THEATRE WORKS FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART 2016 PROGRAM

THEATRE WORKS FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART 2016 PROGRAM

Park your expectations, turn up to Theatre Works and wear comfortable shoes. The Festival of Live Art has been such a great collaboration for Theatre Works, FCAC and Arts House; three very distinct organisations working across the city to curate a program of adventurous, genre-busting, experimental contemporary performances. I urge audiences to jump into the unknown and experience work by some of the most interesting artists from across Australia and the world as they take you on a journey of works that explore everything from the ethics of story-telling, child labour, migration, identity, consumerism and communication. There are parties, auctions, car-washes, workshops, talks, puppetry, dance, experimental sound explorations and more. The Festival of Live Art is on until March the 13th – get amongst it – you never know what you might discover.

PORTRAITS IN MOTION By Volker Gerling Remember the flip books we had as kids? Remember our joy as we flipped the pages and the moving images came to life? Volker Gerling, an intrepid traveller and photographer has walked over 3,500km across native Germany, capturing portraits and turning these into miniature flip books. In this “uniquely heart-warming” show, he projects the moving images onto a screen, sharing a “fascinating glimpse into the human soul” - BROADWAY BABY. ‘These miniature stories rinse your eyes like spring water’ THE SUNDAY TIMES

★★★★★ ‘Duda Paiva captures the audience... with bated breath the audience follows the gestures of this genius puppeteer... he lets his foam puppets dance, sing and let them fight to the death... the magic reigns’ - L’ARDENNAIS

8 – 19 March

BLIND By Black Hole Theatre and DudaPaiva Company ‘I found pain in the light and solace in the dark.’ This solo work from internationally renowned dancer/puppeteer Duda Paiva draws on his childhood experiences in Brazil. Suffering an undiagnosed debilitating illness that rendered him temporarily blind, his search for healing led to surprising discoveries. BLIND transforms his experience into a metaphor about disability, rejection, and ultimately, resolution. This rich theatrical tapestry of dance, puppetry, audience interaction, sound and light, is funny, moving and powerful.

BLIND premiered at Festival Mondial des Theatres de Marionnettes (France) in 2015, to critical and popular acclaim before touring extensively throughout Europe. Concept/Script: Nancy Black, Duda Paiva Director: Nancy Black Lighting Design: Mark Verhoef Sound Design & Composer: Wilco Alkema Performer: Duda Paiva (Brasil/ Netherlands/Aus)

MASTERCLASS

THE OBJECT IS THE SCORE With Duda Paiva Explore the link between movement, space, and the object. How impulses can move from the body through the object, into space and back again. How to modulate and characterise that journey through rhythm, shape, and texture. Discover how to maintain separate identities while playing, and how to use your musculature efficiently. A wonderful opportunity for dancers, physical performers, puppeteers and circus artists - both emerging and experienced.

INTERNAL TERRAINS By Natasha Davis United Kingdom ON E S H OW ON L Y

Created, written and performed by: Natasha Davis Developed in collaboration with: Bob Karper (sound), Branislava Kuburovic (written documentation), Elisa Gallo Rosso (objects), Lucy Cash (movement) and Marty Langthorne (lighting) Venue: Theatre Works, 14 Acland St, St Kilda Date: Sun 13 Mar 2016 Time: 3:00pm Tickets: $35 Full / $26 Conc, Under 30, Groups 8+ [plus $2.50 booking fee per ticket] Bookings: www.theatreworks.org.au or www.fola.com.au

What cracks appear in the density of everyday pressures and ageing? Why is the body sometimes sensitive to every sound?

Internal Terrains explores life as a choreography of decades, in search of what’s at stake as we move from one decade to another. A hanging cage projects shapes onto skin as Natasha’s body is captured in movement. A stuffed crow drives a car. Intermittent sounds are juxtaposed with powerful silences, creating dreamlike moments for both artist and audience to encounter. Poetic and sensual, the performance translates personal stories into visual metaphors around body, memory and migratory identity, playing chords with films and installations, metronomes, masks and electric shocks.

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March

GENIUS By Amelia Ducker and St Martins Australia

ST KILDA TOWN HALL

A live art event led by neurodiverse young people. GENIUS invites you into a series of immersive encounters with eight unique thinkers, where each genius will present their perspective on the topic of their expertise. Did you know that Prince Bernard gave Ian Fleming ideas for the creation of James Bond? That Gough Whitlam was the Prime Minister for a mere 1701 days? Or that an American, Robert Porter “Bob” McKimson, gave the Tasmanian Devil world wide fame, through bringing his illustration, Taz, into Looney Tunes? With subjects ranging from Royal Families of the World, Australian Animals, Linguistics, 21st Century Fashion and Gough Whitlam, this event is a unique opportunity to see life through an alternative lens - a surprising, eclectic walk through the inner workings of a group of exceptional minds.

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March

PLAYING SHOP By Nicola Gunn and Nat Cursio Australia

BRIGHTSPACE

A work in development

Playing Shop is a performance, an exhibition and a shop for children aged 6-10 and people who identify as adults.

Venue: Brightspace Gallery, 8 Martin Street St Kilda Date: Sat 12 Mar 2016 – Sun 13 Mar 2016 Time: 11am, 1.30pm, 4pm Tickets: Free Bookings: Only at www.fola.com.au

Responding to children’s natural inclination towards art-making and playing shop, the project considers the notion of transaction and the fixation on the marketplace as it sits within a contemporary art context: the commodification of art and in turn, the critique of art as consumption. We give them something to do; they give us art. An adventurous work that mischievously looks at consumerism and child labour, anarchy and aesthetic value, Playing Shop provocatively questions whether the value of the experience outweighs the waste produced in its creation. It will get messy. ‘Nicola Gunn’s theatre is tantalising, entertaining, ridiculous and often bewildering in the best possible way. This marvellously eccentric, charming and mischievous performer has created yet another stylish, inventive and startling work... mesmerising and unforgettable’ - Kate Herbert, Herald Sun on Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster
