Little Alyssa Faith and the twins, Kathryn and Kelsey, at Easter 2011.

Letter from the Publisher Winter this year has felt oftentimes tumultuous—from biting cold to playground weather back-to-back some weeks. A dear friend and neighbor of mine, Joseph Falsetti, passed away this winter. He was my professor at UT and a brilliant and renowned artist. This issue will give you a little insight into what inspired his sculptures. He was a great artist and friend. Though winter brought sad tidings and erratic weather, very soon, rain showers and warmer days will usher the steady beauty of spring back to East Tennessee. Spring is a time of rebirth, a fresh beginning, where what was once dull and brown becomes colorful and new again. We truly do look forward to spring in our region! One of our favorite springtime activities is the Dogwood Arts Festival, featuring dogwood trails, live entertainment, crafters and artisans from all over. In this issue, discover the myriad of events you can enjoy as part of this festival. You can also journey through magical wedding venues presented by local photographers, JoPhoto, and get inspired for your own special day. Recently I was asked to be on the board of the The East Tennessee Foundation. It is truly an honor, and I look forward to sharing how this wonderful organization is giving so much to our communities. This issue, we highlight the wildfire relief efforts. I look forward to learning more about this organization and how they help to better lives in our area. The glorious season of spring also blesses us with Easter. Our lives are often filled with problems, pain and regrets, but Easter brings us the hope of new life. Easter reminds us that we are hopeless on our own, but the God of all creation sent His Son to die for us. The great news is, it doesn’t end there. Three days later, He had conquered sin and death and rose from the dead! What a glorious truth we can know — no matter how deep our sorrow and sin, we can have new life in the One who had conquered it all! As always, you will find many community happenings and local people and businesses featured within these pages. And thank you, as always, to our sponsors—without you, this publication would not be possible! I hope you all have a Spring blessed with beauty and joy!

Creative Cobble: Chalk Artist

T

here are three universal truths at Aubrey’s: the potato soup is amazing, it will be worth the expense and wherever you go, there will be fantastic chalk art hanging on the wall announcing specials, wines and freshly caught fish. But never once, as I’ve consumed the ambrosia that is potato soup, have I ever witnessed the artist at work. Christine Cobble has always had a knack for artistic endeavors. While in school, she never stopped drawing, even when taking notes. She recalls, “My teachers always called home and said, ‘Your daughter is doing a great job, but she needs to stop drawing in the margins’.” Though she wanted to go into a career where she could draw all the time, it certainly wasn’t a linear path. The experiences she had, however, helped further her career. Freelance work helped her build customer relations and perfect her craft. Bartending helped her a lot with interacting with people, which later helped her in her customer service work at the Veterinary Clinic. Though working with people was rewarding, however, it still wasn’t what she’d trained to do. In the year 2011, Aubrey’s previous chalk artist left. Christine noticed a chance, and she took it. She started out with small pieces to get the hang of chalk. “It’s so

12

FARRAGUT LIFE SPRING 2017

forgiving,” she said in regards to the medium. She was a fast learner and quickly picked up the medium skills necessary to make the boards truly spectacular. Cedar Bluff Aubrey’s was only the beginning for Christine. The freelance work started to pick up, and soon the Aubrey’s locations in Oak Ridge, Maryville, Papermill and Strawberry Plains were under her jurisdiction, calling her and other artists to create new artwork as needed. They show up once a month to touch up the boards and change them entirely every three months to keep up with the current trends, such as football season or recent movies. Though she was doing professional, quality work for Aubrey’s, Christine still wasn’t very confident in her own artistic abilities. What she didn’t know was she was about to receive a challenge that would change her view on both her craft and herself. The Chalk Walk is an annual festival that attracts thousands of people each year.

Within its competition, artists from across the nation pick a square and compete for various honors. “It was freezing,” Christine recalled about that spring morning of the 2016 Chalk Walk. It was freezing, and she was nervous. The competition took place on Market Square, where there was plenty of space for the chalk art. Even still, she had difficulty finding a spot that wasn’t already taken. The only square she could find had a large crack straight through the middle of it that would not be ignored. The crack forced her to throw out her previous plans for the square, and she had to think of a new idea on the fly. So what did she do? Fish. Using goldfish and their continual flow, she worked around the crack using freeform.

