Changing the Climate on Climate Change Through Art

Photo: Alexis Paige Delray Beach has always been the artsy city with a small-town vibe filled with people who simply care. That is why it’s the perfect host for Rise: Climate and Art Weekend, an event that aims to bring awareness about climate change through the arts. Coinciding with the yearly occurrence of the King Tides—the highest tide of the year—this weekend of climate education outreach, put on by the City of Delray Beach, will take place Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5, with a goal to raise awareness about the impact of climate change and the need to proactively adapt. The event is slated to be the most ambitious and inclusive public outreach project to date, and will engage a broad segment of the community on the climate issue by presenting its challenges and opportunities through various mediums of art.

The event features art in all different mediums, but all pulling inspiration from the issue of climate change. Photography, improv, music, skits, sculptures, painting, and even adult beverages are just some of the outlets that will be showcased. These events will be scattered throughout downtown Delray in landmarks such as Sandoway House, the Cornell Museum, Arts Warehouse, Art Garage, and Delray Beach Public Library. You’re also invited to indulge in a Climate-themed Happy Hour Cocktail at Dada, Honey, Death or Glory, Banyan, and more, where you can enjoy special happy hour pricing on specialty climate-themed drinks. Leave this weekend with a newfound (or renewed) appreciation for our planet. You can view the full event calendar at www.delraybeachfl.gov/Rise

Discoverer of the Titanic Keynotes at the 11th Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon Being blue has never been so great. For the 11th year, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is hosting the Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon which is set to take place on October 25th at The Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. This event recognizes and awards four individuals along with a business or nonprofit that has engaged in strengthening our oceans, beaches, and wildlife. This year’s keynote speaker is most famous for discovering the RMS Titanic shipwreck in 1985 through one of the most technically advanced and informative expeditions ever led. Dr. Robert Ballard is rightly titled National Geographic’s Explorer-in-Residence along with oceanographer and underwater explorer. Dr. Ballard’s presentation will touch on innovation, exploration, and discovery while sharing stories from his career, which included 125 logged ocean explorations. Each of the five awards has a focus, but all are given to a person or business who has shown significant contribution in ocean and marine conservation. The Eleanor Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has contributed through his/her work or volunteer activities. Blue Ambassador of the Year Award is for an individual who has contributed through volunteer activities. Blue Friends of the Year Award is for an individual who has contributed through his/her work activities. Blue Hatchling Youth Award recognizes a student up to the 12th grade who has contributed through volunteer-related activities. Blue Business of the Year Award is awarded to a business who has shown to have contributed conservation or restoration of marine life or ecosystems through the business’ practices, products, or technology.

or Travis Suit, it’s all about fighting for the cystic fibrosis community and families. He feels that he owes everything to all of the “CF Warriors” who have come and gone, fighting every day, for the future of cystic fibrosis. This path is something that he never thought he would be on, but if you’re Travis, you think big change, big impact and big result. In 2011 when his daughter Piper was 4 years old, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis after several bouts with chronic sickness, which eventually led to a case of walking pneumonia, which is what ultimately tipped off the doctors to test her for CF. “When your child is diagnosed with a terminal disease, it can be very overwhelming, and really cast a dark shadow of doubt on life,” said Suit, 35. “It took me two years to really get over the initial diagnosis and start to understand the CF community and figure out a way I could leverage my skillsets and experience to create something to help contribute to making a difference.” That he did. He and three other guys (one paddleboard coach, one random guy who wanted to get on board, and one best friend who

had never set foot on a board) paddled the first Crossing for a Cure in 2013 merely as an idea to not only create a means of promoting the health benefits of the ocean for people with CF, but also as a way to fundraise for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Fibrosis (X4CF), had four paddlers in 2013, 34 paddlers in 2017, 100 paddlers in 2018, 220 in 2019, and they’re aiming for 400 paddlers in 2020. Together, they’ve gone from $15,000 in fundraising to more than $635,000 in just a few short years.

