nation Director of Peace Corps mourned R. Sargent Shriver, the exuberant public servant and Kennedy in-law whose career included directing the Peace Corps, fighting the War on Poverty, functioning as ambassador to France and, less successfully, running for office, died Tuesday. He was 95. Shriver, who announced in 2003 that he had Alzheimer’s disease, had been hospitalized for several days. The family said he died surrounded by those he loved. Campus scavanger hunt Texas A&M University is teaming up with The Collegiate Licensing Company to launch a campus-wide social media scavenger hunt using smart phones. The scavenger hunt, scheduled for Jan. 25-26, is designed to encourage students to explore their 5,200acre campus. Using integrated social media, Texas A&M will use Facebook, Twitter and the location-based service Foursquare to promote the hunt, distribute clues and reward winners, explained Diane C. McDonald, the university’s director of social media and marketing programs. To win, the students must check in to the predetermined campus venues on Foursquare during the given time slot. Prizes will be awarded. Students can play by following Texas A&M on Twitter and Foursquare and must present a valid student ID at the destinations. The university will promote the hunt on its Facebook page. Foursquare users can follow Texas A&M’s profile (http:// foursquare.com/ tamutalk). Texas A&M Newswire

New framework for A&M Distinguished professors lead recruitment of faculty Haley Lawson The Battalion Texas A&M University has a growing academic reputation and is known throughout the country for its many traditions and its academics. A&M is planning to build on that reputation by increasing its faculty recruitment through a new framework, Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study, also known as TIAS. TIAS is hoped to “attract pre-eminent scholars from throughout the nation and abroad for appointments of at least a year during which they will engage Texas A&M faculty and students in ways intended to enhance the University’s teaching and scholarly endeavors by means not otherwise feasible,” said Lane Stephenson, director of news & information services. The TIAS will be a valuable resource for Texas A&M in regards to recruitment and its overall academic reputation. The TIAS Fellows will assist our Aggie community in many areas including mentoring students and faculty and conducting research. “TIAS will serve as a valuable venue for attracting some oof the best faculty-researchers See Faculty on page 9

The Battalion Head Coach Gary Blair is a man reputed for not mincing words; that hasn’t changed. Yet as the Aggies welcome archrival Texas to Reed Arena tonight, it’s implicitly known that the times have. “We are not overlooking Texas,” he said dryly. “That’s our rival. We may not be their rival, but they’re our rival.” Blair’s seeming reference to the school-in-Austin’s usual insistence that it takes Oklahoma far more seriously than A&M said nothing of the fact that since his arrival as the coach in Aggieland, the Longhorns are 5-9 against the Aggies in the regular season alone. The past season, A&M swept Texas for the fourth straight year. It’s a far cry from the bygone era before Blair. “I took the job and I saw that they were about 116-12 against us,” he said. “That’s about what it was, I don’t know

Acie Law, the 2007 Cousy Award winner, dueled with 2007 National Player of the Year Kevin Durant for nearly three hours in a time-ceasing night in Austin four years ago. The two monoliths weren’t long for the collegiate ranks; the next season, both would be in the NBA. Now, the spread of one of the NCAA’s best rivalries from the football field to the hardwood? That didn’t leave with them. The recent history of Texas and Texas A&M in the Frank Erwin Center would indicate that the eyes of all college basketball fans should be on Austin tonight. “There’s a lot of respect between both programs,” senior forward Nathan Walkup said.
Senior forward Danielle Adams and the Aggies look to continue their run of success against Texas. the exact number. We’ve won 10 of 11 and the last eight. We weren’t their rival when this streak started.” He didn’t finish the thought, because the divide has never been more apparent. Texas will enter Reed with statistically one of its worst teams since 20052006, when it finished 13-15. The final record might not be so drastic when the current season See Home stand on page 8
Junior guard Dash Harris and No. 10 A&M hopes to end a nine-game losing streak in Austin. “Both [teams] have a lot of Texas kids, it should be a lot of fun. It’s a good matchup every time we play. They haven’t won [in College Station], and we haven’t won there. Hopefully that can change.” The Aggies have only beaten the Longhorns on the road once since Texas Head Coach Rick Barnes took the job, but that depicts a much more lop-
The Battalion Every student wants to have the perfect schedule, the most efficient commute to and between classes and perhaps most of all, the cheapest and best way to pay for textbooks every semester. Saving money and receiving quality materials has been a dilemma that students have tried to fix since seeing that first textbook bill. Receiving a textbook bill ranging anywhere from $400$800 is not the ideal situation for students. To help cut the cost of textbooks, the Texas A&M MSC Bookstore has expanded its options from not only buying new or used textbooks, which can still be a little pricey, to include rentals and digital copies of books at almost half the normal price available to students. “[Book purchasing] is no longer ‘here’s your only option,’ now students get to choose the way in which they want to learn,” said Holley Scott, store manager of the Texas A&M Bookstore. “We’ve added choices. They can choose to buy or rent new, used or digital copies of their books, whichever they feel is best for them.” The MSC Bookstore is not the only option available to stu-

