Special to The Battalion As 7 p.m. nears on Wednesday evening, mostly elementary and middle school students and tutors begin to arrive at Churchill Baptist Church with smiles on their faces that indicates their excitement to be there. The tutors, students from Texas A&M, are mostly members of the Sigma Chi fraternity who have found a rewarding way to academically and emotionally

invest in the Bryan-College Station community. “Two years ago, in the spring of 2009, Carl Gerkin and Detrick Eaton had the idea to do this, so Paul came to our fraternity and said let’s do this. At first it was just one night a week, on Wednesdays, for an hour. Since I’ve taken over, we’ve expanded to two nights a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, at two different locations,” said Miles Dunklin, a senior business major.

Dunklin is responsible for the current participation of the members of Sigma Chi in conjunction with 99 Tutors in order to reach to students in the communities of Bryan and College Station and offer free tutoring. “The students have grown attached to the fraternity members,” said Detrick Eaton, the president of 99Tutors. “They not only help them academically but also by mentoring them. Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit organization which provides reproductive health services to women, men and teens, faced legislation that would strip away all of its federal funding. This legislation, passed in the House and defeated in the Senate, is the work of Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana. Although it is illegal to use federal funds for an abortion, Pence said he’s ready for “legislation that will prevent abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving a single dime from the federal government.” “If passed, the Pence Amendment will come at a high cost of basic preventative health care for the women of Texas who have relied on Planned Parenthood for nearly 75 years,” said Laura Leon, Planned Parenthood representative. Given the Democrat-led Senate, this amendment was never expected to pass. However, it came extremely close. The near shutdown of the government revealed just how divided this country is when it comes to where taxpayer dollars should be headed. Since the Pence amendment has now failed, the real threat facing Planned Parenthood no longer has to do with losing its federal funding, but rather with the onslaught of attacks made by those disparaging the merits of this organization. By singling out Planned Parenthood from other health care providers for their abortion services, supporters of the Pence Amendment are dismissing the strides Planned Parenthood has made in increasing women’s health status. “The efforts by Representative Pence are one of the most misguided and dangerous legislative assaults on women’s health in Planned Parenthood’s 95-year history. These efforts are being disguised as deficit reduction but they are completely driven by an anti-choice and anti-family planning point of view,” Leon said. “The Bryan Health Center provided more than 5,900 health care visits [in the past year]. Nationwide, 3 percent of our services are related to abortion care and 97 percent are related to preventive care.” Those in opposition to the Pence Amendment question the extent of the repercussions of closing the clinics. “At this point, the supporters of See Parenthood on page 4

Taylor Wolken: Bill flies in the face of conservatism

From Colleen Fisher, class of 2010

I

n recent years, one of the greatest laments from small government types has been the unappealing political choice between big government and big government-lite. With the passage of SB 63-106, which endorses “conservative” Rep. Wayne Christian’s HB 1, it is abundantly clear that the real false choice is between big government and big government-right. SB 63-106 defines itself as “A bill supporting an amendment before the Texas Legislature to require GLBT resource centers to provide matching funds to traditional sexual education, and asking that such funding not be acquired through increased student fees.” Don’t be conned by the term “traditional sexual education.” Though many supporters of this bill might fancy themselves conservative, this is communism at the core. A real small government type would never prescribe to a policy designed to mandate equality through government coercion forcing “GLBT resource centers to provide matching funds to traditional sexual education.” In a sick way, this bill is actually

Pg. 1-04.26.11.indd 1

redistributing redistributed wealth to an outcome preferred by the big government-right. Sadly, this command-and-control style of resource allocation never leads to efficient results. Rep. Christian plays the role of all-knowing government bureaucrat in this play deciding that the services of the resource center will be best utilized in equal parts GLBT and traditional values. This assumption is absurd. While GLBT might be a smaller portion of the Aggie family, for that very reason these students are more likely to need the services the resource center can offer. Traditional values types, however they are defined, are assumed to be the majority and thus have less need for the specialized

services the resource center offers. They also share a lifestyle with tens of thousands of students and have adequate substitutes for the resource center in hundreds of churches and student organizations throughout Bryan-College Station. Mandating equal resources for the sake of government-sanctioned equality flies in

Today I read two articles in The Battalion, both very well written and generally on the same side of an issue. But attacking an amendment that attempts to give as much support to a “traditional” view as an “alternative” seems mildly extreme. It is true that those of GLBT are persecuted and in the minority, that some people will find their lives more difficult because of this; and yes, they should have help with these things. My personal hopes for this would be for the study of heterosexual relationships and sexual identity become as much of a focus as GLBT. The word choice of using “traditional” is unfair, but the idea of a joint resource center to help all students deal with sexuality and matters of relationships can be helpful to everyone. No funding needs to be pulled, and I know of counselors on campus who want to help students no matter what the student considers himself or herself to be. This shouldn’t become about making Texas A&M more or less GLBT friendly, it should be about finding the best way to have all inclusive resource center. This situation is akin to the lack of scholarships for white 18- to 24-year-old males; just because a person is a member of the majority does not mean that they do not deserve specialized help.

