David Lama, one of the world’s finest climbers, recently completed the first free ascent on Cerro Torre’s Southeast Ridge – arguably the hardest alpine climbing route in the world. Cerro Torre: A Snowball’s Chance in Hell, a Red Bull Media House production, is as much about making a film on an incredibly challenging mountain as it is about Lama’s feat in itself. Lama will be in Banff to present the North american Premiere of the film, and will do an extended Q&A with the Festival audience.

A Geography of Blood

Award-winning Canadian author Candace Savage embarks on a profound and dramatic journey through the eloquent landscape of the southern Canadian prairies. A Geography of Blood: unearthing Memory from a Prairie Landscape offers a shocking new version of plains history, survival and an unforgettable portrait of the windswept country of the Cypress Hills.

The Last Ocean

From the Rupal Face on Nanga Parbat, to the North Face of Les Droites, to the sketchy first ascent of the North Pillar of North Twin in the Canadian Rockies – in his new memoir The Calling: A Life Rocked by Mountains, alpinist Barry Blanchard tells the rock ‘em sock ‘em stories that fast tracked his initiation into the realm of climbing legends.

Jennifer Kingsley 2 – 3:30 P.m. | max BELL auditOrium | $15

Antarctica’s Ross Sea is the last ‘pristine’ ocean ecosystem on earth. Writer, photographer, and filmmaker John Weller presents The Last Ocean, a critically-acclaimed collection of photographs that raise awareness about the importance of active conservation and sustainability – even at the bottom of the world.

Great Bear Wild

Conservationist, photographer, and longtime Great Bear Rainforest resident ian McAllister takes us on a journey from the lush headwaters of the endangered region’s river valleys down to the hidden depths of the offshore world. Great Bear Wild, a stunning collection of photographs and personal narrative, is the product of twenty-five years of research and exploration.

Paddlenorth

“This book will open your eyes, first to the beauty of a world that lies beyond your sight. And more important, to the possibility of sustaining that far-off world that, in turn, sustains us.”

Writer Jennifer Kingsley heads out on an ambitious 54-day canoe odyssey towards the Arctic Ocean, battling gnarly winds, frigid waters and grizzly bears. Her latest book, Paddlenorth: A Journey into the Heart of the Tundra braids her trip with the histories of those who traced the tundra long before her voyage. Book signings follow presentations.

Voices of Adventure: An interview with Sandy Allan and Rick Allen

Sherpas – The Next Generation: Broughton Coburn

10 – 11:30 a.m. | max BELL auditOrium | $15

12:30 - 1:45 P.m. | max BELL auditOrium | $15

in a ‘Climb of the Century’, British climbers Sandy Allan and Rick Allen reached the summit of Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres) on July 15, 2012 – making the coveted first ascent of the Mazeno Ridge in an 18-day traverse. A staggering 13 kilometres, both committing and inescapable, the ridge is a monstrous undertaking with over seven summits above 7,000 metres.

Economic, demographic, and political shifts have been underway for some time on the hem of Everest, and were brought into focus by the tragic Khumbu icefall avalanche in April. Broughton Coburn shares a remarkable, little-told back story of a socio-economic transformation, and the global reach of this tiny ethnic group.

Geoff Powter interviews Allan and Allen in what is sure to be a lively discussion.

Book signings follow most presentations.

7:30 P.m. | EriC HarviE tHEatrE | $32

The program begins with the presentation of the 2014 Banff Mountain Book Competition awards. Brutal, irrational, massive – that’s Canada’s wildest ice cave at British Columbia’s Helmcken Falls in the heart of winter. Will Gadd, one of Canada’s best-known extreme sports athletes, joins us in Banff to share this seven-pitch, 150-metre, gut-wrenching climb in the World Premiere of his latest film Frozen Titans, produced and directed by Reel Water Productions in partnership with Red Bull Media House. American alpinist Steve Swenson joins Gadd on stage for an in-depth interview, followed by other films in competition.
