EDI TOR’S LE T T ER The World has changed & I can’t hug you for a while and 2 meters apart does not mean I don’t love you. It’s with great sadness that I have to write this intro, in my lifetime, I never thought I would be writing it, and I hope and pray that I will never have to write such a thing ever again. Early on in this pandemic and lockdown, we began to discuss as a team about what photography would tell about this moment in time and how it would be recorded by us, the visual storytellers, never did I think that photographers would feel guilty about picking up their cameras and taking pictures. The feeling of guilt and the worry about the social media stress that might backlash from the taking photographs has made many pro and amateur photographers worry about shooting what they see and whether it was right to be picking up a camera as they go out on their daily walk, and unfortunately many have not. This was highlighted and confirmed recently when I was a part of a 4 pro photographer podcast, and I was the only one, the dinosaur in the group, who was documenting, even if only in a small way, my daily life and view. The 3 other photographers, talked about as pro photographers shooting every day it was nice to have a rest, and my heart sank. How many of us photographers have simply laid down our cameras and their passion for photography because of worry about social feedback, I don’t know, all I can encourage you to do, is from the moment you read this, pick up your camera and start shooting whatever you see. This issue about Lockdown Life, is probably not the last one we do, but it should be seen as a celebration of family and humanity, as well as a time that we will all look back on with different memories & different emotions, it will be impossible to forget. I hope this Lockdown Issue will also inspire you to pick up a camera and record these times a little more than you have done so far. I would hate to think that the most significant global event in my life would only be captured by normal people on normal cameras or smart devices that may never see beyond their social circles.

John Askey I don’t mind the stylisation of the postproduction- the hard edges, vibrance and sharpening going on, I think it matches with the theme and the style. Great Expression, great model, again using the specularity of the white against the black, sharpening all those elements do work in this case. I probably would encourage you to use a wider lens to just distort things just a little bit more, but as it is- a really good image. If you’re looking to take it up a gear from Certification, I’d probably tone the arms down more and give a bit more of an edgier light to him to add in with the whole scene. He’s a bit over-lit in the bottom part, it’s almost as though it looks like your flash is coming up from below at almost the same intensity as it’s coming in from above or from the right-hand side, it just over-lights the flesh which is a bit of a shame on the arms but still a great image.
TOP 20 Live Critique Comments May 2020
Paul Swinney Loving the black and white and the clouds, you know I’m a black and white photographer anyway, through and through. I love it! Great use of dragging the shutter speed, nice and sharp, beautiful presentation. Into the Craftsman category.
Peter Hildebrand I love the design, to be honest, I hope you’re going to get a big canvas done of this because it is superb! Again, just picky, I suppose just the brown on the stem there in the bottom right-hand corner but besides from that, easily a Craftsman image.
Graham Butcher Wonderful macro image- love it! I love the water droplet on the eye or nose. The colours are bang on! I often talk about it being oversaturated or the colour is boosted too much. But I think you’ve nailed that image! And again, another Craftsman image!
Robert Szentannai I’m loving the tone, I think this is where the lightness and brightness and the dodging and burning needs a little bit of help, especially where the faces merge together. I would just say we’re missing a bit of information in her hair, just a little bit. Just go in and add a little bit more whiteness and brightness and specularity just to bring it up. It’s a bit hot on the leg as far as the light is concerned. If I’m looking at the worst thing, it is the light hitting the guys leg and the light hitting the guys arm, that’s the thing that my eye is going to the whole time and I’m just being distracted and I should be staying around those face masks and the hands on the rope and then the sexuality. I shouldn’t be looking at an arm and a leg before anything else. So that’s the only reason its held back in Certification, change all that, correct it and everything else with it and it pops straight into the Craftsman.
Mandy Millford I love the expression! It’s superb! Perhaps a little bit too much space on the top. What you’ve got to remember is that in photo critique we can crop it in any way we want and that’s what you’ve got to learn is that you accustom crop to make the image come alive so you’ve either got to do things in post-production to fit into conventional sizing if there is such a thing, except in print or you can crop it to the way you should be doing it so again doing all the finish and everything else like you’ve done. It’s beautiful on the fur, lovely and bright, good blacks and whites but at the final second before you’re using it for competition or qualifications or the likes of photo critique I would just trim off that top just a little bit more because it is one of those images that need to be filling the frame. You’ve done a good job on that, it’s an image where it works and it fits into the high end of Certification even wobbling into the Craftsman in fact with that little bit of trim on the top.
Ian Woodhouse Great subject. Love the use of gel lights, beautiful expression. I think this is where all the styling works together. I mean, the tone on her, the smoothing of the skin works for this image. The kind of luminosity that’s coming off it works well. If I’m being picky, possibly the luminosity of orange in the background, possibly a quarter of a stop, a third of a stop, a little bit too hot, just knock it back just a touch. You can even do that in shop but otherwise on the verge of a Craftsman image.
