Welcome On behalf of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival team, welcome to Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for the 41st annual Festival.
You may have noticed that we’ve changed our look this year with a sharp new creative design, but the indomitable spirit of adventure remains the same thanks to loyal fans who return year after year. If it’s your first festival, welcome to the tribe! And to everyone, welcome to the best nine days of the year! One thing stands out in the 2016 program – an undeniable trend of strong, adventurous women who are at the fore. Lynn Hill and Catherine Destivelle are world-renowned personalities who, through their commitment to the mountain lifestyle, have achieved remarkable climbing feats spanning decades and often surpassing their male counterparts. But for a few exceptions, they are amongst only a handful of women who could really have been considered household names in the mountain world. ‘Where have the women been hiding all this time?’ you may ask. The truth is that women have long been adventurous souls; that’s not new. What is new, however, is that women’s voices are finally being heard and appreciated for the unique angle that they bring to the once male-dominated realm of mountain sports. With a new shift of
acceptance in the air, it is women who will be changing the genre of mountain storytelling for generations to come. They are getting behind the camera, and tapping out expedition reports on blogs and in books. They are providing mentorship to young girls around the globe, encouraging them to dive in and set new standards for what is possible. It’s thrilling to see these stories being told, and it’s equally inspiring that the gender gap in the industry is closing with every new accomplishment by athletes like Kate Harris, Ines Papert, and Sarah Marquis. This year’s festival also tackles big issues of ability, diversity, and conservation. Paul Pritchard tells his story of overcoming a life-threatening injury against all odds and returning to the place that changed his life forever, Tasmania’s Totem Pole. Indigenous voices shine through in films like KONELINE: Our Land Beautiful, Crossing Home, and Shift. Athletes are also making bold choices and speaking out about how their sports impact the landscapes they tread on. Jeremy Jones leads the way in conservation efforts to protect the wild winter terrain
he loves. Meanwhile, through a photographic lens, Florian Schulz captures the amazing wildlife of the north threatened by resource extraction and climate change. Kevin Van Tighem wants a world that includes humans living together respectfully, not pitted against one another for habitable land. So, although our goal is to entertain and inspire you for nine days through our robust schedule of films, authors, art exhibits, and speakers, please take a moment to pause and consider what it means to be alive in the 21st Century. We hope you’ll go home thinking about the richness of life and the joy that every mountain excursion brings – however big or small. It only takes #NineEpicDays to inspire a whole year of adventure; we hope you’ll embrace the challenge.

Catherine Destivelle – and Films The program begins with the presentation of the 2016 Banff Mountain Book Competition awards. Catherine Destivelle is one of the most celebrated alpinists of all time. She was climbing some of the highest peaks in the Alps by the age of 17. She was unbeatable at world cup competitions in the late 1980s, but was drawn towards the realm of mountaineering. She made solo winter ascents of the Eiger, the Grandes Jorasses and the Matterhorn, an 11-day solo first ascent of the West Face of Les Drus in Chamonix, plus cutting-edge ascents in Pakistan and the Himalaya. Sarah Marquis likes to go for long walks. From 2010 through 2013, she walked over 16,000 kilometres across Asia and then across Australia, scrounging for water in the desert to surviving dengue fever alone in the Laos jungle. The 2016 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year chronicles this epic journey in her book Wild by Nature.
Heart Waters Since retiring from his job as superintendent of Banff National Park in 2011, Kevin Van Tighem has been busy honing his writing skills, and is here to talk about his latest book, Heart Waters: Sources of the Bow River. He is known for his broad ecological vision and deep commitment to conservation. Van Tighem’s The Homeward Wolf won the Jon Whyte Award for Mountain Literature in the 2014 Banff Mountain Book Competition.

Everything disappears. Life is illusory and impermanent, and according to Buddhist beliefs, our lives’ activities are merely “housekeeping in a dream”. All things are empty of existence in themselves, and rather, interdependent, and interconnected with everything else. In Karen’s photographs, she seeks to capture a fleeting moment that is different from the moment before and the moment that follows. The images were shot in Canada, Bhutan, Tibet, and China, between 2012 and 2016.
This work is all about our relationships with some of the “Others”. Until relatively recently in human history we were amongst, not separate from, other species, several of which were credited with important roles in how life seems to roll along. Working as a wildlife field researcher in the Central Rockies enabled Colleen to learn about “others” in this place, species with major roles in many ancient stories that guide human culture.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Walter Phillips Gallery examined its history and dedicated its fortieth exhibition to a series of new and existing works by a group of contemporary artists. As a starting point, each artist was invited to create a new work that takes Walter J. Phillips’ unusual Flying Island (1923) print as an open-ended starting point. The floating untethered landmass he depicted hovers above a body of water with no visible horizon. Conjuring divergent connotations; artists were invited to respond directly or as a thematic starting point.

