The furniture industry is abuzz, talking about how TV’s popular series featuring Chip and Joanna Gaines, are launching a lifestyle collection --- a collection that makes it easy for homeowners to duplicate and be inspired by their fabulously chic style. Knoxville Wholesale Furniture, the leading furniture retailer in this region, has exclusivity to feature their trademark furniture. It’s available now for purchase in KWF’s beautiful, expansive showrooms located in West and North Knoxville. This is reportedly the largest display of the Magnolia Home gallery in the mid-South. “We’re super excited to share the couple’s enthusiasm for a lifestyle promoting home and family,” states Tim Harris, President of Knoxville Wholesale Furniture. “This is a highly anticipated compilation and we are extraordinarily pleased to bring this to this area as the exclusive retailer.” The gorgeous, eclectic furniture features furnishings for every room as well as decorative accessories with unexpected flair; hand-finishing with paint brushes; and or pops of fresh colors. Kelsey, Alyssa & Kathryn Bingham Photos by Joe & Kathleen Atkins

Letter from the Publisher Summer is finally here and what better way to enjoy it than with good food, great music, and even better friends. I always love watching my kids run around barefoot in our backyard and I feel truly blessed to live is such a beautiful place like East Tennessee. From family picnics to outdoor concerts Farragut is full of events that the whole family can enjoy. The Summer season here in East Tennessee is unlike anywhere else with the Smoky Mountain National Park in our backyard. We’re just a short drive away from breathtaking mountain views and the walking trails are a hikers dream. This year, in August, the National Parks Service is celebrating their 100th Anniversary. We have included a story about what our local National Park is doing to help celebrate this monumental occasion. Summer is also wedding season. Be inspired for your summer wedding by the patriotic photo shoot that Photographer Ben Finch worked on with other caterers and wedding planners from the local area. All of the collaborators used creative ways to use the classic red, white, and blue to make a wedding scene that was both romantic and playful. Don’t forget to check out our story on the summer Lawn Chair Concert series. Every summer the Lawn Chair Concert series brings together local musicians and artists to perform live at Campbell Station Park. This year many new up and coming bands and singers will be performing. As always, a special thanks to all our Farragut Life advertisers, readers, and subscribers who have made this publication possible.

en Finch of Finch Photo recently collaborated with Castleton Farms to create an amazing wedding photo shoot inspired by the 4th of July. Castleton Farms, established in 2009, is the premier wedding venue in East Tennessee.

12

FARRAGUT LIFE SUMMER 2016

The shoot continued with several pictures of the couple with an American Flag, facing each other in a vintage rowboat, and sharing a kiss on a beach bicycle. For the inspirational reception, Cakery Bakery featured a tiered cake decorated in strawberries and blueberries, paired with ice cold lemonade in mason jars.

The photo shoot took place at the Woodland Gardens. With a stone aisle surrounded by tall trees strung together with lights, it is the perfect place to say “I do”! Ben shot Rachel wearing a beautiful, sleeveless gown accented with an ornate, jeweled belt. Her style was created by Rachel Ridner and Kelly Schmid, and her hair was styled by Bangs and Blush.

Bliss, Coldstream Market and All Occasions Party Rentals collaborated to turn Woodland Gardens into a patriotic reception, including a cozy couch between antique wing-backed chairs. Carnations sat in vases of glass bottles and refreshments were served on a reclaimed wooden table. Creative invitations were provided by Liddabits Products.

The couple kissed under a natural wooden arbor decorated with white fabric and surrounded by lit candles. Sarah’s bouquet of red peonies was matched by the flowers hung over the arbor, arranged by The Katelier Florist.

Ben’s children, Brennan, Knox and Molly Finch, are featured with Rachel and Joey, and added some family fun to the inspirational shoot. Through the collaboration of Finch Photo, Castleton Farms, and many others, the photo shoot was a big success!

Smokies Centennial Challenge

HIKE 100

To honor the first 100 years of the National Park Service and launch into the next century, the Park Superintendent has committed to hiking 100 miles of park trails during 2016 -- and he invites you to join in on this challenge!

