Breastfeeding designation for public health
DANIELA PITEO bsrm@insidetoronto.com Monarch Park Collegiate acted as host to kick off the We Stand Together campaign launch Tuesday in partnership with the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative (MAEI) and Free the Children. T h e c a m p a i g n c e l e b ra t e s Aboriginal history, culture and tradition in an effort to raise awareness of Aboriginal issues. Former prime minister Paul Martin was joined by his son, David; Waneek Horn Miller, Olympian and Aboriginal rights activist; and Craig Kielburger, founder of Free the Children to discuss and educate area students about the third annual We Stand Together campaign. CLOSING THE GAP “There is a clear gap between what many non-Aboriginal Canadians understand about the issues and circumstances faced by Aboriginal people,” said Martin, the MAEI founder, to a crowd of students from the host school, White Oaks Secondary School, Samuel Hearne Middle School and the Toronto District School Board Aboriginal Education Centre. “We Stand Together is a grassroots initiative that starts right inside the classroom to teach young Canadians the significance of Aboriginal history, helping to close this gap, foster understanding and raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and history in Canada for generations to come.” The impetus for the MAEI had its roots in Martin’s youth, when he worked as a student on barges in >>>WE, page 13

Toronto Public Health (TPH) has achieved the coveted Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) designation from the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada (BCC). The BFI is a worldwide program of the World Health Organization and UNICEF. In Canada, the BFI designation is awarded by the BCC to hospitals and community health services that put policies in place to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. TPH is the largest community health service in Canada to receive this prominent award as well as the first designated public health facility in Ontario with a Baby-Friendly hospital within its service area, Toronto East General Hospital. This designation ensures Toronto residents continue to receive high quality infant feeding services from TPH staff. Families who have questions about infant feeding can call 416-338-7600 to receive telephone counselling and referrals to local breastfeeding clinics and parenting programs. A formal presentation, awarding the BFI designation to Toronto Public Health, was made to the board of health by a member of the BCC Monday.
National honour for Bowmore Road principal DANIELA PITEO bsrm@insidetoronto.com Bowmore Road Public School will join seven other Toronto-area schools this year that have been honoured with an Outstanding Principal Award. The Learning Partnership, a national organization, will present
principal Thelma Sambrook with the award at a ceremony to be held Feb. 26. “What good work can we do from the start of the day to the end of the day,” Sambrook asks of the staff and students at the Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street area school. “The focus is on making every day a special day.”
Sambrook’s vision of doing good work each day can been seen in the hard work of her staff and students as they advocate making the area an accessible neighbourhood. “The work we do at the school focuses on a more inclusive world,” said Sambrook. “We consider social justice an important issue.” As a collaborative author,
Sambrook helped write the story of Luke Anderson, a quadriplegic who chronicles his tale of being an able-bodied young man until he sustained severe spinal injuries during a mountain biking trip in the British Columbia interior. “The profits from the book go to creating greater accessibility in the >>>STUDENTS, page 5

