Letter From The Publisher
s the last of the colorful leaves fall to the ground and the chill of autumn greets me in the morning, I know the time to celebrate the birth of my Savior is near. Christmas carols are playing, the fireplace is burning, and the fragrance of sweet cinnamon fills the air. I am convinced there is no greater place to celebrate the holidays than in my beautiful East Tennessee home surrounded by family and friends. As Thanksgiving is upon us, I am especially grateful to God for the beautiful blessings in my life and for the ability to do the work I love. This year, I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have self-funded our newest publication, Farragut Life, for four issues - one full year! I want to offer a special thank you to our advertisers, readers, and subscribers who make this publication possible. We couldn’t do it without your support! As you read this edition of Farragut Life, you will learn that Santa has outsourced all of his work to the finest tradesmen and women in Farragut, so be sure to support these wonderful local businesses this year. While planning your holiday festivities, you’ll want to attend the 44th Annual Appalachian Ballet Company’s performance of the Nutcracker ballet. It is a beautiful experience with a live soundtrack performed by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
When you hang your stockings by the fire with care, fill those with the World’s Softest® Socks after you learn about the amazing history of the Crescent Sock Company. Christmas is a time for giving back to others. You will read how the Monroe Life Magazine’s Muscadine Balloon Fiesta at Tsali Notch was a tremendous success that benefits Casa Monroe. You will also discover how Wears Valley Ranch, a ranch for children whose families have been destroyed by divorce, drugs, abuse or neglect, is breaking ground for construction on a new chapel. In this edition, you will also learn about the USS Farragut Destroyer that returned home in November after her 8-month deployment. The ship was named after Admiral David Farragut, born just a few miles from Campbell Station and admired for his bravery in the face of battle in the United States Navy. There are many more wonderful stories in this edition of Farragut Life. This season, be sure to make memories with your family, enjoying all of the wonderful holiday events our Farragut community has to offer. Wishing you warm blessings this holiday season,

the class of an elegant Christmas dining table with the natural and rustic beauty of the outdoors. All of our photos were framed by hundreds of rows of beautiful evergreens, creating a natural, intimate aisle to the table.
For some couples, planning their wedding or engagement photographs in winter is the perfect way to slow down, gather together and celebrate. Since 1983, Bluebird Christmas Tree Farm has allowed friends and families to do exactly that. Settled in the rolling hills of East Tennessee, Bluebird Christmas Tree Farm is a wonderful place to capture the timeless scene of a winter wedding.
Bluebird Christmas Tree Farms has sold Christmas Trees since 1988. Every year, they open their doors to families who can choose and cut their own tree, have a tree cut for them or select a pre-cut tree from the grounds. With several different types of trees, you are sure to find a perfect, fresh one for your home.
JoPhoto traveled out to Heiskell, Tennessee, to photograph an inspiration shoot to find ideas for an engagement, wedding ceremony or family event. These photos are sure to spark your holiday creativity for home, farm and winter wedding ideas with festive red and green accents.
In addition to selling beautiful trees, Bluebird Christmas Tree Farms also provides mistletoe, garlands, Fraser fir wreaths and swags for decorations. After selecting a tree, stop by the gift shop and pavilion to warm up by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider. Pick up a jar of local jam, honey or sorghum for the perfect stocking stuffer.

