ALMA I. MORROW STUDENT RESIDENCE HALL WAS THE LOCATION OF AN ALLEGED FALSE IMPRISONMENT LAST FRIDAY, AUG. 27, THE SUSPECT WAS ARRESTED BY UNIVERSITY POLICE AND WAS LATER RELEASED FROM THE GUILFORD COUNTY JAIL.

Morrow Hall residents feel safe despite recent arrest JASMINE JOHNSON Editor in Chief

The University Police Department is patrolling Morrow Hall around the clock after an incident, involving a former student, occurred in the residence hall Friday, Aug. 27 around 9:15 p.m. UPD was called after receiving several phone calls from residents of Morrow Hall saying they heard screaming and there was an unknown man inside the hall. Morrow Hall is a female residence hall. Michael Nwainokpor, 22, a former student at A&T, first approached two female students at the Memorial Student Union. While inside the union, he asked the students had they seen his wife, among other questions. “He asked where the bathroom is, then the security guard told him there was no bathroom in the Sit-In,” said Tiesha Washington, a senior political science major from Washington,

D.C. “He was quiet; he was just standing behind me not saying anything. My friend was putting money on her card, then I turned around and he was literally right behind me.” Washington and her friend proceeded to leave the union, when Nwainokpor followed them outside the side ramp of the union. He then yelled to them, after they caught up with other A&T students. “When we saw our friends, he ran the opposite direction towards the cafe (Williams Dining Hall),” continued Washington. Nwainokpor made his way to the opposite side of campus by Alma I. Morrow Hall. There he followed two other female students outside of Morrow Hall. He started a conversation with the students. When they felt threatened, they proceeding into their residence hall, when Nwainokpor followed them inside, catching the door. The initial students he followed were able to get inside

their room safely. It was when other residents heard a commotion from inside the hall, that they began opening doors to see what was going on. After seeing a door opened, Nwainokpor forced his way into the room, which contained three residents. He locked the door and refused to let them leave. One of the residents was able to escape from inside the room and then UPD was called. UPD apprehended the suspect, after some struggle. Nwainokpor was taken downtown to the county jail, where he was processed. “He didn’t allow them to leave the room,” said University Police Department Chief Glenn Newell. “Kidnapping is preventing someone from having their freedom.” Nwainokpor was charged with false imprisonment according an official at the Guilford County jail. He is also charged with assault and breaking and entering.

Although some students on campus have heard of a rape or sexual assault on campus, Newell assured that those are just rumors. “There was no threat; he was apprehended immediately,” commented Newell. After the suspect was escorted away by police, students began calling their parents and informing them of the incident. Counseling Services was also called in order to provide consultation to all students. “Anytime there is an incident on campus we provide consultation, first in person immediately and then continue with follow ups,” said Dr. Vivian Barnette, director of Counseling Services. “We provide literature on trauma, whether it is physical symptoms or emotional, and provide group/individual counseling if warranted.” Until further notice, Morrow Hall has been under 24-hour coverage since the incident. Although a press release

was sent out to all the current students of A&T, through University Relations, there was no Aggie Alert text or email sent at the time of the incident. “It was not necessary,” said Newell. “The minute we got the phone call, less than a minute later, he was in custody. If there is an imminent threat to the university or an individual, Aggie Alert is sent out.” During the incident, there was a Resident Assistant (RA) on duty on the second floor of Morrow Hall. There was not an assigned Resident Hall Officer (RHO), as their duty begins at 10 p.m. There was no RA on duty on the first floor where the incident took place. Janice Ray serves as the Resident Hall Director of both Morrow and Morrison residence halls. Plans to extend the hours of RHOs were discussed during the 2009-10 academic year, but the implementation was not to begin until September.

Since the incident, Housing and Residence Life administration has begun a series of open meetings with the residents of Morrow Hall and will eventually meet with every other hall. “The best way to work through these issues is with communication,” said Leonard Jones, the executive director of Housing and Residence Life. “We are reaching out to other halls, increasing staff visibility, physically walking around reminding residents of safety tips.” The meeting for Morrow hall residents, which took place, Monday, in Harrison Auditorium, gave residents an opportunity to speak up about their feelings. During the meeting, students were also given an opportunity to voice their opinions on how residence halls could be safer. Some requested that locks be added to bathrooms. he is already working with his staff to make the amenities. “I did not see the man until they were taking him out,” said Carlotta Anderson, a freshman nursing major from Jacksonville, N.C., also a resident of Morrow Hall. “I feel safer since the meeting we had last night.” Also in attendance was the Student Government Association executive board - the Kimball/ “Sanfoka” Administration. “The ladies who were involved had no problems speaking up and out about what happened,” said Wayne Kimball Jr., a senior civil engineering major from Roanoke Rapids, N.C. “We (the Sankofa administration) meet weekly with UPD and have recently started campus safety walks.” The purpose of a campus safety walk, as it concerns safety, is to walk the campus during late hours to see where more lights could be installed and to check the emergency posts that are located around campus. “The last walk was done by the (SGA) executive board. Once an attorney general is elected we will being setting dates for future walks.” According to Kimball, he sent a proposal to the Housing and Residence life administration on behalf of the SGA, which listed chances that could possibly be made to residence life. One of those changes included was to revamp the job description of RAs. According to officials at the Greensboro County jail, Nwainokpor was released Monday, Aug. 30 pending trial. His bail was set at $1,000. He does not have any priors that he was arrested for in Guilford County. It is unclear if he has any priors in another county or state. It is also unknown if Nwainokpor is married.

