Banff Centre is the only time you can wear hiking boots to a concert hall. Banff Centre is art that’s breathtaking. At an altitude that doesn’t help. Banff Centre is “I wish I could do that”. Banff Centre is

Welcome to the Festival On behalf of the Festival team, welcome to Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Located on Treaty 7 Territory, we acknowledge the past, present, and future generations of Stoney Nakoda, Blackfoot and Tsuu T’ina Nations who help us steward this land as well as honour and celebrate this place.

In our experience, the mountain community has always been a welcoming one. We relish time spent together in the hills and at the Festival, and we all enjoy seeing the reactions of first-timers to Banff. The stories told here are as diverse and as wide as this great mountain range we live in and we are proud to say that this year’s program includes more global voices than ever before. Films like The Weight of Water, Craig’s Reaction, and Stumped show us that physical disability never means inability and we watch in awe at the achievements of these athletes. From circumnavigating the globe, to outrageously long treks, to weekend trail runs, Sarah Outen, J.R. Harris, and Mirna Valerio (The Mirnavator) ask us to re-define the characteristics that make us adventurers. The possibilities seem as endless as the personalities who identify themselves as explorers, mountaineers or outdoorsy folk. And the Brotherhood of Skiing and Bawli Booch remind us how much fun we can have along the way.

Treeline, Big Lonely Doug, and Bird of Prey suggest that all living beings can have relationships and as humans we should try to understand how our natural world speaks to us both literally and metaphorically. Our human connection to the outdoors supersedes gender, age, and ancestry. Understanding our place in the world in the present moment hints at only splinters of a relationship that has existed for millennia, the depth of which we have yet to comprehend as the film Cielo reveals. Plan C-14 11, For the Love of Mary, and The Frenchy make us step out of the societal constraints of age and dive back into the youthful spirit that makes us all wide-eyed, first time adventurers. Stepping out of our comfort zone is something we do well at the Festival, just as Montréal based DJ JaBig does when he decides to Escape the city and cycle to the Arctic Circle. Free Solo and The Dawn Wall leave the idea of a comfort zone far behind, and Andrzej Bargiel knows what it means to put everything on the line as he skis down 8000-metre peaks in No Ski No Fun. The relationship with yourself sometimes speaks loudest when your natural environment offers little sympathy. So what does it mean to call yourself a mountaineer or an explorer? The answers are as diverse as the stories we celebrate at this festival and the people who tell them. But we know one thing for sure, the outdoors will always pull us together.

Pat Morrow and Jeremy Schmidt Searching for Tao Canyon

Jan Redford

End of the Rope 10 – 11:30 A.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15

At a time before guidebooks and high-resolution satellite images, Pat Morrow, Jeremy Schmidt, and Art Twomey spent spring and fall seasons over ten years hauling their cameras through the wildest slot canyons they could find in the American Southwest. Together they reveal an exquisite world in Searching for Tao Canyon. Mountains challenge her. Her marriage almost destroys her. And motherhood could have been the breaking point. End of the Rope is a raw climbing memoir from author Jan Redford. How she climbs out of the hole she dug for herself is as thrilling and inspiring as any of her climbs.

(Nepal, 2016, 82 min) NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE Director and Producer: Kesang Tseten Production Company: Shunyata Film Production

In his documentary, Stanislaw Berbeka revives the memory of his father, Maciej Berbeka. Thanks to the accounts of fellow climbers, family members and archival recordings, we can gain a better insight into the life of this eminent Polish mountaineer and traveller.

Langtang was among the worst hit regions in Nepal’s 2015 earthquake. A glacial collapse caused an avalanche of rock, ice and mud, resulting in an airblast, equal to half the force of the Hiroshima atom bomb. In capturing survivor responses to the disaster, the film reveals a transformation that has been sweeping the Himalaya over the last decades.

Mountain Exhibitions AT BANFF CENTRE The Cave Young Joon Kwak (USA) Walter Phillips Gallery September 29 – December 14 THE CAVE will explore the cultural phenomena of the 'man cave'— the refuge of masculinity within the household. Refusing this possibility for retreat, THE CAVE reflects on the cultural understandings of these spaces, and will feature a newly commissioned video collaboration with Kim Ye that responds to the site of the exhibition within the context of Banff National Park.

