Alex Honnold, Hadwin’s Judgement, and Book Awards

Voices of Adventure: An Interview with Simone Moro

7:30 P.M. | ERIC HARVIE THEATRE | $35

10 – 11:30 A.M. | MAX BELL AUDITORIUM | $15

The program begins with the presentation of the 2015 Banff Mountain Book Competition awards.

Simone Moro is a celebrated Italian alpinist who specializes in winter climbing: he holds the record for first winter ascents of 8000-metre peaks – Shishapangma, Makalu, and Gasherbrum II. A passionate climber, he is also an accomplished helicopter pilot and founder of a helicopter rescue program in Nepal. The recipient of countless awards, Moro returns to the Banff stage with his new book, The Call of the Ice for an intimate interview with climber, writer and psychologist Geoff Powter.

Who isn’t intrigued by Alex Honnold? The 30-yearold American superstar climbs in a way no one else would – without a partner or rope and on extremely difficult routes. In his new memoir, Alone on the Wall, Honnold and veteran climbing writer David Roberts team up to tell the stories behind the climbs. John Vaillant’s award-winning book The Golden Spruce is recreated in Sasha Snow’s new film Hadwin’s Judgement. BC logger and survivalist Grant Hadwin takes on a crusade against the devastation wrought by clear-cutting the world’s last great temperate rainforest.

The Tower: Kelly Cordes 12:30 - 1:45 P.M. | MAX BELL AUDITORIUM | $15

Climbing Cerro Torre wasn’t enough for American alpinist Kelly Cordes. After reaching the summit, he began an exhausting two-year journey of research to get to the bottom of the iconic Argentine peak’s notorious controversies – culminating in his book The Tower: A Chronicle of Climbing and Controversy on Cerro Torre. Book signings follow most presentations.

The Rockies Traverse – and Films

Best of the Festival: Awards Night and Films

8 P.M. | ERIC HARVIE THEATRE | $35

8 P.M. | MARGARET GREENHAM THEATRE | $25

1978 saw the first ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. Several climbing ‘firsts’ were achieved in the 1980s, including a winter ascent of Annapurna and the world’s first climb rated 5.14b. In 1993, Lynn Hill wowed the world with the first free ascent of The Nose in Yosemite and this past year, Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold completed the first traverse of the Fitz Roy range in Patagonia. For “What’s Next?”we bring together a panel of the world’s top climbers – Simone Moro, Majka Burhardt, Raphael Slawinski, Tommy Caldwell and others – to discuss the future of climbing.

In the summer of 2014, two of the world’s finest adventurers met in McBride, BC and set flight for the US border, pushing the sport of paragliding, or more precisely vol-bivy or “fly camping”, as they flew 640 kilometres along and above the Canadian Rockies. Will Gadd and Gavin McClurg were named National Geographic Adventurers of the Year in 2014 for their 35-day journey. In the new film The Rockies Traverse, their pure elation at the adventure can’t help but make you smile.

7:30 P.M. | ERIC HARVIE THEATRE $25 – FILMS AND AWARDS

The panel discussion will be followed by The Citadel and films in competition.

Kit Deslauriers – and Films

The Citadel is the new film from adventure filmmaker Alastair Lee. It follows UK alpinists Matt Helliker and Jon Bracey as they tackle one of the hardest mixed lines ever conceived, deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Impeccably shot, this North American premiere will have you hanging on the edge of your seat.

Followed by films in competition.

8 P.M. | MAX BELL AUDITORIUM | $35

When American ski mountaineer Kit Deslauriers skied from the summit of Everest in 2006, she became the first person ever to ski from the Seven Summits. This raises many questions: How? Why? Was it legal? Is there even snow on all those mountains? Deslauriers shares the details of how she did it in her new memoir Higher Love – and how she pulled it all off in secret.

8 P.M. | MARGARET GREENHAM THEATRE AND MAX BELL AUDITORIUM $25 – FILMS ONLY

This is one of the most highly anticipated events at the Festival for both the audience and filmmakers, where the international film jury announces the Banff Mountain Film Competition award winners. Most of the winning films are re-screened and the 2015 Summit of Excellence Award is presented.