Category 4 Hurricane Earl heads toward East Coast MIKE BAKER

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Federal officials urged U.S. residents to prepare for possible evacuations and islanders in the Turks and Caicos hunkered down in their homes Tuesday as powerful Hurricane Earl howled over open seas toward the East Coast of the U.S. The Category 4 hurricane, with winds of 135 mph (215 kilometers), was expected to remain over the open ocean before turning north and running parallel to the U.S. coast, potentially reaching the North Carolina coastal region by late Thursday or early Friday. It was projected then to curve back out to sea, perhaps swiping New England or fareastern Canada. “We can’t totally rule out a very close approach to either of the Cape Hatteras areas or Cape Cod and southern New England as the storm progresses further,” said Bill Read, director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Earl delivered a glancing blow to several small Caribbean islands Monday, tearing roofs off of homes and cutting electricity to people in Anguilla, Antigua, and St. Maarten. Cruise ships were diverted and flights canceled across the region. But there were no reports of death or injury. Gusty winds from Earl’s outer fringes were whipping palm fronds and whistling through doors as Turks and Caicos Islands residents hunkered down in their homes and tieddown boats seesawed on whitecrested surf. A small crowd of islanders gathered early Tuesday afternoon to watch big waves pound a Grand Turk shore, as the wind sent sand and salt spray flying. “We can hear the waves crashing against the reef really seriously. Anybody who hasn’t secured their boats by now is going to regret it,” Kirk Graff, owner of the Captain Kirks Flamingo Cove Marina, said by phone as he watched the darkening skies.

In Providenciales, Benson Capron was among several fishermen tying their boats to trees lining the beach. “I hear it is going to pass, but I will not take any chances,” Capron said. “Today I will not go out to fish.” Forecasters said it was too early to say what effect Earl would have in the U.S., but warned it could at least kick up dangerous rip currents. A surfer died in Florida and a Maryland swimmer had been missing since Saturday in waves spawned by former Hurricane Danielle, which weakened to a tropical storm Monday far out in the north Atlantic. Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said evacuations may be necessary along the eastern seaboard later this week if the storm does not veer away from the coast as expected. “Today is the day to make sure you have your plan completed and your supplies in place,” Fugate said. The storm’s center passed

just north of the British Virgin Islands on Monday afternoon. Despite a few lost fishing boats and several uprooted trees in Tortola and Anegada, there were no reports of major damage or injuries, said Sharleen DaBreo, disaster management agency director. By midday Tuesday, Earl’s center was about 170 miles (275 kilometers) east of Grand Turk island as it headed westnorthwest at 14 mph (22 kph), according to the hurricane center. Tropical storm conditions were expected to spread into the Turks and Caicos by Tuesday afternoon. Close on Earl’s heels, Tropical Storm Fiona formed Monday afternoon in the open Atlantic. The storm, with maximum winds of 40 mph (65 kph), was projected to pass just north of the Leeward Islands by Wednesday and stay farther out in the Atlantic than Earl’s northward path. Fiona was not expected to reach hurricane strength over

the next several days. Residents were cleaning up debris and assessing damage Tuesday on islands across the northeastern Caribbean. In Puerto Rico, nearly 187,000 people were without power and another 60,000 without water, Gov. Luis Fortuno said. More than a dozen roads along the north coast remained closed as crews removed trees and downed power lines. In St. Maarten, sand and debris littered the streets, and winds knocked down trees and electricity poles and damaged roofs. But police spokesman Ricardo Henson said there was no extensive damage to property. In Antigua, at least one home was destroyed but there were no reports of serious injuries. Governor General Dame Louise Agnetha Lake-Tack declared Monday a public holiday to keep islanders off the road and give them a chance to clean up.

