haute tension KEEPING THE FUNK HOT, HOT, HOT BY DAVID ROLLAND
L
ast summer Haute Tension found the perfect exercise to test their endurance as a band. They would play 31 South Florida shows in 31 days. “It was a challenge to book it until we said there’s no limit to where you can play,” said guitarist Alexandre Merbouti. “We then tried to stay away from traditional venues. We played bowling alleys, rooftops, a roller skating rink, even as close to a basement as you can get down here. People were open to it.” Last August Haute Tension not only met their goal of 31 shows in a month, they exceeded it. They ended up playing 34 shows in 31 nights after one gig got rained out and they accidentally double booked themselves while seeking a replacement venue. “It showed what an incredible support system South Florida has,” said bassist Monica McGivern. “Being an independent band is its own journey. Doing something like this shows there’s a lot you can get done by doing things yourself.” The pair first met when McGivern was photographing the local music scene. “I’d moved to West Palm Beach

after growing up in Michigan, and I realized I could live by the beach forever,” she explained. McGivern asked Merbouti, a guitarist she’d often photographed, if he could teach her how to play bass. After a couple lessons they decided they had to form a band and dubbed themselves, Mo’Booty. Last year they decided to change their name to Haute Tension when they were comfortable declaring themselves a real band and not just a project. Beyond a new name in 2018, they also welcomed a new drummer, Nabedi Osorio. “We put out a call for a drummer to do the 31 shows in 31 days tour. Nabedi was the first one crazy enough to respond,” Merbouti said. It didn’t hurt that McGivern and Osorio long knew each other from volunteering at Miami Girls Rock Camp, a nonprofit that teaches girls how to play Rock ’n’ Roll. Osorio shared the band’s work ethic and they’re excited for her to join them on a planned second album. “It will be cool to write with her and explore harmonizing with three vocalists,” McGivern said. >>

Their self-titled debut album just came out last year. “It was songs we developed over the last three years,” Merbouti said. “Sound-wise, it’s a mash up of influences from surf to soul to blues to psychedelic to punk to hard rock. Thematically it’s very ‘film soundtrack’ influenced.”
grew up influenced us musically, like I got into punk from Detroit,” McGivern said. “But the West Palm Beach indie scene I documented is all over the album, and Miami is so much Latin and Caribbean music that it influenced our beats on the album.”
McGivern added, “We wrote it when we were living in Downtown Miami. We saw all the buildings being torn down and the Brightline being built that will bring all these people into the city. It’s the soundtrack for the development of a city.”
They’re hoping 2019 will continue with a high quantity of high quality shows. Might they try to test their mettle with another show-a-day tour? Neither of them hesitated to answer with a “Yes.”
South Florida as a whole is a big influence for Haute Tension with both members being able to see the region as outsiders. McGivern, as mentioned before, grew up in Michigan, while Merbouti spent his formative years in California before coming to South Florida. “Where we

egardless if you like to tap the drums, slap the bass, or stroke the chords, Artikal Sound System will get you moving in all the right places. The team of multi-faceted musicians blends unique harmonies and mellow melodies with a fat ounce of reggae funk. While the band has been around since 2012, it’s safe to say that they’re higher in their band-ism now more than ever. Fabian Acuña (bass) and Chris Montague (guitar) were the original dynamic duo 10 years ago in their college days, and have seen a few albums and band members come and go. They both live, eat and breathe music, and stopping was not an option. So, with the addition of Logan Rex (lead singer), Chris Cope (keyboard) and Adam Kampf (drums), their family is now rolled tight and is in it for the long haul. “It’s like anything, it happens over time,” Chris Montague said. “People come and go. But we’ve arrived at a really solid formation, and it’s working well because we vibe well.” If you ask them, they say they blend roots and modern sounds under smooth female vocals, and put their efforts toward bringing love, good vibes and a dancing mood wherever they go. They’ve