This is a collection of eight images showcasing women and girls from 17 countries who have received a bike from the 88bikes Foundation during the last ten years. Also on exhibit, in the trees in front of Lloyd Hall at Banff Centre, will be a collection of 5000 images of these heroic women posing with a picture of their donor and their new bike.
The North Face athletes Mike Wolfe and Mike Foote, along with photographer Steven Gnam, set out from their homes in Missoula, Montana and ran 600 miles along the spine of the Rockies to Banff, Alberta in the autumn of 2015. They wanted to explore their greater backyard, traveling light and fast–inspired by the animals that make their home here in the Crown of the Continent.

Yadav is also a National Geographic Young Explorer and his work, along with fellow Young Explorers Eva Rendle and Kyle Hemes, will be displayed at the Banff Canmore Community Foundation. As a global nonprofit organization, the National Geographic Society is committed to exploring and protecting the planet. Since 1888, National Geographic has given more than 12,000 grants to explorers, scientists, and storytellers who have a vision for improving our world. Today, a new generation of National Geographic Explorers is integral to carrying on the tradition, blazing new trails in thought and action. The Young Explorers featured in this exhibit have all received grants from the National Geographic Society to support their field projects.

Barbara Milne has made collages, drawings, and paintings in which she has pondered ideas around stewardship and asked the question of What Endures? What holds value, and why?
October 21 – November 20, 2016 Since moving to Alberta 60 years ago, Glen Boles completed 37 first ascents and 588 climbs. During this time, he also managed to amass a collection of over 40,000 negatives and photographs. His love of climbing and photography, combined with the drawing skills he gained as a draftsman, has led him to create exquisite pen and ink drawings. Artist in attendance.

Film Competition and International Jury The 2016 Banff Mountain Film Competition saw 326 films submitted from 35 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, which viewed all of the entries. From these, 96 finalists were selected. This year’s Festival features over 47 premieres. During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and determines the award winners. A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the finest quality. The awards are announced on Sunday evening, November 6, in the Eric Harvie Theatre. The winners will be announced online at banffmountainfestival.ca.

Doug Bailey works for the National Geographic Society where he is responsible for developing and creating impact media tied to the Society’s programs. Prior to joining National Geographic, Bailey worked at Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, and Science Channel where he oversaw the development of numerous series and contributed to many highlyrated shows.
Canadian-born filmmaker Ciaran Flannery has years of experience in the trenches of adventure story-telling and film-making. He has guided dozens of hours of cable and primetime network programming from concept to completion – pitch through post, for companies such as American Adventure Productions, Evergreen Films, JWM Productions and the BBC’s Human Planet, for broadcasters including National Geographic, Discovery, ABC, and Smithsonian. He recently relocated to Austria as a Senior Producer with Red Bull Media House.
Gabriela Kühn is vice director of the Mountain Film Meetings Festival in the Tatras Mountains of Zakopane, Poland and vice president of The International Alliance for Mountain Film. She graduated in foreign languages and comparative literature. She speaks English, Italian, French, Polish, and Russian. She followed courses about the history of the cinema and participated in documentary film workshops. Kühn holds E.MA’s degree in Human Rights and Democratization and manages children rights projects.

Victor Saunders grew up in Malaysia and Scotland and practiced architecture for 18 years in London before migrating to Chamonix as a mountain guide. He’s been on 84 expeditions. Saunders invested a lot of expedition time in the Karakoram and Himalaya, and recently calculated that he has now spent five years of his life in a tent. Some of these adventures have appeared in print. He has written four books including Elusive Summits: Four Expeditions in the Karakoram which won the Boardman Tasker prize.
Producer Elizabeth Yake’s films have been nominated for 17 Genie Awards (Canadian Oscar) and all of her features and shorts have premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Based on Salt Spring Island, BC her company True West Films focuses on structuring international and interprovincial co-productions for the world market including award-winning films and TV series. In 2015, she produced Hadwin’s Judgement. Yake regularly attends international markets looking for new film projects and creative partnerships.

