Throughout my childhood, all of our family dogs have been named after the royal family. Therefore I am definitely watching it. The only royal we have not named a pet after is Charles because my mom isn’t fond of him for obvious reasons.

The Battalion Although entrenched in a sea of protests regarding the creation of a resource center in opposition to the GLBT resource center, Texas A&M might see some relief. Student Body President Jacob Robinson vetoed the controversial student senate bill, SB 63-106, the “Sexual Education Equality in Funding Bill” on Tuesday. “The [proposed] center has no definition. The services that some senators have proposed already exist in student counseling and adults, graduate and office campus student services. I can’t, in good conscience, support student fees going to services we already have,” Robinson said. Online petitions, tweets and notes on Facebook have stirred emotions from both sides. Student senators have not been immune to the controversy.

“We don’t want to slash funding of any organization. We [the Senate] were merely talking about equal spending. I’ve been accused of homophobia, an accusation I have been unable to defend myself on,” said Greg McDuffie, a senior economics major and student senator. Although she voted for the bill’s passage, Speaker of the Senate Hilary Albrecht said Robinson is right to veto the bill. “Given the dialogue that the bill has produced since its passage, the veto was arguably the right decision to make. I can’t say I regret breaking the tie in favor of the bill because it has produced valuable discussion this past week that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise,” Albrecht said. “On behalf of the Student Senate, I apologize for any ill-will that was perceived and apologize to everyone who was angered or hurt by the legislation.” Other senators have a different perspective.

McDuffie said implementing a resource center focusing on “family and traditional values” is in the best interest of A&M. “Student fees are not the only source of funding. We, the students, are not financiers. It’s very possible to fund a center without raising student fees and without defunding an organization,” McDuffie said. Brian Hutchinson, officer of Aggie Allies and junior economics major, is pleased with Robinson’s decision. “The student senate is ignorant of the issues facing the GLBT community. The bill presents a false dichotomy of the GLBT community not being part of the ‘traditional family values’ community,” Hutchinson said. Hutchinson said that members of the gay and lesbian community do have traditional values. The reason gay marriage and adoption

The Battalion Many students depend on stimulation from caffeine and energy drinks to stay awake for late-night study sessions. Dr. John Simmons, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, said energy drinks do not provide real energy. “Energy drinks are really a misnomer — they don’t actually provide energy. Energy comes from calories, which should come from nutritious food. What energy drinks provide is stimulation,” Simmons said. Energy drinks cause the body to simulate its natural responses to stressful stimuli, giv-

ing the feeling of alertness. This expends the energy acquired from nutrition, which is needed for the brain to function properly and store information. “For a brief amount of time you are more aware, but afterwards you feel worse. The bad news is short-term or long-term it can cause bad side-effects, such as raising blood pressure, causing you heart to skip beats or giving you false results on drug tests,” Simmons said. Sometimes a student’s schedule allots last minute studying, but many students would agree that planning ahead is more effective than studying the night before. William Simmons, a sophomore business adminis-

tration major, said studying the night before the exam is not fruitful due to the amount of stress. “Seems to me the less amount of stress I have the better the outcome on the test,” William said. “Once when I had to cram, I felt tired while taking the test and my overall comprehension of the material was not great. During the test I could remember studying the subject, but I could not formulate an answer.” Simmons said there is an effective way to cram — in short spurts. “We all do a little cramming before a See Cram on page 2

Special to The Battalion Two weeks ago the College Station Fire Department responded to a fire at Cripple Creek Condominiums, home to several Texas A&M students and located near sorority row. Before containment, the blaze caused major damage to 14 of 16 housing units, leading to the loss of tenants’ living spaces and possessions. The inferno was traced back to an improperly disposed cigarette butt left in a trashcan. Students are advised to watch out for careless mistakes such as these to ensure that their own homes do not necessitate 911 calls. Clements Hall Resident Advisor Micah Scott, a sophomore construction science major, has several suggestions on improving students’ fire safety in dorms. “Consult the Residence Hall Handbook, or go online to rha.tamu.edu, to