“When we did the Crossing the first year, I really had no intention of it becoming an annual event. However, after a few more years of our family and Piper going through some really challenging times with the disease, including three long-term hospitalizations where Piper ended up with a feeding tube and long term IV port, it dawned on me that there are so many other CF families out there going through the same thing,” Suit said. “There is very little support for the families, which is why, in 2017 we relaunched the Crossing event and opened it up to the public to participate and fundraise. We also launched Piper’s Angels Foundation that same year and have never looked back.”

The event itself is a sight to see, too. All participants arrive in Bimini, mostly by boat, early in the week on Wednesday. There’s a few days of fun in the sun with a structured itinerary that includes check-in, a pre-party on the beach, movie night, mandatory safety briefings, scavenger hunt, and socializing. They then prepare to leave at midnight on Friday night in the dark. A lot of participants take it easy not trying to over exert themselves before the big day, but others, including the captains and crew, go out fishing, diving, snorkeling, and paddling in the beautiful waters of Bimini.

There is absolutely no need to look back when you consider the massive change that the Foundation and supporters are bringing to the CF community. The mission of the Piper’s Angels Foundation is to support and improve the lives of people in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness through education, offering life expanding activities, providing urgent financial support, and funding critical research. The event, now called The Crossing for Cystic

20

After what is likely to be the longest day of the participants’ lives, out of sight of land, and on the open ocean paddling for 12 to 16 hours across 80 miles, the group is welcomed back home to Lake Worth Beach in Palm Beach County where there is a huge “Beach Landing” event that takes place. There is an epic finish line crossing, music, vendors, sponsors, and a lot of emotional friends and family waiting for their loved ones who have survived one of the toughest events in the world.

“There is a kaleidoscope of feelings you experience on the Crossing and it can be an emotional rollercoaster. At times you’re feeling scared, excited, defeated, humble, grateful, and victorious, all in the same day,” Suit said. “It’s a major commitment of time, training, and resources to make this Crossing as a participant, and we want every single person involved to know how grateful we are they step up in such a big way to help us fight for our CF families.” For the 2020 Crossing, they’ll be taking over the entire island of Bimini, filling every hotel room and boat dock, which, Suit says, provides a rare event opportunity where more people creates even more excitement and intimacy. They are also aiming to produce a full-length feature educational film documentary about the event and the benefits to the ocean for people with CF, and Suit is excited to have everyone be a part of that. Piper, who is now 11 and hasn’t had a long-term hospitalization in almost two years, joins the supporters every event at Bimini, and Suit says that it’s a very proud experience they share in watching the event and community around the organization and mission grow. “As her father, I am deeply and sincerely proud of her maturity, patience, and spirit in how she handles her CF, and also being a mini celebrity to everyone involved. She takes it all in stride and is our guiding light,” Suit said.

22

Suit hopes that the event becomes sustainable as a world class event that empowers people to improve their lives through a big challenge while creating further sustainability for the organization and programs as a platform of advocacy for the CF community. “Cystic Fibrosis has taught us three valuable lessons: to be bold in the face of fear, cherish the good days, and inspire every breath. These are lessons we take to heart because we aren’t just inspiring those in the CF community, we are leveraging the inspirational stories of these amazing CF Warriors to inspire everyone to live a fuller life,” Suit said. “We are taking something that can be so incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, and doing our best to make the most of it, and that’s not just a recipe for CF, that’s a recipe for life. When your perceived problems become your gifts, you’ve transcended the suffering into success.” If you’re able to get on board for those who can’t, and make a change for those who need it, mark your calendars for Father’s Day weekend, June 20, 2020, and be a part of the legacy. hen asked how he got the idea for a world record trash removal, Arilton Pavan, the owner of the Deerfield Beach dive shop, Dixie Divers, was a bit taken aback. “Trash removal?” he asked with a laugh. “That makes us sound like a janitorial service. This was an underwater cleanup.” After organizing 633 divers to pick up more than 2,500 pounds of trash this past June, Pavan certainly earned the good karma to call his yearly activity whatever he likes. Pavan has been organizing underwater cleanups around the Deerfield Beach piers for the last 15 years. Three years ago he had a promotional brainstorm on how he could attract more people to clean up the Atlantic. “I decided if I called [Guinness World Records], I could attract more people as volunteers. So three years ago we broke the record for the longest underwater chain. A couple months later, a group in Australia beat us. Last year we did the chain again and beat Australia with 386 divers. Afterward we did the cleanup.” For the 2019 cleanup, Pavan decided to make the cleanup the record. He would break the record of the most undersea divers to >>