The Climbers Jim Herrington (USA)* Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Building, Lobby September 1 – November 5 A selection of photographs from Jim Herrington’s book The Climbers, the culmination of a 20-year project to document the surviving legendary climbers of the early-to-mid 20th Century ‘Golden Age’ of climbing. These climbers were vertically active between the 1920s and 1970s and were at the cutting-edge of an activity mostly unknown to the general public of the time.

John Fellows’ signature “contemporary folk” style weaves together layers of found paper, graphic block prints and handwritten text to create an old time, hands-on feel. He collects a variety of materials dating from the 1880’s to the present to create unique linoleum carving collages that reflect his personal experiences, but are also like a brief glimpse into someone else’s story.

Exploring how having adventures changes our relationship to the landscape, from being a spectator stood in awe of the land to a participant with an intimate connection to it.

Laszlo Funtek Building Exterior, Theatre Complex August 2018 – September 2019 The Afghan Pamirs is a high, remote and road-less region at the end of the Wakhan Corridor, where the Afghan Kyrgyz follow a nomadic life, intimately dependent on herds of sheep, yaks and camels for food, transport, fuel, and shelter and as trade for other essentials. In winter, it is a harsh, windswept and mostly monochrome world, brightened by the bright red worn by the women and girls.

Special Jury Mention: Arctic Foxes – The Bold Ones Matthew Polverosa Kline (USA) Professional Development Centre Lobby October 1 – November 30 Observing three Arctic fox pups learn the ways of their kind while growing up fast in the Scandinavian Mountains was an endearing experience. These charismatic, curious, and bold foxes are one of the most well adapted mammals to cold conditions on Earth. Nevertheless, this keystone species remains critically endangered throughout Scandinavia, despite over 75 years of protection.

Willock & Sax Gallery 210 Bear Street

October 27 – November 10

Two bears. One canoe. What could possibly happen? Everything. The Curious Bear is a continuing series where the relationships between ‘us' and wildlife and ‘us' and leisure is explored, only to take the ‘us’ out of it, injecting a sense of total chaos (even with best laid plans). Jason Carter continues to use bold brilliant colours as he merges humour and whimsy with true Canadiana.

Jeremy Mayne explores, within his own vocabulary of colour, collage and other media on paper, the grandeur of mountain peaks and the glorious colour of our mountain lakes with their sunshine, glacial till and breathtaking iridescence. Jeremy Mayne has lived and taught art in a number of places in Alberta, he is currently living in Nanton, AB.

Banff Public Library 101 Bear Street October 1 – November 13 Jeremiah Marsh is a well-bearded wilderness photographer who moved to Banff from Southern California in the summer of 2012 and has never second-guessed his decision to trade sandy beaches for the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He says that having easy access to these vast and ancient landscapes has stirred his creativity and, through his work, his emotional connection with nature.

Film Competition and International Jury The 2018 Banff Mountain Film Competition received 392 films submitted from 35 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our dedicated pre-screening committee who viewed all of the entries. From these, 87 finalists were selected. This year’s Festival features over 50 premieres (Can/USA/World) including 19 world premieres. During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and determines the award winners. A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the finest quality. The awards are announced on Sunday evening, November 4 in the Eric Harvie Theatre. The winners will be announced online at banffmountainfestival.ca..

Book Competition and International Jury The 25th annual Banff Mountain Book Competition again saw one of the largest number of entries ever submitted and was an exceptional year for quality work. Our diligent volunteer readers helped narrow down the long list of category finalists from 145 books from 14 countries in seven categories, before the international jury went to work reading all 27 finalists to determine the award winners.

Larry Stanier

Ian Welsted

Paula Wright

Stanier is a reader who is frequently distracted by his climbing, skiing and mountain guiding. Gaston Rebuffat’s films and books were an early inspiration and Greg Child’s Thin Air rekindled his faith in Mountain Literature. Kelly Cordeses The Tower has left him deeply distracted by dreams of Cerro Torre. Canmore is home but this year will see him guiding (and reading) in the Mountains of Tierra del Feugo, Antarctica, Japan, Georgia, Italy, Iceland, and Nepal.

Welsted is a local guide who enjoys outings in the mountains for the friendships formed more than the summits achieved. One of two Canadians to receive a Piolet D'Or for his climbs in the Karkoram, he has traveled extensively both for climbing and for cultural enlightenment. An admirer of fine writing and of wild mountain vistas, Welsted is forever on the search for the next great novelist.