successfully united American, Jamaican and Hispanic reggae culture and have brought it to venues small and large, nationally and internationally. They’ve shared the stage with mega reggae artists including Pepper, Dirty Heads, Steel Pulse, The Wailers, and more, and have even collaborated with The Abbysinians, Apple Gabriel of Israel Vibration, and Biggz General, who has Marley blood running through him. With the musical forces combined, they just released their fivetrack EP, Time. They were so excited for people to hear it because they made the music to share, so they released it for free99. It’s their first collaboration with all five of them and they just created music that they like - wanted to hear, wanted to play, and wanted to spread.
As it seems with them all. It feels like each of them were born with minds that can read and sing keys and notes, and fingers that can strum and stroke, but until now, it wasn’t the perfect harmony. “A band, like anything, is always evolving, and we are at our most advanced evolution at the moment,” Montague said. “Over the years, and working with different musicians and singers, and practicing and songwriting, and taking that experience and adding a great singer like Logan, I feel great. I feel like we’re in the best position.” That position is writing new songs for a new release, touring through Texas and back, and, oh yeah, opening for Collie Buddz in March.
It was a work in progress that just kind of happened, thankfully. Logan had been playing in other bands playing a bunch of bar gigs and messing around, she says. At the time, she was neighbors with Fabian, or “Fabs,” and he and the boys reeled her in. They finally got her in the studio and starting recording, starting with a cover of “Crave You” by Flight Facilities. Their “preserved first song,” as Fabian puts it, earned them more than 100,000 views on Facebook and some serious recognition, to boot.
“I feel the most blessed to be able to do what we do. Music is my hobby and my passion,” Montague said. “Not a lot of people have hobbies that make them money. If I’m 60 years old and the band never made it out of South Florida and I’m still bar gigging, I’m happy.”
Logan, who was born to Willie Nelson’s “Stardust” album, found her voice at a young age in choir, becoming best friends with the karaoke machine, as well as playing guitar and piano. But until now, never seemed to think being in a band would be it, that it could be real.
“I was feeling so hot, yeah, I hit that sweet spot Hit the alley for a split, cuz forget it, why not? I think the late night spot closes at four, the rest is a mystery but there’s one thing I know for sure
“I never thought of [making a living being a musician], even as I was gigging around at the time. I just never thought of it,” Logan said. “I feel lucky to have gotten with a very good group who has shown me a lot and accelerated the learning process.”
Good news is that they’ll definitely make it out of South Florida, one weekend, one show and one album at a time.
I’m gonna do it again I’m gonna do it again I’m gonna do it again Next weekend Next weekend” @artikalsoundsystem

matt cahur THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC AT GUANABANAS AND ROOTS MUSIC, INC.
T
he producer, guitarist, band manager, event coordinator and recording label head has been sharing his love of music and advocating raw talent for decades. For Matt Cahur, music has never seemed to escape his life, even when he’s off stage. After moving to Jupiter, Fla. in 1995, he started the reggae rock band, Boxelder, playing guitar and percussion in collaboration with Bryce Allen (vocals/ percussion), Eli McDonald (guitar/percussion), Gilly Gonzalez (bass/percussion) and Patrick Boggs (drums/ percussion). They toured for 15 years and released eight albums – with original bass player, Jay Foster – and although they’ve only been performing a handful of shows these past years, the band members still have their hand in music. Gilly plays guitar and sings for the Latino reggae band, Moska Project, and Bryce set off as a solo artist in the Bryce Allen Band. Soon after, in 1998, they started their own record label, Roots Music, Inc., as a way to propel and market their own band, as Cahur says, “We needed a record label and we just created our own.” They represent talent like

The Helmsmen, The Hip Abduction, and their very own, Bryce Allen Band, and help young artists find the platform to show off their talent. One of those platforms is another one of Cahur’s brainchildren: Guanabanas Waterfront Restaurant and Bar in Jupiter. Back in 2008, Cahur was brought in to build the stage and install a new audio system. He worked to create an environment for the artist and a production scene for the music to flow, which translates to a great experience for the audience. As he says, “My goal was to try and provide an incredible experience for the artist at Guanabanas.” Having toured himself for years with Boxelder, he was acutely aware that sometimes artists are treated poorly and wanted to set a new precedent at Guanabanas in which artists would feel welcome and have a proper platform to share their craft. Luckily, the owners at the restaurant met Cahur eye-to-eye and shared his passion for supporting local artists, saying,

THE MUSIC ISSUE “They’re owed a huge high five, because without them, many of these artists wouldn’t have the same exposure. The owners have been huge supporters of local artists.” In addition to being the main man behind the bookings at Guanabanas, Cahur has also booked acts for several neighboring venues. Sometimes as a way to get the band additional gigs in the area to make the trip to South Florida more worthwhile. And of course, Guanabanas would be one of them. “What we created in Jupiter the last twenty years is a stop in the train that allows more artists to come and play.” When asked what his next project is, he paused before responding, “That’s a good question. I think about it all the time. Maybe retire,” followed by a laugh, as he says, “Maybe record another Boxelder album, continue

working with Ellameno Beat, I want to help them break out…continue with Guanabanas, there’s still so much to be done.” He would also like to have a 20-year anniversary show for Roots Music, Inc. at the Seabreeze Amphitheater, and is working on having a bluegrass festival at Guanabanas sometime this year. You can catch a show at Guanabanas on Wednesday nights, featuring an up-and-coming band; Saturdays for the brunch show, showcasing a solo artist; the matinee show where you can catch an acoustic set; or the night show featuring the latest in local, touring or national bands. On Sunday, they offer another brunch solo artist if you miss Saturday’s show. All of which has been carefully curated by Cahur himself. @rootsmusicinc

