are home to deer, fox and other wildlife. How to get there: Take the roundabout pedestrian underpass. Or, from the parking lot at the Aspen Golf Course, cross under Highway 82 on foot and go 200 feet to the left (east). Free bus service is available.

4 Aspen Golf Course and Cross Country Center The Aspen Cross-Country Center is at the Aspen Golf Course, 1 mile west of Aspen off Highway 82. This made the list because it offers ski lessons, tours, a retail shop,

rentals, a lounge, lockers, snacks and videos. It also offers beginner trails, free bus service and easy access to other trails. How to get there: Free bus service is available.

5 Bernese BOuleVard

Bernese Boulevard is a great trail for dog owners and their furry friends because it is located on the Aspen Golf Course and is a scenic route around the perimeter. It’s a 2-mile route. How to get there: Free bus service.

6 nOrTh sTar naTure preserVe lOOp

The Benedict Trail is an intermediate trail 1.5 miles from Ute Avenue to North Star Nature Preserve. This section of trail serves as a connection from the east end of Aspen to the preserve. It is narrow, winding and mostly in the trees. However, a small portion of this trail is subject to avalanche danger. How to get there: Follow Ute Avenue to the Ute Trail parking lot, then up a public access 100 yards to where the trail crosses. Free bus service also is available.

9 marOOn Creek Trails

If you’re looking for a light, easy trail that’s a little over a mile, try the North Star Nature Preserve Loop. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are one of the few uses permitted on this flat, open meadow property close to the Roaring Fork River. How to get there: Go 1.5 miles east of Aspen on Highway 82 and look for the small parking area on the right.

7 riO Grande Trail

8 BenediCT Trail

The Rio Grande Trail is a popular walking, skiing and snowshoeing trail that leads you up to 20 miles one way from Aspen to Basalt. The trail is mostly flat that meanders through the quiet woods and open sage areas. Because this trail is easy, marked and not groomed, it offers the opportunity to have an adventure in a more primitive setting. How to get there: The eastern end starts behind the Aspen Post Office. Free bus service is available.

The Maroon Creek Trails are accessed from the Tiehack Nordic Bridge or from the Buttermilk base area. Adventurers also can reach these trails from the Aspen Golf Course via Maroon Creek Trail. The scenic section of track can sometimes be short of snow and has steep turns and terrain. It is for advanced skiers only. How to get there: Pick up the tracks beyond the Panda Peak lift at the Buttermilk base area.

10 VillaGe way

Village Way is an access route between Snowmass Village and the Snowmass Club Golf Course tracks. The trail is fairly steep, making the route somewhat challenging in either direction. This is an intermediate trail, and dogs are allowed, so it’s a nice trail for pet owners. How to get there: From Snowmass Village, reach the bottom of the Assay Hill Lift.

hut trips

Head for the backcountry on a hut trip If you’re looking for a great backcountry tour with friends and family and you’re looking for a place to stay overnight, take a backcountry guided hut trip tour with the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association.

34

Winter in aspen // 2012 * 2013

This will be an experience unlike any other, and the association will outfit you and prepare you for an adventure with no experience necessary because the guides are certified by the American Mountain Guides Association and trained to take you to the huts that are located in the White River National Forest. Take in spectacular views of the surrounding Aspen area and experience an aspect of Aspen not seen by many. The 10th Mountain manages a system of 29 backcountry huts in the Rocky Mountains, connected by 350 miles of suggested routes. These include a variety of huts, ranging from cabins within a few miles of a trailhead to backcountry shelters that are many miles from any other signs of civilization. The association offers opportunities for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing during the winter and mountain biking and hiking during the summer all while staying in safe, comfortable shelter (the huts).

To reach the Hunter Creek Trailhead, start in the town of Aspen. Follow Main Street in Aspen to Mill Street (the stoplight near the center of town, next to the Hotel Jerome). Turn north on Mill Street and drive a short distance down a hill, then across a bridge over the Roaring Fork River, about .25 miles. Bear left after the bridge and follow Red Mountain Road 1.2 miles to its second switchback. Just before the switchback, turn right and downhill on Hunter Creek Road. Drive .5 miles on Hunter Creek Road, then take a hard left on an unpaved driveway that leads up past a water tank 300 feet to a parking area. The actual trailhead is farther up the mountain but this is the parking lot.