Whether you are new to hiking in the Smokies or have seen most or all the trails in the park before, they encourage you to set a goal of reaching 100 miles during this special year of celebration, between January 1-December 6, 2016. You may hike any 100

miles of maintained trails in the park. Your miles can include everything from front country nature trails to the extensive trail network in the backcountry. You may hike the same trail repeatedly or different trails; you may hike them solo, with a group or even with a guide. The goal is to inspire you to explore and enjoy the many benefits the park has to offer. Explore the park website for information about hiking safety, trail recommendations, weather, road and trail closures, and the park’s trail map. If you plan to include overnight trips in your hiking plan, be sure to obtain a reservation and permit for all overnight stays in the back-country. When you are ready to take on this challenge, plan your hikes and get out on a trail! Download a mileage log, create your own log, or purchase a ‘Hike the Smokies’ log book to keep track of your miles. The

‘Hike the Smokies’ log book is available for $1.00 at bookstores in the park or on the Great Smoky Mountains Association website. After you have hiked 100 miles this year, send an email to let us know! You will then receive information about the Hike 100 Celebration on Thursday, December 8, 2016 to receive your commemorative “Smokies Centennial Challenge - Hike 100” pin! For more informaiton and to check out a variety of gifts that you can buy, visit the park’s website at www.smokiesinformation.org

It’s a reminder to never stop wandering – to escape, explore, and discover. EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK.

Every detail has been considered to make the Pendleton feel like a home away from home: it even features a lighted handle and doorbell. Knoxville, The Force Awakens! Written By Phil Roulier

T

his group of sinister looking villains may look like they epitomize the dark side of the force, but behind the masks lie some of the kindest hearts imaginable. We are speaking, of course, of the 501st Garrison, an international organization of Star Wars costumers that dedicate a portion of their time and earnings to bring an extra flair to events and charities in their communities. Star Wars has always been a pop culture icon since its debut in 1977, and with the recent reboot of the saga in theatres, the 501st plans to use the surge in publicity in the best (and of course since we are talking about villains, we mean the Worst) sort of way by hosting and collaborating with charity events all across the state of Tennessee. But don’t be fooled by their selfless agenda; the 501st Legion only accepts costumes of Star Wars villains. But let’s be honest, the villains almost always have the coolest looking costumes, so we can hardly fault them. We recently spoke with David Hester, former leader and active member of the 501st’s

40

FARRAGUT LIFE SUMMER 2016

Midsouth Garrison, which represents all of Kentucky and Tennessee. David (or Lord Vader as he is known by his close friends and family) was kind enough to take some time from conquering the galaxy far far away to speak with us about his organization. Q: So David, What is the goal of the 501st? A: The 501st is a grass-roots group of Star Wars enthusiasts that has grown into an international family. More than that, it’s an example of what a handful of passionate fans can do to transform a hobby into an established and respected means for giving back to the community with no budget and a lot of sweat equity. Q: How did you get into costuming? A: I joined the Legion in July of 2011 and at first it was about having a really cool costume, but my motives have evolved into the enjoyment of seeing the faces of fans light up and helping others realize their own dream of being a real-life Star Wars character. Star Wars is a big part of my life and I probably don’t skip a day without it running

through my mind at some point. It’s certainly very satisfying to know that we’re helping raise millions for charity every year. We’ve been called the bad guys who do good things. There is certainly some sense of irony behind an evil Empire who is hell-bent on doing charity work, but when it comes down to it, the villains always have the cooler costumes. Q: What must one do to be a part of the Midsouth Garrison? A: Our website, 501st.com, has a great page listed under “Resources” which points aspiring members to various message boards we call “Detachments.” These forums are open to the general public and offer a venue for fans to interact with established members as far as getting tips, finding materials and finetuning their costumes for membership. Q: What is the most satisfying part of the job? A: It’s certainly very satisfying to know that we’re helping raise millions for charity every year. The 501st is a huge testament to what any group of people can do when they put their passion into their work.

