Where can you find the best mountain films, books, photography, and internationally-renowned personalities – all in one place, all at one time? Nowhere else but right here at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival! Banff is a fabulous place to be any time, but during these nine days, the Bow Valley comes alive with the energy created when the global mountain community comes together. It’s magical! We’ve been working hard to get ready for your arrival. By the time you settle into your seats and 3 the lights go down in one of our four theatres, thousands of hours will have been spent reviewing films and reading books, all in an effort to create an exciting and well-balanced program. You’ll have to make choices. Gone are the days when you could see everything the Festival has to offer. These days, you’ll have to choose between multiple film programs, speaker presentations, book signings, readings, seminars, exhibitions, the mountain marketplace, the art and craft sale, live music, even wine tastings. It might seem impossible to take in everything that appeals to you, but the fun will be in the trying. You can’t lose! Now in its 80th year, The Banff Centre – the home of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival – is the largest arts and creativity incubator in the world. Our mission is inspiring creativity. Every

year, over 8,000 artists, leaders, and researchers from across Canada and around the world participate in multidisciplinary programs like our Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop, Mountain and Wilderness Writing Program, and Banff Wilderness Photography Workshop. The Banff Centre provides these participants with the support they need to create, to develop solutions, and to make the impossible possible. The Festival is proud to be a flagship program of The Banff Centre, and we hope you’ll take advantage of some of the other amazing events that happen here year round. Three young Mongolians dream of an international career as cross-country skiers. Their ultimate goal is to represent their country in the Olympic Games. Shamanitic rituals and Buddhist prayers are all part of the required training regime as financial shortfalls, equipment failure, and personal dilemmas haunt them at every turn.

This latest chapter in the history of Cerro Torre is like a soap opera of egos, icons, and audacity. David Lama, one of the world’s finest climbers, recently completed the first free ascent on Cerro Torre’s Southeast Ridge – arguably the hardest alpine climbing route in the world.

Cerro Torre: A Snowball’s Chance in Hell, a Red Bull Media House production, is as much about making a film on an incredibly challenging mountain as it is about Lama’s feat in itself. Lama will be in Banff to present the North American Premiere of the film, and will do an extended Q&A with the Festival audience. 9:45 p.m. (BREAK, 20 mIN)

Counting on People is the North American premiere of two new video artworks co-commissioned by Walter Phillips Gallery, The Banff Centre, and the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA), London.

Chris Burkard’s Arctic surfing essay tackles a sport that is commonly spectacular, but takes it into a location that is also surprising and otherworldly. Each image captures a masterfully executed moment, is visually and conceptually distinct from the others, and fits together to tell a well-rounded and compelling adventure story. Not a word is needed and although we do see just enough, we are left begging for more.

Hudson’s work is a form of visual anthropology that blurs the boundaries between research, documentation, voyeurism, personal journaling, and art. A native of southern Alberta, Tom Willock has been photographing the landscape of his home for over 50 years. Tom’s photographs are as constructed as the traditional (non-digital) medium will allow. It proceeds to the development of an image; the composition, the timing and technique, the darkroom process, all translating the perspective, the idea.

2014 BanFF MOunTain BOOk COMpeTiTiOn The 21st annual Banff Mountain Book Competition saw one of the largest number of entries ever submitted and was an exceptional year for quality work. Our diligent volunteer readers helped narrow down the long list of category finalists from 144 books in five categories, before the international jury went to work to determine the award winners.

