SEASON 2017
theatre works. AN ALTERNATIVE VOICE IN AUSTRALIAN THEATRArtE.
THEATRE WORKS has always been an alternative voice in Australian theatre. In the 1980’s, an ensemble of highly driven artists from the Victorian College of the Arts – including Susie Fraser, Caz Howard, Hannie Rayson and Peter Sommerfeld – came together to present new Australian work with a strong focus on community. After six years of presenting location theatre on trams, boats, community halls and traditional theatres, the ensemble found a home in St Kilda’s heritage listed Parish Hall. Over the years, under multiple cycles, Theatre Works consistently renewed itself, responding to the times with gritty courage. In 2017, as part of Theatre Works’ continual evolution, we make the shift towards a co-producing house model. Six Artists In Residence will be offered extended creative development, production support and a new level of mentoring from industry professionals. The works they create will be supported for presentation beyond their premiere season. Emerging artists will be engaged as Associates, working alongside our resident artists. Our venue will transform into a true hub for performing arts that will feed the entire industry. Theatre Works’ 2017 Season brings together a group of game changers who share our view – that theatre is essential within a society that is more disparate and diverse than ever. The wordsmith. The provocateur. The visionary. The fearless. The experience. The ensemble. Artists in search of a contemporary theatre language that push the boundaries of formal theatre making – from new Australian writing, visual theatre, live art and digital expression. The season demonstrates Theatre Works quest - to actively encourage artists to be creative with no bounds. In 2017 we reframe our relationship with audiences. We give you access to these incredible minds. We take you beyond the conventional theatre experience through the Conversation Series, Directors Circle and Masterclasses, that foster connection and collaboration. Together, we question – what is theatre now, and revision it for the future. On behalf of the Theatre Works team and our Resident Artists, we invite you to be a part of this new stage and to immerse yourself in Theatre Works’ 2017 Season.

Charles is a Millennial who wants to have kids, live in Spring Street speculation ‘The Dream’, and for his lover Dan to hold his hand in public. Jodie is Charles’ assistant. She’s new in town. She can’t control her own human instincts but wants to take her industrial design to the next level. A rock and roll comedy featuring property development, new love, sex tapes, divorce and a ’67 Mustang, LIFETIME GUARANTEE is a brutal anthem exploring inexplicable love in a punishing world. The production sees acclaimed Australian playwright Ross Mueller continue his search for truth and humour in places others might not look. His 2009 play CONCUSSION won the New York New Dramatists Playwright exchange and ran a season to critical acclaim at Sydney Theatre Company. In LIFETIME GUARANTEE, he teams up with multi-award winning Theatre Works Creative Director John Sheedy for a biting comedy fuelled by urgency, honesty, anger, sex and alienation. In a market of hot speculation, the council still hasn’t approved. ‘Mueller is surely one of the most intelligent, formally adventurous and emotionally brave playwrights now writing in this country’ – Allison Croggon ‘The triumph of John Sheedy’s adaptation of THE RABBITS into an opera is that it retains both the simplicity of Marsden’s story and the character of Tan’s “parallel” world. Joan is a teenage girl. A virgin soldier who will convince an army of men that she hears the voice of the divine. Her body will become the site of a nation’s anxieties and hopes. She will burn. Realised in black and white, JOAN pays homage to the art of live oration and silent film. Following the immersive portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray in ROOM OF REGRET (2013), Theatre Works is delighted to premiere THE RABBLE’s poetic exploration of France’s medieval heroine, Joan of Arc. The children wait in the desert. Their God performs spectacles of power. He hides His face. He unveils His Face. At last, He reveals the Law. Inspired by the biblical myth, BOOK OF EXODUS is the final installment in Fraught Outfit’s Innocence Trilogy, including the radical, acclaimed production ON THE BODILY EDUCATION OF YOUNG GIRLS (Neon Festival 2013) and the unnerving, surreal teen drama THE BACCHAE (MIAF 2015, Dark Mofo 2016). Over the years extended development time has been afforded to a number of companies - Daniel Schlusser Ensemble, Stuck Pigs Squealing, Adena Jacobs of Fraught Outfit and most recently ARTHUR Productions and OpticNerve Performance Group. THEATRE WORKS history A BRIEF RETROSPECTIVE ‘WE ARE ARTISTS WHO BELIEVE IN THEATRE AS A POSITIVE FORCE IN OUR SOCIETY.’ - From Theatre Works statement 1981 Theatre Works has a rich and innovative history spanning three decades.
multiculturalism, abortion and youth.
