That moment I realized...

...nature is my festival

Welcome to Sleeping Buffalo Mountain… On behalf of the Festival team, welcome to Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity beside Sleeping Buffalo Mountain on Treaty 7 Territory, for the 42nd annual Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. Every day in mainstream media we see news of changing landscapes. Changes to land policy, resource management, and human activity in the wild are some of the top headlines. We are asked frequently by friends, local politicians, or on social media to state our position on how we feel about sharing this planet with plants and animals and other outdoor enthusiasts. Books and films have always been an outlet for our voices, and this year, landscape is top of mind for many of our content providers. We welcome these voices as we’ve always done. It’s what makes us who we are. This year’s film program celebrates a variety of viewpoints when it comes to humans on the landscape. Local films like Living with Wildlife and Bison Return remind us that animals and humans can learn to live together and both can help each other in ways yet unexplored. Hunting Giants and The Hunt remind us that our resources are limited and that more often than not, vanity and greed can be characteristics of the landscape too. Films like Mountain and La Vallée

des Loups are sheer, visual feasts – celebrations of our planet and the peace we can find when we venture into high places. Climbers Greg Boswell and Nick Bullock will tell us their tale of a grizzly bear encounter and that perhaps, we still have much to learn. Conversely, researcher Doug Chadwick actively seeks out the rarest bears on earth, those that make the inhospitable Gobi Desert their home. For the first time this year the Festival will host two Indigenous Leaders’ Dialogues. Leaders from Canada, the United States, and New Zealand share traditional wisdom and stories about the power of place from a global perspective, how this could impact land use, and how recreationalists view the relationship to the land they are on. Banff Centre is also pleased to welcome artists from around the globe whose work reflects how landscapes and history can change us, hopefully for the better. Fleck Fellowship recipient Tessa Lyons will create work in situ with Sir Chris Bonington, Nico Favresse, and Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll as she explores their most memorable climbs for her project The Land That Shaped Us. Artist Sarah Uhl’s exhibit, Love Letters

to the Land, is both a beautiful and desperate plea to save national historic sites and public lands in the US, places that have long held significance to native populations. High altitude adventurers like Tamara Lunger and Mayan Smith-Gobat inspire us to be present when we venture out into the wild, and to hold these places in high regard – which can result in resigning ourselves to retreat as a form of respect for mountains larger than ourselves. One thing is clear, Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival fans are lovers of wild landscapes and we can’t imagine ourselves without it. We hope this year’s Festival takes you to a new place – one full of joy, peace, and respect. A place where you can find solace in nothing but your surroundings, where you can push your limits, but realize limitations. A place where you can find your voice, too.

Kevin Vallely

World-class alpinist and author Steve Swenson shares tales from highaltitude expeditions set against the backdrop of harsh conflict between China, India, and Pakistan for control of Kashmir in his latest work, Karakoram: Climbing Through the Kashmir Conflict. With nearly 50 years of climbing experience, Swenson has made ascents of K2 and Everest without supplemental oxygen. In this gripping first-hand account, explorer and author Kevin Vallely achieves one of the last “firsts” remaining in the world of polar exploration. The indomitable David Roberts is one of the most well-known climbing authors and American alpinists of his generation. With hundreds of magazine articles and over 28 books to his name, his work has appeared on many award shortlists and is considered must-read climbing literature. Nico, Sean, The Coconut Connection – and Films

Tamara Lunger – and Films

Sponsored by MEC Nico Favresse and Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll have been in a few tight spots together over the years while climbing and making first ascents around the world. But they always seem to push the harsh realities of life on the big wall aside with the help of a few musical interludes and the occasional bout of nonsensical behavior. They recently had some laughs on The Coconut Connection (5.12d), a challenging big wall route on Baffin Island. Festival audiences may remember their antics from the popular 2016 Festival film Dodo’s Delight. They will join us on stage for a handful of great stories and if we’re lucky, a special musical performance with a friend or two. 9:10 P.M. (BREAK, 20 MIN)

Blood Road follows the journey of ultra endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch* and her Vietnamese riding partner, Huyen Nguyen, as they pedal 1900 arduous kilometres along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail through the dense jungles of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Their goal: to reach the newly discovered crash site and final resting place of Rebecca’s father, a U.S. Air Force pilot shot down over Laos some 40 years earlier.