inTernaTiOnal Jury ED DOUGLAS (UK) is an award-winning author of eight books about mountains and their people, and is a journalist whose work most often appears in the Observer and as a contributor to the Country Diary in the Guardian. He has a particular passion for the Himalaya – climbing and trekking there for almost two decades – and reporting on the Nepali civil war and its aftermath. His books include the first fulllength biography of Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, which was chosen as one of the ten best adventure biographies by Outside Magazine. DAVID ROBERTS (USA) is a Harvard graduate and was once a cutting-edge climber in his own right. Roberts is the author of 25 books on adventure, mountaineering, and exploration, and he has won the Prix Méditerrané, the Prix du Salon de Livre de Passy, the Prix d’Autrans, the American Alpine Club Literary Award, a Folio magazine award, and the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Book Competition. In 2001, his books The Mountain of My Fear and Deborah were ranked by National Geographic Adventure among the 100 best adventure books ever written. In 2013, Roberts’ book Alone on the Ice won a Special Jury Mention at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. ANIK SEE (NED) has travelled the world by bicycle for more than 25 years, in places such as Patagonia, the Caucasus mountains, India and Sri Lanka. Her writing has appeared in National Geographic, The Walrus, Brick, The National Post and, as a contributing editor, Outpost Magazine. She is the author of four books, all of which reflect her love of remote cultures, landscape, and the possibility of place. In 2014, Anik was a writer-in-residence at the Pierre Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon. She lives in Amsterdam.

suMMiT OF exCellenCe award 2014 Awarded to climber Urs Kallen Presented by the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival at The Banff Centre since 1987 and sponsored by Patagonia Banff, the annual Summit of Excellence Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to mountain life in the Canadian Rockies. It is presented in memory of Calgary climber Bill March, an internationally respected mountaineer, author, and educator, who led Canada’s first successful Everest climb in 1982. The selection committee for 2014 included Joanna Croston, Programming Director of the Banff Mountain Festival, mountaineer Nancy Hansen, Bernadette McDonald, author and former Vice-President of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre, and climber and writer Geoff Powter. Over the years Urs has built up a solid record of difficult climbs: first ascents of Mount Fay north face (1968), Mount Athabasca north face (1968), Mount Victoria north face (1969), Mount Patterson north face direct (1973), the first winter ascent of Stanley

Peak north face (1969); second ascents of Balrog, the east face of Mount Babel and the north face of Chinaman’s Peak; early repeats of the Beckey/Chouinard on South Howser Tower, the Supercouloir on Deltaform Mountain and the east face of Bubaboo Spire. However, Urs is best known for his new routes on Yamnuska. Climbing with Billy Davidson, he created CMC Wall in 1972 and Yellow Edge in 1974. These two aid routes were great achievements for their day. In 1997, with Jeff Marshall, he made a 25th anniversary ascent of CMC Wall, this time with no aid. Urs recently philosophized, ‘The early climbs, when you just get into climbing, are the most impressive ones. Later on … you go climbing looking for that same feeling, but you don’t really get it any more …. FilM COMpeTiTiOn and inTernaTiOnal Jury The 2014 Banff Mountain Film Competition saw 372 films submitted from 32 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, who viewed ALL 372 films. From these, 84 finalists were selected. This year’s Festival features over 35 World and North American premieres. During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and determines the award winners.

Benoît Aymon Swiss journalist Benoît Aymon created and co-produced the show Passe-Moi les Jumelles (Pass Me the Binoculars), which ran for 22 years on Swiss public television (TSR). He also created reality-television programs including Mountain Rescue (2001), Occupation: Guide (2003), Le Haute Route Chamonix – Zermatt in the summer (2006) and in the winter (2009), and a documentary series The Matterhorn Tour (2013). His film about mountaineer Erhard Loretan won 11 awards internationally. Benoît has also published four books about mountains and mountaineers.

Nicholas Brown London-based Nicholas Brown is a multiple award-winning producer and director of television programs focused on the natural world. His 20 years of experience in American and British film and television includes work in extreme conditions and remote locations around the world. Recent credits including the Emmy-winning Global Warming: What You Need to Know, two episodes of BBC’s Human Planet (Mountains – Life in Thin Air and Arctic – Life in the Deep Freeze which won two BAFTA awards) and the forth-coming Earth in the Age of Man for PBS films.
