THE BARKING CAT

“A magazine for pets and their people.” a letter from the publisher

We celebrated our very first media sponsorships with 12 K’s of Christmas, WoofStock, and The Phoenix Pet Expo, among others. Rain or shine we came out to many wonderful local events to set a Barking Cat presence in the valley. I’ve been able to work with some amazing local businesses in the valley, attending some amazing Yappy Hours like that of Spikes Treats in Fountain Hills. How can I call it work when I get to do what I love, spending time with pets & their people? Meeting new pet parents, answering questions, and listening to what people want out of a pet magazine has been time well spent.

I couldn’t have asked for more amazing, loyal readers than you. One of my favorite events was our First Annual Dog-Crawl, February 2014, a time for pet parents to have a night out with their own pack while donating a portion of purchased tickets to local rescue organizations. What more can you ask for than to meet with good people while pubcrawling for a worthy cause? Our circulation has grown like wildfire, doubling and even tripling in busy event months. I couldn’t have asked for more amazing, loyal readers than you. It’s because of you that we are able to share local information, resources, tips, tricks, training, vetting, services, adoptable rescue pets, and products throughout the valley. I wanted to take a moment and thank you for supporting The Barking Cat; we are looking forward to a wonderful Second Volume Starting this month throughout October 2015. Stick with us. As they say, “You Aint Seen Nothing Yet.”

hat an amazing and wild first year of The Barking Cat we’ve had. As the new kid on the block and the only publication for pets in the Valley, we faced some challenges, but we learned a lot along the way. I’ve been truly blessed doing what I love—working with rescued animals and the local Arizona Rescues who helped to save them. I’m not going to lie, it was a very long year with many hours dedicated to events, articles, research, and final touches on each issue to make them better and more enjoyable each month. Although the road was a long one, it was packed with so many wonderful memories and new experiences.

One on One Cultivating Positive Interactions

between Dogs By Greg Winters, Owner of Personal Dog Training, Inc.

E

ffectively socializing a dog that has issues interacting with other dogs is a process that requires structure, repetition and the right partners (dog/human). If a dog gets over excited when it sees another dog, or wants to lunge, growl, or has issues when it actually gets to interact with them it is important to remember that touching is not the first step toward helping it learn how to interact well. Structuring positive interactions that help teach dogs the behavior we want is key. If your dog makes other dogs defensive you will need to recognized that and correct in real time. Excitement, lack of social experience, inability to read and pushing energy/contact can elicit defensive responses from other dogs and are the main reasons dogs can begin a path toward true aggressive behavior. Below are the steps to help structure interactions so you can begin to change the way your dog relates to other dogs. Look for good walking/interaction partners in your neighborhood so you can get in plenty of practice, teaching and repetition.

STEP ONE:

Being and having the right partner(s) is key. If you and your potential interaction partner can’t both manage your dogs and get them to stay calmly at you side there is no need to move to the next step. There is no need to touch right away and especially until both dogs can be near each other in a relaxed state of mind. Take whatever time is needed to elicit the relaxation required. When dogs approach you during your walk it is OK to ask their owner to help you by not letting the dogs touch. Let them know you are training your dog and need their help. Even if they can never get their dog to relax it is still good practice for you. Remember you can’t control other people’s dogs but are expected to control and influence yours. You can start this process at a good distance and approach with a series of stops to check and see if your dog is still in charge/ react mode.

Step Two:

The next step is working/walking together. This allows the dogs to experience each other in a new way and start bonding. Make sure you and your partner walk in one line across and that your partner

www.thebarkingcataz.com

is able to provide a controlled walk so the dogs can see you are all working together with the direction of us humans. At first keep the dogs on the outside until they start to conform to the walk. If you or your partner can not get the dogs to walk at your sides without trying to get to each other there is no need to move on to the next step or have them attempt to sniff each other. Once you are having a nice relaxed group walk you can do a walk sniff to help add some low level interaction that uses the dog’s natural sense of smell. Have one dog follow behind and allow them to sniff the dog walking in front. Make sure the dog sniffing has no tension on the leash when engaging their nose and showing curiosity. They are not allowed to get past the hips of the dog in front and the dog in front is not allowed to turn around. Switch positions and then go back to normal walking after both dogs have had a chance to sniff each other. Next try walking the dogs side by side with the humans on the outside as you maintain the control of the walk and lack of direct contact. If you are successful the dogs are starting to truly bond, be at ease and read each other.

