The Battalion A dream that began in the practice gym of the CoxMcFerrin Center in College Station was fulfilled Tuesday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Texas A&M’s women’s basketball team defeated Notre Dame 76-70 to win the school’s first ever national championship. “We were not going to lose this game,” said A&M senior center Danielle Adams. “We’ve fought hard from day one at 6 a.m. to practice and worked hard through this whole season to prepare for this point.” With ice in her veins, A&M junior forward Tyra White once again came up with clutch shots in the final two minutes of play. Leading 70-68 with 1:08 left in the game, White took an inbound pass with two seconds on the shot clock and nailed a fading 3-pointer over the Irish defender. “I really didn’t know the ball was coming to me,” White said. “The play was designed for Danielle, but when I came off, I saw them triple-teaming her. I knew Colson was going to pass me the ball, and I just wanted to hit it.” White went on to hit two free-throws with 19 seconds remaining in the game and put the Aggies up 75-70 and secured the national championship. Named to the All-Final Four team, White hit 7-for9 from the field and finished

that defined the game Skylar’s steal

Bounce back

With 7:47 remaining in the first half and A&M maintaining a double-digit lead, Notre Dame dynamo Skylar Diggins stole the ball from the Aggies’ Sydney Carter and took it in for a layup, dropping the deficit to nine and sending the heavy Notre Dame crowd into a re-energized frenzy. During the next six minutes, the Irish went on a 13-4 run to pull even and went into halftime leading by two points. A&M’s subsequent funk dragged on well into the second period.

Colson was tripped in the process of dribbling up the court with 7:32 left in the game and tumbled to the hardwood, and a foul was called on Notre Dame. She then limped into the timeout while thousands of Aggies held their breath. But Colson returned following the break and calmly hit two free throws, extending the recently re-taken A&M lead to five. The Irish fought back to tie it at one point, but the Aggies — their defining resilience embodied by Colson — never trailed again.

Significance of Sydney

Power of perspective

4:55 first half — Sydney Colson, the poised floor general for the Aggies, gambled on a defensive hand check near the perimeter and was forced to the bench after being called for her third foul. A&M stumbled and sweated its way to the half without her, demonstrating the senior and honorable-mention All-American’s importance to the squad’s workings.

A&M possessed two timeouts with 12.8 seconds to go, and Gary Blair decided to use one after the ball bounced out of bounds to Notre Dame; the Aggies’ lead stood at five. The man whose calm demeanor, sharp mind and positive outlook created and powered the Aggies like nothing else — and his mad-genius sidekick, Vic Schaefer — ran through end-game

scenarios with his players and sent them back onto the court for one final stop. They swarmed the ball with unprecedented furor and forced an off-balance 3-pointer that sailed well out of bounds with less than 10 seconds remaining. The combination of the Aggies’ stifling defense and the A&M coaches’ strategies finally took A&M to the top.

Tyra White. Teammate Danielle Adams won the Most Outstanding Player award, but White followed her endgame heroics against Stanford with the shot that will likely stand the test of time in Aggie lore. She finished with 18 points, but her only taken-and-made three-pointer shot was the dagger. The woman who many call Blair’s “silent assassin” took the ball on the wing with two seconds on the shot clock and nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer’s sound. Barely more than one minute remained; the Aggies led by five and a legacy was sealed. Beau Holder, staff writer

Texas A&M Head Coach Gary Blair stands inside the hoop after cutting the net following his team’s National Championship victory Tuesday in Indianapolis.

A turnaround complete Austin Meek The Battalion

After a losing season in his first year at the helm of the Texas A&M women’s basketball program in 2003, an NCAA championship seemed far out of reach, even for a coach of Gary Blair’s stature. The Aggies’ downtrodden program, one that hadn’t enjoyed a winning campaign in the seven seasons before his arrival and continually finished at the bottom of the Big 12 standings, has now been resurrected to national prominence by a man who will forever be remembered as the first coach to bring an NCAA basketball trophy home to College Station. Before Blair was hired for the 2003-2004 season, the women’s basketball program was at its lowest point. During Peggy Gillom’s tenure from 19982003, the Aggie women posted an overall record of 53-86 — and an abysmal 15-65 mark in conference play. The Gillom teams never fared better than ninth in the Big 12, and finished in 11th or 12th place for three consecutive seasons. Attendance dwindled to miniscule numbers, and the once successful program fell into relative obscurity. That’s