The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences offers you the opportunity to enhance your chances of employment after graduation through their Multicultural Scholars Program. A&T’s MSP program is open to students pursuing a major in agribusiness, agricultural economics or agriscience education. Dr. Paula E. Faulkner, assistant professor in the department of Agricultural Business, Applied Economics and Agriculture Science, is the project director for the program. The program offers extracurricular activities, including social functions, concerts, and dinners, to help students develop social skills. D’vontae Teasley, a freshman agricultural educa-

tion major and a MSP scholar, attended the social orientation at the Multicultural Center’s open house on Wednesday, Aug. 25. “Everyone was welcoming, friendly, made me feel comfortable, and more confident,” said Teasley. The purpose of this program is to increase the multicultural diversity of the food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce, and advance the educational achievement of all Americans by providing competitive grants to colleges and universities.mThese awards range from $20,000 to $480,000. Faulkner states that the departments’ goal is “to increase the underrepresented or minorities in food and agriculture”. MSP scholarships are intended to increase the number of

new and outstanding students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the food and agricultural sciences, and who pursue and complete their degrees with scientific and professional competence. The program at A&T provides scholarship support of up to $7,500 for tuition, fees, room, meal plans, books and supplies, and travel expenses to conferences. Teasley said that to him the program “gives a broader look on what I can do in agriculture. It is an opportunity to study different cultures and the way that they look at agriculture. I hope to gain a decision into what I would like to study in, meet new people and better myself professionally.” Edwin Catalan, a freshmen agribusiness major, said that the program for him is a way to attend the university. It is a full

ride, so that is a good thing. It will teach me to act in a scholarly manner, teach me etiquette and better my chances of getting a job afterwards.” The MSP funding program opportunity provides training programs that will prepare graduates to meet the demand for highly qualified personnel entering the workforce in the food and agricultural sciences and move more undergraduates into graduate education. This will increase the representation of diverse cultural groups in that field. It will also address the gap between the races that are entering graduate schools to enable the U.S. higher education system to remain competitive internationally. While promoting students success in food and agricultural science disciplines at the undergraduate level, the program will also focus on student learning and outcomes, and professional mentoring to ensure a steady matriculation and entry into graduate school or the workforce. wAlong with funding support by the USDA and NIFA, additional funding is provided through the Special Experiential Learning opportunities. These

opportunities further the development of student scientific and professional competencies, which afford MSP scholars the chance to solve complex real world situation problems. It’s funding will support eligible MSP scholars for one or two year experiential learning activities that are not normally available to other students at the institution. The department received a four-year grant and Faulkner selected five students to receive the award. The students are required to complete the global studies certificate, travel abroad, maintain satisfactory academic progress, service projects, attend class, present presentations and join clubs. Faulkner stated, “The reward offers students the opportunity to pursue graduate studies or go to agricultural related employment such as the USDA or other governmental agencies to increase diversity.” When asked what the most memorable experience so far has been, Catalan smiled and said, “Being accepted to A&T and the scholar program are the most exciting part. They also give you a chance to study abroad.”

Obama announces end of US combat in Iraq BEN FELLER

AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) -Fiercely opposed to the war from the start, President Barack Obama formally ended the U.S. combat role in Iraq after seven long years of bloodshed, declaring firmly Tuesday night: “It is time to turn the page.” Claiming no victory, he said the nation’s most urgent priority now must be fixing its own sickly economy. From the Oval Office, where George W. Bush first announced the invasion that would come to define his presidency, Obama addressed millions who were di-

vided over the war in his country and around the world. He said the United States “has paid a huge price” to give Iraqis the chance to shape their future - a price that now includes more than 4,400 dead, tens of thousands of troops wounded and hundreds of billions of dollars spent since March 2003. In a telling sign of the domestic troubles weighing on the United States and his own presidency, Obama turned much of the emphasis in a major war address to the dire state of U.S. joblessness. In his remarks of slightly less than 20 minutes, only his second address from the Oval Office, Obama looked directly into the TV camera, hands clasped in

front of him on his desk, family photos and the U.S. and presidential flags behind him. Even as he turns control of the war over to the Iraqis - and trying to cap one of the most divisive chapters in recent American history - Obama is escalating the conflict in Afghanistan. He pledged anew that the United States would keep up the fight in that war, the longest since Vietnam. And in Iraq, for all the finality of Obama’s remarks, the war is not over. More Americans are likely to die. The country is plagued by violence and political instability, and Iraqis struggle with constant shortages of electricity and water.