give and take this can lead to things intensifying and someone throwing a punch. In this case both owners need to correct and see if they can bring the intensity down. Also be aware if one dog is too intense or physical (basketball vs football player) for the other and help it read the situation and adjust down by providing timely corrections. Integrate stops and breaks and end the session with some more walking if they do not totally relax around each other. Even the most physical player’s end up just sitting around with each other and relaxing a good portion of the time. Only after you and your partner have done these steps and interacted on-leash at least a couple of times can you allow them to socialize off-leash supervised. When they do socialize make sure to keep toys and food out of the mix since this can cause other issues not covered here.

Step Three:

Once you and your partner are successful in completing steps one and two you are ready for some controlled touching on leash. This in some ways is the hardest part since it requires both owners to read both dogs and understand their interaction styles and cues. Is your dog a reader, basketball player or tackle football player? Remember a good interaction is a two way street and a football player should not just tackle a reader. When you allow the dogs to interact keep the leashes on and be careful to work together so you do not get crossed up. Provide short interactions with no tension on the leashes when the dogs are free to socialize. This will allow you read, correct and/ or break off as needed. When you break off contact simply turn and move away without hesitation. If one dog is avoiding contact or turning away make sure to back them up with a correction if the second dog is not reading their cues so the first dog does not need to become defensive. Allow for a continuation after the correction to see if the second dog is getting the message to not push its energy onto the first. If they get physical look for a natural back and forth as well as stops and starts. If they are just clashing with no

Creative Grooming Story and Photography by Kelli McCoy

O

kay, I will admit it. When I first saw a picture of a poodle all trussed up and dyed 10 different colors I immediately thought to myself… Why? But after a while it started to grow on me. I started small; my Cocker Spaniel/Bichon Frise mix was going to come to a dog event with me, so I wanted her to stand out a little. Luckily I have a friend in the business! She said, “No problem!” I watched as little Sophie with her plain white coat was transformed into a pink and purple polka-dotted masterpiece within a matter of minutes. At the event Sophie got a tremendous amount of attention. Everyone wanted to say hi and pet her, which Sophie didn’t mind one bit! She soaked up all of the fawning over her creative grooming designs.

Yes, I am one of those people who likes to dress up her dog—I freely admit this! There are a lot of us too! No harm, no foul. The only problem is that Sophie pouts in the corner when I dress her up, so this is a nice alternative for her. She doesn’t feel anything different like she does when she is wearing the clothes, but gets tons of positive attention—with, of course, the added bonus of being groomed more often as the colors fade. These dyes are formulated specifically for dogs and are non-toxic so you don’t have to worry about little Fluffy getting sick. You can also choose between semi-permanent and the temporary type that can be washed out in one bath,

whatever is your pleasure! Now, all of my pups get a little something extra when they go to the groomer. Pretty much anything you can dream up can be done. Stencils help add that pretty bow and a splash of color and often times glitter for the girls, while a mohawk and a skull and crossbones is readily available for our boy fur-kids. Most of the color is applied using dye pens that the groomer simply blows into to transfer color onto your pup’s coat, although some have full on airbrush machines. There is even a national association for creative groomers and competitions held for groomers who specialize in doggy art. This industry is booming! Lindsey Thomas, from The Pet Club Grooming Arrowhead and Avondale, is a local creative groomer. I asked her what her favorite part about creative grooming was. Of course she said the ability to combine two of her favorite things: art and dogs. Since Halloween is near we decided to have a little fun with my little ones! Some are more festive than others, but all of them look awesome and are ready for the upcoming holiday! Whether your cup of tea is a little feathering at the tail with some festive purple and orange, an awesome freehand sugar skull or pumpkin, or a full-on skeleton costume and mohawk, you can find something fun and new to spice up your dog’s next trip to the groomer.