The taco has been a favorite finger food since before Europeans settled in America. Anthropologists found evidence that native people in Mexico were eating tacos filled with small fish centuries ago. I didn’t want the headaches of a big restaurant or fine dining.” You get two tacos per order with prices ranging from $7-$12 with varieties including a pork belly taco with pickled papaya and peppers, pescadito frito that is tempura fried with pickled pineapple salsa, and a short rib taco with braised beef, spicy mayo, green papaya and queso fresco. Make sure to take advantage of their margaritas on tap, about which Carnes said, “I saw other places doing that and I always wondered, why isn’t everybody else? Once I found out how a keg worked and it was no longer a mystery, I got a margarita formula down and started kegging margaritas.”
ZIPITIOS Owners Ricky Perez and Niria Proa started Zipitio’s
with the goal of sharing a bit of their Mexican and Central American culture and creativity through their food. It is situated in West Palm’s Grandview Public Market, which was South Florida’s first food hall. Zipitios offers four different tacos including the least expensive Chicken Tinga, made with shredded chicken, queso fresco and cilantro aioli, and a vegetarian option called the Garibaldi, with coconut curry chickpeas, Valentina aioli, and crispy onions, both for $7.50. The $8 El Tunco has pulled pork with pickled slaw, house BBQ molé sauce, and crispy chicharron bits, and for $9 you can get Carne Guisado, which is stewed steak with pickled red onion, and tomatillo salsa verde.
found on 27 S. Federal Highway and advertises itself as “selling the most authentic Mexican street food around.” Their individual tacos go for $2.95 and are served in grilled white corn tortillas with cotija cheese, cilantro, onion and your choice of protein. If you’re looking for some variety, they also offer seven different chef specialty tacos that range from $3.95 to $4.50 and include a catch of the day, crispy pork belly, lamb barbacoa, Angus skirt steak, Korean fried chicken, el Don Hamburgeso, and a shrimp taco.
TACO CHULA
The Palm Beach Gardens taqueria is located on 10800 N. Military Trail. Owned by a Venezuelan family, Co-owner Peter Tapia told the Palm Beach Post when they opened in 2017, “We’ve been eating Mexican food since we were kids, it’s one of the most amazing tasting foods I’ve ever had in my life.” Their tacos are $2.75 a pop but you have the option of getting extra meat for another dollar. The taco options include Al pastor (spicy pork with pineapples), Carnitas (pulled pork), Barbacoa (braised beef), Pollo (shredded chicken), Carne asada (grilled steak), Chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage), and vegetarian.
AVOCADO GRILL Avocado Grill has two locations, one in
Palm Beach Gardens on 11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Ave., and another in West Palm on 125 Datura St. They advertise themselves as a farm-to-table restaurant with their website proclaiming, “We take pride in our artisanal menu featuring locally sourced, handpicked ingredients. FOOD serving farm-to-table fare benefits not only our valued patrons and guests, but also our local and global environments.” For $13, they offer four choices of craft tacos including grilled steak tacos with roasted corn tomato salsa and chipotle crema, or crispy fish tacos with avocado, lime ginger sauce, tropical fruit salsa, and slaw.
TACOCRAFT The Fort Lauderdale taqueria and tequila bar is
found on 204 S.W. Second St. TacoCraft proclaims on their site that “Every tortilla is hand-crafted by Mexican senoras who have been taught by their mothers and grandmothers. TacoCraft features modern interpretations of street food classics and utilizes the best available local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients.” They have 13 different tacos daily, including a pork belly and ahi tuna taco. Vegetarians will be pleased to try their kale & sweet potato taco or their exotic shroom taco. Each day of the week they also have a special daily taco offering a tofu taco on Mondays, lobster tempura on Fridays, and duck confit on Saturdays. Prices range from $3.75 to $5 per taco.
KAPOW! NOODLE BAR Kapow! Noodle Bar started in Boca
Raton at 431 Plaza Real and in 2017 opened a second location in West Palm at 519 Clematis St. Owner Scott Frielich explained the restaurant’s concept in an interview with Yelp as inspired by “reading about the noodle bar craze that was happening across the country, and being a fan of ramen and pho, I decided to check out a few restaurants in NYC.” Their Gyoza Tacos are $13 for three tacos and include three varieties: Spicy Skirt Steak includes aji amarillo, serrano, and pickled red onion; the Ahi Tuna Poke has avocado, tosazu, and sesame; and the Salmon Tartare features spicy mayo, avocado, truffle oil, and eel sauce.
PAPICHULO TACOS Located on 1556 US Highway 1 in

