HOP ON! Damn Good Beer Bus Launches In Palm Beach County By Danny Wright

W

e’ll get right to the point… how’d you like to jump on a bus with your friends, sample some great craft beers and visit some of our area’s breweries? The Damn Good Beer Bus is rolling around Palm Beach County taking craft lovers on public and private tours. In fact, if you go on a public tour, your first round is included at each brewery. Not only do you get to let someone else do the driving, you’ll get a fun, informative, and laid-back experience at each stop. Public tours usually hit 3 breweries and last 3-4 hours, but if you want something different, you can arrange your own private tour. Plus, if you purchase beer at one of the stops the bus provides cold storage. Nice.

What You Don’t Know About Your Backyard A Near 100-Tree Grove Immersed In Delray Beach By Savannah Sheehan

Long-time local, Jonathan Breines, dreamed this whole concept up and launched Damn Good Beer Bus this past April. His vision was “to showcase the incredible scene, brews, and people making this beer community so great.” Damn, we’re glad you did!

S

outh Floridians were given an extraordinary gift this month gratis of the members of Community Greening, TD Bank Funder Green Streets, Delray’s Parks and Rec Director, citizens of the community and more for the recent planting of 70 fruit trees in Delray Beach off of Atlantic Ave and Linton Blvd. Community Greening is an organization whose focus is to plant trees in order to combat the ecological effects of climate change and to promote our communities to keep our land clean and “green” for the earth, ourselves, and future inhabitants of this world. Co-founder of the organization, Mark Cassini, interviewed community members of Delray on what kind of trees they’d like to see planted. A mixture of public opinion, climate, and ecological history, the trees selected include guava, mango, papaya, avocado, and more. The fruits that these trees yield are all accessible to the public.

Be sure to check out the Brew Loop going on every Sunday in Boynton Beach, where the bus loops between all four of Boynton’s breweries all day for only $5.

One of the board members of Community Greening and local sustainable farmer and farming advocate, Farmer Jay—also known as Jason McCobb, shared with me the gripping experience of witnessing an expansive variance of people who came together and planted almost 100 trees in an hour and half.

or email info@damngoodbeerbus.com.

It is of paramount importance to recognize the ecological challenges we face and to support action taken or to take action in improving quality of life for all around us, including plants and animals.

hotography has ruined me.

It’s forced me to be patient, to wait for a moment which has made me late countless times. It’s forced me to shut out all my fears, to remain calm, and be comfortable in the most dangerous or sketchiest of situations. It’s forced me to stop and stare at the original and ordinary to find the beautiful and whimsical no matter what I’m doing or where I should be. CIVIL SOCIETY BREWING’S HOPPY AND UNFILTERED SUCCESS BY DOUG FAIRALL

T

he New Urbanist, and masterfully planned, downtown of Abacoa in Jupiter is not quite where you’d expect to find the new “it” brewery. But then again, stranger things have happened. Civil Society Brewing opened in late 2015, and has racked up interest with its hazy IPAs ever since. They’ve been the envy of beer traders across Instagram, labelled a “Brewery to Watch” by DRAFT Magazine in 2016, and were ranked number five by RateBeer on its list of “Top 10 Best New Brewers in the World” in 2017. According to Karl Volstad, one of the owners of Civil Society, along with cousin and former Miami Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad and longtime friend Evan Miller, these are all accolades that they never anticipated, and never really sought out to garner. “It’s flattering,” Volstad says, “but it’s business as usual. We do the best that we can do. All this other stuff we had no foresight that it would happen… but it’s been great for the brewery.” Set up in a retail bay across from Jumby Bay, the 5,600 square foot brewery has been cranking out unfiltered IPAs, saisons, and porters since its doors opened. Experience from over eight years of homebrewing, as well as a disdain for their previous day jobs, brought the Palm Beach Gardens natives to opening up their own slice of paradise. “We didn’t like our jobs as much and thought brewing would be a lot more fun. It’s infinitely better than doing anything else that I’ve done in the past. Given the alternative, I’d much rather be doing this. [The old job] was quite a bit easier in hindsight.” But it’s the beer that gets people through the door and have gotten them national attention – hazy and unfiltered tropical hop-forward India pale ales have brought them to the forefront of the brewing world, joining breweries like Trillium, The Alchemist, and Tree House Brewing in the minds of hopheads. >>

