Jam Out at SunFest

March/April 2020 Founded in 1982, SunFest is Florida’s largest annual waterfront music and art festival and attracts more than 100,000 music-loving adventurers. The event is located in the West Palm Beach Arts and Entertainment District along Flagler Drive from Banyan Boulevard to Lakeview Avenue. The amazing band lineup includes everyone from Darius Rucker, Slightly Stoopid, Adam Lambert, JJ Grey & Mofro, Nelly and Sean Paul to A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Kevin Gates, Melissa Etheridge, Childish Major, Angie Rose and many, many more. There’s an extensive schedule for the bands, which perform on either the Ford Stage, Tire Kingdom Stage or Airtab Stage, so make sure to check SunFest.com for timing so you don’t miss out on your must-hears. Tickets are $40, $65 and $83 for a one-day, two-day or four-day pass, respectively, when purchased in advance, so don’t delay. In addition to the party for your ears, there are also plenty of options for your other senses. Not only are there two floating bars – Captain Morgan and Kettle One – but there are also three Eateries dishing out food galore, including tons of plant-based items, burgers, lobster rolls, and more. There’s also an Art District that’s open Friday through Sunday and provides a hub of artistic expression and activity. You’re invited to add a personal touch on the massive chalkboard and mobile murals creations, become part of the art with henna tattoos or body dipping, or simply check out the artist vendors and their goodies.

Held Thursday, April 30 through Sunday, May 3, the event will have more than 40 of the hottest, newest, most veteran, and soon-tobe-your-new-favorite bands grace their stages.

Jump on Board for Cruiser Palooza Even if you are new to Delray, or have been a long-time resident, you know just how special the Delray Beach community is at helping and building each other up. The Cruiser Palooza is a prime example of this amazing community pride and togetherness. Cruiser Palooza is an annual fundraiser for Cruise Bogle, a local Delray resident, as a way to provide financial support to help him with ongoing medical expenses as a result of his accidental spinal cord injury he suffered skim boarding with a friend when he was 19 years old. Now 30, Cruise is a wheelchair-bound-butmentally-free, mouth-painting quadriplegic artist, entrepreneur, professional smiler and positive thinker. Now in its 12th year, the Cruiser Palooza features spectacular food, cocktails, both a silent and a live auction, great vibes, and amazing music by The Resolvers as well as other local bands. The goal of the event is to not only provide a party to celebrate Cruise and his triumphs, but to also provide emotional and financial support for him and his family. The event is held on Saturday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at the Old School Square Pavilion, 51 N. Swinton Ave. Tickets are $35 for general admission (bring your own chair), $50 for premium (reserved seating) and $100 for VIP (exclusive lounge area, three drink tickets and reserved seating). The success of Cruiser Palooza that has come to fruition is because of the love and support from everyone who has come out to one event, every event, or simply helped Cruise to enjoy his accomplishments. For this particular event, Old School Square has also partnered with Cruiser Palooza to benefit not only Cruise but also The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation whose mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and improve the quality of life for those like Cruise who are living with paralysis. Hurricane Party Freakin’ What They Feel BY DARIEN DAVIES

f you can understand and fully decipher their music, you’re missing the point. The lyrics just sort of happen, the shows are a product of the energy, and the beat never stops, which produces a sound that can’t easily be duplicated and never fully imitated. Meet Hurricane Party. Rick Colado, aka RickoLus, and Jacques Bruna, aka Bleubird, have been partying across the globe for about two decades but just recently collaborated to make some tunes together. In total, they’ve made one full record together and two limited edition cassette eps. “We’ve known each other for ages. We met through our mutual homie Astronautalis and would always hang with each other when visiting our towns on tour,” said Colado, 39. “But we never had worked on anything together till a few years back. Jacques called me and was like, ‘Yo, you wanna work on a song or two and just f*ck around?’ That was how Hurricane Party started, just Bleubird and I f*ckin’ around in my home studio in Jacksonville. After that it all came together so quickly, it seemed like we had always been a band.” Sure does. What started as an accident morphed into something entertaining that they both had a ton of fun doing. True to their form, they don’t know really where they want to go, but are planning on getting back in the studio and seeing what happens. The goal is always to “keep the party going,” but exactly what that looks like cannot be pinned down, much like their process of songwriting. “It’s always a surprise. Once we are working on something it doesn’t take us long,” said Colado, who says they don’t try to do anything and just see what happens. “Like once we sit down and start, it’s not a terribly long process. The ideas start flowing and we hit it while the iron’s hot.” >>

