Legett Hall reclaims basement dorms Maegan Valdez Special to The Battalion

Roger Zhang — THE BATTALION

Legett Hall basement is currently occupied by Women and Gender Studies.

Legett Hall is finally reclaiming the basement for student residence after more than a year of student involvement in petitioning for the change. The basement has been apart of student residence for most of Legett Hall’s 101-year history, but since 2001 has been used as office space. The basement has served as headquarters for the department of Residence Life and, most recently, has been occupied by the women and gender studies department. New space has opened up on campus because of the philosophy department’s move from Bolton to the YMCA building. The

vacated space is about 8,310 square feet and includes the entire third floor, a portion of the second floor and the computer lab in the basement. It was requested and approved that this vacated space in Bolton be used for interdisciplinary programs in liberal arts, including women and gender studies. The upcoming change will help open up more room for students that want to live on campus. At the beginning of the year, Legett Hall was at 101 percent capacity — meaning girls were living in study rooms and lounges. “I think it’s a really good change because we need more space since three dorms were torn down in North side and won’t be finished for a very long time,” said Cynthia Young, Legett Hall resident and junior biomedical sciences major.

Many students and student-led organizations were involved in returning the ground floor to living space. Legett Hall Council President Lori Bumguardner drafted the legislation recommending the change that was passed through the Residence Hall Association as well as the Student Senate. “It was student led initiative that got the ball rolling,” said Brian McDonald, RHA president and senior political science major. “This year we really did work with a lot more students. Really this was a campaign of unifying people behind this common cause and getting them to work with us.” McDonald said there was an attempt last See Legett on page 2

Student photographers capture campus Owen Herterich The Battalion For some people, the term “photography” means little more than posing for the annual school picture or snapping vacation shots at the beach. For Matthew Wong, sophomore finance major, photography is a lifestyle. “My first camera was a disposable camera in kindergarten. As a kid, my parents let me handle the camcorder everywhere we went. I started to grow in photography and enjoy it more and more,” Wong said. Last year, Wong founded Vision Inspired, a student organization dedicated to promoting photography on both a personal basis and at Texas A&M. A photographer all his life, Wong came to Texas A&M and realized that there was no photography organization he could join to pursue his hobby.

“I first created the group because there wasn’t a photography organization on campus. Texas A&M isn’t known as an art school, but I know there’s talent for photography here,” Wong said. Vision Inspired is one of the only student organizations in Texas dedicated to the advancement of photography as a lifestyle. No such groups exist even at large universities including the University of Texas and Baylor. At around 30 members, the group has students of varying experience, from beginners to veteran photographers. Each week the students involved in Vision Inspired meet on campus to take photographs of the many buildings and statues. “Everyone takes photos for around 10 Roger Zhang — THE BATTALION

Procedural error in RHA president election leads to runoff Jonathan Webb The Battalion Mason Lanham was elected 2012 Residence Hall Association president Tuesday night, but because appropriate election procedure was not followed, Lanham and runner-up John Houdek will face off in a runoff election. Senior political science major and current RHA president Brian McDonald said incorrect election procedure led to the late runoff announcement. Because the only student who

registered to be on the ballot was disqualified, Lanham and Houdek were write-in candidates. “These races are followed by a runoff if there is no clear majority. In this instance, there was a winner declared with no runoff,” McDonald said. “We must do a reelection now.” Election Commissioner Kyle Jackson couldn’t be reached for comment. Lanham said he was surprised and a bit confused when he heard that a

runoff would be required after he was declared the winner Tuesday night. “I had assumed that with the low amount of votes that winning by such a small margin was acceptable,” said Lanham, who received 58 votes to Houdek’s 51. “I’m not sure why they would decide to announce results and then recant them the way they did, and that goes for all the elections including the senior yell positions.” While agitated by the predica-

Maryland Governor legalizes gay marriage BELTSVILLE, Md. — Maryland’s governor signed into law Thursday a bill to legalize gay marriage, although opponents vowed to rally voters to reverse the change this fall in a referendum that’s even anticipated by advocates of the new law. “Religious freedom was the very reason for our state’s founding and at the heart of religious freedom is the freedom of individual conscience,” Gov. Martin O’Malley said before signing the legislation that made Maryland the eighth state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage. The law takes effect in 2013.

