welcome! I was recently asked what’s behind my passion to champion independent theatre? Put simply I believe in the artists and their visionsthe stories they want to tell and the exciting ways they want to tell them. It is a deep respect really. I respect and value what they do - they are the risk takers, thinkers, innovators and visionaries. It is with pride and pleasure that I introduce you to the artists and projects that Theatre Works will be supporting in 2014. From new musicals to one-on-one intimate performances, camp comedy to powerful & political live art, we are presenting work across many of Melbourne’s most loved festivals. In 2014 we introduce two subscription packages and a discount for locals. You can see all four of our Selected Works productions, or six of our Encounter(s) projects, from $65. The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant by Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Translated by Denis Calandra Presented by Dirty Pretty Theatre and Theatre Works The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant tells the intoxicating story of a damaging and emotionally brutal love affair between a fashion designer and her female muse and model. The renowned German film maker and playwright’s preoccupation with love, mortality, sexuality, power and vanity are all on display in this seminal and frighteningly evocative theatrical work. Startling, brilliant and viciously funny, this encounter with Petra is an encounter with Fassbinder himself.

Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model

Bryony Kimmings

Presented by Theatre Works Mar 25 - Apr 6 $25 - $32 Writer and Director: Bryony Kimmings Music and Co-Director: Tom Parkinson Lighting Designer: Marty Langthorne Set and Costume Designer: David Curtis Ring Cast: Bryony Kimmings and Taylor Houchen

In an audacious and provocative protest against the world’s flagrant attempts to sexualise and commodify childhood, performance artist Kimmings and her 9-year-old niece Taylor decided to take on the global tween machine at its own game. They invented Catherine Bennett, a dinosaur-loving, bike-riding, tuna-pasta-eating pop star, and vowed to make her world famous to prove that an alternative was possible! In typically screwball and humorous fashion, Edinburgh Fringe First winner Bryony Kimmings asks: What does it really take to be a Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model for a child of the 21st century?

One of the funniest, most charming things I’ve seen in an age” Time Out

Jewel in the Fringe’s crown” The Scotsman

Bryony Kimmings

Presented by Theatre Works in association with Soho Theatre As part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Following her first STI test, Bryony discovered she had a common sexual disease. Not one for retrospection, she was faced with the arduous task of retracing her sexual footsteps to see where she’d contracted her problem. Expect a whirlwind of misadventure and self-realisation told through vignettes of performance, dance and song lovingly gaffer taped to some rough chat and acts of slight danger! Nestled somewhere between homemade-pop-song, ornithological-naturetrail and an ode to love lost, this is a funny and unapologetic account of female sexuality in the 21st century; a show for anyone who’s enjoyed a one-night stand, broken hearts in search of love and ultimately realised no (wo)man is an island.

One woman lays bare the gothic, peculiar and slightly neurotic world of remembering ... and forgetting. Part memoir, part poem, part kaddish, Memorandum examines the ways our memories deform and become misshapen over time, how truths and fictions unknowingly intertwine. Using an immersive audio structure in which live and pre-recorded narratives simultaneously intersect, converge and diverge, Memorandum is driven by a compelling soundscape and striking visual design. Resonant, ethereal and darkly comic, Memorandum exposes the weirdness of memory – with all its disturbing underparts.

The Temptation of St. Antony Four Larks

Presented by Theatre Works and Melbourne Festival Oct 17 - 26 $40 - $50

19th century French author Gustave Flaubert spent much of his life working at his own creation of the story of The Temptation of St Antony. He was inspired by Bruegel’s painting which he visited as a young man. Four Larks, applying their adventurous brand of original music and theatrical adaptation, re-maps this famously unstageable work. The all-consuming resolve of St Antony is tested while Flaubert labours over his life-long endeavour. This wild and unwieldy narrative hurls both author and character together through a philosophical maze of time and space as they hunt for the possibility of an absolute truth, a flicker of light in a nihilistic abyss.

Demented, depraved and uproarious... Little Ones Theatre has once again smeared its mark on the Melbourne stage” The Age (on Salome)

by Wendy MacLeod

Presented by Little Ones Theatre in association with Theatre Works By special arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia An acidic satire about class, incest and mental illness in the vein of Douglas Sirk’s 1950’s melodramas, The House of Yes is a disturbingly camp theatrical experience centered around a deranged family of JFK enthusiasts. Tackled by Little Ones Theatre, the team that brought Psycho Beach Party to Theatre Works in 2013, this production is sure to be a visual and comedic treat.