Apa Sherpa* has climbed Mount Everest 21 times, but he wouldn't wish this upon anybody. Having grown up in the remote Khumbu region of Nepal, Apa was forced to leave school and work as a porter at the age of 12. For Nepal’s rural people, the income earned as a high altitude porter conflicts with the dreams made possible only through education and knowledge.

Indigenous Leaders’ Dialogue In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and our commitment to creating dialogue, this year, one of the questions the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival is exploring is how can Indigenous wisdom inspire our group of advocates to become allies in shaping a new conversation of land use. In response to this call, we have designed a two-day Indigenous Leaders' Dialogue to explore how Indigenous wisdom can frame land management and the human impacts to land. We invite you to share with us in this new type of conversation, one that we acknowledge has existed for many generations before us.

Global Wisdom in Land Management

Local Wisdom in Land Management

Saturday, November 4 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. | KCCI 101

Sunday, November 5 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. | KCCI 101

Indigenous leaders from Canada and New Zealand will provide examples of Indigenous sources of law and how this inherent wisdom and world view impacts connections to land. This conversation will explore from an Indigenous perspective, thoughts and ideas on the power of place and offer recreationalists the opportunity to review and reconsider their own relationship to the land.

This second day of dialogue will explore current legislation and policies of the parks we work and live within and invite us to consider how we might be able to change current government practices through the inclusion of Indigenous culture, place names, language, and stories of traditional land use. Indigenous knowledge carriers from Banff and Kluane National Parks, Grand Canyon National Trust, as well as from BC and New Zealand will discuss current policy frameworks and Indigenous wise practices

Participants: Harmony Redsky (CAN) (moderator), Carwyn Jones (NZ), Leroy Little Bear (CAN), Melanie Goodchild (CAN), Lawrence Joe (CAN), Lindsay Borrows (CAN)

Mountain Exhibitions AT BANFF CENTRE

The Last Honey Hunter Renan Ozturk (USA) Laszlo Funtek Building, Exterior, Theatre Complex Professional Development Centre Lobby October 20 – November 10 Mauli Dhan Rai leads the perilous harvests of a rare, hallucinogenic honey from hives hanging high up on the faces of remote cliffs. Despite the importance of this tradition, nobody else in Mauli’s village is following his footsteps, and the honey harvest may soon disappear. This project was supported by a National Geographic Society Expeditions Council grant, the dZi Foundation, and a Mountainfilm Commitment grant. Renan Ozturk is a climber, artist, photographer and filmmaker known for his dauntless spirit and visual storytelling. He collaborated with director/filmmaker/ editor Ben Knight from Felt Soul Media on The Last Honey Hunter Film. Prints for sale support the Dzi Foundation.

Love Letters to the Land

Banff Mountain Photo Essay Competition

The Land that Shaped Us

Sarah Uhl (USA)

Grand Prize: Guassa Geladas Jeff Kerby (USA)

Tessa Lyons (UK)

Max Bell Building Lobby October 26 – November 6 This collection of work is a glimpse into Uhl’s deepening courtship with the land. Like in any relationship, our love is wild and raw. The more time spent alone in conversation with the land, the more she tells us. Sarah is bringing the voice of the land to the table so it may not just be remembered for its beauty.

Garden Gossip Maryse Larivière and Tiziana La Melia (CAN) Walter Phillips Gallery September 29 – December 22 Developed during a residency in Visual and Digital Arts, Garden Gossip brings together feminist and ecological concerns articulated through tableaus, film, painting, sculpture, and rot. New commissions by Vancouver-based artist Tiziana La Melia and Montrealbased artist Maryse Larivière.