Our events essentially break down into three categories: Charity, Promotional and Casual. Charity events give us a good cause to get into a plastic suit and sweat it out for a few hours, knowing that it will benefit a sick child or raise awareness for a form of cancer. Promotional events are primarily to advertise a new Star Wars product or service and typically are run with Lucasfilm’s involvement. Casual events are the ones where we just want to cut loose and have fun — we may not even be required to wear a traditional approved costume in many cases. Nearly all of the 501st members are working people. For some reason, folks think that we are either Lucasfilm employees or some kind of paid full-time costumed entertainment. In reality, we give up a lot of our personal time to bring Star Wars to life for others. A loose poll recently showed that the majority of our members joined the 501st simply because they are fanatical about Star Wars and wanted an outlet for that fandom. Owning and building an accurate costume was only the third reason given, after a desire to do creative charity work. So beware… Your OB-GYN might be an Imperial Officer and your teacher might just be Boba Fett!

Pictured above: during the interview, foolish reporter Phil Roulier asked if David Hester (Darth Vader) sympathized with the Rebel’s cause. David found his lack of faith disturbing. Pictured left:David Hester (Darth Vader) posing with Eric Wilson (Boba Fett) at the Knoxville Zoo.

Q: What was the coolest thing you have gotten to do in costume? A: I’ve done several cool things but I would have to say standing center stage at the Ryman Auditorium with Weird Al Yankovic while he performed his song the Saga Begins was one of the coolest.

hen Lou Lovingood, a 63-year-old grandmother from Sweetwater, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, she didn’t shed a tear. Those came, she said, after receiving the first letter from her insurance company denying coverage for proton therapy, a type of radiation treatment that targets a specific location while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue and organs. “It was the first time I had cried after all of this, after I got my first denial,” said Lovingood, who has now been denied twice and is appealing to her insurer again. Lovingood had lumpectomies in both breasts after her diagnosis, and completed her 33rd and final proton treatment Thursday at the Provision Center for Proton Therapy. She was the center’s 500th patient, and used the spotlight during a special

44

FARRAGUT LIFE SUMMER 2016

celebration to share her insurance story. “My diagnosis today could be yours tomorrow,” she said. “We want the best level of care for everybody. If there is something better that’s out there, we should have the right to it. We have to stand up and use our voice to say, ‘You can’t treat us this way.’”

and is not necessarily better than traditional radiation therapies.

Lovingood, co-owner of Sweetwater Insurance Agency, used savings put up for retirement to pay for the treatment. Others, she said, may not be so fortunate. For the past two years, Provision has unsuccessfully prodded the state Legislature to get involved in getting proton therapy covered. The most recent bill called for proton to be covered by insurers at the same levels it covers other radiation therapies.

It also now has pencil beam scanning in all three of its treatment rooms, giving physicians more-precise capability, said Bill Hansen, vice president of business and strategic development at Provision Health Partners.

Insurers have argued that the more expensive treatment isn’t cost effective

Provision Center opened in January 2014 and is treating about 80 patients a day with proton therapy. More than 44 different cancers in various locations have been treated.

Looking ahead, Provision plans to continue to expand into different disease sites and offer more trials with some other newer treatment techniques. Lovingood, for example, is the first person the center has treated for bilateral breast cancer.

A member of the Provision Health Alliance, the Center’s goal is to help make proton treatment options available for as many patients as possible. Their 90,000 sq. foot facility and the surrounding Dowell Springs campus provide a nurturing oasis for patients as they receive treatment. With a wealth of resources, comprehensive care and knowledgeable specialists with years of experience, the Center serves as an ideal option for patients in need of cancer treatment. The Provision Proton Therapy team is comprised of leading specialists, clinicians and experts with more than 50 years of physician and imaging oncology experience. Northshore Elementary School

Wax Museum Brings History to Life! Amelia Earhart, Davy Crockett, Sacagawea... we have all heard these well-known names before. From the history books of our youth, we learned of their achievements and importance to our country. At Northshore Elementary, however, these famous people from the past are brought to life in a fun and unique way through the 4th Grade Wax Museum.