Seasonal Culinary Inspirations Written By Deron Little Food Photography By Ben Gibson
Our good friend Winter is quickly approaching, bringing along with him his trusty pals: Bitterly Cold Temperatures, Cutting Winds, and Frigid Snowy Days. We know this group of friends all too well. For many of you, winter weather makes you want to remain indoors until spring comes. Fortunately, we live in a world with food. Food is our friend — always has been, always will be. So when you’ve been out in the frosty air all day long and the chilling winter temperatures cut to your core, there’s nothing better than a warm bowl of chili. Next to jazz music, there is nothing that lifts the spirit and strengthens the soul more than a good bowl of chili.
Seasons Award Winning Chili Ingredients: 2 tsp olive oil 2 med onions (chopped) 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 lbs beef sirloin (cubed 3/4in-1in) 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes 1 can dark beer (12 ounces) 1 cup dark coffee 2 cans tomato paste (6 oz each) 1 1/2 cup beef broth 1/2 cup brown sugar
3 1/2 tbs chili sauce 1 tbs cumin powder 1 tbs cocoa powder 1 tsp oregano 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp coriander 1 tsp salt 4 cans kidney beans (15 oz each) 7 oz chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (chopped) 1/2 cup fresh cilantro (chopped
1. 2. 3. 4.
Start by heating up the oil. Cook onions, garlic and meat until brown on medium high heat. Add tomatoes, beer, coffee, tomato paste, chili sauce, brown sugar and beef broth. Add spices, 2 cans of kidney beans and chipotle peppers. Reduce heat to medium low (closer to low) and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. **Test the meat after 1 hour. If it is falling apart, reduce the heat and continue cooking.** 5. Add 2 remaining cans of kidney beans and simmer for another 30 minutes. 6. Add the fresh cilantro just before serving. Mix well. 7. Serve with sour cream and fresh baguette! Enjoy this winter with family and friends, creating memories around a dinner table. Chef Deron Little CEC Seasons Innovative Bar and Grille

The turn of the 19th century brought the Industrial Age to light. It was during this time in 1902 that a group of gentlemen sitting around the local railroad depot decided they wanted to do something to provide jobs for the people in their community. At the time, hosiery mills were increasingly popular, so they decided to open a mill and call it “Crescent”. The name was created based on a regular train route that passed through the town called the “Crescent Route”, spanning from Cincinnati to New Orleans. 40 24

One of these gentlemen, James L. Burn, was a southern railway agent and one of the first Presidents of the company. It was through his initial leadership that the mill survived the test of time. His desire to create a family-centered company has been passed down for four generations, and Crescent is still a family-owned and operated business. Over the years, Crescent has faced many threats to the business. During World War II, the company feared a shutdown because of the cotton rations being enforced by the government.
community could not survive. Jack’s efforts were successful, and Crescent continued operating during this critical time. Later in February 1966, another incident threatened the company. At this time, third generation owner, William H. “Bill” Burn, had taken over as President of the company. A fire broke out in the mill, consuming most of the plant. The fire was devastating, but the employees of Crescent rallied together to clean and salvage as much as they could from the mill. Bill Burn was friends with a man in Athens
who also owned a hosiery mill. He generously allowed them to use his mill during the second shift, which allowed Crescent to keep the company in business. It was then rebuilt by the fall of 1966. In 1986, Bill Burn gathered all of the current employees who worked at the mill during the 1966 fire and celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the fire as a way to honor those special employees. That tradition is carried on today by his daughters, Sandra Boyd and Cathy Allen, who currently own and run the mill. It is now called “The 20 Year Club, and all employees (current and past) who have worked for the company for at least 20 years are invited to have lunch together. In fact, this past year, 40 current employees and 45 retirees attended. They gathered together to celebrate the success of the company since that devastating day. This is a true testament to the values and family atmosphere of the mill. Long time employee, Jack Ewing, will celebrate 50 years at the company next year. He was plant manager for many years and currently works as a consultant part-time, sharing his expertise in the business with Sandra and Cathy. In September 2002, Crescent Sock Company celebrated their 100th Anniversary. It was a great celebration where 100 blue and white helium balloons were released to signify the 100 years of service. There were exciting games and a picnic lunch for the employees and their families. A luncheon at their local club was also held where Burn family and friends, suppliers and dignitaries, including Congressman John Duncan, were invited to come celebrate with Crescent. They were both wonderful events that celebrated 100 years of serving the community, providing jobs, and creating the highest quality socks available. In 2015, as the company continues to survive, Sandra and Cathy hold the same desire to pass down the intrinsic values of the company established by their great grandfather in 1902. Crescent’s commitment is to provide jobs in the community in a family atmosphere. They believe in supporting and honoring the hard
work of all of their employees. They feel strongly about the values of the company, and they desire for every employee to be treated with dignity and respect. Sandra states, “Crescent wouldn’t be Crescent without our employees. We are all on a first name basis here. We truly care about every person who works with our company.” They try to reward employees for their hard work in many ways. One way they do this is by having a “Fun Day” every year – on the clock. On this day, employees eat pizza and play games such as horseshoe, volleyball and bingo. They also have a cakewalk and a pie-tasting contest to celebrate all of the hard work they put in every day. The community as a whole is also important to Crescent Sock Company. They support local community organizations, such as the United Way, The Arts Center, the E.G. Fisher Public Library and The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum among others. In addition, they hold fundraisers for The March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. They also donate socks to those in need. On September 11th, 2001, Crescent Sock Company sent socks to policemen and firefighters in New York City. They also donate socks to churches and non-profits in the community. They enjoy giving back to their local community. For years, Crescent Sock Company has been known as one of the country’s best knitting