consult the list of approved and forbidden items for use in the dorms,” Scott said. “Even items you’re probably used to, such as candles, still pose a fire hazard and are forbidden in University housing.” While the restriction on common items may seem excessive for some, many understand that they are enacted for the benefit of the students. “I think it’s in our best interest. I mean accidents happen all the time and it’s just one way of preventing them,” said Cody Osgood, a senior industrial engineering major and third-year resident of the off-campus Woodlands Apartments. “With so many tenants living so close to one another, starting a fire would affect tons of us before a fire truck could get there.” When fire trucks do get involved, the smallest mistake could prove to be costly. “While there is rarely any criminal liability in cases involving accidental fires, there can be civil liability if you accidentally start a fire, and damages could be sought from you by the apartment you’re living in. If you’re renting property, it’s a good idea to have renter’s insurance, which can protect both your property and save you from liability,” said Bart Humphreys, public information officer for the College Station Fire Department. Apart from potential lawsuits, students are advised to work on preventing fires to protect their own possessions. The fire department’s Mock Dorm Burn during this fall’s Gig ‘Em Week showed students how quickly everything inside a room could be reduced to ashes, while the recent Cripple Creek fire spread over the course of a few hours, leaving residents little time to salvage their possessions. “A fire can gut an entire

test. A little high intensity studying before a test is good, but that should be a review. If you are waiting until the last minute, cramming is better than doing nothing, but it’s vastly inferior to making it just a review. Studies show that after about 15 minutes of high intensity learning you become inefficient. So if you spend four hours in a cram session you probably aren’t doing any better than if you just reviewed for 15 minutes,” Simmons said. Not only does the brain become less efficient after a long study session, but the brain needs sleep in order to convert short-term memories into long-term memories. Ricardo Hernandez, a sophomore English major, said the best way of studying is starting a week before the test. “I go through my notes thoroughly and make flash cards. So far, these methods have worked great for me and will probably use these same methods when studying for finals,” Hernandez said.

Always treat the fire alarm as if it’s a real fire.” While those living in residence halls have to worry about acceptable appliances, those living off-campus must worry about another danger: cooking. “Nationwide, cooking is the leading cause of residential fires,” Hymphreys said. “Good housekeeping habits are a must. Pay attention to

what you’re doing, don’t leave pots and pans unattended and avoid wearing floppy sleeves that risk overturning your cookware.” While students are taking steps into adulthood and learning to live alone, one important life skill they can acquire is fire safety. Knowing how to prevent fires and how to properly respond to them can one day be the difference between life and death.

grew up in a traditional family; I have a mother, a father and a younger brother; they instilled values in me I will instill in my children. I am also a bisexual and an advocate of GLBT equality.

s the Speaker of the Senate I’m responsible for representing the Student Senate, and present the following statements on behalf of Senate regarding S.B. 63-106. I do not speak for every student senator, but rather for the organization as a whole.

Since the bill did pass with myself as the deciding vote, it has been adopted as the official opinion of the Student Senate, but this is no longer the case after the bill was vetoed Tuesday. There has been a lot of needed discussion generated since the bill was passed, and I only wish that this discussion could have taken place prior to last Wednesday. Contrary to popular belief, S.B. 63-106 does not advocate for cutting half of the funding for the GLBT Resource Center. The bill supported dollar-for-dollar funding of a traditional family values center based on university funds and student fees allocated to the GLBT Resource Center. The bill also requested that student fees not be raised to accommodate this, but did not say where funding had to come from. This led to assumptions being made that the funding would come at the expense of the GLBT Resource Center. This is a Washington Monument argument, taking the worst possible scenario and predicting it as the most

likely scenario. Also consider that more than 40% of the funding for the GLBT Resource Center comes from a private endowment managed by the Association of Former Students, which would not be factored into the plan. As passed in the Student Senate bill, the plan only dealt with the $60,000 of the GLBT Resource Center’s funding derived from student fees. To clarify, student senators who debated in favor of the bill specifically stated that they think the GLBT Resource Center has a huge need on campus and provides tremendous support for students. If the perception is that this bill is discouraging, intolerant and an attack on the GLBT Resource Center (which overwhelming response to this bill has indicated), then remedial action needs to be taken to correct this misconception. I hope the student body, particularly students who See Albrecht on page 7