The Project Space, Glyde Hall October 27 – November 6 Geladas are the last grasseating monkeys. Isolated in mountains of Ethiopia, these bleeding-heart monkeys have a bizarre diet, social system, and morphology that are reflections of their alpine habitat. This ecosystem braces the Great Rift Valley and brims with uniquely adapted plants and animals, yet it is rapidly disappearing.

Special Jury Mention: Iceland Steve Shannon (CAN) The Project Space, Glyde Hall October 27 – November 6 Skiing in Iceland is both an incredible experience and one of incredible frustration. The rewards far outweigh the days spent waiting on the weather and suffering long approaches. These photographs were taken during a month of exploring the incredible island on skis.

Leighton Artist Studio October 28 – November 6 Open Studios: Sat. Nov. 4 and Sun. Nov. 5 Meeting Place: Eric Harvie Theatre Patio, 10:45 a.m. for short 2-minute walk to the artist’s studio. Exploring how having adventures changes our relationship to the landscape: from being a spectator standing in awe of the land to a participant with an intimate connection to it. Lyons will be taking three recognizable athletes and questioning them on their experiences, honing in on the places that they believe have helped shape them as people. Life-sized portraits will be created that touch upon elements of their chosen landscape and details of their individual discipline.

Mountain Artwalk Saturday, October 28 4 P.M. | FREE | Meeting Place: Eric Harvie Theatre Patio

Explore mountain art and photography exhibits on Banff Centre campus, wrapping up with a reception at Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Building Foyer.

IN DOWNTOWN BANFF:

Under a Clear Sky Steven Nederveen Canada House Gallery 201 Bear Street Banff October 27 – November 5 Building on Nederveen’s fascination with nature and memory, Canada House Gallery is proud to present a new collection of mixed media paintings. Inspired by his travels to the Rockies and Iceland, Nederveen photographs places that feel alive to him. He then reimagines that world through a combination of digital and painterly processes. By blurring the lines between photography and painting, Nederveen has developed a magical realism that he hopes inspires others to see the world with enchanted eyes.

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies 111 Bear Street

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies

October 21 – January 28, 2018

111 Bear Street

The Bow Biennial, features a diverse and talented group of local artists whose art form, once considered subversive, is now on the fringe of mainstream society. The exhibition includes skateboard designs, tattoo art, and three-dimensional chainmail constructions. There is an unconventional, spiritual and rebellious appeal to the exhibition with each work infused with imagination, metaphor, and wonder. Throughout, urban symbolism and historic connotations weave a narration of fantasy, mythology, and realism.

October 21 – January 28, 2018 In 1992, the year Canada turned 125 years old, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies hosted an exhibition by Bob Sandford of photographs and local perspectives on the themes of business, community and progress in Banff. Perhaps even more relevant than it was twenty-five years ago, this exhibition is a haunting reminder of the importance of protecting the qualities of place and experience that are at the heart of a vibrant and enduring community.

Permanent Installation The Carter-Ryan Gallery and Live Art Venue is currently celebrating the works of Jason Carter, acclaimed Aboriginal soapstone sculptor and painter. ‘Bold’ and ‘brilliant’ are two words that have often been used to describe this prolific visual artist.

Mountain Mystery – The Prime Elements Paintings by Peter Deacon RCA Willock & Sax Gallery, 210 Bear Street October 22 – November 5 The challenge to find pattern behind enigmatic prime numbers and colours or to delight in their unpredictability are guiding principles for Peter Deacon. With the mountains of the Continental Divide as his guide, he interchanges components referencing geographic locations, personal experiences, as well as his ‘irreducible’ prime elements.