mills. They stress quality in the production of all of their socks. They have developed and produced socks for many well-known companies such as Columbia Sportswear®, Life is good® and SmartWool®. Several years ago, they decided rather than just manufacturing for private label brands, they would create their own brand of sock. It is here that the World’s Softest® Sock was born. You can purchase these socks online at: www.worldssoftest.com. Locally, you can find some of these styles at Greeks Bearing Gifts in Athens, but they are also sold in stores throughout the country. They are constantly flooded with orders and are known for their superior quality. For over 110 years, Crescent Sock Company continues to give back to the community during this special holiday season and all year long. It is truly a gift for the Burn family to be able to carry on the legacy of serving their community and the people living in it for four generations. This Christmas, as you “hang your stockings by the fire with care,” fill them with the World’s Softest® Sock, and know that you are getting more than a high-quality sock, you are supporting a company deeply invested in their community and the people in it, now and for generations to come.

Performs the 44th Nutcracker Ballet December 5 & 6 December 11 & 12
Written By Caroline Duvall Photography By Richard Calmes
While most people are preparing to decorate and greet Trick-or-Treaters or planning their Halloween costumes, the classical dancers at the Appalachian Ballet Company in Maryville, Tennessee, are focused on the holiday season. Rehearsals for The Nutcracker have already begun, and this year marks the company’s 44th performance of the traditional holiday play. There are currently 115 dancers in the production, with 36 musicians scheduled to play during the performance. The Appalachian Ballet Company (ABC) employs the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to perform the live soundtrack to The Nutcracker, as well as a live choir to give the audience a complete visual and auditory experience. “We are proud to bring that to the community,” says Amy Morton Vaughn, current artistic director of ABC. “The live music enhances everything. We try and provide an orchestra as often as possible when we have performances.” Vaughn is also the sole proprietor of ABC’s dance school, the Van Metre School of
44

Dance. Vaughn collaborates ABC and the school with the Clayton Center for the Arts at the Maryville College Campus, their resident dance company. She works closely with Jan Valenti, the production director, and with Katherine Dorner, the current business manager. The entire ABC staff and dancers prepare over the entire season to perform The Nutcracker ballet. This holiday season, the audience will get to see all that work pay off. Vaughn began dancing with ABC when she was twelve years old, where she had the advantage of dancing under Cheryl Van Metre, the company’s founder and director. Vaughn moved away from Knoxville for a few years, returning and taking a teaching job under Van Metre when she was twenty. Van Metre soon began to assign her company responsibilities and allowed her to manage rehearsals. When Van Metre decided to retire in 1997, it was a smooth transition for Vaughn to take over the program. “She really showed me the ropes,” said Vaughn, who is now doing
the same thing with her daughter, Kylie Morton Berry. Kylie, who got married last Fall, also dances with the Appalachian Ballet Company. Vaughn is confident that she will have “a smooth transition into leadership over several years.” Kylie will dance the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy this year, partnered with Australian dancer Aaron Smythe, who appeared on “America’s Got Talent” this summer. Smythe has also danced with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and received a bronze medal for his senior piece at the 2014 International Ballet Competition. “They have a great rapport with each other,” Vaughn says. “They challenge each other to
do better, to balance longer and turn faster. The audience can sense that kind of energy.” In addition to Aaron Smythe, the 44th production of ABC’s The Nutcracker will include high school senior dancer Joey von Clef, who will perform the parts of the Toy Soldier and the Chinese solo. Jeff Wolfe will dance as the Snow King, and William Cannon will perform a key fight scene. In the past, Vaughn has struggled to cast talented, professional male dancers who can perform classical ballet. “We usually have one male to perform as the Prince, but it loses the excitement of the lifts.” Vaughn says, “The power of male and female couples adds to the entire performance.”
For all of the power that this year’s Nutcracker performance will bring, with fight scenes and more lifts, it has a softer side, too. Vaughn admits her favorite scene of the entire production is having the choir sing while the snowflake dancers take the stage. One of the most iconic moments in the entire Nutcracker ballet will be accompanied by the beautiful voices of a live choir, setting the perfect scene for the entire audience. In addition to the main performances, the ABC offers school matinees for East Tennessee and Kentucky Students to attend on December 3rd and 4th with complete curriculum guides. Vaughn works with the middle and high school teachers to use

