O EY CALD ERAI O S
elf-taught, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Joey Calderaio remembers the moment he fell in love with reggae. It was Guanabanas in 2012, where two bands — Iration and Ballyhoo! — were playing live. “Both were fairly new — I had only discovered them a few weeks prior — and that show was really inspirational to me and encouraged my love for that type of music,” recalls Calderaio. These days, it’s Calderaio who often takes the stage at Guanabanas, offering fans and locals a chance to hear his own unique mashup of rock, pop and reggae sounds inspired by his hometown. “Growing up in Jupiter by the beach, just by default, a lot of that music became part of my daily playlist after school surfing,” says Calderaio, who played in several bands throughout high school and beyond before starting a solo career. Early inspiration began in high school, when Calderaio discovered the sounds of Sublime, 311, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was a passion that later morphed into a full blown love affair with reggae, from roots music like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh to more contemporary bands like Tribal Seeds, Rebelution, and Stick Figure.

“I
was obsessed with Sublime, and it really motivated me to sing and play guitar. They also greatly inspired my love for reggae rock music,” says Calderaio. “But what I really fell in love with was the message behind the music — spreading positivity and love. I took that message and put my own musical spin on it, creating my own sound that’s not just reggae but more rock with reggae influences.” Calderaio has spent close to a decade on his craft, writing original songs while also learning how to mix, master, and produce his own music. Today, the Palm Beach County-based artist performs weekly. By blending genres — namely reggae, rock and pop — he performs multiple times each week, often as an acoustic solo act where he effortlessly juggles vocals and guitar while looping live guitar tracks and footing his own percussion to establish a big-band sound. Several days a week you can also find him accompanied by local artists who join him on stage to create anywhere from a two-piece jam session to a four-piece band. Local shows often feature smaller groups, while national shows offer up the sounds of a full six-piece band with a trumpet and added percussion. Much of his original work can be found on “Moving Mountains,” the first official project released under his solo name, Joey Calderaio. The collection of songs from early

in his career were on his laptop for years before they were shared and released as an EP in early 2019, working alongside Georgia-based producer and musician Ted Bowne of Passafire. Later that year he released two singles – “Déjà Vu” (Acoustic) and “Right in Front of You.” In March 2020, he teamed with Ted Bowne once again to release “Rise Up” (Remix), which features Bowne himself. “‘Moving Mountains’ is all about creating something bigger than just ourselves,” explains Calderaio. “It’s about making positive change. It can be tough, but it’s easier when you have a whole group behind you.” Today, with two EPs, a handful of singles under his belt, and music that’s been streamed more than 500,000 times on Spotify, Calderaio’s positive message is being embraced by thousands — and he’s beginning to see the fruits of his labor. This past summer, the artist was invited to perform in Utah for the Mountain High Vibes Festival in July, followed by a two-week tour in September that brought his band to Savannah, Myrtle Beach, and Virginia Beach. Most recently, he enjoyed a spotlight at the Reggae Rise Up Florida Music Festival that took place this past October in Saint Petersburg, Fla. >>

T HE M US I C I SS U E But it wasn’t without a lot of hard work. When the world shut down during the global pandemic, the artist refocused his efforts on growing his fan base, and building a national audience with his positive message and natural talent. “During the first few weeks of the pandemic, my gigs were getting canceled left and right. With all that downtime, I decided to focus on growing my social media presence,” says Calderaio, who launched an official Facebook fan page — Joey’s Bag of Donuts — as a way to connect with followers on a more personal level. The artist also used the free time to improve his craft. He began recording acoustic covers he mixed and mastered himself, creating one-man-band-style videos while playing multiple instruments and singing covers of fan-favorite jams. He released them via weekly YouTube videos, offering fans a way to stay connected — and inspired. The result: Calderaio was able to cultivate a loyal following on Instagram, YouTube, and his Facebook fan page.

MUSIC
This month, fans can enjoy Calderaio’s latest single release, “Runaway Lover.” The track was inspired by a dream, and from that intense emotion he put pen to paper. Like most of his work, it starts with a simple tune he records at home with just guitar and vocals, slowly building the melody with drums, bass, and a horn line. For this particular single, Calderaio added a real brass section with the help of artists Liam Robertson and Quinn Carson, and mastered by Big G Productions. “The song is about loss, but I wrote it from a standpoint that it could be about anyone or anything, from a family member to a broken relationship,” says Calderaio, who plans to release a string of singles over the next few years to create his first full-length album. “These days, a lot of my original music is how I express my thoughts and feelings — translating emotion into art.” Now — just as those early reggae songs did for him — his art is helping others to do the same.

