LETTER FROM YOUR EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL? You might have seen me around school, at events working alongside you, or more likely, posting on our Facebook group page, but if you still don’t know who I am yet, my name is Sharon Cai and I will serve as your bulletin editor for the 2012-2013 service year. Congratulations to our immediate past bulletin editor Holy for winning the distinguished bulletin editor award at the 64th Annual Leadership Training Conference! But now that I’m back, I’m inspired to make my service year even better than the last. I look forwards to meeting and working with you all to build an even stronger club. Applications for executive cabinet 2012-2013 were sent out over spring break, and I would like to thank all the members that applied on behalf of the executive board. We’re looking forwards to reviewing your applications and scheduling interviews. As May approaches, keep an eye out for walks , the Special Olympics, and more. I can’t wait to read and publish what you guys have to say about them. Induction is just a month away as well, so start saving up for the big night! RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF EVENT CELEBRATE. REMEMBER. FIGHT BACK. The objective of Relay for Life is to not only raise money for cancer research and patients but to also spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, and remember those who lost their lives in a battle against cancer. Brooklyn Tech had the honor of hosting a kick-off event on March 2, 2012 in the school auditorium, featuring a student-made video, a mini Luminaria lighting, speeches from two Tech alumni cancer survivors, and performances by Originize and step-team Organized C.H.A.O.S. Here’s what our members thought of the event:
The Relay for Life kickoff event was very emotional for me. The guest speakers told us about the effects of cancer around the world, and the cancer survivors explained to us the hardships they had to go through. It was very touching, and it gave me a new insight on the pains of cancer and what it can do to a perfectly happy and normal human being. I’m hoping that after this event, people will decide to take action and help the millions out there battling cancer at this very moment. I really hope that we can all work together to find a cure for this deadly disease. Step by step, we can all make a difference for future generations. — Yi Xu

MARCH 2, 2012
When I first saw fliers around the school building about the Relay for Life Kickoff Event, I couldn't help but wonder what the event was about. I never thought of planning to go until one of my friends suggested to and in the end, I made the choice. I was really touched by the stories of people who have or had cancer and the amount of effort people put into helping those who have been diagnosed with cancer. My favorite part was when Tech alumni came up and shared their stories about their own experiences. I was inspired by their determination and optimism because they were two people who fought a lifethreatening disease. After this event, I have been inspired to do something and help those with cancer. — Anonymous
I was moved by all the guest speakers that spoke at the Relay for Life Kickoff Event. When they started tearing up on stage while talking, it made me want to cry, too. It made me want to do something to help this cause, to help provide funding for the program. Their stories touched everyone's hearts. It's a heartbreaking that so many people die from cancer every year and that the death rate is only expected to increase in the coming years. I hope that many key clubbers will raise donations for the American Cancer Society and that everyone will keep fighting cancer! — Sandy Mui
I thought the most interesting part was the speeches made by the Tech alumni because they struggled for a decade but still managed to pull through and beat cancer. Also the live performances were great too! I think Relay for Life is fantastic. It is obviously for a good cause and will bring about results in the near future with the cooperation of students and adults alike. — Hyun Pak

RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF EVENT
The Relay For Life event was very inspiring. I really liked the video at the beginning of the event; it brought tingles down my spine. It was my first time hearing cancer victims speak about their battles and that was one of my favorite parts of the event. After listening to the seriousness of cancer, I am inspired to go to the ACS Relay for Life to celebrate and honor those who have had cancer and are still battling it. — Tina Gao
The Relay for Life kickoff event was poignant and was a very powerful, moving assembly. The speeches made by the alumni cancer-survivors were so detailed and compelling that it had moved me to tears. The people who were in charge of organizing the event and who were part of it were very successful in rallying their audience to believing that there is hope. Although I may not understand what it may be like to be told you have cancer, to live with it, to go through all sorts of harsh treatments and its aftermaths and drugs, I do know what it is like when someone close to you goes through that ordeal. My uncle was always the one who could make someone smile every day no matter how sad he/she was. No one expected him to be diagnosed with cancer but he was and it changed everything. But he’s a fighter and his family and friends will always be there for him. Even though it’s taken me awhile to accept it, to finally realize what cancer can do to someone and everyone around them, Relay for Life really does tell you how much it hurts. But the kickoff event also gave me the feeling that there is always hope, that you should always celebrate and remember those who are suffering, those who survived, or those who have passed away. That no matter what you should always fight back and help those people fight back so that they can win the battle against cancer. That with our help, we can win. — Joanna Zhang

We worked with other Key Clubbers from division 9 to help make the fundraiser at St. Simon & Jude Church a success. Even though all the members were just setting up tables, asking people to participate in the raffle, unloading materials from the vans, and serving the food, I was surprised by how eager everyone was to volunteer. My favorite part of the event, however, was getting a chance to eat the food. — Kaiwui Ye

64TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE Held in Albany from March 30-April 1, 2012, the annual leadership training conference was a chance for Key Clubbers from all over the mighty New York District to come together for a weekend full of workshops, seminars, elections, dances, and awards. It’s the time of year to bid farewell to our old district board and to elect and usher in the new board. Above all, the leadership training conference gave Key Clubbers the opportunity to socialize with one another, to reach out to officers and other clubs, and to celebrate each other’s accomplishments. This year Brooklyn Tech Key Club had the honor of bringing home a grand total of 15 awards, coming in first place for many. Key Clubbers, give yourself a pat on the back. Without the hard work and dedication of the executive board, executive cabinet, and most importantly the members, this could not have been possible. 64TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE
I think the most memorable part of the weekend was Saturday night, when the awards were being announced. I remember I was so nervous, along with Jim and everyone else. I didn’t know if our names was going to be called or not. It was the most nerveracking experience ever and I would not even wish that feeling on my worst enemy. When we won our first award and Jim walked up to the stage to claim it, it set up the mood for the rest of the night. Every time a certain category was announced, we were all filled with anticipation and even though we were still a little nervous, part of us we knew we were going to win. — Cora Man
There are so many words to describe my LTC experience even if I have the vocabulary range of an elementary school kid. If only there was a word to combine fun, tiring, awesome, weird, and helpful, because that would be great to describe the whole trip in general. It's a mistake to think of LTC as a lot of work and hassle, because there's so much more to it other than a long bus ride or a minimal time of rest and relaxation. Meeting new friends and Key Clubbers, getting to know the executive board of 2012-2013, and learning how to improve your overall Key Club experience all come into play when thinking of the good memories I had at LTC. — Alex Mok

MATERIALS FOR THE ARTS WAREHOUSE ARPIL 13,2012 Being a volunteer in Materials For The Arts Warehouse was an exciting experience. The first task that the staff assigned to us was to fold all the colorful fabrics neatly on the shelves. Working patiently and painstakingly in the corner, I did not realize that all the other volunteers already finished their task and moved on to the next one. After I finished folding all my fabrics, I helped others to sort tons of fabric rolls by color. Everyone worked so hard to put all those heavy fabrics in the corresponding places. The seven of us ate a total of 19 slices of pizza in one hour. After lunch, I worked with the girls to sort the beads. They were so dusty! Later I helped another volunteer place hundreds of old music records in boxes. Some of them were dated back to the 1950's and 1960's. One employee told us many interesting facts about these music records and how they are better than all the modern music players. I learned many new things about the materials inside the warehouse and the importance of recycling, reusing, and reducing. Overall I really enjoyed this experience and look forwards to volunteering in this warehouse again! — Shijin Zheng Members spent th eir day sorting be ads and folding fa Thank you to all th bric. e attendees for th eir hard work!
