LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Year of Growth AVID is officially one year old, we made it!!! 2018 has been a great year although it started off rough. This past year has been full of bumps and bruises, but it has been a year of growth. In 2016, I set out to help business owners get their businesses recognized because of my personal struggles. I created a media outlet and over this past year, AVID Magazine has featured over 700 businesses, events, and entrepreneurs via social media, our website, and through our quarterly digital magazine. I am forever grateful for Christian Mukes of Unique Interactions, Tameika Byrd of Enhancing Massage and BodyWorks, Cecilia Austin of Simply Cecilia and Yellow Bandit Media, Cortney Ross-Davis of Cortney’s Sweet Creations, Delorean Hogan of Fallbrook Dream Girls, Carista Ward of Carista’s Kreations, Randwell Johnson of 1080 Photoz, Meagan Phillips Make-up Artistry, Eric and Deandrea Prince of Total Precision Shooting and Realtor Ja’tonia Youngblood for all saying YES to the first issue. In February, I attended my first business conference and it was great. During the conference, I found my phrase of 2018 “Let Me Be Great.” Thanks, Distinguished One Apparel! For many years people could see my greatness but I could not. I would shrink, hide and just want to blend but it never worked. After seeing the shirt “Let Me Be Great,” I was done with dimming my
light. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” -Matthew 5:16 I was honored to travel to Cabo, San Lucas this summer for the Girl Bosses Retreat with 32 lovely entrepreneurs creating and killing it in their own lanes. I can’t wait to go on the next trip! This year I started volunteering with a wonderful non-profit organization, We See Abilities and to just be able to see the smiles on those faces has been the biggest reward. Most people only want accolades, pictures to post on social media, and association to greatness. However, for me, I just want to help make a difference. Soar in 2019 and never feel bad about your blessings. Here are some points to focus on. 1. Keep God first, pray, and stay humble. 2. Focus on your purpose 3. Develop a different mindset. JOURNALISM IS A JOURNEY. Mine started with music writing, something I dived into right after earning a journalism degree that few employers cared about during a recession. Brilliant. I learned by trial and error as I began interviewing artists and other figures, eventually branching out to write about culture, entertainment, films, politics and whatever else made my pen jump. I think of life as an adventure, so I’ve pushed myself to try things I never imagined; pushing myself to do everything from hosting a radio show to covering red carpet events, working as a stage manager and more. Stepping out on faith - or better yet, swan diving out the damn window - in 2015 I launched Yellow Bandit Media, a creative writing agency that collaborates with brands, businesses and entrepreneurs. Long story short, I pulled a group of writers together to make a platform for

creatives - allowing us to offer content writing, media consulting, press releases, professional bios and other creative content. A writer and journalist, I currently freelance and travel for a number of local and national publications - and also speak at events, schools and more. Author of budget travel book, “Wanderlust: For the Young, Broke Professional.” Deidre Mathis is known as the budget traveler. She is the first African-American female to own a hostel in the United States. Mathis has visited over 40 countries. Deidre has visited 16 of those 40 countries solo. She managed to travel to 12 countries in 12 months for less than $12,000. Mathis stayed in hostels while traveling the world and her experiences sparked her interest. Plan for more - Don’t plan for the exact amount you need save as much or more than you need. 3. Make sure you have a plan. 4. Be flexible. It’s for the best because you never know what’s going to happen. 5. Practice self-care to refresh every week. You need to put a plan in place to help keep your mind off work. Our queso recipe was actually created for our son and his friends when they would come over for a visit. Before we knew it, we were cooking queso for family gatherings, parties, and so on…everyone loved it. So, one day we decided to sell it. Embrace Moment

T
his has been a year of eye-opening moments. I have learned so much in 2018 but the best take away is what I learned from those moments. I learned that the word friend is used so loosely in business. Well, in society period. What is the definition of a friend? According to Merriam Webster, 1: a person who has a strong liking for and trust in another person. 2: a person who is not an enemy friend or foe. 3: a person who helps or supports something. As we prepare to walk into 2019, I have a question for you to ask yourself.
So what do you do when you learn differently. Take note, when people show you who they are, believe them...the first time. Remember sometimes actions speak louder than words. What are they doing to support you, encourage you or push you? A true friend considers the other person’s well being to be as valuable as their own. All I can tell you is to remember those people who actually do appreciate you. Those are the people who count. If someone can’t do that for you, it’s their loss. If you have a true friend, tell them, “I am so blessed to have a friend like you - someone who I can be honest with and never be afraid to hold back. Someone who has my back and not a knife in my back.”
Do you have true friendships around you?… “EVERYONE is different. Having a true friendship doesn’t mean you always agree with one another, it doesn’t mean always relating or finding things in common. True friendships are those that allow you to be yourself without fear of judgment. It means accepting all flaws and finding the silver lining in them because you love the person who has these flaws. And even if you don’t like these flaws, you find some way to communicate that and help the person you love change or deal with them. True friendships don’t mean abandonment and lost hope. Relationships and friendships are lots of work. That’s just how it is. If you disagree, you’re just making a string of excuses. I have experienced betrayal in 2018 in the category of friends and many of you reading this article may have experienced the same. Hopefully, you will take what I have learned and apply it to your life. I had to come to grips with the reality that everyone who says friend, is not your friend.