the ballet as a teaching point for students, pairing the ballet with classroom discussion on story structure. “It’s a nice way to collaborate with kids who may have never seen a ballet before,” Vaughn says. “They get to come and be a part of the experience and interact with what’s going on in the story.” Through The Nutcracker performance, students will be able to identify the protagonist and antagonist in stories, as well as learn about historical and cultural references. Amy Vaughn will continue to direct the ABC and Van Metre School of Dance, and while Nutcracker rehearsals are a busy time
leading up to the holiday seasons, she and her daughter, Kylie, enjoy every minute of it. Because of the clouds, the balloons could not lift off from the Vineyard. It was a wonderful Fiesta, thanks to all of our dedicated sponsors! We look forward to seeing you there next year!
Families enjoyed the yearly U-Pick harvest and samples of Tsali Notch Muscadine juice and wine. Vendors served BBQ sandwiches, funnel cakes and dozens of fried Oreos to the crowd; there were plenty of activities to keep everyone busy. The Fiesta offered balloon animals, face painting, train and pony rides, a playground of bounce houses and obstacle courses and a covered barn with tables of artists and craftsmen selling their wares. From the center of the Fiesta, guests had a panoramic view of the Muscadine Vines, over 200 acres of scenic farmland and surrounding mountains. Everything You Need To Know About Your Holiday Evergreen Written By Clay Allen
The earliest accounts of chopping down evergreens and putting them in homes date back to the late Middle Ages. At the time, the tradition was mostly centered in Scandinavia and Germany, and it was a way of showing hope for the coming spring season. Other traditions involving plants and the winter solstice have also been documented, almost all of them symbolizing eternal life, life conquering death or some other variation of that theme. Legend has it that Martin Luther, famous theologian of the Reformation, was the first to start decorating his evergreen for Christmas. As the story goes, Luther lit candles and placed them all over the tree to symbolize the starry night under which Jesus was born.
I
t wasn’t until the mid-1800s that the Christmas tree had reached America, and not until 1920 that the tradition was universal. It also wasn’t until then that people started farms with Christmas trees as the sole crop. At the time, nobody was buying the evergreens for gardens, so the farmers cut them for Christmas trees. The industry took off pretty quickly. Many Americans saw the benefits of the cultured Christmas tree.
The trees were more consistent in shape and generally more accessible, but people still got the chance to cut down their own tree. One of the most enjoyable and most important Christmas traditions is the Christmas tree. Even though it has little to
54
FARRAGUT LIFE HOLIDAY/WINTER 2016
do with the holiday itself, it does act as more than a decoration. It is an opportunity for a family to be in a room together, accomplishing a common purpose, and sharing memories. From picking out the perfect tree to bringing it home and decorating it, the family Christmas tree is one tradition that is truly worth keeping. Buttermilk Farms in Lenoir City has been family owned and operated for almost 30 years. Jeff Lockett recognizes several families who return each year to choose and cut their tree, keeping the tradition alive through the generations. Buttermilk Farms will open for the season November 28th, the Friday after
Thanksgiving, and will remain open every Saturday until Christmas. Choose between a hand-pruned White Pine or a beautiful Norway Spruce. Families can tag a tree to pick up later, choose and cut their own or pick out the perfect tree to be cut down. Buttermilk Farms does not use any pesticides on their trees. They also offer tree stands and handmade wreaths. Stop by this season to begin your Christmas Tradition!