If you don’t know, the student government passed a bill last week. This new motion says that because Texas A&M funds a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender resource center, the University must match those funds, dollar for dollar, to install a “Traditional Family Values” center. All this is to be done without raising student fees. Let me begin by saying I’m not opposed to this center being a part of our college campus. I think that it’s all good-and-well that heterosexuals need “support” in persuing traditional family values. However, this isn’t a bill about family values. In actuality, it is a very poorly concealed attempt to eliminate the GLBT Resources Center from our campus and others like it from public universities around the state. Heterosexuals have the support of our entire nation. They even have my support. In fact, I haven’t met a single homosexual individual who is against heterosexuality. Additionally, I haven’t met a single homosexual individual who advocates anything against traditional family values. On the contrary, the GLBT Resource Center has

encouraged me that even though my feelings of attraction might be non-conventional, there is nothing about my values or morals that have to be any different from when I considered myself heterosexual. Ignorant and uneducated heterosexuals believe that homosexuality is simply about sex. In my case, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In comparison to my heterosexual friends, male and female, I am by far the least promiscuous. I am a Christian, and I have attended a local church for several years. Although this specific church disagrees with this “choice” I’ve made, I still believe the fundamental truths of Christianity — we are sinners, and Christ died on the cross for the atonement of our sins so that instead of spending eternity in hell we could spend forever with Him in heaven. Because of my faith, I have a very strong set of morals. I don’t want to “hook up” with people — girls or guys — every chance I get. I still See Nielsen on page 7

A resource center for one group of students or one social issue does not require a resource center for every group of students or social issue. Resource and education is purposeful; it counters the status quo to offer a marginalized group a home and a criticized issue a safe place for healthy debate. Traditional family values at Texas A&M University are no more under attack than students with blond hair or students who enjoy pizza. A center built for either of which would seem preposterous. A center dedicated to “traditional family valuesâ€? and its problematic deďŹ nition is the same: preposterous. Proposed and passed bill S.B. 63-106 is at best ignorant and at worst malicious. I

From Ana DalMolin, graduate student I was not without surprise that I read the articles in The Battalion regarding the proposal of using resources from the GLBT center to support “traditional sexual education,â€? and it was disappointing to see in a followup mail call that students still think that it is fair to take away resources from a minority to help the “study of heterosexual relationships and sexual identity.â€? People who believe in this are ignoring the programs in sexual education already provided by the Student Health Services. They also ignore that the support this minority needs is because they are discriminated against and bullied by the ones who chose the “traditionalâ€? option and simply cannot go around talking to just any person about their difďŹ culties.

It is even worse that the same students ignore that the actual ideas behind “family and traditional values in fact go further than being against GLBT — they are also against women empowerment and nontraditional families, including single moms, single dads and families that have gone through divorce. Actually, they also ignore that there are divisions in student life that were created just to support adult students in such situations and even in traditional families.

From Chris Johnson, junior history major After reading Naila Dhanani’s article, I felt I had to respond. The article speaks out against the Pence Amendment, but is largely one sided. As a taxpayer and avid pro-life advocate, I am offended by the large political slant the article exhibits. The amendment is not intended to attack Planned Parenthood and leave millions of pregnant, lower-class women without care, but rather intended to ensure that our money is not going to support abortion, a practice many people feel morally uneasy about. Planned Parenthood performs abortions, that is a fact. There are other organizations that exist to help pregnant women, such as the Hope Pregnancy Center right across the street from the Bryan Planned Parenthood. While it is a large national organization, it is not the only organization that exists to help these women. If you are a huge proponent of Planned Parenthood, great, but don’t make me pay for an organization I stand so ďŹ rmly against. If people see Planned Parenthood or other organizations as paramount to the continuation of the American dream, fund them privately. Check out Abby Johnson’s exposĂŠ on Planned Parenthood, Unplanned, to ďŹ nd out the truth about this organization, not the spin they put on it.

