Letter from the Publisher One of the biggest holidays in the fall that my kids enjoy is Halloween. They love dressing up in fun costumes and Trick-or-Treating with their friends. We talked with Tonja on Grisby Chapel Road about her fantastic Halloween house decorating skills. She describes it as her labor of love, her way of bringing joy to children of all ages. Here in Farragut there are several fall events for children and adults alike. The Knoxville Zoo feautres the Boo at the Zoo Halloween event where children get to dress up in their costumes and experience the Zoo in a fun way. At the Mayor Bob Leonard Park, children can trick or treat at the Freak Friday Fright Nite. Hosted by the Town of Farragut, this event helps give back to the community by having attendees bring a can good as their admission ticket. As the leaves begin to change colors there is no better way to enjoy the breathtaking mountain views than from the basket of a hot air balloon. The National Muscadine Festival in Downtown Sweetwater is an event that you won’t find anywhere else. After enjoying the parade and browsing the local crafters head on over to Tsali Notch Vineyard for the Muscadine Balloon Fiesta. Food, fun and live music are just a few of the things that attendees can enjoy along with a ride in a hot air balloon while raising money for CASA Monroe. As always, a special thanks to all our Farragut Life advertisers, readers, and subscribers who have made this publication possible.

O

ne resident has brought her creativity to the utmost level and turned her quaint cottage into something whimsical and spooky. Tonja has left no headstone unturned when it comes to decorating for this upcoming Halloween season. A quaint white cottage tucked in on the side of Grigsby Chapel Road is adorned with some of the Halloween season’s spookiest decorations.

16

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

The exterior is embellished with hundreds of orange lights, spooky spider webs, hanging moss, a family of skeletons sitting on the porch, and even a witch who looks to have taken a wrong turn and ended up splattered against the chimney stack. Although the house may look haunted, Tonja is hoping to bring a little joy to spectators. “I just like to take what used to be bad and turn it in to something

really fun” says Tonja. “It’s a labor of love really and I don’t count the hours it takes because it is all well worth the joy it brings spectators and people who pass by.” Tonja says that she tries to add a new ornament or decoration to the residence each day. She says she adds a little bit at a time, so that the joy continues for whoever passes by the house all the way up until Halloween.

The latest addition is the skeleton family, although her favorite decoration is the, “don’t drink and fly” sign, helping remind drivers to remain above the influence. Tonja said she wants to keep Halloween a fun and safe night for everyone. Trick-or-treaters are in for a treat this year with an added iconic bubble machine and with weather permitting, a fog machine.

Last year’s bad weather kept some trickor-treaters indoors, but years past Bucca has had around 100 visitors on Halloween night hoping to add to their candy sacks. She even said there even may be an added surprise for trick or treaters this year who visit. With Halloween fast approaching, make no bones about it you’re not going to want to miss this house on your trick or treating route. FALL 2016 FARRAGUT LIFE

s the leaves start to turn, and the days get shorter the Autumn months always bring a feeling of hometown pride to East Tennessee. We remember the illustrious heritage that East Tennessee boasts and there is no better way to embrace this heritage than by taking a visit to The Museum of Appalachia. The Museum of Appalachia is dedicated to helping those who live in East Tennessee better understand the long standing legacy left by the settlers that once lived here. Once a year students take a trip to the museum to better understand this legacy. This day is called Student Heritage Day and is a trip that all the students look forward to. Student Heritage Day is October 6th, 2016 and is one of the most beloved days of the year. It’s a day dedicated to teaching students all about their roots. The Museum of Appalachia has old fashioned food, crafts, and music on display to give the students a taste of what life was like before iphones and ipads came around. To find out more about all that The Museum of Applachia has to offer visit their website www.museumofappalachia.org.

merica’s First Grape, the Muscadine. The wild fruit leaves one with a taste that is nearly impossible to replicate or find elsewhere. The tart but sweet flavor the plump grape produces is one that leaves everyone wanting just one more bite. Although many have fond memories of the fruit, I doubt that many have memories quite like the Muscadine Festival stompers. When this sticky fruit is all over your body in the name of fun, it is quite impossible to forget. From September 23-25, 2016, The National Muscadine Festival will again take place in Historic Downtown Sweetwater, Tennessee, located just 40 minutes south of West Knoxville. The event, sponsored by the Sweetwater Merchants and Property Owners Association, is one that draws in massive crowds every year. Thanks to the five-year support of banner sponsor Aeroflex and other sponsors who value the community, the National Muscadine Festival has no admission charge. That’s right–concerts, entertainment, etc. are free!