Caroline Monroe, Jacob Murphy, Braden Butler, Julies Justice

The Wax Museum is an annual project where students are asked to research a historical character and write a report. Students must also write and memorize a speech, but to add a dash fun to the assignment, on the day of their speeches, they are encouraged to dress up as their historical figures and bring props. Beloved heroes from the past, like Pocahontas and Daniel Boone, head to the school’s library to deliver their speeches. According to Joy Smith, a teacher at Northshore Elementary, the Wax Museum is “a great way for the students to see historical figures come to life and learn a little history!” And indeed, this is one school activity that surely encourages a fondness for those who helped to make our country great.

tudio 135 has had incredible success since its doors opened in 2014. Owners Jessica and Kevin Moore plan to add two more stylists in the coming months since they are continuing to grow so fast. One of the newest members of the Studio 135 team is Knoxville native Brittany Mullins. She graduated from the TN School of Beauty and has over 10 years of experience being a hair artist. People often come into the salon with a picture of a celebrity whose hair style they wish to have. When asked which hairstyle clients ask for the most, Brittany says Julianne Hough. Hough, an actress who has been in several movies and television shows such as Dancing With the Stars, has a blonde bob, a hairstyle that is very popular. Many clients also bring in pictures from Pinterest to show their dream look. Brittany says her favorite part of being a stylist and working at Studio 135 is connecting with her clients. “I love the relationship with my clients and making them feel beautiful.” Sometimes going to a new hair stylist can be nerve wracking, but Brittany’s friendly personality will put all your concerns at ease. Brittany is trained in all aspects of hair styling

S

ummer is the time of year for visiting with friends, live music, good food, and enjoying the Tennessee sunshine. One place where you can experience all of these is at the Lawn Chair Concert Series. Held at Campbell Station Park, this summer concert series features local bands performing live at the park. The event is free for everyone. People are welcome to bring their lawn chairs, so they can enjoy this year’s great lineup of artists.

Blond Bones

There are three different concert events this summer, the first was June 10th at 6pm. This concert featured performances by Adeem the Artist, Carolina Story, and Guy Marshall, a truly amazing list of artists for the first concert of the summer! The second concert of the summer will be July 15th at 6pm and will also be at Campbell Station Park. It will feature “some good ole’ fashioned laid back Americana folk vibe” with musicians such as Blond Bones, Dixieghost, and special guest Roger Alan Wade. Blond Bones, made up of Americana folk duo Christian Barnett and Joe Rebrovick, offer a wide range of music influenced from surprising sources such as Bach and Bill Evans. Barnett is studying jazz guitar at University of Tennessee and Joe graduated from UT with a degree in theatre. The name Blond Bones “started as something to simply perform under.” Now it allows this unique group many collaboration

52

Dixieghost

opportunities. “At any time you may experience an eight-piece ensemble,a band, or a solo performance. After experiencing success as an “electrified folk-rock band” Dixieghost has redefined themselves and gone back to their roots. Gone are the electric guitars and drums, what’s left is the original songs and vocal harmonies of Jason Hanna and Justin Nix. This duo has a rare musical chemistry and their songs are reminiscent of “the

everybodyfields woven with acoustic instrumental work in the vein of Allison Krauss and Union Station and Blue Highway.” Special guest Roger Alan Wade is an exciting edition to an already amazing group of artists. Wade has written songs for and performed with many famous household names such as Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., and Johnny Cash. Fans say that “he brings a unique tenderness to

his songs whether they be southern rock or ballads.” The third and final concert of the summer will be August 12th at 6pm and the Campbell Station Park. This concert series ends with three amazing performers; Sparkle Motion, Kelsey’s Woods, and Briston Maroney

Roger Alan Wade

Sparkle Motion is a Knoxville born group that has a very rough and emotional sound. They remind listeners of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. They have played live at many familiar places in Knoxville and are sure to be an amazing performance to end the summer concert series with. Another band that calls Knoxville home, Kelsey’s Woods, is a three or more piece Americana/ Roots band. This band features four-part male harmonies and pay tribute to a past time with their country, folk, and sometimes rock and roll sound. They play about love, loss, heartbreak and “the age old tradition of finding salvation in a whiskey glass.”