I’m so grateful for my true friends and the sense of security they give me and I just want to give it back to you, everyone, and the world. I hope you will always unconditionally be a true friend and have a true friend in your life. Life is truly better with real friends. I pray that as you walk into this new year, you will be the friend you desire and even if you are not being the best friend you need to be, please know you can work hard every day to be that true friend. Killing it in the Mix Anthony Bates is not putting any limits on his gifts not only does he DJ but he is also a Photographer and Videographer. Known by many as DJ Anthraxx for “killing it in the mix” or Thraxx the Shooter. Bates has wanted to DJ since he was a child and after his first party at Prairie View University, he has not looked back. Although it has not been an easy road he has not stop pursuing his dream. In 2016, he took a break from mixing after a tragic accident of a close friend but sometimes your destiny will not leave you alone. “Your reality is not your reality it’s what you make it. Form your thought process into what you want it to be.” One day while in the music store, Anthraxx realized that he missed mixing and he decided that it was time to return. However this time around, he was going to decide his terms and what type of events he worked. Getting back on the scene was not easy because everyone is basically a DJ now. Anthraxx is grateful that his fan base has grown with him and still continues to support him. Anthraxx is inspired by DJ Jazzy Jeff and he wants to be blessed enough to still be in the game after 20 plus years. Finally, they were able to get their first client and since that day, they have not stopped, the fleet has grown and business has continued to thrive. The Chatman’s Women’s Foundation Shantera is Managing Partner of C+A Global Group, a women-owned, people-focused consulting firm. She is a strategic organizational engagement and adoption consultant with experience in organizational change management, project management, process improvement, and transition management. She frequently facilitates discussions on leadership, diversity, and self-esteem at her alma mater, Texas A&M University. She has worked throughout her career to help others discover their leadership talents through group facilitation, motivational speeches, and other workshops/seminars. Shantera has 22

“A thankful heart is rarely disappointed.” Having an attitude of gratitude tends to put you in a better position than not being grateful. We are often reminded about the importance of giving thanks around the Thanksgiving and winter holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, and other holidays celebrated all around the world that tend to fall in November and December.) People are generally kinder, more generous, and less edgy around these times. I am convinced that because of this we tend to see more breakthroughs, less hate, and more miracles during this time of the year. I am also convinced that if we let this positive attitude linger beyond November and December that we may see more of the good stuff mentioned above at other times during the year. In addition to the breakthroughs, love, and miracles, the impact of gratitude starts on the inside and shows up on the outside. Research links gratitude to lower stress levels and positive emotions. Most of us need to reduce our stress levels (or manage them better) and who couldn’t use an extra dose of joy, love, and happiness? Gratitude also contributes to healthier relationships and can be a great coping mechanism for
dealing with life. Things seem to be flow better when you are in a relationship with those who are appreciative of who you are and what you do. That does not mean you will not have bumps in the road, but it does support greater synergy. Giving thanks can also be a great coping mechanism for dealing with life. Life can be tough. Gratitude keeps you focused on the good in the midst of the bad. If you recognize that your attitude of gratitude could use some improving, here are a few ways to do so. There are the traditional means of expressing a grateful heart. Thank you notes and simply saying thank you will never go out of style. Manners still matter. The not so usual ways to express your gratitude include impromptu gifts, expressions, or something completely out of the box. Consider putting some work into expressing thanks with intentionality and look for where positivity blossoms. Remember, “You learn something new every day.”