BEER

These, dare I say, “juicy” beers are one of the chapters in the hop-lovers Bible. Sometimes brewed with oats or wheat, and almost always generously dry hopped (hops are added while the beer is resting in the tanks), produces incredible aromas and a noticeable haze. Because many of the breweries that produce this style are located up north, they’ve been referred to as New England-style IPAs. Though seemingly intentional, Civil Society came to fruition with a focus on beers that they just happened to be brewing at home

— making great beers in a style that also just happened to be one of the hottest in craft beer in the last couple of years. “We were home brewing unfiltered... experimenting with these same types of hops on the homebrew scale. I can count on one hand how many times I had clear beer…Clarity is the furthest thing from your mind. When we got to starting brewing [commercially], we scaled the recipes and it continued that way. We aren’t doing anything different.” The good news for South Floridians is that

Visit the brewery at 1200 Town Center Dr, Unit 101, Jupiter, FL | @ civilsocietybrewing

28

@ATLANTICCU R R E NT

they don’t have to travel to Massachusetts or Vermont to experience fresh hoppy beer that’s “en vogue.” Civil Society’s taproom allows anyone the chance to feel like they’re up north – from the street art styled murals, to the cooler feel of the tasting room space, which is full of blues and greys. So when you grab a beer, whether it’s Pulp, a hoppy wheat ale, or Juice, a hoppy double IPA, or even their blonde ale, Blondes Make Me Hoppy, raise it up to the hop. “IPA is our thing,” Volstad said. “Everything we do is hopped up.”

BULK_STYLES AVOIDING ARREST, GOING LEGIT AND FORMING A CAREER VIA SPRAY PAINT BY DAVID ROLLAND

30

@ATLANTICCU R R E NT

I

n the dozen years since Mark Bulks started spray painting, the Jupiter resident has found himself in some tight spots. Painting highways, bridges, and abandoned buildings illegally, or as he’d prefer to term it “without permission,” he’s courted danger and arrest, but only once did he fear for his life. “I was on a rooftop in Tallahassee of a check cashing store and a tattoo place. My buddy was below me tying paint to a rope when I cut myself on sheet metal. Blood was squirting everywhere. I must have cut a vein. I had to slide down a pipe and we went into the tattoo shop - it was like midnight. They must have thought I got shot, but they helped clean me up before I went to the hospital to get I don’t know how many stitches.” Though the now 27-year old artist does most of his work by commission in his studio in Tequesta, there were many years when his need to express himself was an illegal operation. “I’ve had to do a lot of running. Somehow, I never got caught. There was one night

where I had to hide under boats until the sun rose, surrounded by spiders until the cops and sheriffs went away, but knock on wood I never once got arrested.” It is more than luck in how he’s escaped apprehension. Bulks says he stays disciplined making sure to always wear gloves so he won’t be caught red (or green, or yellow) handed. Most important is being particular with which artists he collaborated with. “If I paint with someone and I don’t like how they get to spots or how they act when they paint, I won’t go out with them again. A lot of people drink and paint, but I think your work suffers if you do that.” Bulks says his love of art is in his genes. His mom, Alison Bulks, owned an art gallery in New Jersey before she moved with Mark to Jupiter when he was seven. Bulks was always drawing, and at 15, he picked up his first spray can. “My mom is single-handedly the reason I stuck with art. >> TH EATLANTICCU R R E NT.COM

“I’ve had to do a lot of running. Somehow, I never got caught.” Photo: Dustin Wright