Kelsey’s Woods

The final performer is Briston Maroney. A singer/ songwriter from Knoxville, Tennessee, Maroney made it into the top 30 of American Idol 2014. He is one of the youngest artists on the lineup this year, his first album Reasons to Shake was released last year. He is sure to please any country music loving listener and is the perfect artist to close out the night and the concert series. For more information on the Lawn Chair Concert Series and the musical artists that will be performing, visit their Facebook event page at www.facebook.com/ lawnchairconcertseries.

hen Lt. Colonel Tom Heemstra decided to refuse the unlawful testing of the Anthrax vaccine on both him and his men, he did not know that standing up for himself and others would result in forced retirement. That didn’t stop him, however, from fighting for integrity and serving the men under his charge. Inspired by the challenges set before him, he instead created his own company to help cultivate, develop, and support fellow leaders in a variety of programs. It was the summer of 1998 when the issues began. A mandatory anthrax vaccine was introduced, and Dr. Heemstra, a F-16 Fighter Squadron Commander, began researching both the laws regarding 54

FARRAGUT LIFE SUMMER 2016

mandatory vaccines as well as the vaccine itself. Unsure of the negative side effects and absolute compliance, Dr. Heemstra enlisted the help of civilian anthrax expert Dr. Meryl Nass for help. The five hour meeting, in which 20 pilots and 30 personnel participated, confirmed his suspicions-- this was not a beneficial nor safe vaccine. The actions of the Department of Defense, who tried to prevent the meeting, only further escalated the situation. This would be only the beginning of a long and difficult process. Dr. Heemstra states in his testimony to the Governmental Reform Committee, after six people had already died from the shot, that the vaccine is, “unethical, unsafe, and ineffective on the battlefield.” These statements were further backed by the FDA’s involvement with the

distributor of the vaccine, Michigan Biologic Products Inc. According to an article by Dr. Meryl Nass, The FDA claims that the sole provider of the vaccine only passed 6 of the 31 tests. As a result, outdated or contaminated vaccines were shipped out from 1998 through 2000. Reports have estimated as many as twenty thousand soldiers have been harmed as a result of the vaccine. Dr. Heemstra utilized the Whistleblower Act to testify before Congress his concerns over the faulty vaccine. He still remains in forced retirement, however, since its enactment in 2000 at Ft. Wayne. During this time, he has flown commercially for a major international airline, and received the idea for his current business ventures during his doctorate studies in Strategic Leadership. He never stopped fighting to improve the lives of his fellow men despite

his treatment in the military, and decided to follow another one of his passions, inspired by his own struggles. Today, Dr. Heemstra demonstrates his heart for the community and his skill in leading in a different way: by providing new leaders with the tools to help them succeed. After penning several books on the topic of leadership and the Anthrax vaccine, he became a keynote motivational speaker, and designed and developed his own organization. He is the CEO and Founder of the MACH5 Leadership Solutions, a profit company that provides several different services to the community, including several nonprofit projects such as the Sanctuary, STAR Quest, and Creator’s University, which rely on donations. A deeply religious man, he does all he can to give others the strength to shine and achieve their dreams.

Influenced by his own stresses and difficulties, Dr. Heemstra started The Sanctuary, a retreat center for those wounded both emotionally and physically. “From my own experience dealing with grief and loss,” Dr. Heemstra said, “I learned that without the right place, and without loving supportive people to surround us, events and choices can negatively cascade.” He believes that leaders should not only be cultivated, but supported through the tragedies and challenges of life. The Sanctuary is offered to wounded PTSD soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq and their families, burned-out or emotionally compromised pastors and their families, couples with deep marital strain, and leaders in need of an escape. The program is staffed by pastors, psychologists, and others to bring their patrons back to God and to a place of healing. It relies entirely on donations to make it affordable and accessible to wounded warriors in need of financial and psychological assistance.

Dr. Heemstra also provides a STARQuest program for troubled youth. With the epidemic of cheating and deviant behaviors, he states that the culture of education needs less spending on curricula, and more on character development. Dr. Heemstra, “President Theodore Roosevelt once said ‘to educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.’” The program teaches students to respect and better themselves individually, and to work with others as a team, based on the leadership he himself received as a fighter pilot and commander. This developmental program is backed by Bright Star Sponsors who pay for students designated as Rising Stars.

The Sanctuary provides special counseling and has unique resources available for groups or individuals with needs including: wounded soldiers (and their families) retiring form Iraq/ Afghanistan, including special resources for those affected be PTSD, burnt-out or emotionally wounded Pastors/Missionaries and their families and a Couples in Crisis; Relationship Retreat.