take part in a cleanup, which was set by a group of 614 divers in Egypt, which took 24 hours to set. Pavan was able to corral 633 divers to beautify the ocean of Deerfield Beach in only two hours, while another 250 volunteers helped with the beach cleanup. “We picked up plastic, wood, steel, a dumbbell weight. Somebody used that to sink a body, I guess,” he said with a laugh before getting more serious of the damage done to our water. “We picked up so many pounds of lead that all the sinkers from fishing accumulates. We picked up miles and miles of fishing line that are real hazards to sea turtles.” According to the City of Deerfield Beach, the total weigh-in included 1,826 pounds of lead, 102 pounds of fishing line, and 645 pounds of miscellaneous items including fishing poles, knives, wood, metal fragments and more. Seeing all the litter coming from fishing, Pavan would love to see a day when piers were shared evenly with divers. “There should be days for fishing and days for diving. There’s so much marine life under the pier.” Pavan is proud of the global media attention the world record has brought to the cleanup. “There’s so much negativity about global warming, pollution, red tide. We need to do something positive,”

26

@ATLANTICCU R R E NT @atlanticcurrent

he said. “The main goal of this is the environment. It’s like how a musical show raises money for a charity like AIDS. We use the world record to get more people to come out and clean up.” It took a lot of organizational prowess along with help from the diving community to get 633 divers in the water on that Saturday morning. “It’s not easy to do. You have to pay Guinness $15,000. People think you get money from Guinness to break a record, but you have to pay them to use their name and to fly down a judge to verify the record,” he said. To spread the word over the six months preceding the event, Pavan depended on his rival dive shops and local university dive clubs at Nova and FAU, along with the nonprofit ocean cleanup organization, Project AWARE. Together, sponsors and participants helped pay the hefty fee. All the publicity brought do-gooder divers from across the globe. “Only 20% were locals, while 80% came from out of the area. Lots from Tampa and Orlando, a big group from Miami. Groups from Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Texas. We had one guy from Brazil, another from Colombia. Canada and Europe, too,” he said. The attention from the event had Pavan even field calls from other areas looking to hold their own similar ocean cleanups. >>

THE OCEAN ISSUE

Beyond leaving the ocean a more pristine place, Pavan was pleased the event brought a more diverse population to put on scuba gear. “This was very positive for scuba diving. We attracted lots of young divers, which is a big thing,” he said. “Diving shows are usually all old people. This event brought lots of teenagers, people in their 20s, and families with kids looking to get certified for next year’s event.”

28

@atlanticcurrent

Next year? Does this mean they will try to get more than 633 divers to clean up Deerfield Beach’s pier in 2020? ”Every year we try to do something new. I don’t think it makes sense to break the same record,” he said. “I’m looking at some other ideas. We want to do something special for next year. We want to keep pushing to get more people involved.”

When they finally found the old, baby blue building just off the train tracks in the heart of the Fat Village neighborhood at 280 S.W. Sixth St., there was no looking back.

travels through Fort Lauderdale. It’s also a name Fine used in 1999, but a previously trademarked New River Pale Ale prompted the change, which includes a marriage between The Restaurant People founder Tim Petrillo’s Tarpon Bend brand and Julian’s growing family of Riverside Market beer-themed eateries.

The couple opened Tarpon River Brewing in February 2018, but the idea to bring the brewery to Fort Lauderdale began much earlier when they partnered with Native Brewing Company and Fresh Beer founder Adam Fine to manage Craft Beer Cartel. In addition to being a craft beer market and home brewing center, the trio used the space as a nano-brewing facility for test recipes that would later appear on Tarpon’s tap lineup.

Today, Tarpon River Brewing head brewer Daniel Kastner is the star of the show. An avid home brewer and graduate of Miami’s Master Brewery Academy, he provides a constantly rotating selection of brews for the brewery’s Cracker House restaurant and tasting room.

Some might recall Julian’s original plan to name their project New River, which was an ode to the city’s New River, a main artery that

“This brewery gives us the freedom to explore everything from barrel-aged ales to crisp, clean lagers and mixed-fermentation sour beers,” said Fine, who is known as a godfather of South Florida craft beer not only because of his 20-year brewing history but also

because he’s the founder of the area’s first craft beer distribution company, Fresh Beer, which later became Brown Distributing. A total of 16 rotating taps offer guests a chance to taste everything from the Hopsta La Vista double IPA and Honey Love imperial cream ale to the Morning Express coffee stout and Fine’s old-school Native lager. One beer in particular has already earned accolades despite the brewery’s short year-and-a-half existence: a 2019 gold medal from the Florida Brewer’s Guild for Kastner’s berliner-style Prickly Pear Zinger margarita-inspired sour. Today, it’s more than the beer that drives people in droves to Fort Lauderdale’s fifth brewery. “It’s the epitome of what a South Florida brewery should be,” Julian said. Each month a full calendar of daily events ranges from movie night and trivia to yoga and Zumba classes, even Taco Tuesday. An equally alluring live music lineup brings national, regional, and local acts to the brewery Friday through Sunday, featuring everything from a one-man-band to larger groups like the Coppertones, Deep Love, and Crazy Fingers.

Tarpon River’s 11,000-square-foot warehouse was originally constructed as the Snyder Stables in the early 1920s, which was a historical space that once housed the horses used to help pave the roads that helped urbanize Fort Lauderdale. The result is a brewery with a distinctive Old Florida design that includes a 1,000-squarefoot house built with reclaimed and restored barn wood complete with a gift shop and a crowler-filling station, as well as a bar that serves a dizzying array of craft brews. The in-house restaurant is one of a growing number of South Florida brewery’s to offer its own brewpub-style menu of eats, yet stands alone as the one serving all three meals starting at 10am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, through lunch and dinner. Don’t miss the brewery’s Sunday brunch, served 10 am to 3 pm every Sunday, featuring unlimited mimosas (and beermosas) for $15 per person. A few feet away, an outdoor patio exposes you to the tropical weather year-round, while a barrel-lined private event space is home to team brewing classes, weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, and pretty much any other celebration you can imagine at a brewery. “Tarpon has a little bit of something for everyone,” Julian said. “It’s the ultimate South Florida brewery.” 280 SW 6th St, Fort Lauderdale @tarponriverbrewing

DE ATH OR GLORY, NOT JUST ANOTHER STORY BY ADAM SHEETZ

I

f you don’t know about Death or Glory, you should, and I’m about to tell you why. It’s one of the hippest haunts in town and sits just off the beaten path in Delray Beach, making it a little hidden, a little mysterious, and very rewarding. Their moniker essentially says, “Go big or go home,” which is exactly what they’re doing. The owners got the name from a 1979 Clash song, which was written about the previous generation of rock stars who swore they would die before getting old. They live by the same motto, which is to never give up, never grow old, and always support the people you serve. It’s not only their livelihood, but also their life. “Plus, we’re all old punk rock kids at heart,” said Annie Blake, a Death or Glory partner. Given that it is a quaint, little old house, it’s rather unassuming from the street. But just on the other side of their charming entryway lies an experience not soon to be forgotten. “Our major inspiration for the vibe was the house itself. The historic Falcon house was built in 1925. There are a lot of little nooks and crannies, and it has a ton of charm,” Blake said. “We decorated it in such a way that the details