For the Upper Hunter Creek parking area, follow Hunter Creek Road up Red Mountain and go northeast through the stone pillars continuing up Red Mountain Road for 0.6 mile to a threeway intersection. Take a very hard turn and continue 0.1 mile through two sharp switchbacks. This is private property. Please respect the homeowners. Do not enter private, marked driveways or cross the bridge.

How to get there: The simplest method is to walk back down the driveway to Hunter Creek Road, turn left through two stone gate posts marked “Private, and follow the paved Hunter Creek Road .25mile around a hairpin switchback to the well-signed Hunter Creek Trailhead on the right side of the road.

| lenadO Trailhead | Elevation: 8,640 feet 10th Mountain Map: Smuggler Mountain USGS Map: Aspen Lenado Trailhead is at an intersection 8 miles west of Aspen. It is located .8 mile west of the turn-off to Snowmass Village/Snowmass ski area. Travel north on Smith Way for .5 mile, cross the Roaring Fork River and continue to a three-way intersection. Turn left (north) at Upper River Road (County Road 17) and travel north for 1.5 miles to the sharp turn right (east) onto the Woody Creek Road, County Road 18. Go 8.4 miles through Lenado to the marked 10th Mountain winter hut parking area on the right. A sign and a chain with a lock marks the parking area. The combination for the lock on the chain is the same as the hut combination.

| Off The BeaTen paTh | The Grand Traverse, a 40-mile backcountry ski race from Crested Butte to Aspen, will take place for the 16th year on March 29. Local, national and international athletes race in teams of two and ski the route overnight in this extreme endurance competition. For more information, visit www.elkmountainstraverse.com.

Fishing During the quieter winter months, several rivers offer high-quality fishing entirely unique to this region. In fact, when the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission declared the 13 miles of the Roaring Fork River between Basalt and Carbondale as “Gold Medal Water,” that created the longest continuous section of Gold Medal Water in the state at 42 miles. The Roaring Fork and Colorado River systems offer everything from small water to big water, but we recommend checking with local guides first to enhance your fishing.

History

courteSy the ASPen hiStoricAl Society

THE

BeFore the FirSt mining ProSPectorS arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley in 1879 Pre-1879 the area had been used by and was home to the Ute Indians for more than 800 years. Though our knowledge of how the Utes lived during those centuries is limited their respect for the land remains a central tenet of their lives and beliefs.

UTES

Ute Indian summer camps are located throughout the Roaring Fork Valley; Ute Springs, near present day Glory Hole Park, near the Gondola at Ute and Original Streets, may have been a campsite. Colorado becomes a state in 1876. Custer and his troops are massacred at the Little Big Horn. Ute uprising at the White River Agency Ute Reservation, to be known as “The Meeker Massacre.”

ASPEN

in 1936 the FirSt glimmer oF hoPe for Aspen’s recovery arrived in the form of a 1893-1936 relatively new winter sport that would take advantage of the area’s abundant, light snow and dramatic terrain: skiing. The new potential “boom” would be put on hold with the onset of WWII a few years later.

REBOUNDS

MODERN ASPEN

with the end oF the wAr a fresh new outlook for Aspen emerged with the arrival in 1945 of Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. The prominent Chicago couple brought vision, culture, a love for the outdoors and financial backing with them and infused modern Aspen with the idea that this was a place where mind, body and spirit could flourish.

modern ASPen is built around the historic Aspen. In 1962, the city paved 16 downtown blocks and the first condominium was built. By 1963, all the streets were paved. Snowmass Ski Area opened in 1967 with 5 chairlifts, and lift tickets were $6.50. In the 80s, the Wheeler Opera House opened, and by the 90s, Aspen Skiing Company had more than 3,000 employees and 4,700 acres of skiable terrain.

in 1879 the FirSt ProSPectorS arrived in what would soon become Aspen and determined the area contained large deposits of silver ore. For the next 14 years Aspen’s fortunes rose as it eventually produced 1/6th of the nation’s and 1/16th of the world’s silver.