56

FARRAGUT LIFE SUMMER 2016

Another unique program offered to the general public is the Creator’s University, nestled next to Norris Lake. This nonprofit university is not dedicated to degrees such as business or liberal arts, but the study and utilization of creativity in the modern world. Recognizing creativity as the key to innovation, this academically independent campus teaches problem-solving, the arts, and the ability to think for oneself. “Many adults don’t think of themselves as creative,” Dr. Heemstra says, “I wanted to give them the tools to express themselves better and facilitate their creativity.” The university is a refreshing change from the archaic ‘factory worker’ classroom that most educational systems rely on today, and has broad applications both in the modern job market and in our troubled schools. They host both student and community seminars ranging from two hours to two days in a variety of subjects, and like all nonprofit programs listed, rely on donations. You can donate to the non-profits on the company website, mach5ls.com. Dr. Tom Heemstra is currently looking for benefactors in order to continue his work in supporting and blessing the community through these highly beneficial non-profit programs. His passion for creating and developing leaders shows in every action he’s taken. He’s not afraid to speak the truth on difficult matters, and hopes to teach other individuals to stay true to their code as well, fostering the new and supporting the weary on life’s difficult and winding journeys. A true leader, he inspires others to achieve their dreams and gives them the tools to make it possible.

Farragut baseball continues to amaze everyone after walking away from the state tournament ranked 5th and with heads held high. They played Arlington in a double elimination match on Tuesday, May 24th, and lost two to five, and came back with a vengeance, and win, against Ravenwood stealing the show seven to four. However, they got knocked out in the next round by Stewart’s Creek losing by only five runs. Senior, Carmello Venero, states,” It wasn’t our goal, but making it that far was quite impressive”. The Admirals came in defending their second place title after a heartbreaking loss to the Hardin Valley Hawks last year. The Admirals almost always make it to the tournament and have a quite illustrious history, including eight state championships.

This year’s CQ is called, “The WayMaker” based on John 14:6, which says, “…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The WayMaker is a production featuring video games, robots and impressive on stage explosions. The story line features both good and evil characters in conflict with

one another. It uniquely parallels the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, ultimately demonstrating that anyone can have the opportunity to know Jesus in a personal way. While the extreme artistry and beautiful visuals are impressive, the ultimate goal of CQ is to help children learn to worship, understand the Bible through great teaching, make new friends, but most importantly discover who Jesus is and what he has done on the cross.

“Taking Care of the Communities We Live In”

Celebrating 60 Years Of the Clayton Homes Legacy Sixty years ago, Jim Clayton had a vision for his community. In 2016, despite tremendous growth, that vision still remains. Clayton Homes specializes in the creation of providing affordable quality homes to the public. Homes offered by the building, selling, financing and insuring company range from traditional on site built homes, modular homes, manufactured houses and “tiny” homes that can be personalized to more commercial college dormitories, military barracks, and apartments. As Jim Clayton’s son and now Chief Executive Officer, Kevin, relays best, it is foundational to take care of those around you stating that today the company is still proactive in “taking care of the communities we live in.” Clayton Homes, which was founded in and is now headquartered in Maryville, Tennessee, is celebrating a major milestone this year at the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. Here, a highlight of the company’s growth and history will be shown in the form of statistics displayed in an exciting animated video. Not only will attendees at the meeting get a brief lecture on the highly successful past of the company, they will also be given

an opportunity to interact with new homecustomizing technology that has yet to be revealed to the public as showcased in the Patriot, a featured home, at the event. Testifying to the truth of continuing to integrate the responsibility of taking care of the neighbor into the company, Clayton is partnering with Hope for the Warriors®. Hope for the Warriors® is a non-profit organization that provides services for wounded war veterans focusing on those who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. This organization was recently recognized as one of the top ten charities that gives to veterans by CNBC. Kevin Clayton says that Clayton Homes recognizes and appreciates the sacrifices made by veterans and is happy to partner with Hope for the Warriors® to ensure that veterans do not face any battles alone once they return home. Clayton Homes is committed to donating $100 dollars to this organization every time a Patriot home is sold.

Clayton Homes can boast about many accomplishments through their years of business. Year after year, the quality of Clayton Homes improves and is now recognized as a company that provides modern, energy efficient housing options for thousands of homeowners across the country. Although growth has taken place, Clayton Homes’ foundational roots have not been shaken. These original values will continue to guide the company to new heights in the coming years as many purchase a Clayton House and call it Home. Stats from 2015: • More than 15 million visitors went to a Clayton website. • Those websites had more than 97 million page views. • Clayton built more than 34,000 homes. • There are more than 13,400 Clayton team members nationwide. • Since 2009, Clayton has created nearly 4,000 post-recession jobs.