You couldn’t buy spray paint until you were 18. A lot of my friends’ parents wanted them to knock it off. They had to steal their paint. I’d make a list and my mom would roll over to The Home Depot and buy it for us.” Bulks’ art, which you can see on his Instagram page @bulk_styles, is something he’s constantly trying to improve and build upon, claiming his recent renditions in Lake Park of a dinosaur and one of King Kong are two of his favorites. “I always try to push my art and move it forward. My most recent art is going to be what I’m most proud of, or I hope it is because that means I’m progressing.” Though he does sometimes look at his early work for a perverse form of inspiration. “I look back at my work when I was young and wonder ‘what was I thinking?’ I must have really been motivated to keep going for it.” Though he knows many artists move to big cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Miami, no place moves his creative juices quite like Jupiter. “I work better when it’s quiet - my head is clear. When I did work in Miami, I felt like I was surrounded by noise. Here I can be me. There are no other graffiti artists for miles and I can get to work.”

MAKIN’ THE BACON BACON BOXES’ LOGAN RAE AND KIMMIE HRUDA SHARE THE LOVE BY DARIEN DAVIES

F

lowers are overrated, luncheons take too long, and you can’t eat a Hallmark card. Introducing Bacon Boxes – a gift that is also tasty. Logan Rae and Kimmie Hruda, aged 22 and 29 respectively, created the company after delivering a bacon bouquet to a busy office as a birthday gift in January of 2015. They quickly began to receive Facebook messages and texts inquiring about the product, which is when they had their “ah hah” moment. Because who doesn’t drool over bacon, right? By February, they had their test market and rapidly began product development. They officially launched in November of that same year, becoming the first company under the Department of Agricultural licensing to produce bacon roses. To make it perfectly clear, their bacon isn’t your average, swing-by-the-aisle-two slices. The bacon is cured, smoked, and sliced by hand. They even source their meat from 18 pasture-raising, family-owned farms throughout the U.S. that utilize a higher standard of animal care and product production. The meat is free of hormones, steroids, antibiotics and has never touched foot in a farrowing or gestation crate. Their customer base varies, but includes anyone who wants to send a heartfelt and delicious gift to anyone they love, and they stay busy year-round. However, they’re in full “swine” demand for Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day and during the Winter holidays. Bacon is a $4 billion industry and grows annually and frequently sells out. They even have an entire wedding collection and are able to accommodate most special requests (think…bacon bouquet).

FOOD

For people who eat bacon every day, they never get tired of thinking about it. They began with bacon roses, but quickly expanded into a stemmed option, and are now working on their latest product: Bloody Mary bacon. They look forward to continual expansion and are open to the possibility of adding a brick and mortar and tasting room to their portfolio. They are definitely going HAM for some ham, and don’t plan on slowing down. Kimmie currently orchestrates the kitchen and ensures order fulfillment and product quality meet their high standards, while Logan completes her neuroscience degree, with a graduation date later this year. They love being able to provide a unique – and delicious – gift for their customers, many of whom call to thank them and order more, or even sign up for a bacon subscription. The possibilities are endless and they are thinking outside of the box with their private bacon bars for parties, bacon cookies and brownies, and even a beer pairing event at Barrel of Monks this past May. If you’re interested in getting more Vitamin Bacon in your life, just remember: Roses are red, Violets are blue, The best kind of flowers Are the ones you can chew.

NOMAD SURF SHOP ROLLS OUT THEIR TAKE ON A FOOD TRUCK BY SAVANNAH SHEEHAN

L

“There’s nothing on A1A from Deerfield to Palm Beach where people can get a smoothie or something healthy.”

ocated on North Ocean Boulevard in Boynton Beach, Nomad Surf Shop knows a thing or two about the surf industry’s longevity. Opening its doors in 1968, Nomad – a family owned and operated surf shop – has proffered all the essential ocean-preparedness equipment, surfboards and surf accessories for the last 5 decades. Having made their mark on the industry, Nomad continues to influence the community in the camps and events they host as well as the surfboards they shape and create. They have even taken on a new venture into the culinary field with the launch of Nomad Surf Juice and Coffee. If you’ve ever been strolling down A1A, or