To keep your Christmas tree fresh and full of needles as well as keep your holidays safe, Farragut Life has all the tricks you need to know. 1. Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir-type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems. 2. Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don't cut the trunk at an angle or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree. 3. Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go 6 to 8 hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don't bruise the cut surface or get it dirty. 4. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.
5. To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand. 6. Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. 7. Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. 8. The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake. 9. Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With
many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water. 10. Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake. 11. Use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying. 12. Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set. 13. Do not overload electrical circuits. 14. Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed. 15. Monitor the tree for freshness. After Christmas or if the tree is dry, remove it from the house. 16. Go to www.realchristmastrees.org and type in your ZIP code to find a recycling program near you. 17. Never burn any part of a Christmas HEATED FLOORS tree in a wood stove or fireplace.

the community, Wears Valley Ranch has outgrown their meeting hall, which seats 100, and has made plans to build a Chapel to seat over 200 people. The Chapel will allow new opportunities for Biblical teaching, yearly events, and further the mission to help children in crisis. The Chapel is on schedule to open in the Fall of 2016. Brian McDonnell is the Chief Operating Officer at Wears Valley Ranch and says the new Chapel is an answer to a lot of prayers. “We want to see children from difficult situations come to know Jesus,” McDonnell says. “We want their lives to be transformed to include stable, loving
families and give them the opportunity to succeed.” With the help and prayers of generous individuals, Wears Valley Ranch has been able to do exactly that. In addition to providing a home, continuing education and biblical teaching, Wears Valley Ranch offers children the opportunity to learn about responsibility through the care of agriculture, livestock and aquaponics. “It’s exciting to see kids learn how to work with their hands, bringing produce from farm to table,” McDonnell said. “God’s creative genius is on display here in the natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains. It is also on display in these children, as they receive new life in Him.” McDonnell believes that each child that comes to the Ranch is sent for a reason. “We are honored and humbled to have that responsibility,” he says. “We desire to be good stewards of God’s blessing and feel we can best serve our children and visitors at the Ranch and teach them more about our Lord.” Wears Valley Ranch relies on the prayers and support of the community to provide children with a safe place to stay. The Ranch does not accept any government support and has remained debt free for 23 years thanks to the generous donations of the community. Facts and Care of the
Poinsettia
Written by Pam Patterson of Blair’s Bo-Kay Florist & Gifts
The Poinsettia is native to Mexico and was introduced to the U.S. around 1825 by Joel Poinsett. There are over 100 varieties, and in nature, this flowering shrub can grow up to ten feet tall. The beautiful showy colored parts of the poinsettias are actually called bracts, which are modified leaves. The Poinsettia is not poisonous. December12th is National Poinsettia Day. How to Care for Your Poinsettias Light – Place near a sunny window. Poinsettias are a tropical plant and like 6 – 8 hours of direct lighting. Heat – To keep the plant in bloom as long as possible they prefer a temp of 60 – 72 degrees. Try to keep the plant away from touching a cold window and away from hot or cold drafts. Water – Water your plant whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out of the bottom but don’t let the plant sit in water. Check moisture level at least once a day. How To Save Your Poinsettia Jan – March – Keep watering whenever the surface is dry. April – Starting on the 1st of April gradually decrease water, allowing it to get dry between watering and move it to a cool place where the temp is around 60 degrees. 58
FARRAGUT LIFE HOLIDAY/WINTER 2016
May – In mid-May cut the stems back to about 4” and repot in a larger pot with new potting soil. Water it well and place plant in the brightest area where the temp will be 65 -76 degrees. June – Move plant outside in a partially shaded area. Continue to water and fertilize. July – Aug – In early July pinch back each stem by about 1 inch. By mid-Aug the stems should have branched out with new leaves. When this happens pinch it back leaving 3 or 4 leaves per stem. Bring plant back inside and place in bright lighted area. Sept – Continue to water and fertilize and make sure temp stays above 65 degrees. Oct – Put your plant in complete darkness from 5 pm to 8 am daily in order to get your plant to bloom. Place plant in a sunny area during the daytime and
continue to water and fertilize. Nov – Around the end of Nov you can stop the darkness treatment and allow the plant to remain in a lighted area. You should see flower buds around this time. Very exciting! Dec – Stop fertilizing and display your fabulous poinsettia enjoying its beautiful color throughout the holiday season.