Obama is keeping up to 50,000 troops in Iraq for support and counterterrorism training, and the last forces are not due to leave until the end of 2011 at the latest. As the commander in chief over a war he opposed, Obama took pains to thank troops for their sacrifice but made clear he saw the day as more the marking of a mistake ended than a mission accomplished. He spoke of strained relations with allies, anger at home and the heaviest of wartime tolls. “We have met our responsibility,” Obama said. “Now it is time to turn the page.” To underscore his point, Obama said he had telephoned called Bush, whom he had taunted so

often in the 2008 campaign, and he prominently praised the former Republican president in the heart of his speech. “It’s well known that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset,” Obama said. “Yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops, or his love of country and commitment to our security.” In a post-Sept. 11, 2001, world, the Iraq war began with bipartisan congressional backing based on what turned out to be flawed intelligence - over what Bush called a “grave danger” to the world posed by Saddam Hussein. Now, Iraq is in political turmoil, its leaders unable to form a new government long after

March elections that left no clear winner. The uncertainty has left an opening for insurgents to pound Iraqi security forces, hardly the conditions the U.S. envisioned for this transition deadline, which Obama announced 18 months ago. Obama pressed Iraq’s leaders anew, saying it was time to show urgency and be accountable. Obama sought both to assure his own nation that the war was finally winding down and yet also promise Iraq and those watching across the Middle East that the U.S. was not simply walking away. “Our combat mission is ending,” he said, “but our commitment to Iraq’s future is not.”

NY Islamic center imam speaks Few answers given for 72 BORZOU DARAHI MCT Campus

BEIRUT - The leader of the proposed Manhattan Islamic cultural center near the site of the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attacks told a Persian Gulf newspaper that there was no conflict between Islam and America and dismissed the opponents of the Park51 project as being led by “very small, vociferous voices.” Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s interview with the Abu Dhabibased daily newspaper the National, which was published Monday, provided the first extensive comments he’d made about the controversy over the community center, which will include a prayer room, in the weeks since a New York City planning board gave it final approval.

He’s currently in the Middle East on a U.S. State Department-sponsored tour of Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where he is speaking to groups of Muslims in an attempt to boost relations between America and Islam. Last week, several hundred activists protested the placement of the proposed center so close to ground zero as insensitive to the victims. Cable-news channels have been giving the issue extensive coverage, with some guests accusing Abdul Rauf of harboring sympathies for radical Islam. Some worry the heated rhetoric is harming America’s reputation in the Muslim world. But Abdul Rauf said the clash over the proposed center, formerly called the Cordoba House, is not “between Muslims and non-Muslims, but between moderates of all the

faith traditions and the radicals of all the faith traditions.” The scholar attributed part of the opposition to election-year grandstanding over a local issue. “The fact of the matter is the local community board recognizes and understands the vision, the politicians in New York understand the vision, and there is broad-based support for these objectives,” he said. He said he planned to speak out more about the controversy when he’s back home. “As it is, my trust and conviction in the wisdom of the American people and political leadership and the American people at large is that they will act in accordance with the highest principles of our Constitution and the fundamental American belief in justice and protection of everybody’s rights.”

migrant killings in Mexico BORZOU DARAHI MCT Campus

MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Friday accused the gunmen who killed 72 illegal migrants in northern Mexico this week of “incalculable savagery” as his government attempted to depict the major drug gang implicated in the slaughter as weakened and desperate. The discovery of the grisly massacre Tuesday night at a ranch near San Fernando, about 45 miles southwest of Brownsville, Texas, put the spotlight on Los Zetas, a crime syndicate based along Mexico’s Gulf Coast that has international tentacles. The massacre and its murky motives continued to shake Mexico on Friday. A small car bomb blew up near the local offices of Mexican network Televisa farther south in Tamaulipas state, in Ciudad Victoria, causing damage but no injuries. Calderon himself also confirmed that two state criminal investigators who’d been assigned to probe the slayings had vanished. In an interview on W Radio, Calderon searched for words

to describe the contempt he felt for the gunmen who lined up the migrants mostly from Central America but also from Ecuador and Brazil and sprayed them with bullets. “They are simply beasts,” Calderon said. The sole apparent survivor, an Ecuadorean, feigned death and escaped the San Fernando ranch, stumbling with a bullet wound in his neck to alert Mexican marines who were stationed nearby. A top aide to Calderon blamed Los Zetas and said military pressure on the group had left it weakened and in need of reinforcements. Alejandro Poire of Mexico’s National Security Council said the gunmen had captured the migrants and given them a choice: Work for Los Zetas as gunslingers and peons, or face death. When the 58 male and 14 female migrants resisted, they were killed. “Rather than a kidnapping with an apparent financial aim, it was done fundamentally with the goal of detaining these people and forcing them to join the structures of organized crime,” Poire said, according to a transcript of his remarks, made in another radio interview, that