FOOD taqueria. “We definitely did not want to be authentic, but wanted to be more California street food-style, using unique combinations of fruits, meats and vegetables,” Frielich said. “We make everything in house, including our chips and tortillas.” He recommends the Gringo Freedom taco, with Kobe beef, pico de gallo, cheddar and jack cheese, sour cream, lettuce and a hard shell taco ($4).
PAPA’S RAW BAR Open at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 12 p.m.
SURF TACO Started in New Jersey in 2001, Surf Taco
branched out to 4050 S. US Highway 1 in Jupiter as its one Florida franchise. They’re open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. weeknights and until 9:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Their menu features 13 variations on the taco including mahi, salmon, buffalo chicken, garlic shrimp and the veggie taco. Prices range from $3.95 for the beef taco to $5.75 for garlic shrimp or mahi taco.
on weekends, Papa’s Raw Bar at 4610 N. Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point is a seafood restaurant, but also serves interesting tacos. Or, as their menu bills it, “the most interesting tacos.” Each taco is served on corn tortillas with shredded cabbage and chipotle mayo. For $5 you can get pork belly, shrimp or today’s catch, while $7 nets you lobster or conch tacos. Add an extra dollar to “make it Matt’s way” with bacon, avocado, and Yum Yum sauce. All of their tacos are blackened with pico de gallo, or panko or beer battered with Georgia Peach salsa.

BEER
THREE CORE BEERS
AT TEQUESTA BREWING COMPANY BY MIKE JUREWICZ
V
ery rarely do we ever get to see evolution take place so quickly that it is viewable in one’s lifetime. The craft beer industry is one of these rare cases. Seemingly every year a new twist or turn is encountered that steers the collective masses through the course. In my 10 years of writing and working in the beer industry I can say with certainty that it does not look at all like it did a decade ago. This exponential growth is coupled with trends that develop from year to year. Some will come on strong and fizzle out, almost as quickly as they came to light, while others will stick around and become staples or even standards to the industry. One of these latest trends is the demand from beer drinkers for something new. The loud voice, but possible minority, of beer drinkers has called out that they are tired of drinking the same old things all the time from breweries. They want new recipes with new ingredients, and they want these often. With this trend taking hold, a campaign, #FlagshipFebruary, was made to remind beer drinkers about, and celebrate, the beers that are available all year long—and are damn tasty. Tequesta Brewing Company (affectionately called TBC) has found a way to balance out the production of new, interesting beers along with their core lineup that helped build their name since opening in 2011. With #FlagshipFebruary in mind, I give to you beautiful readers three beers that make TBC who they are.

DER CHANCELLOR You cannot talk about TBC without talking about Der Chancellor. You would be hard pressed to find a place in northern Palm Beach County that doesn’t have this light, German-style Kölsch on tap, in cans or in bottles. Many could say that it is THE beer of Jupiter, Juno Beach, North Palm Beach and (of course) Tequesta. When TBC’s sister brewery, Twisted Trunk Brewing, came online, it helped with production of Der Chancellor to free up some tank space at the home base brewery for their more limited release brews. Today Der Chancellor makes up 55 percent of TBC’s total production. When sipping on Der Chancellor, expect a bready malt character with slight floral hop notes from the Tettnang hops used. A crisp and clean finish, coupled with a light body, shows why this South Florida OG craft beer is so popular. Der Chancellor can be found on draft, six packs of 12oz bottles, as well as 4 packs of 16oz cans. The latter of which is only available at TBC.

BEER
GNARLY BARLEY
TERMINALLY ALE
One of the carryovers from head brewer Matt Webster’s time brewing at Corner Cafe (located conveniently next door to TBC), this pale ale utilizes all whole cone Cascade, Centennial and Magnum hops.
Terminally is sometimes forgotten by many - outside of the hardcore regulars - when it comes to TBC’s flagship lineup, and that’s a real shame. Webster considers this brown ale to be one of his absolute favorites that they brew, and this author tends to agree with this sentiment. The brown ale itself has been claimed as having lost its place in the world, and for those who believe this utterly awful and unfounded statement, you are missing out on a fantastic world. Brown ales are alive and well, and a big thanks to TBC for knowing that and continuing to put out a fantastic rendition of the style.
The malt character is biscuit-like, followed up with some hints of pine and citrus from the aforementioned hops. The finish is dry and crisp with a touch of bitterness. This is a great example of an American pale ale that has a ton of flavor and is easy to drink. Gnarly Barley can be found on draft as well as occasional 16-ounce can four packs.
Big notes of coffee and chocolate come out to play in the flavor and aromas in this wonderful low alcohol beer. It has a great medium body that doesn’t feel like it’s weighing you down but is far from thin. It goes incredibly well with the milder-than-normal winter South Florida has been having, but will transfer over very well to even the hottest of months. @tequestabrewingcompany

The 2019 Van, Surf & Skate Expo A 1970’S COMMUNITY EVENT MAKES A RESURGENCE IN MODERN FORM By Darien Davies
I
n 1977, South Florida was ground zero to a movement of young athletes who were breaking vertical – literally and figuratively – barriers in the sports of surfing and skateboarding, and welcomed the Inaugural Van, Surf and Skateboard Exposition (VSSE) at the Palm Beach Auditorium. It only took four years for the VSSE to become the premier surfing, skateboarding and music festival in Florida, but after some bad breaks, the show lost its vision and following… until now. Thankfully longtime action sports enthusiast, Bill Unger, is breathing new life into the event. “When I was 13 years old, I asked my mom to buy me a surfboard. But she couldn’t afford it,” Unger said. “When I was leaving the [Expo], one of the guys from Fox Surfboards yelled out, ‘Hey, Kid! Want to win a surfboard?’ I took the last dollar I had, bought a ticket, and ended up winning. This opened the world to me.” Because of that, he wants to make sure that every year some kid will have the chance to win a board and have his/her world opened up. This year marks the first year of the vastly improved VSSE. With new ownership, the show is getting back to its roots and is recommitting itself to its core audience, with a goal to once again be the premier sports and music event in Florida. >>

The VSSE will bring world class educational seminars presented by local leaders in action sports, as well as provide a platform for athletes and artists to communicate directly to the audience about advancements and challenges facing the sport and industry today, including the issue of clean water.
VIP launch party the Friday prior. Expect to enjoy some serious fun in the sun with educational classes, live music, and a front row seat to watch top skateboarders compete in half pipe, big air, street and freestyle competitions. Tickets are $5 for kids for a weekend pass and $25 for adults for the weekend or $15 for the day.
“Our goal is to keep this an annual event and replant this event in Palm Beach County,” Unger said. “We want to establish that it was an event in the ‘70s and ‘80s and then turn it into the youth. We have to continue to let the youth say, ‘Hey, this is what’s going on.’ The original event was always on the cutting edge of things.”
“Someone called it the gathering of the tribes, and that’s what it is,” Unger said. So if you surf, design, skate, convert old vans and love the “it’s Friday and I’m outta here” nomadic lifestyle, this is for you, dude. And if you punked out this year and are just now reading this, make sure to jump on board next year because it’s going to be even more epic.
The event is held at the Surfing Florida Museum and The Warehouse District in West Palm Beach on March 23 and 24, with a

ART
How I got the shot
Carly Cristello
(Snappin Necks Photography)
My name is Carly Cristello of Snappin Necks Photography. I am originally from Philadelphia and have been living in South Florida for the last six years. I have been a photographer for three years, specializing in concert photography. I love the energy of the crowds and musicians, which I hope people can feel when they see my art. I’ve made so many great friends through my photography, and feel fortunate to call my favorite band, Slightly Stoopid, their crew and management, friends! This photo was shot at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA during Slightly Stoopid’s “Just Passing Through” Tour this past November. Over the past five years I’ve attended and shot more than 30 of their concerts around the United States. The band is extremely supportive and encouraging of my photography journey, and has always allowed me all access. That’s how I was able to achieve this shot.

I was on side stage when their set ended. As the crowd was cheering for an encore, Kyle, one of the two lead singers, walked out with his guitar while the Tabernacle’s lights were still off. That’s when their trombone player held up his phone with the flashlight on, signaling the crowd to do the same. Facing forward, I saw the magic of the crowd coming together and sharing in this moment. That’s when I carefully crept in front of the percussion equipment and drum set. Wearing all black, like a ninja, I placed myself right behind Kyle. Not wanting to be seen, I quickly hit the shutter button and scurried back to the side stage. My settings were set to ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/200 second shutter speed with a 16mm focal length. Kyle was playing “Closer to the Sun,” which happens to be my favorite song. There’s nothing more compelling than the experience of live music bringing people together. @snappinnecks_