September 23–25 22

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

Activities for this year’s event include crowdpleasing live music, a BBQ contest, Miss Muscadine Pageant and a parade. Younger attendees will enjoy a kids zone featuring a unique trackless train open for rides. An art show and activities at Tsali Notch Vineyard, the state’s largest muscadine vineyard that offers incredible panoramic views of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National park, will also take place at this year’s event. A shuttle is scheduled on Saturday to run from downtown to the vineyard and the Lost Sea, America’s largest underground lake, for a small fee. This year, the concert series features artists and musicians from various genres. Performers will be showcased on the Main Stage Bandstand at the Duck Park located in Downtown. All concerts are free, so don’t miss this exciting time. Check out the schedule on the following page for additional details. A crowd favorite every year is the wide smorgasbord of vendors, artists and crafters that attend the event. Come prepared to eat, buy and have a great time finding some fabulous deals. Vendor registration forms can be found online if you have a great product to show off. If you want to shop, buy some local desserts, muscadines or unique artwork, the National Muscadine Festival is the place for you. Quality BBQ vendors attend the festival every year. Check out the website to see more details and pick up a form if you want to enter your best BBQ for a chance to win $5,000 in prize money sponsored by Volunteer Federal Savings & Loans and Langdale Forest Products. Seventyfive lucky guests to the festival can get the coveted “People’s Choice” tickets that allow tasting of the BBQ.

Within the heart of Farragut lies a unique family run and operated embroidery & laser etching gift shop. Their staff makes it a priority for customers to feel like friends all the while receiving the highest quality monogramming, embroidery & laser etched gifts in the area. Gary and Laurae Hathway, in addition to their daughter and General Manager Debby Nohe, own the Embroidery Boutique located in the Kroger Shopping center in Farragut. The boutique is rather new to the area. The quality and experience of this family owned business that started in Boca Raton, Florida in 1989 and is now thriving today in Farragut. The love for all things personal began when Laurae worked as a seamstress in South Florida where she completed all her work by hand. It was in this environment that she first noticed a need for friendly, family-like operation in the embroidery industry with outstanding turn-around time. Laurae’s vision and her love for people led her to open her first

store front in South Florida called Designs For You, Inc. In 2005 the business made a decision to relocate to Loudon, TN to accommodate their nationwide customers. Now the business has settled into a permanent home in Farragut as of 2014. They make it a priority that every customer is 100% satisfied with the quality of every item. They pride themselves on the friendly atmosphere and quick turnaround time, often within a couple of days.

including tumblers and canteens, keep liquids three times colder and hotter than a coozie. These products allow one to forget the bulky cooler and exchange it for a handheld cooling and warming cup phenomenon. Embroidery Boutique is taking the craze one step further with offering laser etching personalization on all Corkicicle products. No more letting someone walk off with your new cup or canteen.

In 2014, when they decided to move the business to Farragut they decided to do business as Embroidery Boutique by Designs For You. The shop is the perfect place for everything personal. They have unique gifts and lots of things to monogram. But what makes them most unique is the fact that they allow people to bring in their own items to be monogrammed. They also do all logo digitization in house, which helps with the speed of how fast they can complete orders. Embroidery has always been the main business but now they are doing laser etching.

Stop by Farragut’s newest shopping experience for all your monogrammed and specialty gift needs. They have gifts for everyone in your family, including yourself. Visit Embroidery Boutique to receive the highest quality monogramming & laser etching and embroidery needs. They look forward to welcoming you into this one-of-a-kind experience where you will receive the highest quality products with familyfriendly staffing that will have you returning time and time again.