feel somewhat overproduced; California punk was born as a raw, aggressive sound that thrived on buzzing distortion, perfect for the small clubs in Southern California, where it was introduced to the world. Social Distortion opts in this album to have a very slick sound that sounds much more conventional. It would be nice to see a return to the roots of the genre that Social Distortion was so instrumental in developing. Ness, whose self-destructive lifestyle in his earlier years nearly destroyed the band, addresses his past demons in a number of the songs and opens lyrically in the album. He confronts past addictions and assesses the state of his life. Throughout, he maintains a strong, positive stance exuding self-assurance, both musically and personally. “I’ll be here to the bitter end, with a guitar in my hand,” Ness sings in the aptly named closing track, “Still Alive.” Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes is overall a very entertaining record that will probably prove to be one the band’s most memorable releases to date; every song is strong and adds its own element to the album.

The last time Texas A&M sniffed the top-10, Head Coach Mark Turgeon was navigating his first season in Aggieland’s waters. Now in his fourth, he has brought it back to rarified air by building upon the foundation he’s laid. Awaiting Turgeon’s team tonight is a familiar foe, familiar itself with such accolades. No. 10 A&M locks glares with No. 11 Texas at 8 p.m. in Austin with the winner set to take its place as the clearest challenger to Kansas in the Big 12. Many eyes have been on the Aggies (16-1, 3-0 Big 12) since sophomore forward Khris Middleton entered stage right on the platform of national consciousness with his overtime heroics against then-No. 12 Missouri, Saturday. Middleton began the extra period with 17 points and finished with 28, scoring 11 of A&M’s 13 total overtime points. Combined with his similar performance in a 31-point effort against Arkansas — also an overtime victory — and team-leading 15.8 points-per-game average, the reluctant Middleton has been anointed the next rising star for the Aggies. “We put him in his place, senior forward Nate Walkup said of Middleton. “We’re a real unselfish bunch. Coaches preach that every day. No matter how many points Khris scores, you know he’s not a selfish player. Sharing the wealth has been a staple of Aggie basketball all season. Walkup averages 10.8 points per game and, despite A&M ranking second nationally in re-
Tonight at Reed Arena, Texas A&M’s No. 5 women’s basketball team will play against arch-rival Texas in the first edition of the 2010-2011 Lone Star Showdown. A&M (15-1, 3-0) comes in as a heavy favorite after beating the rival Longhorns eight straight times and taking 10 of the last 11. Although Texas has struggled mightily against the Aggies in recent years, A&M Head Coach Gary Blair can remember when the tables were reversed. “We were not their rival when this winning streak started as much as it was for the fans, Blair said. “Their rival was Oklahoma and Baylor who were a little bit above us. I love playing Texas. If you’re an Aggie, you’re supposed to love playing Texas. You compete, that’s what it’s all about. Texas (11-6, 0-3) sits at the bottom of the Big 12 standings after opening conference-play with losses to Missouri, No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 1 Baylor. Despite the Longhorns’ early struggles, Blair believes they are still a dangerous opponent but is not worried about his team looking past them. “We’re not overlooking Texas, that’s our rival, Blair said. “It will be another great game and an up-tempo game. Texas is still a good ball club. They’ve played the top of the league and their next five games are very winnable. Blair also points to the difference in non-conference opponents between his Aggies and