THEATRE WORKS
In the 1990’s Theatre Works explored different aesthetics and languages in a quest to present theatre as storytelling, transitioning from a cooperative to a fullyfledged theatre company. During the years under the artistic leadership of Robert Draffin, the company produced and presented adaptations and re-interpretations of classics such as Dostoevsky’s The Idiot and Shakespeare’s Pericles and Titus Andronicus.
Theatre Works is one of the last remaining alternative theatre companies described as part of the Australia’s Next Wave movement. Like some of its contemporaries, Theatre Works was formed in 1980 by a group of students (including Susie Fraser, Carolyn Howard, Hannie Rayson and Peter Sommerfeld) graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts’ Drama School and operated as an ensemble of actors, writers and directors concerned with producing work that both ‘celebrated and disturbed’ suburban audiences. The idea was to take live performance out of dedicated theatre buildings and produce it closer to the places where people lived and worked.
Changes in funding models from federal to state level in the mid ‘90s affected the arts sector as a whole but increased cuts to the performing arts changed the landscape of the theatre industry across the country. Many small to medium theatre companies faced financial hardship and were forced to close.
The company went on producing shows in smaller venues in the Eastern suburbs and became famous for its location theatre, especially for the tram series that started with Storming Mont Albert By Tram in 1982. In 1985 Theatre Works found a home in the heritage-listed Parish Hall, part of the historic Church Square complex in St Kilda, and it marked the beginning of its deep relationship with the bayside community. In its first decade, Theatre Works produced more than 30 original plays – all of which promoted community theatre while developing new Australian drama. The first years were marked by works devised for and with various communities, and included discussions on gender equality, unemployment,
Theatre Works decided to foster and present innovative new works across a range of art forms and genres, and to accomplish this vision, it opened its Parish Theatre as a venue for independent artists and the local community, going on to support artists in residence including Born In A Taxi and critically acclaimed Rawcus, an integrated ensemble of artists of all abilities, and providing a platform where creative partnerships were forged. In the 2000’s, considering the lack of resources available for the independent sector, Theatre Works intensified its presence as a centre for the production and presentation of works by emerging

and established independent artists and small companies. Following the direction of the Board’s Artistic Subcommittee, the company established its Selected Works program. Strengthened by General Manager Angela Pamic, the program presented new works by both emerging and established theatre-makers. During this decade Theatre Works fostered the development of artists working across different sections of the performing arts. Artists including The Hayloft Project, Gravity and Other Myths and Adena Jacobs of Fraught Outfit, continue to have increasingly strong reputations nationally and overseas. From 2012-2015, under the direction of Creative Producer Daniel Clarke, Theatre Works continued to present and produce new works, foster artist development, as well as present international artists including Nilaja Sun (US) and Bryony Kimmings (UK) and professional development initiatives including the Directors Lab: Melbourne. In 2015 Daniel received the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award Facilitator Prize for his contribution to independent theatre. In March 2016, award-winning director John Sheedy joined Theatre Works as Creative Director. Former Artistic Director of Perth’s Barking Gecko Theatre Company, John has worked with Australia’s leading companies including Opera Australia and Sydney Theatre Company. John’s appointment marks the beginning of a new stage in Theatre Works’ evolution. In 2017 the company shifts towards a co-producing model with a strong focus on new Australian work and creating pathways to ensure the longevity of artists’ careers. Theatre Works has gone through many changes but remained in the vanguard of contemporary, quality Australian theatre – always true to its core belief in the power of theatre to affect social change. ~ 39 ~