“I
’ve received so many messages from people telling me a song helped them through a rough time,” says Calderaio. “That my songs are helping them get through their own emotional journey. What began as a personal growth process is evolving into music that is now helping others, and it’s incredible to see that process come full circle.” @joeycalderaio

Bryce Allyn Rutkowski was living
the rock star dream for more than a decade starting in the late ‘90s, first with Jupiter reggae rock band Boxelder, and then with B-Liminal. But for a man growing up and planning to be a dad it all got to be too much. “We were doing well. We’d tour with larger bands. Boxelder really had a cult following. There was a time when anywhere we played it was jamming,” Rutkowski told The Atlantic Current on a laid back Saturday night. “Our CDs were being sold in stores and we’d be able to pack a show pretty much anywhere in Florida. Every weekend would be driving up to Orlando for a show Thursday, then Gainesville on Friday and Tallahassee on Saturday.”

“I had a kid on the way. Years of partying took its toll. But I put myself together and dad-ed it up with two babies,” he answered. But there was one addictive habit Rutkowski couldn’t give up, which was playing music. “I started going back out playing an acoustic show on my own. Then I’d invite Mike (Kerr) to join me on guitar. Then Ryan (Weidenfeld) would drum with us. Next we’re calling Yaz (Velazquez), ‘Do you want to join us on bass?’ Before I knew it I had a full band playing together.” But then why isn’t it called the Bryce Rutkowski Band, since as far as you can tell from basic internet sleuthing no one in the band is named Allyn. “Allyn is my middle name,” he explained. “One reason is so people don’t stutter over my last name. But the main reason is because when I was little and I acted out of line my parents would call me Bryce Allyn. I thought it would show I’m taking this band more serious. I’m singing better than ever, I’m healthier than ever.” Rutkowski says Bryce Allyn Band shares similarities with Boxelder and B-Liminal, but there are some subtle differences. “Like the other bands, we’re still on the reggae and rock vibe, but we mix in a little more funk. We always come out with good vibes and love, and all the positive stuff I think music should be about.”
So far Bryce Allyn Band is mostly a live affair, with there only being one song available on streaming services, but Rutkowski is hoping to remedy that soon. “We’ve been trying to record a Bryce Allyn album for a while, but can’t quite get the funding together. We have four songs ready. We’re really hoping to have a single and video out for the song “It’s in my Head,” out this winter. We shot some great footage at Guanabanas and spliced in a nice story for a video.” That one released song previously mentioned was a wonderful experience for Rutkowski. He cut a cover of The Allman Brothers Band, “Midnight Rider” at Circle House Studios in Miami. “I was singing over The Inner Circle Band playing, you know them, they played that song ‘Bad Boys.’ I was in awe playing with the keyboardist who played with Bob Marley. Wayne Jobson, a.k.a. Native Wayne, produced us. I felt honored to be part of that project.” The Bryce Allyn Band has been able to share the stage with other legends. They opened concerts for both Steel Pulse and Toots and the Maytals. “That’s always massive respect. I’m there studying them, but I am nervous. What we do isn’t roots rock reggae, it’s more a reggae hybrid. So that makes me nervous around the reggae legends, >>

but we’ve always been well received. It’s intimidating, but also uplifting to share the stage with someone great.” This coming from someone who many view as a pioneer and legend of the Palm Beach County music scene. Rutkowski says, as a working musician supporting his family, he has to make some compromises that the legends don’t, and that he didn’t have to make when he was with Boxelder. “A lot of the gigs I play the venue can’t afford to pay a full band. I try to at least get them to pay for Mike Kerr. Hard to peel us two away from each other.” The other big difference is he’s more in demand to cover popular songs instead of playing his originals. “What a different experience. With Boxelder I could play all originals. Now, as a working musician, you’re background noise where they want covers. Me being creative, I still mix things up. I’ll do a ska version of Rod Stewart, make Bill Withers reggae or do a swing version of Aerosmith. It gives audiences insight into our sound and lets us be creative.” @bryceallynband