Texas (14-3, 2-0) features a mixture of talent and balance that was lacking the past year when the team rose to a No. 1 ranking only to plummet to a first-round NCAA Tournament exit and no final ranking. Sophomore Jordan Hamilton averages 19.2 points per game for the Longhorns. “He can really score the ball, as far as what he’s done this year, Turgeon said. “Last year he was a

To a man, the Aggies described their ranking as impressive but just a mere number that the team will try to avoid falling for. Turgeon and the players stressed preparing and carrying themselves similar to the previous 17 games. “The only thing that’s harder than climbing to the top, said junior point guard Dash Harris, “is remaining there.

I have a veteran team that can play these teams in nationally televised games. Presenting the Aggie defense with a tough challenge will be Texas freshman guard Chassidy Fussell. Averaging a team-high 16.6 points per game, Fussell has led the Longhorns to the top scoring offense in the Big 12 this season. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

comes to a close, but the Longhorns sit at 11-6 and began Big 12 conference play with three straight losses, including an 85-80 setback against the Missouri team that A&M beat 85-40. Meanwhile, the Aggies under Blair continue their rise. No. 5 A&M has held its top-five spot in the Coaches’ Poll for five weeks, with its only loss coming on the road to current-No. 3 Duke by three points. It currently sits atop the conference standings with a 3-0 record, tying with No. 1 Baylor, No. 13 Oklahoma and Texas Tech. In 2009-2010, No. 10 A&M headed west to Austin to take No. 20 Texas down by a 91-70 score. Five players scored in double-figures, led by then-senior Tanisha Smith’s 28, and the Aggies held a 44-19 halftime advantage. In College Station almost two months later, the Aggies again prevailed 58-44 behind 14 points from then-sophomore point guard Sydney Carter. Though the newest installment seems more lopsided than those before it, intrigue presents itself on a more personal level. The current seniors will be playing for an undefeated career record against the Longhorns, whether in Austin or College Station. It also isn’t apparent how much longer Texas Head Coach Gail Goestenkors can tread in middling waters and receive slack from the athletic department. Blair’s team will be attempting the next step in what could become its best season in a string of elite seasons. Women’s basketball is the one sport in recent memory, where the interaction of Texas and A&M athletics is concerned, in which it is the Longhorns who are searching desperately for some sort of breakthrough against the other. Blair took that fact seriously, imploring fans to be at the game before watching the men play later in the night. “I love playing Texas,” he said. “If you’re an Aggie, you’re supposed to love playing Texas.” Based on the results, his players take the message to heart.
sided series than the nature of the conflicts reveal. In 2002, A&M alltime leading scorer Bernard King hung 30 points on Texas in an 80-74 Aggie upset victory. From that point, Texas is 8-0 in games against the Aggies in Austin, but few of them after 2005 have come without a prolonged and memorable fight. Aggie great Joseph Jones played one of the best games of his career in the 2006 meeting, scoring 31 points in an eventual 83-70 defeat. The Aggies trailed No. 7 Texas by 18 with 12 minutes left but embarked on a 22-10 run fueled by Jones and a sparkplug junior guard named Acie Law. Later that year, Law beat the Longhorns with what Aggies call “The Shot.” In the 2007 game, Law’s fallingto-the-side 3-pointer over two Texas defenders sent it into overtime after A&M had trailed by four with 20 seconds left. The Longhorns nearly pulled away several times in the extra period but couldn’t escape Law, who scored a fast-break layup off a steal and, with 23.6 seconds left, hit a three that took the game to a second overtime. Law took 11 free throws and missed only one — an intentional miss with a few precious seconds remaining that gave the Aggies a final chance at a game-tying layup. The Longhorns escaped with a 98-96 win, but Durant’s 30 points and 16 rebounds, Law’s 33 points and
five assists and the magic of that night circled the college basketball world. Barnes later called the performance one of the best he’d ever seen. An ephemeral hand of fate might have been guiding Donald Sloan’s on Jan. 16, 2010. The then-senior guard, in the midst of an All-Big 12 final campaign, scored 21 points in Austin and nearly led the Aggies to an upset just after the much-hyped No. 1 Longhorns had risen to the top of the polls, but also had a costly turnover on A&M’s final chance to seal the win before the first buzzer. Longhorn great Damion James scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds and three blocks in his last home game against the Aggies. Ultimately Texas stole an overtime win at home in a game where A&M never trailed during regulation. It would signal the beginning of the Longhorns’ precipitous fall from the No. 1 ranking to a fizzle out against eight-seeded Wake Forest in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Depending on the poll in question, both teams are ranked either No. 10 or No. 11 headed into the most recent installment of the game, but the ways that the squads mirror each other are found much deeper than in numbers. Both know that something has to give. “I have a lot of respect for [Barnes], I always have… It’s a battle for us when we go over there. When you have respect for someone, you usually get your team ready and go hard,” Head Coach Mark Turgeon said.

