About Our Cover The Garifuna communities in Belize uphold a significant cultural tradition during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Wanaragua/Jankunu festival, also known as John Canoe, is a cherished Garifuna dance celebration characterized by masked and costumed dancers who gracefully parade through the streets, visiting homes while the rhythmic beat of drums fills the air. This festive spectacle comes to life in Dangriga, Punta Gorda, and Hopkins, where Garifuna drummers and dancers from across Belize converge for a spirited dance showdown.

One of the most captivating aspects of the dancers is their distinctive and vibrant attire. According to oral tradition, the origins of these costumes trace back to a clever ruse employed by Garifuna men on the island of St. Vincent to outwit British invaders. These men disguised themselves as women, catching the British troops off-guard, who had assumed that the men were absent from their villages. The headdress, primarily crafted from cardboard, is adorned with colorful paper, ribbons, mirrors, feathers, and decorative shells. The dancers' heads are swathed in vividly colored fabric, while their faces are concealed behind painted white or pink masks, symbolizing a form of mockery directed towards the British. Dancers wear either women's attire or ribbons that symbolize it, with the cross ribbons possibly reminiscent of the cross-gun belts worn by British military uniforms. Shells are affixed to their knees, and these shells come alive with a lively shaking and rattling that accentuates the rhythm and cadence of the Primero and Segundo drums, adding to the festival's exuberant spirit. Who We Are The Belize Hotel Association (BHA) is a non-profit, non-government organization and Belize’s oldest private sector tourism organization. Its membership is comprised primarily of accommodation providers including hotels, resorts, lodges, condominiums, educational facilities and home-stays with allied members including tour operators and ancillary businesses that service the hospitality industry. The BHA works diligently to support the sustainable growth of member hotels and the tourism industry in Belize through global marketing initiatives, private and public sector partnerships and training opportunities aimed at increased standards and professional service.

Scholarship Fund Belize Hotel Association has established a scholarship program to assist BHA member hotels and businesses employees’, who are unable to meet financial obligations for their child’s high school or tertiary level education. Renewable scholarships are offered each year for

Things to Know Before Country Size

The country of Belize is 8,867 square miles including 689 square miles of offshore cayes.

Population

Independence

Since September 21st 1981, Belize has been an independent country with a democratically elected parliament. It is a member of the British Commonwealth.

The population of Belize is approximately 412,544 comprised of diverse ethnicities including, Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese and East Indian.

Climate

The climate is subtropical with prevailing winds from the Caribbean Sea. The annual temperature averages 27°C/80°F.

Time

Belize occupies time zone GMT-6 or US Central Standard Time. Daylight Savings Time is not observed.

Cell Phone & Service Provider

Be sure to notify your carrier of travel plans; roaming fees can be costly. The best thing you can do to connect online is getting a prepaid sim card in Belize. It will be efficient and it will allow you to connect anytime. We recommend you to get outside the airport when getting to the city in an official phone shop.

The official language of Belize is English. Because of its diverse mix of cultures, Spanish, Maya (Mopan, Ketchi & Yucatec), Garifuna, Creole, German (Mennonites) and Mandarin are frequently spoken. Creole is also widely used.

Packing List

Light cotton clothing is recommended along with a light jacket or long sleeved shirt for cool evenings. For jungle locations, pack long sleeved shirt, long pants and hiking boots. Binoculars, insect repellent, sunscreen, essential medication and hats are essential for tropical travel.

Currency

The Belize Dollar has a fixed exchange rate to the US dollar (BZD$2 = USD$1), and USD currency is widely accepted. Currencies such as Pounds and Euros can be exchanged at most banks. ATM machines are available in major towns and cities. Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Be sure to notify your bank or credit card provider of travel plans before travel.

Visiting Belize Health Services

There are three major hospitals in Belize City (one public and two private). Several private doctors are also available. The district towns and larger villages also have hospitals and clinics. It is recommended that travellers have international medical insurance.

Passport & Visas

All visitors require a valid passport with proof of return ticket. Visitors from the United States, United Kingdom, Central American nations and most Caribbean nations do not require visas for stays less than 30 days. A notarized permission letter from parent(s) not travelling with their child/children is required and will be requested at your departure airport or border, if arriving by land. Contact the Belize Embassy in Washington DC, Belize High Commission in London or the Belize Consulate in Canada for more information.

Vaccines

No vaccines are required for entry.

Safety Basic safety tips should be followed wherever you go in the world. Ask your hotel manager or local guide for specific advice on local areas.

Taxes

Lodging Tax is dependent on the property. The General Sales Tax (GST) is 12.5% on other goods and services.

Tipping 10-20% is the standard gratuity for most restaurants and tour guides. Establishments may add a service charge.

Water

Tap water in Belize is treated and fit to drink, however bottled water is also readily available.

Insurance

Insurance is not mandatory, but strongly recommended. There is a plan of US$18 for a 21 day coverage. You can visit the Belize Travel Insurance website for more information as well as, to purchase it.

Airport departure fees are usually included in the airline ticket. If it is not included in the ticket price, passengers may pay a departure fee of USD$55.50 per person. Belizean residents pay a fee of BZD$35.00. Additionally, a security fee of USD$0.75 is charged for domestic security screening. Fees via the borders with Mexico and Guatemala, are USD$20.00

True to its name, patterns are sewn using a complex counting system. The designs depict motifs from Maya stories, such as the sun, moon, and animals or plants found in their environment. Against the odds, Maya women have kept their language and culture alive, one stitch at a time. While the Mopan Maya language is anticipated to go extinct in a matter of decades, the counted stitches practice is a living gift bestowed by mothers to their daughters for hundreds of years. The Belize Indigenous community organization, the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management, formed Xe'ilto revitalize Maya culture and empower Maya women, starting with modern Xok’bill Chuy fashions.