Family values Rachel Clair: Senate wrong to divide student body day before Aggie Muster

M

ore than any other of the myriad traditions associated with Texas A&M, I feel like Muster is really when we put our money where our mouths are in regard to our bluster about all belonging to the Aggie family. With a lot of other institutions, claiming to be a family would be — is, even — empty rhetoric meant to cajole donations out of alumni. Not so A&M. Once an Aggie, always an Aggie, we say. No “ex-students of Texas A&M; if you were among us once, we will stand with you always. Even if you never attended a single day of classes — although thankfully, this year campus Muster will only count one from the class of 2014. I didn’t know him. I don’t even know where he’s from. I will probably never know. But because I am part of the family that boy chose, because in choosing that family, he chose me, I likewise choose to mourn for him and for all of the joys and sorrows he would have endured alongside me in this family, this state, this country, on this planet. Muster is on a very fundamental level about how we all belong, and about how the least of us is just as worthy of remembrance as the greatest. It doesn’t matter who we are. Our colors and churches and classes don’t matter. We are all Aggies, and we honor our own. So imagine, then, the overwhelming horror I felt when — on this of all days — I found out about the resolution that you proposed and the student senate passed last night. That you produced such garbage isn’t really surprising to me. Various factions on campus have been trying to find an excuse to defund the GLBT resource center for years, and this isn’t even the first time I’ve written to someone angry about it. I suppose it’s a little surprising that you chose to use this separate-but-equal tactic, if only because it’s so manifestly stupid, but then again, when I was a student I actually witnessed an anti-marriage equality protest wherein a dude “married his bike. I guess Texas Aggie Conservatives couldn’t get administration to allow them to bring a goat onto main campus for political purposes. Honestly, the argument isn’t any more absurd than any of the dozens of other versions queer advocacy groups and other persons interested in social justice get bombarded with every single day. At any other time, this would just be business as usual: see the news pop-up on MetaFilter, roll eyes, forward to friends with a few exclamation points and then go about the day’s business. The 10 of you, in your wisdom, decided that [Muster day] would be a grand day to make public an open attack on part of that family. And worse, you then decided that it would be appropriate to sign that attack with the names of 46,000 members of that family, thousands of whom will be assembling in a few hours’ time to do right by their fellow Aggies at the campus Muster Ceremony. And to that I say: no. Esteemed members of the A&M Student Senate, you don’t get to do that. You do not have the right to taint today with bigotry and hate, and the fact that you thought it not only appropriate but fair to do such a thing makes me wonder about you. Something like this goes so far beyond bad bull; it undermines not only the very values that you are disingenuously claiming to stand for, but the entire spirit and reality of both Muster and of Texas A&M. When I started writing this, I was agonizing over whether I should even go to my local Muster this year. I wasn’t sure how I could square the sick feeling I had in my chest over this with not only my responsibility but my desire to honor my Aggie family. How many of them would approve of the sophistry that the elected representatives of current students have so proudly endorsed? Can I even claim them as family at all? I still don’t know the answer to those questions, but I do know this: if you can’t set aside your prejudices in order to support your fellow Aggies, on this day especially, then I’m not sure you deserve to be counted among this family at all. Softly call the Muster — I’ll be there.

Aggies lose to Sam Houston State 8-5 in extra inning drama Austin Meek

The Battalion The No. 6 Texas A&M baseball team weathered a rough start from sophomore pitcher Brandon Parrent Tuesday to score five unanswered runs and carry a lead into the ninth inning, only to blow the save and eventually fall 8-5 to the visiting Sam Houston State Bearkats. Before the game started, Sam Houston State Head Coach Mark Johnson was honored with a painting of his No. 7 jersey unveiled on right field wall. Johnson served as the Aggies’ manager from 1985-2005 and is the winningest baseball coach in school history. “They’re extremely well coached,” Texas A&M Head Coach Rob Childress said. “They played extremely well. There were no surprises tonight.” The Bearkats hammered Parrent from the first pitch. After the first two batters retired on long fly balls, first baseman Chris Andreas finally connected with one and sent it over the left-field wall for the first run of the game. The battering continued in the second inning, when the Bearkat bats brought in two more scores and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead. “He hasn’t pitched good enough, bottom line,” Chil-