Film Competition and International Jury The 2017 Banff Mountain Film Competition received 384 films submitted from 36 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, which viewed all of the entries. From these, 82 finalists were selected. This year’s Festival features over 50 premieres, including 19 world premieres. During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and determines the award winners. A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the finest quality. The awards are announced on Sunday evening, November 5, in the Eric Harvie Theatre. The winners will be announced online at banffmountainfestival.ca.

Gilles Chappaz (France)

Paul Diffley (Scotland)

Katie Moore (France)

With his diplomas in Political Science and ski instruction tucked away in his back pocket, Gilles Chappaz of Chamonix, France turned to journalism. After participating in the founding of Montagnes Magazine and Vertical, he took the reins at Ski Français and collaborated with written press publications (Le Monde, Libération) and television media (France Télévisions, TF1). After a few years as Associate Editor of l’Équipe Magazine he devoted himself to writing books about skiing and the mountains, and creating documentaries including Sur le fil des 4000 – the Grand Prize winner at the 2005 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.

Paul Diffley is a climber and adventure filmmaker based in Edinburgh, Scotland. As well as creating his own films under the Hot Aches Productions label, Diffley works freelance as a cameraman and director for the broadcast industry. His films have focused mostly on rock climbing and mountaineering and have featured in the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival almost every year since his first film played here in 2004. After attending the Adventure Filmmakers Workshop at the Banff Centre in 2005, Paul quit his previous career in IT to focus full-time on his passion for mountain film. Since then, he has filmed some of the world’s best athletes and produced many award-winning mountain films.

Katie Moore is based in Chamonix, France. Hailing originally from Slough, England, she spent several winters as a ski instructor in the Alps, which led to exploring other mountain activities and fueled a passion for adventure sports. A paragliding trip to South America led to working for several years as an adventure travel guide throughout Latin America. She has since travelled around the globe, including expeditions to ski Cho Oyu, Tibet (8201 metres), to canoe across the South American Watershed on the Rio Parapeti, Bolivia, and to paraglide in the Sayan Mountains in northern Mongolia. She is now working as a producer with adventure filmmaker Sébastien MontazRosset and hosts the Chamonix Adventure Festival.

Special thanks to Ticino Swiss-Italian Restaurant for their support of the Film Jury.

Mayan Smith-Gobat (NZ)

David Stevenson (USA)

Ian Welsted (CAN)

Mayan Smith-Gobat grew up in the New Zealand mountains, alpine climbing from the age 16. Since 2001, she has dedicated herself to climbing, both in competition climbing and outdoors becoming one of New Zealand's best climbers, and the first Kiwi woman to climb 5.14b/8c. Smith-Gobat became the second woman to free climb the Salathé Wall, 5.13b/8a+ (1000m) in Yosemite, and lowered the female speed record on the Nose (1000m) to 4.43 hours, also achieving a mixed gender record of 3.29 hours. She now also shares her adventures through writing and multi-media presentations inspiring others to push their boundaries and step out of their own comfort zones.

David Stevenson has written two mountaineering books – most recently an essay collection, Warnings Against Myself: Meditations on a Life in Climbing, and the short story collection, Letters from Chamonix, winner of the 2014 Banff Mountain Book Competition Award for Mountain Fiction and Poetry. He has worked as the book review editor of The American Alpine Journal since 1995. In 2017 he was awarded the H. Adams Carter Literary Award by the American Alpine Club. He is a professor of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he directs the MFA program in creative writing., A climber since the early 1970's, he remains active in the Church, Talkeetnas, and the Alaska Range.

For two decades, Ian Welsted was obsessed with alpine climbing. After an apprenticeship in the Canadian Rockies, he progressed to establishing first ascents, then expeditions to Alaska, Patagonia, Pakistan, and Nepal. At first convinced the pursuit was an intensely personal endeavor, he was rewarded with indelible friendships and experiences. Receiving the 2014 Piolets d'Or prompted Welsted to reassess his view of the sport. In this new phase he is sharing his love of the mountain world through writing and guiding.

