MUCKERS by Caroline Horton
Do you remember when you stopped mucking about? Paloma has always mucked about with Pichón. They run wild. They dress up like tigers, flamenco dancers, queens, kings, rabbits and Lady Gaga. Life is fun and funny and a little bit loopy. Until one day a blinding white light lands on Paloma. Embarrassed and confused, her days of dressing up, running wild, and mucking about with Pichón seem to be over... It’s good to be ambitious, but not too much It’s good to be attractive, but not too much It’s good to be heard, but not too much Slowly Paloma begins to realise all the things she has lost. Created with an international ensemble, Muckers is a quest for self-acceptance, with original songs and quite a lot of Spanish. Side-splitting and poignant in equal measure, it brings us face-to-face with the curious invisible forces which are acting upon us when we don’t even know it. Join Paloma on a magnetic, captivating, and mucky journey.

THE INCUBATOR The Incubator is the egg’s pioneering programme to develop world class art for young audiences. Since it started in 2013, The Incubator has created a total of 26 plays, including this autumn’s Muckers (see page 6). A lot of this Incubated work goes on to tour the UK and beyond. To create these shows, The Incubator has provided theatre artists with actors, directors, mentors, trips to festivals, rehearsal rooms, script readings, space and staff support. Whilst artists are with us they work with our Theatre School, teach on our Bath Theatre Academy course, and try out their material on test audiences. We are very excited by the 2019 cohort of theatre-makers and their original ideas. Jenny Sealey, Artistic Director of Graeae and co-director of the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony, will be exploring (and appearing in) a onewoman adaptation of a very popular children’s book. Performer, producer and founder of ThisEgg Josie Dale Jones will be examining the UK’s relationship with sex education, consent and pleasure in The Family Sex Show. Jenni Jackson is a British/Bolivian actor, theatre-maker, and movement director who will be exploring play, risk and girlhood with a cast of ten 10-year-old girls. The project is called Thank Heaven for Little Girls, and is co-produced with the Lowry’s ‘Developed With’ programme, and supported by The Place. Check out the Artist Development page on our website to find out more. www.theatreroyal.org.uk/take-part/artist-development The Incubator is funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
