At 7 p.m. today, Aggies, friends and families will unite at Reed Arena for Muster. More than 300 Muster ceremonies will take place all over the world honoring deceased Aggies. This year Tobin ‘Toby’ Boenig, class of 1995, will be the 66th speaker for Muster on campus. Emily Ellett, a sophomore kinesiology major, is the Muster speaker selection sub-chairwoman. She said Boenig stood out to the committee from the beginning because his character and passion for serving others was evident through his many leadership roles and involvements at A&M. Among his many positions, Boenig was student body president and speaker of the student senate. In addition, he was awarded the Buck Weirus Spirit Award for his work with the student body. He graduated with a degree in agricultural development. Upon graduating, Boenig returned to A&M in 1988 and worked with the Services for Students with Dis-
abilities Office and later became the manager of collegiate licensing. Boenig left to pursue law school and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law. He worked in the compliance offices as an attorney at MD Anderson and serves as the associate vice president and chief compliance officer at the University of Texas Medical Branch Health Center in Galveston. “Shortly after graduation, Toby was unfortunately involved in an accident, leaving him partially paralyzed from the waist down, Ellett said. “His story of perseverance and dedication in life is truly inspiring. Upon meeting him for the first time, our sub-committee was left in awe. He embodies humility and compassion. He loves this University and the tradition of Muster deeply, and we immediately knew he would be the perfect speaker for our 2011 Muster. Amber Jaura, staff writer
MUSTER
Ceremonies around the world today will honor deceased Aggies Texas Aggies will have Muster ceremonies around the world today including three in Iraq and four in Afghanistan. The largest ceremony will be on the Texas A&M University campus and is expected to attract more than 12,500 students, former students and others. Muster is Texas A&M’s solemn and most visible tradition. It is a time set aside to honor Aggies who have died since the last such annual ceremony. No matter where Aggies are, whether they are as few as two or as many as the thousands who gather on the
Texas A&M campus, they come together each April 21 for Muster. Planners say the exact number of Muster ceremonies is difficult to determine because some are spontaneous, including some held on battlefields, just as happened during World Wars I and II and in Korea and Vietnam. Many former students return to campus for Muster, among them those who graduated 50 years before who hold a special class reunion. This year it will be Texas A&M’s Class of 1961. At each Muster ceremony around the world, a speaker
will be followed by the “Roll Call For The Absent. Names of those from that area who have died in the past year will be read, and as each name is called, a family member or friend will answer “Here and a candle will be lit. Following the candlelighting ceremony in Reed Arena, the Ross Volunteer Company will march in to fire a rifle volley followed by a special arrangement of “Taps. In addition, the ceremony also will include performances by the Singing Cadets and the Aggie Band. A relatively new addition to the Muster tradition is

“Reflections.â€? Its purpose is to more fully recognize the lives of the Aggies being honored by displaying personal items of the Roll Call honorees as a memorial to them. These items will be on display in the Rudder Exhibit Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Muster was first held on June 26, 1883. Former students of Texas A&M, then called ex-cadets, were to gather and â€œâ€Ślive over again our college days, the victories and defeats won and lost upon drill ground and classroom. Let every alumnus answer a roll call.â€? Staff and wire reports

Fencing slashes to the top in national championship

The Battalion The benefits of fencing are boundless. Not only is it a well-revered sport, “swashbuckling” is a résumé builder, and encounters with pirates happen to be on the rise. For those who always dreamed of uttering, “Hello my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die,” do not fret. Even if a six-fingered man never killed your father, there is still a place for you in Aggieland. Texas A&M’s Fencing Club clanged swords as they achieved top rankings in this year’s Club National Championships of Fencing at the University of Chicago. The United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs sponsored the competition, and teams from across the country competed. There are three different swords: foil, épée and sabre. Each weapon has a unique
set of rules accompanied by a distinct personality. While each fencer favors something different, junior Kat Kelsch of Tournament Affairs aligns herself with the sabre, the largest of the three swords. “Épée is the chess player, foil is the playful athlete and sabre is the kid who still has hope that [Jedi] lightsabers are real,” Kelsch said. “I felt that one called my name.” In Chicago, the A&M men’s épée team placed 2nd and men’s foil team placed 5th. In the individual foil competition, Lyndy Black placed 2nd, Zach Bartholomew placed 6th, Nicholas Modawar placed 8th and Robert Wooley placed 9th. “We are so impressed and proud of our fellow teammates,” said Peter Deleeuw, club president and senior biomedical science major. “This was an amazing year for the A&M Fencing Club.” The A&M Fencing team is also first overall in Texas.
They compete in the Southwest Intercollegiate Fencing Organization. These teambased competitions take place four times a year against schools such as Texas, Texas State, Baylor and UNT. Moreover, many competitive team members are also registered members of the United States Fencing Association. “Here, we compete in primarily individual-based events,” said Andrew Spriggs, team treasurer and a graduate accounting student. “Many of our members are rated USFA fencers.” But one doesn’t have to be a fencing aficionado to join the club. Deleeuw encourages anyone who is interested to come to practice or check out the club website. “Two people on our sabre team had never fenced before,” Deleeuw said. “It’s such a great way to burn off steam and have a great time.”