DANIELLE MILLEY bsrm@insidetoronto.com Kim Stanford wants your socks – holey, tube, dress, work and even ones with hearts or frogs. She’s not interested in wearing them, in fact she hasn’t worn socks in months, rather the artist, who has called Leslieville home for just more than 10 years, is using them to make bulbous sculptures for her next installation. Socks might seem an unusual material to use for an art exhibit, but Stanford said she prefers working with material that could be described as ordinary or domestic. One of her previous installations, called Unravelled, saw her deconstruct then felt together thousands of steel wool kitchen scrubbers into a long length of yarn, which she then wrapped over and over around itself into a giant ball of wool. “I’m just trying to use mundane material in my art,” she said. “What I tend to be interested in with my work is the small, tiny insignificant acts that happen over and over again in someone’s life.” She said she’s interested in how those seemingly meaningless acts actually become a part of who we
thing she’s touched on before in her work. “It’s men socks I’m picking up everyday,” she said. “On the one hand, it’s just socks so why is it a big deal, on the other hand why is it still an issue for me or broadly?” When she speaks with other people about the project, it’s generally women who nod knowingly about the monumental burden that is constantly having to pick up other people’s socks. are. “For me in the last decade, other than being an artist, my life has been filled with domestic stuff,” she said. “I’m a wife and a mother.” And as a mother of two young sons – whom she adores – one of the actions she finds herself performing constantly has to do with socks.
“I’ve always picking up other people’s dirty socks,” she said with a bit of a laugh. “That happens over and over again. It’s a bit of a bother.” It’s also a bit of a commentary on gender roles and domestic female responsibilities, which is some-
The idea of using socks in her art first began percolating in Stanford’s mind about five years ago. She previously kept a sock diary where she photographed and recorded the socks she picked up off the floor and she’s done some drawings of piles of dirty socks. She began working on the sculpture piece in September and, incidentally, hasn’t worn socks since. “The really interesting thing is I can’t wear socks right now,” she said. “I tend not to wear socks in the summer and I just haven’t put them back on.” Don’t worry, she has a warm pair of winter boots.
Artist Project fair could launch career of Beach artist ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com For emerging artists, the opportunity to participate in a professional-level art fair and showcase their work to gallery owners, collectors and art enthusiasts could help launch their careers. It’s an opportunity the 14 aspiring artists selected through an ‘untapped emerging artists’ competition will have this year at a four-day contemporary art fair, which runs Feb. 21 to 24 at the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Place. Now in its sixth year, the Artist Project Juried Contemporary Art Fair gives patrons and art lovers a rare opportunity to meet and purchase work directly from more than 250 Canadian and international artists – and, of course, the 14 aspiring artists. “It can be a sort of launching pad for their career,” said Clair Taylor, one of the art fair’s organizers. “It teaches them about exhibiting, can lead to connections and it helps introduce them to the art world. “We want to create an interesting dialogue between established artists, emerging artists and ultimately the people who visit the show.” Through the untapped emerging artists’ initiative, organizers looked for artists doing something new and cutting edge that made them stand out among the other applicants,
she said. Taylor said the emerging artists are treated exactly like the other exhibitors, except they don’t have to pay the booth fee, which ranges from $1,700 to $4,700. “A lot of them are starting their careers and aren’t making enough to have a booth at that cost,” Taylor said. Beach resident Elaine Chan-Dow, 35, is one of this year’s ‘emerging’ artists. Chan-Dow will show her series Libraria, a dialogue concerning the evolution of libraries. She said she deals mainly with photos, but sometimes her work involves other mediums. Being chosen as an emerging artist for this show is a great opportunity, as it is one of the bigger art fairs in Toronto, she said. “For emerging artists, some of us don’t have those kinds of funds. For them to cut a section out for emerging artists is such a great thing.” South Parkdale resident Jesse Bromm specializes in glass as art. “I am using glass and found objects and mixed media to create sculpture,” said Bromm. “I have done a couple craft shows, but the good thing about the Artist Project is that people know that it is art,” Bromm said. Admission is $15 general adult admission and $25 for the opening night preview and party. Visit www. theartistprojecttoronto.com

Beach’s Elaine Chan-Dow series Libraria, is a dialogue concerning the evolution of libraries. Chan-Dow will be at the Artist Project Juried Contemporary Art Fair at the Better Living Centre Feb. 21 to 24.
The sock sculptures are made by soaking the socks in glue and then shaping them onto different forms. For the show, the sculptures will be installed over all the surfaces of a small room in an organic fashion, not in a uniform pattern. It takes place at Gallery 1313 on Queen Street West in Parkdale from May 15 to 26. The project is supported by a Toronto Arts Council grant. But before she can finish, Stanford needs lots and lots of socks. So far she’s received donations of hundreds of socks from fellow Leslieville artists and her neighbours, but in order to complete her project she estimates she’ll need about 1,000. While some people think it’s bizarre that she’s using socks as an artistic medium, they’ve been happy to help her out with donations. “People are really happy that they’re going to be used for something,” Stanford said. “And wives seems to be really happy to get rid of their husband’s tube socks.” Anyone willing to donate their orphaned, unmatched or holey footwear can email her at kim@ kimstanford.com – one stipulation, they can’t be new. “They have to have been handled and shaped.”

City’s needs must be taken seriously at Queen’s Park
W
ith the swearing-in of Premier Kathleen Wynne earlier this week, and the naming of her new cabinet, Torontonians are right to expect our city to be taken seriously at the highest levels of Ontario’s government. Wynne, the MPP for Don Valley West since 2003 and before that a Toronto District School Board trustee, is the first Ontario premier from Toronto since the NDP’s Bob Rae in 1990. It was Rae’s government that proposed subway lines for both Eglinton and Sheppard avenues, a plan killed by the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris, which was elected in 1995. Maybe this time things will our view be different. Wynne’s cabinet has 27 members, five more It’s time for than there were when Dalton McGuinty prorogued the proprovince to put vincial legislature in October. And the representation from Toronto first Toronto is significant with nine of its members representing Toronto ridings. Adding another five from the surrounding 905 municipalities, that’s a strong voice at the cabinet table for the Greater Toronto Area. Wynne, who served as both an education and transportation minister in McGuinty’s governments, has first-hand knowledge of both those files and we can expect her to make both of them priorities. While the education issue is province-wide, transit is at the top of Toronto’s list. Wynne has recognized that by naming Toronto Centre MPP Glen Murray as minister of both transportation and infrastructure. They understand just how important Toronto’s transit is to the GTA and to the economic health and success of the province, and we’re expecting results. And those results start with funding. Metrolinx must present a report to the premier later this year on how to pay for the $50-billion Big Move transit improvements planned for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Metrolinx is holding consultations with residents as is the City of Toronto’s Feeling Congested meetings, the last of which took place last night at Metro Hall. At the Metrolinx meeting in North York recently, attendees said they wanted construction started and were willing to pay more if that’s what it took. See our story at http://bit.ly/XtlAKq Wynne and her cabinet need to hear that message and have the courage to put Toronto first. newsroom

