GLOBAL YOUTH SUMMIT 2021
YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DECISION MAKING
The Global Youth Summit is a unique virtual event designed by young people and for young people. Over three-days, young people, leaders, policy makers and change makers gathered at one place to discuss the challenges facing young people across the world. Scouts and Adult leaders from all over INDIA could watch the live broadcast on social media. It was led by the Big 6 Youth Organizations, including World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, in partnership with the World Health Organization and United Nations Foundation, representing more than 250 million young people around the world.
In the session, YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DECISION MAKING, The Bharat Scouts and Guides had unique opportunity to participate as a Facilitator at the Global Youth Summit on 25th April, 2021. Miss Ayantika Kundu, Vice-Chairperson of NYC had an interesting Question Answer session seeking her views of Youths in a decision making platform. Here’s a sneekpeek into the discussion of Miss. Ayantika and Mrs. Darshana.
1. Tell a little about yourself, your role and briefly your journey to achieving this role. 2. Being the Co-Chair of the National Youth
Committee, why do you feel it is necessary for youths to be present in d e c i s i o n m a k i n g platforms? 3. What have the young people and your organization gained from your leadership? 4. What do you think could be improved at the National Youth Committee to enable young people’s voices to be heard and acted upon? 5. What is still your “wow” moment in your journey so far?
The entire session was moderated by Miss Adele Lync, from WAGGGS where other facilitators like Motunrayo Akinsete, Chinelo Ochu, Pascaline Iyodusenga, Trinita Bambe from Rwanda and Nigeria were present. They also shared their opinions on youth participation in decision making, capacity building, telling the importance on how youths can be trained and mobilized. The overall response was quite appreciable and the audience actively took part in the conversation.
Creating a Better World
K V Deepak Kumar, Adv. Cub Master of Tamil Nadu writes thus:
The Global Youth Summit is an exemplary virtual event for the young people around the world of the big 6 youth organizations, from 23rd April 2021 to 25th April 2021 especially for young people, leaders, policymakers, global brands and changemakers to come together to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted young people in the areas of education, health and well-being, work and employment, and inclusion and inequality.
I was privileged and honoured to represent our NSO as a delegate in this summit. This Global Youth Summit programme featured three main plenary sessions and over 70 interactive breakout sessions across time zones. In addition to inspiring keynote speakers and hands-on learning and professional development opportunities for participants, the Global Youth Summit will also launch a call for young people to apply for funding to support local and innovative COVID-19 response and recovery solutions.
In the Breakout Sessions, there were 50+ expert Speakers, whose inspiration, thoughts, and suggestions enabled and engagedus to work on different aspects for consideration. They have focused on big 6 youth organizations such as World Organization of Scout Movement (WOSM), World Association of girl guides and girl scouts (WAGGGS),World YMCA, World YWCA,IFRC and the Duke of Edinburgh’s international award.
As our founder Lord Baden Powell quoted –“In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed”, this event though is not full of scouting initiatives or organized by scouts but the way this summit went was totally in accordance with this quote and totally satisfied this quote.
I have experienced wonderful moments during the summit, as I have witnessed many young people were doing marvellous actions and all the sessions were informative and knowledgeable. As most of the speakers were youngsters, it prompted me that our Bharat scouts and Guides also provides ample number of opportunities to the young people in organizing and decision-making platforms. It was a good arena to share my thoughts about our esteemed organization in a global forum.
We had plenary sessions for all three days with many breakout sessions which were organized effectively. Some of the topics such as Social action – good for you, good for others; climate action session, budget for youth session and special people’s sports such as Paralympics were thought-provoking and interesting.
Some of my suggestions and feedback from this summit for our organization are :
Creating a Better World
(these are my personal reflections from the summit)
1. Making sure we work for climate action in more ways, I’m firm that we are already saving mother earth at our levels and also working collaboratively. 2. We need to include such topics and activities in our upcoming events and let youth work more efficiently in this regard. 3. We need to ensure that specially-abled children to be given more priority in our organization as we have extension scouting (as per A.P.R.O – II*III). 4. We have to make sure that youth members of our organization are managed financially by providing opportunities to conduct sessions/ awareness on the topic Youth budgeting. 5. Making sure our youth get expertise in soft skills. 6. We need to involve youth in decision making processes and involvement towards decision-making training.
************* Supreeth Balaji from Karnataka state reports that the Global Youth Summit was a unique virtual event designed with young people, for young people. Over the past three days i.e. from 23rd to 25th April 2021, the Summit convened young people from all over the world.
I was overwhelmed when I got to know that I will be one of the delegates representing the Bharat Scouts and Guides for the forum with Rover K V DEEPAK from the Tamil Nadu State.
As a true Scout, I was determined to utilize the fullest of the forum by learning and gaining knowledge from the breakout sessions. Even if the time zones did not coincide, I was excited about the sessions and was determined, that I sat overnight and attended every session. My threeday experience in the forum was really exciting and informative. During the Forum, I had some opportunities to exchange thoughts and ideas with young people from across the world. Each and everyone had different views and opinions on some present problems, some solutions could be reflected in my community, where I can implement with other Young People.
The virtual Summit included 3 plenary sessions with high-profile keynote speakers and 70+ interactive breakout sessions involving a range of Young People’s organization partners across the globe.
In the Breakout Sessions, there were 50+ expert speakers, who interacted and enabled the young people to think on different aspects. This ground-breaking mobilization empowered me to respond to challenges in our communities and to recognize them for their efforts. The partners of the summit inspired many young people including me to take action on the current problems and to serve the community.
Creating a Better World
I experienced that many other Young People are given new opportunities and higher positions in the organization for a better youth point of view (as per other Young People). As the BSG is giving us opportunities in the organization, I was happy to share with everyone in the Forum, that our organization also falls under some of the best ones. The latest climate change has affected many countries' environment and the way of living in this world with dangerous consequences. To use the burnt trees from the forest fires and to convert them to crayons and to distribute to everyone in the district and ask them to paint a tree and when they paint a tree, the Young volunteers will plant those many trees. By this there is no wastage of burnt trees and even sponsorship of the saplings will be easy. Some of these inspirations have given me some more ideas that can be implemented in the NSO. Those are: 1. To work on pollution control in the respective states using the state government’s support. Use the support from the government and try to encourage others to use public transport and to work on waste management. 2. To have a Celebrity Youth Ambassador for the BSG such as Virat Kohli so that even the Growth of the organization will increase. 3. To create a group of young people who are enthusiastic about Science, where the NHQ can provide all the materials and support for making innovations using the ideas from the Young People making them Young Scientists of Scouts. 4. To start a climate change activity pack for all the Young Members of the organization who will follow it when necessary. 5. To create a big virtual network of Scouts and Guides across the country to work on the betterment of the local problems and to support each other. 6. To make a network like Scout. org for the Bharat Scouts and Guides. 7. To open a fund raiser for the development projects across the country and to sponsor every month one Scout or a Guide with the fundraised money for their project, which can be maintained by the National Youth Committee. 8. To train and engage more Scouts and Guides to represent the Bharat Scouts and Guides in National Eventslike Sports, Cultural, and Academic. This can be done by recognizing the Young People with the talent or skill and then giving them support for polishing their skills and representing BSG on bigger platforms.

BSG YOUNG GIRLS ON GLOBAL PLATFORM
TIDE TURNER’S PLASTIC CHALLENGE Shimtilang Kharbuli of Meghalaya
The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge is a Global Youth Movement to fight plastic pollution around the world. It is designed to inspire young adults to reflect upon their plastic consumption, discover solutions to reduce this consumption, and lead change in their homes, communities, institutions and office. This project helps everyone to learn the negative impacts of plastics pollution on nature and man, and will be inspired to change their own plastics used and they can also encourage others.
Entry level is all about exploring ourselves how we can reduce plastics in our lives. At this level we have to only answer questions that are related to plastics that are given in the questionnaire. All the questions are related to usage of plastics in our daily lives.
At Leader’s level we have to actually create awareness among the society, our friends, family, neighbours etc. talking to them about plastics and how we can deal with plastics for our better future. For example, organizing a talk show with our friends and family, a virtual exhibition related to plastics and discussing about how we can reduce plastics along with actions.
Champion level is all about creating awareness on plastic wastes management, how we can recycle plastics instead of throwing them anywhere around us. And also taking a pledge with our friends and family members to try our best to make this world a better place and make it plastic free. For example organizing a session on plastic segregation, organizing a committee that can make sure the waste management is working.
Taking a look at all levels and all the challenges that were divided under those 3 levels, I’ve realized that as an individual and as members of the group, we have learned a lot. We may not realize it while doing it but when it comes to summarizing all the work that had been done, many thoughts start flowing into our minds that can’t be expressed just by writing a sentence or paragraph. This tide turner’s plastic challenge was indeed a good experience for me and my team as a whole. Taking a small initiative, and being a part to make this world plastic free is a great feeling that can’t be described. The overall challenges were quite interesting to perform as we got a chance to communicate with different people around us. I hope we as a
Creating a Better World
team will be able to reach our goal. We have also reached many schools to take up this project. Because of this project I was able to join the national youth summit tide turner’s plastic challenge 2020, the virtual delegates for tide turner’s challenge.

ALL GIRL PANEL
Deepanjali Pramanik, SPC West Bengal
The Her World Her Voice/WAGGGS partnership has been going since 2003. Each phase has supported Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world, from building membership and capacity in our Member Organizations to enabling girls and young women to make their voices heard at international events such as the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP).
A key component of the Her World Her Voice Programme is to provide more opportunities for the engagement and meaningful participation of girls and young women (GYW) in the programme itself. As part of the demand driven grant allocation process of the Her World Her Voice Programme, WAGGGS is
Creating a Better World
forming an all-Girl Panel that will contribute to decision-making and the allocation of grant money. The purpose of the Her World Her Voice Girl Panel is to share decision-making with the girls and young women the project seeks to empower, and to demystify the grant-making process, so that WAGGGS can make strides towards being more responsive and accessible to girls and young women themselves.
I am really honoured and privileged to be a part of this DDG Girls Panellist. During my training period I got the opportunity to learn many things. The fund to support our member organizations to implement projects that will empower and engage girls and young women from diverse backgrounds. The Her World, Her Voice programme is currently running across five countries – Rwanda, Nigeria, South Africa, Mexico
and India. It's really fun to work with WAGGGS in this project. I believe that every girl has the potential to change this and I would like to empower and equip them to do so. I would always be there for every girl and any girl. I would like to be the Change, See the Change, Plan the Change, Make the Change and Share the Change . I hope one day we would together be able to make this world a better place for girls to live in and make this project Her World Her Voicesuccessful.