cants to provide a portfolio of their work. In completing the portfolio, preferably prior to graduation, students are able to meet with professors and advisers to check for the completeness and accuracy of the portfolio before sending it to various job industries or representatives. Many college students rely solely on their university e-mail accounts, which may pose a problem upon graduation. Be sure to create a new

in the world to Texas A&M. The TIAS Fellows will join our Aggie community, engage in critical research initiatives, mentor students and junior faculty, and contribute to the University’s collaborative academic environment,” said Dr. R Bowen Loftin, president of A&M. The TIAS initiative will be a continuation of Vision 2020. New faculty will be hired and there will be new positions created across the university. “Following the goals set forth in Vision 2020, the university hired over 1,000 new faculty, including appointments for over 450 newly created positions across the university,” Loftin said. The TIAS will move towards the first imperative of Vision 2020, “elevating the faculty and their teaching, research, and scholarship.” Top scholars who have distinguished

dents. Many Aggies have been going to off campus bookstores in search for cheaper prices. “My first semester of freshman year I went to the MSC and spent almost $800 on all my textbooks,” said Perpetua Mbachu, a junior allied health major. “That was too much. Then I found Textbook Solutions and have been buying my books from there. The books are good quality and they give you
Allen said. Career Center advisers offer ample guidance for those feeling overwhelmed by the graduate school application process, and can be easily reached in the Koldus building. For those not quite ready to face the reality of the real world just yet, there are also plenty of options available for this route. themselves through various accomplishments will be brought to the university temporarily or permanently. “This institute, strongly endorsed by the Research Roadmap Committee for the Academic Master Plan, would bring to Texas A&M, on a temporary (e.g., one year) or more permanent basis, top scholars who have distinguished themselves through professional accomplishments and who have received important recognition for these contributions (e.g., appointed to the national academies, selected to receive a Nobel Prize, or received other highly competitive and valued prizes and awards),” Loftin said. “The driving force behind the Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study has been our faculty-researchers, especially distinguished professors, who recognize the institute’s potential to build upon the faculty recruitment successes of the last decade,” said Jeffery Seemann, vice president for re-
search and graduate studies. “The current start-up funds proposed for the institute from Texas A&M for its initial five years are $500,000 per year, plus $400,000 per year for graduate fellowships from the Office of the President drawn from Heep Foundation funds, as well as up to $1 million per year for five years from the Office of the Chancellor,” Loftin said. “It is also anticipated that Texas A&M colleges, direct beneficiaries of having these distinguished scholars on campus, will contribute to the funding of TIAS Fellows, and this would require close cooperation between the leaders of TIAS and the university and system,” Loftin said. “Their activities here will enhance the profile and research excellence of Texas A&M, elevate the institution’s ability to recruit top students and faculty, and ultimately get us closer to our Vision 2020 goal to become a Top 10 public research institution,” Seemann said.
more money back when you sell books back. Since then I don’t think I’ve spent more than $300 for my textbooks.” Yet for those who are a bit more frugal or just can’t afford books at the prices available in town, students can borrow books from friends that have taken the class or buy or rent textbooks from online vendors. “I heard about Chegg from my friend and I saw their ads in Facebook Marketplace,” said Pamela Beltran, a senior psychology major. “Aside from their cheap prices, I chose Chegg over everything else because the
steps to rent and return were simple and easy. You just put the books back in the box, print the return label Chegg sends you in your e-mail and drop it off at UPS at no charge to you. It’s really easy.” With the Spring semester beginning, the hunt is on for textbooks at cheap prices. Students who are looking to save have a variety of options that can help ease the costs. “It all depends on how you want to go about buying your textbooks. Shopping around to see what is best is definitely always good,” Mbachu said.