Calderon’s office issued Friday. Human and civil rights groups voiced outrage that the Calderon government used the massacre to defend its military campaign against drug cartels, even as the human toll grows. Poire “tries to diminish the magnitude of the massacre, affirming that it is a sign that organized crime has been hit by the government,” 39 groups from around Latin America said in a statement. However, an Austin, Texasbased strategic intelligence research group, Stratfor, said in a report Friday that Los Zetas, sometimes called simply the “Z’s,” indeed are hurting. Los Zetas, which arose more than a decade ago as a paramilitary shock force for the Gulf cartel, broke away from the struggling Gulf drug lords in February and have been locked in a bloody war with other trafficking groups since then. The group has branched into other areas of criminal activity, including piracy of consumer goods, extortion and taking control of human smuggling routes from traffickers known as coyotes, reaping from $2,000 to $10,000 per migrant. Needing more gunmen against its rivals, Los Zetas called up Central American gang members with whom they’re allied, the Stratfor report said. “This latest incident shows a continued desperation for manpower and ability to put boots on the ground to defend Los Zetas’ home territory,” it said. Another analyst of Mexico’s security situation, Edgardo Buscaglia, cast doubt on official accounts of the massacre and criticized Calderon’s handling of it. “First, we have to find out whether they really were Zetas,” Buscaglia said, or whether they might have been crime gangs further down the chain. Buscaglia said Calderon had glossed over evidence that all of Mexico’s major crime groups had grown stronger during his term, and that he has used military force against the cartels without taking other steps to deal with pervasive government corruption, which allowed the cartels to strengthen. “The president, unfortunately, looks at all of this as a media war,” Buscaglia said. The portrayal of Los Zetas as weakened “is a marketing story” to deal with the international black eye Mexico has suffered with the massacre, he said. “Every serious expert in the world agrees that Mexican organized crime groups are more powerful than ever before,” Buscaglia said. Los Zetas have moved into parts of Central America. In March, police in Guatemala said the group had threatened to kill President Alvaro Colom, and a month later El Salvador’s president warned of Los Zetas’ presence in his country. Police in Bolivia and Colombia also have reported ties between local drug clans and the violent Los Zetas.

Sorry. You’re just not girlfriend material If we have never spoken on the phone, yet we have had sex on numerous occasions, you are not, and probably never will be, my girlfriend. So please stop the sexting if you want to be treated with respect. I understand text messages are easier to send than calling these days, but when did it become okay to allow that to be our only form of communication? There’s a reason why he refuses to answer the phone, yet texts you back immediately after the phone stops ringing. Chances are, he’s probably with his other girl. This article is dedicated to the girls who have settled to be

Why lay on your back for a man that you know would not speak to you if there was no sex involved? Most guys know what type of girl you are long before they approach you. We’ve done our homework. There is typically a perfectly logical reason to why a senior male is showing you so much interest as a freshman. It rarely, if ever, has anything to do with your conversation skills. Trust me, it probably is because of your lack of intelligence.

It does not take long to change from a new student, to a freshman freak on this campus. So watch what you do. TRUMAINE And this MCCASKILL is not just for the freshmen. Many of you already know that there are plenty of sophomore strumpets, junior jump-offs, and senior skanks walking this campus. I believe Dave Chappelle said it best when he said that if the female body were stock, it would be plummeting right now

Natural hair and nappy head As an avid tweeter, throughout last semester and this past summer, I’ve been seeing a lot of tweets from males criticizing how females dress, act, and especially how they wear their hair. Some of the tweets that I read said things like, “Natural hair is sexy”, “I hate weaves”, “If you wear weave, don’t talk to me” and “Natural Hair Rocks!!!” Since first seeing guys’ tweets about natural hair during last semester, I cannot help but notice that an overwhelming number of females have resorted to going natural. Girls are cutting out their perm, wearing short curly but mostly nappy bushes, and starting locs. Many females said that the reason they went natural is because they want to take care of their hair and be healthier. They no longer want to put chemicals in it. Unfortunately, I feel that for most females on this campus, the choice to go natural was not because of this, but because going natural is becoming a trend. While talking to a male friend of mine, I asked him his thoughts on girls going natural. He said that he preferred natural hair and that he hated weaves with a passion. When I asked him if he felt that a female going natural was a personal preference or a trend, he replied, “Females always say they are going natural because they want to be healthier. If girls really were pressed about being healthier, why do you have a gut? Why don’t you work out regularly? Why don’t you eat healthier? Its definitely a trend.”