P olitics and religion. Plaid and
stripes. TikTok and Gen X. Some things just don’t pair well with each other. But what does indisputably go together is craft beer and live music. Mathews Brewing Company in Lake Worth offers both. “Live music and craft beer is the perfect pair,” attests owner David Mathews, not to be confused with musician Dave Matthews. “Live music provides our customers entertainment while enjoying local craft beer in a beer garden setting.” Since its inception in 2016, the brewery has always had live music, but Mathews recently made enhancements to their entertainment structure in November 2020. This included an elevated stage with a sound and
lighting system. A tiki hut was installed to cover the stage, creating a breezy, South Florida vibe. “We expanded our stage and covered it to have a professional outside live music experience for our guests,” Mathews explained. Mathews’ upbringing influenced his decision to merge beer and music together. Growing up in Tampa, the places he would frequent always played live music. “I just prefer listening to live music outside, so I made sure that I bought a building that also had an area that I could build a beer garden for live music,” he said. “It’s just more fun listening to local live music and having local craft beer with friends.” Although Mathews doesn’t play music himself, he does book all the bands >> t h e a t l a n t i c c u r r e n t . c o m 29

and brew the beer. One can say that life imitates art at the brewery, since a lot of the beers are named after songs. Black Metallic Irish Stout, Night Moves Amber Ale, and Sweet Emotion Cream Ale are just a few examples. Genres played at the brewery include mostly rock but also ska/reggae and pop country. Attendees may recognize some local bands that play regularly, such as Spred The Dub, The People Upstairs, Sons of a Tradesman, Artikal Sound System, 56 Ace Band, Project X, and Krazy Train. When asked what type of music Mathews would like to feature there in the future, he replied, “We are starting
to book more tribute bands, such as Completely Unchained [Van Halen], Still Alive [Pearl Jam], 46 & Tool [Tool], Products of Rage [Rage Against the Machine], and Hardwired [Metallica]. We are also starting to book opening bands that only play originals.” This makes sense, considering that some of Mathews’s favorite bands are Metallica, Tool, Pearl Jam, and Fuel.

For those interested in playing, Mathews advises to act swiftly. “We do book up very quick at Mathews Brewing Company since we have a regular rotation of bands,” he said. “Since we don’t typically charge a cover, we tend to book bands that have a big local fan base.” Inquiring musicians can email david@mathewsbrewingcompany.com.
Mathews Brewing Company further embodies living like a local with their motto and welcome attitude. “Our theme is ‘where craft beer meets rock and roll,’” said Mathews. “We are also family and dog friendly. We strive to bring the best live music and craft beer to Lake Worth Beach and South Florida.”
On Saturday, December 4, the brewery will be celebrating its four-year anniversary with Brewapalooza. The birthday-party-meets-music-fest will feature bands, craft beer special releases, and food trucks Silver Spork and Krazy Cuban Flavor. Still Alive, The Chili Poppers, 46 & Tool, and Jose Almonte will be the musical entertainment.
Live music is featured Thursdays from 7 to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 8 to 11:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8 to 11:30 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 6:30 p.m. 130 S. H St., Lake Worth @mathewsbrewingco

THE PE ACH A Delicious Marriage of Art and BBQ BY DARIEN DAVIES

f you’re hungry for a new experience that combines art, live music and the best barbeque in town, be sure to make a pit stop at The Peach. It’s more than a restaurant, more than a live music venue, way more than an art and culture destination, and it’s just what Palm Beach County residents are hungry for. “The uniqueness is in the concept itself, being an art and culture destination. We want people to come to The Peach and stay for a while since there is so much to take in,” said Craig McInnis, manager and resident artist at The Peach. “One of the most powerful aspects is the chance to see artists at work in their studios and the opportunity to speak with them about their process or any other points of interest. Also, some of the studios will be hosting classes, workshops and seminars, all open to the community. And not to mention the top-notch BBQ by Troy’s served from a reimagined carriage house.” >>

