THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3 Old Style Storytelling
True Exposure
8:30 – 9:45 A.M. Max Bell Building Room 252 Free
12:30 – 1:45 P.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15
Back to traditional ways of storytelling, without the campfire – enjoy authentic and off-the-cuff tales from some of the Rockies’ best story-tellers including Urs Kallen, Dale Portman, Lynn Martel, Trevor Sexsmith, and Sharon Wood. Hosted by Chic Scott.
Sixty Meters to Anywhere Brendan Leonard
Crocodiles and Ice Jon Turk
10 – 11:30 A.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15
Sixty Meters to Anywhere is the painfully honest story of a life changed by climbing. When Brendan Leonard finished substance abuse treatment at age 23, he was lost. Then his brother gave him a climbing rope – and along that sixty-metre lifeline, Brendan gradually found redemption in the crags of the American West. Expeditionist and conservationist Jon Turk has spent most of the past 40 years roaming the world’s most extreme landscapes. His latest book is the third in a trilogy chronicling his journeys. Crocodiles and Ice: A Journey into Deep Wilderness is the story of a scientist-adventurer’s profound attachment to wild places. Book Signings follow most presentations

Andy Kirkpatrick
Andy Kirkpatrick likes long, hard climbs in cold and dreary places. His 2008 book Psychovertical and the 2011 Cold Wars were brimming with hilarious and dumbfounding stories from the British climber’s life on big walls and winter expeditions. A gifted storyteller and world-class alpinist, Kirkpatrick is an alumni of the Banff Mountain and Wilderness Writing Program and returns this year to present some of his new fiction.
Warnings Against Myself David Stevenson
The Bold and Cold Brandon Pullan
2 – 3:30 P.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 David Stevenson is the author of the fiction collection Letters from Chamonix which won the Banff Mountain Book Award for Fiction in 2014. He will be speaking about his newly-published essay collection Warnings Against Myself. Based in Alaska, he has been the book reviews editor of the American Alpine Journal since 1995. Over the past 100 years, climbers have been pushing standards with cuttingedge ascents in the Canadian Rockies. Peaks such as Robson, Chephren, Kitchener, the Twins and Mt. Alberta elude many and reward few. Join local climber and author Brandon Pullan as he shares the 25 most classic routes in the Canadian Rockies and what impact their ascents have had in the world of international alpinism.
“ … this is what I love, what inspires me. I am relaxed for the first time in weeks because I am out here on this ledge, finding a line up a granite wall and following my instincts.” – Brendan Leonard

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Catherine Destivelle and Book Awards 7:30 P.M. | Eric Harvie Theatre | $35 The program begins with the presentation of the 2016 Banff Mountain Book Competition awards. Catherine Destivelle is one of the most celebrated alpinists of all time. She was climbing some of the highest peaks in the Alps by the age of 17. She was unbeatable at world cup competitions in the late 1980s, but was drawn towards the realm of mountaineering. She has since made solo winter ascents of the Eiger, the Grandes Jorasses and the Matterhorn. Destivelle followed those feats with an unprecedented 11-day solo first ascent of the West Face of Les Drus in Chamonix as well as cutting-edge ascents in Pakistan and the Himalaya. Presentation followed by films in competition.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4 Voices of Adventure: An Interview with Paul Pritchard
Wolf Spirit
10 – 11:30 A.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15
Kevin Van Tighem
In the 1990s, British-born climber Paul Pritchard was at the top of the international climbing scene. After winning the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature in 1997 for Deep Play, he spent his prize money on a climbing tour that found him ascending The Totem Pole in Tasmania – where he was hit by a boulder, sustaining a traumatic brain injury that left doctors questioning whether he would walk or talk again. Despite this prognosis, Pritchard has made remarkable progress and joins climber, writer, and psychologist Geoff Powter for a conversation about recovery and possibility.
Wild By Nature Sarah Marquis
12:30 – 1:45 P.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 Sarah Marquis likes to go for long walks. From 2010 through 2013, she walked over 16,000 kilometres across Asia and then across Australia, scrounging for water in the desert to surviving dengue fever alone in the Laos jungle. The 2016 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year chronicles this epic journey in her book Wild by Nature. Book Signings follow most presentations

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5
Lynn Hill 8 P.M. Eric Harvie Theatre | $35 Sponsored by MEC Lynn Hill is a living legend. In 1993, she changed the definition of what is possible in rock climbing with her first free ascent of the most famous big wall climb in the world, The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite. The following year, she freeclimbed it again, that time in less than a day. Over 19 years later, Tommy Caldwell and Hill are still the only two people in the world to have succeeded in making an all free one-day ascent of The Nose. She joins us in conversation with renowned Australian-born author and climber, Greg Child. Presentation followed by films in competition.
Denis Urubko – and Films 8 P.M. | Max Bell Auditorium | $35 Is there anything in the mountaineering world that accomplished Russian climber Denis Urubko hasn’t done? He has climbed all fourteen 8,000 metre peaks without supplementary oxygen, claimed the speed record up Mt. Elbrus, won the Piolet d’Or twice and has summited two 8,000 metre peaks in winter. Only K2 in winter remains for this seasoned, ambitious mountaineer. Urubko joins us in Banff for an engaging interview with award-winning writer Bernadette McDonald. Presentation followed by films in competition.