The Farragut: Town, Admiral and Pride of the U.S. Navy Written By Caroline Duvall
On November 7th, 2015, the USS Farragut Destroyer (DDG-99) returned from her 8-month deployment. Friends and families stood on the dock at the Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida, to welcome the crew home. They arrived just in time to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th with their families. At 509 feet long and weighing in at just over 9,000 tons, the USS Farragut was commissioned in June of 2006 and can accommodate almost 300 officers and sailors.
The USS Farragut Destroyer is an Arleigh Burke Class Guided Missile Destroyer, detailing the type of Destroyer and the kind of missiles it is built to carry. The ship’s official motto is “Prepared for Battle”. The USS Farragut is the 5th ship to be named after Admiral David Farragut, who was the first Naval Officer to become a Rear Admiral. Born near the Holston River in July of 1801, just a few miles from Campbell Station, Admiral Farragut is admired for his bravery in the face of battle and his commitment to the United States Navy.

The 509 foot long, 9,200 ton USS Farragut Destroyer out at sea.
His service to his country also inspired the name of our city! The Chapel at the Naval Academy in Annapolis has memorialized Admiral Farragut in a beautiful stained-glass window. The window shows a portrait of him in uniform lashed to the rigging on his ship, surrounded in smoke, holding binoculars in his left hand. Along the bottom frame of the window are the words Aug 5 MOBILE BAY 1846. Admiral Farragut became a midshipman in the Navy at just nine years old. He spent several years on the sea fighting pirates and raiders in the Caribbean. He rapidly rose in Naval ranks, serving on the USS Essex and later assuming command of the USS Ferret. During the Mexican-American War, he commanded the USS Saratoga. It was not until he took command of the USS Hartford, however, that Admiral Farragut would be remembered throughout history for his bravery. The Battle of Mobile Bay is remembered as a pivotal point in the Civil War. The Confederacy used the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River to move troops and supplies inland. The Union sought to take control of the port to block the supplies, sending several ships upriver to secure a victory. Mobile Bay was
heavily mined with ‘torpedos’ that destroyed several of the Union’s Naval ships. Admiral Farragut lashed himself to the rigging of his ship so he could see above the gunsmoke and ordered his crew to sail the USS Hartford forward, despite the risk. “Damn the torpedos!” is his famous line in the heat of battle, and the Union fleet took control of the port just hours later. His success at Mobile Bay became the defining moment in his Naval career. In December of 1864, Admiral Farragut became the first U.S. Officer in history to be given the title Admiral of the American Navy. He was the leader and commander of all Naval forces until his death in 1870.

He is memorialized in the Naval Chapel, and his legacy lives on the active ships in the U.S. Naval fleet. His birthplace will be forever remembered in our town of Farragut in East Tennessee. I would like to dedicate this article to the brave men and women serving our country. To my father, Lieutenant Commander Jeff Hoadley, and my brother, Midshipmen First Class William Hoadley. Thank you for protecting our freedom.

Joe Guy HISTORIAN
Daphney’s Thanksgiving Daphney stood in line with the other black children as the white people stood and looked at them. She had been sold before, when she was about eight, way down in Charleston in South Carolina. That day was burned into her memory, the day she was taken away from her Mama and her brothers, Samuel and William. Daphney had cried and cried, and before the white man bought her and put her in his wagon, Mama kept talking to her, telling her to be a good girl, and to say her prayers and to remember who she was. She kept saying, “Don’t cry, now, don’t you cry now,” like she would see her the next day. But Daphney had not seen her family for two years as she was taken up through Georgia and now to Athens, Tennessee. When she was little, in Charleston, she and her family had been owned by the Edwards, and Daphney was taught how to be a little nursemaid to the Edwards’ babies. She liked it, getting to hold and change the babies and getting to play with them. It made her feel big, like Mama. Daphney was real smart, so smart that one of the older Edwards girls had taught her how to read and to do arithmetic. But Mama told her to keep quiet about it; a slave wasn’t supposed to know how to do such things. Daphney had only disappointed Mr. Edwards once, when she dropped some eggs she’d been told to gather. He’d hit her across the face with a stick, and she still carried the scar from his anger. This morning, she had read a paper that the slave seller was writing and saw that the year was 1860 and that the place of sale was Athens,Tennessee.