I think it is safe to say that his point was made. I wholeheartedly believe that the natural hair craze is becoming a trend KAMILAH if it is not one BLACKSTON already. In the same way that many females follow and copy Rihanna’s hairstyles and Nicki Minaj’s pink lips, this is the same path that the natural hair trend is following. Everybody can not wear short hair. Everybody does not look good with bright pink lips. Only a handful of females can pull off a short hair cut, let alone natural hair. Unfortunately, if you are one of those few, there are hardly any hair stylists in Greensboro that actually know what they are doing. A lot of girls stray from who they are by trying to be like other people. If we all did the same thing, nobody would be different and I feel it is safe to say that a lot of girls on this campus are starting to look just alike. Women need to find out what looks good on them and what does not. If your head is bigger than your body, short hair might not be the way to go. If your hair is dry, brittle, and extremely nappy, natural hair is just not for you. A lot of girls need a wakeup call. Some girls might just have to resort to a perm if the texture of their hair is not too pretty. If you know your hair does not grow, you might want to con-

sider getting a sew-in and keeping one. We all try to be queens and some people feel like going natural is getting back in touch with your roots. However, if you are looking more like a slave than a queen, you might want to take a trip to the beauty supply store and get some perm or weave. This natural hair trend is getting out of control. I hate that girls walk around thinking that natural bush is fly when it is not. Ladies, please go do something to that head because that bush is making you look foolish. Regardless of what guys may say about females’ hair, or what looks good on somebody else does not necessarily mean it looks good on you. The sooner women realize what looks good on them and what does not, the better off they will be. Hopefully after reading this some people will take this advice as constructive criticism and get their life together. As for the males who have something to say about every aspect of a female’s appearance, do not think you are so GQ that you can’t use some tips. I can go on scruff, unkempt hairlines, and dusty locs all day. Some of you need to get your life together as well. Natural hair looks good on some people, but everybody cannot pull it off! Individuality is what makes people interesting, but lately the only thing interesting about many girls is that mess on their heads.

We would love to hear from you!

since many females have just flooded the market with it. Stop expecting men to respect and appreciate you if you fail to respect and appreciate yourself. If you are not “wifey” material just yet, then that is fine. But work toward changing that. Being a respectable and responsible woman is more important than rocking a man’s world. Get an education in the classroom and not just the dorm room. Try to learn a skill that does not involve a special trick with your tongue. And for God’s sake, stop trying to convince yourself that your actions are normal when in reality you are

just tricking off. In the words of Ms. Stacie Bailey, “if your heels are higher than your GPA, you need to get your priorities together.” Quit being a statistic and realize that your chances of finding a good man may be slim to none if this applies to you. So please be mindful of what you do and say at all times. Always remember that if your “body count” exceeds the number of followers you have on twitter, or if you are only invited to his room/apartment between the hours of 12 a.m. -5 a.m., then maybe there is a reason why you are a lonely black woman. Our black women have gone

from being too strong to get a man, to now being too weakminded to train one. Stop being a slave to his penis and become the master of your vagina. Stop handing it out as if it were a refund check. Educated black women are supposed to be the “cream of the crop”. Yet it appears that gaining access to your underwear is so easy that a caveman can do it. Get it together! I feel like it has become painfully obvious that spreading your legs is not the key to happiness. So let’s try and have some self-control, if not, you will forever be a boo and never someone’s girlfriend.

‘Love the way you lie’ tells no lies The song opens with the words, “just gonna stand there and watch me burn that’s alright because I like the way it hurts.” Eminem’s music video for his latest single, “Love the Way You Lie”, has been stirring up controversy in the media. The music video, which stars Eminem, Rihanna, and Meghan Fox, shows a couple in a domestic violence situation. When I first watched the video, I did not see anything wrong with it. Then the next day, I saw all these headlines bashing the video and I was very puzzled by what people were saying. Many critics have said if there was a PSA saying that domestic violence is not acceptable then the video would be appropriate, but without one it’s “glamorizing” domestic violence. Randy Susan Meyers from the Huffington Post said “We see one long rationalization about how two people caught up in alcohol and sex flame out a passion-soaked burn. That’s the song you kids will be humming and dancing to while they watch

a glamourdrama of domestic abuse amidst. ” Although there are scenes that show the couple arguSEJAL ing, pushing, and then CHAPPELL passionately kissing each other, I feel like this video would not encourage anyone to want to be in a domestic violence relationship. The topic, which hits home for both Eminem and Rihanna, is very unfortunate, but in reality it happens to a lot of people. I feel like the song will help bring awareness to the issue. Even lines from the song such as, “and the more I love her the more I suffer” and “you’re the same as me when it comes to love you’re just as blinded” attempts to tell listeners that this is not how love should be. For the record, I do not think that domestic violence is right and love should never hurt. But, music is supposed to be an outlet for people to express themselves and for their listeners to

be able to relate to them. Eminem is one of the best rappers of our generation and I applaud him for being so personal in his music. He is known for pushing the boundaries and rapping about subjects that people are too afraid to touch. I think that the public just wanted to place the blame of domestic violence on him instead of going after the abusers in domestic violence situations. People have to be more open to discussing these types of topics. Society cannot sweep this issue under the rug like it does not exist. It seems they just want to bash Eminem for simply speaking the truth. Domestic violence has taken place way before “Love the Way You Lie” was even recorded. I do not feel that Eminem is “glamorizing” domestic violence, but instead trying to get the public to understand it from someone who has experienced it. He is raising awareness not promoting it. The public is unfortunately trying to make someone the face of domestic violence and right now that person is Eminem.