Wright is the host of the Alpinist Podcast and is the associate editor at Alpinist magazine. She is also a doctoral candidate in the English department at the University of Oregon where she was a Jane Krohn Fellow in Literature and the Environment. Her writing has appeared in Mountain Gazette, Misadventures, the American Alpine Journal, Alpinist, Badlands, and other publications. Though she currently spends most of her time at a desk, she looks forward to returning to Wyoming's Wind River Range.

Summit of Excellence Award 2018 Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is proud to announce 73-yearold Jacques Olek as the 2018 recipient of the Summit of Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding individual who made a significant contribution to mountain life in Canada. Regarded as a pioneer in the Quebec mountaineering community, Olek devoted his life to mountain culture by leading difficult winter expeditions around the world and teaching the love of climbing to others.

“Jacques is a pioneer who spent a lifetime promoting mountain culture,” said Louis Rousseau, Summit of Excellence selection committee member. “He's a humanist who travels not to conquer mountains, but to let his heart be conquered by the people he meets. He inspired so many to dream big, to go beyond, to play outside with passion and have the feeling of being free.” A proud Canadian of Polish descent, Olek has been a leader to Canadian mountaineers for decades. A champion of winter climbing, he was part of a Polish-Canadian expedition that made the first winter summit of Cho Oyu (8201 metres) in 1985. In 1987-88, Olek joined a team of Polish, British, and Canadian climbers to attempt the first push for the summit of K2 in winter.

The team reached 7,300 metres before harsh conditions forced them to turn around. To this day, no one has made a winter ascent to the summit of K2. Olek ran an outdoor store in Montreal – Blacks International – allowing him to inspire thousands of Canadians to take on new challenges, learn new skills and be passionate about getting outside. He spent a lifetime building and supporting the outdoor community in Quebec, organizing the first Quebec expedition to Baffin Island in 1976 and to Mount Logan in 1978. Arriving in Canada after fleeing the Soviet-controlled Poland on foot across the Alps to Austria, Olek has a long list of climbs around the world: in Pakistan, Mongolia, China, Tibet including some of the world’s most challenging peaks (Nanga Parbat, Shishapangma, Makalu, to name a few).

“In 1981, I met visionary Polish mountain climber Andrzej Zawada,” said Summit of Excellence award winner Jacques Olek, “the leader of a Polish national expedition who made the first winter ascent of Everest in 1980, paving the way for the winter climbing tradition on the 8000ers. This meeting was crucial because it allowed Canadian mountaineers to contribute to the Himalayan winter climbing history.”

Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival Partners Presenting Partners Major Partners

Banff & Lake Louise Tourism inspires the world to experience the indelible awe of Banff and Lake Louise, home of Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival.

Rab began in 1981 in the attic of a small, terraced house in Sheffield, Scotland where Rab Carrington made the first sleeping bag to bear his name. Hand-stitched and devised with his own ingenious eye, Rab's experience from years spent in the mountains was apparent in his designs, and soon there was popular demand from Rab's friends and the growing local climbing community. But things didn't stop there. Word soon spread, and the Sheffield attic became a factory floor, creating sleeping bags and jackets for customers far and wide. Now, decades later, those honest, hardwearing designs can be found all over the world; wherever adventurous individuals face up to the elements. Rab is the official and exclusive apparel for the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival and World Tour Canada and United States Screenings.

A Very Special Thanks

People Behind the Scenes The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is truly a team effort. Thank you to Banff Centre President and CEO Janice Price and the Board of Governors. Thank you to all staff across Banff Centre who help us create the largest and most prestigious festival of its kind in the world. We wish to express our gratitude to John Amatt, founding director of the Festival in 1976, and to Bernadette McDonald, whose visionary leadership took the Festival to the world stage. Plus we would like to thank the dozens of individuals and organizations who have provided their time, expertise, services, and products to

Mountain Performance Eyewear

make our Festival one of the most significant events of the year for the mountaineering community in North America. We would also like to thank the more than 120 volunteers from places as far away as Italy, Mexico, the UK, and across North America – and of course our local volunteers from the Bow Valley. A very special thanks to everyone behind the scenes, without whose time, effort, and dedication, there would be no Festival.

We couldn’t do it without you!
