A GREAT NIGHT OUT!

Box Office: 01924 211 311 // Visit us online: theatreroyalwakefield.co.uk

Welcome to our Spring season Another highlight is the launch of the national tour of When Harry Met Sally which we are presenting in association with Jamie Wilson Productions. We are always looking for opportunities to develop our profile and this week promises to be something very special. Zoe Tyler will be starring as Eva Casidy in Over the Rainbow, and there are visits from The Hairy Bikers, Les McKeown from the Bay City Rollers, Marty Wilde and a welcome return from David Fawcett and Beyond the Barricades. We are delighted to be opening the Season with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. This group of astonishing musicians first played Theatre Royal Wakefield three years ago and in a few short years have come to public attention in a big way, so much so in fact that they were invited to take part in the 2009 series of BBC Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. We are delighted to welcome them back to Wakefield.

" I love this intimate, colourful and atmospheric theatre, its charm and attractiveness preserved. What a thrill it is to perform on the stage, beneath the bright lights, and look down at the happy faces in the plush seats and hear the laughter, a real gem.” - Gervase Phinn

We are very pleased to be able to include a performance of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in March by English Chamber Opera, a new company that has recently been established to bring performances of the operatic repertoire to theatres across the country. A feature of our programme for 2010 and beyond is an association with Wakefield Film Society. This group has been set up to

offer performances of quality films that are not currently available in Wakefield. From January onwards they will be presenting regular film performances at Theatre Royal Wakefield and we look forward to working with them to develop audiences for a new and exciting strand of work. The spring always reminds me of promise – the green shoots that prophesy rebirth and a new year in the making. I hope that you will find our programme both stimulating and enjoyable. As Gervase Phinn has pointed out we are fortunate in having such a beautiful theatre in which to present our work, and we hope that you will be able to spend time with us this Spring experiencing for yourself the remarkable range of talents on offer. Bring your friends and make an evening of it!

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, seen and heard across the globe, is simultaneously provocative, entertaining and inspiring.

Their shows combine music, humour and intelligence with silliness. Using a menagerie of voices and cheap instruments, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain elicit emotion and thought in unexpected forms and successfully mix highbrow with lowbrow to appeal to an astonishingly broad audience. A collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies. See the universe in the grain of a Ukulele. You may never think about music in the same way once you've been exposed to the Ukes' depraved musicology.

£17 & £16 Book online: theatreroyalwakefield.co.uk Box office: 01924 211 311

The Orchestra use the limitations of the instrument to create a musical freedom with Ukuleles, (little ones, big ones, high ones, low ones) revealing unsuspected insights into popular music. From Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Reading, the Orchestra takes you on a world tour with only hand luggage and gives the listener 'One Plucking Thing After Another'. 'The best musical entertainment in the country.' - The Independent 'They have grown into a muchloved institution.' - The Observer 'The sophisticated sound they make – both percussive and melodic – is at once hilarious and heartfelt.' - The Financial Times

Wakefield Film Society @ Theatre Royal Wakefield Film Season Highlights The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (January 2010) In 1940’s Germany a nine year-old boy and his family re-locate to the countryside when his father, a General, is assigned a new posting. From his new bedroom window he wonders why all the people he can see are wearing striped pyjamas in a nearby farm. His mother believes that they are living next to an internment or labour camp; her husband has sworn under oath never to reveal its real purpose as a killing factory designed to implement the ‘Final Solution’, the systematic eradication of the Jewish people. Welcome to the Sticks (February 2010) This French farce trades on French regional rejudices that may bemuse audiences here, it is very similar to the North / South divide in England and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Gomorrah (March 2010) The film Gomorrah shows the dark side of Naples, portraying a city of rot and executions overseen by the ruthless Camorra crime organisation. Based on an expose by the investigative journalist Roberto Saviano – who is now living under police protection after exposing the powerful Camorra.

Gone is the salubrious family pad, gone are the new clothes and, humiliatingly, gone is Anna’s beloved catechism class. James Dowdeswell A former Jongleurs New Act winner and Phil Kay theatre support act, James has had a great year. As well as bringing us an acclaimed new Edinburgh show, he returned from Australia where his ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’ show was a sell-out hit at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. 'Dowdeswell is a real master of the comedian’s craft. It is a genuine pleasure to be in the company of this master gagsmith for an hour, an experience that few should really pass up.' **** - Chortle

'She succeeds because she is such a skillful raconteur, not only coaxing big laughs but also those moments of poignancy and inspiration to which so many performers don't even get close.' **** - Three Weeks When: Friday 5 February ― 8pm How Much: £8 (£6 concessions) £5 Where: Wakefield Arts Centre 08

Smug Roberts As seen on 'Phoenix Nights', 'That Peter Kay Thing' and the sublime Ken Loach film 'Looking For Eric'. Smug is a Comedy Store and Jongleurs regular with brilliant punchlines and acidic anecdotes from his home life as a cuckolded house husband with two teenage kids on a hormonal rampage. He’s also the only First Friday performer to boast a chart hit with ‘Meat Pie Sausage Roll’ that made it to the heady heights of number 67 on the countdown in June 1998. That is until Morrissey lowers his fee. ’A comedy maestro… the pace, emphasis and rhythm of his delivery is impeccable. A rock- solid act guaranteed to entertain’ - City Life

Danny Pensive Paddington Bear meets the loony at the bus stop in a unique comic creation that manages to be both poignant and laugh-out-loud hilarious. Danny headlined at the Green Belt festival in August and his mirth-fuelled musings, bizarre flights of fancy and deadpan diary readings have established him as an everburgeoning cult figure on the national comedy circuit. ‘He picks up OCD’s the way an aardvark picks up ants. In short he went down a storm.’ – Worksop Guardian When: Friday 12 March ― 8pm How Much: £8 (£6 concessions) Where: Wakefield Arts Centre

Anvil Springstien A Scouser in exile with nearly 25 years in the business, Anvil is a living legend of the comedy circuit, having regularly headlined every major comedy venue from Sheffield to Singapore. As seen on ITV’s ‘House of Fun’ and ‘The Entertainers’, the man with the bizarre pseudonym is a natural born storyteller with wickedly witty and frequently gobsmacking tales of his endeavours. 'The more I see this guy the funnier he gets. He is outstanding at a level only a handful of today’s stand-ups are capable of achieving.’ – Daily Mail

Bethany Black The self-styled Fairy Gothmother, Bethany Black has quickly established herself as an effortlessly engaging act with her razorblade style of risque humour. Her material is as black as her eye shadow and her delivery as deadpan as a Goth at a garden centre, all in a neat PVC package. ‘If having a unique selling point is the secret of success, then Bethany Black should prepare for world domination.’ - Bruce Dessau, British Comedy Awards When: Friday 9 April ― 8pm How Much: £8 (£6 concessions) £5 Where: Wakefield Arts Centre