Music What to listen to this winter in Aspen by Stewart Oksenhorn a member of Fleet Foxes. Tillman says too much is made of his FF connection — he only appeared, playing drums and singing, on one of the band’s albums, and toured with them for a short while. (Of course, Fleet Foxes have only two albums, and the one Tillman

Academy Screenings

Dec. 25-Jan. 1, Wheeler

Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series has been around for two decades. But this year, with Harris Hall unavailable, the series moves to the Wheeler, for a cozier room and a more convenient location. (The docket of screenings is also shortened slightly, and the series is condensed from its customary two weeks to one.) No matter the venue, the Academy Screenings delivers something fresh out of the box: Films considered Oscar contenders, many of them special presentations, shown here weeks before they are widely released. Among the films to be shown this year are “Amour,” German director Michael Haneke’s French language story of 54

elderly love that earned top honors in Cannes; “Hyde Park on Hudson,” starring Bill Murray as Franklin Roosevelt during an affair with his cousin (Laura Linney); and “Silver Linings Playbook,” David O. Russell’s comic drama of an oddball Philadelphia family. The full program of approximately 16 titles will be announced Dec. 3. Father John Misty

fuzzy, otherworldly, reeking of the woods of the Pacific Northwest. It’s among the bestreviewed albums of the year. Bella Betts & the Little Stars Jan. 12, Wheeler When Aspen native Bella Betts left town, she was a little kid with a big interest in folk music. Betts, now a Boulder resident, is all grown up — 12, in fact, and on the petite side. But her musical abilities have sprouted enormously over the last few years, enough that Bella and her mandolin have made appearances with Chris Thile, Amos Lee and Sarah Jarosz. Her concert at the Wheeler — a free event on the Saturday night of Wintersköl — features her backing band, the Little Stars, and songs from her forthcoming debut album, tentatively titled “Lights Around a Curve.” Marco Benevento

contributed to was last year’s sensational “Helplessness Blues.”) Sure enough, Tillman has something else worthwhile to trumpet. His solo debut “Fear Fun,” released under the name Father John Misty, exists on a similar plane as Fleet Foxes — folky, dreamy,

Keyboardist Marco Benevento has played in the valley before, as a member of avant-groove combo Garage a Trois and of the Benevento/Russo Duo. But this is his first appearance under his own name (and as a jam guy, he should by all rights have performed here a whole bunch of times). Through a series of solo albums, including the new “TigerFace,” the 35year-old Benevento has carved a new niche built out of rock rhythms, improvisational jazz and electro sounds. Cyril Neville and Devon Allman, both part of royal

music families, have performed in the valley before. But not together. They team up in the Royal Southern Brotherhood, making its local debut Feb. 7 at PAC3. gil ShAhAm Feb. 5, Wheeler Yes, violinist Gil Shaham studied at the Aspen Music School, practically grew up in Aspen, and returns to perform most every summer. But this year the Aspen Music Festival’s Winter Music series moves to the Wheeler, and fans will get to see Shaham, and accompanist Akira Eguchi on piano, in a different setting. Shaham, well-versed in local traditions, should be able to make the most of the new venue. Also performing in the series are two more acts familiar to Aspen audiences: the Boulderbased Takács Quartet (Feb. 28), and pianist Conrad Tao (March 16), a former student in Aspen who gave one of the highlight performances here last summer. ASPen SAntA Fe BAllet

Feb. 15-16 and March 16

The program for Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s local show is newish: “Last,” commissioned by the ASFB from Alejandro Cerrudo, had its premiere last summer; “Return to a Strange Land,” by Jiri Kylián, is new to Aspen; and Trey McIntyre’s “Like a Samba” hasn’t been seen here since 2005. The really novel part is the absence of Seth DelGrasso, a founding member of the company who retired from the stage recently. These will be the first Aspen performances in ASFB’s 17 years without DelGrasso. The ASFB’s annual “Nutcracker” (Dec. 15-16) will again feature Norbert de la Cruz in the role of the Jester. De la Cruz broke out big-time as a choreographer this year

with the Aspen performances of his “Square None.” “the muSic iS you: A triBute to John denver”

The years have not been particularly kind to John Denver, either his music or his persona. All that could change with a tribute album featuring some truly hip musicians — Brandi Carlile, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Brett Dennen, Lucinda Williams and more — covering Denver’s songs. Truly enticing: rockers My Morning Jacket’s version of “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Admit it, you can’t wait. core PArty March 29-30,

