LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL? It’s that time of the year again! School is just around the corner and that means returning members must renew their Key Club membership. The Google Form was sent out at the end of August via email and it will be up on our website (thetechkey.com) until the close of the application process, so make sure to fill it out as soon as you can! We will notify you when we begin collecting dues during all lunch periods through email and school announcements, so keep yourself updated. I am always accepting articles and images! It’s disappointing to log-in to my accounts in the days following an event and continuously seeing empty inboxes. Please be reminded that you don’t need to be an excellent writer or photographer to contribute material. The most important thing is wanting to share your experiences and interest in the events you attended with other Key Clubbers. As usual, if you’re looking for an easy +5 points, flip to the fun & games page for the monthly puzzle. You can e-mail me at Sharon@thetechkey.com and send pictures to image@thetechkey.com. Thank you for reading! Yours in the spirit of service, Sharon Cai Bulletin Editor 2012-2013

I was happy to see that this time more people showed up and that there were more food and drinks. There was delicious square pizza, a lovely cake brought by our lovely Division 9 Secretary Stephanie, and lots of other delectable delights. Several key clubbers tried making s'mores to no avail, but Shirley Fang managed to succeed! =D While I was partly annoyed by all the water guns, I have to say it was quite fun watching everyone chasing after each other. The sand was as hot as always and I feel like I can still feel it burning between my toes. It was a great day to be spent Division 9 Key Clubbers! — Sandy Mui

CHINATOWN BEAUTIFICATION DAY AUGUST 18, 2012 Chinatown Youth Initiatives hosted their 10th Annual Chinatown Beautification Day on August 18 and youth conference the following day. Chinatown Beautification Weekend aimed to raise awareness on topics including environmentalism, sustainability, Asian-American politics, and so much more. The original mission of CBD was “to address concerns that Manhattan’s Lower East Side had become neglected in the aftermath of 9/11.” Since then, CBD has evolved to encourage youth participation in local events and to educate the youth. To learn more about what CYI does and what opportunities they offer, check out cyinyc.org for more information! Video of CBD 2012 here.

On August 18th, hundreds of volunteers gathered in Chinatown to help clean up streets and help register voters. Our Key Club was led by immediate past bulletin editor Holy Cheong, who did a great job with our group. We had tons of fun cleaning up the streets together and hanging out after cleaning our route. We especially had fun clearing lots of cigarette butts from cracks in the sidewalks. However, I was disappointed that the coordinators didn't think that the shovels would be helpful so we had to leave our shovel behind (I found shovels to bee quite useful in quick cleaning after three neighborhood cleanups). The CCBA had great new coordinators who had tons of humor (they told lots of great jokes at 62 Mott Street before and after the cleanup). I had tons of fun at the event and hope to go again next year! — Sandy Mui

CHINATOWN IMMIGRATION AND HEALTHCARE DAY AUGUST 25, 2012
August 25th was the day of the Chinatown Healthcare and Immigration event. Pumping with various genre of music from ballads to K-pop, part of a street in Chinatown was occupied with Key Club volunteers and attendees. Starting from handing out flyers to lining up the elderly, an overwhelming amount of work were thrown at us. However, we never once let our smile drop when we greeted each and every attendee at the event. I would definitely nominate this event as one of the hardest to volunteer for, but it is also one of the most rewarding. — Han-Chang Kim

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES AND FREE GIVEAWAY DAY AUGUST 28, 2012
On August 28, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered for the final event of the summer: Children's Activities and Free Giveaway Day. Key Clubbers were assigned tasks such as giving out fliers and handling the popcorn machine. It was quite a hassle to get rid of the stacks and stacks of fliers, especially the Spanish ones since we were in Chinatown. I found it quite amusing when we gave out Spanish fliers to Chinese people and watched them attempt to read the fliers. After all the fliers were gone, we hung out by the popcorn machine, where we frequently ran out of cups. The line was extremely long and no one wanted to wait nor did they want to form a single file line. However, I think it was worth the wait because the popcorn was delicious. After the event was over, we helped clean up the site by bringing back chairs and cleaning up the mess of popcorn around the popcorn machine. I thought that the event was very fun and there was no better way to spend my birthday than at a Key Club event! :) — Sandy Mui

LETTER FROM LTG HELEN WONG
To the Wonderful Key Clubbers of Brooklyn Technical High School, Welcome to the new school year! And I would like to personally welcome the new members of Key Club! Welcome to your first step to discovering who you are and making yourself into a better person! And to the previous members of Key Club, welcome back! Now I realize that I sound over-peppy, but that generally is what my attitude is. Although this is the start of a new school year, we are almost halfway through our Key Club year. We have been keeping busy over the summer and will continue to stay busy throughout the school year. There will be plenty of opportunities to help out this year despite everyone’s busy schedules! Because some of you may not have met me yet, I should introduce myself to you. My name is Helen Wong. I am your lieutenant governor (LTG) and I am in charge of your division (Division 9’ners!). We are truly the best division ever, with loyal and dedicated members and a combination of all the resources needed to help people out. We are the only division to have the practicality of Manhattan (Division 11), the numbers of Queens (Division 8+ 8A) and a little something special that makes Division 9 special and unique. My goal this year is to make Division 9 stand out and shine like the hidden gem that it is. We truly have some wonderful spirits in here and I want to help bring them out into the spotlight. One of the things that makes us so unique is the fact that we are like a family. When needed, we keep things strictly business professional. However, our charm is the fact that we all know each other. Our enthusiasm is not only powered by our willingness to help people but our friendship and dedication for each other. I hope that this will be the start of a fabulous year filled with many achievements and landmarks! Yours In Service, Helen Wong ltghelenw9@gmail.com

DISTRICT & INTERNATIONAL NEWS DISTRICT NEWS The New York District now has a Youtube channel (@nydkc) dubbed “NYDKC-TV.” Key Clubbers can subscribe to get weekly updates from Governor Daniel. Check out the videos he has released so far here.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS Did you know that Key Club International is divided into 33 formal districts? A district is commonly defined by a state or nation and tends to match a similar Kiwanis district. Most Key Clubs exist primarily in the US and Canada, but Key Club International is also represented in Caribbean nations, Central and South America, Asia, and Australia.