Firm ends work on gay marriage ban ATLANTA — A prominent law ďŹ rm hired by Republican lawmakers to defend the federal ban on gay marriage said it was withdrawing from the case amid criticism by advocacy groups Monday, prompting the partner leading the work to quit. The move by Atlanta-based King & Spalding is the latest ashpoint in the public debate over gay rights. Chairman Robert Hays Jr. said the ďŹ rm chose to divorce itself from the controversy after determining that the decision to take the case wasn’t vetted properly, but gay rights groups had also been pressuring the 800-lawyer company with plans for a protest Tuesday in Atlanta and with calls to its other clients. The groups cheered the move. The decision, however, was sharply criticized by conservative groups, legal observers and the partner who had been handling the case, a former high-ranking Justice Department ofďŹ cial under President George W. Bush. Washington-based attorney Paul Clement said he’s moving to another law ofďŹ ce so he can continue the work.

Reliving Rosie the Riveter Aggie Women Build empowers female students

Caroline Ward

The Battalion For one Aggie woman, power tools and simple machines gave her a sense of pride and confidence in her newfound construction abilities as she discovered what she was capable of building. This year, Hailey Minter took the Collegiate Challenge in Des Moines, Iowa, an event in which a group of students assist local chapters of Habitat for Humanity all over the country by helping to build a house. Minter quickly learned she could gain self-assurance by the physical labor of hammering and using circular saws. “I just felt empowered. It’s a good opportunity for girls to know you … can do stuff that you wouldn’t think you could do. I never saw myself hammering,” said Minter, a junior human resources major. The Bryan-College Station chapter of Habitat for Humanity asked a few girls in the Aggie Habitat to start a Women’s Build chapter at Texas A&M in October 2010. The founders wanted this feeling of authorization for all the women on campus. “What I think is one of the most important things is to empower women because we are going to be the ones building this house. We can get guys’ help, but this is about empowering women. We

can do it,” Mintor said. The newborn club has had three meetings and is looking to gain new members for the upcoming school year. The organization will be having a scavenger hunt beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Academic Plaza, starting by the Sul Ross statue. “You show interest and you come and you are in,” said Kelsey Brawner, a junior information and operations management major and the current leader of the organization. Women’s Build will continue its activity during the summer for anyone who is in town and wants to participate. Members even addressed the concerns of the club posing a threat to Aggie Habitat’s membership. “Honestly, it’s probably creating more opportunity for the women to get involved,” Brawner said. “Right now our main goal is to recruit women across campus, not necessarily from Aggie Habitat. Most of the girls in Habitat that want to do it have already shown their interest. So right now our goal is to get the other 20,000 women on campus interested.” Since the clubs have the same goal of building houses for those who need and deserve them, many members will be involved with both organizations. “I don’t think it would pose any type of competition to the type of work that [Aggie Habitat is] trying to do,” said Elida Espinoza, a junior entomology major and member of both Aggie Habitat and Aggie Women Build.

“Usually Aggie Habitat’s house is built during the spring semester, and our house would be built during the fall. If anything, it would bring the women in the group together because it’s something that we are doing not for just the Habitat women, but for all women on campus,” Espinoza said. In essence, both organizations strive toward the same goals. “The purpose of Aggie Women Build [and Aggie Habitat] is to raise $40,000 and to sponsor our own house where the women get to build it. It’s sort of a branch of Aggie Habitat with the same purpose and goal, but women only,” Brawner said. The organization’s main source of income is individual sponsorships from alumni women in the Aggie Network; the club has already received its first $2,000. Building will start in September and the house would be presented to its owner in December if everything goes according to plan. However, there is a lot of legwork that needs to be done before the building begins. “I feel like a lot of us are really fortunate, and it’s a great opportunity to serve others. It’s not like we are giving someone a house. This family is deserving; they participate in building it and they pay for it with the mortgage,” Minter said. “It’s like a Big Event, but all the time.” Fittingly, one of the mantras of Habitat for Humanity is: “It’s not a hand-out, but a hand-up.”

Postseason bound

Men’s and women’s tennis teams prepare for Big 12 and National Championship tournaments Ben Crook

The Battalion The postseason is upon us in Big 12 tennis. Both the Aggie men’s and women’s tennis teams completed regular season play last weekend, and now look ahead to the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. The women finished strong Friday with a 5-2 win against Texas Tech. The seniors propelled the team to victory as Christi Liles and Morgan Frank picked up wins in both singles and doubles, and Stephanie Davidson teamed up with Frank in their doubles victory. Frank’s win in singles made her the outright Big 12 champion at the No. 2 line with a 10-1 regular season record. The honor gives Frank a total of five individual titles, the most in Texas A&M history. “I told Morgan it’s going to be a long time before we have someone who wins as much as she did on that second court, said Head Coach Bobby Kleinecke. “When Morgan is out there playing, it is never dull. She is going to put up a fight, and we are very proud of what she has accomplished. She has done well for us. Saturday afternoon it was the No. 6 men’s turn as they took down arch-rival and No. 12 Texas with a 5-2 victory, Texas A&M a point in the

