Senate elects speaker

April 1, 1998 A federal judge in Little Rock, AR, dismissed a sexual harassment case against former President Bill Clinton, stating the case had no “genuine issues” worthy of trial. A former Arkansas state employee said that in 1991 then-gov. Clinton asked her for sex in a Little Rock hotel room and charged that Clinton’s actions amounted to sexual harassment. Clinton denied any wrongdoing. A unanimous ruling by the U.S. Supreme in May of 1997 allowed the case to precede against Clinton, thus establishing a precedent allowing sitting presidents to be sued for personal conduct that occurred before inauguration.

■ Albrecht campaigned on experience, communication Melissa Appel The Battalion The 63rd Session of the Texas A&M University Student Senate elected Hilary Albrecht as Speaker of the Senate at their first meeting of the semester Wednesday night. Albrecht, a sophomore political science major, served as off-campus senator in the 62nd session of the Senate and as Northside senator in the 61st session. She also served as the Class of 2012 president during her freshman and sophomore year. Albrecht defeated competitor and current Speaker Pro Tempore Kyle Womack with a vote of 38 to 26. In her campaign for speaker, Albrecht stressed communication between the Student Senate and the entire student body. See Senate on page 2

But behind the scenes are the sports information directors — the engine running the freight train that is the athletic department. “We’re handling media relations and publicity,” said Colin Killian, a longtime assistant SID. “We set up game day, game operations and travel. My mom to this day still has no idea what it is that I do. It just encompasses so many different things. We wear the hat

of the historians, record-keepers, publishers, editors, reporters and event managers.” After 23 years as assistant SID, Killian said he was ready to move on. He accepted a position as communications and media specialist for the City of College Station Tuesday. Situated in his College Station home with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Cole, Killian was reflective on a job and an experience explained as life-changing. “I actually went to Texas Tech,” Killian said. “I don’t like to admit that often. Aggies to talk global affairs ■ Students encouraged to attend the Model United Nations Forum Melissa Appel The Battalion Aggies will be encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and onto the global stage during the Model United Nations and Diplomacy Forum April 10. This is the first year for the forum, presented by Student Government Association Diversity. The event highlights international interaction and global knowledge. “We find that to reach Vision 2020, A&M must look beyond the city limits of Bryan-College Station to see that it requires more than a semblance of a global wisdom to become a one of the greatest educational institutions in the world,” said Daniel Gutierrez, fish aide and webmaster in SGA Diversity. “A&M also must see that within its walls are students that can help achieve this goal, and they need to be recognized and heard. A&M Foundation inducts 22 Maroon Coats members The Texas A&M Foundation inducted 22 members into the Maroon Coats Friday. The ceremony was in the Jon L. Hagler Center, and each new member was personally given a maroon coat by Foundation President Ed Davis. “The Maroon Coats are supposed to be ambassadors and serve as liasons. It puts a human face on why people are supporting A&M,” said John Zollinger, marketing manager. Members of the Maroon Coats are students actively involved in leadership roles. “We work with students who show a good track record with leadership already,” Zollinger said. “Students like leaders in the Corps, class presidents and other really strong leaders.” Taylor Bradshaw, an accounting

graduate student, has been a member of the Maroon Coats since fall 2008. “It’s been excellent, I really love the students in the organization,” Bradshaw said. “It’s been an incredible experience to interact with some of the most successful Aggies, and work with some of the greatest people I know.” The Maroon Coats team with the Foundation to support academics through fundraising programs. Supermarket streaker ‘bored’

Cop nabs suspect with Google Earth PACE, Fla. — A Florida Panhandle deputy was able to track down and arrest a man on charges of illegally dumping a boat near his home with a surprising tool: satellite pictures provided by Google Earth. Deputy Gregory Barnes used it to look at the surrounding area and saw a fuzzy image of the vessel at Dwight Everett Foster’s home. Authorities say Foster admitted dumping the boat and his son later removed it.

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — A man who has been charged with making a naked dash through a Tennessee supermarket told police he was “bored and didn’t have anything else to do.” The Kingsport Times-News reports that a man entered an IGA store Friday night wearing nothing but a face mask. Kingsport police arrested 22-yearold Daniel R. Lee of Church Hill and have charged him with indecent exposure.

