MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & MANAGING DIRECTOR
STREAMS This year’s Conference has three distinct streams of presentations based on emerging organizational health challenges. If there is one stream that interests you, choose to attend all of the presentations in that one stream. Or mix and match. It is up to you. Deborah Connors President & Managing Director Health Work & WellnessTM Group
At the core of a great workplace is leadership from all levels. Every one of us can step into that role and that’s what you will hear from the speakers at The Better Workplace Conference 2012 (formerly the Health Work & Wellness™ Conference). This conference draws from research focused on creating a better place to work. As a result, we were led to Dr. Robert Quinn, international leadership expert and bestselling author of Deep Change, who will show you how to create excellence in your organization by transforming yourself. It also took us to the UK to Dr. Michael West, Europe’s leading expert on healthcare leadership, who will demonstrate how to continuously be an outstanding leader through the practice of mindfulness. Each year, The Better Workplace Conference helps you create positive change in your workplace by providing global research, practical strategies and the opportunity to learn from peers, and this year’s conference has even more in store! Join us at The Better Workplace Conference and we’ll help you make work so much better!

Dr. Robert Quinn
Create excellence in your organization and increase bottom line performance while ensuring human engagement. In this talk Dr. Quinn will draw on research from the new fields of positive psychology and positive organizational scholarship and from cases in his new book, The Deep Change Field Guide. He will explore an entirely new conception of leadership and explain how anyone can use four simple questions to take themselves and others to a state of optimal influence and adaptation. In short, we will learn how to make transformational change, which means learning to build the bridge as we walk on it.
Thursday October 18 NOON – 1:45 PM Final Keynote Lunch Leadership, Mindfulness and Good Work: Creating a Culture for Business Excellence Presented by Europe’s leading expert on people strategy and named the Top 5 HR Thinker in the UK, Dr. Michael West, Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology, Lancaster University Management School; Senior Research Fellow, The Work Foundation; Emeritus Professor, Aston University.
Dr. Michael West Top 5 Thinker in the UK
Poor leadership costs businesses greatly but good leadership not only makes economic sense, it builds human communities for health. Dr. West will explore the costs of poor leadership for health and well being of the workforce. He will demonstrate in contrast how leadership that develops engagement of people at work is great for business, good for employees and contributes to wider social good. He will describe the practical ways in which leaders can promote cultures of engagement through their behaviour and through encouraging effective leadership at all levels. This presentation will also explore the role of our personal values in enabling us to create organizations that are connected with and enhancing the communities of which they are a part, exploring what it means to create Good Work and Responsible Organizations.

Sponsored by Presenteeism: Recognizing the Cost, Building a Solution Living our Values: A Journey of Renewal
Presented by Eric Pfeiffer, Standard Life; and Dr. Pierre Durand, University of Montreal
Presented by Georgina MacDonald, Vice President, Planning and Improvement, Vancouver Island Health Authority
In many workplaces there may be pressure to avoid taking days off due to sickness or there may be pressure to show up despite being sick especially when it comes to mental health. This is known as Presenteeism. All of this is a hidden fee to organizations that may be at least as high as absenteeism costs. Prevent presenteeism with a set of actions.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) recently embarked on a journey to renew its vision and values. Their approach was designed to ensure that the new vision and values will be of real, strategic, and lasting value to the organization – they had no appetite for a token activity or “paper exercise” without meaning or value. Listen to the story of this journey of renewal from its inception to its completion, including the amazing conversations, insights and surprises discovered along the way. Also discussed will be work that is underway or planned to ensure that VIHA really “lives” its new values every day.