If you could offer any advice to someone wanting to follow your path what would it be? Do it! Leaving my corporate job to pursue makeup full time has been the most spiritually rewarding thing I’ve ever done for myself! Now, know first that it isn’t for the faint of heart. THERE WILL BE STRUGGLE. In the beginning, you will most likely feel you are stuck for a long time, there is less freedom than working for someone else. You will be humbled. BUT if you remain diligent and put forth your very best product and energy EVERY TIME, you’re sure to win. “Hard work beats talent when talent won’t work hard.” Glam Tram Tx’s Golden Nuggets: People will try to talk you out of it, but don’t be afraid of bartering and doing gratis work. What do you specialize in? I am the CEO of Hailey Kisses, a cosmetic lip line that offers an array of lip glosses and lipsticks. There are a total of 20 cosmetic lip products on the Hailey Kisses line currently. Hailey’s kisses is just one of the many ventures you have, tell us what else are you involved with. In addition to Hailey’s Kisses, I am the Founder of a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Covered By The Blood, Inc was formed to spread awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia Disease. I am a professional actress and I was featured in the high proclaimed film the Free State of Jones, as well as appeared as an extra on NCIS New Orleans twice. I’ve starred in a commercial for Bright House Networks and can be seen in advertisement ads for Academy Sports and Outdoors. I have been modeling since the age of 5 years old and has walked in many runway events all around the United States including the prestigious stage in New York Fashion Week. Tell us what’s the why behind the non-profit organization? I founded my non-profit because of the struggles that I saw my grandmother go through with Sickle Cell and I want to educate and spread awareness so that kids are aware of this disease and they know how to not bring another Sickle Cell baby into the world. The fact that I am a kidpreneur and I began my business at the age of 11 years old. I already know what I want in life and I’m working toward it at an early age. The Hailey Kisses brand is not only for kids and teens but its also for adults as well. All ages can rock my products because I have something for everyone. As far as other kidpreneurs, what set me apart from them is my personality, passion, and work ethic. I put a lot into my business as well as I am not only a CEO but I am also a non-profit founder which shows how I give back to the community. My work schedule also includes acting and modeling which means I have several careers and businesses I have to work on all while remaining an honor roll student. What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? The quote that I live by is “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” I live by this because I believe in all of dreams and aspirations. I was taught that I can do anything in the big world that I want to do. Therefore, I live my life striving for every dream that I can possibly dream and in the process, I want to show the world you don’t have to be an adult to reach your life goals. If you could offer any advice to someone wanting to follow your path what would it be? The advice that I would give to anyone following in my path would
be to dream big because the bigger the dream the bigger the reality. I would also tell them to prepare themselves for closed doors and rejections but to continue to strive for everything that they want in life because it’s worth fighting for. My biggest struggles were being able to accept constructive criticisms and having balance in my life with everything that I have going on. However, once I found balance and have been able to accept constructive criticism I’ve become a better business owner, daughter, friend, and student.

She has always had a love for media since the 6th grade. Davis fell in love with the name Media Eyecon and she continued to develop her skills in college. After graduating in 2014, like every other graduate, she tried to find work but only desk jobs were available. Davis knew she was worth more than that desk position. “Know your worth and believe in yourself.”
During her time working for the network viewers were increased by millions and everything was good but she realized that she was working hard for someone else. On her 2 year anniversary, she put in her two weeks notice.
During a mixer hosted by Matthew Knowles, Davis met an older guy who invited her to meet up with him the next day. When she met up with the guy the next day, she realized that he was the owner. He offered her a sales position. She was offered her own tv show. Media Eyecon was live on the tv network and aired once 42

What inspired you to start a television network? “The issue is with us, all we have to do is create it.” At 25 a friend suggested me to start my own network while chatting at a wedding. Two weeks later I overheard someone talking about a tv station for sale. So I called the next day to schedule a meeting. At this time the youngest person in history to own a network was 37 and I was only 25. The owner
really wanted to work with me but I could not afford to purchase the station. After praying about it I made a list of 10 people that I thought would help me and I prayed again about the people I put on the list. I met with 9 of those people. No one gave me a complete no but I still had not received any money. I had one couple that I had not met with yet. They were number 10 on the list. I had made up in my mind that I was not going to ask them for any money just advice. After meeting with the couple they asked me how much money I needed. The couple wrote the check for the entire amount with no strings attached. I purchased the station in December 2017. A month was used to plan and we launched in February of 2018. rake Studios is a multimedia production company that focuses on corporate, small businesses, music videos, script writing, set design, and post productions videography. George Drake dreamed of being a video game programmer when it came to picking a career. Sometimes life has a way of pushing us in other directions and this was just the beginning for Drake. In 1999, Drake started web design for churches after self-teaching himself because of his interest in programming. Web design was new and it became a passion for him helping him land his first major client, Windsor Village Methodist Church. After creating a great website for the church, word quickly spread about Drake opening the doors to many clients. After working for several churches he decided to turn his new passion into a business and Creative Concepts was born. After venturing into photography and later videography Drake changed the name to Drake Studios after his last name plus too many other businesses were named Creative Concepts. Eventually, Drake decided to narrow his talents down to one focus by giving up web design and focusing on photography and videographer. After a few years, his passion for video grew stronger

and he started to send his cousin his clients for photography. High-end wedding videography became his niche. He loved the journey of being able to tell a couples love story and reflect the feelings and the atmosphere of their special once-in-a-lifetime event. He was able to artistically capture details of expressions conveying particular emotions, and symbolic details. His multiple cameras were able to capture different angles and dimensions and his perfect combination of the artistic mind, highend HD technology, and latest editing techniques truly set the bar. If you could pick one word that describes you, what would it be and why? Creative. Creativity is something you can’t teach; people can mimic things that they look at but can’t execute them. I have an eye for creating a great vision. What are some things that you know now that you wish you would have known when you first started your business? To be more organized and have a maturity level for business. Try not to do everything yourself by being too greedy. I made a lot of money but I also lost a lot of money because I was all over the place. The key is to focus on one thing.