She drew and detailed and colored those goldfish for eight straight hours of continuous work, and her hard work was not in vain. Christine won both the T-shirt contest and the Adult Single contest! She is looking forward to participating in this year’s contest. Another endeavor Christine is pursuing: nonprofit work. She started out by doing custom signs for the kids at Children’s Hospital. Placed on each one were custom characters and names for each child. Then, when her niece was diagnosed with cancer, she felt compelled to do more, so she started working with the Dragonfly Foundation.

Saturday, April 1 Krutch Park and Market Square. Artists begin working at 8:30 am and conclude by 4:30 pm.

The journey of the arts is not a linear walk. Work here, work there, suddenly work everywhere. But no matter how much work Christine Cobble does, she’ll always be remembered by those lovely chalkboard drawings that adorn the walls of every Aubrey’s restaurant, inviting you inside for some of that delicious potato soup.

WEDDING VENUES

Barn at Chestnut Springs This Barn at Chestnut Springs wedding is full of earthy mountain details and one of the sweetest couples! Kara and Perry’s wedding was on May 19, at one of the most gorgeous Smoky Mountain wedding venues in Sevierville, Tennessee.

Kara and Perry are huge Disney fans, so the theme for the day was “The Best Day Ever.” They incorporated Disney details throughout the day, and they also had the cutest Coca-Cola bottles that said “The Bride” and “The Groom,” as well as bottles for their wedding party!

On her wedding day, Kara had a beautiful floral crown that she wore with her veil, and flowers were by Lisa Foster Floral Design. The Lisa Foster crew created one of the most beautiful ceremony arbors we have seen! The blue flowers were a striking contrast against the green mountains. Kara’s wedding gown was from Wedding Wonderland by designer Lea-Ann Belter Bridal, and their wedding cakes were by Faith Baked Cakes.

The Barn at Chestnut Springs is a barn wedding venue in Sevierville, Tennessee. Hidden in a cove in the hills of the Smoky Mountains, it was built in 1954 to store tobacco. At one time, Dolly Parton’s parents owned the barn! It has been restored and now serves as a Sevierville wedding venue. It includes both indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception spaces, an outdoor fireplace and beautiful cafe lights that twinkle after sunset.

Wearing white bridal cowgirl boots and her mother’s fur wrap, Catherine met Britton for their first look at what Dara’s Garden lovingly refers to as “the quarry.” Within minutes, Britton was wrapping his arms tightly around his bride to keep her warm. The flowers were arranged by Melissa Timm Designs and the wedding was coordinated by Heels & Veils. Between Catherine’s lace sleeves, the bridesmaids shawls and the greenery and floral with twinkling candles, this Knoxville wedding had us beyond ready for the cozy days of winter!

Disaster, Response and Recovery In East Tennessee

During mid-November 2016, the East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) was moved to support the many fire and rescue teams, mostly volunteers, who had been battling wildfires across East Tennessee since spring 2016. By this time, over 800 wildfires had burned across the state and were causing “code red air-quality conditions daily. Trudy Hughes, ETF Director of Regional Development, had already begun the investigative work to determine how to best allocate the funds from the Neighbor to Neighbor Disaster Relief Fund. The Neighbor to Neighbor Disaster Relief Fund provides grants to local organizations that are working closely with communities in our 25-county service area providing disaster-related services. On November 28, 2016, the unimaginable occurred. Wildfire and wind combined to scorch hundreds of acres, drive thousands from their homes, businesses and vacation rentals, and cut short the lives of 14 people. ETF knew they would need to provide even more help to fire and rescue teams, plus others. They launched the campaign to raise additional funds for the Neighbor to Neighbor Disaster Relief Fund. Additionally, Joe Baker, Ole Smoky Moonshine co-founder, knew the recovery would be long and arduous in Sevier County and took action. He contacted former Tennessee State Supreme Court Chief Justice Gary Wade, a member of the ETF Board of Directors, to learn how best to help his community and people. 38

Funds will be used to replace equipment lost during the wildfires by fire departments, assist in the rebuilding of housing and businesses that were affected and help those most in need during the transition. 2017 ETF Chairman of the Board, Paul Willson (left page middle), speaks with Fire Inspector Mike Oakley of the Gatlinburg Fire Department.

