"Theatre Royal Wakefield is a jewel in the region's crown. As well as the wide variety of touring shows, the beautiful historic auditorium is the backdrop for its own acclaimed pantomime and musical productions which draw audiences from across Yorkshire. The theatre puts the community at the heart of its work and helps make a reality of the Arts Council's ambition of great art for everyone." - Cluny Macpherson, Regional Director, Arts Council England, Yorkshire
Welcome to our Summer season The cornerstones of the season include the third annual Wakefield Dance Festival – Moves. This year’s festival includes a special performance from the highly acclaimed Phoenix Dance, Ballet Central and new to this year The Demon Barbers! The annual drama festival ‘7 Plays in 7 Days’ celebrates its 10th anniversary year this season. Who would have thought when we started the festival ten years ago that it would become such an important annual event.
Welcome to another summer season with Theatre Royal Wakefield, where we finally get to enjoy the balmy evenings before a trip to the theatre! The summer season has a wonderful mix of shows with the regular summer features you've come to know and love.

We welcome the return of high quality drama and open the season with Cider With Rosie a beautiful new show from Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, as well as launching the national tour of Stepping Out, Me and Me Dad presented by Hull Truck and Jus’ Like That, the Tommy Cooper story which played recently in the West End. We have an amazing variety of music from Gordon Giltrap to Kenny Ball, and from John Walker and The Dakotas to One Night in Vegas. Back by popular demand is The Magic of Motown which took Wakefield by storm last year.
Finally it would be remiss of me not to mention the inclusion of Peppa Pig's Party. The stage version of this wonderful TV show is touring the UK and will be here in Wakefield at the end of June. If you have young children then this is an absolute must. We hope that you will enjoy the programme that we have put together for you and that you will find much of interest. Audiences lie at the heart of what we do and we take a great deal of time and effort to seek out performances of quality that cover a wide range of interests. If you feel you’d like to find out more about what we do then We Love Theatre might be just the thing. Members enjoy ticket discounts and opportunities to learn more about what we do through regular newsletters and opportunities to meet staff and artists.

Cider With Rosie By Laurie Lee In a new adaptation by Daniel O'Brien 'I belonged to a generation which saw, by chance, the end of a thousand years' life.' Rural Gloucestershire, England 1917. Hopkins. Tyrannical teacher Old Crabby. The warring ancient rival Grannies Trill and Wallon. And of course that first, unforgettable, cider-fuelled encounter in the harvest fields. Laurie Lee's story puts on record the England that we have traded for the petrol engine in an evocative prose poem that sparkles, winks and wryly smiles. "He had a nightingale inside him" read his Guardian obituary - it will be heard singing clearly in this charming and lyrical production.

In a dusty church hall, exprofessional dancer Mavis Turner holds her weekly tap class. Every Thursday, in stumbles her well-intentioned but not overly talented troupe – the awkward but hugely enthusiastic Lynne, snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine and the rest of the group – all brought together to dance as if no one is watching, and hopefully no-one ever will!

Each has a story to tell from the past, which reveals family secrets and intrigues that intermingle and connect together like a twisted puzzle with the changing realities of the present day characters - three people desperately clinging on to who they believe they once were. Written by Nick Lane
A story of friendship, fish pie and flick-tokick football. Andy Green’s dad needs a recipe for toast. He thinks that tortilla fought King Kong and that Tiramisu played midfield for Brazil in the 1974 World Cup. In short, he’s rubbish. Good at Subbuteo; hopeless with spaghetti. 12
So when Andy’s mum dies, Andy does the decent thing, he takes a month off work and moves back home with his dad to teach him how to cook. Fighting memories and occasionally each other - and risking the sanity of friends and neighbours, not to mention Andy’s new girlfriend, the pair boil pans, set grills on fire and worse in an attempt to prevent a diet of pickled beetroot and jam sandwiches (not necessarily in that order).
Can their relationship survive? Or is this is one kitchen nightmare even Gordon Ramsay couldn’t fix? 'Right now, no Yorkshire playwright is writing with more affectionate humour, comic punch and lovable cheek than Lane.' - Charles Hutchinson, York Press