Put it together, Colado said one of their newest songs, Pamplemousse, was inspired by a sex fantasy he dreamed up while sitting in the Bach church (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, Germany on their first Euro tour. LIVN was inspired by getting high in the woods and the movie Bio-Dome with Pauly Shore. “I don’t know, [the ideas for songs] just happens. That’s a complex thing to try and break down,” he said. But don’t let their jumpsuit-wearing, crazy ass videos or sometimes non-sensical lyrics fool you. They both have plenty of music cred under their white jumpsuit elastic waistlines. “We both learned our respective crafts on our own as a couple of street artists,” Colado said. “Bleubird with the raps and me with the piano, guitar and drums. Put it together, and you get Hurricane Party.” So WTF is a Hurricane Party? If you’re a Floridian who’s felt the fear of an impending storm, you know all too well. While most people are gathering batteries, candles and water, the party-goers are stocking up on beer, glow-in-the-dark anything and more beer, and actually sweat it out on purpose creating all the kinky kinetic energy possible. “We are both born and raised in Florida and have lived with hurricanes our whole life,” Colado said. “Hurricane parties are just a part of our environment and our history, and seemed a fitting name for what we were doing and how we felt about what we were doing,” which is “a party where you’re sometimes up in your feelings.” >>

Their most memorable performance was their Florida tour for their “Juice” album release. “The crowds were wild, the energy was palpable, our crew was tons of fun and the finale in Fort Lauderdale was on the roof with the crowd pouring out into the street and we had big ol’ fireworks blowing up behind us. Just wild stuff, never been to shows like that, much less played one,” Colado said. And for these characters to be impressed, you know it had to be one damn good time. A damn good time they’re planning on continuing. “Man, our days are never the same,” said Colado, who says they both party full time and the band is the side party. “Between playing shows, touring, booking tours, promoting, working bar shifts and side hustles, it’s a never ending grind/party. It can be exhausting but we love it.” They’re hitting the road solo this spring but are planning to join forces again for a Hurricane Party tour of Florida in the summer. So keep your earbuds primed for some more musical madness from this dynamic duo, who can’t stop, won’t stop bringing you the fun. “Hey, it’s a Hurricane Party. Feet Grounded But Flying High BY DAVID ROLLAND

t was hard for singer/guitarist Sierra Lane to pick what was most surreal of playing in front of thousands of people on the main stage of last December’s Riptide Music Festival. “I always go to music festivals and concerts. To be part of it instead of just watching was crazy to me. I’m used to playing in restaurants. Then when I was walking out like five people asked to take a selfie with me. I had to ask, ‘are you sure?’,” Lane said. Though she hasn’t yet graduated from high school, Lane might have to start getting used to strangers who are fans asking to take pictures with her. Take a gander at her YouTube channel and you can hear the Jupiter native has the talent to maintain a long and successful musical career. If you check out the number of live dates she plays, you’ll observe she also has the work ethic to strive to make her dreams come true. While Lane took choir from kindergarten into high school at Jupiter Christian School, she also started teaching herself guitar from watching videos on the internet. “Music is the only thing I was good at. I tried, but I wasn’t any good at sports or dance. So I’ve taken the time to work on my sound,” Lane said. It was an introduction to reggae a few years ago that truly inspired her, saying “once I got into reggae, I realized it was everywhere.” After playing a bunch of open mic nights all throughout South Florida, she met the four guys who now form her band, including bassist Rocky Rocker, guitarist Derek McLean, drummer Cory Ricardy, and Patrick Montanari on sax and keys. “They live further south so we don’t get to rehearse that much. I send them set lists and the keys to the songs. Mostly I give them new songs at the gigs,” Lane said. “I try to add new covers every week. This week was ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ by Arctic Monkeys and ‘Back Pocket’ by Vulfpeck.”

