“Broken traditions” is the third of a three-part series in which The Battalion examines the effect of college studies and life on different kinds of relationships.

ome Aggies do not feel accepted in some traditions near and dear to Texas A&M; traditions such as the Century Tree and Midnight Yell. “I went to Midnight Yell once in the beginning and it would seem really awesome to go, but because I’m afraid to take my girlfriend, I feel like I’m missing out on one of A&M’s really cool traditions,” said Destiny Winning, a freshman environmental geosciences major. “It’s sad because I can’t do that like everybody else. It’s really a letdown.” See Acceptance on page 5

Daniel Williams, a Special Olympics athlete, threw the opening pitch at the baseball game Tuesday for National Student Athlete Day. Williams, 25, participates in almost every sport offered by Special Olympics and has participated in the games for 17 years. The athletes recognized are members of the Aggie Bombers softball team. “Everybody here does every different sport almost,” said Denise Bryant, a member of the Area 6 management team for Special Olympics. Williams was selected to throw the first pitch because of his history with the sport. “They wanted a baseball player, and Danny has played baseball with the Richland Youth Association’s Super Kids program for 15 years,” Bryant said. “He can throw that ball. I don’t like to catch with him. He loves baseball.” Bryant said the Special Olympics

What Travis can’t do physically, Danny can, and what Danny can’t do mentally, Travis can. They’ve been friends since they were 5 years old.” Williams was excited to throw the first pitch at National Student Athlete Day. “I can’t wait to do that,” Williams said before Tuesday’s pitch. Before being recognized on the mound, the Special Olympics athletes met Aggie athletes at an autograph signing. Students from men’s basketball, equestrian, women’s swimming, soccer and women’s tennis teams met the team. “The Big 12 partners with Special Olympics, so this year the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which is the organization that represents student athletes, has decided to capitalize on the

The Battalion Silence has long been the foundation of the military’s policy on soldiers’ sexual orientation under the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Pursue, Don’t Harass” policy. Today, Choi as part of GLBT Awareness Week, Lt. Dan Choi will attempt to break the silence in his presentation, “Truth and Consequences: One Man’s Quest to Openly Serve His Country.” Choi will be introduced by 26-year Air Force veteran Col. Terrel Preston, who served under “Don’t ask, don’t tell” for 11 years and is an active proponent of banning the policy. Lowell Kane, program coordinator of the campus GLBT Resource Center, said each year they try to find a widely known keynote speaker to focus on a serious issue or hot topic. “I can’t think of any hotter

Muster speaker chosen

Kicking up her heels

The Muster Committee announced that Maj. Stephen Ruth, class of ’92, will be the Texas A&M University campus speaker for this year’s Muster ceremony. While a student at A&M, Ruth was in the Corps of Cadets, Company D-2. During his senior year, Ruth served as student body president. When Ruth graduated from A&M with a degree in business administration, he was commissioned into the Army as a second lieutenant. Ruth’s military awards include the Bronze Star, four Army Commendation Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, the NATO Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Jill Green, a marketing graduate student and director of the speaker selection committee, said Ruth was the perfect man to lead the largest Muster ceremony in the world. “Whenever we called to ask him to talk at Muster, he was literally speechless,” Green said. “We had asked him a couple questions [during the selection process] and it was great. Everything he said reassured us that he was the perfect choice for Muster speaker.”

In his presentation, Choi will tell his personal story, discuss the effect of the policy on GLBT individuals in the military and answer questions from the audience. “He has gone on the record saying he is willing to lose everything, the career he has built for himself, because he is not going to lie about who he is and everything he learned at West Point and through the military tells him he shouldn’t lie about who he is,” Kane said. “Given Texas A&M’s military history and our current status with the Corps, it’s a really interesting conversation to have here.” Krista May, GLBT Aggies adviser and Queer Studies Working Group co-facilitator, said she hopes the people who attend will gain a fresh perspective on the issue.