Summit of Excellence Award 2017 Born in Victoria and raised in Kamloops, Serl discovered a love for the mountains at the age of 25. while working as a chemist in Vancouver.

The Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival is proud to announce Don Serl as the 2017 recipient of the Summit of Excellence Award, which recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to mountain life in Canada. Regarded as one of Canada’s most accomplished and prolific mountaineers, Serl has about 200 first ascents to his name.

“With the Summit of Excellence Award now being presented to deserving recipients outside of the Canadian Rockies, Don Serl was an obvious and easy choice,” said Nancy Hansen, Summit of Excellence selection committee member. “Over several decades, Don has made significant contributions to Canadian mountain climbing and culture and is humble about his achievements, preferring to discuss new ideas and what others have done. He is a wealth of information about climbing on the West Coast and enjoys sharing his knowledge.”

In 1974, Serl trained in the Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) basic mountaineering course where he said his “energies and imagination were unleashed” and by 1975 he completed his initial first ascent on the north face of Mt Cheam in British Columbia. Since then “he has reigned as the preeminent Coast climber” according to author and climbing peer Chic Scott. Heavily influenced by Canadian climber Dick Culbert, Serl’s horizons opened after an Alpine Club of Canada trip into the multi-summitted Waddington Range, followed by numerous expeditionary trips into remote corners of the Coast Mountains in British Columbia. From the late 1970s to mid 1980s, Serl was lured to the big peaks of Nepal, Peru, Alaska, and the Yukon. After the birth of his children in the late 1980s, he decided to focus his attentions on the Coast Mountains and his “spiritual home” in the Waddington Range. During this time, Serl completed first ascents of Mt Tiedemann south face, Mt Hickson north face, Razorback Mountain north face, Mount Queen Bess southeast buttress, Bute Mountain west face, and Monarch Mountain north ridge, as well as participating in the first traverse of the Waddington range. He developed a love for waterfall ice climbing and began establishing new routes, a discipline he continued for over 30 years. Serl started documenting his exploits and co-authored two guidebooks: The Waddington Guide (2003) and

West Coast Ice (1993, 2005), as well as publishing a plethora of articles in the Canadian Alpine Journal and American Alpine Journal.

"I am honoured to be chosen as the recipient of this year’s Summit of Excellence Award,” said Don Serl. “Over nearly four decades of chasing summits, I experienced many beautiful, challenging, and alluring ridges, faces, and couloirs, mostly in remote and obscure places. These wonderful features, and the strong, competent partners with whom I adventured, also share the honour, as do my wife and family, without whose tolerance little of this would have happened.” The award will be presented at the opening night of this year’s Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival on Saturday, October 28.

Presented by the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival since 1987, the annual Summit of Excellence Award is presented in memory of Calgary climber Bill March, an internationally respected mountaineer, author, and educator, who led Canada’s first successful Everest climb in 1982. Recent award recipients include David P. Jones (2016), Pierre Lemire (2015), Urs Kallen (2014), Ben Gadd (2013), Geoff Powter (2012), and Philippe Delesalle (2011). Dr. John McCall

People Behind the Scenes The Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival is truly a team effort. Thank you to Banff Centre President and CEO Janice Price and the Board of Governors. Thank you to all staff across Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity who help us create the largest and most prestigious festival of its kind in the world. We wish to express our gratitude to John Amatt, founding director of the Festival in 1976, and to Bernadette McDonald, whose visionary leadership took the Festival to the world stage. Plus we would like to thank the dozens of individuals and organizations who have provided their time, expertise, services, and products to

make our Festival one of the most significant events of the year for the mountaineering community in North America. We would also like to thank the more than 120 volunteers who have who have come from far and wide, including Australia, Lithuania, France, the United Kingdom, eight different U.S. states – and of course our local volunteers from the Bow Valley. A very special thanks to everyone behind the scenes, without whose time, effort, and dedication, there would be no Festival.