There are many interesting items from cutting boards to cheese boards, glassware, pen, knives, clocks, personalized signs, and recently they launched laser etching on Yetis, Orcas & any stainless steel cups on the market. You can bring in your own stainless steel cup or purchase a Corkcicle which is a new line Embroidery Boutique is now carrying Cockcicle products,

In a world where people seem to be more connected and less personal, let embroidery Boutique help bridge the gap that will always be the “Place for Everything Personal”

alloween is upon us and that means it’s time for Freaky Friday Fright Nite. It’s the annual celebration of Halloween in Mayor Bob Leonard Park, where local business bring goodies to hand out and all you have to do is bring your child all dressed up and ready for a scary good time. It is completely free, extremely safe, and super fun. Freaky Friday Fright Nite is for children under twelve and there will be games, goodies, and cookie decorating for them to enjoy. Just come to Mayor Bob Leonard Park and walk around to all the tables and get candy with your little ones. Freaky Friday Fright Nite is October 28th so it won’t interfere with your Halloween plans, and goes from 5pm to 7pm so you can still get them in bed before they turn into a little monster. This event is about more than just Halloween fun it also helps the community. The trick-or-treaters are asked to bring gift cards to grocery and hardware stores, stamps, paper products, cleaning products and other household products. This event gives all donations to the Ronald McDonald House, an organization that helps families that have a sick child, and giving families a place to stay or helping with the financial toll that intense sickness can take on a family. It’s been a tradition in Knoxville and never disappoints so we look forward to seeing you and your princess, racer, witch, little angel, or whatever they want to be there!

Halloween Fun At The Knoxville Zoo

ions and tigers and bears, oh my! Now this phrase may bring back memories of Dorothy, the Tin Man and maybe even the Wicked Witch of the West, but it probably doesn’t make you think of Halloween. However, when the Knoxville Zoo teams up with Halloween it makes that classic phrase take on a whole new meaning! Boo at the Zoo is a fun and interactive way to celebrate Halloween with the little ones. It takes the already exciting zoo and puts a not so scary twist on the holiday. The zoo becomes a Halloween wonderland for preschool to elementary aged kids. Complete with a monster mash tent, music, dancing, and all kinds of furry creatures real or costumed. It also includes a “haunted” merry-go-round. Admission is only $8, Knoxville Zoo and U.S Cellar Members get $2 off the admission price. It will be opened October 6th-9th, the 13th-16th, and the 20th-23rd from 5:30-8:3pm. For more information visit their website at www.zooknoxville.org

ork hard and rock even harder is a good way to describe the local band Sparkle Motion. They are changing the Knoxville music scene one riff at a time. This quirky Knoxville centered band started with just four members: Roland Dixon, Austin Robinson, Noah Boiling, and Justin Costanzo. Roland was vocals, Austin played the keyboard, Noah rocked the bass, and Justin was lead guitar, soon after the start of the band Noah put down the bass and moved to drums and Justin was switched out with Jacob Covell, who became the new lead guitarist. This band had more than just raw talent going for them, they also had Roger Allen Wade in their rock and roll arsenal. Roger Allen Wade is an “Outlaw Country

and Western” artist who has multiple successful albums and is signed to Johnny Knoxville Records. In 2013 they were invited to Riverbend, a Chattanooga music festival, with the established artist and the night they played they made waves. They ended up getting the highest rating of any other show that night, despite the fact that they were competing with Cee Lo Green, a music artist that has been Grammy nominated sixteen times and has won five of those sixteen nominations. That’s a big deal for four small town boys. Ever since then they’ve been working on original pieces and their EPs, a musical recording that is too short to be considered

an album, or LP, an album too long to be considered a single. They have also played many local gigs at places such as: Jet’s Pizza, El Mezcal, the Bowery, World’s Fair Park, the Lawn Chair Concert series and many more. They played at Riverbend this summer once again, which was from June 8th -18th. Sparkle Motion played on the 17th on the TVFCU stage, with Roger Allen Wade & the last Band. These unique, quirky young musicians have truly set the bar for all other local musicians. They had a dream and went out to chase it. They started as a small town garage band and they are growing everyday. Check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ SparkleMotionOffical for their next gig, or just to check out their music.

Movement Equals Improvement: Local Invention Offers Hope Across the Nation What Is the Quadriciser?

QTS Wheelchair

QTS Adult

N

“ ecessity is the mother of invention.” This old proverb has persisted for centuries because it is, quite simply, true. No one knows this more than Larry Bohanan, the inventor of a robotic motorized therapy system called the Quadriciser. For 28 years, Larry worked for LockheedMartin as a designer, assisting scientists with inventions and patents. But when his father was threatened with the loss of a leg due to diabetic neuropathy, Larry created the machine to help mobilize his father’s limbs and increase the circulation in the hope they could prevent amputating.

38

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

QTS Child

The first Quadriciser was a huge success – it managed to stave off an otherwise imminent amputation for six whole months. Although Larry had a successful career and a steady job, at the age of 52, he left all of this behind to found Quadriciser Corp. and focus his time and energy on development and production of his Quadriciser Therapy System. This was a huge leap of faith, but one that has proven to be a truly inspired decision. The Quadriciser has earned high praise from doctors, therapists, nurses, and caregivers, aiding those with a variety of ailments and disabilities worldwide.

On paper, the Quadriciser is a motorized robotic therapy system designed to increase circulation to someone’s upper and lower limbs without any assistance from the individual or they can assist for active workout. In application, it’s so much more. This machine can significantly impact health by increasing circulation, heart rate, strength, muscle, and range of motion, balance, and bowel and bladder function. For many suffering from debilitating diseases, it has allowed them to take steps forward -- baby steps, perhaps, but to many, even a tiny bit of movement is equivalent to a giant leap. Any progress is good progress, or as they say at Quadriciser, “Movement Equals Improvement.”

Larry amd Patsy Bohanan, married 53 years!

The Man Behind the Machine A Knoxville native, Larry grew up in the Lonsdale community and attended Rule High School, where he met his wife, Patsy. They’ve been married an amazing 53 years and have two children, Jeff and Jennifer, and nine grandchildren. He said, there would not be a Quadriciser Corp. had it not been for the sacrifice and hard work of his wife Patsy. In school she was the smartest and most Godly person I knew. I am blessed. Larry has always been very active in a church since he was 12 years old and has a multitude of ministries – from chalk art, sculpture, and puppets and is also a Christian magician. Larry loves the Gideon prison ministry and Focus prison

ministry which is now called Focus Ministries because they are now working with inmates and their families on the outside of prison walls to get their lives back together. In the past 12 months Larry has led more than 46 inmates to Christ in his prison ministry services. He has always relied upon and trusted in his faith in God. Larry uses the Quadriciser 30 minutes each morning. Then he goes to his prayer garden on the hill for his quiet time with God and back in the house for devotions with his wife Patsy. Not your average senior citizen, he is also a trick water skier at age 74 and has built zip lines, swings, waterfalls and tree houses at his home for his grandchildren and friends. A desire to help others led Larry to dedicating his time to the Quadriciser and listening to doctors, therapists and caregivers as to what they would like to see in a machine. By using their knowledge he gained many innovative ideas and improvements to his machine in order to help other people get moving again. His dedication to others, to the people who benefit from his machine and to all those who benefit from his ministries, is truly exemplary.

Quadriciser Around the World A sign of Larry’s success is that his Quadriciser machine has been used worldwide – with great success. Larry ministered to 94-year-old Swami Bapa in his Temple in India in October and November. Swami Bapa turned 95 in December and had 250,000 followers at his birthday celebration. His followers flew Larry to India for two weeks to minister to their spiritual leader using the Quadriciser® Therapy System. The day Larry left, Swami Bapa showed renewed strength and threw 12 balls in front of 2,000 of his followers and then they honored Larry with gifts. Watch this amazing video of Swami Bapa and his Temple.

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

F

all has always been my favorite season. This is the time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. When fall arrives, it’s the time for bountiful harvests of the foods that have grown through summer. Grocery stores and farmers’ markets are full of apples, figs, pears, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and winter squash. The fall salmon run is the time when salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. Salmon spend their early life in rivers, and then swim out to sea where they live their adult lives and gain most of their body mass. When they have matured, they return to the rivers to spawn. Fishing the fall salmon run is an amazing experience and the harvest is some of the best salmon all year. To celebrate the fall salmon run, we are featuring a special dish for you to try at home and at Seasons Innovative Bar & Grille:

Wild Salmon with a Brandy Morel Mushroom Sauce Ingredients:

7 oz wild salmon (cleaned and pin bone out) 2 oz extra virgin olive oil 1 tbs fine diced shallot 2 ea sliced morel mushrooms 1 oz brandy 1/2 cup demi gloss 1/4 cup heavy cream salt & pepper

Preparation: In a heavy sauté pan over medium heat, add 1 oz of the olive oil, allow to get hot. Season the salmon lightly with salt and pepper. Place the salmon in the hot olive oil for 3 minutes, allow to sear. Turn salmon over and place in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 8 minutes. This should give you a nice medium salmon. In a separate sauté pan, while the salmon is cooking in the oven, we will make the sauce. Over medium heat add 1 oz of olive oil, add the shallots and allow to sweat until they are translucent, add the morel mushrooms and continue to sauté for 1 minute, deglaze with the brandy, add the demi gloss and the heavy cream, stir continually and allow to reduce to a good sauce consistency. Take the sauce off the heat and adjust the flavor with salt & pepper. Place the salmon on either rice, orzo or risotto and pour the sauce over the salmon. Enjoy!