Miss. Dept. of Health requests $2.5M AIDS funds JACKSON, Miss. — Representatives of the Mississippi Health Department said Thursday that they are requesting $2.5 million from the state Legislature to match a federal grant to treat people with HIV and AIDS. But a prominent lawmaker said there was little chance the funding would be granted because money is tight. The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides funding for services related to HIV and AIDS, such as paying for medications, providing health insurance and transportation to doctors’ appointments. The law takes effect in 2013.

year to reclaim the basement, however at that time the Council for the Built Environment, CBE, was not able to accommodate the request because of space demands on campus. This year students jointly advocated with the CBE a team of faculty and students that approve building projects and make recommendations to the president on how to allocate space. Lt. Gen. Joe Weber, vice president of Student Affairs, motioned for the reassignment of the basement of Legett Hall to Student Affairs for use as a residence hall, and

wounded a student who was watching a baseball game. Willcox Department of Public Safety officials say 40-year-old Arthur J. Tineo was arrested shortly after the shooting Thursday afternoon at Willcox High School. Authorities say a 17-year-old boy was hospitalized for treatment of minor lacerations from flying glass after the car he was riding in was shot at.

Fight over tuition for immigrants derails bill INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indiana senators fearing a backlash from conservatives scuttled an expansive education proposal this week after it was amended to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants already enrolled in state schools. Lawmakers banned illegal immigrants from qualifying for in-state tuition last year as part of a tougher immigration law. But Republican Sen. Jean Leising of Oldenburg amended a massive education bill this year to grandfather in those who enrolled in universities before July 2011.

More violent weather for damaged communities HARRISBURG, Ill. — Crews cleared splintered plywood and smashed appliances from small-town neighborhoods Thursday, a day after tornadoes killed 13 people in the Midwest and South. But the forecast held a menacing possibility: More twisters may be coming, and they could be even stronger.Damaged communities tried to take advantage of the brief break in the weather, mindful of one meteorologist’s warning that by Friday, both regions would again be “right in the bull’s eye.

CBE members unanimously voted to recommend approval by the president. The actual move is not yet scheduled, as the flooding in the YMCA building and Bolton has delayed the move. “We are waiting for space to become available so the basement of Legett can be vacated, but the flooding in YMCA and Bolton created placement issues with other units,” said Cheryl Hanks, chief of staff and assistant dean of Liberal Arts. Renovations in the ground floor of Legett Hall should be minimal, as the basic layout has been maintained. The hope is that the new dorm rooms will be available in time for fall 2012. The space will allow 55 more people to live in on-campus housing.

minutes on their own. After that, we come back, and I give the members pointers on how to improve their composition or make the photo more appealing to the eyes,” Wong said. In addition to pursuing photography on a personal basis, Vision Inspired strives to promote Texas A&M

through the group members’ photos. They publish photographs of the Texas A&M campus, student groups and other traditions online. This year, the organization is hosting a photography competition with the theme “Aggie Spirit.” Students are invited to submit up to three photographs that express the energy, essence, tradition and inspiration of the Texas A&M community. Amy Richards, a senior visualization major, thinks that events and competitions like these are good for the University as a whole. “I feel the group will be able to demonstrate a unique perspective of Texas A&M through students’ eyes,”

Richards said. Students can submit photographs for the competition, until April 2, via Vision Inspired’s Flickr page. At the end of the submission period, a panel of four judges will select the 40 best photographs. Howard Eilers is one of these judges, as well as the group’s sponsor. Eilers has taught photography at Texas A&M for more than 40 years. “They had a little contest last year, but this year they wanted something much bigger,” Eilers said. The competition is open to all Texas A&M and Blinn students, and the grand prize for the best photograph is a $250 scholarship.

ment, Lanham also said he is OK with recent events. “A few of the people I’ve talked about it with seem to be a bit perturbed, but I’m honestly OK with it,” Lanham said. Chris Tucker, Student Government Association chief of communications, said he is not sure how the error was found.

“Whether it was brought to [the election commission’s] attention or by someone else, the commission contacted candidates immediately and developed a plan of action,” Tucker said. “It is unfortunate that the win was recanted but I believe it was done in the fairest way.” The runoff will be held Tuesday, with voting ending at 5 p.m. Campaigning for the runoff will be allowed Monday. The results of the runoff will be announced at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