“The speaker needs to be an advocate of the student body, and they need to have an external focus,” Albrecht said. In her outlined strategic plan for the Student Senate, Albrecht placed emphasis on communication within student government, with administration and with the entire student body. Supporters of Albrecht emphasized her previous experience and success at bridging the gaps between the variety of students and student organizations with whom she interacted. “She is a consensus builder,” said Ryan Davenport, senator

Students will discuss and debate resolutions on three international topics. The topics for each day are divided into the subcategories of peace and international security, social and humanitarian, and economic and environmental concerns. Specific topics include nuclear proliferation, stabilization of Iraq, disaster relief, alternative energy sources and sustainable agriculture in rural areas. Participants are asked to register and are encouraged to attend one of four information sessions prior to attending. At the sessions, students will be given information concerning methods of research, resolution writing and the daily agenda.

“We encourage everyone to join because we believe this event will provide a platform for intelligent, meaningful discussion on real issues that plague our world today, as well as the ability to broaden views and inspire positive action amongst our student body,” said Alissa Aris, SGA Diversity director of projects and initiatives and sophomore petroleum engineering major. Coordinators said the event will prepare Aggies to graduate and face the job market. “The purpose of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to expose themselves to major international issues and international nego-

tiations,” said Student Body President Kolin Loveless. “In an increasing global job market and economy, these skills are becoming more and more relevant to succeeding in the work place, so this event aims to add another opportunity to develop those skills.” By giving up part of a Saturday, Aggies can gain knowledge and experience relevant to an increasingly global perspective that reaches all aspects of society, Gutierrez said. “To think globally, to be able to relate, will be that most important ability to enable this interconnectedness,” he said. “The world is coming to us, and we better be ready.”

disconnect from the students,” Albrecht said. “If we don’t know what their thoughts are, we can’t adequately advocate for them in this room.” Scott Bowen, senator from the College of Engineering, was elected as speaker pro tempore in an uncontested election. The speaker pro tempore works closely with the speaker to insure the organization and cohesiveness of Student Senate. The senate continued their election of new officers with the election of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences senator Rachel Thornburg as rules and regulations chair in another uncontested election. The work of the rules and regulations chair concerns Student Government Association by-

laws and the parliamentary procedure of action in the Senate. The four remaining officer positions in Student Senate are the student services chair, academic affairs chair, constituency affairs chair and external affairs chair. These positions will be elected at the next meeting of the 63rd Session on April 14. Jacob Robinson was officially sworn in as the 2010-2011 student body president during the Senate meeting. Future meetings of the 63rd session will work to confirm his executive staff. Senators said they aim to represent the voice of every Aggie. “We’re here as the Student Senate to represent students and get that opinion heard,” Albrecht said.

The middle-aged friends travel back to their youth in the “Hot Tub Time Machine,” using their knowledge of the present to make different decisions in their pasts. they must do to preserve their lives in the future. Along the way, there are some screwups in the space-time continuum, which have consequences. Nick’s rendition of the Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started,” actually makes listening to the Black Eyed Peas’ music, dare I say, an enjoyable experience. In some scenes the audience feels like they have traveled back to the ‘80s. One example is a blatant “Sixteen Candles” reference, a movie in which Cusack had a role. Another is the random appearances of Chevy Chase as the mysterious hot tub repair man, evoking the decade when he was a big screen comedy king, starring in “Caddyshack,” “Three Amigos” and the Vacation trilogy from “National Lampoon.” Still, does America need a retro ‘80s comedy? Was the ‘80s really so long ago? The days of Ronald Reagan, cocaine and AIDS have

faded quickly as the decade prior to the dotcom boom and Monica Lewinsky. This decade deserves a look back, a glance at least to a time when Michael Jackson was alive and black. “Hot Tub Time Machine” keeps the audience laughing throughout the film and will give some one-liners to use with friends for a couple of weeks. However, the overall cohesion of the cast is mediocre, and the big questions it attempts to raise about life and its choices end up being morally wasted for comedic reasons. These reasons make the movie end in classic ‘80s style.

So, through a friend of a friend, I got through to John Keith who was in charge at the time. He called me and asked me to go on an interview in 1987.” The funny thing is, Killian said, he was fired from his job two years in but as luck had it, his hard work and a timely promotion to a friend paid off and kept him in Aggieland. “They fired eight or 10 people in December of ’88,” Killian said. “They told me I could stay until May while looking for another job. At the same time, [current SID] Alan Cannon got promoted. Fortunately for me, he was a good friend. So I kept working hard. I probably could have taken it easy. Nobody expected me to keep coming back, but I had nothing better to do. When May came around, they called me in, and Alan had asked the athletic director if he could rehire me.” Killian took over as SID of both men’s golf and