38

@ATLANTICCU R R E NT

lounging on the beach, and felt the sudden urge for a revitalizing, fresh smoothie, or a caffeine pick-me-up, then you’re on the same wavelength (pun intended) as owner and manager, Ryan Heavyside, who says, “There’s nothing on A1A from Deerfield to Palm Beach where people can get a smoothie or something healthy.” Having been raised in Nomad and a surfer himself, Ryan experienced the drawback from the lack of health-minded food options close to the beach. When engaging in any activity, nourishment is paramount and when Florida hits high temperatures of 98 degrees, something thirst-quenching and replenishing is quintessential.

FOOD

Photos: Dustin Wright

Addressing the need for a smoothie and juice bar was the first step. Ryan then linked up with Robert Malone, who has honed years of culinary experience at restaurants like 32 East and Tryst. The duo came together to create a menu of fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables for smoothies, juices, and acai bowls. For coffee fanatics, the piece de resistance may be the wide selection found at their organic coffee bar. The “Café on Wheels” will not be limited to one singular menu, changing with the availability of fruits as nature permits. A surf shop specific adage will be the availability of surf wax and sunscreen for purchase before Nomad opens its doors at 10am.

This yet to be defined comestible vessel is literally a truck, but from the looks of it, one might not use such nomenclature. For all intents and purposes, it is a, “… functioning food truck, but not your typical food truck,” states Ryan. “There is a lot of detail, from the walnut counter tops to the split surfboard for the ‘mixing station.’” The family at Nomad exist within a community indulged in the ocean, family, and all that brings those two worlds together. Although the “Café” is a restaurant of sorts, it plays highly into the history and foundation of the surf shop.

Commencing its opening this past Memorial Day Weekend, Nomad Surf Juice and Coffee’s summer hours will be Thursday through Sunday, 8 am to 2 pm. The truck will be stationed at times, but do not fret, The Nomad mobile will soon be the healthy alternative at local festivals, surf camps, and other events in the area. Visit the truck at 4655 N Ocean Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL @nomadsurfjuiceandcoffee

SOUND WAVES AND OCEAN SWELLS BRETT STASKA PROVES THAT PASSIONS CAN PAY THE BILLS BY SAVANNAH SHEEHAN

Photos: Kevin Flett

I

s “Living the Dream” really as easy as it seems? Brett Staska seems to think so, or rather, is doing exactly that. Florida native, Brett Staska, has made a name for himself in the music biz and likewise in the surf industry. Colliding two worlds, two passions, and making a living pursuing those two epitomizes a day in the life of Brett.

“I survive off playing gigs — it’s a humble dream” @brettstaska

A vast majority of Floridians take to surfing. Whether it be as a hobby or as a serious sport, the accessibility of water-sports is abundantly clear to our adventure seeking residents. Brett was among one of those who started surfing for fun, but fun soon turned into entering contests and gaining recognition for his affluence in the sport. Most recently he won the Log Jam Surf Contest in Jupiter, nose-riding his way to victory. Now, he is sponsored by Vans and Ocean Magic and gets to travel the country and world doing what he loves. If Brett isn’t traveling for surf, he is probably on the road to his next show. “I survive off playing gigs — it’s a humble dream.” As a solo artist, Brett has played shows at local venues like Saltwater Brewery and Guanabanas, but he is not confined to Florida. Embarking on a journey west, Brett is headed to California to play numerous

shows throughout the state. “I like to travel as much as possible, play music, and try to surf.” Classifying his music as folk rock, Brett is a multi-instrumentalist which attunes to his music with a very organic, melodic sound. Curating his own success, Brett paved his own path. In 2015 he released his debut EP titled No Worries — an impelling feat for a solo artist who represents himself. Brett, however, remains grounded and humbled, “I make the comparison a lot with music and surfing. They both don’t have any boundaries.” Pursuing two seamless passions with exponential opportunity is both nerve racking and gratifying, but most of all, admirable. Brett will be taking California by storm and will not be stopping any time soon.