Instead of joining the work-force, some students are planning on taking another route and attending graduate school, such as Katelyn Allen, a senior psychology major. Misinformation fuels climate of hate
A
toxic level of misinformation has caused rising tide of frustration, leading to heated rhetoric, and creating a “Climate of Hate.” The shooting on Jan. 8 in Tucson, by Jared Lee Loughner, which left six dead and 13 injured was a tragedy. The twisted opportunistic media coverage of the events and dismal lack of factual reporting since has left me sad, sickened and feeling truly dirty. Mixed reports whether Gabrielle Giffords was dead or alive were still streaming through the media when professional left and liberal hacks began the blame game. Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik kicked everything off speculating, “I think it’s time as a country that we do a little soul-searching. Because I think it’s the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out, from people in the radio business, and some people in the TV business that this has not become the nice United States of America that most of us grew up in.” Mixed reports whether Gabrielle Giffords was dead or alive were still streaming through the media when professional left and liberal hacks began the blame game. Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik kicked everything off speculating, “I think it’s time as a country that we do a little soul-searching. Because I think it’s the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out, from people in the radio
business, and some people in the TV business that this has not become Taylor the nice Wolken United sophomore States of economics major America that most of us grew up in.” Paul Krugman, New York Times pundit crowed, “it’s the saturation of our political discourse — and especially our airwaves — with eliminationist rhetoric that lies behind the rising tide of violence … Let’s not make a false pretense of balance: it’s coming, overwhelmingly, from the right.” John Nichols at The Nation helped lead the Palin charge noting, “Giffords was one of 20 House members whose district was marked with a gun sight target in a SarahPAC message that had Palin telling her ardent backers: ‘It’s Time to Take a Stand.’” Another familiar New York Times columnist, Bob Hebert gave us this gem of wisdom, “By all means, condemn the hateful rhetoric that has poured so much poison into our political discourse…If we want to reverse the flood tide of killing in this country, we’ll have to do a hell of a lot more than bad-mouth a few sorry politicians and lame-brained talking heads.” It has been 30 years since the last assassination attempt on a U.S. lawmaker or as Hebert sees, a flood tide of killing. It is apparently also going to take a lot more than “bad-mouth” politicians and talking heads to stop the “hateful rhetoric that has poured so much poison into our political discourse.” You know, fight fire with fire. The right immediately went on the defensive. Loughner’s favorite books include Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto, and he flagged a
favorite YouTube video of a person dressed as a terrorist burning the American flag. A friend of the shooter described him as “left wing” and a “pothead” as recently as 2007. In Loughner’s YouTube videos he mentions leaving the religion section blank on his military application and laments receiving a mini Bible. As more and more information was revealed about Loughner the left tweaked the argument. Palin, Limbaugh and the Tea Party were responsible for creating what Krugman called a “climate of hate.” Then came the war of the words. Palin said: “Don’t retreat, RELOAD!” Sharon Angle, a Tea Party favorite who ran against Harry Reid, used the unfortunate term, “Second Amendment remedies.” Obama said: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we

bring a gun,” and “If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, ‘We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends.’” Chris Mathews of MSNBC said about Rush Limbaugh: “at some point somebody’s going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he’s going to explode like a giant blimp.” The “climate of hate” is far from one sided and misses the point. The blame for this tragedy rests neither with the right or left, conservative or liberal but with Jerrod Lee Loughner. He committed this atrocity, and it is despicable to turn this tragedy into a political food fight. If we want to end the socalled “climate of hate,” first we must end the climate of opportunistic deception where politicians and the media so easily turn every event into and excuse to perjure their opposition.