The Skico’s annual early spring street throw-down gets a little wilder this year. Or at least longer — this year’s CORE Party runs two nights. March Fourth Marching Band, the costumed, stilt-walking troupe from Oregon, should thrive in the outdoor setting on March 29; the next night, it’s Grouplove, an indie rock quintet from New York. Pedrito mArtinez

March 29-30, JAS Café Downstairs@the Nell

A New Yorker piece on Havana-born, New Yorkbased percussionist and singer Pedrito Martinez last spring got me thinking, “Man, this is a guy I’ve got to see.” (”If anyone can move Afro-Cuban music into greater visibility, it’s Martinez,” the article stated.) I put Martinez’s weekly gig at a Cuban restaurant in Manhattan on my wish list, but now I don’t have to travel east to see him (though I still reserve the right to do so). Martinez’s fourpiece group closes Jazz Aspen’s winter jazz series with two fiery nights in the cozy spot known as the JAS Café. a publication of the aspen times

Grocery Stores Don’t forget to bring your own bag Last spring, ordinances banning the distribution of plastic bags at grocery stores went into effect in Aspen and Carbondale. The ordinance also requires the stores charge a 20-cent fee for paper bags. When shopping at City Market locations in Carbondale and Aspen or Clark’s Market in Aspen, use a reusable bag in order to avoid paying the fee. You can get bags by: 1. Purchasing them at the store 2. Borrowing them from a “bag bank” at the Pitkin County Library, Aspen Recreation Center, Aspen Club and various locations throughout the city. 3. Ask the front desk at your hotel if the property offers reusable bags to guests.

BASALT

Western heritage Basalt is about 20 miles downvalley from Aspen, sitting at the confluence of the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork rivers. With its charming 100-year-old buildings and new structures adding vibrancy to the downtown, Basalt still maintains a connection to its 19th-century roots. From 1883 to 1918, the Midland Railroad brought passengers and freight to the Roaring Fork Valley through Basalt via Hagerman Pass. It’s a rugged pass, and the terrain rides were often plagued with rockslides, snowdrifts, derailments and coal shortages. Today, in the historic downtown district, fine restaurants and locally owned shops await — perfect for a day trip from Aspen or an evening outing.

QUICK FACT In the growing El Jebel area, the Willits Town Center is bringing an urban feel to the midvalley, with upscale shops, excellent restaurants and more. Whole Foods also opened a location there this summer.

CARBONDALE

Fresh haven for art, recreation lovers Carbondale has been the buzz of the Roaring Fork Valley in recent years. Stroll its historic downtown district, where an ongoing renaissance has brought new life to the town with chic shops, great restaurants and a fresh crew of locals. The historic Dinkel Building, named for a Carbondale founder, is located on Main Street and is the center of downtown activity including the beloved Crystal Theater. Aided by the active Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, Carbondale also is a growing arts center, with numerous galleries, the Carbondale Clay Center (the Roaring Fork Valley’s only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to ceramic arts) and Thunder River Theater Company’s new state-of-theart, black-box theater.

QUICK FACT For the outdoorsy set, Carbondale is a great place to start a Mount Sopris backcountry expedition, don cross-country skis for a tour of the Spring Gulch Nordic trail system or make the journey farther up the Crystal River Valley to explore the adventures that await in Redstone, Marble or beyond.

SNOWMASS

Still growing Snowmass Village is steeped in ranching history, tucked high in the Brush Creek Valley. It resides within 25 square-miles, has over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails and offers one of the best music scenes in the state. Snowmass Village is one of the few resorts in the U.S. to offer plentiful mountain boarding terrain, and it is the second largest ski mountain in Colorado that offers nearly 150 miles of trails. Snowmass also has the longest lift-served vertical rise in the U.S. and was the first in the country to have a lift operated solely by clean, renewable wind power. The mountain is flanked by charming boutiques, restaurants and accommodations.