“Ole Smoky Distillery was fortunate to encounter no damage from the fire; we want to help restore our community to welcome neighbors and tourists back,” Baker told him. Chief Justice Wade encouraged Baker to work with ETF to establish an endowed fund that will help not only now but in perpetuity, addressing restoration and relief needs as well as community needs. “It is an ongoing privilege and honor to work with everyone from Sevier County to support the fire disaster recovery and rebuild efforts,” said Mike McClamroch, ETF CEO & President. “Contributors have been and continue to be so generous with their gifts. These donations are supporting critical and current needs while also developing a foundation for addressing future community opportunities.”

About East Tennessee Foundation: East Tennessee Foundation (ETF) is a nonprofit organization created by and for the people of East Tennessee. Serving more than 25 counties within East Tennessee, ETF consists of many donors joined together to make the region they love a better place. ETF wants to build endowment, thus creating a permanent source of philanthropic funding for the East Tennessee region.

Spring ALLERGIES

Written By Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center

S

pringtime brings warm weather, blooming trees – and allergies. In fact, spring can be one of the worst seasons for allergy sufferers. Pollen appears in the air; the house seems to contain more dust than ever; and every rain puts a barrage of mold in the air! Normally the immune system protects our bodies from invading organisms like bacteria and viruses. In people with allergies, the immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance (like pollen) as an invader. This leads to production of antibodies that signal certain cells in the body to release histamine and other chemicals, leading to an allergic reaction. Allergens such as pollen from trees and grasses, dust mite particles, pet dander and mold spores often enter our bodies by inhalation. If you have allergies to any of

these particles, your immune system reacts with symptoms of coughing, runny nose, congestion and sneezing. You may also experience severe fatigue, sinus headaches and difficulty sleeping. Avoidance of allergens would be wonderful, but it’s not possible. Several medications are available to treat allergic symptoms, but it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. Some anti-histamines can cause drowsiness and an increase in your blood pressure, not to mention that many people who rely on them find that they stop working after long-term use. If you’re tired of simply covering up the symptoms of your allergies, it may be time to try immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is a natural way to treat allergies. It begins with a build-up phase where you receive increasing doses of allergen over time, leading to the maintenance or “goal” dose. It allows your body to build resistance to the specific allergens that are triggering

your reactions, and the sooner you start immunotherapy, the sooner you will experience relief. Before beginning any treatment plan, it’s important to be seen by a board certified allergist. Allergists have years of advanced training and experience to properly diagnose your specific allergens and recommend a custom path to relief. To find your way to allergic relief, schedule an appointment at The Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center today!

Eight super-sized tents, 3 generators, 1 stage complete with band, 60 volunteers, over 2 dozen restaurants and 8 purveyors of adult beverages help to create one of the most exciting evenings eagerly anticipated every year. The Farragut Food and Wine Festival has proved to have a regional draw of more than 1,000 food and fun lovers.

The Farragut Food & Wine Festival, now being produced for the 8th time, is presented by TDS and hosted by the Farragut Business Alliance and Town of Farragut. “The Festival was created to draw attention to our eateries. From hometown bakeries to 4 Star experiences, it is a showcase of ‘best bite’ samples from Farragut’s area restaurants and food providers. Then patrons can pair those bites with wines, beers and ready-to-drink cocktails (ID required) from Farragut’s wine stores and their distributors,” says Stephen Krempasky, Farragut Business Alliance’s new Executive Director. “We know once attendees try these delicious samples, they will return - with friends - to visit these businesses in Farragut and enjoy more!” Check out their facebook page at www. facebook.com/FarragutFoodFest/ for more information. “Every year since we opened First Watch on October 21, 2013, we have been a part of this event, and our plan is to continue that. Not only is it a fun event for the community, it is a fun event for our team, and we believe that is a win-win partnership. Plus a lot of people don’t know about us, so it is a good way to show some of the things we offer in a fun environment.” - Nadim Jubran, First Watch.

Seasons' Culinary Inspirations Spring Weddings and Natural Food, A Winning Combination Written By Chef Deron Little | Food Photography By Ben Gibson

S

pring is, by far, one of my favorite seasons. I personally think it’s the most romantic…with trees and flowers in bloom and warm weather settling in after a cold winter. Spring holds a new promise of fresh experiences. Organic, Free Range chicken offers a healthy food source where you can taste the difference. Once you’ve tried organic, pasture-fed poultry, you will say goodbye to the mass-produced chicken. Raised in open pastures with fresh air and natural sunshine, free range chickens have the perfect growing conditions with no hormones or animal byproducts. All natural chickens are high in Omega 3s and are tender and full of flavor. At Seasons restaurant, we focus on the emotional experience that each season brings. Every plate is a symphony of flavors that work perfectly together creating a satisfying meal. Our current spring menu represents this focus. One of our featured items on our menu is our: Seared Free Range Chicken Presented with a Wild Berry Gastrique and Melted Brie Cheese.

Deglaze with red wine vinegar, add sugar and allow reducing over medium heat until syrup is made. Place the raspberries, strawberries and blueberries in a metal bowl, and pour the hot syrup over the fresh fruit, allowing them to marinate in the syrup. Serve at room temperature. ennesseans love Peyton Manning. That’s a given. But did you know that you can cuddle with and feed Peyton Manning — the turkey, not the human — in Knoxville any Saturday that you want? Rick Springfield, the rooster, lives next door to Peyton, and he also loves to snuggle with people. Peyton and Rick are just two of the fortunate residents living at the Gentle Barn Tennessee. If birds are not your petting preference, you may also like to meet Dudley the cow, who lost a foot when he was a baby and now wears a prosthetic leg. Another lovable creature living at the Gentle Barn Tennessee is Lillie the pig, who was lethargic and unable to move when

46

rescued from the back of a truck full of pigs. Perhaps you are an avid animal lover who is looking to contribute your time to a cause. If that’s the case, you may be a perfect candidate to become a Gentle Barn volunteer. In Knoxville since June 2015, the Gentle Barn Tennessee rehabilitates abused farm animals and connects their stories of healing and survival with the personal experiences of at-risk and special-needs children who have suffered physical, mental or emotional trauma. These animals have had negative experiences in life, but their willingness to trust humans again allows them to live out their lives

in the care and comfort of a loving environment. It’s precisely the animals’ willingness to trust humans again that helps children who have undergone abuse understand that healing is possible. While the current West Knoxville location is excellent, they have outgrown it. For that reason, they will soon launch a capital campaign to raise funds. “We love our current location but are eager to find our forever home to grow roots and continue the life-changing work in our community for abused animals, at-risk youth and disabled people,” said Knoxville native Becky Mink, advisory council chairperson for the Gentle Barn Tennessee.

THE FOX DEN BUGLE These days, the words Fox Den are synonymous with golf, but something many of us might not know is that the Fox Den community also published the very first newspaper in the area! The Fox Den Bugle was the official communication for the Fox Den Country Club, with its very first issue hitting the presses in May 1968. The paper chronicled the development of the country club, a dream conceived by Chester A. Massey of Knoxville. The front page of the very first Fox Den Bugle features a Welcome message from Massey himself stating the purpose of the Bugle: “The Bugle is intended to call attention to the developments, activities and progress of Fox Den Village and Country Club.” The issue also featured Willard Byrd, a notable golf course superintendent credited with clearing the land for Fox Den.

He worked on many of America’s finest golf courses and was very excited about the new Fox Den project. Per Byrd, “Fox Den is without a doubt one of the most beautiful pieces of land I’ve ever worked on.” In May 1969, the first nine holes opened. The first Clubhouse, the old Oliver Kermit Everett farmhouse, opened in March 1969, with the second (the current Fitness Center) following shortly thereafter in May 1971, and the third (the current Clubhouse) joining the ranks in 1995. Though the development is now complete and the Bugle no longer calls the monthly news of Fox Den’s construction progress, the community lives on and continues to embody the original spirit with which it was conceived—to provide world-class golf and facilities to its residents and the community. Our mission is to strengthen and support our community by promoting business growth, education and economic development. 30 YEARS LATER… It was 1987 when Fox Broadcasting made its first prime-time TV debut, Ronald Reagan was President of the United States, top films were Lethal Weapon and The Princess Bride and we lost stars like Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire. The Town of Farragut—named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, first admiral of the U.S. Navy and born in the area—had been incorporated just seven years prior and was led by Mayor Bob Leonard, first Town mayor. At his request, through the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the Farragut Chamber of Commerce was

incepted in May 1987, with a mission to “strengthen and support our community by promoting business growth, education and economic development.” The charter membership was approximately 139 members. The Chamber later amended its name to “Farragut West Knox” to be inclusive and reflective of the growing business membership. Mayor Leonard passed away on November 12, 2012 at age 87. He attended his last event as a lifetime Chamber member—a “Sneak Preview” evening reception the night before the official Grand Opening of Costco Wholesale in Farragut—on November 8, 2012. On