The Battalion Energy executives, government officials, leading educators, students and the top minds in the Texas energy industry gathered in a dimly lit banquet room at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center Wednesday. Debates about energy policy took place, intellects exchanged ideas about the future of energy and numerous business cards exchanged hands. An academic consortium called The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas sponsored the 2011 Texas Energy summit. This meeting addressed the future of energy in Texas. Freshman Representative Bill Flores delivered the keynote address to the luncheon. Rep. Flores, a former energy executive before his election to congress in November, addressed a variety of topics in his remarks. Flores said it was important that the summit’s site is at A&M because of the amount of research and knowledge that comes out of the university. Additionally, research conducted and the energy industry are vital to a positive economic climate in the nation. Flores covered topics from views on the importance of affordable energy to the economy, the history of government regulation of the energy sector, the future of nuclear energy and food-based biofuels. Flores said it was the one-year anniversary of the Deep Water Horizon drilling accident in the Gulf and expressed his grief to the loss of the drilling crewmembers and his disdain for the drilling moratorium placed in the Gulf
of Mexico by the government. “Government reaction and overreaction will impact future events,” Flores said. The main portion of his comments centered on explaining what Flores calls the “all of the above approach.” This approach centers on six tenants: the need to expand nuclear power, maximizing the use of domestic energy and the need to increase energy conservation. “Our long term goal should be to wean ourselves of oil for transportation,” Flores said. “Remember you heard that from an oil and natural gas guy.” He finished by explaining the need to continue focusing on alternative energy sources without government influence, spending more on research and development and expanding the focus on stem education. “Our energy policy doesn’t need to be based off buzzwords like ‘green energy,’” Flores said. “It needs to be based off sound research.” After he finished, Flores conducted a candid question-andanswer session with attendees. The summit closed with a panel discussion on a regulatory perspective of the Texas energy policy. The panel members included Elizabeth Ann Jones, chairwoman of Texas Railroad Commission, Barry Smitherman, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Texas, and Kathleen Harnett White, director of the Armstrong Center for Energy and the Environment. The moderator was Ross Ramsey, managing editor of the Texas Tribune and editor of Texas Weekly.

The elder statesman Senior Sarah Zwartynski assumes leadership role Chandler Smith
Samantha Virnau — THE BATTALION
Senior golfer Sarah Zwartynski was key in the Aggies’ run to the Big 12 Championship in 2010 and is leading the team again in 2011.
The Battalion Only a season before Sarah Zwartynski set foot on campus in the fall of 2007, the Aggie women’s golf team, under then Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland, outshot all the competition — clinching their second consecutive Big 12 championship. When Sutherland took leave from coaching that next season after 15 years, new Head Coach Trelle McCombs was left to scour for talents that could maintain the team’s tradition of winning. She needed look no further than her freshman Zwartynski. An all Big-12 team and AllAmerican Honorable Mention her first year as an Aggie, Zwartynski proved early on that she would be a key piece for the A&M program. Her sophomore and junior years didn’t disappoint as she clinched 10 top-25 finishes, four in the top-10, and received yet another All-Big 12 team honor in that time frame. Now a senior, Zwartynski has adopted a new role in addition to being one of the Aggies’ most dominant golfers. The only upperclassman to play at any tournament in the 2010-11 season, she has accepted a major leadership role for a team consisting of almost entirely freshmen and sophomores. “I just try to share my experiences with them from college tournaments because I’ve been through a lot of things, good
and bad,” Zwartynski said. “I’ve just try to let them know that they can learn from my mistakes and do things better.” No other year have the Aggies needed her leadership more than this past season. A young team that struggled — by their standards — during much of the fall, she is a major reason why the team managed to surge back to a top-25 ranking in the spring. “We had a really tough fall and this semester we finally started to play our real game and we kind of got into the groove of things,” Zwartynski said. “We settled down a little bit, played to our potential and we’re now doing what we should be doing.” Continuously finishing as one of A&M’s top golfers, including a sixth and seventh place finish in The Alamo and Central District tournaments, respectively, she maintains remarkable consistency. The key to that consistency: putting. “She’s a really good ball striker and she hits it straight but her putting is what’s really good,” McCombs said. “Putting is what truly brings her together.” And though Zwartynski will be remembered as a leader this season as well as an All-Conference performer throughout her Aggie career, there still isn’t a moment, even after a solid senior performance, that trumps last season’s 10-foot putt to win the Big 12 title. “It was so exciting —
probably one of the greatest shots I’ve ever had,” Zwartynski said. “That was definitely the greatest moment of my Aggie career.” Her coach doesn’t disagree. Trying her hardest, in Brad Stephens fashion, to keep a calm demeanor as “Z” lined up for the putt, McCombs could barely contain herself. “It was just so emotional, and I hope I didn’t show any of that on the outside,” McCombs said. “But, yeah, I couldn’t sit still.” Now a graduating senior, Zwartynski has her sights set on continuing her golf career even further than college but mentions there will many things that she’ll miss once she bids A&M adieu. “[The coaches and players] have such a great history of playing together, and they’ve become my best friends, so seeing them every day and hanging out with them will be something I miss,” Zwartynski said. Her coach, too, will miss not only what she brought to the table with her golf game, but seeing her grow up as a player and person. “On the course I’ll miss the consistency and having that person in the lineup that you can always count on,” McCombs said. “Off the course I think it would be her continuous maturity that I’ve seen from her freshman year to where she is now. I’ll miss that growing up part of things.”
* Aggies will gather for
Muster on April 21st to remember, reunite, and to celebrate the unique and unrivaled Aggie Spirit.