“It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a harvest in the Autumn.” - B. C. Forbes

I

n 2009, eight people gathered around a table to discuss the human trafficking epidemic plaguing East Tennessee. There was no anti-trafficking movement occurring in East Tennessee at the time, and the eight agreed that something needed to be done to address this crime. “Human trafficking is a multibillion-dollar industry plaguing all parts of the world, including East Tennessee,” shares Jonathan Scoonover, CCAHT Co-Founder and Board President. “This challenge exists here, in our own community, in our own neighborhoods.” The group worked tirelessly, coordinating an in-depth research study engaging Knoxville and surrounding counties to determine precisely what was needed in the East Tennessee area regarding the response to human trafficking. The goal was to unite and equip the community to end modern-day slavery, but without duplicating services that were already being provided in the region. It was out of this research and these efforts that the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking was born.

54

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

During its first four years, the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CCAHT) was run by volunteers who balanced day jobs and families with this shared passion for taking action against human trafficking in the East Tennessee region. In 2014, CCAHT secured a significant grant to cover operating costs, enabling the organization to hire its first official Executive Director, Kate Trudell. “Looking back over the past two years, it’s amazing to think about how much one person can accomplish with a dedicated focus on the issue,” remarks Trudell. “It makes me so hopeful about what we can continue to accomplish now as we are expanding our team and our organization is growing.” Now, two years later, CCAHT has two fulltime employees, three part-time interns, and a robust group of volunteers, and the organization is expanding its capacity not only to unite and equip the upper East Tennessee community against modernday slavery, but also to serve survivors of human trafficking in the East Tennessee

area. In a time when many social services organizations are closing their doors or reducing their capacity to serve, CCAHT is breathing new life into the social services industry, providing newfound hope for the women that they serve. “Our goal is to have the freedom to create individualized plans for every client, respecting that every woman we serve will be different and every woman’s needs will be different,” Trudell says. This is the cornerstone to CCAHT’s innovative approach: understanding that services must be client-central and client-focused, prioritizing each survivor and each survivor’s unique restorative path above all else. Trudell says this means reaching beyond only those services that insurance or federal grants will fund and finding new, out-of-the-box ways to serve and walk with these women on their journeys to restoration. Through its Allies for Change program, CCAHT seeks to do just that. The Allies program provides a way for our dedicated volunteers to come alongside human

trafficking survivors in companionship, trust, and support. Trudell emphasizes that it is not a mentorship program, but a program in which volunteers and survivors are allies – friends – equal and united. Groups of allies walk alongside each survivor, providing relational and emotional support throughout and beyond the recovery process. “We’re not heroes. We’re not rescuers,” Trudell says. “We are helpers. We are no better or more valuable than the women that we serve. We are just in the right place to come alongside them and walk with them.” Over the past almost seven years, the demand for CCAHT’s work has grown such that they are now in a space where they are opening a residential facility. The organization received a total of 23 human trafficking referrals in 2015, and Trudell says they have received more than 30 referrals already this year – quite the increase in numbers. CCAHT plans to open its residential facility for adult women in late 2017 and will provide shortand long-term housing, counseling and mental healthcare, job skills and life skills, and holistic case management to survivors of human trafficking. “Victims of human trafficking need a wide array of aftercare services,” stated FBI Special Agent Cynthia Deitle at a recent public training in Knoxville. “Law enforcement agencies are well aware that our chances of a successful investigation and prosecution of the traffickers is critically dependent upon the victim obtaining the services they need and to which they are legally entitled. Currently survivors in East Tennessee do not have access to long-term housing in this region, which is unfortunate. They would be well served by an organization that could fill this void in our region.” By opening a residential facility and initiating in-house survivor care programs,

CCAHT intends to fill that void. “Through our upcoming capital campaign, we intend to raise two million dollars over the course of the next two years in order to fund this initiative,” Trudell explains. The official kickoff for the campaign will be CCAHT’s Ignite A Force benefit dinner on October 27, 2016 at Hunter Valley Farm in Knoxville. Although the event is free to attend, Trudell says that the fall benefit dinner is CCAHT’s largest fundraising event of the year.

Dr. Gayle Roulier

A Truly Extraordinary Woman Written By Phil Roulier

T

here are certain people in this world whom you admire, not because of any particular unearthly talent, but simply because of their selfless dedication to others. These people do not derive their happiness from any amount of recognition or compensation, but simply by living in the manner that suits them. For Dr. Gayle Roulier, that manner most accurately translates to a tireless dedication to her family, a natural sense of witty charisma, and a thriving career fighting one of the most deadly diseases in the world. Gayle Roulier first knew what she wanted in a career while attending high school in Dearborn, Michigan. “I always loved math and science classes, and I always knew I would find a career that encompassed the two”. Though her baffling love affair with mathematics and science served as her guide in a general sense, Dr. Roulier never seriously considered the medical field until a summer job, where she worked at the medical office of Dr. Pedro Caing, a doctor of internal medicine. After her experience at the office, she decided that medical school was her calling. “Honestly, getting into medical school was the most difficult part” recalled Dr. Roulier “After that

60

FARRAGUT LIFE FALL 2016

things just sort of fell into place”. Dr. Roulier received the honor of Magna Cum Laude at Albion College, and as such was swiftly accepted to Wayne State University Medical School in the heart of downtown Detroit. In 1991, she graduated from Wayne State and began a residency in Radiology at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan. After her Residency ended, Dr. Roulier decided to follow her career path south to Pittsburg, where she was granted a Fellowship in Woman’s Imaging. This is where she began her focus on Radiology, a calling that would last her the rest of her life and guide her future career. Two years later, she found a wonderful

opportunity in Knoxville TN at Vista Radiology (which was then known as Fort Sanders Radiology). There, she thrived as a young radiologist, and soon was granted a partnership, which she accepted in 1998. Little did she know, Knoxville would be the place where she would most call home, and a place where she would see her career thrive in a way she never imagined. Dr. Roulier went on to specialize in the detection of breast cancer, and has become one of Knoxville’s leading authorities in this field. She currently works at the Thomson Breast Care Center in downtown Knoxville, helping women diagnose and treat breast cancer on a daily basis. When asked about her career choice to go into radiology, and more specifically breast cancer, Dr. Roulier smiled. “My career has been extremely rewarding… its very satisfying to know

Above Left is Dr. Roulier and her five sons. At right is Dr. Roulier and her husband, David. Dr. Roulier loves horses and often takes her family out riding.

that you’ve played a major role in saving another person’s life. My job is constantly giving back to me.” Though Dr. Roulier’s passion for medicine had directed her to apply to medical school, some of her family were not as excited about her career aspirations. Having come from a very traditional Italian family (which to this day still boasts the most delicious pasta sauce recipe on planet earth), Dr. Roulier’s grandparents were unnerved at the thought of their granddaughter becoming a doctor. “They were just worried that I wouldn’t have time to settle down and have a family with all the work from medical school” Dr. Roulier laughed. Oh how wrong they were…. Dr. Roulier has not only had a very busy and successful professional career, she has, by all accounts, exceeded in her personal life too. After marrying her husband David in 1991, Dr. Roulier had her first son, a striping young lad

named Philip. Two years later, her second son Joseph was born. Two years later, her third. This process repeated itself a few more times, and today Dr. Roulier boasts 5 boys ages ranging from 14 to 24. Even though she finds herself brutally outnumbered by the males in the house, she is extremely proud and happy with the family she has raised. Today, only two of those boys are still at home, but as any mother will know two boys is plenty to keep one busy. Despite all the hustle and bustle of raising a family, Gayle has always presented an air of selflessness, putting the needs of her family before herself. This selflessness transcends her personal life. Professionally, in a continuation of her spirit of giving, Dr. Roulier conceived and started a weekly multi-disciplinary Breast Clinic at the Thomson Cancer Center, a place where newly diagnosed patients can receive timely, coordinated, and specialized cancer care. This clinic is unique in Knoxville, and has been running since 2001.

All in all Dr. Roulier has had a busy yet gratifying life, a life in which there is hardly a dull moment. Whenever she does find a moment (somewhere in between going over treatment options for a woman with breast cancer and the unforgiving load of laundry her boys manage to accumulate) she finds solitude in long distance running or immersing herself in a new book. Though she is unaware of what life holds in store for her in the future, Dr. Roulier knows it is the subtle beauty of life that makes it truly worth living, and that has always been enough to fuel her truly courageous and kind spirit. To the untrained eye, Gayle Roulier might seem like an ordinary citizen of the Knoxville; but to her countless patients and loving family she is more than that, and all that have truly known her will find that she is a woman worthy of praise. You will find, however, that to Dr. Gayle Roulier any praise from those around her is quite unnecessary. They have already given her everything that she needs.

Rebuilding A Life

The Inspiring Story of

Natalie Bogusky Written By Amaris Seepe

F

ew women can claim they’ve been on the cover of a magazine, and fewer still after passing their 40’s and having children. At the time of the magazine’s release, however, its star found herself in a hospital bed. It was June 24th, 2009, and Natalie Bugosky had just undergone a bilateral mastectomy. This would have knocked most women back. It seems immensely difficult to look at a picture taken just a few months prior and see the epitome of the desirable woman, then to look in a mirror and see a tired, cancer-ridden casualty. Natalie refused to succumb to this image. She refused to let cancer take her womanhood away. She wouldn’t let herself be seen as the women with breast cancer. Instead, she would be seen as a survivor. Mother’s Day weekend, 2009. This was the weekend that Natalie Bogusky received news of her mother’s Alzheimer’s, and her own diagnosis: stage two Breast Cancer. The dangerous illness seemed to come out of nowhere, and coupled with her mother’s debilitating disease, her circumstances overwhelmed her. Her family and friends would not let her go through the fire alone, however. Her children and fiance promised to stand by her side through every treatment and in return she promised to

Pictured above is Natalie with her son Brennan, daughter Brady, and her father Ronald. Natalie never let her cancer stop her from spending time with her family or doing what she loved. Pictured below is Natalie with other race attendees and below that is Natalie with her mother.

fight. She wouldn’t miss a soccer game, dance recital, or date night. She began chemotherapy in August 2009, after her breast removal, and wouldn’t finish until December. She found her hope in the company that surrounded her. “It wasn’t the people that you’d think that support you. It’s the stranger,” She said. She loved to tell stories of past people who provided her hope when things felt most grim. She met a young woman who helped Natalie walk her first “Race for the Cure”, while Natalie helped her walk her last. While getting treatment, she met an old woman who was so consumed with a scratch on her husband’s hand that she almost forgot she was there to receive chemotherapy. When she couldn’t take care of herself or walk on her own, these stories gave Natalie the strength to go on. Natalie refused to let cancer take her sense of style. She had

wigs in every color, style, and cut. Not only that, but she collected a rainbow of scarves and never left the house without makeup. She made cancer look good. When she completed chemotherapy in December, she was finally able to marry her long-time fiance in June 2010. That same summer, she also finished reconstruction. She confessed that this was the hardest part, “picking up the pieces of cancer is the hardest, because you’re done and everyone goes home. You’re left wondering where does that leave me?”. “Cancer attacks every part of your womanhood” she continues “everything that makes you a women physically and emotionally it tears down”. So although she was done with what most consider the hard part, she was far from being finished with her struggles. Her marriage began to Fall apart in 2011 due to infidelity and this took another hard crack at her womanhood. “Cancer

never brought me to my knees, only the slew of raw emotion brought up from my divorce did that.” She was also forced to put her mom in an assisted living facility due to her rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s. Natalie was truly at the lowest, but like J.K Rowling said, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life” So Natalie picked up her pieces one at a time and once more refused to give in. She just completed her eighth and final surgery in October and has had no signs of a relapse. “Cancer made me realize that I was so much stronger than I thought I was” she says,” It opened my eyes to how beautiful life is and how wonderful my life really is”. She also discovered that she doesn’t need a man in her life to complete her, two kids and five animals do that. She got her reality license and worked her way up at Keller Williams to where she is now and her business is flourishing at a record pace. She is also: the leader of her Bold group, on the associate leadership council, a multi million dollar producer, on both the culture and social committee, and trains new agents. She is putting her two amazing children through college and is continuing to be the strong amazing women she always has been.