when Athletic Director Bill Byrne decided it was time for a change. Blair, a Dallas native, had found success at every level. His first job came at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas in the ’70s, where he took his girls’ team to four Class 4A state championships, winning three, and compiled a 239-18 record. He parlayed his high school success into a job at the next level — assistant coaching at Louisiana Tech. During his five seasons in Shreveport, from 1980-1985, the Lady Techsters reached the Final Four four times and cut down the nets on three of those occasions. When Blair was lured back to Texas in 1985, he began working his magic on the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks. Though the team had won in the past, his emphasis on offensive rebounding and staunch team defense took SFA to the next level. “When I was at Stephen F. Austin (1985-93), there was a tremendous history five years prior to me being there with Sue Gunter,” Blair said in an interview with USA Today. “They were perennial Top 25 teams. All I had to do was pour a little lighter fluid on that to get the thing going.”

All-American leads the way Zachary Papas The Battalion

“I just knew we were going to take it home,” senior Danielle Adams said. “I predicted it.” She can score, rebound and apparently foresee the future. Just days after envisioning a National Championship, Adams fulfilled her prophecy by willing her team to victory with a 30 point, nine rebound performance on the nation’s biggest stage. A week after becoming Texas A&M’s first All-American, Adams led the Aggies to their first National Championship with a dominating performance in the paint and on the boards. “I knew they couldn’t stop me inside, so that’s what I did, I took it inside,” Adams said. If they hadn’t known yet, everyone in attendance soon learned of Adams’s dominance, including Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw. “We did not find an answer for her,” McGraw said. “We had a plan. We just weren’t able to stop her ... she’s just a great player. She’s got a big body and we couldn’t get around her.” After failing to live up to her star status in the Regional Finals against Baylor, Adams clearly made up for it by scoring the secondmost points ever in a championship game. When they needed her most, Adams came through for her team. She scored 22 of her 30 points in the second half on 9-of-11 shooting. She also provided back-to-back layups after the Fighting Irish tied the game at 66 with just under four minutes to play. Adams delivered in the clutch and carried the Aggies. “Every time we’d get down, we were telling each other ‘we’re not going to lose this game,’” Adams said. “We worked hard all season to prepare for this point. I had to do this for my teammates. They’ve been doing everything for me. I decided to take them on my back and just let them ride on my back.”

Pg. 5-04.06.11.indd 1

Notoriously self-deprecating, the head coach then took his talents to the University of Arkansas and once again led a team in the dumps to the top of the charts. He steered the Lady Razorbacks to their first winning season in several years during his first season as head coach, and took them all the way to the Final Four in the 1997-98 season. “They had some recruiting problems there,” Blair said. “They brought myself in and I brought a good staff. We got it done.” Finally, in 2003, Blair began his tenure as the head coach of the Texas A&M women’s basketball team. His first year produced a 9-19 record — his only losing season in 26 years of head coaching — but the program’s been winning ever since. Blair’s 188-79 record over the last eight seasons is nothing short of remarkable. Looking back at history, nobody should be too surprised that Blair has coached the Aggie women to the first basketball title in school history. He’s stuck to the same script since 1974 — taking losing programs and putting them back on the winning track. And Aggieland is grateful for that.

ajor collegiate athletics needed this. It needed a team like Texas A&M — a team built on a foundation of hard work, of want-to, of relentlessness — to come out on top.

Alex Farris — IU Final Four News Bureau

Senior forward Danielle Adams led the team with 30 points, scoring 22 in the second half to lead the Aggies to a 7670 victory over Notre Dame. Adams’ performance was enough to garner the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award. With this honor, along with being named an All-American and winning a National Title, Adams leaves College Station at the pinnacle of the game.

In a year mired by controversy and clouded by ethical issues, the good in sport — the teamwork, the togetherness and the selflessness — finally shone through. In a year when Cam Newton and Jim Calhoun hoisted National Championship trophies, finally one of the good guys had the opportunity to celebrate. Yes, for the first time in program history, A&M — by virtue of a 76-70 victory over Notre Dame — is the national champion. Head Coach Gary Blair took over a program eight years ago that hadn’t seen a winning season in the previous seven. Yet, from the gutters they’ve risen to become queens of the college basketball world. Most importantly, they’ve done it the right way. There have been no under-thetable payments, no compliance investigations, no dirty recruiting. Just basketball. It’s a team that is the perfect representation of A&M and the values it holds dear. They endure. They fight for everything they get. Every challenge standing in the way is conquerable. Some would call it stubbornness, but they’re just mirroring their coaches. “Perseverance and toughness,” said A&M assistant coach Vic Schaefer. “That’s who we are.” The NCAA Selection Committee rewards their splendid regular season by