“I would like them to come away with being able to put a real face and a real story to the issue,” May said. “I hope a lot of people come away thinking that the issue isn’t all that abstract, it actually has to do with people who are serving and who want to serve.” The presentation will highlight is the discrepancy of policy vs. enforcement. While Choi’s discharge proceedings started after his announcement of his sexual orientation, he has yet to be discharged. “There is that real big inconsistency there, so his frustration is pretty high because he is serving and there is talk about the policy being overturned yet nothing has happened,” May said. Choi has been an outspoken activist advocating overturning the ban. He has given more than 60 speeches so far about the issue and has continued to get involved in the protest scene. According to CBS News, during the March 18, 2009 protest at the White House Choi and discharged Army infantryman

Jim Piertrangelo were arrested for chaining themselves to the fence. “The fact that he is right now the most visible figure and has been on so many media programs and all different networks, is a chance to come out If you go and see someone who is currently making Choi’s headlines in a big way,” presentation will be from 7 to May said. ery weekend of the year. Their Fall Classic Games, a statewide meet, is on campus every year. The recognition and signing at the baseball game was part of an already strong connection between A&M and Special Olympics. “We are just trying to facilitate a good relationship with Texas A&M. Actually we have a really great one,” said Andi Kelly, public relations coordinator for Special Olympics Texas. “It’s really the first time we’ve taken part in this day and event with them, but we are continuing to partner together for more

and more things. It’s really great.” The partnership is beneficial for Special Olympics and A&M athletes. “It’s just a great way to be able to spend your time. Why not go hang out and to love on people, to serve them, just to be involved and be excited for them when they’re excited,” said Smith, who runs track. “They’re athletes just like us, and they have persevered through many trials in whatever aspect. It’s just a blessing to be able to go and spend time with individuals who are passionate about athletics as well.”

Special to The Battalion The life of a college student can be demanding and eating a healthy snack might not be at the top of the list for everyone. One solution has arrived in Aggieland. “We chose to open up a concept in College Station because we wanted Visit Red to develop the Texas market in an Mango’s Web site area with growth potential,” said at http://www. Daniel Kim, president and CEO of redmangousa. Red Mango. com Red Mango, one of the fastest growing retailers of non-fat yogurt, has been awarded “Best Frozen Yogurt” by Chicago Magazine and Seattle Magazine. Red Mango’s first U.S. store was established in Westwood Village, La. in 2007. Originally founded in South Korea in 2002, Red Mango now has more than 60 non-fat yogurt stores. “I really like Red Mango because I found their frozen yogurt to be the perfect combination, a healthy treat with delicious flavor,” said Claudia Rodriquez, a freshman environmental design major. “I would definitely come back for another visit.” Red Mango offers original, tangomonium, pomegranate and cocoa flavors of yogurt, and toppings include cereal, fruits, granola and nuts. The company gets its name from connotations of red being a color of good health and the mango embodying a nutritious and savory fruit. “Everyone is friendly here and I am obsessed with the yogurt, I find myself eating it all the time,” said Red Mango

adies and gentlemen, I have triumphantly formulated a solution for the classic cookies vs. cupcake debacle. I give you: the cookie cupcake. Everything you want and need in the palm of your hand with a recipe so simple it will leave you baffled. Ingredients: 1 box devil’s food cake mix 2 packages break and bake chocolate chip cookie dough 1 package of Reese’s peanut butter cups 3 eggs ½ cup vegetable oil Non-stick baking spray

employee Madalyn Rizzo. “My favorite is the pomegranate flavor with fruit and granola.” Red Mango products are certified gluten-free and kosher. As of July 2009, Red Mango added probiotic iced teas to the menu. “College students are nutrition-savvy,” Kim said. “We take pride in delivering a healthy product — creating a dynamic retail store and environment for the community.” As for the competitiveness of Red Mango’s prices, Kim said they have comparable prices per ounce serving as other local frozen dessert stores in College Station. “Our product does not have higher prices, just higher quality,” Kim said.