Volleyball team off to 0-3 start Lauren MOrgAN Sports Editor

The North Carolina A&T volleyball team lost three straight games to open 20101011 season. Friday and Saturday the Aggies saw action in the High Point Invitational at the Millis Center. For the nine freshmen on the A&T volleyball team, this was their first experience in a Division I tournament. “This was the first time 9 out of our 11 players ever played in a collegiate level Division I tournament,” said Head Coach Tia Conway. “They started off rocky, the first day was shaky; the second day was a little better.” On Friday afternoon the Lady Aggies faced Appalachian

State, this marked the season opener for both teams. The Appalachian State Mountaineers dominated the Aggies defeating them 3-0 (259, 25-10, 25-13). The Mountaineers gained an impressive 10-2 advantage in the first set and continued to dominate throughout the match. After a commanding two sets for the Mountaineers, two errors allowed the Aggies to tie 8-8 in the third set. That was the closet the Aggies would get to a victory. The Mountaineers went on a 14-1 run to take a 21-9 advantage over the Aggies. A&T would score only four more points before falling short to the Mountaineers. In the loss, freshmen Tatiana Cooper and Jeana Daniels each recorded four kills for the Ag-

gies. Senior Caroline Sedon led the Mountaineers with 10 kills and six block assists. The tournament would not get much better for the Aggies. After a tough loss on Friday, the Lady Aggies faced both High Point and UNC Wilmington Saturday afternoon. In the Aggies first match on Saturday, they fell short once again losing 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-12) to High Point. Cooper continued to play with high energy, recording five kills and eight digs in the Aggies second straight loss of the season. In their third match of the tournament, the Lady Aggies faced UNC Wilmington. Although UNC Wilmington defeated A&T 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16), the Aggies would not go

down without a fight. Daniels recorded her first career double with 11 digs and 11 kills. She also recorded two kills. Coach Conway was pleased with Daniel’s numbers and very enthusiastic about her play for the season. “She was able to get double figures in attacks as well as digging,” said Conway. “That’s a great start to what we are trying to accomplish this year.” The only senior for the Lady Aggies, Amber Inman, added 19 assists and seven digs. After falling to the UNCW Seahawks in the first set, the Lady Aggies sparked a 4-1 run to take a 13-10 advantage. The Seahawks and the Aggies battled for the lead, and with the game tied 21-21 the Seahawks

took the advantage scoring four straight points to win the set. The battle in the second set was the closest A&T would get to defeating the Seahawks. In the third set UNCW took an early 15-5 lead and went on to defeat the Aggies, giving A&T their third straight loss. After going 0-3 in the High Point Invitational, the Aggies are looking to turn their season around and pull out a win this Friday against Savannah at 6 p.m. in Corbett Sports Center. Coach Conway has the faith that her team can do just that. “It’s time to win,” Conway said. “We have a home match and we’re going to bring a win home this Friday.”

Another season of North Carolina A&T football kicks off on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Aggies host the Rams of Winston-Salem State. Last years’ I-40 Classic ended with a 19-10 Aggie win at Bowman Gray Stadium. The Aggies went on to finish the season with just three more wins and a 4-6 record. According to Head Coach Alonzo Lee fans can expect a more physical and aggressive team this year. “You can expect a very aggressive, hard-nose, hard-hitting team, there’s no doubt about it,” said Lee. “We went in to camp saying that we wanted to be physical and it’s no way to be

physical other than practicing physical. We’ve had a physical grueling camp, so I know you can look forward to seeing a very physical, hard-hitting team.” If the Aggies are successful in accomplishing these goals, junior strong safety Justin Ferrell from Danville, VA could be a major reason why. Ferrell recorded six interceptions last season making him the nations ninth best pass defense. He also earned first-team AllMEAC preseason honors along with fellow defensive back junior Quay Long. Ferrell and Long will try and help the Aggies remain one of the nations best pass defenses. “Justin makes us a team that can really get after you blitzwise because he can cover like

a corner,’’ said Lee. “It gives us a chance to play a little more man coverage. His presence really makes us a better defense.” On offense, the Aggies will start sophomore Lewis Kindle at quarterback. He will try to improve the Aggies offense, which has struggled to move the ball consistently over the years. Coach Lee believes the improvement is possible with the help of the crowd. “I enjoy that 12th man. Our fan base is outstanding,” said Lee. “You know when we’re down, you’re pushing us to be up and different things like that and I think if we have it like that, we’re going to be outstanding.”