placing them in a region with Baylor — arguably the best team in the country. And what do they do? They don’t complain. Rather, they just go out and avenge three previous losses by shutting down all-world Brittney Griner and earning a berth to their first Final Four. What do they do when they’re down 10 points with no semblance of momentum, with five minutes left against another No. 1 seed in the biggest game in program history? They just erase that deficit with poised play, dauntless defense and clutch offense. What do they do with nine seconds, down one point with no timeouts and the season on the line? Their senior leader goes coast to coast to make the biggest play of the women’s college basketball season, sending them to the national championship game. What do they do when given another national power with a de facto home-court advantage and a championship at stake? They come up with an answer to every Fighting Irish run, limit the effectiveness of All-American Skylar Diggins and turn Aggieland into a women’s basketball hotbed. Three times in three games, they were underdogs. Two times in three games, they faced seemingly insurmountable second-half deficits. Yet still they prevailed. See Queens on page 8

a night Diggins struggled with her shot, Peters picked up the slack shooting 80 percent from the floor, the third highest percentage in women’s national championship game history. “She did a nice job on the boards. she was effective around the basket, she rebounded well,” McGraw said of Peters. “Overall, I think it’s kind of a nice momentum builder going into next year.” And luckily for the Irish, there will indeed be a next year for their senior. Due to her extensive time out due to injuries, Peters said she was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. “Absolutely I’m coming back,” Peters said. “I already told the coaches. I think they would fight me if I changed my mind.” If she can stay healthy her days — as well as her team’s days — as an underdog might be numbered. But that doesn’t matter to a player who has been at the bottom of the hill so many times in such a short career. For her, the challenge is still getting to the top. “It’s fun if no one believes in it but you,” Peters said. “That’s really all you need is to believe in yourself, and clearly that’s all you need to get here.” Belief on its own was not enough Tuesday, though. Peters and her team will have to wait to complete their story.

I think this was huge not only our team, but the Aggie community.” A&M’s now nationally famous defense flexed its muscles again Tuesday, holding the Fighting Irish to four points in the final four minutes of play. The Aggies also forced 16 turnovers that led to 23 points. “Perseverance and toughness,” said A&M assistant coach Vic Schaefer. “That’s who we are and that’s who our kids are. “We don’t give up,” Blair said. Eight years ago, the women’s college basketball world laughed at A&M.

They saw the program as a trash heap. Blair, one of the most respected and likeable coaches in the game, saw a gold mine. His faith in the program and belief in his players culminated in one shining moment for the world to see.

After a season overshadowed by speculation and accusations, college athletics needed something to turn out the way it should. And 15 women, four coaches, one school delivered that something.

Please be considerate of others and keep handrails and ramps clear. There are over 300 bike racks on campus and a growing bike program now at Texas A&M. Help us clean up the campus and provide a bike program that Aggies can be proud of.

Two nights after A&M defeated Stanford in the Final Four 63-62 on a last second layup by White, The Tyra Show continued as she hit a 3-pointer that will put her down in Aggie lore forever. In college basketball, an entire season can be defined by one shining moment, and for Texas A&M junior guard Tyra White, the 2011 Women’s NCAA Tournament put her on the big stage as she hit the winning shot of the National Championship game against Notre Dame en route to a 76-70 victory on Tuesday night. “We had a bad 10 minutes in the first half; we found a way to come back, and Danielle [Adams] got the ball inside,” said Head Coach Gary Blair. “We follow through; we don’t give up. We might not play the prettiest game in the world, but it’s good for women’s basketball to have Texas A&M and Notre Dame in this game. I’m just so proud of my kids.” With 1:07 left in Tuesday’s game, the Aggies were faced with an inbounds pass but were down to only two seconds on the shot clock. Senior guard Sydney Colson tossed the inbounds pass to White who caught and released a cold-blooded 3-point shot with a hand in her face, draining the shot to give A&M a 73-68 lead. “Me and my team couldn’t let our seniors (Colson and Adams) leave without winning a national champion-

That was the game,” said Irish coach Muffet McGraw of White’s 3-pointer. “I thought that was just an amazing play on White’s part, and that play was the game.” Although slightly overshadowed by Adams, who had a team high of 30 points, White still managed 18 points

including two free-throws to seal the victory for A&M. White was 7-of-9 from the field and completed her only 3-point shot of the game to give the Aggies the trophy. Her performances in the tournament may not have been the highest scoring on the team, but the shots she made will forever be remembered as the ones that won the Aggies their first national championship.