I would encourage every taxpayer in Toronto to get involved with the Feeling Congested campaign asking for public input on the future of transit in Toronto. We must speak up to make sure that special interest groups and lobbyists do not deflect the burden entirely on to the lowly citizen taxpayer. Let’s make sure all those with interests in the city pay their full share. Torontonians have always been paying for transit. Not only with our property tax increases, but every time we use the transit system. It is now the turn of the 905 area residents who get to use our public facilities for free to step up and be counted. Currently, the only way this can be achieved is through provincial taxation and adequate funding for the TTC. So go to the public meetings or go online and make yourself heard. Chris Belfontaine
If not term limits, then what for city council? On Monday, Willowdale Councillor John Filion gave up what for him had been something of a calling – the chairmanship of the Toronto Board of Health. He’d been at it for awhile; but for three years, he’s been the face of public health since amalgamation. And there’s no reason he shouldn’t; after all, aside from a notable gaffe involving food carts, he’s done a pretty good job. And it’s not against the rules. But what if it were? And what if it were against the rules for Filion to even be on council as long as he has? Both are questions that have come up recently around city hall – not about Filion in particular, but about councillors in general. Should councillors be able to sit on boards and committees, term after

term after term? Should councillors be allowed to sit on council for as long as they can get elected? Toronto’s Executive Committee voted to look into the former; and two first-term councillors are hoping to convince their colleagues to look at the latter. The Executive Committee question might get answered. But it’s unlikely the motion coming forward from councillors Mary-Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson to look at a three-term limit for councillors will pass. There are too many councillors in Filion’s position. If they
voted for term limits, they’d be voting themselves out of a job next election. It’s too bad, because the heart of the McMahon/ Robinson motion is not an ageist attack on long-inthe-tooth politicians. What it is, is a recognition – and repudiation – of a sad reality: that Toronto council has become a Balkanized mess, where old political feuds routinely drown out intelligent debate on important issues. Wiping the slate clean of those old feuds by removing all those old politicians would undeniably be effective. As with many effective plans, it would also be a little anti-democratic. But democracy in municipal politics has always been an imperfect thing. Councillors can coast back into office on name recognition, bolstered by their involvement
in local matters in their ward more than their actual performance at council. Fundraising is easy for an incumbent and tougher for a challenger. It all turns Toronto council into an exclusive club. There are advantages. Over the years, career councillors have become formidably skilled in seeing through policies and projects that make the city better. Sometimes, those ugly fights on the floor of council are necessary evils, to turn the majority of council away from one bad idea or another. But council needs to have a long talk about how to both open the doors a bit wider to membership, and raise the level of debate beyond that of a grudge match. If the solution is not term limits – all right. But if not that, then what? The status quo is not an option.

NEWS Help solve the ‘who-dun-it’ on the TTC. Murder in Passing, which was written and directed by Parkdale filmmaker John Greyson, is the firstever transmedia ‘who-dun-it’ series for commuters with silent 30-second episodes appearing daily on Toronto’s subway platform screens and online until March 1. Murder in Passing explores the murder of bike courier Mars Brito in Passing, B.C., and everyone in the town is a suspect. There are visual clues embedded within every episode as well as American Sign Language signs across the 40 episodes that together spell out another clue. There are opera fugues, with clues embedded, paired with each episode, which Greyson said are hugely important for citizen sleuths to pay mind to. Solve the murder before Det. Epicene does and win prizes. “The goal is that people will see it on the platform and be intrigued and go to the website,” he said. “There is a Twitter feed and Facebook updates.” The project will potentially reach one million people a day. Visit www. murderinpassing.com to watch episodes and explore clues.