36

@atlanticcurrent

are nuanced but pleasantly surprising. We filled the house with family photos from that era, as well as some prohibition-era memorabilia, as south Florida was a big part of the rum running trade.” You can get a big sense of the rum-influenced space when you head outside to the canopied bar that features a rum-focused menu that pays homage to the rum runners of the Florida 1920s, and tips its hat to the whimsy of Tiki, which made it’s way through South Florida some 30 years later. The authentic tiki bar is the brainchild of partner, Ayme Harrison, who previously owned Kreepy Tiki in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to their funky sense of space, they also feature a killer cocktail and food menu. “Most restaurants will tell you to come for the food and stay for the drinks. We know you’ll come to Death or Glory for the drinks and be pleasantly surprised when you stay for the food,” Blake said. “One of the most integral keys to a successful cocktail program is the use of quality spirits and fresh ingredients. Beyond that, we also like to invest in our staff, their knowledge, and our respect as a team for the product that we provide our guests. We place a lot of importance on the knowledge of classic cocktails,

balance, and the proper use of tools to achieve consistency.” This attention to detail can be tasted with every sip of every unique drink on the menu. Just try for yourself with a signature cocktail like the Trader Vic’s 1944 Mai Tai, made with their own Death or Glory House Rum. And if you and your crew are feeling adventurous, they offer communal cocktail bowls for four to six people. All of these elements are at the forefront of their operation, and they do not go unnoticed by guests. It’s not hard to see that their main passion lies in their drinks, and they are fortunate to have expert, David Bouchard, as their beverage director. Now, running the kitchen is their executive chef, Johnny Martini - or, more formally known as Chef John P. Demartini. The food can be described as New American, focusing on fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced ingredients. The discerning selection of ingredients shines through in dishes like their Rock Shrimp Ceviche Lettuce Wraps or their Mushroom Enfrijoladas. The entire menu is based on local ingredients so not only does it change every few months, you’re almost always guaranteed to enjoy the freshest flavors around. Now, if you’ve been paying attention at all to the bar and craft cocktail scene, you may have heard of a little thing called Bar Brawls. Death or Glory just so happens to be the host establishment for the weekly bartender competition that spans over two months, and it’s quite the scene. Chock full of movers and shakers (or stirrers), industry experts and leaders, foodies, media, and spectators, this

38

@atlanticcurrent

spectacle of spirits is, at heart, a gathering of friends and family among the community, peppered with a bit of friendly competition. “We always wanted DoG to be a hub for the industry, and for education,” Blake said. “My partners and I are very involved both in the national cocktail community and with the local chapter of the United States Bartender’s Guild.” So what do these “old punk kids at heart” turned bastions of their craft envision for the future of Death or Glory? Blake and her partners’ hope is “to keep growing and pushing the envelope to maintain our home as a welcoming and exciting place for our guests while remaining fun and approachable. Cocktails should be seriously executed but I don’t think cocktail bars need to be serious.” The neon sign in their tiki bar that reads “Stop Making Sense” - yet another nod to a great piece of rock history - is nothing if not an indication of that goal. They’re well on their way to achieving their vision, all while shaking things up for Delray Beach and being a haven for locals who want to keep it weird. Take them up on their invitation to go big or go home, you won’t regret it. 116 NE 6th Ave, Delray Beach @deathorglorybar_delray

BAT TLE OF THE B OWLS Which local company packs the best? BY ALEXIS PAIGE

G

rrrr. No, that is not a bear behind you, that’s your stomach signaling for sustenance. But, before you start to choose between healthy and quick options for food, finish reading this article. It’s 2019, damn it, and you don’t need to compromise anymore! With three great options to choose from, it can be tough deciding at which one to stop. At first glance, Bolay, Fresh Kitchen, and Beehive are nearly identical. All three have a build-your-own bowl model with bases, veggies, proteins and sauces, with a health-conscience vibe on the side. But! Each fast-casual spot brings their own unique flavor to the table.

Prepared as fast as you can point out your desired ingredients, these Chipotle-inspired, fast-casual, brightly-colored restaurants are only growing in popularity, so you might as well find your favorite now. We’ve laid out the differences here, so it’s time to see which option entices your taste buds more.