basketball. He said it’s been a time-consuming process, one that took him away from Jennifer and Cole. “The families really suffer a lot in our business,” Killian said. “I didn’t even get a vacation this summer. The spouses truly do deserve gold medals.” Like his job, where Killian must move quickly from task to task, Colin and Jennifer’s relationship moved a little quicker than most. “I was kind of enamored by her,” Killian said. “I asked her out a couple nights later. Two weeks later, I took her to a concert in the Woodlands and we saw the Steve Miller Band. I proposed to her that night, after two weeks.” “I think she thought it was a joke. It wasn’t in a romantic place. It was in the parking garage. It was a strange deal. I didn’t even think about. I involuntarily went down on a knee, like someone was pushing me down on a knee. We were real quiet in the car on the way back and I told her ‘you know, I was serious’ and she was like ‘OK.’ A couple months later, we were married.” As a family man, though busy, Killian almost always finds the time to shoot hoops with Cole or venture out on road trips, albeit work-related ones, with Jennifer, she said.

“It has been very exciting,” Jennifer said. “I am a graduate from A&M and I never went to any basketball games. So, I have learned to love basketball. It’s just been awesome. And we’ve had some fun road trips together and just great experiences.” With Killian’s departure from the athletic department, Cannon, his former boss, said he knows the experience of working with him on a daily basis will be truly missed. “He’s the consummate professional,” said Cannon. “A very good friend of mine who will be sorely missed. He has been, without a doubt, the best basketball SID in the country.” As Killian moves down the next road in his life, he has a chance to ponder back on the memories made. “Last year, winning the national championship in golf was a neat deal,” Killian said, “and because of the budget limitations, I had to sit on my back porch and watch it, and I was just going nuts.” He’ll be able to mull over the people he’s encountered. “Coach [Mark] Turgeon is the best guy I’ve ever worked for,” Killian said. “Not as just a basketball coach, but as a person. The way he treats everyone around him is just amazing. He’s a per-

Aggies to visit Israel The Battalion Some Texas A&M students have been given the opportunity to go to Israel for free through the Birthright Israel Trip. The Birthright Israel Trip provides Jewish students ages 18 through 26, who have never visited Israel, a 10-day tour of Israel free of charge. Michelle Moe, a sophomore biomedical science major, will go this summer. “I really hope to see more about the Jewish history and culture as it is in Israel,” Moe said. “It’s the homeland and it’s important for me to go back and see where we came from.” Moe said she has looked forward to the trip for a long time. “It’s a trip I’ve been waiting to go on since I was 13,” Moe said. “I was supposed to go for six weeks when I was in high school, but wasn’t able to, so this is my shot.” Caren Mandelbaum, a sophomore kinesiology major, went on the trip over winter break.

“My favorite part was going to Jerusalem, and seeing all the holy sites and how they’re combined with today’s culture,” Mandelbaum said. “It’s modern, but to see all the ancient stone and ancient sights there too is such a beautiful experience.” Mandelbaum said the only challenging part of the trip was the language barrier. “The national language is Hebrew and just trying to be able to communicate was challenging, but it wasn’t bad,” Mandelbaum said. Josh Pudnos, a senior history and political science major, went during the winter break between 2008 and 2009. “It was one of the best weeks of my life,” Pudnos said. “I had a great time, learned a lot about Jews in America and Jews in Israel.” Pudnos said overall it was a great experience. “It met all of my expectations, and I was dumbfounded by everything,” he said. “The connection was profound.”

WICHITA, Kan. — The man who gunned down one of the few doctors in the U.S. to perform late-term abortions could be sent to prison Thursday for the rest of his life, but he may have gotten what he wanted all along: It is now markedly harder in Kansas to get an abortion. Dr. George Tiller’s clinic is closed, leaving the state with no facility where women can have the procedure after the 21st week of pregnancy. An early vow by one of Tiller’s contemporaries to ﬁll the gap hasn’t materialized. The only question remaining Thursday is whether Roeder’s imprisonment will include a mandatory minimum of 25 or 50 years behind bars. “The national anti-abortion movement has a tremendous victory here,” said Dr. Warren Hern.

NEW YORK — A Yale University junior left a suicide note in his dorm room before heading to New York, where he apparently plunged to his death by jumping from the Empire State Building, police said Wednesday. Cameron Dabaghi, 21, from Austin, Texas, jumped from the 86th ﬂoor observation deck Tuesday during evening rush hour. His note said he was sorry and he would be jumping from either the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River in upper Manhattan, or the Empire State building, police said. Dabaghi was dead when rescue workers arrived at the 102-story skyscraper shortly before 6:30 p.m. He was a student in Berkeley College, majoring in East Asian studies.