QUICK FACT Some big changes have been happening in Snowmass Village, including the addition of a Westin resort in the former Silvertree Hotel and some construction in Base Village. That work means this winter, guests can drop skiers off at the Arrival Center next to the Base Village parking garage. And on the mountain, the Aspen Skiing Co. has added 230 acres of terrain to the west of Long Shot and constructed a new restaurant at the top of Elk Camp Gondola.

hickory house THIS IS OUR STORY and we’re stickin’

to it! Our restaurants are family-owned and operated. We are here every day, looking after our food, our staff and our guests, making sure everything is the way it should be. Since 1988, we have worked at crafting our Baby Back Ribs, Barbeque Sauces and other recipes. In that time, we’ve won dozens of national and international rib cook-off competition awards. Several years ago we introduced our fare to the Hickory House Restaurants in Aspen and Parker, where we have achieved success beyond our dreams. We serve the most affordable breakfast, lunch and dinner in town. Dine in, take out, we deliver and we cater. We also ship our award winning sauces all over the country. In addition to our award winning ribs, our menu offers chicken dinners, smokes meats, huge salads, sandwiches and out of this world side dishes.

jimmy’s restaurant For the past 16 years, Jimmy’s has

been Aspen’s neighborhood restaurant and bar, the kind of comfortable restaurant where you can dine again and again. Ask any local, and you will hear that Jimmy’s is an “Aspen Institution.” The menu has something for everyone, from the fresh-squeezed margaritas and the “locally-priced” bar menu to the highest quality steaks, crab cakes, seafood, pork and poultry. And you can always find comfort-food specialties like meatloaf and mac & cheese. “The menu is designed to feature the finest in American cuisine without being pretentious, served in an energetic atmosphere,” says proprietor (and local) Jimmy Yeager. To accomplish this goal, Jimmy’s uses the best possible local ingredients and is completely high fructose corn syrup free. If you share Jimmy’s passion for cocktails, choose from a creative list of classics and contemporaries made with freshly-squeezed juices. The spirits menu features the finest selection of tequila and mezcal in Aspen along with an extensive collection of local and specialty liquors. better in the mountains, but it’s also true that the mountains are what inspired the hearty, rustic food that is our legacy and epitomizes our menus worldwide. In Aspen, where a cosmopolitan spirit can thrive even in the remoteness of this old mining town, so can the passion for food. Despite the lack of oxygen at 8,000 feet above sea level, the vibrant flavors and exemplary service that are an Il Mulino New York tradition live onward and upward at the base of Aspen Mountain. Even with its remote location, Aspen is known for its worldrenowned culinary scene. Here, the standard for fine dining rivals any major city and is further intensified by the walking distance proximity of over 80 restaurants and bars and a jet-setting clientele that knows and expects the best. The Eggs Benedict’s hollandaise sauce is concocted daily from scratch, as is the addictive green chili that tops Poppycocks’ Huevos Rancheros. NEW ownership and a NEW Executive Chef we will provide an experience you are sure to enjoy. Our historic bar and restaurant was established in 1892 and has been a traditional gathering place for food and drink since Aspen’s mining days. Today we maintain the classic “Old Colorado” ambiance while serving excellent food and drink options for the entire family. Diners will find a delicious menu that is designed to offer something for everyone – Lunch and Dinner. Looking for bar food? The Classics awaits you at The Red Onion; Sliders, Salads, Fries and our famous “Onion” soup are served nightly. The historic bar offers many brews on tap, wines by the glass and is famous for a wide selection of hard to find Whiskeys. The Red Onion also boasts having the most square footage of televisions in Aspen. Be sure to check out the lively bar scene during game days and key televised events where you will find food & drink specials. Happy hour runs daily from 3pm 6pm. The hand made Red Onion Burger is the best in town. Lunch specialties also include a great selection of Salads and items like the Philly Cheese Steak and Tequila Lime chicken sandwich. Dinner entrees include favorite items created with the old Red Onion in mind: Roasted Organic Half Chicken, Grilled Ruby Red Trout and Brown Sugar & Lime Marinated Flatiron Steak. The Prime Rib special is served traditionally, but if you miss that, you can certainly catch the Shaved Prime Rib sandwiches after skiing. People continue to fill the Red Onion for great Food, Drink and entertainment. At night you will often find live music, Open Mic-Night or even Beer-Pong. One thing is for certain – you will always have a good time! This is one of the oldest staples Aspen has to offer and one not to miss. The Red Onion is back to the glory days of old. Come join us.