Kids can audition for Mini Pop ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Does your tween sparkle? If so, she could be part of the next Mini Pop Kids album. Young singers and dancers have a chance to audition for the singing group’s upcoming album. Samantha Kives, a Mini Pop Kids team member, explained they are looking for kids 11 to 14 for an album of popular pop song covers. “If there is a kid a bit younger or older that really shines, we are open to that,” Kives said, adding auditions are open to kids across Toronto and beyond. The first step is a video submission due by Feb. 17. Applicants are asked to make a YouTube video, two minutes or less, and email the link along with a photo and contact information to the Mini Pop Kids team. This is the first time the Mini Pop team has held auditions over YouTube. “Since kids are always on YouTube and playing with that medium, they (Mini Pop) wanted to take advantage of

that,” Kives said. Once the team views the videos, a selection of youth will be offered a live audition Feb. 23 at the Lower Ossington Theatre. There will be six to nine kids chosen for the album, which will be recorded in Toronto this spring. Kives said she expects the album will feature covers of songs by Taylor Swift, The Lumineers, Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen. But even the kids who aren’t picked for the album will have a chance to be featured on the Mini Pop Kids website. “If they are great kids, but just don’t quite make it as
a Mini Pop this year, they can still share their singing and dancing on our website because we will do links to those videos on our website,” Kives said, adding kids who don’t want their video shared can still audition without making the video public. The Mini Pop Kids mission is to empower kids to feel confident, provide kid-friendly versions of today’s pop songs and to encourage kids to sing, dance and have fun. K-tel first launched the original Mini Pops in the 1980s and sold millions of albums. The group was relaunched in 2004 with new kids and new songs. The albums are recorded and produced in Canada.

Did you know? Pet healthcare options are becoming increasingly varied, with many clinics offering herbal remedies, acupuncture, and other homeopathic treatments. The most common recommendations include: probiotics and other dietary supplements with omega-3s for gastrointestinal health and a shiny coat; antioxidants to postpone or prevent cognitive issues associated with ageing. To maximize your pets’ quality of life, the Canadian Health Food Association recommends visiting a local natural health products retailer or veterinarian to discuss alternative healthcare options. –newscanada.com

>>>from page 1 Northern Canada – from Hay River to the Beaufort Sea. During the summer months while Martin worked as a seaman saving money to attend university, his co-workers were mainly Aboriginal Canadians, Inuits and Metis. He would come to learn a great deal about their customs, cultures and beliefs during the summers, but one lesson always stood out. “We would talk about life as we saw it,” Martin said. “We would talk about science and I would talk about this new invention on the scene, the television, but they would talk about the stars and how their elders taught them how to navigate using them.” Therein Martin began to learn about their differences, but he realized, as he would look toward the future, his fellow co-workers never considered what their future held. “These young men would not attend university and none would graduate from high school,” Martin said. “Decent schooling wasn’t there to give them, and this was 40 to 50

years ago,” Martin said, noting that in the decades to pass, not much would change. Martin would approach Craig Kielburger, a children’s activist known for helping students worldwide, to help him build his
initiative. “Since 2009, We Stand Together has been embraced by hundreds of schools across the country, “ Kielburger said. “Ninety per cent of these educators reported an increased aware-
ness of Aboriginal issues among students and 78 per cent felt better equipped to teach their students about Aboriginal issues. “We Stand Together encourages students and teachers to include Aboriginal issues in their everyday discussions.” Even though strides have been made in Aboriginal education, both Martin and Kielburger said the road ahead is still long, with high rates of poverty, crime and suicide among Aboriginal youth. “The Aboriginal community is the fastest growing population,” Martin said. “We need to address these issues and see that Aboriginal youth have the same opportunities as nonAboriginal students.” We Stand Together is a 10-day celebration, from Feb. 25 to March 8, that joins with the MAEI and invites teachers, students and parents across the country to learn about the challenges, as well as the achievements being made. “There is no doubt that education is a part of the answer, not all of it, but a part of it,” Martin said.

YMCA expands fitness centres in east Toronto MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com YMCA of Greater Toronto has launched the most ambitious expansion so far of its health and fitness centres, announcing it will build and open at least two in east Toronto by 2020. What’s being called “the largest endeavor in the charity’s history” begins with a campaign – called Strong Start, Great Future – to raise $250 million. The money is for 10 YMCAs in 10 years, though only five projects, “each in different stages of development” were announced late last month. The new East Toronto location at 907 Kingston Rd., five blocks west of Victoria Park Avenue, must be rezoned before the conversion, but the YMCA is confident it will be. Other locations named in the announcement are on Cherry Street in the West Don Lands, near Spadina Avenue and Queen Street in downtown Toronto and on Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke. The remaining five will be named over the next few years.
