SBP debate today The candidates for student body president will debate today at the Zone Plaza in front of Kyle Field. A Student Senate forum and Aggie Green Fund forum will follow at Rudder Tower. Election Commissioner and senior political science major Jacob Lopez said the student body president debate is a great way for students to learn about candidates. “I think it is important because who you elect for student body president is the figurehead for the University,” Lopez said. “They are a direct link to anything a student would possibly need.”The debate will take place from 11-1 p.m. The Aggie Green Fund meeting will be at 1:30 p.m., ending with a senate forum from 3-5 p.m. The Aggie Green Fund is a student movement pushing for tuition to fund “green” initiatives on campus. In case of rain the debate, Senate Forum and Aggie Green Fund will be moved from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. in Koldus, room 144. Travis Lawson, staff writer

Silver Taps honors fallen ■ Hughes loved people, the outdoors and the Aggie community that offered it all Samantha Johnson The Battalion Trigg Jackson Hughes will be remembered tonight at Silver Taps. Hughes, a junior physics major and member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, died on Jan. 30. He was 19. Matt Brown, a senior finance major, Hughes said he remembers Hughes as fun-loving and full of energy. “Trigg was the social chairman for Beta Theta Pi when I was president, he always had a smile on his face and full of life, full of energy; he was a great man,” Brown said. Brown said Hughes’s outlook on life had a way of lifting people’s spirits and making days better. “Trigg really had a great personality; he was one of those guys who, if you were having a bad day he could turn things around in 30 seconds or less, just by being around him,” he said.

The Battalion Today is primary election day for multiple state and national offices, including Texas governor. The Rasmussen telephone survey results posted Wednesday indicated that of potential voters in the Republican primary, 48 percent would vote for incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, 27 percent favored U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and 16 percent favored Debra Medina. Perry is seeking his election to his third term as governor. Before being elected governor in 2000, class of 1972 Perry served in the
U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1977, two terms as the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, four terms in the Texas House of Representatives and was elected lieutenant governor in 1998. Perry is a social conservative said he was be the most pro-life governor Texas has ever had. He is against abortion and in favor of banning embryonic stem cell research and “protecting traditional marriage.” At the Texas Rally for Life, Perry said, “I am so very proud of the welldeserved reputation Texas has as a pro-life state. And proud that those here today and people of conscience all across our state, have helped make

Texas one of the safest states for the unborn.” Perry said he is in favor of trying to maintain states’ rights and promoting fiscal conservatism. He supports strong border security. “I deeply respect the Federal Border Patrol Agents who work with our local and state law enforcement in the border region, but they have consistently been shortchanged when it comes to the resources that they need to do their job,” said Perry in a visit with the Irving Police Association. “That is why Texas keeps stepping up with See Governor on page 7

Corps of Cadets surprise, greet Loftin Travis Lawson The Battalion With President R. Bowen Loftin looking on from the porch of his house, the Corps of Cadets performed a march-in Monday to greet the newly instated president of Texas A&M University. The march-in for the president is a tradition not widely known at A&M. The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band performs songs including “The Ballad of the Green Brets,” “Nobel Men of Kyle” and “Patton” before concluding with the “Aggie War Hymn.” “It is not a very well advertised tradition,” said Tyler Vaughan, member of Squad 20. “It is done every year as a sign of respect to signify a new president.”
Not many students at the University know about the tradition because it is meant to be a surprise for the president. A fake meeting is called with the president and his top advisers, and when everyone is present for the meeting, including the president’s family, members of the Corps knock at the door. When the president comes outside, the cadets begin the march, and the band plays its songs. “It is exciting to get to interact with him, and it means a lot to be part of this and be involved with it,” Vaughan said. Loftin said he had no idea the meeting was a fake or the march was going to take place. See Corps on page 8

Associated Press CHICAGO — It’s a situation too agonizing to contemplate — a child dying and in pain. Now a small but provocative study suggests that doctors may be giving fatal morphine doses to a few children dying of cancer, to end their suffering at their parents’ request. A handful of parents told researchers that they had asked doctors to hasten their children’s deaths — and that doctors complied, using high doses of the powerful painkiller.
The lead author of the study and several other physicians said they doubt doctors are engaged in active mercy killing. Instead, they speculate the parents interviewed for the study mistakenly believed that doctors had followed their wishes. A more likely scenario is that doctors increased morphine doses to ease pain, and that the children’s subsequent deaths were only coincidental, said lead author Dr. Joanne Wolfe, a palliative pain specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital in Boston. The American Medical Association,
American Academy of Pediatrics and most other mainstream doctor groups oppose mercy-killing but say withholding lifeprolonging treatment for dying patients can be ethical. Dr. Douglas Diekema, a medical ethicist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, said the study results are not surprising. “Most physicians don’t intentionally push that drug to the point of stopping a child’s breathing, but some may be comfortable not intervening if a child stops breathing in the course of treating him or her for discomfort, Diekema said.