Lonestar Showdown. Once again it was the Aggie seniors doing everything they could for they victory. Austin Krajicek, Jeff Dadamo and Alexey Grigorov avenged a February loss to the Longhorns in impressive fashion. The No. 4 doubles pairing of Krajicek and Dadamo downed Texas’ duo, ranked No. 8, then defeated their respective opponents in singles play in straight sets. Grigorov teamed with freshman Junior Ore for the clinching win in doubles and was the first one off the court in singles, dismantling No. 105 Jean Anderson (6-4, 6-2). “Obviously this was a great win for us and for our senior class, said Head Coach Steve Denton. “The seniors took care of business at their lines in doubles and then to have all three, Griggy, Jeff and Austin win their singles matches to finish it off, I couldn’t be more proud. The wins clinched the No. 4 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, for the women and men in the Big 12 tournament to be played this weekend in Waco. Both teams will be eager for good showings in advance of the national tournament. First and second round action for nationals begins May 13, with the NCAA Championships taking place May 19-30 at Stanford University.

Senior Stephanie Davidson (below) and the No. 30 Aggie women defeated Texas Tech Friday for Senior Night. They are the No. 4 seed in the Big 12 Championships and begin play Friday in Waco. Junior Alexey Grigorov and the No. 6 men’s team closed out their regular season with a 5-2 victory over Texas. They will enter this weekend’s Big 12 tournament as the No. 2 seed and take on Oklahoma State Friday.

news for you texas Drought could continue in southern US FORT WORTH, Texas — The extreme drought that has gripped parts of nine states — most of them in the South — is expected to drag on for several months or intensify, posing a risk for more wildfires, agriculture problems and water restrictions, national weather experts said Monday. Portions of Texas and a small part of eastern Louisiana are the only parts of the nation that rank in the National Weather Service’s worst drought condition category, said Victor Murphy, the climate service program manager for the National Weather Service’s southern region, based in Fort Worth. The “exceptional” drought level happens once every 50 to 100 years, he said. Much of the rest of Texas and Louisiana are in extreme drought conditions — the worst in 20 to 50 years — as are parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Florida and tiny portions of Colorado and Kansas. Other areas of those states are experiencing severe and moderate drought conditions, along with parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. May is “pretty much our last chance to mitigate this thing,” because that month typically brings the most rainfall in many of the bonedry states, including Texas and Oklahoma, which need about 4 inches of rain in the next month, Murphy said. Yahoo acquisition adds way to share TV show info SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Yahoo Inc. has bought the maker of mobile software that makes it easier for people to let their friends know what TV shows they’re watching. The deal to buy IntoNow, announced Monday, is part of Yahoo’s effort to provide more information-sharing services. The company, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is trying to give people more reasons to stay on its website and services instead of increasingly popular online hangouts such as Facebook and Twitter. Financial terms weren’t disclosed. IntoNow also lets viewers identify their favorite TV commercials, a feature that might open up ways for Yahoo to sell more ads in its online videos. Although its website still ranks among the Internet’s top destinations, Yahoo’s growth in ad revenue hasn’t kept pace with the rest of the Web. The shortfall has hurt Yahoo’s stock price, which has been in the doldrums since the company balked at a chance to sell itself to Microsoft Corp. for $33 per share nearly three years ago. Yahoo shares gained 41 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $17.26 in early afternoon Monday as investors reacted to the latest speculation that the company’s struggles might trigger another takeover attempt. IntoNow, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., has seven employees. The 3-monthold startup is run by Adam Cahan, who formerly worked at Google Inc. and Viacom Inc.’s MTV.

GLBT Continued from page 1

the face of conservatism. The real solution is removing the barriers and the “us vs them” mentality that this legislation promotes. Drop the GLBT resource center and have an adequately funded resource center that can decide based on demand how much money to spend on different types of services. Certainly those directly addressing the needs of students have a better idea how to spend our precious dollars than Rep. Christian. That would be a market solution that shines the light on the most deplorable aspect of this bill. This bill has no intention of helping students. Asking to match funding for GLBT and traditional sexual education while explicitly stating you will oppose additional funding is a blatant attempt to defund the GLBT resource

center. If the legislators truly felt there was a need for traditional sexual education then they would not have offered in the bill that they would “oppose any increase in student fees.” If there was reason to believe the GLBT was over–funded, they would have made note of it. As a small government type, it hurts me to see not only the harm this bill is doing to the Aggie family and the GLBT students, but also the damage it is doing to the development of political identity at A&M by masquerading big governmentright as conservatism. Free market, small government types would never pass this bill. But ironically, the deciding vote was cast by a self-described libertarian. Are there dictionaries in the library?