Take control of your personal health Why Choose Chiropractic

Everyone benefits from chiropractic. The repeated actions of daily activities, such as standing, walking, running, texting, typing, reading, and lifting places stress on your spinal cord. This stress results in increased pressure on associated nerves, which in turn will cause pain and other healthrelated issues. Make an appointment today if you have been suffering from headaches, neck pain, sinuses, low back pain, leg pain, or numbness or tingling in arms and hands.

The Massage Club

Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind - there are specific physiological and psychological changes which occur, even more so when massage is utilized as a preventative, frequent therapy and not simply mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.

We here in the South West Sector, fought our battles with the County and the Metropolitan Planning Commission as relates to the growth and their allowance of the developments around us. Most of those battles were lost to the developers with the exception of having our own fire and rescue facility at our doorsteps. We won that one after many meetings with the County and Rural Metro. For a little over a year we have had the protection of Rural Metro through the new facility at the corner of Northshore Drive and Choto Road which can provide the Choto peninsula and surrounding communities with rescue and fire protection. Between the management of Larry Wilder, Fire Prevention Specialist with Knox County and Jeff Devlin, Battalion Chief

with Rural Metro, approving the building of this facility, and the professionalism and experience of the men and women that stay on alert at that fire station on our behalf, our comfort level has risen above our expectations. The personnel that provide protection for us are made up of three “platoons”; Blue, Red and Green, of two men each. Although this writer has only been able to meet with two of these professionals they certainly exemplify the others. John Whited, Deputy Chief of the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad, devotes 10 days a month to the Farragut RM Station as well as additional time with the KVERS, which is trained in various rescue missions. John also is a tactical advisor to the Knoxville SWAT team as an instructor. He is a graduate of Farragut High School and has

been affiliated with RM for 27 years. John is married to Pam who is also employed by RM. Chris Caywood has been with RM for 16 years and is a paramedic. Chris is married to April and has 3 children, Caitlyn 19 years old, Hunter 13 and Autumn 12. He is a graduate of Kirby High School in Memphis, TN. John and Chris make up the Blue Team. The other members of the teams are: Arnold Pena and Gary Godfrey both of whom are long time employees of Rural Metro. They make up the Red Team. Wayne Teeters, also a paramedic, and Jacob Riggs make up the Green Team. We welcome these wonderful First Responders to our neighborhood. You might find time to stop by and pay your respects because: “In your most critical hour…we are there.”

Coolsculpting, Surgery, Or What? Written By Dr. Jason Hall

he “Love Handle”. The “Pooch”. The “Jelly Roll”. We all know what it is – a stubborn, unpleasing contour of the lower abdomen or side that makes bathing suits, tight pants, and form-fitting dresses seem like a bad idea. Whatever name we give it, it’s something that makes us want to run for the cover of our favorite baggy sweatshirt. Unless you live under a rock, you know that as of this writing there are about 8,327 (give or take a few) different products or techniques you can try to get rid of this little area, all of them offering a quicker, better, and more affordable solution than the rest. In fact, there is so much “noise” that many people don’t know what to believe and simply quit listening. The assumption is that that nothing really works since there are so many things out there; if you can’t exercise it away, then it’s there for good. If you’re not one of those people and you are still reading – thanks! One of the common complaints I hear often from fit (even skinny) moms is that since children, they have a “pooch” under their belly button that they can’t get rid of. Most women first ask about non-invasive body contouring