An easy way to spruce up a cake made from a box, it takes is a simple chocolate sauce to make a cake look like it came right off the dessert tray at your favorite restaurant.
Combine the cake mix ingredients and assemble as instructed on the back of the box and begin preheating the oven. Fill 1/3 of the baking pan with cake mix then layer the bars of chocolate directly on top. Be sure to keep some space between the chocolate and the walls of the baking pan to prevent the chocolate from burning. Now fill the baking pan another 1/3 of the way up the mix and cover the top with aluminum foil. Place everything into the oven and let bake at 360 degrees for 35 minutes.
While the cake is baking, begin assembling the espresso syrup. Combine all ingredients for the syrup and boil in a pan for approximately 20-30 minutes or until the liquid is reduced to 1 cup. Once complete, let set and cool at room temperature. Once the cake is complete, remove from the oven and let set to cool for 40 minutes then spoon the cooled espresso syrup over the cake, refrigerate for 1.5 hours, scoop and serve. “But James,” you say. “We all already know that regular personal hygiene is required to maintain a functional role as a member of society. What more could you possibly say on this subject?” Lots more, that’s what. Because everything you know is wrong. That’s right, personal hygiene is bad. “But James, don’t you watch Old Spice commercials? Don’t you know the use of personal hygiene products is the only guarantee of success?” Old Spice says a lot of things. For instance, the back of this Old Spice “Red Zone” deodorant stick tells me “Aqua Reef gives your armpit that fresh Caribbean feeling it craves.” So apparently I have only one armpit ... and it craves Caribbeans ... Old Spice also told me its product would give me “long lasting masculine scent.” But you know what? You can stop using deodorant and get long lasting masculine scent for free. That’s right, Old Spice lied to you. You don’t need personal hygiene products at all. “But without personal hygiene, I won’t be able to approach attractive members of the opposite sex!” you say. “You can’t disagree with that!” Yes I can, because I have real life evidence to support my claims: France. If you’re still not convinced, consider this word for word transcript of an experience I had last week: Me: “Yawn. Oh, crud! I’m going to be late for class! I better skip taking a shower.” Voice of Reason: “Wait, but what if you are randomly accosted in the middle of the street by an attractive member of the opposite sex?” Me: “Good point, Voice of
James Cavin Reason. Screw getting to class on time. I’ve got to keep my priorities straight.” Reason was right, and I wasn’t on campus long before an attractive member of the opposite sex randomly Take your accosted me in the middle of time and the street. avoid proper Attractive hygiene. Member of the Opposite Sex: “I am randomly accosting you in the middle of the street.” Me: “I have been accosted.” Attractive Member of the Opposite Sex: “I’ve seen you a couple of times around campus ...” Me: “Listen, if this is about me chasing squirrels yesterday, I didn’t actually eat any of them, I just wanted to chase them. The fact that I was carrying a photocopied recipe for squirrel stew was entirely unrelated...” Attractive Member of the Opposite Sex: “... I just wanted to say I’m a big fan and I wanted to give you a hug.” Me: “I’m being randomly hugged by an attractive member of the opposite sex, what do I do?” Voice of Reason: “How about hug her back?” Me: “But my hands are in my pockets!” Voice of Reason: “Oh, well in that case, just stand there awkwardly.” Me: “Ok ... I’m pretty good at that.” Voice of Reason: “Man, good thing you took a shower this morning ...”