First, mix the cake as instructed on the box and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Once cake mix is well incorporated, pour into the zip-close bag. Seal the bag and set aside for now. Spray the cupcake pan liberally with the non-stick baking spray. Take the cookie dough and begin forming round pieces large

enough to cover the bottom of each cupcake — there should be a little over one tablespoon of cookie dough for each. Now take the bag of cake mix and a pair of scissors and cut a small hole at one corner of the bag. The purpose of this hole is to turn the zip-close bag into a piping bag to control how much batter you put into each cup and minimize the mess. Begin piping batter into each cup until it reaches about ¾ of the slot. Unwrap each individual Reese’s cup and place directly in the center of the cupcake. Loosely cover the entire pan with one sheet of aluminum foil and place into the oven. Bake for approximately 22 minutes, remove, let cool slightly and serve warm. Long Dao is a senior management information systems major.

hilifest isn’t a family friendly environment. Beer, mud, greasy food, loud music, gross portable toilets, obnoxious people and even more mud and beer aren’t exactly the equivalent of family day at Disney World. But while some college-aged Aggies would cite these seemingly unruly aspects of the festival as obstacles to entry, these things actually make Chilifest great.

The University campus is in the heart of a homophobic region of the country, said Lowell Kane, program coordinator of the A&M Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center. He said the reason “Closet Station,” or the concept therein, was a false pretense most people have about GLBT individuals. “I think there is a huge stereotype that exists out there that the defining quality in GLBT people is sex or sexuality. The stereotype is they’re constantly looking to date people and that is just not the case,” Kane said. “That stereotype is very hindering and damaging to the community.” Coming out Winning was lucky, she said, in terms of her “coming out” experience with her family. “My parents took it really well, and most of my other family,” Winning said. “‘As long as you’re happy, we’re happy,’ they’d say.” About five times a semester a student will visit the GLBT center because their family has disowned them; sometimes it is a temporary thing, but other times it is permanent, Kane said. “At 17, 18, 19, even 20 years old,

to lose the support of your family, not just the emotional support but also the financial support, can be a very scary time for students,” Kane said. While Winning’s parents were OK with her choices, Winning’s first girlfriend’s parents were not, and that is why they broke up. Senior accounting major Diego Arvizu did not tell his parents about his sexual orientation until two years after his first relationship. Arvizu grew up in Crockett, Texas, a “technologically backward” place, he said, and most in his family were devout Catholics. “This was my own adventure that I could take, one that my brothers could not go,” Arvizu said. “It was something to get out of the house and venture to my own world. This was new to everyone in my family: ‘gay son, online, boyfriend, what is next, not Catholic?’”

“From the start everyone that I talked to said that [Northgate] was the place to avoid, it was not a safe place for ‘our people.’” Diego Arvizu

Most conservative students The Princeton Review ranks A&M on the top of the list for “most conservative students;” usually not a favorable thing for GLBT individuals. “We talk about ‘We are the Aggies, the Aggies are we,’ but that might not always be the experience for individuals here,” Kane said. “One of the most common concerns I hear about is not feeling a connection, when so many students do feel that connection to being an Aggie.” To Winning, sometimes it’s the unspoken messages she gets that sting the most. “People won’t come up to your face and say anything, but if you wear a certain T-shirt or act different, you can just see it in their eyes,” Winning said, “like, ‘Oh god, look at that shirt.’” Arvizu usually “brushes off” the verbal attacks. “I’m usually too busy to pay attention to [people saying insults], plus they can only bark like dogs, it’s the silent dogs that I pay attention to,” Arvizu said. Arvizu and Winning have been warned about not being received well at some places in the Northgate area. Arvizu is an adventurous person, so when he was told of a place not for “his people,” he wanted to check it out. When Arvizu and two friends walked toward Daisy Dukes, they were silently ‘deferred’ by two large white men, Arvizu said. It took him a

minute to realize what had just happened. “They put all the puzzle pieces together for me and I was surprised that such acts of violence that happen in the news and across the world was inches away from happening to us,” Arvizu said. Winning said she received a similar warning about the Dixie Chicken, much to her dismay. “It kind of bothers me because the Dixie Chicken is a big A&M thing so I want to try that out, but now I’m a little tedious, cautious to try that out,” Winning said. Living and looking ahead Winning lost friends because of her orientation, and said many people just want her to go away. She was more stressed because of the populace’s view of GLBT relationships. “It causes a little more stress and it makes you more weary to trust some-

body,” Winning said. Kane said many GLBT individuals are forced to conceal relationships because of the atmosphere at A&M. While GLBT individuals have extra stress in their life because of their sexual orientation, Kane said this speaks to their resilience. “[A&M] is a difficult place to be, but they are here and they are thriving,” Kane said.

