The Adirondack chair was first designed and created in 1903 by Thomas Lee. He was having a vacation with his family in their summer house in the Adirondack Mountain in Westport, New York when he realized he needs to have a comfortable chair which they can use outside. So, he gathered 11 pieces of wood from the mountain and made the fist ever Adirondack chair. He offered the design to his carpenter friend named Harry Bunnell who was at that time in need of a source of income during the winter.
Bunnell thought that the design was indeed unique, beautiful and comfortable. He then filed for a U.S. patent for the design without the permission of Lee and created a couple of chairs which he offered to the residents of Westport.