Me: “Yeah, I even used that Caribbean stuff my single armpit craves so much.” Voice of Reason: “... If you hadn’t this situation would have played out very differently.” Me: “Thanks for having my back, Voice of Reason!” Voice of Reason: “No problem, buddy. By the way, you probably should have asked her what her name was.” Me: “Was? Wait, where’d she go?” Voice of Reason: “Oh, she walked off like 10 minutes ago. You were busy having a conversation in your head about personal hygiene.” Me: “What? But how am I supposed to creepily Facebook stalk someone if I don’t know their name? Curse you distracting thoughts on personal hygiene, curse you straight to hell!” So there you have it, if it weren’t for personal hygiene, I wouldn’t be crying myself to sleep every night. That’s right, because I showered, I am now going to die alone and unloved. Well, I hope you learned from my experience. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve been craving this aqua reef stuff like crazy ... We can achieve this by improving performance in the vitally important fields of science, technology, engineering and math while reducing the number of adults without high school diplomas,” Hutchison said on her campaign Web site. “I hope that people Hutchison will pay attention said she is for to the candidates’ protecting secpolicies about ond amend[education] during ment rights. the elections.” “I have always been a staunch deMichele Neffendorf, fender of our junior university right to bear arms studies major and as Texas’ next governor, I will continue to stand up to those who seek to erode our Second Amendment rights,” Hutchison said. Medina, a small-town business owner, is quoted on her Web site as a “David against two political Goliaths.” Eliminating the property tax is among Medina’s top issues. “If Texans are to remain free from the everencroaching state, Big Brother, we must own our property; on that we must not compromise, and we must not surrender,” Medina said. “In order to protect against subservience to that growing state, we must eliminate property tax in Texas, and we must protect against abusive eminent domain seizures. We must be free to own that for which we labor.” She said she wants to fight for securing the border and protecting gun ownership. “Protecting freedom requires that the people be well armed. Government cannot protect us from violence; we must defend ourselves.” Medina said. The two frontrunners in the Democrat primaries are Bill White and Farouk Shami. White attended Harvard University and UT Law School. He has served as mayor of Houston and during his time in office, crime was the lowest in 25 years. White has plans for stimulating the economy and recovering jobs. “As a former businessman, I know what it takes to meet a payroll and make hard choices. In this economy, it’s vital that the governor attract new businesses to the state, allow small businesses to grow, and ensure a skilled workforce through education and job training,” White said on his campaign Web site.
Hughes Continued from page 1
Holt Biederman, a close friend and fraternity brother of Hughes, said Hughes was liked by everyone he met. “He was a really nice guy, always having a good time,” Biederman said. “Everybody liked him and knew him.” Biederman said Hughes’ favorite activities involved being outside and being around friends. “He really liked the outdoors,” Biederman said. “He was happy when he was going fishing, hunting and just hanging out with friends.” Brown said Hughes loved A&M and the Aggie community.

We must increase our capacity as well,” Shami said on his campaign Web site. Shami is socially liberal and in favor of GLBT rights. “All Texans deserve to be treated equally and discrimination has no place in Texas,” Shami said. Students at A&M have different ideas about what the most important item on the political agenda should be. Michele Neffendorf, a junior university studies major, said education is the key. “Education is important to me,” Neffendorf said. “I hope that people will pay attention to the candidates’ policies about it during the elections.” Juan Baca, a senior ocean engineering major, said he wants the candidates to focus on the economy and job market. “Economy is a concern for me, because sometime in the next year I’ll be trying to get a job, and hopefully I’ll be able to find one,” Baca said. “I know there are a lot of my friends that graduated and had high GPAs that can’t find a job. I even have a friend that got his masters degree and is also unemployed, so the economy is definitely a big thing.” In order to secure the party’s nomination, the candidate must receive a majority of more than 50 percent of the votes in today’s primary. If that is not achieved, there will be a run-off election April 13. The general elections for most seats, including governor, will be Nov. 2.
“He loved it here,” Brown said. “I think it’s because A&M is one of the friendliest campuses in the world. He could’ve gone anywhere he wanted to, but this is his home. This is where he needed to be.” Biederman said Hughes loved all aspects of life at A&M. “He really liked the Aggie community. He loved everything from football games to going to class. He liked going out and having a good time, but he really enjoyed studying physics too,” Biederman said. Above everything else on campus, Biederman said Hughes valued his friends. “He thought his friends were the best things here,” Biederman said. “He just really loved his friends.”

involvement in the theft and said he supported their actions. “I am proud of my players for doing that,” Morris said. “This was the best team building exercise we have ever done.” According to police reports, video footage was attained of players Stephen DeGrate and Dakota Burch removing copies of Wednesday’s issue of The East Texan. Morris, former head football coach for Baylor, said he was not in agreement with the act being classified as theft because it is a free newspaper. According to The East Texan, Adam Goldstein, attorney advocate for the Student Press Law Center, said the actions taken by the members of
the football team are illegal. The East Texan is free for the first issue and 25 cents after the first copy. According to Bone’s police report, Athletic Director Carlton Cooper said the football team could not have stolen the papers without the aid of outside help. “I don’t think they are smart enough to do this on their own,” he said. Bone said he showed the stolen paper to Morris, who said he “didn’t read that crap.” Bone said in the police report that The East Texan cost 25 cents after the first free issue, and the prosecutor would decide if it would be considered a theft. “Then I guess I will be the first one out of the door in handcuffs,” Morris said. He then left the police station.
Corps Continued from page 1
“This is very exciting. I’m stunned,” Loftin said. “This is probably the greatest honor of my life.” Corps Commander Brent Lanier, a senior political science major, said it was an important moment that illustrates the Corps’ support for the president. “I thought it was great,” Lanier said. “The Corps needs the support of the president, so we express our gratitude for the new president’s support.” Loftin was named the 24th president of A&M Feb. 15, after being the interim president since June 15. Loftin said traditions like this are the reason A&M is such a special place. “I met with the president of the University of Texas today,” Loftin said. “Well, you will never see this in Austin.”