Lane’s biggest fan and support, she says, comes from her mom. “She’s my manager and helps me promote. She was infatuated with music as a kid, too. She takes care of the other things so I can focus on school and the creative process,” Lane said. The result of that creative process is on display with her original song “Deep Dive.” “It’s kind of half reggae, half indie. When I write songs I try to make them my own. I try to make my songs not sound like anyone else’s,” she explained. “The song is about courage. Look at all that’s ahead of you. You should go for it. But also don’t rush yourself. Take opportunity as it comes.” Lane is hopeful that 2020 will be a year filled with such opportunities. She wants to get into the recording studio to get some more original songs out there. She’s even more excited to play later this year at the 11th Annual California Roots Music and Arts Festival, which will be by far the furthest from her home base that she’s ever performed. “The furthest from Jupiter I’ve ever played is New Smyrna,” Lane said. Venues where locals can hear her sunbaked sultry voice on a regular basis include E.R. Bradley’s Saloon and The Butcher Shop Beer Garden & Grill in West Palm Beach, Guanabanas Restaurant in Jupiter, and Dada in Delray. Every fourth Thursday of the month she also has a steady gig at C.W.S. Bar + Kitchen in Lake Worth. Hell & Hollar Dirty and Loud Rock & Roll BY DAVID ROLLAND

lake Burns wants to make sure people know the correct spelling of his rock band Hell & Hollar. “Hollar has an a. That puts a Southern drawl on an old term that means piss and vinegar.” It’s a fitting emphasis since the four-piece band has a Southern rock vibe to both their fast-paced songs like “Showdown” or the gritty blues of “Low and Slow.” As a kid, Burns split his time between Delray Beach and the upper peninsula of Michigan. “Both places had different people. Michigan was real blue collar. South Florida was full of that folklore of drug runners and smugglers. I saw Delray as an outsider as a big money, extravagant place filled with expensive cars and homes. I had different friends in both places. That made me a chameleon. I got good at putting myself in other people’s shoes, which helps with songwriting,” Burns said. Burns, as singer and guitarist, originally started Hell & Hollar with his best friend, drummer Jean Lacerte, in 2014. The current iteration with bassist Johnny Dusko, drummer Nate Largent, and guitarist Ian Pattison fully jelled about a year ago. “I always intended it to be a four-piece [band] with two guitars,” Burns said. The quartet bonded over ’60s and ’70s space rock influences like Deep Purple, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd. Burns added he’s particularly influenced by bands like Clutch, Queens of the Stone Age, and Frank Black. ”I love bands you can’t put in any real box that are trying to do something different. Like have one song just be a harmonica and an organ. A record shouldn’t have to be something that people have to fish around for a good song.” Hell & Hollar took that philosophy into a Nashville recording studio for their debut self-titled EP. It was originally recorded in 2018, but with the band having recently picked up major distribution, they’re slowly re-releasing all the songs. “442” was the first to be re-released and, like all their songs, it was a bit personal to Burns.

“My dad had an Oldsmobile dealership. If you look at the car on the cover it has a sticker of my dad’s dealership,” Burns said. “442 was my favorite car growing up. It’s a fast car and it’s a double entendre on how I’ve always been, never letting anybody get in the way.” The band is planning a busy 2020 with the release of their first long player. “We want to release songs throughout the year, ending with a 13-song full length. 13 is important to me because I like to make fun of superstition,” Burns said. By the time you read this they should have released the single “Siberian Hunter” as a bridge between the EP and LP. “It has an intense vibe that is about exactly what the title says. It’s living off the land in a manly upbringing,” Burns said. There’s a good chance the studio where they recorded the song had something to do with the “living off the land” theme. Burns lives on a five-acre property west of Lake Worth that used to be a horse farm, and renovated an apartment that was on the second floor of a barn into their recording studio. “My joke name for the studio is Double Lane,” Burns said. “It’s the name of one of our songs, but the space looks like a double-wide trailer.” After a tour that took them across America in 2019, Hell & Hollar has yet to commit to any dates for 2020. Burns says that you should keep your eyes open for local shows, and when they play, he says they come to rock. “We try to do two full run-throughs before we play. We make sure we can play the songs without thinking about them, then we can just be who we are. We have a couple beers and do what we do,” Burns said. And it’s definitely going to involve some hollaring.