dress said. “We have to have a guy who can go out Tuesday night who can give us a solid six, seven innings. I’m disappointed.” The home team finally made a mark on the scorecard in the fourth inning, thanks to some sloppy pitching by Sam Houston State. After allowing the first three batters free passage to first, Paul Spinn walked junior third baseman Adam Smith, forcing sophomore Tyler Naquin home from third. A passed ball during the next at bat allowed freshman center fielder Krey Bratsen to steal home and later junior designated hitter Matt Juengel’s RBIground out to the shortstop knotted the game at 3-3. Bratsen also orchestrated the go-ahead run during the next inning when his single up the middle brought home sophomore Brandon Wood. Bratsen later scored on junior Jacob House’s single that took a funny bounce and slipped through the legs of Bearkat shortstop Braeden Riley, giving the Aggies a 5-3 advantage. Texas A&M looked destined to put another win in the books when junior Joaquin Hinojosa, who leads the team with eight saves, came out to start the ninth. The visitors had other plans though, as Andreas connect-

Junior first baseman Jacob House went 2-for-6 Tuesday against Sam Houston State, driving in one run in the Aggies 8-5 extra inning loss. The Aggies have won four out of seven extra inning games this season. ed on his second bomb of the night, a two-run shot that tied the game 5-5. Sophomore pitcher Dylan Mendoza came relief in the 10th inning, but also proved unsuccessful. Although he struck out three, he also gave up two hits and a walk that loaded the bases for the Bearkats. After being pulled in favor of senior pitcher Steve

Martin, after ceding the lead in the top of the 12th, Martin also allowed a run when his wild pitch soared past the glove of senior catcher Kevin Gonzales. Freshman Derrick Hadley was then given a shot, but he gave up a score when Riley’s blooper sailed just over the head of senior third baseman Andrew Collazo, giving the visitors an

8-5 lead. The Aggies tried to rally in the bottom of the 12th to no avail. After Juengel and House went down, Collazo singled to right field and then stole second. However, the following batter was unable to bring Collazo around to score. The Aggies will look to get back on track after drop-

ping their fourth Tuesday game in a row when they travel this weekend to Columbia, Mo. for an important conference battle against the Missouri Tigers.

other means. In addition to the multitude of support and services already provided at the GLBT Resource Center, maybe it could encompass even more resources for more students to use. The conversations that could be had might feel more balanced and maybe lead to additional growth, learning and understanding for more students. Please let your student senators know your opinion, so that the Student Senate can support that opinion. Student government elections are conducted so that student opinion can be more effectively voiced and advocated for, but without increased participation in the process, student government will not represent students to

the utmost ability. A central problem of student government is the relative apathy of the student body in voting in elections, voicing opinion on issues or even participating in surveys. I urge you to contact your respective senators in your colleges and residencies with your opinion and interact more with student government so that true student opinion can be voiced. Let this be a lesson to everyone to take due diligence in both advocating for their student opinion and holding student government accountable to that student opinion by voting in elections and staying in contact with their student senators.

In closing, I have to say that the GLBT Resource Center has supported me in ways I can’t possibly explain. Without it, the last three months of my life would have been exponentially more difficult. If this bill isn’t repealed, we are in danger of losing that center because we will most likely lose our funding. It has offered a listening ear to those who need to talk, a crying shoulder to those who have been hurt and support and love to several individuals who were considering taking their own lives because of sexuality. I hope that my children grow up in a world where sexuality doesn’t default to heterosexual, where they are taught to love others like I do — based on the content of another’s character and not on the combination of their chromosomes. I sign this boldly, and with no fear.

As mentioned in The Battalion on Monday, maybe there is a creative innovation that can be found that will satisfy everyone. The purpose of this bill was to allow student fee money to be used in a way that benefits as many students as possible. There are many instances in which more resources for heterosexual students would be helpful, whether that’s through a TFV center or through