(CoolSculpting, SculptSure, etc). Some have even had those treatments performed, with the only reduction they see is one in their pocketbooks. In this subset of women, the problem isn’t fat. The problem is that the muscles of the abdomen have stretched with pregnancy and haven’t “rebounded” to what they once were – they usually do after baby #1, but after the second, the damage is oftentimes permanent. The solution to this is tightening the muscles, not trying to “freeze” or otherwise eliminate fat. This can often be done through an incision similar in size, shape, and location to a c-section scar (even using the old one, if it’s there) and repairing the muscles. The small amount of extra skin in that area is removed, as well. This is what people refer to when they talk about a “mini” tummy tuck. It’s a great option for women who need a little tightening of the muscles of the lower abdomen and have very little extra skin. And, just in case you are wondering – as a general rule, if you’re skinny and your skin doesn’t sag, then you don’t have much (or any) that needs to be removed. That brings me to the second complaint I frequently get – how to get rid of “love handles”. The answer to this question really

depends on what we’re talking about when we refer to “love handles”. For small, isolated, stubborn little areas around the hips, this is where the non-invasive body contouring devices fit in. These areas can be in the abdomen, waist, hips, or neck – the non-invasive devices are finding ways to be used all over the body. The way these devices work is by destroying fat cells underneath the skin – either with cold or with focused radio waves or ultrasound. One of the problems with these technologies, though, is that they are not as predictable as a surgical result. You get treated and have to “wait and see” how things look in 3-6 months. They are designed – and work best – for small areas of isolated fat. These are also the same areas that do best with liposuction. Really, the choice between the two methods is one of predictability and downtime. If you are more concerned with downtime and can live with the uncertainty of the outcome for a few months, the noninvasive procedures win out. If you want a much more predictable result and are willing to put up with a week or so off of work, liposuction is the way to go. While liposuction can – and is – used to rejuvenate entire areas of the body, it is a mistake to try and use the non-invasive methods that way. Non-invasive body contouring should be thought of as “spot treatments”, and not a way to totally change the shape of the abdomen. I see patients in my office who are dissatisfied with results from these non-invasive body

contouring methods, and for two main reasons: they either have excess skin that the non-invasive devices can’t treat or made worse, or they were not good candidates for the procedure in the first place because they had “too much” fat that needed to be treated. Many times, it is a combination of both of those reasons that leave people dissatisfied with the noninvasive body contouring methods. When it comes to body-contouring, I am reminded of a saying my grandmother used to use: “When all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail.”

must be re-tightened surgically. It’s a simple, predictable, permanent solution to a problem faced by many youthful moms. Secondly, non-invasive body contouring definitely has a role in changing the contour of the abdomen. However, I’d encourage all women (and guys) who are interested in this to see a board-certified plastic surgeon first. We can discuss both surgical and non-surgical options, and help steer you in the direction that will best benefit you in the long-term.

As a board certified plastic surgeon, I (along with the other board-certified plastic surgeons in the area) am trained to diagnose your specific problem and discuss possible solutions to fix it. Sometimes these are surgical. Sometimes, a nonsurgical option might be best. Those are decisions you and I make together after talking about pros, cons, and expectations. However, if you go looking specifically for a certain procedure without understanding the indications and limitations, and you see someone who only has one way to fix the problem, you may end up paying for a procedure or service that is ineffective, or, worse, causes long-term problems. The take home from this article is two-fold: first, healthy, active women should know that there is a fix for the post-baby “pooch” – the “mini” tummy tuck. If it’s not fat that is causing the “pooch”, then the muscles

New Farragut Precinct Open for Business It was a spectacular ribbon cutting ceremony for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office new Farragut Precinct Saturday morning, May 7th. More than a dozen surrounding county law enforcement vehicles and fire trucks lined up with lights flashing to receive donations of stuffed animals. The giveaway is a courtesy of the Comfort Bear program sponsored by Lexus of Knoxville, B-97.5 and Stanley Steamer. Lexus and B-97.5 collected gently used stuffed toys and Stanley Steamer cleaned them. Officers use the stuffed animals in traumatic situations to help calm and comfort children. The precinct is located at 11429 Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek (next to Hibbet Sports). Sheriff Jones said it’s important for the Sheriff’s Office to have a high profile in such a densely business populated area to help thwart robberies, shoplifting, and other crimes. The office was donated to the Sheriff’s Office and will be overseen by Captain Robbie Lawson. KCSO will continue to maintain its other office in the Farragut Town Hall building.

The office of Dr. Hall is located off Park West Boulevard in the Cedar Bluff area of Knoxville. For more information visit their website at www.drjasonhall.com

Lee Tramel, Administrative Chief, cut the ribbon with several members of the Knox County Commission and Farragut officials present.