Book Competition and International Jury The 23rd annual Banff Mountain Book Competition saw one of the largest number of entries ever submitted and was an exceptional year for quality work. Our diligent volunteer readers helped narrow down the long list of category finalists from 147 books in six categories, before the international jury went to work reading all 27 finalists from seven countries to determine the award winners.

Hilaree O’Neill was introduced to the world of big mountain skiing and climbing while living in Chamonix, France. Her mountain adventures led Outside Magazine to name O’Neill one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports. In 2005, she climbed the 8,000-metre peak Cho Oyu in Tibet and made the second female ski descent without oxygen. In 2012, she became the first women to climb consecutive 8,000-metre peaks in a single day. Between expeditions, O’Neill spends her time as a mother, adventuring with her two sons. Her writing has been published in National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic’s “The Call of Everest,” the Ski Journal, Outside Magazine Online, the Outdoor Journal, and several other publications.
Paul was a cuttingedge rock climber, mountaineer; adventuring in the Himalaya, Karakoram, Patagonia, Baffin Island, the Pamirs and the European Alps. He has published three books: two Boardman Tasker prize winners and one Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Prize winner.
Harry Vandervlist edited Jon Whyte: Mind Over Mountains, Selected and Collected Poems in 2000. He publishes magazine articles and scholarly writing on mountain literature, which he also teaches in the English Department at the University of Calgary. Over the past ten years, he has taught several mountain literature courses which bring university students to the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, and has often served as a panelist and moderator at Festival events. His reviews and essays have appeared in the Globe and Mail, Quill and Quire, Alberta Views, Avenue, and Swerve (where his mock expedition journal “The MacLeod Trail Expedition” won a Western Magazine Award).

During a 1998 world mountaineering trip Pritchard acquired a brain injury while climbing the Totem Pole in Tasmania resulted in hemiplegia and he lost the power of speech for many months. Since his accident, Paul has continued to lead a challenging life, climbing Kilimanjaro, lead rock climbing again, and 2011 he tri-cycled across Tibet to Everest Base Camp. He successfully climbed the Totem Pole again in April, 2016.

Summit of Excellence Award 2016 The Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival is proud to announce David P. Jones as the 2016 recipient of the Summit of Excellence Award. Few people know Canada’s western mountain ranges better than David P. Jones. For those who have hiked, skied, climbed or ascended a peak in Canada’s mountain west, there’s every chance it was because Jones was there first. “For more than half a century, Dave P. Jones has been one of the great spirits of our country’s mountains,” says Geoff Powter, a member of the Summit of Excellence committee. “He’s dreamt, mapped, flagged and cut numerous trails, giving the rest of us access to ranges that we’d likely otherwise never have entered.” David P. Jones is one of Canada’s most accomplished mountaineers. In an unparalleled record, Jones has made the first ascents of nearly 100 unclimbed peaks from the Coast Range to the Rockies to the great northern mountains of Kluane, many of them by notably hard routes, and he’s made more than 100 first ascents of new routes on previously ascended mountains. He’s been just as active a contributor to the world of rock climbing, pioneering some 250 sport routes across southern British Columbia (B.C.).
Jones’s commitment to exploration and discovery started young. Raised outside of Revelstoke B.C., Jones was surrounded by mountains, and itched to explore. “At twelve and half,” Jones says, “I really wanted to go to the Seattle World’s Fair, and I kept bugging my father. He got fed up and finally said, ‘Well, why don’t you goddamn walk?’” Jones took that as permission to go, and he and a friend rode threespeed bikes all the way from Revelstoke to Seattle, taking ten days to get there. That journey was prescient. Jones followed it with decades and decades of deep backcountry exploration with exactly the same flavour. Jones has made four ascents of Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan, twice by new routes. His first ascent of Logan’s massive and complex Warbler Ridge was a 27-day epic that remains unrepeated after 40 years. He also blazed Canadian trails in the Himalaya when while ascending Makalu, he became the first Canadian to climb above 8000-metres. During his prolific career Jones has matched his prodigious exploration with meticulous
cataloguing of peaks and their climbs. It is this commitment that naturally led to his role as an author of several climbing guidebooks, beginning with a series of guides to his beloved Selkirk Ranges, Selkirks North climbing guide, and now expanded to the mammoth job of updating the longout-of-print guides to the Rockies, in the new Rockies Central guide. The award will be presented at the Best of the Festival awards night on Sunday, November 6.