A NOTE ABOUT THE PRESIDENT/CEO… Upon her arrival in the Farragut West Knox area in 2001, Bettye Sisco took on leadership of a small chamber with a dwindling membership of approximately 100 businesses, debts to be rectified and no other staff to carry out its operations. The Chamber had hosted perhaps 7 networking events in the previous year. Its future was unclear at best. With her extensive background of decades in marketing and sales, an internationally traveled speaker and sales trainer, she took on the task of rebuilding the chamber member by member. Now, 16 years later, the Chamber is a highly active and successful not-for-profit organization funded by membership and events, managed by a professional staff and led by its core volunteer group of corporate and community leaders that comprises its Executive Board and Board of Directors. Bettye Sisco retired as of December 31, 2016. In January 2017, the Board appointed the current Executive Assistant, Julie Blaylock, as the Interim Director. On February 8, they elected to hire her as the new President/CEO. With 5+ years’ experience at the Chamber and a sincere passion for the organization and the businesses/ community it serves, she is honored to be entrusted with the position and excited for the Chamber’s future. Cheers to 30 more years!

November 9, at the behest of lifetime member Joan McIntee, current Mayor Ralph McGill declared a proclamation for the Chamber in celebration of its 25th anniversary and in recognition of its many contributions to the businesses and community. November 9 is “Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce Day.” The Chamber celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2017, boasting a membership of approximately 750, and currently supported by its 2 staff members, 15 board members and over 20 Ambassadors. We are incredibly proud of the growth of our Chamber and look forward to many more decades of helping our businesses thrive and succeed.

he Chamber’s largest annual event and fundraiser is its silent and live auction, which provides spectacular advertising for over 300 businesses and has grown to see an average 250 attendees each year. The auction is one of several events that supports the Chamber’s Continuing Education Scholarships, and a portion of tickets goes to an area charity. Each of the past 29 auctions have centered around a theme that inspires the event’s décor, tabletop centerpieces, item packages and more. From “Turning Dreams Into Reality” to “Puttin’ on the Ritz” to being on the “Road to Rio,” guests embrace the spirit of each theme, which makes the event even more fun. For 2017, the Chamber is “Born to be WILD!” and will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Friday, May 12, beginning at 6pm, as it reflects back on three decades of helping businesses navigate the “jungle out there” and looks forward to the adventures and excitement of whatever the next 30 years has to offer! Sponsorship of this event is a fantastic way to highlight your business. Sponsorships are available to members at Presenting, Event and Community levels. New for 2017 is the inclusion of complimentary tickets at ALL levels of sponsorship. The

Hydrangeas

B

Written by Gayle Fisher

eautiful, lush, colorful and longlasting hydrangeas have only recently become a standard landscape plant. Once considered old-fashioned, this shrub is among the many Victorian favorites that have made a comeback in the American garden. We especially love them here in East Tennessee, where they are winter hardy and nearly everybody’s grandmother had them growing somewhere in their yard. I have extensive knowledge of how hardy hydrangeas are. Twelve years ago, I asked my children to each give me a hydrangea for Mother’s Day. I had already picked out the plants, and all they had to do was cough up the money to their father. I planted the five hydrangeas close to the entrance of our farm under a dogwood. You have seen the pictures in magazines— large fluffy blooms, gorgeous color and a heavenly scent. This display was going to wow my visitors. Being a new gardener and not researching the plants enough, I found myself with constantly wilted plants, and I had no easy means of getting water to the thirsty, spindly little shrubs. I hoped that this wilting was due to the new plants not being established. The next year, I had the same disappointing performance—weeping foliage and no blooms. The third year, I dug up the plants, brought them to the house and planted them again, this time outside the garden room where water was abundant and I saw them every day. The fourth year, I had only foliage again, but not as much wilting thanks to the water. Looking after them daily became a chore when winter came since they are deciduous; I was gazing at little bare sticks. I then made a terrible mistake and pruned them back severely. This