GLBT resources Aggies can visit the GLBT Resource Center in Cain C118 for assistance with situations or problems they are facing. For more information, visit http://studentlife.tamu.edu/glbt/

Tiger returns at Augusta Has he been tamed? Can he win?

T

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Tiger Woods returns to golf after a six-month absence at The Masters today. Woods admitted to multiple infidelities at a press conference Feb. 19 and said he was “deeply sorry” for his actions.

here’s no way he can actually win, right? I mean, honestly, what are the chances he resurrects from the dead and legitimately wins this thing? It has to be zero, correct? Seriously, there’s no way Tiger actually battles these newfound demons and at the same time defeats his competition en route to capturing a fifth green jacket. That’d be impossible. Contrary to reason. Preposterous. Unfeasible. You know, almost as outlandish as winning a U.S. Open on one good leg or as unlikely as lapping the field to the tune of 15 strokes at golf’s toughest test. Nearly as unthinkable as winning four straight major championships. As astonishing as transcending an entire sport. Oh wait … that’s right. He’s already done that. During a career that made him the most noteworthy athlete in the world, Tiger has consistently achieved the near impossible. Well, now, Tiger ventures into the Augusta jungle, devoid of weaponry, all of his secrets in open air and his personal life in shambles. It’s easily the toughest test he’ll ever face — on the golf course that is. Oh, I forgot to mention the little part where he hasn’t played a competitive round of tournament golf in nearly six months. But, what if … ahem … what if he climbs out of this hole — albeit one he dug for himself and dove headfirst into — and does the impossible … again? Wouldn’t it be the most improbable comeback in the history of sport? Not, the greatest, I realize. That superlative is saved for Lance Armstrong who, um … beat cancer. But, the most unforeseen? Yes and heck yes. The numerous infidelities. The multiple egregious acts. The worldwide outcry. And more than anything, the ruins that now make up his familial infrastructure. Really, how do you combat all of THAT, pull yourself together and win the most prestigious tournament in golf? Oh and here’s another major factor working against Woods: by all accounts, the Tiger returning to Georgia this week is a changed man. Just listen to him. “It’s not about championships. It’s about how you live your life,” Woods said at Monday’s press conference to a stupefied room of reporters. “I want to be able to help people. ... If I win championships along the way, so be it.” Huh? This from the same guy whose insatiable hunger for winning, unmatched competitiveness and otherworldly drive epitomized his first 13 years on tour. The same guy who didn’t want to just beat the field, but annihilate, devastate and embarrass them, their families, their friends and anyone associated with them. That unquenchable thirst for immortality was a microcosm of Tiger the human being. And now we hear “it’s not about championships?” Really, Tiger? Have you been tamed? If this is true, and I find it outrageous to believe, then say farewell to the dominant, transcendent athlete of our time. So long to the most famous fist pump in all of sports. Goodbye to the sense of entitlement; that feeling that every trophy had his name etched on it before the tournament even began. If he has truly tossed away the thing that made him the greatest, that separated him from all his peers, then a victory this weekend at Augusta becomes even less likely. Darn near … dare I say it … impossible. If we are to believe this new, unselfish, humble and appreciative Tiger, then we must also rule out a green jacket this weekend and in future weekends. But if … if that ruthless, intimidating competitor shows up on the tee today, then, like the rest of his career, anything is possible. And that includes completing the most inconceivable comeback in sports history. David Harris is a junior economics major and sports editor. Evan Andrews— THE BATTALION