Anastazia MacCorgarry I love this image and it is on the verge of Craftsman! I just don’t think the white border is doing anything for it. I think, make a smaller image, put a small white keyline around it and put it on a black background, this would pop off a page. Or you could make it much smaller on the gallery wall, so in other words, make a much smaller print on the big white border if you are going to present it, it has to be done to enhance the photograph, not just to add a little bit of finesse, it’s about what is best for this image. I think he looks great, and the lighting’s good. I’d like a little bit of that white light just to spill onto that right eye just that fraction, and again perhaps just controlling the exposure just a little bit more in the camera because it feels like you’ve burnt out but then recovered it back in the likes of post or RAW but otherwise, I’m loving all the styling going on, really really good. As for Certification, again with a little bit of presentation and a little bit more control of that light, it’s going to move more into the Craftsman.
Graham Butcher I love it! Great quality of black and white photography. I’d prefer to see just a little bit of that horizon line above, I know you’ve cropped specifically for it but because you’ve left that little bit of sea on each side of the top left and right, my eye is being distracted towards the infinity and I want to see where it meets the horizon. So I’d need about half a centimetre above the image to see the skyline or the horizon line to make it amazing. It’s still a Certified image but without that little bit of crop, it would be very, very close to a Craftsman image.
Sara Sadler Wow! I love it! We look at things on a level playing field, whether it’s a mousetrap or whether its eyes coming out of a treasure box. I love it, and I want to look at it more, I want to go in and see it and it’s a good photoshop job and its good blending going on. There’s a little bit of a strange white line going down the side and the trouble is I want to go in and look at it so you get kind of criticised on that to some extent but I’m loving the textures- it’s a good solid image. I’m trying to decide whether it’s a Craftsman image or not, to be honest, that’s the only thing I’m questioning. I’m in a good mood today so let’s go with Craftsman, well done.
Alan Butcher Loving the seas and the skies, great panoramic view, I think the only thing, even though it fits in Certified, to bring it closer towards a Craftsman- I’d give it a little bit more of a presentation to add a little bit of edge around it as well as to add a little bit of a stroke or keyline around the image.
Annette Willacy Loving the use of the light from behind, it fits into the high end of the Certification, its really sharp and it’s got some fantastic detail going on and just enough space around the image- the almost square composition makes it great, as I saidstrong Certified.
Anastazia MacCorgarry I’ve got to be honest, I love it, it’s kind of old-school and it works. But you’ve uploaded such a small file that I can’t go in and look in close at it. But again, I love it and I think it’s very, very close to a Craftsman image.
Michael Mills I love it, I get it, I can see this big up on a wall in a gallery, I love it! It still only fits in the Certification. There are a few little elements, there’s specifically an ice mark going over the middle flower, that really is annoying me and with the likes of photoshop I would go in and re-touch that out. Also, I’m not sure if the elongation of the composition works, I’m not sure if it needs a little bit more space on the edges, not quite going square but just allowing a bit more edginess. But it still fits in Certified.
Iva Kostova Loving the lighting on the eyes and I’m not sure if you’re aware of the Australian artist, or is she American? I can’t remember but she used to paint big eyes and these images where I see such brightness on the eye and such a softness overall on the skin and all the mastery kind of effect reminds me of those big eyes in some ways. I would just tone down the shoulder on the girl, quite a lot in fact because it is distracting from such beautiful eyes and beautiful lips. The hair has been handled fantastically as well and the stylisation overall is good. It’s just you need to learn to control this highlight on the arm and the shoulder more than anything else and then it’s a different photograph, so as is, it’s a Certified image- it’s a strong one, but with a little bit more control on the light, you’re looking at a master Craftsman image in the making.
Robin Hudson Beautiful, loving the tones more than anything else and I hope it’s massive on a wall in a house somewhere. This is the kind of tonality that most homes can use to bring it alive so good Certified image.
Dominic Byrne A very strong image, loving the architectural element, well seen, well shot. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been to the Gaudi Cathedral which is amazing in Barcelona, that has a staircase in fact, very very similar to this. But well caught, nice exposure, very dramatic overall, the only thing I would probably say is there’s a little colouring of blue in the top of the inner circle, I know it’s the natural light but I’d probably go in there and dilute or remove some of that blue because I think it’s spoiling the actual elements but it fits into the wobble between the Certification and Craftsman.
Des Glynn Loving the tone, loving the mist, loving the white vignette coming up from the base. Pin-sharp, it’s beautiful and I hope you’ve got this massive hanging on your wall at home. It fits into the Craftsman without any trouble.
Vahid Sabet Loving the dramatic use of the lighting, perhaps a little bit more of the detail, just a little bit on the top of the head or even just in the eyes. Keep the light away from the nose that you’ve done but it’s a strong Certified image.
Sara Sadler Liking the concept, seen another image similar to this over the past few weeks. Liking the idea and liking the tone and it fits into the high end of the Certification, wobbling onto the Craftsman elements as well. Not convinced that the key line that you’re using around the image is doing any benefit but the rest of the post I quite like.