60

FARRAGUT LIFE SPRING 2017

was a sure way not to get any blooms the next summer, since hydrangeas bloom on old wood. Fast forward ten years, lots of water and no pruning, and my hydrangeas are finally fabulous, magazinequality beauties. The color of the hydrangea is affected by the soil. If

you bought your plant or received it as a gift in full bloom and then the next year, your plant had a weaker color or faded appearance, you need to amend the soil. Flower color depends to a large extent on soil pH. Acidic soils (pH 5.0 to 5.5) yield blue to purple flowers, while more alkaline soils (pH 6.5 to 7.5) yield pink to red ones. Some cultivars are more affected by pH than others, but white flowers (my favorite) are not affected by pH at all. Lime is

used to raise the soil pH (make it less acidic), and aluminum sulfate is used to lower it (make it more acidic). Any changes you make in the soil’s pH should be done gradually over several seasons. If you have strongly acidic soil and want to grow pink hydrangeas, growing them in containers would be your best option, as they are a great container plant. Even with our increasingly warm winters, we still need to remember that they like partial shade and well-drained soil (late, hot afternoon sun really makes them droop). Make sure they are planted in an area where water is an easy commodity. Without rain, I am watering mine every other day with a soaker hose. Two native hydrangeas are Oakleaf and Annabelle. Being native to our area, they flourish with less effort than Lacecaps or Mopheads. Oakleaf blooms start out green and turn white as they mature, and they get to be as much as eighteen inches overall. Their name comes from the beautiful shape of their leaves, which look like an Oak tree leaf. Their handsome foliage turns a brilliant red and orange-brown in the Fall. Annabelle has numerous flowers and blooms that are a pure white. This native can be pruned and

returns to bloom in the same season. Neither Annabelle nor Oakleaf has their color affected by soil pH, so enjoy them in their natural shades of white. If we have a surprise frost late in the spring season, these natives will still perform, whereas you may lose all of your Mophead blooms.

ranging from white to various shades of pink and blue. I have a soaker hose running through the beds. I started with five hydrangeas fifteen years ago, and today I have over sixty.

Hydrangea blooms are easy to dry and use in your home throughout the seasons. If you like the Victorian look, just let them dry in a vase. Cut the flowers early in the day when in full bloom, and let them stand in two to three inches of water (do not replenish the water) until they are dry. This gives a fuller, more natural form. You can also hang the fresh flowers upside down in a dark, dry space, but the heads will tend to wilt or collapse. These dried flowers can be used in wreaths, dried arrangements or as holiday tree decorations. If they are allowed to dry naturally on the plant in the garden, they have a natural bronze color, and the heads will usually last until after Christmas.

ROOTING HYDRANGEAS: The technique is extremely simple. Step 1: Take eight- to twelve-inch tip cuttings in early summer and strip off the lowest pair of leaves. Step 2: Wet the cut ends and dip them in rooting powder. Step 3: Stick each cutting into a container of moist potting soil. Keep the soil moist and in the shade. The cutting should root in six to eight weeks. This is an easy way to increase your plants. Water is the key item in rooting and growing hydrangeas.

I have an obsession with hydrangeas. Currently, I have fifteen Oakleaf standing over eight feet tall, eight Lacecaps, twelve Annabelle and twenty various Mopheads, with colors I did tell you that they are easy to root.

Our community lost a talented and wonderful man last December when Joseph S. Falsetti, an emeritus professor at the University of Tennessee, passed away. Joseph was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. He was recognized both nationally and internationally for his work; below is a brief glimpse into what inspired him. “Since I grew up in Italy surrounded by large sculptures, it was natural for me to create large public sculptures. I actually enjoy the physical aspect of doing monumental art. Most of my sculpture is constructivist in nature, and I work in a variety of media. I explore the possibilities of transformable or manipulative environmental elements. My work is often dictated by an actual given space since most of my work is done by competitive commissions. Often there is an iconographic implication or conceptual purpose embodied in my work. I also believe that an artist must demonstrate a certain degree of technical control over materials and that the exquisite craft with which the works are done is in itself a source of visual satisfaction. - Joseph Falsetti.

FARRAGUT LIFE SPRING 2017

“During the period of my sculptural career, my work has evolved through three different styles. They are figurative, architectural and nostalgic. My philosophy has always been that the arts reflect the culture of the age, and the artist is responsible for integrating art with community life. Sculpture, in particular, should be put in touch with people, placed around them, and made a part of everyday life as it was in past centuries.