FARRAGUT LIFE HOLIDAY/WINTER 2016
She did not know exactly where that was, but she knew she was up above Charleston a long ways. Without Mama, she’d had to get on and learn to be a big girl, and so now she only cried late at night when she dreamed of Mama’s face.
The slave seller had gotten her up early this morning and given her a clean dress, and he told her to clean her face and hands and to fix her hair. She did like she was told and was brought into town in a wagon with some other slaves. They were made to stand in the dirt in front of the old brick courthouse, and one by one they were brought up to stand on a box to be bid on. Like before, Daphney had to do her tricks: show her teeth, jump up and down, smile and let the white people look her over, just like the slave seller told her to do. Good people will buy you if you look happy, he’d said. He walked around her as the white people
“Hidden History” gawked at her, telling them what a good girl she was, how she was no trouble a’tall and that she was ten years old and already a trained nursemaid. A man named Peck bought her, put her in his wagon with his wife and took her way out in McMinn County to his farm. It was a big farm, and there was a big mountain she could see from the Peck house. Mrs. Peck told her it was called Starr Mountain and that Indians used to live in the valley. For the next five years, she cooked and cleaned, worked in the garden and fields and sometimes was even a nurse when someone got sick. She would sometimes be sent to nearby houses with medicine, which she carried in a small basket. A war came, and both gray and blue soldiers roamed up and down the valley between the farm and the mountain. Soldiers paid them little mind, except when they were hungry, and Daphney would cook them a little food, too, if there was any. Most of the time, Daphney took care of the Peck children. Sometimes, when the little ones would crawl up into Mrs. Peck’s lap, Daphney thought of her own mother. She tried hard to remember her family, never wanting to forget their faces or the sounds of their voices. But with the years going by, it was harder and harder to do. Mrs. Peck was a kind woman, and sometimes Daphney would tell her about Mama and how much she missed her. She was about fifteen when Mr. Peck came to her one day and told her she was free. The war was almost over, and
slaves were all going to be freed, he said. Besides, times had gotten so hard that he couldn’t afford to feed his own family, much less her. He told her she could stay with them if she wished, and since she had nowhere else to go, she did. But there was something about Mr. Peck that seemed to change, and one day in November, he called her to the house, where a strange man was sitting in a wagon. Mr. Peck told her she had been a good girl, but she must go with the man in the wagon, whose name was Chestnut. She took her few belongings, placed them in her basket and climbed in. Mr. Chestnut seemed kind, and he talked to her as they rode along in the cool November afternoon. He asked her about her name and how old she was, and then he asked her about her family. He just smiled and listened as she talked about Mama and William
and Samuel. She talked and talked, sometimes unconsciously touching the scar on her forehead, and before she knew it, the wagon was coming up on Mr. Chestnut’s farm on the Connector Road. Daphney guessed it was not ten miles from the Peck farm. Mr. Chestnut smiled and pointed to a little house out in the field and told her to take her things there. He told her that a negro family was already living there, but they would not mind her staying, too. In fact, he said, she might know them. Daphney walked toward the house with her bag. She saw two boys outside, and then she saw a woman holding a pot step into the doorway. She stepped closer and saw the pot drop from the woman’s hands. “Daphney?” said Mama. “Oh, my sweet, baby….is it you, Daphney?”
But Daphney could not speak. The basket had fallen from her trembling hands, and for a moment, she thought she was dreaming. Tears rolled down her cheeks as Mama and William and Samuel ran to her, embracing her. (Many thanks are due to the family of the late Mrs. Dorothy Hitchcock and her personal memories of her grandmother, Daphney Chestnut Melton Howard.)