@atlanticcurrent

B OLAY

Plopping down their pineapple logo all around South Florida, this Wellington-based casual dining spot is probably the most wellknown on this list. With an almost cult-following, you won’t be surprised to find avid diners getting their Bolay fix nearly every day, and maybe even all day. They are certified gluten-free, which is a sigh of relief to those with food sensitivities because this means there is no chance for cross-contamination.

Protein

Although diners are confident that their food won’t contain gluten, and vegan options are also labeled, those with other dietary restrictions such as nut, shellfish, and soy allergies will have to ask. Additionally, Bolay offers glass bowls and regular silverware to those who dine in, which avoids a ton of plastic waste. Kudos!

Sauce. It. Up. At Bolay, you have three sauces to choose from, including spicy Thai, carrot ginger, and cilantro pesto. Pro tip: if you ask nicely, they’ll toss your bowl with the sauce of your choice. To be honest, most meals at Bolay don’t require a sauce. For instance, if you go for the noodles, mushrooms, and either chicken — there’s plenty of flavor to go around sans sauce. But they don’t charge extra for sauce, so you may as well explore the flavor combos that they can provide.

Base

Your first duty as a customer is picking your base. If you opt for a small “bol” you get one base, for a large you get two bases, and a kid’s meal gets one base or one veggie. Bases can be hot Asian sweet potato noodles, kale salad, orange basil quinoa, forbidden black rice, and baby spinach, or Bolay-exclusive cilantro noodles and jasmine rice. Unique to Bolay, the noodles are served hot and pack some serious flavor. They also offer a spinach without dressing for those looking for a more light option. Once you’ve made your choice or two, on to the next!

Veggies

Balsamic mushrooms, ginger broccoli, herb roasted potatoes, garden green beans, and power beans are the star of the veggie show. Both small and large “bol” eaters get to pick two from this list. Since they are all vegan, the non-animal eaters can pick in peace. You’ll be able to find green beans, broccoli, and mushrooms at the other two restaurants, but the potatoes are exclusive to Bolay.

You have the option to choose from either lemon chicken, BBQ chicken, pork tenderloin or miso-glazed tofu as your protein. Or if you’d like to be a little extra, they also have steak au jus, spicy Thai shrimp, or ahi tuna for an upcharge. If you chose a small, you get one protein, and two if you chose a large.

Sauces

Add Ons

Finishing it off, small and large “bol”-ers both get one final scoop of either freshly-chopped cilantro, minted tomatoes, parmesan cheese, or, for an extra charge, avocado. For some, being able to add tomatoes free of charge is big perk of Bolay.

F RE SH KITCHEN

With their original location in Tampa, Fresh Kitchen brought some green goodies to Boca Raton in March of last year and have brought in a big crowd ever since. Don’t be surprised to find lines usually out the door during typical hungry hours. Even though each of their menu items has a bright “GF” next to it, they don’t claim to be completely gluten-free, just friendly. On top of the GF labeling, they also label their foods non-dairy friendly, vegan-friendly, and no-processed-sugar-added, on top of highlighting other common sensitivities like nuts. No matter what you scoop, your bowl will most likely turn out delicious. Each section has their unique flavor without conflicting with each other. So feel free to impulsively point at the first thing that sounds tasty and be confident that it’ll come out delicious at the end of the bowl making process. All bowls tend to let the ingredients do the talking and are not over seasoned. So if you find other bowl spots are a little heavy, then FK is probably the move.

42

@atlanticcurrent

Base

Take a deep breath, because FK offers eight bases including brown rice, spinach salad, kale slaw, vegetable quinoa, perfect spice rice, and sweet potato noodles, as well as clean green rice and cauliflower potato mash, which are their two signature bases. Both their “four” and “six” bowls allot you two bases, unlike Bolay that only gives one to the smaller bowl. Both the spinach salad and kale slaw are tossed in a light dressing, which is a bonus for those who feel the competition’s undressed greens are too plain.