NEW YORK -- Former New York Giants Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress has come up short in his bid for work release during his two-year prison sentence in a gun case, a denial that could keep him behind bars until at least next spring, prison officials said Tuesday. The state Department of Correctional Services said the nature of his November 2008 crime merited turning down his request for a work furlough, which would have let him spend some portion of his time free and working. Burress can appeal the decision but otherwise can’t reapply for a work furlough until June 6, 2011, the date he comes up for

potential full release if he gets time off for good behavior. “The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community coupled with [the] dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable for work release,” the agency said. For now, the wide receiver remains in protective custody, because of his notoriety, at a prison in the central New York community of Oneida. The work release request was Burress’ second since he started serving his sentence last September. Such requests are rarely successful -- less than 2 percent of the nearly 27,000 applications received last year were granted, New York prison system spokeswoman Linda Foglia said.

Range Charles, an upcoming artist for the StarRoc/RocNation label, has made a big impact in the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer. After writing with Grammy award winning team, Stargate, Range was signed to the label. He has written hit singles, “One More Drink,” by Ludacris, “Cover Girl,” by Jamie Foxx, and “Download,” by T-Pain. Range supposed to have a listening party yesterday in Exhibit Hall but due to unexpected events on the label side, the listening party was cancelled. Range, a Connecticut native has been affiliated with music his entire life. “I’ve been into music since I was a kid,” he stated. At a young age, his mother influenced Range musically. “My mother is schoolteacher, who also was the choir director at our church. My mom played cello and sang, so I guess I got that from her,” he says. With Range getting more into the music industry, he realizes that he is living out his mother’s dream because she loves music and wants to sing. Range is not all about music, before he actually got signed to the StarRoc/RocNation label, he went to Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT where he got a degree in business administration and a bachelors in science. “I wanted to graduate for my parents,” says Range. His mother gave him a musical side while his father taught him the business side with owning a nursing home in Georgia. “I was still doing my music

Fantasia is making a definite comeback with her album ‘Back to Me.’ This album will remind you of her days on the third season of American Idol. The first official single “Bittersweet” is climbing up the Billboard R&B charts, but that is not the only song worth listening to on this album. The album is full of ballads such as “Trust Him” and “Falling in Love”. Remember Fantasia’s performance of “Summertime” from Idol? “Teach Me” is right up there. Fantasia is known for her lyrics relating to issues that young women deal with in their lives. At times, she has been ridiculed for being “ghetto” with songs such as “Baby Mama” from her first album. That song however, became an anthem for young mothers all over the country. Keeping with her southern roots, “Corn Bread Collard Greens” is very catchy and upbeat. It’s one of those songs that will definitely get stuck in your head. “I’m Doin’ Me” and “Move on Me” are definitely uplifting songs that you can listen to when you are going through different situations. The album also features a song Fantasia performed during her run on the musical “The Color Purple,” called “I’m Here”. This song is so powerful that it brought tears to my eyes. The lyrics to this song are very

inspirational and Fantasia’s powerful voice brought the song to life. Regardless of the personal struggles that Fantasia has been going through these past couple of weeks, this album has shown that Fantasia is without a doubt a force in the music industry. The overall album was very good, but there were one or two songs I did not enjoy as much as the others. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys R&B music. Fantasia has gift for music and what she has overcome should inspire women all around the world.

“The Last Exorcism” may have been the worst of the exorcism movies. It develops very slow and leaves you somewhat dumbstruck when it’s over. The movie follows a camera man and audio woman who film a pastor for a documentary their doing on exorcisms. The pastor, Cotton Marcus played Patrick Fabian, performs a fraudulent exorcism on this young girl, Nell played by Ashley Bell, who he believes is really suffering from some type of mental disorder. Once he collects his money for the act, he soon realizes that the girl is actually possessed by a demon. The subplot of this 16-yearold girl being pregnant also adds to the intensity. It is compelling to watch the entire movie because of the first person account which leaves an element of surprise, but then the ending is a let-down. Every time the action seemed to come to a peak, it calmed down. The movie finally reached a climax at the end, but ultimately the main characters never really reach a resolution. The one positive thing about “The Last Exorcism” is that it was unpredictable. It was hard to predict what was going to happen next.

If this movie didn’t leave the viewer with so many questions at the end it could have fared better. So, what happened to the pastor? What happened to the girl? What happened to her father? Don’t be surprised if you hear a boo or two when the movie ends as people are left asking themselves these questions. “The Last Exorcism” gives the viewer that ‘there’s a part two’ feeling, but the only problem with that is this was supposed to be the ‘last’ exorcism. Maybe the title shouldn’t be taken so literally. If you are a fan of actionpacked movies, this isn’t for you because it develops way too slow, but it does have an element of suspense and intrigue for those who like to connect the dots.