Rust & Wax A Vinyl Revival BY SEAN GORDON

ounded in 2014 by vinyl enthusiasts, Jesse and Melanie Feldman, Rust & Wax is West Palm Beach’s destination for vinyl records and vintage pieces. What began as a labor of love through online stores and occasional pop-up stands on the weekend has transformed into the meticulously curated store that exists today. “It’s a passion that’s just evolved. We started out at flea markets and estate sales hunting for records and it just grew from there,” Melanie said. After having a pop-up at a block party during the early stages of Elizabeth Ave Station, the Feldmans were approached to open up a full-time shop. Since teaming up with The Station in 2017, they have grown Rust & Wax from a 5-by-10 foot space with a selection of 300 records to a 10-by-10 foot space offering more than 3,000 records. Whether you’re an avid record collector or are just getting into vinyl, Rust & Wax has you covered. “We love it when customers come in and say, ‘I like these three bands but I’m looking for something new,’” Jesse said. “Then we have the fun task of combing through our collection and figuring out what new music we can turn them on to.” >>

In their efforts to put together the best possible selection for their customers, Jesse and Melanie are constantly seeking out new batches to search through so they can add to their ever-expanding catalogue. “The other week, we spent four hours on a Sunday in a storage unit just digging through a set of 4,000 records. It’s never-ending” Jesse said. The Feldmans have a thorough vetting process when it comes to the collection of records they offer. They are always searching for the highest quality vinyl, as well as music they know their customers are interested in. “A lot of what we’re looking for is a ‘you’ll know it when you see it’ kind of thing. We really know what our customers want,” Jesse said. When pawing through the various crates at Rust & Wax, you will notice a wide variety of genres ranging from classic rock and jazz to hip hop and modern pop music. “We don’t have a huge space so we try to curate a collection where everyone can find something they’ll like,” Melanie said. Every Friday morning Jesse and Melanie will introduce a record drop of 100-200 new records that they affectionally refer to as a “love letter” to their customers. “We’ve come to know and love the vinyl community in this area and it’s been undernourished because there aren’t a lot of record stores around,” Jesse said. “So each time we do a drop, we’re doing it to let them know that we hear them, and want to bring them what they’re looking for.” >>

In a digital age where music is readily available at the touch of a button, the Feldmans believe vinyl still holds its value. “There’s something to be said about having a record collection and putting together the pieces. It’s that tangible aspect of holding and owning music,” said Jesse, who believes that the act of shopping for new music to amplify your record collection is an experience in and of itself. “Each time you go into a record store, it’s different. If you head east down the main strip of West Palm Beach and turn right, you’ll see a new neon sign that reads “eat.” Inside you’ll find a minimal, modern atmosphere with an inviting bar, pickled vegetables on the wall, and decorations that could be taken from your grandmother’s country house. HOW I GOT THE SHOT

My name is Natalia Wilson and I’m the portrait photographer over at Gypsy x Company for all the dreamers and lovers of love. I live near the beach in South Florida with my filmmaker husband and baby girl. Elopements and intimate weddings are my latest adventure, but moody portraits will always have a place in my portfolio. It’s pure art — and I like the things that make people feel something, to create a mood within a photograph people can interpret and connect with. This photo comes across as intentional, both in pose and timing, but it was quite the opposite. It was spontaneous and unplanned, and sometimes that combination can make magic happen. The shot was taken during a modeling beach shoot. It was pitch black when we arrived on Jupiter Island, but within minutes the sky turned deep blue with a bit of magenta on the horizon. I’ve done enough sunrise shoots to know you’ve got to prep while it’s still dark. I assembled my Canon gear together: 5D Mark III with my favorite lens, the 50mm f/1.2L. I have more equipment in my camera bag, but intuition tells me this is all I need. A few minutes later, the light has become an assortment of pastel colors, and we shoot without pause. As the sun starts to rise over the ocean, I have the model lie down on the sand to do a few poses. The tide ebbs and flows, leaving pretty traces of sea foam behind. She looks like a mermaid out of water. I was in the middle of adjusting my shutter speed when we both saw the wave. It hit before we could move. The cold water covered everything but her hair. I repositioned myself for the sun to backlight her as she held the bed sheet around herself. The settings were left the same after the water receded to get the shot: ISO 100, aperture f/1.8, shutter speed 1/3200. Later in editing, I noticed every element in the photograph connected with one another. The mood is a vulnerable calm — and I was left assured with this: even when the tide turns, sometimes you’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. @gypsyxcompany