Veggies

Choose from parmesan broccoli, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted mushrooms, or sesame green beans, or their FK-exclusive golden spice chickpeas. For the four bowl, you get to choose one veggie, and for the six bowl you get two.

Protein

Dig into grilled citrus chicken, baked almond chicken, BBQ chicken, chilled caprese tofu, and buffalo chicken, or enjoy herb grilled steak and chia seed tuna poke for an extra charge. These proteins are

filled with their own unique flavor that could hold their own or be enhanced with the sauce of your choice. Plus, they’re cut to slightly larger pieces than Bolay or Beehive, making it a little easier to snag that next piece of protein.

Sauces

Finally, finish off your bowl with your choice of creamy white ginger, herb balsamic vinaigrette, holy kale, coconut Sriracha or cucumber jalapeno. There’s a sauce for every mood, but the creamy white ginger is probably the most unique and highly demanded.

Add Ons

Extra sauce, bean and corn salsa, feta cheese, kale pesto tomatoes, and citrus avocado are all Fresh Kitchen exclusives. These are all “a little extra” but sometimes you just need those tomatoes or parmesan. But it should be noted that Bolay doesn’t charge extra for the two aforementioned items. So if those add ons are a must, it’s possible it may sway your choice of where to go.

Base

Smoky white beans, cranberry almond kale salad, and artisan mixed greens set Beehive apart, but they also carry baby spinach, lemon basil quinoa, sweet potato noodles, and whole grain brown rice. Note that Beehive also offers a couple of greens dressing free, if that’s what you’re into. Whether you opt for a small or large bowl, you get two bases.

Veggies

BEEHIVE KITCHEN Calling South Florida their home base, Beehive is working their way up from Broward. They promise four things: hormone-free, antibiotic-free and gluten-friendly (not free) food, and fresh cold press juices. Similar to Fresh Kitchen, they disclose common allergies next to each item, including soybeans, shellfish, fish and eggs. Beehive’s individual items are pretty seasoned and sauced, so you may find yourself opting out of a sauce at the end. Instead of randomly picking items like a child at a soda machine, try to think of a theme while making your bowl. It’ll come out way better, trust me.

Putting their own flavor into similar bases, Beehive offers garlic roasted broccoli, roasted sweet potatoes, wok seared mushrooms, and Szechuan green beans, with smoked paprika cauliflower and roasted Brussels sprouts being unique to them. Large bowls get two choices of veggies, while small bowls get one.

Protein

Choices include sesame citrus tofu, baked almond crusted chicken, Beehive BBQ pork, and rustic herb grilled chicken, or you can get marinated steak or ahi tuna poke for a couple dollars more. The only protein, in my opinion, that doesn’t have a distinct flavor is the rustic herb chicken, which has a slightly smoky taste, but not overpowering flavor. This could be good or bad thing depending on preference, but it is nice to have a protein that’s seasoned but generally flavor neutral.

Sauces

Their delicious sauce options include fresh herb dressing, roasted pepper sauce, Thai coconut curry, and Argentinian chimichurri. The roasted red pepper is quite popular, but the thai coconut curry is another great option. They come in smaller to go containers compared to the other spots, so why not throw a few in and get to testing.

Add Ons

Shaved parmesan cheese and queso fresco come at no charge, while the guacamole and herb-marinated tomatoes come at an extra cost. No matter what theme you go with, each of these toppings will most likely taste great.

@beehivekitchen 44

@atlanticcurrent

Now, after all of that, which healthy bowl spot is the best? Well, that’s up to you. One sauce, protein, or extra charge for an add on may be enough to sway you to one spot over another. It’s all about your preference and how you build your bowl. It’s quite possible the hot sweet potato noodles at Bolay are just too good for you to pass up. Maybe the almond chicken dipped in creamy white ginger at Fresh Kitchen gives your taste buds an emphatic high five. Or perhaps a fork full of spinach, rustic herb chicken and roasted red pepper sauce at Beehive gives you exactly the amount of flavor your healthy heart desires. The only way to truly find out is to try all three. Now go crazy and ball out with your bowl out!