The goal for the space is to bring a new flavor (literally and figuratively) of art, culture and entertainment through dynamic events and monthly art walks, coupled with live music and creative vendors. Guests can expect to see a delicious array of different art forms within the six studios from more than 10 creatives, including 3D printing, virtual reality, art therapy, photography and more. But let’s not forget about the food. “What guests can expect is awesome BBQ and a great time,” said Anthony Barber, owner of Troy’s Barbeque. “Our menu will be the same but our West Palm Beach location will be home to first Sunday brunch, permanently.” Troy’s Barbeque has been proudly serving hungry patrons award-winning ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, chicken and homemade sides since 1996. Troy’s original location is in Boynton Beach, but Barber couldn’t resist opening up a location in West Palm Beach so he could partner with the Sub-Culture Group and be a part of creating a Wynwood-type vibe.
The restaurant has indoor and patio seating (that’s dog friendly!), and the performance and gallery space is covered but opens to the outdoor lot for shows. The individual studios are indoors and each have a glass rollup door that opens to the outside to welcome people in. “We are definitely looking forward to the monthly art walks for starters (first weekends). In addition, we will be hosting guest curators, artists, and performers in our gallery, performance space and lots of special events and pop-up shows,” said McInnis, who is already excited for the post-grand opening celebration happenings. “The future also holds our desire to positively affect our neighborhood here and into further reaches of West Palm Beach and the county itself. Our collective is like minded in that we are givers of time and effort for the greater good and we use our creativity to find solutions and bridge gaps through our programming and art forms.”

The overall sense of collaboration and community, and being a part of the greater good, resonates throughout the entire space, just like the smoke from the barbeque pit. With the combination of local art, live music, special events and everyone’s favorite barbeque, you’re invited to sit down, stay a while, and come back often. There might be an “I” in collective, but The Peach is all about the “we.” 3950 Georgia Ave., West Palm Beach @thepeachwpb

THE BUTCHER & THE BAR

hat’s better than enjoying beers and brats with your friends? Nothing. That’s exactly why The Butcher & The Bar was created. “Our goal is to provide a ‘premium, not pretentious’ experience for our guests. From our food to our bar program, we offer only the finest and freshest ingredients,” said co-owner Eric Anderson. “We emphasize hospitality—much more than just good service. We want our guests to feel like they are hanging out at a friend’s house, relaxing and having a good time. We don’t push to turn tables, like so many other places do. Our goal is to enhance the guest experience without interfering with it.” Without interfering with quality products, to boot, which makes it more than just a butcher shop and more than just a bar. The Butcher & The Bar is a whole animal butcher shop, meaning that they have an amazing and amazingly fresh supply of beef, pork and other products that are cut and prepared
as needed. This keeps their hand-crafted and handcarved items very fresh, with minimal handling and processing. In fact, they work with five local farms in Florida and get their beef and pork delivered personally from the ranchers themselves. So if you want to know where your meat came from, what the animal ate and how old it was - heck, probably even the animal’s favorite napping tree - they can tell you. On top of that, they’re a 100% scratch kitchen. The team dry ages, cures and smokes their meats and make everything in house including their sausages, mayo, ketchup and pickled goods. Even more impressive, they do this on the daily because their menu, which includes Butcher Bites (American-style tapas meant for sharing), craft sandwiches, Butcher’s Cut (weekly steak special served as a composed dish) and sweets, changes daily. Depending on when you go, you could try the Meat Sheet and drool over summer sausage, beef pepper t h e a t l a n t i c c u r r e n t . c o m 41

stick, country terrine, kielbasa, pickles and crostini. Or maybe the pickles and pimento, or the Brussels sprouts (made with bacon, whiskey, maple syrup and sherry vinegar) suit your fancy? Either way, you simply cannot go wrong if you get the Butchers Burger, which is a house-ground beef smash burger with lettuce, tomato, griddled onions, pickles, cheddar cheese and special sauce on a brioche bun that will definitely juice down your face… and your hands… and your arms… (and you won’t even care because it’s that damn good). Even if you can’t stay for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch, you can stop in and go crazy with their butcher case items and have your own sausage party at home. Hungry? Understandable. But let’s not forget about the cocktails. The team not only prides themselves on offering riffs on old school cocktails, but they are also proud to offer high-end bourbon, whiskey and tequila.
Following suit with their food, they put a delicious emphasis on local and regional providers for their wine, spirits and beer, as well as use only premium ingredients and fresh squeezed juices. “Our goal is to ensure our customers get only the finest quality product,” Anderson said. And who better to dish out the finest quality product than local chef and now The Butcher & The Bar executive chef, Jessie Steele, who you might recognize from 32 East and Dada. With just a little more than a year of dishing out meaty chops for your gaping, hungry chops, The Butcher & The Bar team is proving that they are achieving what they set out to do: to treat their patrons like friends and feed them like family. 510 E.
